Caanawenians thriump over Oplan E gold anew

Teachers and learners of Caanawan National High School celebrated their third championship after ranking first place anew in the recently concluded Division Search for the Best Oplan Environment Implementer.

Sir Ariel B. Santiago, Oplan E Coordinator, said that the key to the school’s backto-back-to-back win was the participation of the stakeholders not only in the indicators involving tree planting but also to factors such as the implementation of the demo farm and the school-based feeding

program.

“Since 2019, tayo na ang champion sa Oplan Environment. Actually, maconsider na tayo as Hall of Famer sa Oplan E…At ito ay dahil sa tulong ng ating mga stakeholders sa iba’t ibang categories at indicators gaya ng tree planting, un gating demo farm, at ang feeding program”, said Santiago.

Aside from the Oplan E win, the school was also awarded first place in the Division Search for the Best

“Sa pagkuha naman ng championship, hindi naman s’ya expected eh, pero sa pagtutulungan ng mga guro, stakeholders, parents, at lalo na ng mga students, syempre kung wala kayo (stakeholders), lahat ng mga ito ay hindi magkakaroon ng katuparan, especially sa strong leadership ng ating school head, talaga namang and’yan ang kanilang suporta para sa Oplan Environment,” he added.

are expected to complete the four parts of the RFS - Agriculture, Fisheries, Animal Poultry, and Food Processing.

“The purpose of the RFS is not only for the benefit of the students who are enrolled but also for the community,” Wagan said.

Also, the program expects the learners to become skilled and equipped with farming/agriculture skills in the future.

Enrollment drops more than 7%

Enrollees of Caanawan National High School dropped by more than seven percent from 1825 to 1681 for school year 2022-2023 according to data.

In an interview with the Ma’am Andrea L. Nario, LIS Coordinator, the decrease in the enrolment could be attributed to the

Among those appointed were Vindrel G. Velasco, SSG Vice President, as Little City Licensing Officer, Alyssa P. Carbonel, BKD President, as Little City Chief of Police Officer.

“Hindi ko expected na mapupunta ako sa ganoong part na mag se-serve ako as Little City Official. Sobrang saya ko kase first time ko nga ‘yon.

Tulad nga ng nakaraan, pangarap ko lang din mag serve sa public and ‘yon natupad iyon dahil sa programa na inilatag ng City Government ng San Jose”, Velasco said.

He also added that based on his experience, it was difficult for him to be part of the Licensing Office due to the workload. However, he still felt thankful that he was able to finish his tasks.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jocelyn T. Leonardo, Principal I, said that the award is not only for one’s honor but for all Caanawenians who shared their part in the Oplan E implementation.

When asked about the preparations made by the school and the TLE Teachers who are also the program’s main implementers, Ma’am Arriane Joy S. Esquivel, TLE Subject Leader, said that their first step was to craft the action plan that includes the roles of all teachers and student leaders for each indicator. The key is the distribution of tasks for all the learning areas, she added.

As for the school’s plan for Oplan E 2023, Santiago said that sustainability is their goal as a way forward with all the

part of the journalism class and that she could not describe how to feel knowing that they have additional subjects aside from their regular loads.

“Nung una po hindi ko po talaga alam mararamdaman ko, kasi wala rin po akong experience sa pagsusulat ng mahahabang mga balita, tapos ngayon po na kasama na po ako sa SPJ is marami na po kaming naisusulat so medyo nakaka surprise rin po,”

Meanwhile, Dr. Jocelyn T. Leonardo, Principal I, said that the addition of the special journalism program is an asset of the school since campus journalists of Caanawan are used to competing with other schools in journalism press conferences.

As of the moment, there are 23 learners enrolled in Grade 7-SPJ.

DepEd revises Panatang Makabayan for more solemn, ethical cause

Gear up and listen! Put your right hand up and state the patriotic vow.

“Panatang Makabayan’’ is one of the two pledges of allegiance every Juan must know. It is taught to all learners and recited during flag raising ceremonies at school along side with the Panunumpa sa Watawat.

The Department of

Education (DepEd) has made amendments to the “Panatang Makabayan,” the Philippine pledge of allegiance recited by millions of students nationwide.

In an order dated February 14, 2023, DepEd revised one of the pledge’s lines changing nagdarasal into nananalangin.

Because of this, the revised line will be now stated as ‘naglilingkod, nag-aaral at nananalangin nang buong katapatan’.

According to the said order, the Linguistic Society of the Philippines that this proposal to use ‘nananalangin’ is better and has a stronger meaning.

To top it all off, the Pambansang Samahan ng Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino agreed to use ‘nananalangin’ because it is more exclusive and solemn, and the choice of words were thought about more ethical

The patriotic vow and the oath to the Philippine flag is stated after the student sang the National Anthem, also known as the Lupang Hinirang.

Basic education challenges

The Department of Education (DepEd), in an effort to resolve the basic education woes, designed the MATATAG Agenda –a program for every Filipino learner.

DepEd recently launched a new agenda which aims to improve learning systems in the country that work to address basic education challenges. This is a step to get to a healthy future country as this move puts aids on woes that the Philippines has. The country is facing many problems in education that are in need to be debated and given attention to, which DepEd is working on with this agenda.

