POETIC CROSSINGS A STROLL THROUGH BARRA DA TIJUCA 5ºyear / 2016 Senior Thesis Coordinators: João Masao Kamita / Raul A Smith On the last year of college we must realize a conclusive work on a topic of our choice. My first interest was to investigate possible relations between art and architecture in the city. While engulfed in a topic of many crossroads, a work of theoretical character was developed starting from a research in art history (more specifically, from sculpture, starting in the 1960s), within the context of the crisis of modernism and the limits of functionalism. The main concept that unfolds the investigation is the idea of the stroll as a movement that approximates art and architecture in the everyday life. As such, the work became a procedural essay: every 10 days I would place myself as an wanderer and register it through the media of photography, video, drawings, writings, and 3D models. The chosen segment for the study is part of Barra da Tijuca (a modernist district designed by Lúcio Costa) and is characterized by its lack of particularity; a neutral space intended to serve only its circulatory function.
Throughout the drifts, I indicate possibilities of intervention onto the space in which the crossings unfold. Crossings, that as such, reveal to us what was previously restricted. However, the work does not arrive at an answer or a conclusion, but turns into a reflection about life in the metropolis. It is an invitation not only to a physical dislocation, but also to a dislocation of the senses in re-experimenting the city. “Como a vivência da cidade participa no processo de imaginação do espaço arquitetônico?” (BUCCI,2005) The final product presented in the defense was a synthesis of the whole process: the research, the photographs, the video, the sketches, and the scale models. The presentation was the exhibition of such media, which together add up to other layers of urban interpretation.

The sequence of subjects that were brought up during the thesis board: The crisis of modernism in the 60s and the positioning of the revolutionary architects Venturi, Aldo Rossi, and Bernard Tschumi. The artists’ exit from the white cube and their entrance into the urban space. The interdisciplinarity in the idea of the expanded field by Rosalind Krauss and Anthony Vidler. The dislocation of the self-centered subject in art, from Pollock’s paintings to non-site and site-specific artists such as Robert Smithson, Richard Long, Robert Morris, and Richard Serra. The Situationist International founded by Guy Debord and its means of appropriating the city so as to surpass functional urbanism. Lúcio Costa and the pilot plan for Barra da Tijuca. Oscar Niemeyer and the plan for Athayde Ville.

It had rained in the morning and the smell of wet earth attracted him towards the small trail next to him. Meanwhile in that forest on the way to work, the city seemed distant. Hardly did he know that one day everything had been like this out there. He takes off his shoes and feels the earth. It is possible to see the sunlight. He continues walking over the demarcation and when he begins to go up, he believes that he has already passed the halfway point. He turns around when he hears a noise. Children play with a water puddle that was formed with the rain.
It was built, on an odd day, a third bridge. Without creating margins, without uniting edges, without providing accesses, Bridge 3 leans on pillars over the canal. It does not correspond to the logic of the other bridges in the area, it extends and crosses revealing another flux. Now it is no longer possible to circulate inattentively. Of metallic structure and leaked walls, the quick passage through Bridge 3 can disorientate. Covered and airy, it is a hiatus between movement and pause. There can be an informal commerce, or a space of studies. On dry land, I watch people enter the tunnel over the waters without ever exiting. Time over the bridge, time over the canal, Bridge 3 dislocates the pedestrian through ramps and overpasses. The objective passage that existed before is substituted by varied possibilities that overlap between mirror and reflex. On a sunny Saturday, the path becomes the destination and people lie around here while others jump into the water. At dusk it is a good place to see the sky change color, while the night is a space of mixtures, between promiscuity, leisure, commerce, and fear

After hours in the traffic jam, I get off of the bus and go up the overpass in direction to the shopping center. It was busier on the way there than normal, and some people run past me, in vain, as the BRT, full, did not stop. Since I have time, I do not get off on the last exit and continue to walk beyond any seemingly important point of arrival. Over the top of cars, of shopping malls, I can see the backyard of a house of a condominium. The crosswalk, distant and erased, reflects me better than a mirror. Ironic, I think, amidst so much programming, for there not to previously exist here a passageway in the most obvious use of the word: crossing the Americas in the fast and objective way. Behind all of the construction, Lagoa. Pedra da Gรกvea, now so close, is covered by the clouds. Without reason and without cause the passageway ends, in a perfect axis, my path towards the sea.

