PERSONALITY PLEASE..// CALL LANE SOCIAL //

NORTH BAR //

SANTIAGO //

When you first walk into this city centre bar, the exposed brick walls and dimly lit tables create a somber atmosphere – however – take a quick trip up the flight of stairs and be surprised to notice you WILL soon be mingling in Hawaii. Leeds’ only tiki bar has puffer fish lanterns, bamboo seating and giant glass cocktail bowls nicknamed ‘zombie heads’. It exclusively plays classics by the ‘Beach Boys’ and ‘Bob Marley’ which set the relaxed and lassiezfaire tone for the evening. The bartenders perform fire blowing with the desired rum OF Wray and Nephew and twist ‘n’ shake in their Hawaiian shirts. For a fun and alternative night out, a visit should definitely be own your sunshine cards.

This quaint craft beer bar is part of a chain that really adore their beers. It attracts a hip group of customers and for sure IT IS a destination where you are boUnd to get a lesson in not only the draft and bottled beer they have in stock but the staff are well adept at how all the beer is brewed and what brewery and brewimg style you would prefer. It is laid out in a ‘cafelike’ way that gives it a kind of European feel with graphic design pieces plastered on the walls and wooden benches to drink at. The prices are reasonable and most certainly reflect the drinks themselves; however if you are looking for a wide variety of other spirits this bar will most likely fall shoRt. but overall a great little find!

A bar that is not for the weak hearted - if you are a fan of whiskey, rock and leather jackets, then this place is well and truly your haven. The room is as darkly lit as the Jack Daniels ripped shirts all the bartenders have thrown on their TATTOOED backs, but do not be fooled by their APPEARENCES – these guys really do know the difference between a fine whiskey and subtle bourbon and at a good price too. The upstairs performance room IS RESERVED for live heavy rock bands THAT add authenticity to the genre, but be prepared with earplugs – it can get exceptionally loud! Even though this night out isn’t for everyone, IT undoubtedly is a character filled fun night out, that is hard to be contested with.

ANON NATION OF SHOPKEEPERS //

This open plan bar and restaurant has an art house theme which not only serves mouth wateringly delicious American-style food but a fine art theme. This is because it is a cider flavored Hipster hang-out, that naturally provides a layout peppered with vintage furniture and a back wall projection of film clips by local artists. Of an evening, Nations’ stage becomes home to live bands that provide a very energetic night of music and crowd surfing that can be watched from the bar but also within the cobbled courtyard that is complete with heated picnic tables. Overall this is an arty and all-embracing evening of live music and affordable drinks. (FEATURED BELOW)

NIGHTLIFE

NEON CACTUS // During the day this Mexican eat out provides some of the city’s best burrito’s; at night it converts into a very scene and electro filled bar with in-house DJ’s playing some of the best upbeat tunes around. With the back bar not only filled with hundreds of tequillas but also of hot sauces from over the world. The Mexican theme is evident and even continues down into the miniscule titled tequila bar in the basement. This Mexican night out is one of the liveliest places, located on the busiest street in Leeds – so be aware that even though this is a great bar it will get busy extremely quickly and so it is most certainly not for the claustrophobic!

INTERVIEW WITH NORTHERN BARTENDER OF THE YEAR 2012..// Northern Bartender of 2012 James Pope is currently shaking and stirring in indie bar Verve on Merrion St. He spoke to us for this month’s Anon Magazine about the perks of such a title and tips on how to make summer tropical themed cocktails for the summer months ahead. Q – James, talk us through how you achieved such an acclaim. A – Well I competed whilst I was still at university in Newcastle and it was definitely something that I worked towards and very hard at to achieve, but I had an enormous amount of fun whilst doing it. So it was most definitely worth a go and somehow got the title out of it! (laughs) So all round, a success for sure.