In high school, teachers lament the inability of some of the students to construct a correct sentence or read. Private school sectors have been attacked as profit-making institutions, passing those students in college who later become part of the nation’s uneducated, unemployed. According to Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), 28.2% of the unemployed were junior high school graduates, and 20.9% were college graduates. This deteriorating quality of education in the country will be covered by the first component of the MATATAG agenda.

To make curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, active, and responsible citizens. This is to improve the curriculum by focusing on foundational skills and embedding competencies. By focusing on this, students have the right knowledge for jobs that they will soon work on.

Studies have shown that the deteriorating quality of education is because of the low government budget for education, poor learning environment, the content of curriculum, and the lack of school facilities and its poor quality, this is where the second component of the agenda will come in.

To take steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education facilities and services. There are many students enrolled in the country and the shortage of classrooms is evident by the number of students that are inside of one classroom as well as the conditions of it. Philippines is prone to typhoon and some of the of the classrooms are not typhoon proof, causing the schooling to be temporarily stopped every time a typhoon hits or continue classes inside the huts. The agenda is to build resilient facilities that will stand along with the students that are very eager to learn.

To take good care of learners by promoting well-being, inclusive education, and a positive environment and to give support for teachers to teach better are the last two in the four components of creating a MATATAG nation. Teachers serve as education’s hands to reach children, yet they are underpaid. With this agenda, teachers will finally get what they deserve.

No one will be left behind in this improved MATATAG nation.

Adjusting to the ‘Better’ Normal

AsCovid-19 entered the Philippines, our lively country had been lifeless. The covid caused a lockdown that had a huge impact on us, in our mental health, in our business, in our daily lives, and in our academics.

As the lockdown is lifted in our country, one of the issues that we, students, and teachers, have to go through is the transition from online class to face to face classes.

When lockdown has been declared, students are forced to learn visually. We are used to waking up in the morning and turning on our technology to attend our classes. But not all students are the same, some of them attend the classes, close

People’s social skills lack and worsen as we keep locked in our house during lockdown. And because of this, students are having a hard time communicating with people during face to face as we are used to interacting through videos and through technology.

But as the days we spend in school pass, we are slowly getting used to the better normal again. We are gaining back our academic performances and social skills that the lockdown took from us.

sionless. To think that women in the past were only looked at as a tool for reproduction is just absurd. The thought of only working inside the household and serve their husbands is a frightening story to live on. The world had progressed, and society had developed new perspectives and mindsets. Society allows us to have a voice for ourselves and for others, we have more rights, and we know the capabilities that we hold. Who wouldn’t think that those who they expect to do less can lead the elite? Can educators be? Can imple-

ment laws? And can win our country a gold? It is saddening that women in the past were capable of things a man can do but the mindset of people and the society are stopping them from showing it. Not because men are physically stronger means women are weak, they just had no voice for themselves. Associated with the women of today who are strongly standing on their beliefs and fiercely not allowing men to hurt them. There may be cases of abuse about women but actions to it are moving. The world is cruel, but

we adapt and stand strong despite brutality. Women’s month is not just a celebration but a movement to share stories of hardships that women are experiencing up to this modern day to spread awareness. Women have come a long way to reach this freedom that we are living. I am proud to claim that a woman is not just for reproduction, nor for domestic activities. A woman is a foundation. A strength. And that is what we are aiming for to make a great deal of realization among those who are left with the mindsets of yesterday.

Rights and Responsibilities

Solving the widespread problem of bullying will not happen overnight, nor can it be done by the Government alone. Bullying is as important as addressing social issues like corruption and drugs. These

issues is also widely talked about in the country which requires attention of not only the Government but also of us individuals.

Need for classroom equipment

Dear Editor,

I am a grade 10 student and lately the weather has been hotter than usual and I have noticed how our classroom, not just our classroom, also other classrooms in different grade levels lack classroom equipments such as ceiling fans. Some may seem to have enough fans in their room, but in reality, some of those said fans are broken or have some issues causing students to not focus on the lesson during classes because of the said issue.

I hope that through this letter, our need for sufficient numbers of classroom equipment will be addressed soon. We look forward to spending our class period in a cool, fresh classroom.

Editor’s Acknowledgment letter Response to equipment request

Dear Aly,

I have read your letter entitled ‘Need for classroom equipment”, which I myself understand how hard it is to focus when it’s scorching hot and you can’t even do anything about it.

In acknowledgment of your letter, we will try our best to accom modate your request by letting the school head know about the issue that most students are facing and hopefully will help in resolving this current problem.

Yours Sincerely,

same bullying issues. Physically whether inside or outside. But not only this small school is dealing with bullying but also the big ones, from public schools to private schools. Despite the campaign movements against bullying that the Government had instigated, have you ever wondered why bullying still came out as a wide problem? An extensive problem cannot be solved by just one hand working. Some of the students’ root of quarry is using the internet especially among girls. Bullying can happen anytime, anywhere to anyone. If an individual has the knowledge to identify bullying on social media and will speak up to point out the issue instead of ignoring it and taking it as a joke, will make great progress. Bullies pick on someone who they supposed to be weak, shy or do not have a lot of friends. Ignoring a scene of bullying

also happens, not wanting to be the target is hopeless. An individual should speak up and each of us should be friendly from every student to teachers to school personnels. Home exists as the root of the problem as well. Kids who witnessed abuse between parents or have been and are being abused by a parent or sibling have come out to be bullies outside their home as they can repeat their surroundings’ behavior at school. Parents have the biggest influence on their children and acting as a good role model for them will result in a better individual. Prioritizing a child’s mentality and behavior development is a must, not just nurturing them to be a strong being. Home is where all are starting. An answer to a free, safe, and a happy living is by ending hate. By not only the government working but among all individuals.

