ARGYLE ST. INTERGENERATIONAL CENTRE Year 2 Project 02

Located in a densely populated area in Central London, this project tackles the reuse and recycling of existing typologies of Argyle Street (King’s Cross), shaping an integenerational space where students from Argyle Street Primary School can interact with retired residents of the area.

Unfolded elevation of private apartments

Unfolded elevation of daycare

Split by two common clausters at ground floor, the project is divided into two sections: the semi-public realm where activities between children and the retired take place (mass closest to the school indicated in pink) and the private residences, where each unit is designed around a small private courtyard, a little outdoor space to be enjoyed in a highly populated and limited green space availability in King’s Cross. The private and public sectors of the project are reflected on its envelope. Insitu concrete cast to express the playful massing placements which express the versatility of children’s building blocks and solid slabs of stone for the private residences, which provide a strong and sturdy character that safeguards the vulnerability of the retiredresidents.

ORSMAN ROAD WET TRADE CENTRE Year 3 Project 02

Located in Haggerston, this project aims to bring together semi detached family homes, working studio spaces with connections to flats for studio owners to live in and a Wet Trade Workshop. The project features an interest in contributing to the grammar of the built environment and how we can use design to puzzle together private dwellings and shared spaces. These are studied in order to achieve an architectonic haven with emotional potential while understanding the implications of the construction element and its footprint impact on the heightening crisis of climate change.

The project explores the impact of design and adapts to the needs of the neighbourhood of Orsman Road through a humble approach that wouldn’t jeopardize the Canalside’s sense of community. It celebrates the Wet Trade craft as much as it evolves around translating the skinny courtyard from Project01 (a small study and microcosm to Project 02) into shared cloisters for both public and partly private use to improve living conditions in London’s densely constructed environment.

The project takes on the existing materials and structure to be re-used for the new low risehousing proposal not only to recycle materials and reduce carbon emission but to remember and respect the building that was once engrained into the Canalside’s atmosphere.

Combined with a strong regard for the spatial qualities of a home, the workshop honours the often overlooked process of the wet trade – brickwork, masonry, painting, wall and floor tiling and plaster rendering - as contemporary architecture relies on heavy industrial machines and technological advancements for the production of materials, which often add to the climate issue. The Wet Trade Workshop encourages the learning and understanding of what goes under the conglomerate set of architectural tangible elements that make up a space, an appreciation towards the very basics of architecture and detailing.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Part 1 architectural assistant at YARD Architects Over the course of 2 years, I got the chance to work on small scale private residential projects in London. Exposed to Stages 1-4, I had the perfect opportunity to develop my design skills while learning how these proposals could be achieved in the built environment. As a small practice, during my first year I was mainly responsible for the initial design proposals, visuals and curating presentation documents as well as Design and Access Statements. This has given me the chance to familiarise myself with relevant policies within the different boroughs and conservation areas, learnt how to design according to how people live in detail and understand the impact of our proposals within the vicinity. As my confidence in design grew, during my 2nd year I was given the opportunity to assist at Stage 4, working on detailed drawings, producing schedules for fittings, liaising with clients and suppliers. BLENHEIM GROVE The house forms part of a 5 house custom build shell only development, allowing owners to complete the houses to their own specification. Through the concept of the “upside down living”, we have proposed to flip its original intent by putting the living spaces along the roof terraces, connected by a curved void on the top floor while keeping the bedrooms on the lower ground floor. With a feauture wall which connects all these spaces through the voids from the ground floor to the 2nd floor, we have explored different material options and colour schemes to suit our clients’ desire to live in a home of bold colours.