5

NIGHTLIFE

Q – So did you move from Newcastle to Leeds to bartend? A- Yeah pretty much, after I graduated I wanted to explore another city and what cocktail making opportunities I could have. In Newcastle I worked for an enthusiastic cocktail bar called Tokyo but when I got ‘Northern Bartender’ I met lots of people in the industry and got offered this great opportunity to bar-tend at Verve. I took it because Leeds is a city filled with great bars and people here seem to care more about the process of making cocktails and not just the final product. Here I feel I could become even more creative with my drinks and have so much fun doing so. Q – As an experienced bartender, talk us through what makes a good night-out in Leeds? A- (laughs) It obviously helps that I know a lot of other bar staff for cheaper drinks! But I always tend

to go for the more tasty and yummier drinks such as an Espresso Martini? My latest tropical creation is something which I call ‘Pieces of Eight’; its absolutely delicious and great to share with a mate or two! James’ ‘Pieces of Eight’: 1 x25ml Cointreau 1 x50ml Appletons XV Rum 1 x50ml Pineapple Juice 1 x25ml Lime Juice 1 x10ml Passion fruit Syrup, and a teaspoon of honey. Chuck all your ingredients in a boston tin/ cocktail shaker (which you can buy from any main supermarket) with some ice; strain and throw into a big glass with a few straws and umbrellas and volia... Summer is yours in a glass!

Revival of the fittest..// are remakes suffocating

FILM

Jane Levy fills the shoes that once belonged to Bruce Campell in the reimaginig of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead.

originality in Hollywood?

With remakes appearing to dominate the box office this year, we are compelled to ask if this trend is here to stay. For the past decade, remakes and adaptations of some of the most well-known cinematic classics, which were instrumental in the success of film makers and actors alike, have dominated the box office. In 2013, remakes of Red Dawn, Evil Dead and Carrie are due to be released and this particular trend shows no sign of decreasing. Historically, when cinema was still a relatively new art form, this would not have been a major concern, particularly as new technology enabled such classic narratives to be enhanced in the retelling. However, what may once have been considered innocent retelling has now induced great concern in the industry due to a distinct lack of original stories emanating from Hollywood. This leaves us wondering if this situation is symptomatic of the industry’s desire to evoke a simpler time in its evolution to pop culture, or has Hollywood really lost its way? Like most forms of entertainment, the film industry is a business driven by investment and the need to make a profit. It can7

Chloe Grace Moretz as Carrie, in the latest remake of Stephen King’s horror classic of the same name. not be denied that in such difficult economic times, even one bad investment may cause a studio’s demise. Perhaps the only safe choice is in the form of a remake or sequel of a highly successful existing franchise, thus diminishing the original concept. Although when looking at the situation from this perspective, remakes and sequels may seem the only solution financially, the question remains as to whether or not this recycling will have a detrimental effect on Hollywood in the long term. Nevertheless, not every reimagining can be classed as dire when compared with the original. It is evident that the formula for a suc-

cessful remake depends upon whether or not it works as a film in its own right. A prime example of this recently is the Dawn of the Dead remake, Zack Snyder’s version of the George A. Romero horror classic of the same name. In spite of initial hostility, the film was acclaimed critically and eventually gathered a cult following of its own, after fans of the original accepted it as a remake and appreciated it as a horror film in its own right. Fortunately, Snyder’s film was released thirty years after the original, which worked to its advantage by making the retelling of the zombie-ridden classic appear

timely. Snyder achieved this by breaking down the essential components needed to create a successful remake. In this particular case, this was largely due to the fact that he paid homage to Romero’s work by including cameos from original cast members Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger and Tom Savini, a clever ploy which caught his audience off guard. Crucially, the remake was able to hold its own as it had a new plot, which worked on its own terms, thus making it a worthy remake of the genre. In addition, whether or not an adaptation, sequel or remake is successful should be based on the question of the cinematic intention and quality. An obvious example that the motive for a product is simply to make money can be seen in the release last Summer of the all new and arguably improved Spiderman film, remade only ten years after the webslinger made his cinematic debut. Clearly, this was a cynical tactic by Sony to make a Spidey film to capitalise on and coincide with the hype being generated by the release of The Avengers, Marvel’s super hero dream team.As a result, the Spiderman reboot felt sanitised and formulaic-

