1 STUDIO - PROVIDENCE CENTER RISD
The site for this studio project is the Providence Center, an institution that helps low income and homeless people who suffer of mental illness and/or addiction. The Providence Center ends up being not only a treatment center, they also provide housing, education, pharmacy and other services that their clients may need. Because of this an extensive analysis of their programme and transit was made in order to make a proposal for their waiting areas. The main inspiration for this waiting area is a shelter, having walls and a roof above one’s head gives a sense of belonging and comfort. The shelter is composed of three elements: the roof, a rotating pod (which seconds as a bookshelf), and a pull-down bench system. This system is weaved into the building by making use of the already existing structural columns and allowing the pods to rotate around them.
2 Autism Classroom RISD
Anthony Carnevale elementary school
After winning the 2015 INTAR Charette competition, which consisted on designing an Autism Classroom for Anthony Carnevale Elementary School, a team of five students got together to produce these nine pieces. One of the biggest challenges was in the fine line that stands between specializing an object for an autistic child and helping in the mission of mainstreaming them with the goal of incorporating them into a standard class. We developed these pieces with that in mind, they can interact with standard furniture and be incorporated into standard rooms. Special attention was made to the sensory aspect of the project, from the color palette to texture . We designed and laser cut a pattern on fire-resistant fabric which then served as doors to the pieces. This allows visibility into the shelf but also serves as a physical barrier for when temper tantrums kick in. The closing mechanism for these is velcro in order to work fine motor skills. A magnetic white board piece was designed in order to hold work bins and provide these tools for the teacher. This piece also has an interchangeable surface, in this image felt is shown for story telling.
In order to assist teachers to control the order of the classroom, our team created the “Ball Cove”. They were designed around a 20” yoga ball and work to increase the student’s focus and release pent-up energy through the therapeutic bouncing experience. While bouncing on their seat, the furniture provides both vestibular and proprioception stimulation to the children, drastically promoting their attention span. Moreover, the piece can be rotated to become a play object and then again an armchair. The Ball Cove is made with 3/4” plywood and has a concave upholstered interior creating a safe and comfortable place for play.

Good As Gold _ Roasting Room
LOCATION Worcester, Massachusetts CLIENT Good As Gold Coffee
RESPONSABILITY Design, Project Management, inspection
Good As Gold recently acquired a new type of technology, the air roaster. This machine roasts the coffee bean by means of air, providing a more equal and even roast than the traditional way. It also can be worked with a computer, meaning that any perfected recipe can be saved and duplicated for their clients. The roasting room will host a smaller version of the air roaster, it will be a place where they can take their clients, go through a selection of green coffee, make their blends and ultimately taste and cup the end product. This project is currently under construction

The Escazu Corporate Center offers a great option for offices in this growing area of Costa Rica. It is strategically located across the street from Multiplaza mall, another one of Grupo Roble’s projects, making these complementary. The building consists of six floors for office space and four for parking. Even though I worked on the development of the building’s public spaces, it was the lobby that my focus was turned to. To create a Costarican, high excecutive welcoming space was my challenge.

“The Market Restaurant
The main restaurant at HRI used to be called Azulejos, it was decided to change that concept completely after almost twenty years. The new restaurant is The Market, the idea is for each person to be able to custom make their own plate by choosing their ingredients, very much like a market. The concept calls for an open kitchen.
