FLO MAN Marcus Johnson talks wine, wonder and his favorite song for Valentine’s Day

Marcus Johnson most often described as a Renaissance Man—jazz musician, producer, record exec, entrepreneur—but the head of Three Keys Music and FLO Wines is a hometown boy at heart, coming of age in Silver Spring, getting his Music degree at Howard and his JD and MBA at Georgetown.

MJ: I had a crush on my first grade teacher, and at our class Valentine’s Day party I took one of the cupcakes, gave it to her, and said, ‘Will you be my Valentine?’

He’ll be at the heart of Strathmore’s Valentine’s Day celebration, performing live with his Urban Jam Band on the Music Center stage and showcasing his signature FLO (For the Love Of) wines at an elegant pre-show dinner.

MJ: Being anywhere with the one—and the ones—that you love. That’s it! People talk about dinner-at-so-and-so: nope, when you’re in love it can be anywhere and be perfect.

Strathmore News: What makes a jazz guitarist specializing in the urban jam become a wine connoisseur? Marcus Johnson: If you think about it, wine and music are the perfect pairing,” says Johnson. “I saw that a lot of people were at my jazz concerts drinking wine; I thought, ‘How do I expand my brand?’

SN: What’s your idea of the perfect Valentine’s Day?

SN: You have a Music degree, a Law degree, and an MBA. Which is the most romantic profession? MJ: It’s a combination of the three: keep the artist in the businessman and the lawyer; keep the structure of the lawyer in business and music. My goal is to be as strategic and visionary as possible, to have a nice life and enjoy the moment. SN: Who’s the love of your life?

That kind of thinking, he says, is an extension of the way his parents and step-parents taught him to look at life: with eyes wide open, ready to engage every possibility. It colors his music, too. “My transition in musical style is based on exposure,” explains the guy whose first musical memory is dreaming under the piano while his mother, a psychotherapist, played classical music to unwind. “It’s about being in the right place in the right time: in the urban jam concept there’s no structure; you could hear me three days in a row and it all sounds different.” SN: OK, spill the tea Marcus: who was your first Valentine?

MJ: My daughter, Chase. When I see her, she lights up: it’s how she plays peek-a-boo, it’s bath time, it’s everything. We’ve shared the most incredible feeling ever, that this being trusts me completely, falls asleep in my arms. I fall in love every day. SN: Any tips for a romantic Valentine’s Day? MJ: If you can’t make it to our show at Strathmore check out my Pandora, Spotify or iTunes. Tech, Yeah! Discover the Brave New World of Fine Art Technology

What’s Up: New Technologies in Art JANUARY 11–MARCH 2 Instructive, inventive, evocative and evolving: tech innovation is revolutionizing the art world, and this amazing exhibit puts some of the most provocative new media on display. Like the work of software artist Scott Draves, who founded the collaborative abstract artwork known as Electric Sheep, a project whereby video files of the animated fractal flames he invented are rendered by more than 450,000 participants and used to create screensaver-ish original artworks that “dreams” on and on for hours. “The images are extremely expensive to produce,” explains Draves. “And I could generate about one second of video a day: not enough to be interesting.” That’s the practical reason behind the crowd-sourcing; conceptually it’s an exploration of the notion of ownership and control that goes back to the 20th century and the vision of artists like Andy Warhol and Yoko Ono. A single piece, he says, can play many roles—and his work challenges the concept of authorship, of the artist as creator, “the classical ideal of the genius with his hand and his brush.” Draves sees the modern artist as someone who stands on the shoulders of giants and looks ahead to the possibilities of artificial intelligence and open sourcing. For Draves, who finds inspiration in the art of Vasily Kandinsky and Jackson Pollock, technology has changed the way art is made, but not necessarily how it is enjoyed. “I can get by with a white wall,” he says. “A computer, some projectors: it’s simpler than the average home stereo system you get at Best Buy. “My objective is to give the computer a chance to speak, to respond, to evolve. I’m looking for a meditative experience.”

Wammie-winning classical composer-pianist Jessica Krash is a D.C. native and a Harvard grad, with a Masters from Juilliard and a Doctorate from UMD. Her work has been presented in traditional and experimental settings in New York City and abroad, and she’s lectured at the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress and NIH on topics of music and the brain.

The director of Georgetown Guitar, he completed his Master’s with legendary guitarist, Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Institute. JUNE 4 & 18 D.C. native Amadou Kouyate is the 150th generation of the Kouyate lineage and a dynamic djembe and koutiro drummer who also plays the 21-string kora. Award Winner Betty Scott Expands AIR Program At the heart of it all is Education and Artist in Residence Coordinator Betty Scott, who won the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County Award for Excellence in Education in October 2013.

She was already a Grammy-winner with a profile in People magazine, but Betty Scott admits to being “surprised and delighted” to get a call from Montgomery County First Lady Catherine Leggett. “It was just such an honor to be included with outstanding people from other genres,” says Scott, a music teacher for 40 years before coming to Strathmore in 2005. “It’s a privilege to be around so many people who are like-minded about the arts, especially Ike and Catherine Leggett. I don’t know that there’s any district in the country where the arts get such strong support.”

Not content to rest on her laurels, Scott is eager to get the word out about the AIR education workshops that are free and open to the public. “We think it’s so important for the AIRs to do these workshops to explain and defend their craft,” she says. “It’s an outreach program that brings the public in for an overview of different musical genres—jazz, bluegrass, Hindustani classical violin, African percussion—and lets the AIRs interact with their audience.” And while the class of 2013–2014 will learn, as other AIRs did before them, the ins and outs of the music business from booking to billing and beyond, the workshops are an opportunity to focus on the nuances of performing—and a chance to give back to the community. “It’s a great step forward,” says Scott. “For everyone!”