which was reinforced when the public did not accept yet another causeless remake. Although the motives driving remakes are usually obvious, it should be remembered that film companies themselves are often the public part of larger conglomerates, such as Tristar and Sony. Consequently, if profit is simply based on the legacy of the name, a studio can almost guarantee that there will be enough sales to recoup some losses from original films which are released. It is indicative of a wider culture of cinema, in which cheaply made, handheld horror movies are churned out because the returns dwarf the production costs. Often, these studios already have the IP rights to past franchises or classic, so it is a cheaper in-

vestment in a similar vein. As part of this growing trend, we have copies of copies of remakes, rip-offs and sequels which are completely lacking in originality and worse still have nothing worth saying. Instead of having cinema, we have propaganda movies which try to convince us cinema is worthy but which ironically prove that it is not. However, entrenched in such disappointing mire, there is the occasional Star Trek or Batman Begins remake which demonstrate that not all of these distributions are rubbish. In future, could we expect to see a remake of The Godfather? Hopefully not. This is exactly the kind of film sapling we need to grow through in order to dispose of this unimaginative foliage of remakes we have been seeing year after.

Films to see this April

SPRING BREAKERS

Director: Harmony Korine Starring: James Franco, Selina Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine. Plot: College girls land in jail after robbing a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation, only to find themselves bailed out by a drug dealer who has other plans for them. What’s the hype? A film that not only stars Disney darlings Gomez and Hudgens getting to shake off their stigma of innocence with bikinis and bad behavior, but also a trigger-happy Franco doing his best trailer-trash drug dealer impersonation is enough to catch most people’s attention. Although the images that have been released over the past few months promise themes of humour, seduction and a good time; the recent trailer has expressed this is far more than “Disney Gone Wild”, but a far more darker tale of drugs, sex and violence. Who Should See it? If you’re familiar with Korine’s other work, you will more than likely know what this quartet of girls are in for with this film. However, Spring Breakers looks

to break it’s stars out of their good-girl molds, which for those who grew up with High School Musical is definitely a must-see.

The Place Beyond the Pines

Director:Derek Cianfrance Starring: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Plot: A motorcycle stunt rider turns to a life of robbing banks as a way to provide for his girlfriend and their newborn child, While a decision that puts him in to the radar of an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective. What’s the Hype: Although this may seem similar to Gosling’s other film Drive; The Place Beyond the Pines looks to be on par with Cianfrance’s last cinematic triumph, Blue Valentine but whilst Blue Valentine focused on a honest portrayal of a relationship. The Place Beyond the Pine looks to inject a dose of Crime Thriller dynamics as well as duel narrative which looks to eventually collide with one another for what appears to be a chaotic third act. Early previews indicate that all actors provide stunning performances that both enhances and compliments Cianfrance’s documentary-style cinematic direction. Who Should See It: Anyone looking to enjoy a film without the added distraction of overly CGI-filled action sequences, poorly scripted character development or dull story arcs. While it does seem like a difficult or uncomfortable film to watch, those who enjoy these types of films will be able to enjoy and appreciate.

Hyde Park Picture House..//

The Hyde Park Picture House, a prime example of Edwardian architecture was built 1914, and despite the initial outbreak of war only months prior; is one of the last few surviving picture houses in the UK. With over nearly 100 years of distributing cinematic features, the picture house has claimed itself to be “The Cosiest in Leeds”, a title which to this very day the picture house lives up to.The first film to be shown at the picture House was the patriotic drama “Their Only Son”. Although few cinemas were built during the war years, audiences still continued to grow with the picture gaining more popularity as the years went on and soon would become the highlight of many people’s week. A vibrant heart within the thriving Hyde Park community, with the introduction of sound in the 1920’s, the stride of the little Picture House of Hyde Park was strengthened even more so, paving the road for an even bigger audience. Over the years, despite all the changes to how we view cinematic features, whether it be through the sensation of 3D, IMAX or DVDs, the Picture House is still all the more social landscape of Leeds.

holds a prominent role in the ever changing

Although the Hyde Park Picture House is also showing the previously mentioned Spring Breakers and The Place Beyond the Pines at a cheaper price; the picture house also hosts its own cinematically themed nights during the month of April. These often contain classics that pay homage to a specific genre, actor or director, with nights offering to celebrate these particular themes that are more than catered to the avid film lover. So... What do

TRINITY

YOU think?

