AIX MARSEILLE FACULTY OF INTEGRATION OF ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING WINTER 2014 - SPRING 2015
MASTER'S COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN PROJECT
INSTRUCTOR: DR CHARLIE SMITH
The main objective is to introduce the architecture programme to the Aix Marseille University while improving the advance engineering programme. Aix Marseille University is the biggest university in Marseille and it is crucial to establish international connections with a mission to promote the European and international dimension of Aix Marseille University’s teaching and research activities. Collaboration of architecture and engineering by integrating students with the joint/ collaboration project of architecture and engineering students to experience new environment of learning. Calatrava Method (journey of learning)
proposed site
Santiago Calatrava, one of the well known architects; took architecture and engineering to get a thorough understanding in designing a building. He realise in architecture, the golden rule was that buildings had to be stable and stationary while creating a very lightweight-looking construction. He has achieved in how to express movement and change and explore the possibilities of bringing actual movement into architecture. He has experimented in designing new kinds of collapsible doors, windows, and roofs that would move and open up in new ways, altering the shape of the building. For Calatrava, external of appearances are all of the forms of things that captivate our eye while internal of appearances are how these things actually function, their anatomy or composition, the parts working together and forming the whole. By combining the “how” and the “what” of architecture, he gained a much deeper, or rather more rounded knowledge of the field. He inspired to create something infinitely more poetic, to stretch the boundaries, to break the conventions of architecture itself.
MASTERPLAN
Symbiosis The definition from Merriam-Webster dictionary: Symbiosis 1. Biology : the relationship between two different kinds of living things that live together and depend on each other 2. A relationship between two people or groups that work with and depend on each other The faculty of integration of architecture and engineering offers students of architecture and engineering to collaborate to create synergy and understanding in building construction. There was saying; Architecture is a void-emotion Engineering is a solid-fact Therefore, Both are need each others to create a space Decorator Crab Decorator crab is a living organism that attach animal & plants to the surface of their body, where they are allowed to grow. The decorator crab gains a disguise to conceal it from the animals, while the animals and plants gains a mobile home. The decorator crab disguise itself with various-coloured sponges, small sea anemones and green algae. Decorator crab is the perfect example of how the concept of symbiosis will driven the developmental process of the project. The research shows the unique relationship betweeen decorator crab and its 'passengers' will create a synergy motion whereas both are in a win-win situation. Inspired by the uniqueness of the decorator crab, the designer has come out with the idea of implementing the exoskeletal and endoskeletal constructional method.
SITE PLAN
structure The main structure is the rectangular hollow section (RHS) for column and steel I beam to create a lightweight construction while maintain the exoskeleton and endoskeleton construction method.
skin The building is surrounded by the timber louver; LVL (laminated veneer lumber) that cast shades from direct south facing sunlight while allow cold air from the sea to breeze the building.
rainwater collection The rainwater is harvested in underground tank to be use for cooling and heating of the building.
mechanical The building is installed with ground source heat exchange for radiant heating and cooling. Heat recovery air system.
structural core To support the main structures and to hold from mistral wind, a series of consrete shells (fire escape staircases) are built to hold and strengthen the building.
energy The building is installed with active solar photovoltaic panels that 100 percent renewable on site and generate energy to the building.
waste compost The building is aiming to achieve the treatment of 100 percent waste compost on the site by latest technology.
natural ventilation The windows is operable for natural ventilation and night flush for cooling the building in summer.

"It is not possible to make great buildings, or great towns, beautiful places, places where you feel yourself, places where you feel alive, except by following this way. And, as you will see, this way will lead anyone who looks for it to buildings which are themselves as ancient in their form, as the trees and hills, and as our faces are." Christopher Alexander
