Past and present of the industry in Mรกlaga

Past -This photo shows the textile industry in Mรกlaga in the 19th century. In their facilities, they used to have workshops

with

mechanical

chairlifts and selfactina spindles, offices, warehouses, and even homes for employees in the neighbourhood. The company was the first large Andalusian textile industry. The factory employed up to 1,500 people, mostly women, becoming the second establishment of its kind in Spain. The success of the first cotton factory made it open a second factory a few years later. La Aurora, property of the Larios, which worked until the agrarian crisis and the Catalan competition caused its demise in 1905.

In this photo we can see many women working with a machine to make textile garments. It seems strange to me that there are only women working in the photo, because at that time, women didn´t used to work, they used to stay at home taking care of the children.

In this photo we can see that the factory was located near the beach.

Present - In this photo we can see the cement factory in MĂĄlaga. This

factory

is

located

in

the

neighbourhood of La AraĂąa (the Spider) and it has been active for over 110 years. -This factory has an average of 120 workers. In terms of the number of workers, the difference with the textile industry is remarkable. We can see that the textile factory has a much larger number of workers than the cement factory; in my opinion, this must be because of the development of new machines and new technologies in the current factory. I think that workers have been replaced by machines.
