IN THE MUSIC CENTER

IN THE MANSION

Whether you’d like to relive old memories or create brand new ones, the Music Center is the place to stuff your musical stocking. There’s an unmistakable jazzy joy to the Dave Koz and Friends Christmas Tour 2012 (Dec. 3). Traditional and uplifting, multiGrammy nominee and saxophonist Koz’s highenergy show is pure magic. If you’re looking to tweak your holiday traditions, try adding a bit of foot-stomping flair with the marvelously merry music of Juno Award-winning fiddler Natalie MacMaster (Dec. 6). Or perhaps the heart of your holidays lies in the realm of An Appalachian Christmas (Dec. 13), violinist Mark O’Connor’s spirited mix of bluegrass and tradition. You can even find a holiday spectacular when Mannheim Steamroller (Dec. 15) rolls in with special effects, Renaissance instruments and rock & roll beats, coming together to make a new and truly glorious holiday sound.

There’s no place like a stately home for the holidays! Enjoy the Mansion’s ambiance with the Charm City Klezmer Band (Dec. 12 & 20). They specialize in music for the simchah, or joyous occasion— and what’s more joyous than Hanukkah? Get your jazz on with Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra (Dec. 16), a 17-piece big band that brings together some of the area’s finest jazz musicians. Or cut to the carols, served up fresh by a 50-voice a cappella ensemble in the 18th Street Singers Christmas Concert (Dec. 19).

The Beat Beneath: Pulse Artist Jessica Beels created brand new pieces for this special exhibit. MANSION GALLERY OPENINGS Pulse: Art and Medicine FEBRUARY 16–APRIL 13

Imagine the place where art, science and the human body intersect: that’s the idea behind Pulse: Art and Medicine, the fascinating exhibit that presents a multimedia investigation of medicine as an inspiration for new artworks and art forms. Germs as art? Well, that’s part of it. According to Strathmore Fine Art curator Harriet Lesser, “From before DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man, areas of medicine have influenced aesthetic perceptions. This show, from Luke Jerram’s blown glass bacteria to Bruce Peebles’ wooden double helix installation to Satre Stuelke’s X-Ray scans of common objects, Pulse presents an ever-expanding scope of how something so essential to our daily lives can also be a source of artistic inspiration.”

“I find this work particularly compelling,” says Beels, “because I get to build pieces using two distinct materials that respond to and influence each other in the final product.”

Ask Ladysmith Black Mambazo SN: How did founder Joseph Shabalala come up with the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo? AM: Well, “Ladysmith” is our hometown: when people come together they sing this music because they miss their hometown, and we were not in Ladysmith but we wanted people to know where we were from. “Black” means the black oxen, which were so much more powerful than any other animal, and “Mambazo,” that was a chopping ax. It was a very important tool back on the farm: you had to have this tool to survive.

Albert Mazibuko, member since 1969, spoke to Strathmore News from South Africa to reminisce the some forty years since the ensemble’s formation, and the group’s amazing, joyous music.

THE BIG NIGHT Ladysmith Black Mambazo FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 8PM Tickets $25–$65 (Stars $22.50–$58.50)

From their tenor/alto/bass origins to the glorious Graceland album in 1986 to today’s Grammynominated Songs from a Zulu Farm, to experience this gifted ensemble is to listen as history floats down in harmonic perfection. Strathmore News: Congratulations on your Grammy nomination for Songs From a Zulu Farm— how many is this for you now? Albert Mazibuko: We have 16 nominations and three Grammy Awards, and it’s always exciting. When you get a Grammy nomination it’s the topof-the-tops: Amazing! SN: Can you tell us a bit about the album? AM: These are the songs that we used to sing when we were children; when we were first introduced to music, when we were little. It brings us back to when we were growing up, to how children see things. These are songs we’d sing when we’d go swimming, or hunting—playing and running in the mountains. It is very different from our previous recordings, but also so familiar.

SN: What is your proudest moment as a member of LBM? AM: Oh, I have so many…but when we accompanied Nelson Mandela and F.W. De Klerk to Norway when they accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, we had to sing with no microphone. When we finished Nelson Mandela raised his fist and said, “Black Power! Black Mambazo!” SN: Most Americans first heard LBM as part of Paul Simon’s Graceland. Is that when things started to change? AM: Oh, that changed everything. The tour started in 1987 in Rotterdam; Paul Simon said, “We’ve rehearsed enough—now sing from your hearts.” And the next day the paper said, “Ladysmith Black Mambazo stole the show!” SN: And did you see that you could help change Apartheid in South Africa? AM: The ANC (African National Congress) said, “Guys, you have to go home and join the struggle.” And we said, “This is our chance to bring the world’s attention to South Africa.” SN: And 25 years later what has changed? AM: South Africa is a different country now—it’s amazing. All those things deprived because of the color of our skin? Now everything is right there, anything is possible. It’s a free country and I can do anything.

A RT I S T S I N R E S ID E NC E 2012–2013

Ready for Their Close-Ups Strathmore has always been the place where art lives and where artists can thrive—creating, collaborating, teaching and reaching out. That’s the idea behind the Fine Art and Performing Artists in Residence program, which pairs young artists and seasoned mentors to produce amazing results.

FINE ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Adrienne N. (Ang) Gaither mixed media graphic artist

“Initially, I used colors and layers to explore the human experience,” says Ang, a Howard University graduate student. “From my experimentation with color, texture and pattern, I noticed that the textures I attempted to create were not produced with paint.” Ang began Ang Gaither, Off Duty to incorporate found objects as well as elements of graphic design into her work to examine and express “who we are as Americans, and on what we base our traditions and moral judgments.”

Drew Storm Graham mixed media “The artistic counter-cultures of tattoo and graffiti art embody bold, impetuous attitudes rooted in controversy and rebellion,” says Drew—and those bold attitudes inform his colorful, contemporary work, often in wood. “By creating a solid threedimensional reality, the art reinvents itself and is given physical permanence. Style and attitude remain unaltered, placing emphasis on artistic merit.”

Jessica Rose, Hallway Escape

Jessica Rose illustrator Illustrator Jessica Rose combines the whimsical, the nonsensical and the fantastical to create a unique genre that brings together elements of cartooning and portraiture. She’s able to sort art into “practical, professional” designs as well as deep and sometimes darkly funny pieces, and that dichotomy of tone gives her work a unique and satisfying richness.

Susan Stacks abstract artist Susan says her focus “lies in pacifying the boundary between objective physical truths and emotional perception. Frequently this means confronting or coping with illness, loss and the search for meaningful action.” Susan is acutely aware of the way her body “translates my meditations in a tactile/visual way,” and this awareness informs her emotionally detailed art. “I am intrigued,” she says, “by the space between ambition, worry and consequence.”

Wytold

FEBRUARY 13 & 27

Ready to hear the cello played in a whole new way? Wytold layers percussive bowing and melodic finger-picking, and two extra strings on his electric cello allow him to capture the depth and power of a stand-up bass, the rich tonal timbre normally associated the acoustic cello, and the bright crispness of violin solos and harmonies. Integriti Reeves

You’ll find violinist Daisy Castro at the intersection of classical and play-by-ear. Suzuki-trained from an early age and won over by Gypsy jazz during a childhood trip to France, Daisy has made this beautiful, passionate musical hybrid her own, releasing her first solo CD, Gypsy Moth, at the age of 13.

Owen Danoff singer-songwriter JUNE 5 & 19

A Washington, D.C. native and Berklee College of Music graduate, Owen’s all about developing his own unique musical trajectory.
