A NEW ERA OF INSPIRATION
In a setting where anything is possible, Strathmore’s new CEO sets out to lead with a focus on passion and purpose. By Melanie Marquez Parra
Motivated to seek new connections and inspiration, Monica Jeffries Hazangeles brings a unique depth of experience to her latest role at Strathmore. Recently appointed as president and chief executive officer (CEO), she met with Strathmore’s team and posed this question: Why do we do what we do? “That’s where we will find innovation,” she says. “When we question what we do and why we do it, that’s where the opportunities lie.”
“I was struck by the dedication of the volunteers,” she remembers. “It spoke so well of what Strathmore had already cultivated, but also what would become a foundational platform of support.” She discovered a solidity that allowed for imagination and creation. Anything was possible. And now, years since that first dose of Strathmore magic, she believes even more is possible because community involvement and support has grown exponentially.
LEADING A TRANSFORMATION Hazangeles’ journey at Strathmore has been one of transformation and advancement, parallel to the evolution of Strathmore itself. Central to Strathmore’s

Margot Schulman
Hazangeles instantly knew Strathmore was a seminal place for her when she arrived nearly 25 years ago. The enchantment and warm embrace of Strathmore enveloped her from the start. From her first role as a special events coordinator, she found herself driven to see how far Strathmore could go as a leader in arts, education, and outreach.
progress was her role in securing $110 million in public and private funding to build the world-class Music Center, home to the 1,976-seat Concert Hall. Hazangeles was named executive vice president in 2005, the same year the Music Center opened, and became president in 2011. “The opening of the Music Center was a moment of many goosebumps,” she says. “We created a new future for Strathmore, a new future for our community. She credits Strathmore Founder and CEO Emeritus Eliot Pfanstiehl and the entire team she works with for helping her learn and grow as a leader. She believes strongly in the power of interpersonal connections and interactions to propel progress.
STRATHMORENEWS | Winter 2018–2019 | www.strathmore.org
“I learn from the people I work with every day,” she says. “Our team members have expertise and vision. I trust them to challenge me and challenge my thinking.”
ON THE HORIZON Hazangeles has embarked on a process of defining priorities by listening to Strathmore’s staff and the artists that bring the Strathmore experience to life. Through collaboration, she wants to create a vivid artsinfused regional experience. “We have a strong foundation,” she says. “Now we can grow and experiment and go more broadly into the region with new partners. The elevation and development of our partner relationships will be a wonderful measure of success. How can we create greater connections between the audiences and artists we bring together?” Hazangeles’ career has also been largely defined by her efforts to ensure Strathmore finds untapped talent and inspires new generations of artists and audiences.
An accomplished musician herself, she understands the benefit of exposure and experience at an early age. Thanks to her early training and years of dedication, Hazangeles went on to earn a bachelor of music degree in flute performance from Florida State University and a master of music degree in flute performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
OPEN INVITATION Hazangeles wants to hear from everyone—longtime audience members and people who have never been on the campus. She wants to spend time with artists that grew up on Strathmore’s stage and those looking for a new place to explore their potential. She wants to hear questions about what Strathmore does and about what it might do in the future. A true believer in the power of the arts, Hazangeles sees Strathmore as a hub and a catalyst, a starting point for young artists and a pinnacle for professionals. She wants every Strathmore guest to feel the same sense of welcome that drew her in to life at Strathmore.
Arts Laureate
“From the beginning, I had a glimpse into the future of how big Strathmore was thinking,” she says. “I want to keep that going. So much of what we have created happened as a result of open hearts and open minds. We need to have a plan but always stay open to possibility. Possibility and serendipity are where we find the magic of Strathmore.”
“We won’t have a future filled with the arts if we’re not investing in arts experiences for our children today,” she says.
Jim Saah
Hazangeles welcomes the audience and congratulates students before Strathmore Children's Chorus spring concert.
Hazangeles socializes with donors and staff members at Strathmore Cabaret. Proceeds from Cabaret benefit Strathmore’s service to the local artist community.
“I remember my first time playing a piece in the band formation and how exciting it was. I see students in our programs having the same reactions. We’re creating inspirational and aspirational experiences through our education and outreach efforts.” 301.581.5100 | Winter 2018–2019 | STRATHMORENEWS