A Modern Generation of

Amodern generation of writers has undergone major changes due to the pandemic. The Journalist of Caanawan National High School prepared and worked hard for the Division School Press Conference.

As a result of their hard work, they became the upholders of freedom of the press even at their young age. Campus Journalism has an avenue to the youth to hone their skills, to be disciplined, and to think critically.

On the other hand, Student Journalists' duty is to deliver their colleagues' voices on the campus. It brings the students' opinion louder. This connection is valuable especially since a lot of students were affected the most by loneliness and social isolation due to the pandemic. Journalists are able to broadcast and uplift the opinions of each student.

On top of these they only aim to update students in the latest trends and principles of journalists writing in view of

nalism but also in education. Campus Journalism serves as the public “watchman” at the campus by monitoring the issues and position of everyone.

Hence, to help students become aware of what’s happening around them. They also improve the skills of communicating with others.

The benefits of this is to help each student and school administration to practice freedom of expressing opinion, fairness, and truthfulness. However, the big challenge that they encountered was the part that they needed to think about the impact of their article on the campus.

The most recent change for them is the Politicization of reporting or writing every topic. The one part of the evolution of the campus journalism into a modern industry at relativity and subjective truth.

The journalist's modern generation only proves that the voice of people is always the voice that everyone needs to

Manystudents are captivated by the foods that are found inside the school cafeteria. Various kinds of breads, vegetable egg rolls and others. There’s also a side dish that comes along with pancit that is commonly known as “bahog”. Canteen goods are not only tasty and healthy, but also affordable.

Because of the number of students, many stalls and stores have come out that make it seem like a small market or food hub outside of the school premises. “Canteen Outside” as what students call them. These food stalls also sell various types of food like milk tea and other products not available in the school canteen.

However, behind the satisfaction of the students is the waste that is left littering around the school that has led to an increase in the number of waste materials piling up in the trash bins and the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Hence, the move of the school administration to set and limit the time for the selling hours of the so called ‘outside canteen’. Also, the sellers from outside must secure a permit from the barangay office to legally operate.

These stores are earning that it became a source of income to support their families’ needs, but the responsibility that comes after it should also be performed. Nothing else than the safety of their consumers from the preparation of the food to when the students have eaten it. It is also a must to maintain the surroundings’ cleanliness before and after their business, additionally, it should not be the school’s obligation.

They can sell after the campus’ classes and dismissal, nonetheless, the surroundings should be left as it was before they came. Always remember that Caanawan National High School is a safe place, whether inside or outside, and it is everyone’s right to have a clean, bright, and safe second home at all times.

A new daily exercise routine in schools and community learning centers was born. Every morning before the classes or the programs at school begin, students are required to dance “Galaw Pilipinas”. When they hear the beat, their bodies automatically move.

COVID-19 took a light in the lives of students. They spend hours lying down and just focusing on the phone; their health has been neglected. Hence, their poor academic performance amid distance learning. These were the students during the pandemic, a deadly virus that spread around the world and had a profound impact. But we Filipinos are wise; the Department of Education (DepEd) has launched Galaw Pilipinas, the Department’s National Calisthenics Exercise Program that will help promote active lifestyles among Filipinos.

The students’ interest in studying and energy were restored, and it gave the students hope as they conquered their future. The routine was inspired by simple steps inspired

by Philippine folk dances, festival movements, and arnis stances in recognition to it as the national martial arts and sports.

The school conducted a competition for the best Galaw Pilipinas dancers. Every grade level participated, and with their perseverance and determination to win, they successfully performed their own routine of the dance.

Grade

7 won third place, Grade 9 bagged second place, and “Ates at Kuyas,” which are Grade 12 learners, secured the first place. With this, Galaw Pilipinas became significant to every student.

“The Department developed Galaw Pilipinas as a response to the impact of the pandemic on our learners’ reduced physical activities that affected their overall health. Our role in promoting physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle among our learners has become even more relevant and essential. Are you ready, campers?

Caanawan National High School held its 12th year of backyard camping with this year’s theme: “Scouting Education for Sustainable Development”. The day before the backyard camping, you can see students rushing to the nearest convenience store to buy some food that will last for two days.

Clouds are still covering the sky, and the sun has not yet risen, but Caanawenians woke up early to prepare for the first day and to assemble their tents. At exactly 8 a.m., when the program began, loud shouts from students covered the gymnasium. Some students are afraid to spend their night at school because of rumors that there are ghosts walking in the hallway, while others are celebrating because they are excited to experience the activities again that had been interrupted for a long period due to the spread of COVID-19.

Before the first day started, school principal Ma’am Jocelyn T. Leonardo oriented the students about the purpose of backyard camping. For you, what is backyard camping?

Well, your possible answer might be to melt marshmallows while initiating “chikahan” with your friends. However, its true purpose is to teach the students how to learn the basic skills and to be prepared as they face

challenges in life. Also, it is for the enhancement of students’ discipline.

Hiking without mountains.