We headed down to the opening to see what surprises British fashion designer, Henry Holland had in store for the big reveal. We also got your opinions and wanted to see what you thought of Leeds’ newest shopping centre. House of Holland founder, Henry Holland was brought in to create a spectacle for the opening event. He didn’t disappoint with his reveal of a record breaking dress, which at 15 metres long is the equivalent of three double decker buses and 480 square metres wide. The world’s longest designer dress was modeled by aerial acrobat and former Cirque Du Soleil principle artist, Colette Morrow.

Ben, Jack & Timmy. All 18. “We are a local group of street dancers and we’ve come down to check out the designated busking areas that Trinity Leeds has provided. I think it’s such a good idea because it means that we don’t have to worry about being moved on all the time and allows us to put a good show on for everyone!”

Sarah. 22. “Being a university student I’m always looking for ways to spend my money! Now that all my favourite shops are in the same place it’s perfect for me! I’ve heard there is going to be a student lock-in soon too, so I’ll definitely be getting a ticket for that! I like the layout and how it’s outside but inside at the same time. The designers have done a really great job, the glass roof looks amazing, I love it.”

Elena & Katie. 20 & 21 “Both of us work in the city centre so Trinity Leeds is in an ideal location for us to nip in to shop on our lunch break or for some dinner and drinks after work. I’m really looking forward to trying out The Alchemist, I’ve heard they do some really cool things when they’re making the cocktails!”

TRINTY’S ROOFTOP DELIGHTS..// ANGELICA // Whilst Trinity was being constructed, pedestrians would gaze up to the soon-to-be balconies of Angelica and wonder what views would that rooftop bar and brasserie be enveloped by - and the wait was most definitely worth it. The bar is constructed of circular pristine stainless steel that you notice as soon as you step into the rooftop glasshouse. Whilst outside you can bask in the view of Leeds from above and humungous Olive Trees and shrubs. Throughout the day they serve bites to eat such as oysters, clams and caviar but if you fancied something more substantial, their sister restaurant ‘Crafthouse’ is located on the lower floor. The cocktails are of a very good standard and done with great etiquette; but it should be noted that it comes with a price tag. Angelica is not for the financially faint-hearted and in comparison to other bars in the city, it perhaps is not the best value for money. On the other hand, it is the only rooftop bar in Leeds city centre with those unparalleled views, so for most it will have to be the price you pay; alternatively it is a very good setting for a special occasion or celebration where the champers would be at the ready. http://www.angelica-restaurant.com/

THE ALCHEMIST // This trendy chain of bars are mostly situated in Manchester’s city centre but since the opening of the new shopping hotspot Trinity Leeds, the company have branched out and currently occupy a corner suite for the chemistry themed cocktail bar. It boasts a very long heated (and covered!) balcony that is great when you and your friends decide to drink out in the open but safe from the typical Yorkshire weather. The cocktails are created and served with the type of Chemistry equipment you would remember experimenting with as a youngster, which add a real creative and enthusiastic way of slurping down your cocktails. The shots are even served in minute beakers! The one problem is overcrowding. If you’re planning TO GO ON a Friday or Saturday evening, unless you have booked a table, you’ll either be in an exceptionally long queue or be consuming your drinks within a sardine can! Be aware! http://www.thealchemist.uk.com/

BEST OF THE PAST..//

Fashion industry experts warn that there must be no more than one vintage thing in your look. Next, you always need to pay close attention to the quality, but do not expect perfection. If you want to buy a truly vintage garment, ask the staff about all details. The most important thing to note is that actual vintage sizes are different from modern. Nevertheless, the biggest disappointment, which can happen with you in any vintage shop, is not to find the right size of something that you really want. However, do not throw up your hands! In this case make this a regular shop to visit, and remember that good vintage comes to those who dig.

