Uncle Wax Where do you usually perform?

When did you start your music career?

Most of a regular residencies are in and around West and South West London. I perform a lot in Europe and about once I fell in love with music at and early age but it wasnt until I was a year in Singapore and the Maldives. I hope to get back to 14 when I knew I couldn’t be without it. I moved to Auckland New Zealand for a tour soon. in 1994 to study Audio Engineering at SAE then in 95 I moved Where can we purchase your latest songs or album? to Hamilton to study music at Wintech. My major was in Songwriting. It was a wonderful time. Made some life long All my releases are available on all the digital platforms like friends and had some amazing teachers. And of course I learnt Spotify and iTunes. so much about songwriting, harmony, solfege and ear training, Are you excited to feature as the Guest Artist for LPFW? production and studio skills and the music industry itself. When did you move to London? I moved to Sydney in 2001. Playing in a few bars around town then moved to the Maldives where I performed for about a year then finally set foot in London on November 2003. You have recently launched an album, please share with us what inspired you? My last release was called ERODED. An EP of five tracks. This record was inspired by heartbreak, loss and being apart from someone. Unfortunately these things can happen in life. It’s a form of release and healing for me when I write a song from a life experience. It’s very important for me and helps me get through certain situations. Where do you see Pacific Artisans growth in London? It is on the rise but it would be amazing to see and hear more. I performed the other night in central London and after the show I met three young Pacific bros who are studying and performing Opera here! Amazing! Then we have Ngati Ranana and Beats Polynesia who are always representing and supporting from London and Europe.

14

I am very honoured and extremely excited to be featured as the Guest Artist for LPFW Will you be traveling around the UK to launch your latest album? Yes I will ! My next EP is due for release early 2020. It is another EP of 5 tracks. This record sees me collaborating with a few different songwriters. The first single is due out January 2020.

The New Zealand Society UK New Zealand Collection at the V &A Prints and Drawings Room V&A Museum, South Kensington 12:00 PM on Saturday 18th January 2020 The New Zealand Society is getting a private curator's talk and tour on the New Zealand collections in the Prints and Drawings Room at the world leading museum of design The V&A.

he New Zealand Society UK was founded in 1927 registered as a non-profit society that aims to connect and support New Zealanders in the United Kingdom (and those in the UK who have an interest in New Zealand) through social gatherings, events and financial support for Kiwi individuals, businesses and cultural groups. The club has developed into the leading organisation for those in the UK with strong links with Aotearoa New Zealand

Our patron is His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and our vice patron is HE Dr the Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, New Zealand High Commissioner to the United Kingdom The initial aims of the Society were to celebrate what it meant to be a New Zealander in England, and to promote trade between the two countries. These days that means that we host a varied calendar of events each year in recognition of important dates for our NZ community within the UK. For example, in February we hold the annual black tie Waitangi Day Charity Ball and a commemorative Waitangi Day church service at St Lawrence Jewry, with a reception hosted by the Worshipful Company of Girdlers afterwards. As well as dinners, museum and cultural visits and the annual ANZAC Day reception at New Zealand House.. At the Charity Ball, together with Air New Zealand, we award one person as the Air New Zealand UK New Zealander of the Year, for recognition of outstanding contributions towards promoting the interests of New Zealand or New Zealanders in the UK. At most of our events throughout the year we run we fundraise for the NZ Society (UK) Charitable Fund, from which we then award grants to individuals and organisations who seek to strengthen, broaden and deepen the communities and relationships between New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The New Zealand Society (UK) Charitable Fund was set up in order to foster links and cultural exchange between New Zealanders and the UK. We work mainly with individuals and organisations who contribute in the areas of the arts, education, cultural heritage and sport.

16

New Zealand curator and cataloguer Susan Harris has been researching and cataloguing some 19th century photographic albums in depth, identifying many of the sitters, and will be showing interesting range of prints by contemporary artists in New Zealand, as well as posters charting various angles of trade, advertising and colonial history between Britain and New Zealand, as well as 19th century topographical watercolours. The afternoon will also be conducted by the esteemed curator of Prints Zorian Clayton Coffee, tea or a glass of wine afterwards included. Lunch at the Member's Room can be purchased at own cost. An event not to miss!

