LIVE from the LAWN By Chris Slattery
It’s a time-honored tradition that says “summer is here” to anyone who calls Montgomery County home: the sight of blankets on the grass, the smell of Ridgewells barbecue in the air, and the sounds of go-go, bluegrass, and ukulele floating from the gazebo. Live from the Lawn is the free summer concert series at Strathmore, where banjos, beach chairs, and burgers collide. Couples dance, children play, and bands from downtown and around the world perform for crowds of 1,500 or more Wednesday evenings in the summer. “It’s always exciting,” says Strathmore programming manager Phoebe Anderson-Dana, who books the talent for the series and runs each event with the help of Strathmore’s staff, trying her best to mix it up. “We always have Uke Fest; that’s the mainstay,” she said, explaining the lineup. “I like to include a local artist or two. This year we have Akua Allrich, who’s a fantastic, DC-based, jazz singer. I look for something fun, for diversity in genre. And I want to have people dancing.”
That’s what it’s all about, according to Eliot Pfanstiehl, Strathmore’s CEO. “Once upon a time, my family went to Bar Harbor, Maine, in the summer, where they have the most wonderful village green with a little gazebo—very New England-ish,” he said. “Every Wednesday night the world’s worst town band would play barely recognizable standards, but every child would get up and run in circles while the music played. And when it stopped they all sat down.” Enchanted by the music and sense of family and community those concerts inspired, Pfanstiehl came back from vacation with a mission in mind. “I proposed we build a gazebo on the lawn at Strathmore,” he recalled, “get better musicians, and perhaps children would get up and run around here.” That was 30 years ago, when a call went out for what would be the Gudelsky Gazebo. The University of Maryland School of Architecture and the Potomac Chapter of the American Institute of Architects held a juried design contest. The gazebo was dedicated in 1988, on Strathmore’s fifth anniversary. “Over the years, we’ve had an incredible variety of performers: African drummers, acrobats, music from rock to reggae, and even classical,” says Pfanstiehl. Anderson-Dana agrees that diversity is key. “Bluegrass seems to have that summer feel,” she said, “but last season Mariachi Flor de Toloache—the all-female mariachi band—was the biggest crowd we had all summer.” Every child got up to dance, just as Pfanstiehl had envisioned. And their parents danced too.

THE SIMON & GARFUNKEL STORY
A lovingly authentic tribute to folk music’s greatest duo

There are cover bands and tribute acts, and then there is The Simon & Garfunkel Story. This impeccably curated and masterfully executed production is much more than a tribute—it is a transcendent, historical journey with goosebump-inducing vocal performances. Following its successful debut in London’s West End and a sold-out tour in the United Kingdom, The Simon & Garfunkel Story is finally coming to America with a special stop at Strathmore this fall. In the UK, the production has been greeted with overwhelming critical praise and nightly standing ovations. The show has been seen by more than a quarter million people across the world and features state of the art video projection, incredible lighting, and a full live band performing iconic hits such as “Mrs. Robinson,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Homeward Bound,” “Scarborough Fair,” “The Boxer,” and “The Sound of Silence,” in addition to lesser known classics. The key to the show’s success, says creator, director, and original Paul Simon portrayer Dean Elliott, is a commitment to authenticity. “It’s an extremely authentic show performed and written with a real love and respect for the duo,” says Elliott. This is not Elliott’s first foray in capturing the look and sound of an American musical icon. Trained at the prestigious Sir Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Elliott rose to fame after taking on the lead role of Buddy Holly in the Olivier Awardnominated musical Buddy—The Buddy Holly Story. In a 2015 interview with Scotland’s Daily Record, Elliott says that in some ways Buddy inspired him to create The Simon & Garfunkel Story. “I was doing the show Buddy in London’s West End for years, and I wanted to do something that was my own but in much
the same way as Buddy. It had to be something I was passionate about that had a story, theatrical content, and West End musical values. I have all the Simon and Garfunkel albums and love all their work, so it felt like the obvious choice.” Preparing for the role of Simon proved to be an entirely different experience, however. While there is very little footage of Holly to watch for inspiration and guidance, recordings of Simon and Garfunkel are plentiful. “In some ways that makes it harder, but it was great to indulge in hours of recordings, live performances, and interview footage,” says Elliott. Although Elliott will not be reprising his role as Simon on the US leg of the tour, he says that one of the highlights of being the production’s director is “watching new people bring energy and experience to the role.” Casting for such a production is no small feat, as the nature of the show demands actors who both look and sound the part of the original musicians.

“Both [parts] are tough,” says Elliott. “Art has a very distinct voice, and Paul is an amazing guitarist.” The full cast of multitalented performers includes a live band featuring guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and percussion. Together, the group has stunned audiences with their faithful renditions of songs from one of the most beloved duos of all time. Elliott told Daily Record that he was inspired by the artists’ work ethic and dedication to their craft. “I read in a biography that Paul and Art would sit in a room and look at each other’s mouths, they’d sing every ‘t’ and ‘d’ and every sound absolutely spot-on together,” he recalled. “So we spent four months in rehearsals to ensure that the voices worked in vocal harmony.” Today, Elliott beams with pride at the show’s continued success even as cast members rotate. “Although difficult, it’s amazingly satisfying to get it right and hear people say, ‘Wow, I closed my eyes and it sounded like the original.’” But don’t close your eyes for too long. In addition to the gorgeous melodies and stirring vocal harmonies, there is a strong visual component to the show as well. The Simon & Garfunkel Story includes video montages and archival footage that present the duo’s music in its
original context. Simon and Garfunkel were, after all, the voices of a generation, providing the soundtrack for the counterculture through a tumultuous decade. The video clips include historical scenes from the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, Kennedy’s assassination, and the flower power scene. In between songs, the featured performers offer anecdotes and narration to guide audiences through not only the swinging ’60s but also the fascinating history of Simon and Garfunkel’s friendship, collaboration, and conflict. Taking a deep dive into the pair’s backstory, even a diehard fan like Elliott uncovered some interesting facts about his musical heroes. “I didn’t realize they were friends from elementary school and grew up a few blocks apart,” he shares. “And the fact that they were a rock ’n’ roll duo before Simon and Garfunkel surprises people too.” From Simon and Garfunkel’s formative days growing up in Queens, New York, through their landmark yet turbulent career, to their famous 1981 Central Park reunion, The Simon & Garfunkel Story is undeniably compelling. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a casual admirer, this production has something unique to offer. Of course, there are two particular audience members that Elliott would especially love to see at one of the US dates. As he said back in 2015, when the US tour was still a dream, “I really want us to tour it in America and invite Paul and Art to the show. . . that would be the ultimate.” While there’s been no confirmation that the pair have made plans to attend, Elliott says the invitation has been sent. “Fingers crossed!”