Did you know that the average person spends about three years of his life shopping? Undoubtedly, most of us are not averse to spend their time browsing the latest fashions and searching for interesting clothes. Treating yourself to something nice at the shops is known to have a positive impact on mood. Nevertheless, there is one tricky moment. Most popular high street stores offer quite similar fashion collections, and moreover, there is a big chance to see someone wearing exactly the same outfit as you. In order to create your own unique style, you can spend a lot of money by buying clothes in branded and designer shops. However, there is an easier way to look stylish for a much more affordable price.

T

hose days, when wearing old and used clothes was weird and humiliating, are gone. Nowadays, to complement your look with exclusive retro accessories and wear a glorious evening dress from the sixties, is not only chic, but is considered good form. It is not a secret that old fashion has made a monumental comeback in recent years, and the obsession with vintage clothing among young people is growing extremely fast. The word “vintage” is used to describe something that was made from the 1920s to the 1980s. In general, it can be everything that is old-fashioned or “from another time“, but it is important to note that vintage clothing is not just old or worn clothes; it also had to be fashionable and stylish at the time. Thus, each vintage thing is a “thing with its unique history“. Vintage style should not be confused with grunge. It brings us back only a few decades earlier and refers to the 90s fashion trends such as combat boots, cropped sweaters and flannel shirts. Despite the fact that nowadays the majority of high street outlets are doing stylized retro clothing, the best places to explore various old styles from different eras are second-hand and vintage shops. This kind of shopping is exciting and en-

15

joyable because you can find unique wardrobe items that nobody else has.

The first impression, when you get there, is that this place looks interesting. The building is very old itself, that makes you feel lost in time. The variety of styles and sizes that they offer is impressive. You will need plenty of time just to browse through the plethora of retro sportswear, woolly jumpers and other knick-knacks. It strives to provide real retro clothing; nonetheless they also have their own brand. They manufacture their clothes from original vintage textile, because recycling and zero waste policy are very common among this industry.

All roads lead to Leeds If you are a bargain hunter, then Leeds city centre is a real gem for you. It is like a Mecca for all the retro lovers, with lots of thrift and vintage shops. “Pop Boutique” is a relatively small store with racks of great vintage. There you can find all kinds of exciting treats, from cowboy boots and granny dresses, to neon windbreakers and tie-dyed t-shirts. The shop’s interior brings you back to the seventies, and the staff are friendly and well-informed about the clothes and its history. “Pop Boutique” sources all their products carefully. Everything is washed and ready for you to wear. However, there are a lot of stylized and transformed items, but they are still different and cheaper than anything you might find on the high street. Claudia Free, a sales manager at “Pop Boutique”, says: “We have a very varied customer base but our main markets are students and people in their mid-twenties to early thirties. Some of them wear entirely 50’s clothing but others just want 90’s style items, and that is great, we have a shop where you can find both of those styles. Hopefully, we can offer them individual, reasonably priced

FASHION

Everything new is wellforgotten old While fashion trends come and go vintage business never changes. You do not necessarily have to look “vintage” to wear retro clothing. Vintage is for everyone; just be brave and experiment with different styles to suit your mood and personality. Vintage shopping is not only a great way of recycling clothing, but also an inexhaustible source of inspiration and an interesting addition to any look. Some of the pieces are so beautiful and unique that you must have them in your wardrobe, and as it is said, “Fashions fade, but style is eternal.”

Good things come to those who rummage clothing that is fashionable. I think vintage has become more popular in recent years as it is affordable individual clothing. “Primark” may be cheap but it is certainly not individual. I think our customers like that they won’t see other people in the clothes they buy and the quality of vintage is usually very good. “Blue Rinse”, which was handpicked by our team is certainly another hotspot for the finest vintage in Leeds. It has three floors of old goodies, which in equal measure serve boys and girls.

