Education: Past and present

EDUCATION IN THE PAST

PHOTO 1 (work in groups)

PHOTO 2 (strict rules)

PHOTO 3 (punishments)

PHOTO 4 (current class)

Describe In the first photo there is a group of class of primary school. The teacher is in the background of the class. There are kids doing activities in groups. In the second photo we can see a group of children sitting in an specific order, it could be because of the teacher. After that, in the schools there were more strict rules. In the third photo we can see one of the worst punishment of the schools, some teachers hit you with rulers or even with watches in your head or hands. When the kids were naughty, the teacher punished them in ridiculous ways. In the fourth photo we can see a current class (our class) and we’re sitting as we want and we’re speaking a little bit.

Similarities All the photos were taken indoors, during a lesson at school. In the older photos we can see young students doing activities (such as writing individual exercises, oral exercises or group activities). Students in the past also used to sit in pairs. Teachers had also used maps for their geography lessons. They explained things orally. They also had a blackboard which was used to write things and make it easier to explain, just as it is used now.

Differences Some of the differences are, for example, that the first and second photographs have been taken in classes where boys and girls are separated, while now, it’s completely normal that both boys and girls are in the same class. Another difference is that they used to work in groups very often back at that time, whereas now we usually work individually. Also, the second photo shows that some years ago they were very strict, everything had to be in order and everyone had to be silent and listening, and so they were, but it’s harder for the teachers to make that possible because there are fewer rules now. On the other hand, we can see they had some “strange” punishments like sending you to a corner wearing animal ears, which were made of paper.
