‘No. Marc told me about it. I was very little at the time. He used to tell me stories about science before I went to sleep.’ ‘And did he tell you about this lab, too?’ ‘No, he didn’t. I discovered the lab myself. Marc always kept a small diary in the pocket of his lab coat. While he told me those stories, he sometimes took the diary out of his pocket to look at his notes. When Marc disappeared, I asked for his lab coat. I found the diary, and inside, on a folded sheet of paper, were the explanations about this lab. They were written back-to-front. It looked like a foreign language. But then I found the trick, and I could read them easily.’ ‘And here we are.’ ‘Yes.’
‘She would destroy it. There could be important things in there. Things that explain why Marc disappeared, and where he went. Things that could help my father.’ Bert nods silently and he makes no more objections. He follows Enid through the maze of pots and bottles of Lucius’s lab. 6