ARTS within REACH
Strathmore’s Bloom initiative envisions a vibrant arts community that welcomes everyone. by Jamie McCrary
A COMMUNITY COMMITMENT Bloom isn’t just an initiative—it’s a philosophy founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to high-quality arts experiences. Every community member should have the chance to explore and excel through the arts. Bloom was born from the East County Initiative (ECI), a community arts program launched in 2015 by Strathmore Founder and CEO Emeritus Eliot Pfanstiehl. Pfanstiehl wanted to leverage partnerships with area schools and nonprofits to create off-campus arts programs in East Montgomery County, Maryland. He realized that people within certain neighborhoods of Montgomery County lacked the abundant access to the arts that exists in others—a fact he knew Strathmore could help change.
Bloom is an umbrella for many diverse programs that engage and unite the local community around the arts, including those that were launched in East County and others that have existed for many years, such as Strathmore’s spring break camps and arts program offerings for veterans. Campbell believes that Bloom will provide additional opportunities for Strathmore to collaborate with new partners and help cultivate artistic talent throughout the community. “I want the Bloom brand to become a recognizable sign of something happening that is intriguing, relevant, and valuable. We hope, when

“Compared to the rest of the county, the east receives a small fraction of the number of arts grants given out by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County,” explains Lauren Campbell, Strathmore’s director of education. “[We] saw an opportunity for Strathmore to surmount thresholds to involvement and support the talent and creativity in the area.”
This new era of outreach programming started with Step Up East County, an after-school step and leadership training program, and quickly grew to offer programs across many performing arts disciplines. Other programs include Corridor Concerts, which pair Strathmore Artists in Residence with communitybased vocal groups; a series of upcoming arts classes at the Good Hope Community Center in Silver Spring; and a new after-school choir program called Sing Out.
The Children’s Chorus of Washington participates in a Corridor Concert, part of the Bloom initiative. Students in the Step Up East County program showcase their skills during a Step Showcase performance.

folks see the Bloom banner, they feel that what’s going on is both of outstanding artistic quality and of real interest to people living nearby,” Campbell says.
The East County Strings program is among Bloom’s most wide-reaching and extensive. Founded in 2016, East County Strings offers middle school students in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) tuitionfree instruction on violin, viola, cello, or bass. The seven-week program, presented in collaboration with MCPS, the Montgomery County Department of Recreation, Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras of Strathmore (MCYO), and the American String Teachers Association has nearly doubled in size since its beginning, reaching 138 students in 10 middle schools this past year. By bringing together students and teachers from multiple middle schools with high-quality private teachers and professional ensemble instructors as coaches, East County Strings unites its partners around a common passion, fostering what Cheryl Jukes, executive director of MCYO, calls a “collaborative spirit.” “Witnessing the students make music on their instruments is inspiring,” she says. “Their commitment and musical experiences offer an example of what is possible.” She goes on to say, “East County Strings instructors help students further develop their sense of self, sense of artistry, and their skills. The program is developing our future music-lovers and -makers.” The program culminates in a gala concert performance with all the student musicians from each participating school performing together, showcasing their talent and hard work. The annual production provides East County Strings students the opportunity to perform in a large ensemble—a new experience for many students. For Ashley Ashman, former orchestra teacher at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School in Silver Spring, the large orchestra experience is key. “To me, this program is important because it offered my students a chance to be in a larger ensemble than possible in our school. It helped them embrace the idea that they can produce high quality music and gave them a larger sense of pride.”
Andrew Propp
DEVELOPING FUTURE MUSIC LOVERS
An East County Strings student performs as part of the gala concert for the community.
Moving forward, Jukes hopes to continue the program and to develop more musicians and music lovers. She is also an advocate of the program’s community partnership model and hopes to apply it to other regions too. “East County Strings wants to advance music education and expand program offerings to as many students as possible,” she says. Which certainly coincides with Strathmore’s goals for the Bloom initiative. In 2019, Strathmore will expand into the Good Hope Community Center, which is home to several arts-friendly spaces. New Strathmore-presented offerings will include classes, public arts programs, and performances, further connecting the community through the arts. The expansion connects to Bloom’s overarching goal to make high-quality arts experiences and arts education available to all. Its philosophy of equitable access to the arts is a powerful one, fueling its programs and propelling it forward. It’s a mission at the heart of Strathmore and, in time, perhaps at the heart of Montgomery County, too. “Like Strathmore as an institution, Bloom is growing and evolving every day,” says Campbell. “We are excited to keep learning how best to serve.”
