CANDID
by Foa’i by Olivia Olivia Foa’i O And now I've just released my debut album "Candid" and I'm very excited to share it with the world.
How long have you been singing? Professionally, I started singing on stage with Te Vaka at age 13. What is your new album called? It's called " Candid" because it's honest, it's me with all my mixed musical influences and it encapsulates the thoughts and feelings which are most important to me at this moment in time. How have you progressed as a Solo Artist after the Movie 'Moana'? I'm working on it! It's definitely very early stages for me, having only just released my first ever solo album, but I'm having fun and I'm very excited for the future.
Miss Olivia Foa’i Singer|Artist|Choreographer|Dancer|Song Write|Model
W
ith all her music tours accompanying her parents around the globe as one of the lead singers to the famous award winning band Te Vaka, one must ask the question as to what’s next for our Singer/Artist/Dancer/Choreographer/Song Writer/Model Miss Olivia Foa’i. I am happy to share her journey with you as she is featured on our first issue of the LPFW Runway Magazine Cover. Let’s find out more from Olivia and hear about her first solo album ‘CANDID’. Can you share your musical journey with our Pacific audience? My musical journey started when I was 2 years old. My parents Opetaia and Julie Foa'i were touring their band "Te Vaka" around Europe and had taken my siblings and I with them. I was enchanted by the show so I snuck on stage and started dancing.
From there it was hard to keep me off. I got my first proper choreographed dance routine in the show at age 6, then started singing in the band as well when I was 13. I guess the next milestone in my career was singing in Disney's "Moana" movie. I'm the first voice you hear in the film, over the opening animation ("Tulou Tagaloa"). And you can find my voice in some other tracks too like "Logo Te Pate" and "Know Who You Are", all songs written by my dad, Opetaia Foa'i. I've been writing my own songs forever, but it wasn't until last year that I released my first 2 original singles as a solo artist: An R&B track "City Got Your Name on it" and a Pop bilingual Tokelauan-English track, "My Way ft. Matatia Foa'i".
4
Are you still singing with TEVAKA? Yes, Te Vaka is my family, I toured with the band just last July. Although we're not touring as regularly as we used to, I'll always be there when they call. Will you be touring Europe any time in the near future? Not that is planned yet! But I really hope to put a show on the road soon as possible. Do you choreograph all your dance routines? Yes, everything 'Contemporary Polynesian' style I perform in my dance videos or music videos, I choreograph. When I do other more main stream styles (like hip hop) - I usually have help. Who is your fav. Pacific Fashion Designer? Failepou of Lepou designs is one of my favourite designers to work with. She is crazy skilful, so dedicated and has made some amazing outfits for me from the Moana Premiere in Hollywood, to the NZ Music Awards, to the Lakalaka music video - she's amazing.
How can we purchase a copy of your new album? It's available in digital form only, so all of the main streaming/download platforms: Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes etc. What are your social media handles? Insta @oliviafoai Facebook @oliviafoai

elebrating life and culture with an exotic flavour and flamboyant colour palette. Australian born artist Tania Wursig is of European Heritage and based in both Sydney and Tahiti.
Meet Tania, a figurative painter and her work is predominantly imbued with strong cultural influences that span from the Gypsy caves of Granada, as seen in earlier works, to the islands of Polynesia, specifically Tahiti.
artists work depicts the various aspects and aesthetics of culture which revolve around the expression of authentic traditions. A graduate of Sydney College of the Arts, majoring in fashion and textile design, Wursig experiments with the textural possibilities of painting on collaged surfaces of textiles, Tahitian Pareu, coconut husk, postcards and various ephemera collected on her travels. These grounds add narrative to the paintings connecting the subjects with culture and place.
A dominant theme in Wursig’s work is the expression of ‘tradition’ and connection with the land. Often depicting her subjects laden with elements of nature, flowers, and fruit or in lush fertile surrounds with their gaze fixed directly upon the viewer. ‘Reversing the gaze’, is a device this artist likes to use to empower her subjects and challenge the viewer. Inspired by her exposure to the Tahitian people and their islands, this
“I am very passionate about ‘we’ as a human race reconnecting with our earth, Polynesian cultures still carry a strong presence of a connection with the land and their cultural traditions. This is what attracts me.” said Tania. Can you introduce us to the theme of your latest exhibition? The exhibition is entitled ‘Endangered’ - the theme is an exploration of the survival of Tahitian/Polynesian culture.

