1 STUDIO - PROVIDENCE CENTER The site for this studio project is the Providence Center, an institution that helps low income and homeless people who suffer of mental illness and/ or addiction. The Providence Center ends up being not only a treatment center, they also provide housing, education, pharmacy and other services that their clients may need. Because of this an extensive analysis of their programme and transit was made in order to make a proposal for their waiting areas. The main inspiration for this waiting area is a shelter, having walls and a roof above one’s head gives a sense of belonging and comfort. The shelter is composed of three elements: the roof, a rotating pod (which seconds as a bookshelf), and a pull-down bench system. This system is weaved into the building by making use of the already existing structural columns and allowing the pods to rotate around them.

2 Autism Classroom
Anthony Carnevale elementary school
By providing the opportunity to change and manipulate furniture, layout and surfaces for both teachers and students, we can achieve a variety of learning environments that satisfy different needs. This flexibility can be worked with a strategy of preparing the children for a mainstream education. Throuhout the space we are utilizing sensnory as a teaching tool. Our approach is to push most of the storage to one wall, which enables the layout to be adaptable. In this wall we find a Sensory panel, where children can be stimulated and comforted. Next to it there is a pod, that can be used as a reading area and as a teaching tool where the teacher can place a table in front and the child can be learning in a more private space. The size of this pod is designed to house two to three children sitting together at a time, so as to strengthen their social skills rather than have individual pods. The workbin storage has been gathered and anchored safely within this wall, creating the sense of a workbin storage zone. By incorporating the Sensory room to the wall we are enhancing the privacy aspect while reducing the blind spot of the existing condition. By making this a bigger space we allow for a more interactive environment. We propose a more sustainable and economical solution, so we have adapted the existing furniture to fit into this new scheme, providing a dynamic teaching space and also creating more storage.

2 Autism Classroom
Anthony Carnevale elementary school
After winning the 2015 INTAR Charette competition, which consisted on designing an Autism Classroom for Anthony Carnevale Elementary School, a team of five students got together to produce these nine pieces. One of the biggest challenges was in the fine line that stands between specializing an object for an autistic child and helping in the mission of mainstreaming them with the goal of incorporating them into a standard class. We developed these pieces with that in mind, they can interact with standard furniture and be incorporated into standard rooms. Special attention was made to the sensory aspect of the project, from the color palette to texture . We designed and laser cut a pattern on fire-resistant fabric which then served as doors to the pieces. This allows visibility into the shelf but also serves as a physical barrier for when temper tantrums kick in, as the teachers say, “out of sight, out of mind!. The closing mechanism for these is velcro in order to work fine motor skills. A magnetic white board piece was designed in order to hold work bins and provide these tools for the teacher. This piece also has an interchangeable surface, in this image felt is shown for story telling. Color Palette

Autism Classroom - Table Cabinets
The Table Cabines are two pieces of adapively-reused furniture made from existing pieces in the classroom. We decide to take off the table legs from the tables and add cabinets underneath them for more efficient use of space. This idea not only increases the storage volume of the classroom but also allows teachers to reposition the tables instantly by way of the new wheeling system. The sliding doors of the cabinets are attached with perforated “sunbrella fabric; an easy to clean, tear resistant synthetic fabric. The simple laser cut pattern gives translucency and lightness, while allowing the user a level of expediency when looking for specific materials inside the numerous cabinets. There are two different kinds of table cabinets. One is 8.5 inches wide and the other is roughtly 17 inches wide. The size of two pieces of furniture are designed to fit different educational materials in the classroom.

Autism Classroom - Wall Shelves
The shelving additions greatly increase storage space in the class room and keep unnecessary clutter out of sight and out of mind. This creates a much less distracting environment to work in. the lower shelves are for student use and the upper ones are for teacher storage. Hence the bottom has Velcro for fine motor development while the top has magnets for easy safe loading of more restricted items. The precision laser cut fabric allows students to access the materials with little to no barrier while simultaneously keeping un used materials out of view. With the time budget constraints facing the designers, it was crucial that all the design ideas be additions or adaptation mods to the classroom-- avoiding demolition and on-site construction at all costs. As such the wall pieces are hung off of a simple system of cleats, that allow for easy de-installation, modification, replacements and above all, non-disruptive design intervention. The storage wall features two removable drawers to allow radiator access. All the furniture is precision laser cut and assembled with finger joinery. this makes it incredibly resilient and durable.

Autism Classroom - Ball Cove
In order to assist teachers to control the order of the classroom, our team created the “Ball Cove”. They were designed around a 20” yoga ball and work to increase the student’s focus and release pent-up energy through the therapeutic bouncing experience. While bouncing on their seat, the furniture provides both vestibular and proprioception stimulation to the children, drastically promoting their attention span. Moreover, the piece can be rotated to become a play object and then again an armchair. The Ball Cove is made with 3/4” plywood and has a concave upholstered interior creating a safe and comfortable place for play. There are many ways to utilize the Coves besides its primary function as a desk. Teachers can also flip it and use it as an armchair for story time. The two Coves can connect together in a tunnel shape, becoming a wonderuful piece for students to interact with and explore. The Ball Coves have the same height as the tables in the classroom, so they can be bonded with them during group activity.

RESPONSABILITY Design, Project Management, inspection Good As Gold recently acquired a new type of technology, the air roaster. This machine roasts the coffee bean by means of air, providing a more equal and even roast than the traditional way. It also can be worked with a computer, meaning that any perfected recipe can be saved and duplicated for their clients. The roasting room will host a smaller version of the air roaster, it will be a place where they can take their clients, go through a selection of green coffee, make their blends and ultimately taste and cup the end product. The Escazu Corporate Center offers a great option for offices in this growing area of Costa Rica. It is strategically located across the street from Multiplaza mall, another one of Grupo Roble’s projects, making these complementary. The building consists of six floors for office space and four for parking. Even though I worked on the development of the building’s public spaces, it was the lobby that my focus was turned to. To create a Costarican, high excecutive welcoming space was my challenge.

With this expansion project the goal was not only to create more retail space and have a better transit flow throughout the mall, but to also solve a critical parking problem. The expansion results in the creation of 1,100 parking spaces and a new wing which contains over twenty retail spaces, including one main department store and two mini-anchors.

“The Market” Restaurant
The main restaurant at HRI used to be called Azulejos, it was decided to change that concept completely after almost twenty years. The new restaurant is The Market, the idea is for each person to be able to custom make their own plate by choosing their ingredients, very much like a market. The concept calls for an open kitchen.
