My name is Anat Al-Allan, I’m based in Amman.
I studied Design and Visual Communication at the German Jordanian University in Amman, Jordan and an Erasmus year This is a portfolio of my best projects and illustrations in both countries.
Most of these projects include illustrations it the most I like using illustrations to visualize information and make it easier to understand and digest.
I enjoyed the process of each project and I’m happy with the outcomes.
These projects were done during the past two years, some of them as university projects and others during my work in different internships. Enjoy!
In Jordan, we use popular proverbs in situations to refer to very old similar situations. Each proverb has an old original story that was passed on between generations and used until today.
In this project, we were asked to choose a proverb, research its original story, and illustrate the story.
My proverb is Bab Alnajjar Mkhalaa. The story of this proverb is about a carpenter who wanted to retire and settle down with his wife. His boss refused at first, then agreed to let him retire after he makes one last cottage as a celebration of his work. The carpenter was not thrilled and didn’t build the cottage as good as he usually does. The surprise was that his boss asked him to build this cottage because he wanted to gift it to him, the carpenter felt sad and disappointed with himself for not doing a good job this time.
My illustrations were inspired by an old carpentry in my neighborhood.
In this project we did a personality test by Jordan Peterson called the five personality traits, then we visualized the result we got from the test. My concept was using the idea of the left and right brain, and how our personality traits, characteristics and behaviors can determine which part of the brain we use more.
I designed a simple informative catalogue, illustrated the most important aspects of my personality, used handwritten keywords, and used colors that gavee the same or a close meaning to each trait of the five personality traits.
In the information design course, we were asked to design a map for our neighborhood.
I chose to only highlight the cultural artistic places that made me love and belong to this neighborhood, and not to show the commercial places that distorted and harmed this area and the people living in it.
I illustrated the lifestyle of the people who originally lived in Al-Waibdeh The map is called: Al-Waibdeh that we love.
Al-Waibdeh is known for galleries, museums, language centers, beautiful churches, studios and its old trees.
It’s a peaceful quiet neighborhood and showed that by the colors I chose.
During my work at the marketing agency Statement GmbH in Saarbruecken, Germany I designed a series of posters for the city theater for a series of events (Mamma Mia musical, Carmen play, and Swan Lake ballet).
For the 24 th time in a row, artists in Saarland are committed to AIDS relief. With the donation of their works of art, they set a sign of solidarity with people living with HIV or AIDS and in this way actively support the work of the Aids-Hilfe Saar.
During my work at the marketing agency Statement GmbH in Saarbruecken, Germany I designed the poster for the latest edition of the art auction event.
Body Storage is a photographic book designed for a photography course. The concept is to show the different body parts where unhealed traumas are stored and kept within us.
I photographed different people and choose to show the traumas in scribbles that are angry and obsessive on a different transparent paper on top of the photograph as a reminder that these traumas are not part of us forever and to keep the beauty and intimacy of each body as it is.
Under the title Aliens in the sky and wierd insects on earth this board game was designed, showing the evolution stages of aliens. The game is Snakes and Ladders but in a new theme. It was printed in a 70 *50 cm format as a poster and as a board game. I illustrated each one of the charachters that evolove into an the final alien using procreate.
The concept of the game came to me while watching documentaries about insects for this project.
I landed on information about beetles laying their eggs in a ball of dung and pushing it in a straight line following sunlight or moonlight or the Milkyway (being the only creatures on the planet to have this ability).
Pharaos discovered this information about beetles 5000 years ago therefore beetles were worshiped by them and considered the god of birth and sunlight
I found this information very interesting and from here I started imagining that maybe since they are the only creatures to have some type of connection to the sky they would also be able to evolve into aliens in the future.
Back to when in Jordan
In this book design project, we were asked to choose a non-Arabic child›s story, translate it to Arabic, and redesign it in our style. This is a story about accepting our differences, it›s called Geraldine.
I illustrated it with black pens on paper then captured them on Adobe Capture, and edited them.
In our Realization Print course, we were asked to design a planner for 2021 My concept was all about fruits and jucie recepies, and measuring ones productivity during the day.
I used vivid colors because they hype me up and make me feel more excited for the day. I printed the planner using recycled paper and the outcome was very good. My friend used this planner all year.
I illustrated fruits in an abstract way using pens, then colored them digitally.
The illustrated fruits are used as dividers between each month. Fruits I used are the seasonal fruits in Jordan.