Trois Graces Tahitiennes Artist @Tania Wursig
Ame Dela Polynesia Artist @Tania Wursig
What inspired you to work towards this theme? Living in a world where the term 'Endangered' has sadly become all too familiar. Our habitat is endangered, the oceans are under threat and many species are facing extinction. We too as a species have become 'Endangered', not in numbers, but in our essence. I feel the greatest threat to humanity is loss of culture, tradition and our connection with the earth. Something that is still very present in the world's remaining indigenous cultures. It is perhaps this 'loss' of connection that has created the 'Endangered' world we live in today. With this exhibition I have placed my focus on the Tahitian culture, people and a way of life that has long been under threat.
gallery as such, i have a studio which I open once a year or clients can visit by appointment. My studio is located in the busy inner west Sydney suburb of Rozelle, just 5 minutes from the city.
How many times do you run your workshops in a year? I run my art retreats ‘Painting in Paradise’ 2 - 3 times a year in April, July and September. These retreats are designed for people with a creative bent who want to experience Tahiti from a creative perspective. I welcome people from around the world, with skills ranging from absolute beginners to intermediate exploring the Tahitian islands of Bora Bora, Huahine, Mo’orea.
Tell us about your biggest commission at Bondi Beach and how it came about? This was not a commission. It is a project organised by the Bondi Beach council to give local artists exposure to an international audience. It is granted upon application and the murals are rotated every 6 months, however mine has now been up for 2 years, which is quite an honour. Do you have any plans to run a workshop in Paris given the relationship between French Polynesia and France? I have been discussing plans with my travel partners to offer workshops in the South of France perhaps beginning in 2022. Are you ready to start printing your work onto fabric and transforming that into a Fashion Collection? I have a background in Fashion and textiles and have in the past created small collections of fabrics using my artwork. However I am only 1 person and it is difficult to juggle the time to paint have regular exhibitions and conduct my art retreats as well as creating textiles. So I have placed that on the back burner for the moment.
“THESE RETREATS ARE DESIGNED WITH A BALANCE IN MIND. ENCOURAGEMENT OF CREATIVE THINKING, CULTURAL EXPLORATION, RELAXATION, AND REJUVENATION.” How often do you travel to Tahiti for your shows? I go to Tahiti 3 times a year, to gather inspiration for my paintings, conduct my art retreats, and open my annual exhibition. I have 1 exhibition per year at Galerie Winkler in the heart of Papeete during the months of September and October. Where is your Arts gallery based in Australia? I do not have an art

change is a security issue because it is an immediate threat to the survival of Pacific peoples and states. Most countries represented by the fashion designers are small and are vulnerable to climate change as well as to ocean destruction. There is a psychological aspect to fashion. I am sure fashion designers know how fashion can have power over our health and self-worth and for that matter, productivity at the workplace. When you know you are “well dressed” (in context), you are steady and the day is pleasant. If you know or see or feel that you are not, you can be crushed for the whole day and even the day after. I join Ms Ana Lavekau in welcoming the OPENING SPEECH BY Pacific fashion designers from Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Guam, Hawaii, NZ, HER EXCELLENCY KUNDU LONDON PNG, and Tonga. You are clearly at the top of your craft and have great courage to take on London. It is that drive and curiosity to explore the unknown, to test PAPUA NEW GUINEA HIGH COMMISSIONER ideas to improve, to create, to take risks, that lead to innovation and this is the MS WINNIE A KIAP age of innovation. So I salute you all and wish you all the very best this evening. I also salute Ana Lavekau who conceptualised the possibility of bringing creative artists from the Pacific and establishing the Pacific London Fashion Week in the margins of the London Fashion Week. This is its ninth year and the number of participating designers and countries are increasing each year. So that is success considering the tyranny of distance and considering that for some of the designers here, the fashion industry is still in its infancy.