It is clear that to find exactly the same outfit as you have imagined, is hard. As it is with all secondhand shops, you have to visit all these places again, to catch the best garment. The most unique pieces quickly disappear. You need to have patience to rummage through the array of clothing to find something worth having. Vintage shopping can definitely be a challenge. First of all, it requires a little background knowledge of history and styles. It is important to know how to match clothes from different times.

Not all of us can afford top of the range skin care, salon hair products or luxary spa days but never fear! There are many simple solutions out there for those of us who are feeling the pinch, and chances are you can find them in your kitchen cupboard and if not, you will be able to pick them up at your local grocery store. They’ll be much cheaper than these ‘leading brands’ and ‘miracle treatments’ we hear so much about and possibly be even better. Before Neutrogena, L’oreal or Garnier people kept themselves looking their best by making their own products. The following are some simple creations you can try for yourself at home.

FOR HAIR

For all hair types- Egg. Depending on the condition of your hair, using different parts of the egg can help remedy the problem. • Oily hair use the egg whites only. • Dry hair use the egg yolks only. You can also include a dash of olive oil for extra conditioning. • Normal hair use the whole egg. For all mixtures beat or whisk the egg until smooth. Depending on the length of your hair a different number of eggs will be needed for each person. Apply enough to coat the whole of your hair while it is clean and damp. Leave the mixture on for 20 minutes then wash off with cool water and shampoo your hair as normal. Removing product build-up from hair- Baking soda. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda with small amounts of water until it forms a thick paste. Massage it through damp hair and leave it for 15 minutes. Rinse the paste out with warm water and shampoo your hair as normal. his can be applied every two weeks.

FOR SKIN

Dry skin- Avocado and Honey. Both avocado and honey are moisturising for the skin so this works great for stubborn dry skin. Also avocado on its own its great for treating dry, frizzy hair. 1/2 ripe avocado 1/4 cup of honey Mash the avocado in a bowl and mix in the honey until it becomes a paste. Apply it to your face for 10-15minutes and then wash off with cold water. Acne prone skin- Strawberry, Honey, Lemon and Brown sugar. The salicylic acid found in strawberries is beneficial for skin along with the properties found in honey and lemon and the brown sugar makes a great natural exfoliant.

6 Strawberries 1 tablespoon Honey 1 tablespoon Brown sugar 1 tablespoon Lemon juice De stem the strawberries and then press them into a paste. Add the lemon juice, honey and brown sugar and mix them until they’re equally dispersed. Apply the mask to your face and leave it for 10-15 minutes. When the time is up wash it off with warm water.

RUNNING HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER..// What are you usually doing at 9 o’clock on a Saturday morning? While most of us are sleeping off our Friday night hangovers or having a long lie in after a hard week at work, a fairly unknown running event is going on in various locations all around the country. Not too far from Leeds City Centre and a short walk away from the heart of student living, hundreds of runners, a generous amount of volunteers and a handful of first aiders are all participating in a free five kilometre run. Starting in London in 2004, one man wanted to create a free event that his friends and fellow running club members could all go to. Paul Sinton-Hewitt started to gain momentum with his concept by making parkrun Limited a not for profit company. Meaning that nobody can take advantage of his idea or make money from it. Over the years the event has attracted some very high profile companies such as Adidas, Sweatshop and even Lucozade. “We are proud to sponsor these great 5k runs. They are a brilliant way to enjoy fresh air with other runners.” – Lucozade

21

fitness

With these huge sponsors on board, Paul and his team can make sure that the event stays completely free. The parkrun fever has spread through Europe to Poland and Denmark, and has now gone worldwide with a number of runs in Australia, USA and even Camp Bastion in Afghanistan! The parkrun in Leeds is a short dash, two and a half times round Hyde Park. When you sign up through the parkrun website you receive a barcode that you can print out and must take to every run that you do. The reason for the barcode is a way of tracking your stats from your runs; you can see later online where you placed overall against other people.