Membership to the New Zealand Society stars from ÂŁ15 per year and include many benefits, including discounts at Kiwi Businesses through our Loyal Kiwi Card scheme. For more information about the society please visit www.nzsociety.co.uk We are always delighted to hear from potential new members, Committee Members, Loyal Kiwi Card partners and event attendees - info@nzsociety.co.uk The Honourable Clarence Tan The President president@nzsociety.co.uk

The Air New Zealand Waitangi Day 18:30pm on Friday 7th February 2020 Waldorf Hilton on Aldwych, Central London The New Zealand Society would like to welcome you to an evening celebrating New Zealand in England, with the announcement of the winner of the UK New Zealander of the Year Award 2020, once again proudly sponsored by Air New Zealand, being amongst the highlights. The Air New Zealand Waitaing Day Ball 2020 is upon us on the 7th February 2020 An evening of incredible significance for New Zealand and the New Zealand community in the UK. Through this event we raise money and are able to support our New Zealand community here in the UK through our Charitable Grant scheme. The evening includes a champagne reception, traditional Maori kapa haka, a three course NZ dinner, free flowing New Zealand wines, speeches and the evening is filled with great music by New Zealand artists Jayson Norris and Owain Pennington. It is a fun evening but also a significant one as we celebrate and commemorate 180 years since the Treaty of Waitangi and the modern state of New Zealand.

Furthermore, our High Commissioner HE The Right Honourable Lt General Sir Jerry Mateparae will be leaving in April as this will be his final ball.

With especially important New Zealand food, wine and beer, distinguished guests and a night filled with celebratory performances and dancing until late, it will be a wonderful and sold out evening.

Tickets are on sale and start at ÂŁ160 for under 35 members with discounts for tables of 10. Tickets are available now by emailing treasurer@nzsociety.co.uk and requesting an invoice or visit our website www.nzsociety.co.uk The Honourable Clarence Tan The President president@nzsociety.co.uk

Model & Footballer Jaiyah.T.Saelua What is your current profession? I like to call myself an entrepreneur. Job titles are a thing of the past. People are realizing their potentials and are capitalizing on the opportunities to do things that make them happy. That is me. When FIFA needs me, I help. When international nonprofit organizations need me, I help. When the Football Federation of American Samoa needs, me I help. When the documentary needs me, I help. So, basically, I do a lot of things. The important thing is, they are all things that make me happy.

A

merican Samoan Footballer Jaiyah is renowned for her staring role in a Documentary Next Goal Wins. This is a 2014 British documentary film directed by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. The film chronicles the national football team of American Samoa as they try to recover from the indignity of being known as one of the weakest football teams in the world, and to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Let’s explore Jaiyah journey since 2014 and where she is at in 2020.

How was the LPFW Season 20 experience for you? Roberta Laumoli is my cousin. I grew up appreciating her talents as a designer. When she got invited to showcase some of her work at LPFW, I immediately jumped on the opportunity to be a part of her experience. For me, personally, it was a beautiful celebration of modern interpretation of Pacific Island wear. I loved everything about it. There is an unexplainable essence that Pacific people have when it comes to sharing their pride in their identities through their talents, and this event provides a platform for that talent to he shared with the world. It’ll be interesting to see how this platform grows.

Please introduce yourself to our Pacific Audience?

Talofa lava, my name is Jaiyah T. Saelua. I was born & raised in Tutuila, American Samoa. I love football, fashion & Pacific culture. I am a proud member of the Samoan fa’afafine community, and best known as the world’s first out transgender to compete in a FIFA-sanctioned tournament — the 2011 Oceania FIFA World Cup Brazil Qualifications. I was highlighted in an award-winning documentary about the American Samoa National Soccer Team, called “Next Goal Wins”. I have used my platform to advocate around the world for the inclusion of transgender athletes in football. My most notable work to date is helping the England Football Association create, solidify & publish a policy on transgender inclusion in football. I am a member of the FIFA “11 For Diversity” — a jury that is comprised of 11 renowned figures in international football who have contributed to making FIFA more diverse & who choose the annual winner of the FIFA Diversity Award. I was featured on the cover of the 2016 September issue of FIFA 1904 Magazine. I continue to travel in hopes of making the world more trans-friendly through my intersectional advocacy work.

How was the London journey for you?

London isn’t a new destination for me. I’ve traveled to London before for football & for the documentary, but never for fashion. It is a completely different world from that of which I am accustomed too, but such a wonderful experience nonetheless. What do you think of Pacific Fashion & Styles? As a Pacific Islander, I may be biased in saying Pacific Fashion produces some of the most beautiful work in the world. In all honesty, I have a soft spot for indigenous fashion all around the world, especially when natural materials are used — feathers, banyan leaves, coconut material, shells, etc. I also love tapa patterns & how modern artists are incorporating them into their work.

How has Fashion and Style changed in the American Samoa since the late 90’s?

I think new & upcoming designers are becoming more bold in their efforts to modernize Pacific fashion. It’s so important to maintain our cultural identities, but it’s equally as important to progress with the times. Fashion has always challenged the norm, so to see it challenged in the fashion & art world by Pacific people is expressive of the fashion world’s progressive appreciation for Pacific art. I’m all for it, so long as Pacific people are doing it themselves. Tell us about your recent Hollywood STAR role experience with the movie ‘Next Goal Wins’?

