Introduction to the Tek RMD from Matia Mobility

The Tek Robotic Mobilisation Device is specifically engineered for individuals with lower limb weakness or complete paralysis. It empowers them to maintain an upright standing position for extended periods and facilitates both health-giving standing with movement.

Users can move easily from sitting to standing and then move around in their environment. The product is custom-fitted to hold the user in a safe and therapeutic upright posture.

This allows more freedom and independence to perform daily tasks, while improving overall wellbeing by encouraging regular standing. Imagine standing and reaching an object from a high shelf or working at a normal kitchen surface again.

The user boards the device from the back which avoids risky transfers. Once onboard, a user can move easily to stand and then from place to place by using a joystick to drive it.

Moving from sitting to standing and vice versa is achieved by squeezing or “leaning on” a handlebar lever.

The Tek RMD has an Electric Lifter so the user does not need effort to stand.

Plus, there are some optional accessories outdoor kit and a Transfer Seat.

This Electric Lifter version has replaced the earlier Manual version which was only ideal for those with good arm and grip strength.

The Tek RMD allows those with upper limb weakness to use the product. This means that those recovering from a stroke, living with MS or other neurological conditions can mostly use the product.

The Tek RMD is both narrower and shorter than a wheelchair and highly manoeuvrable. The outdoor wheel kit allows the user to move more easily on grass and other outdoor surfaces.

The user is held in a standing position by a “cushion” that spans the hip area and maintains the hips in extension. The shins are in contact with generous, soft pads that are adjustable in three planes to ensure that the knees are held in a correct position and the legs are supported in place without risking tissue viability. Each Tek RMD is adjusted to suit the individual user.

Benefits of the Tek RMD

Standing is recommended to everyone for long term health. When upright mobility is prevented or limited due to leg paralysis or weakness, the Tek RMD encourages each user to stand more frequently and for longer – and move around indoors or outdoors whilst doing this.

The outdoor wheels allow use on grass

Many persons who have been encouraged to use a standing frame frequently struggle to find the motivation to “just stand there” – even if it is supposed to be good for them.

Most standing wheelchairs are not able to achieve a great upright posture. This is because they are fundamentally wheelchairs with additional functionality; they need to keep the user inclined backwards for stability so they are only suitable for limited upright standing.

Ultimately each person can decide on how they value the features offered by the different products.

The Tek RMD allows you to feel good about standing because it should allow a greater sense of independence – you can get on with your life at home or at work.

The standard and outdoor wheels compared

Daily standing delivers positive effects on bone density, peripheral circulation, bowel and bladder function and pressure sore risk. Prolonged wheelchair use without such standing cannot deliver such benefits.