On day one, scouts’ adviser Ma’am Vanessa B. Pedalizo led the campers to the mountain named Mt. Abu Sayyaf; since there’s no mountain in CNHS, they got a creative idea where they blindfolded the campers’ eyes and made them imagine that they were hiking. With the help of senior scouts, they guided every student through the long adventure. Senior scouts designed six stations that each camp must complete; with the assistance of assigned teachers, campers happily and safely completed all six stations. That was just the start of the challenges; even their eyes are sleepy, and their knees are trembling. A delicious aroma is traveling around the school, and their cooking skills are put to test in preparing for their dinner as a warmup before the activities at night begin. Crowds went wild when candidates from every camp for Mr. BSP and Ms. GSP walked on stage and showed their witty humor. Laughs and claps were heard during the competition, and at the final round, only two candidates remained. Kate Ashley Ganayo from Grade 8 won the title of Ms. GSP, and Luis Gadon from Grade 12 secured the Mr. BSP title.

Blazing part Lights are off, silence reigns, and sweat envelopes the quadrangle where the highlight of backyard camping will be held. The most exciting part is yet to come, but before that, a short skit regarding light-hunting was performed by senior scouts named Sophia Balmadrid, Jetskey Cariaso, Kurt Ryu Ganayo, and Jeremiah Czar Calinawagan. “Bigyan n’yo ako ng liwanag” after that line, a blazing fire from above lights the whole quadrangle. Everyone witnessed the lightning in the woods, and some are taking videos and enjoying the campfire. The bonfire has been the tradition of the school as Caanawenians came along together to circle the fired-up woods. This part is very significant to every camper; they say it is their favorite part. When the fire was slowly dying, campers gathered at the gymnasium for the continuation of the night’s events. The CNHS band performed music as sweet as candy. Students and teachers are jamming together; a lovely performance by Ma’am Teresita M. Circa, Head Teacher, wakes up the sleepy souls of the students. After the activities at night, at exactly 11 p.m., campers are required to go to sleep. They should have a rest for the next day’s energy as they climb the obstacle course.

Are you ready, campers? Yes, we are.

A Magical Journey of Words

People have multiple hobbies. They watch movies or tv shows to entertain themselves or documentaries and educational shows to learn. Some people’s hobbies can be riding on a bicycle, or going on a hike because they can travel from one place to another. There are those who spend time knitting, baking or cooking as it allows them to create a new masterpiece as they finish making them.

But one of the most common hobbies is reading. They can read from their phone or with their physical book. They can read in their room or outside their comfort zone. You either spend most of your time saying “one last chapter” yet keep on scrolling or turning the page or spend all of your money collecting those books. you learn and get entertained while reading and can take you from different places to another without moving physically. It’s a hobby anybody can get a hang on and get hooked on!

To think that reading is not only some sort of leisure but also serves as the basic building block for learning. Allowing them to expand their vocabulary and broaden their comprehension will surely help in their future endeavors

Reading is an essential basic skill that many can develop in their early age. According to experts, most children are expected to read by the age of 6. They begin from developing their basic reading skills, recognizing the alphabets, numbers to spelling few phrases such as their names until they can begin reading long texts. Often starting off with typical storybooks like children’s book, fairy tales.

Has it ever crossed your mind of how magical reading is? It is amazing how a

person’s mind may work when they read. One can imagine a whole new world through reading and create a character with its own personality by just reading a few of their descriptions. This is one of the benefits reading gives us. Your brain functions whenever you read, thus improving your ability to comprehend and recognize. It develops your skills to adapt and be open to new things. Not only that, making reading a habit has many more advantages in one’s life. They can improve your language skills, comprehension and widening your vocabulary, that may strengthen your writing

ability as time goes by.

It also has an effect on your mental health. It has benefits because it makes you more empathetic, and knowledgeable and stimulates your imagination. University of Sussex conducted a study that shows stress is reduced by 68%. It reduces tension and relaxes muscles, improving our sleeping habit and mental health as medicinal therapies to combat depression can be reduced by reading habits

Another fascinating fact about reading is that they provide broad knowledge. Its text does not limit the information as they present different views

and intake on a particular topic. It helps in terms of understanding from a different perspective, from an individual whose perceptions are the exact opposite of yours. It teaches readers to respect and listen to opinions and not be conceited and selfish.

Reading is more than just recognizing letters. It’s not only a basic building block for learning but it is also a skill we need to sharpen and develop along the way. There is more to reading than just being a hobby and it shows as one venture through the magical journey of words.

CELEBRATION AND CARE

Unbeknownst to us, having a family day is one of the most effective ways to strengthen the relationship and fellowship of everyone in the family.

Life is not in our hands, so while there is time, let’s give each other kindness. We do not know that every moment of togetherness is very important because we do not hold our lives. And as our children grow up, they also have their own dreams and aspirations in life which is the reason why they tend to distance themselves from us.

Family day is like a holiday that a family takes every week and on which we also spend time. Each family member will be able to bond and feel each other’s love. We can also say that a family day does not simply entail going out and sightseeing. It can also be done at home or school to give time to each other. It can also be accomplished in a variety of simple ways. There are numerous ways to celebrate Family Day.

In high school, there are lots of wonderful events. The line “High school life, ba’t ang high school life ay walang kasing saya” from Sharon Cuneta’s song titled ‘High School Life’ denotes the incomparability of the events that take place during high school.