I’m not in the Hollywood remake of the documentary (which adapted the same name — “Next Goal Wins”), but I do visit the set sometimes. I have no direct influence or role in the remake, but I have very much enjoyed being a part of the “Next Goal Wins” family. I made a new friend in the girl that is portraying me in the film, and I’ve grown to appreciate the simple fact that this Hollywood remake is going to introduce my story to a wider audience than the documentary has. With a documentary currently produced how has this changed your routine?

The documentary has given me so many opportunities, essentially giving me a platform by exposing my story in relation to my culture, people & team, and in turn giving me an opportunity to be an advocate for LGBTQI+ inclusion in sport. I went from simply being an international football player for my country, to being a star of a documentary, an advocate for transgender inclusion, an inspiration for trans youth around the world, and a Pacific icon of some sort. Do you run SIVA workshops overseas? I do not. I do, though, have a side-passion for dance, especially Pacific dance. I studied the performing arts with a dance focus at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, so I think it’s safe to say I’m pretty good at dancing [insert laughing emoji].

What can you share about your role as one of Top Polynesian Actresses? I don’t see myself as an “actress”. The documentary was real life, so none of it was acting. Although, the editing did make it seem more like a feature film than a documentary. The actress to look out for is Kaimana, who is a talented up-and-coming actress who is portraying me in the Hollywood remake of Next Goal Wins.

Tapestry Arts — Fabric Construction & Social Inclusion

My art medium, is merging together textiles that are native to the African and Polynesian diasporas, which I hand stitch and machine sew, into tapestries that highlight and depict my upbringing in San Francisco. At the tail end of 2018, I began working on a Tapestry series which uses various symbolisms to articulate quite complex stories about gender, politics, colonialisms and modernisms. This involves the creation of woven pieces which use Samoan or African cloth as a base material and various traditional Polynesian artefacts and other efemera are placed to add meaning and texture.

The Three Wise Women (2019): Dimensions: 44.25" x 63.25"

What inspires you to continue on the Fashion Industry in the Pacific? I live in NZ and work with many Pacific Island clients. Working with those clients and developing certain looks help inspire. My recent client i have working with is Miss Niue Aotearoa contestant, Flora Pihigia Halanetau. 6. What are your thoughts on the Fashion Industry in the Pacific? As a pacific island designer, we have a lot to offer to this industry. Our whole culture is based around being creative. Our garment history is a sure sign of fabric development. From weaving coconut flax branches to the beating of tree branches to make fabrics. Also fabric block printing and seashell jewellery. Do you run any Fashion Workshops for teens in your community? Not currently, but that can be a possible venture to pursue in the near future. What is Niue Fashion Style For all the occasions i have been to growing up, one thing has always stood out for me and that is our Niuean people have always taken pride in how they dress up to a special gathering. The women and young ladies dress in their best dress, bold coloured fabrics with printed patterns. Always dressed up with one or more statement pieces, a weaved bag with embroidered flowers with family initials adorned on it, flower headpieces they had weaved at a women's weaving group, a frangipani flower placed behind their ear bought from the market or a shelled necklace that had been collected and clean and strung up by a grandparent which has been passed down. You have recently launched your collection for Plus Sizes what's next? What's next for Saint Fina, will be to grow the business from home for the next 12 months and then to open a shop. The response from launching Saint Fina has been very encouraging.

What opp. are there for anyone wanting to study at WAES? We at WAES are committed to everyone having “ a have a go attitude”. Students can stay on a makeup course and start a journey that may split and they end up working instead towards floristry. It’s a journey that allows you to find your skill set through experimentation. Our learners are from 19 onwards and really committed to moving mountains to start a career. Everyone is welcome. Are there other courses available apart from Hair/Make UP? We have a lot of creative courses available such as floristry, fashion ceramics and arts. We also scaffold these courses with business maths and English. Where do you get your inspiration from?

My influences and inspiration comes from the world around me. I feel life not necessarily see it in a purely one dimensional sense. The way things look in colour or how a feather or texture feels on your fingers as it brushes against your hair. The way colours lift and create a halo of shadow, light and tone across skin as it absorbs that light, whether it’s in a object of art or person as they enter a room. All the small elements that make up our world that then fit together in a jigsaw puzzle that is a wonderful new perception. Those are my influences. What next for you in the LPFW scene? I would like to see our students grow with the program and see them be the next designers of the future. Gemma is one of these learners who started with me three years ago and has had a supersonic journey with us getting through to the finals of WELLA exposure then onto the design team for the London Pacific fashion week. I want more of this for other learners. My role is now as a facilitator or guru, who inspires others to achieve and make their journey with all that’s we can support along the way.