Architecture, Infrastructure and Territory Lab (LAIT) is a research project that has as a focus the reflection around the interdependence between infrastructure and urban development. The studio encourages research and project experimentation in order to develop new forms of occupation of space amidst current urban proposals in the country.
PARK-INDUSTRY DEMYSTIFYING THE PROCESS OF DESALINATION
4ºano / 2014 LAIT - Academic Research The result of the work was a research based on the problem of the drought in Ceará. The northeast of the country lives with a drought and suffers annually from the lack of water. An investigation was thus generated around federal urban measures that were adopted in the combat against the drought in the northeastern state, varying from residential wells to the transposition of rivers. The project took form in the installation of a Desalination Plant in the Industrial and Port Center of Pecém (CIPP), in Pecém. The goal was to, through architecture, establish a new industrial context amidst a demographic growth that will occur around CIPP. Contradicting the functional sectorization, the project aims to create a new academic path and a park out of the raw material and residue that are left over from the desalination. Like this, such a project of water treatment is demystified and the industry creates a new urban configuration. The desalination plant, asides from having a high power demand, has brine as a residue, a product that is extremely polluting. From this arises the second component of the work: to create from these two pillars (the demand and the product) an infrastructure of leisure, the Park.. What will be presented next are some of the diagrams and drawings necessary for the comprehension of the project.

The CIPP will soon become one of the most important ports in the country. Its location is privileged, being 6 days away form Europe and North America. Its model combines the port with the Industrial Center, which can also be found in Suape (BR), Marseille (FR), and Kashima (JP). The CIPP promises to generate new resources, jobs, and to be the main factor in the economic and social development of the region. Some industries are already in operation, such as the Premiu Refinery II, the Siderurgy Company of PecĂŠm and the MPX Thermoelectric . However, the industrial center is situated in an area of transition between dunes, mangroves, sandbanks, the Atlantic rainforest, and the Cerrado, having a biological diversity that is extremely rich and indispensible for the hydrographic balance in the region. The research theme arose from this paradox, the desalination plant was seen as the most efficient form in the combat against the drought and it contextualizes itself with the industrial transformations of the region.

The desalination plant createds a relationship with the surrounders, instead of a segregation situation. The result was a park in the form of an Academic Path, where the water treatment process is discovered by the neighbors. The park also consists of the products of the desalination process and its implementation varies as long does the water level.

RESIDENTIAL BUILDING A BUILDING FOR THE HUMAN SCALE
3th year/march 2014 Academic Project The challenge was to design another residential building in the midst of the district of Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro. The theme that I chose to explore was the building in the urban landscape. This concept expresses itself through a non-linear façade that contextualizes itself with the pedestrian’s optical experience. In opposition to the homogenous buildings, such dynamics on the façade allows for planes that decompose according to the distance and the size of those who circulate on the street. The second point was the permeability between the building and the public space. The apartments possess, therefore, a hallway-balcony, and on the ground floor, a café was designed

SCHOOL+PUBLIC SQUARE 2nd year / 2012 Academic Project The main concept of the project was to transform the areas of circulation into areas of conviviality. The two volumes that constitute the classrooms are connected through ramps of metallic structure that create a dynamic between circulation and living. The classrooms are distributed from the module of 6.00x10.0m with concrete structure. Requirements such as cross ventilation and natural illumination were taken into account in the implementation of the school. A public square is created from the localization of the sports court on the main faรงade while on the back of the plot one can notice the relation with the landscape, from the plateaus that connect the leisure area with the existent relief..