Building BloCkS for lEArnErS

Everychild’s dream is to attend school and graduate. When they reach a certain age to go to school, they excitedly wear their shoes to step out of their doorstep and start the journey of learning. They learn how to do basic and average math until they come across difficult topics. They start recognizing different kinds of texts and defining meanings until they are the ones instructed to create one and read them in front of the crowd. And most of all, they learn that there is always room for improvement in the four-cornered room they reside in.

But as they grow older, they start learning reality the hard way.

The teachers, however, are no longer strangers to hardships. They already encountered them from yesterday’s experience. Insufficient amount of budget, shortage of classroom and school buildings, lack of learning and teaching materials were never new to them. This is when their ‘magic’ works –being resourceful in strwessful times that are way beyond their control.

In the recent Basic Education Report 2023, led by Vice President and Department of Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte, she emphasized

the most pressing issues that hinder the country’s education system from developing –insufficient school facilities and resources, the Department’s procurement practices, enrollment concerns, the curriculum’s advantages, and teaching and learning outcomes.

She mentioned the lack of school infrqwastructure. Although the latest inventory shows that there are 327, 851 school buildings in the country, only 104, 536 are in good condition. In addition, there are also several buildings that need minor and major repairing. Duterte insisted that the schools are not calamity-proof and are prone to catastrophic events such as typhoons, floodings, landslides, earthquakes, and armed conflicts.

Another important matter she mentioned is the curriculum’s effectivity to employability as many expressed concerns about the how the implemented work immersion in the Senior High Department is not for actual skills acquisitions but is only for familiarization.

This has eventually caused the K-12 curriculum’s purpose to fail the students as its promise to produce graduates that are employable remains as a promise until the present time.

Lastly, the weak teaching method of the K-12 curriculum was revealed as it fails to address 21st learning skills. The support the teachers are receiving is fragile and needs further support. However, the system is in no condition to assist both the teachers and the learners, as it is unable to meet the required standards and expectations.

Thus, on the 30th of January 2023, Monday, the Department of Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte launched the MATATAG Agenda: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa, a campaign which aims to provide support and solutions to basic education woes both the learners and educators are experiencing. With small steps, true to words, consistent actions and helping hands all working together with the public’s cooperation, the country can overcome the basic education woes. One of the best things a learning institution can offer is their top-quality education. However, before this can be achieved, there are multiple changes one can undergo, challenges they will suffer and solutions they need to make.

The process includes establishing a strong physical

and mental foundation, whether it is the school facilities, the curriculum, the mindset, and determination, to support the

and the teachers as they clear the path and build blocks for the present and future learners of the country.

Fire Prevention, a Job for Everybody

Inthe month of March, there are two events that are marked in every school calendar. The first is dedicated for all the women as their efforts and hard work are recognized. It is more known as National Women’s Day, wherein March 8 is declared as National Women’s Day under Republic Act No. 6949 Series of 1990 and the month of March declared as the observance of Women’s Role according to the Presidential Proclamation No. 277 Series of 1988.

And the second main event that is commemorated during the month of March is the National Fire Prevention Month in accordance with the Presidential Proclamation No. 115, Series of 1966, whereas various school activities are conducted such as fire drills, making fire safety posters or slogans, promoting safety precautions in order to avoid fire incidents in the household or buildings and raising awareness on how to handle them.

It was stated by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), that March is one of the hottest months as it is the beginning of summer in the Philippines. It is also observed by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) the rising cases of fire incidents in the country, according to their data.

Accidents happen all the time, they say. From minimal injuries to vehicle accidents, to escalated accidents that may likely to cause fires and serious injuries, these are

just a few mishaps that may occur in your home or your workplace. However, with the current weather in the Philippines, the temperature rising, the hot and dry air that dampens our skin, serious accidents like heat stroke and serious fire emergencies.

In relation to the fire prevention month, BFP has shared some tips to avoid or

prevent fire accidents: ‘Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog, Hindi Ka Nag-iisa.’ This year’s theme focuses on not only an individual’s safety but the whole community’s too. The Bureau of Fire Protection has reminded the public that it is important to join fire drills, seminars and the like for them to know what to do during a fire emergency.

A letter to the enemy

My Dear Enemy,

Do you still remember me? Those of us who have been together for several years—is it still etched in your memory? To this day, I am still here, following you. Most people try to forget. Do you still remember our fading memories, a few years later, when I went out in public? Oh, my love, do you still remember me?

A few years have passed, and many are angry with me because of me. Because of me, the parks were closed, and higher education and above all, education, seem to have crippled the teachers and students when I was suffering from the disease. My time has come, but everyone is not happy with me. Why? Did I do something bad to the people around me?

My mind is confused; I do not know why they hate me. How are

my friends? I hope they are well. Just hide me in the name of COVID, a citizen of Wuhan, China. I am a disease that kills everyone. I know why they hate me.

COVID-19, or better known as Coronavirus 2019, is a pandemic that has destroyed the lives of different people around the world. They are a plague on me. And that is true; the plague I caused when I spread it had a severe effect on the world; even parks and schools were closed, and even with the facemask, people complained that they could not breathe.

I am seen as an enemy, just like those I mentioned who say that I am a plague to the majority. Until everything changed, I will soon disappear from this human world. This is how scientists punish me.

Punishment for me is the rapid

vaccination of people. Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca are just a few of the vaccines that will destroy me, but this is the fate: I will put people’s lives first so they can do whatever they want to do better. Even if I lose weight, I will still smile at what people can do to be free, because I am getting weaker. I hope they still do not think of me as an enemy. I am still around you. Take care of me if you do not want to be lost or free.

