WA L L O F C L A R I T Y The star t of any museum visit sets the tone for the visitors experience. In the Boijmans van Beuningen, the entrance area gives the visitor a sense of confusion. Different functions and objects (ticket desk, cloakroom, shop) are scattered around in an ill-defined space. In our inter vention, some existing par titions have been removed in order to create a continuous exhibition area for sculptures from the cour tyard all the way through to the ticket desk. By doing so, the logistics of purchasing a ticket and hanging up coats are delayed, and the visitor becomes immersed in ar t from the beginning. We obser ved there to be multiple layers in the exhibition room, and decided that our strategy was to modify the series of layers. Each row of columns (a layer) has its own role within the exhibition area. To the existing six layers we have added a seventh layer. This layer is a wall on the border between exhibition space and cloakroom. The ticket desk is integrated into this wall, and is slightly emphasized by different textures and colours. Because of these subtle differentiations in texture and colour, the wall still forms quite a uniform backdrop for the ar twork in front of it.

WHEN OLD MEETS NEW Visiting the Boijmans van Beuningen, we encountered many interesting details in the building. The one that intrigued us most was the meeting of a column designed by Robbrecht&Daem with a column designed by Alexander Bodon. The 1:5 fragment we made is a copy of those two columns, and the structural elements on top of them (this fragment is upside down due to technical difficulties). The Bodon column is square and is quite specifically detailed. The sur face is bush hammered, apar t from its smooth and rounded off edges. The beam atop this column is made out of multiple layers of concrete, with some gaps in the top layer. The Robbrecht&Daem column is a stretched rectangle (ratio 1:5) with no detailing at all. The concrete sur face is smooth and of a lighter colour than the Bodon column. The beam on top of it is similar to the column itself. The Robbrecht&Daem column is positioned in front-center of the Bodon column. It almost makes contact with the Bodon column; with only an intimate gap in between. This intimacy strengthens the relationship between the two building par ts The fragment as it exists today (2019) is completely accidental; a wall used to cover both columns until it was torn down in 2008.

The current entrance area of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen gives the visitor a sense of confusion. The placement of furniture and functions are unclear and makes the entrance area difficult to navigate in.

Reorganization of the ground floor entrance area of the museum, which entails ever ything that is currently freely accessible. Considerations - Exposing and immersing ar t to the public. - Clarity of zone, sequence, and routing. - A strong connection between the inside and outside spaces.