There was lots of hard work involved preparing the extended collection over the last few months, and just before we left, we had whanau (family) come over to bless the collection and our travels giving thanks to our Atua (Gods) Tipuna (ancestors). We flew Air NZ on the 7th September to Los Angeles knowing we had a 13hour flight with a four hour stopover in LAX and 10 hour flight to the UK arriving on Sunday 8th September. This gave us a few days to acclimatise and stretch the legs with some important sightseeing before the days building up to the LPFW events. Fashion Photographer Tim Copsey Where do you see Pacific Fashion growth in the next five years? I think all fashion will need to have very strong and genuine credibility in terms of sustainability and being planet friendly. If consumers habits start to move slowly from consuming fast fashion to paying more for something that will be a classic piece in their wardrobe, then I think the emphasis will be on strong design and quality that's built to last. From what i have seen of Pacific fashion designers have an opportunity to excel in those aspects. What advice would you give to young budding photographer? Any photographer the key skill is to develop your eye. If you shoot, shoot then shoot some more, you will start to notice more details, shape, light, shade, colour, tone etc in the world around you. If you want to improve as a fashion photographer learn to prioritize the subject, light, composition, the dynamic energy between you and the model wearing the fashion. These things are far more important than the camera equipment. Who is your fav. Pacific designer? I am not able to choose a favourite Pacific designer as I like different aspects of different designers work. I do always admire most the ones that fully seize the opportunities that LPFW provides to showcase their clothes. Who is your fav. Pacific Model? I don't have favourite Pacific models as LPFW always has models that show the clothes well. With regard to all models the ones that I enjoy photographing the most are the ones that give that extra x factor when posing or on the runway of a show or photography.
T
Fashion Photographer Tim Copsey
ime and time again; you get introduced to a Fashion Photographer who completely understands your journey and vision. I met Tim Copsey in 2015 as I was preparing to produce my First LPFW Collective. I couldn’t contain my excitement as I was pleased to hear that Tim wanted to capture some backstage shots of our collective show featuring 5 LPFW designers. Shona Tawhiao, Jeanine Clarkin, Louina Fifita were my three New Zealand Fashion Designers that were part of the collective including Missing Polynesia from Hawaii. Fast forward to 2019 and needless to say; Tim and I have been collaborating since. I dedicate my first LPFW Runway Magazine issue to some of his amazing work from the many LPFW shows we have worked on. Let us find out more about Tim’s LPFW journey. Can you please introduce yourself to our Pacific Fashion audience? I am a fashion photographer who generally operates in London. When did you first start working with LPFW? I first started working with LPFW in Sept 2015 when Ana reached out to me. Little did I know that it would be the beginning of such a long and fruitful relationship. When you see what Ana has done to put Pacific fashion on the London map, you are filled with admiration. What is your fav. show? I really can not pick out one particular collection or show as a favourite, however I will say this...the venues for the shows always have something of interest about them. As a photographer this often gives me an opportunity to capture models showing off the clothes to good effect in great surroundings. What do you think of Pacific fashion? Well before LPFW I was not very aware of Pacific fashion or even the geography of that part of the world. That has changed over time after taking hundreds of photos at LPFW and at editorial shoots for LPFW. I like the way so many of the designers incorporate the heritage of their people in the fabrics and design of the clothes. I like the variety of styles from very artistic ethnic couture pieces to ready to wear type fashion. How many of your work have been published? I honestly stopped keeping count some years back. It is always a thrill for me to see my work in publications, be that print or online. Being a working fashion photographer my time is split between producing images for different clients then when time/opportunity permits its is good to shoot an editorial for a magazine.

Guma’ Ge’la Guahan Designers & Models @LPFW Media Launch, LPFW, September 13, NZ House, London.
I was first introduced to Clay at the London
Pacific Fashion Week Media launch hosted at the Rooftop of New Zealand House, London on the morning of the 12th September, 2019. Clay was accompanied by his fellow STAR Creatives Guma' Ge'laGuahan representing GUAM and opening the Oceania Collection at the 5pm show hosted at the Meston Suite, Royal Horse Guards Hotel, Whitehall, London on the 13th September, 2019. Håfa adai!
My name is Clay Joshua Aflleje. I was born & raised on
Guåhan in the village of Tamuning. During my time on Island I had the great opportunity & pleasure of working alongside other very talented local artists as a makeup artist working on photo shoots, pageants, weddings as well as fashion shows. Most recently,
I had the opportunity to represent my island as the
makeup artist for Guma’ Ge’la at London Pacific Fashion Week 2019. Through the art of makeup. I hope to sew seeds of self love &
confidence by enhancing unique natural features of the face & inspiring the wearer to impose their beauty onto the world. My goal for the makeup in this project is to use colours & textures indicative of the pacific while complimenting the pieces & adding to the allure of Pacific Fashion. My inspiration for my style & way of being is my grandmother, a woman who not only cultivated her land but her style as well.
Her spirit
lives on in my approach to makeup and how I navigate my life as modern CHamoru man.