Face mask and face shield are still needed to be safe from me. Every minute is important to everyone. Be vigilant and be safe in everything because one mistake can make someone disappear. I am about to leave the world, my dear enemy. I hope you have forgiven me, and I hope you will carry the memory of our time together.

Sincerely, Coronavirus

In celebration of the fire prevention month, Caanawan National High School has executed a few fire drills this month of March. An orientation was then held at 2 in the afternoon, last Thursday, March 9, explaining what they had observed from the students that took part and a few reminders and tips were given.

circuit regularly and unplugging appliances not in use in avoidance of overloading and overheating that may cause sparking.

2. Fire is common to start when leaving in the middle of cooking, do not leave your gas stove on and/or unattended, and also check for gas leaks.

3. Properly handle flammable materials. Do not store it in a warm area.

4. Keep it in a storage that is out of reach from children.

5. Throw away things that are common fire hazards.

6. Formulate your escape plan in case of an emergency.

7. Dial emergency hotlines and report the fire incident that happened.

A Silent Killer

TheCOVID 19 pandemic did not only affect the economic livelihood of the people – their statistics growth decreasing to 2.2% in 2023 –but also targeting physical and mental health. Because just like how the pandemic virus spread uncontrollably, so are the thoughts that crept up inside the human minds.

Basing on the data from World Health Organization (WHO), 154 million people suffered from depression and a million were identified with schizophrenia. The Philippines have recorded 1, 145, 871 and 223, 422 people suffering from the conditions mentioned. And 877, 000 died due to suicide every year.

High numbers shouldn’t really worry the public. In fact, it’s supposed to be good news! However, it never ends well if they are mentioned in concerning situations. Especially if those situations concern your mental and physical health.

An individual’s mental health focuses on its emotional, psychological and social well-being. They are the ones responsible for how one think, feel, and act. And they are the most affected if ever a person encounters a problem with their mood, thinking and behavior.

Depression. Anxiety. Mood disorder. Personality disorder. Eating disorder. PostTraumatic Stress Disorder. Just several common mental health issues a person may develop from traumatic, stressful and

problems, social relationships, life, and changes can also be a factor that may trigger them. However, unlike any issues or illnesses that can be seen by the naked eye, they are mostly observed keenly as said illnesses form unnoticeable habits that some people turn a blind eye to. They disregard facts, deceive and tell you that it’s all in your mind. It’s not real. But it is.

And they kill a person silently without anybody knowing. They change them into someone they don’t want to turn into. Hurting themselves in the process and those around them. Thus, they neglect symptoms that confirm they may be suffering. They refuse to ask for help, despite needing it. They instill drowning thoughts that impact them badly and go through it.

Alone.

Standing up after being damaged severely is not easy. It takes time, that’s for sure. It takes a lot of assurance and validations from others that are certainly draining. But that’s how healing from things you suffered in silence. It gives you confidence as time passes by until you wear it like a dangling jewelry, letting others see it. And that is a reminder that you are not alone in your battle. You have yourself. So, remember to be kind to others. Be kinder to yourself.

Whatis the secret of Caanawan National High School’s success in making their plants in Demo farm healthy?

Caanawan National High School is well-known for agricultural programs because there is a large space for senior high students who will take ag riculture, and that is the Demo Farm. Every school uses technology to maintain the health of their plants. Three technologies are used in CNHS: aquaponics, hydroponics, and vermitea. Vermitea, however, is a technology that only the school has.

How to prepare for an earthquake?

ThePhilippines is one of the countries that are located in the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’.

According to the National Geographic, Seventy-five percent of Earth’s volcanoes— more than 450 volcanoes—are located along the Ring of Fire. Ninety percent of Earth’s earthquakes occur along its path, including the planet’s most violent and dramatic seismic events.

In most situations, you can most certainly protect yourself and survive an earthquake if you know what to do.

Earthquakes happen without warning, we don’t know when the next major earthquake will happen, so it is best to know what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

Earthquakes can strike suddenly and without warning.

Earthquakes can result in the ground shaking, soil liquefaction, landslides, fissures, avalanches, fires and tsunamis.

The extent of destruction and harm caused by an earthquake depends on the magnitude, intensity and duration, the local geology, the time of day that it occurs, building and industrial plant design and materials, the risk-management measures put in place. Here are some tips on

what to do during an earthquake:

Step 1. Stay calm and stay put

Step 2. Duck, cover and hold under somewhere stable (ex. desk or table)

Step 3. Stay away from glass windows, shelves, and heavy and hanging objects

Step 4. Exit the building only once shaking stops via stairs. Elevators are not to be used.

Step 5. Evacuate to an open area away from trees, electric posts and landslide prone areas

Step 6. If you’re in a moving vehicle, step out and move towards a safer area.

Step 7. Avoid overpasses, slowly stop in an open area, and remain in your vehicle There you have it! Knowing what to do during an earthquake can save our lives.

And most importantly, participating in earthquake drills at school can prepare us from unexpected natural disasters.

No summer season in PH

From the start of the month of March until June, the Philippines encounter the hot and dry weather, and is known as the start of summer season.

But did you know?

The Philippines doesn’t really have summer season. To be more specific, Philippines does not have “summer”. Filipinos commonly use the term to refer to the hot and dry season they experience.

According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical And Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), because the Philippines is close to the equator, the country experience annual climate patterns, known as the two major seasons.

Rainy / Wet season from June to November

Dry season from December to May

Meanwhile, there are two subdivisions to describe the dry season:

The cool dry season from December to February

The hot dry season from March to May

Have you ever imagined plants sitting down and sipping a cup of tea? Well, that is possible as Caanawan National High School discovers a new fertilizer for plants made from vermicompost. But what is vermicompost? This is one of the most effective organic fertilizers made from waste and the excess food of worms. An African Night Crawler (Eudrilus eugeniae) is a type of worm that is capable of growing here in the Philippines. They use this to make vermicompost and vermimeal. ANC can expand easily and rapidly.

When vermicast, or waste from worms, is soaked in water and brewed using a compost tea brewer, the result is called vermitea. It is a technique that successfully propagates advantageous bacteria. Vermitea, a liquid fertilizer that resembles tea, gets its name from the Greek terms vermi, which means worms, and tea. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) provided the inspiration for this. Teachers taught their students on the technology after studying it. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and growth-promoting rhizobacteria are among the nutrients that vermitea is abundant in. It is essential for the growth and development of plants, aids in the beginning of root formation and growth, boosts soil organic matter levels, and protects environmental quality.

Simple but powerful and environmentally friendly.

"It is low-cost and lowtech; materials can be found in our environment, and the procedure is simple, but it is scientifically based technology," stated Sheila Marie D. Baluran, Grade 12 TVL-AFA consultant. Vermitea can be made in a number of different methods. Actively aerated compost tea, which involves adding your vermicompost (in a linen or fine mesh bag) to a bucket of water with an air pump added, will produce the most beneficial bacteria. After that, leave the air pump running constantly for at least 24 hours to aerate the water/vermicompost. Many gardeners think this is a great approach and highly recommend it.

Compost tea can be made in another method. Vermicompost must be steeped in a container of water overnight using this technique. Simple

addition of 1/4 cup of vermicompost or vermicastings to a gallon of water and subsequent straining through a fine screen or filter can accomplish this. Even simpler is to pour 1/4 cup of vermicompost into a paper coffee filter and secure it with cotton yarn before steeping some vermicompost tea. After that, just put this in a bucket or one-gallon watering can, fill it with water, and let it overnight. Put the bag in the compost pile once you're done with it. Using vermicompost tea to feed your plants is a simple, efficient, and organic way to do it, and your plants will benefit from it whether you use this method or another.

Vermitea is a secret of Caanawan National High School’s success in making their plants in Demo farm healthy.

COVID-19 vaccine for our safety

Withthe ongoing pandemic many experience uncertainty and uneasiness in almost everythingpeople, food, environment, and especially the vaccine. We can survive without the vaccine, but certainly not with the COVID-19 that’s still existing. So in case you need assurance that the vaccine does indeed protect us against the virus. Here are some informa-

tion for the one health week. COVID-19 is an illness caused by coronavirus. It affects the lungs, the airways, and other parts of the body.

The deaths are due to COVID-19 and not the vaccine. Their vaccination has nothing to do with those reported to have died of Covid-19

The amount of time you can get vaccinated depends on your age or health.

For the age of five to

there are many vaccination sites in the country, contact your LGU to find out where the vaccination site is in your area. Voila! There you have it. It is important to know the significance of being vaccinated. Vaccines train our immune system to recognize the targeted virus and create antibodies to fight off the disease without getting the disease itself. After vaccination, the body is ready to fight the virus if it is later exposed to it, thereby preventing illness. The vaccine isn’t just

According to Republic Act 10176 and the Expanded National Greening Program of the Government thrugh the recent Department of the Interior and Local Government Memorandum Circular 2016133, Tree Planting is one of the many measures to save the environment which is an effective way to mitigate climate change; even a single tree is believed to be very essential to combat global warming.

Expected participants of said activity all came on time for the tree planting activity, 83.33% of involvement and cooperation were observed from the participants who actively participated in the event.

The activity became a success through the collabo-

ration of Caanawan National High School teachers and learners, Barangay Caanawan officials headed by chiefman Mr. Bernardo Manocdoc, and

Reading Team intensifies Project Bright, sets up Reading Lab

Toaddress the problems in reading, the school’s reading team set up a Reading Laboratory to intensify Project Bright, a reding program consisting of a series of reading interventions.

The projects in reading designed by the school is aligned to the Brigada Pagbasa campaign of the Department of Education (DepEd).

The campaign was started nationwide in 2020 as the shift in modality from faceto-face classes to online and modular classes created learning gaps for students at the time. Brigada Pagbasa aimed to address the issue through the collaborative efforts of volunteers such as parents and alumni.

Mam Abigail Sigua, a teacher from CNHS, explained how the campaign started in the school and what activities were done to help students.

“Nagkaroon ng orientation. Sa orientation pinakilala

doon kung ano yung Brigada Pagbasa, tungkol saan siya, ano yung objective niya…”, she stated in the interview.

In addition to the orientation, Mam Abigail also stated that there were simulations and training given to volunteers on how to effectively teach students how to read. Materials

were given to parents and regular visits were done to assess the students’ progress.

HIV infects teens, kids says report

Accordingto the Department of Health (DOH), 86 of the new cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), reported in January were children and teenagers.

In a report from the Department of Health (DOH), there were 79 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years old, and seven children less than 10 years old.

With 1,454 new cases, DOH said that there was an average of 46 cases reported every day in January 2023.

DOH data also showed that the bulk of the new HIV cases were from the National Capital Region, Calabarzon, Central

Luzon, Central Visayas and Western Visayas. These regions comprised 69 percent of the total number of cases.

Of the total cases, 48 percent belonged to the 25 to 34 years old age group followed by the 15 to 24 years old age group with 30 percent and 35 to 49 years old at 18 percent. Caanawan

The intrams was held on January 14 with the theme “Shaping the Future through Sports”. Many students participated in the competition, even though the heat was burning through their entire body. Some of them were fortunate to win while several participants failed to claim the triumph.

champion of the match while G-12 players were down to the second place and third place for the G-10 players.

Discriminated Opportunities

Variousindividuals consider volleyball men as homosexual. Is it because they do some quick slap on the butt telling each other “Good game”? You call that being gay? And some people criticize female players, labeling them as lesbian or bisexual. If some of them are, so what!

Most of the volleyball players are not homosexual or bisexual, just because of the two factors that several of you stated. Gender is the only thing that separates the two from each other. Do you stereotype volleyball players based on how they encourage others on the court?

24-years-old, famous Filipino volleyball player and currently the Setter, Libero of Choco Mucho Flying Titans, Volleyball Superstar Deanna Wong, opened up about loving who she loves and being part

of the LGBTQIA+ community. She faced all gossips thrown at her and responded to it confidently and proudly as she showed the entire world who she is.

People cannot define a player’s life just because of their perspective and opinion towards them. They are more powerful than you expect. Remember that they have every right to choose whatever path they want. You cannot control every step that they take. You do not own them.

Even If society cannot accept who they are, their discrimination will serve as motivation to accelerate all their opportunities and for every judgement they might get, they just keep on pursuing what they care the most and do not worry about it, from the time when someone stands for the community.

crashed below the undisputed champion but clinch the second place while the unwinged John Kerby Peralta of G-11 failed to fly-high and ended up in the third place. G-10 Rheashin Tagaro became the badminton girl’s titleholder, when she paved every opponent blocking her way making Princes Jhen of G-8 her second and Jakielyn Deleon of G-12 her third.

Feet of Victory.

Jenard Lambinicio (G10), and Ericka Ramos (G-11) reigned the Athletic boys and girls after they reaped every thorn in their path. Jervie Bejarin (G-10) and Jamby Tayong (G-9) ascended to second while Aldrin Rivera (G-8) and Claire Portacio (G-9) tried to outrun but their strength only brought them to last place. CNHS added Mobile

Legends as per student request and the G-10 savaged and wiped out their enemies with G-8 students placing second and G-11 as third.

Height matters.

G-10 Basketball players proved them wrong after they prevailed against the senior and other junior players, and the G-11 and G-12 got the last place left by the Orange Blasters for them.

Soaring to the top, G-12 white eagles clawed every opponent against them, and the G-9 Purple Armies kept getting denied climbing up top, so they stayed in second place, while the G-11 tried every way to reach them but crashed in third place.

Grappled achievement.

G-8 girls left their rivals choked in the battlefield, when they

wrestled with all their might in the tug-of-war. G-12 grasped to take the second throne, and third for the G-11.

Steppingstones.

G-12 girls and G-9 boys fished first place in Kadang-kadang, G-8 girls and G-12 boys advanced to second place, but the destination went to G-11 girls and G-7 boys. Rise.

NO PAIN, NO GAIN: CLRAA qualifiers born to conquer

Determination and persistennce, words that best describes the Athletes of Caanawan National High School that sacrificed and develop a strong foundation just to reach their dream title. Exhausted, sleepless, and burned, but they are still standing and continuing to practice day and night just to prepare for every future struggle.

Shaped by time, they preferred to stay outside rather than holding a pen, they concentrated only on their primary objectives, trusted every process, and all their hard work paid off when they claimed their promising dreams.

Focus on the goal, Claire Portacio, Erica Marcos, and Rheashin Tagaro. We cannot call them lucky because every second of their High School life was dedicated to their sports and they are the only secondary students of CNHS that qualified in the CLRAA.

Portacio. As a result of the love between Mr. Romel Portacio and Mrs. Virginia Portacio. Born on August 10, 2007, in the city of San Jose. Currently in ninth grade (9-Integrity), with the saying “Matutong tumayo kapag nadapa,” has been the key to her CLRAA journey. Although the rehearsal is tiring for her but run-

ning makes her happy. She said, she still believes that in shaping an athlete, it is necessary to help each other, “I can make a great athlete through teamwork.”

Marcos. A passion for running since elementary school resulted in a ticket to CLRAA. During his 17-year stay in the world, she started venturing into the field of sports when she was ten years old, wanting to prove to her relatives that she could achieve a lot and go far by playing sports. For her, track and field are part of her life, because of this she has met many different people, places she has been to and different lessons she has learned. “Tiwala at kompyansa sa sarili,” is her investment in being an athlete. Apart from running, she also likes drawing and painting, but due to lack of time, she doesn’t do it.

Tagaro. Only CNHS shuttler to depart for CLRAA. Her interest in the field of badminton began when she was in the fourth grade, and it was decided to continue until now. she said that by playing, she feels free from reality, as if Badminton is her “escape”. Her parents
