HAVE YOU HEARD OF PCSP?

Over the Christmas period while visiting various events across our Borough, my simple message was to encourage people to give of their time for others. We all have the same twenty-four hours of time a day and sharing our time for the benefit of others is one of the best gifts we can give. So thank you to everyone who volunteers and makes Antrim and Newtownabbey a great place to live. Have you decided yet on your New Year resolutions? Why not take advantage of our fantastic inclusive family membership that gives you access to all five leisure centres for just £39 a month for a family. Make sure you keep healthy during 2018 and give your family MORE! See page 7 for information on our special January offer. I would like to personally thank each of you for helping the Council become the top recycling Council in Northern Ireland. This is fantastic news for our environment. We are continually finding new ways to help you recycle more and your support and enthusiasm for this is key to our Borough’s great recycling performance. For more information, see page 13. I am already halfway through my year as Mayor and I have met so many wonderful people across the Borough. I am looking forward to the rest of my term and the opportunities it gives me to see first-hand the great work going on across Antrim and Newtownabbey. I hope you all have an enjoyable 2018 and please use our Winter Wise tips to ensure you and your family remain safe this winter.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Paul Hamill recently opened the new 3G pitch at Neillsbrook Community Centre following an investment of around £140,000 made by the Council. The investment has transformed the three previous MUGAs into one large 3G pitch, which boasts new goal ends as well as higher fencing, making the facility suitable for both rugby and football. We recently launched our new leisure brand, which aims to encourage our clubs to take part in physical exercise and be MORE active, MORE often. Facilities like these are the perfect way to provide our Borough with opportunities to take part in physical activity and lead a healthier lifestyle. Thank you to all the local clubs who were involved in the consultation process as it is your views that helped us provide this new facility.

RANDALSTOWN IS BLOOMING BRILLIANT!

LOOK AFTER BIRDS THIS WINTER

The results of the 2017 Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom Competition have been announced!

It is good to feed small birds, especially during the winter but if it is not done responsibly, it can attract mice, rats and other larger birds, like pigeons to your garden.

What great news it was to hear that Randalstown achieved a Gold and overall winner in the Small Town category.

Try these tips to discourage rodents while enjoying birds at your feeder:

The Council has been working in partnership with Tidy Randalstown to improve the town though planting schemes and engagement with volunteers, schools and local business.

• Switch to tube feeders that do not spill so much of the seed onto the ground

This fantastic achievement demonstrates the commitment and hard work that the local residents have made in partnership with the Council and comes hot on the heels of the recent Ulster in Bloom Best Small Town Award.

• Place your feeder where the birds are nesting and roosting - feeders closer to shrubs and trees are usually more popular as the birds can feed out of the wind and rain • Keep the area below the bird feeder clear of seeds • Choose No Waste Bird Food: A number of bird feeding options are available that reduce the amount of waste that’s dropped • Store your bird seed in airtight, watertight, rodent-proof containers away from where rodents live Birds eat a variety of seeds and fruits and we have some ideas for choosing the right food for birds:

RECYCLE MORE IN OUR PARKS

• Black-oil sunflower seed • Mixed bird seed • Nyjer or Thistle seed

You may have noticed new double bins along our cycle path from Jordanstown Loughshore Park to Hazelbank Park.

• Wild bird peanuts – place in wire feeder to prevent chicks choking

These 16 bins add the option to recycle, whilst out and about, for everyone who uses the path. These bins will help us to keep up our high levels of recycling in the Borough.

• Nectar

• Suet/fat balls • Fresh or dried fruit After you have made the appropriate choice of food make sure the feeder is in a place where you can see and enjoy it!

QUIT SMOKING IN 2018 With Christmas over and a New Year beginning, January is a popular time of year to quit smoking. Increase your chances of success by seeking out local quit smoking services. Gillian McAtackney, Workplace Smoking Cessation Specialist offers the following tips: 1 Set a realistic quit date and stick to it 2 Get free local help – check out www.want2stop.info to find out what local free quit smoking services are available 3 Deal with nicotine withdrawal – everyone in Northern Ireland is entitled to free Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patches, gum, etc). Your GP or pharmacist can offer advice

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE Bad weather affects our pets as it’s harder for them to stay warm and more difficult to exercise them. Naturally different animals will have differing needs. If your pet is kept outside, make sure they have plenty of warm bedding and there is adequate shelter at all times to protect them from the wind and rain. Feeding them sufficiently and regularly will also help to keep them warm. It is also important to ensure they have 24-hour access to water. Dogs in particular will still need exercised. Just a short walk or bouncing a ball around the garden is quite often enough to keep them happy. Some animal toys will also help stimulate them if they can’t get out of the house because of ice and snow.

i

If you are worried about your pet contact your local vet. If you are concerned about the welfare of a neighbour’s pet contact the Animal Welfare Officer T. 028 2563 3134 or E. animal.welfare@midandeastantrim.gov.uk

4 Go to a pharmacy which offers a free quit smoking service. Ask for the pharmacist, tell them you have set a quit date and would like to sign up to their free quit smoking service 5 Alternatively, you can make an appointment with your GP Using Nicotine Replacement Therapies and having support to quit smoking more than doubles your chances of quitting successfully.

SCARRED FOR LIFE Hot appliances, liquids and bath water are responsible for more than half of all burns and scalds, with young children being particularly vulnerable. Home accidents can easily be prevented. Make sure you visit our digital version of Borough Life on our website antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk to see the video of how easy it is for a child to burn themselves or be scalded. It can take just seconds for an accident to happen and we would encourage parents and carers to take these steps to minimise the risks: • Hot drinks can still scald 15 minutes after they’ve been made and can result in years of skin graft treatment. Ensure hot drinks are out of reach of babies and children • Hot water scalds in seconds. Run the cold water first and always check the temperature of bath water • Hair straighteners can get very hot, very quickly and cause serious burns that scar for life. Keep out of the reach of children and put them away safely after use

MAKING CHANGES

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is currently the only Council in Northern Ireland to employ a public health nutritionist. The aim of this role is to improve the dietary health of our Borough. Dr Janice McConnell shares some advice with us here.

Follow these tips to help you make lifelong changes: • Keep a food diary – find out what you are really eating and drinking and keep tabs on yourself • Set goals – put it in writing and tell someone what you are doing

EATING WELL Eating well is a cornerstone of health and wellbeing which can add life to years and not just years to life! The Eatwell Guide, launched in 2016, is the UK’s food-based guidelines on how we can eat more healthily; providing guidance around the four main food groups which make up our diets. Copies of the guide and related notes can be accessed from www.gov.uk/government/publications/theeatwell-guide

• Plan your meals – everything that you intend to eat and drink is detailed, informing your shopping list • Don’t eat direct from family-sized/go-large/share packaging – we eat with our eyes and our tummy gets full before our eyes grow weary • Use smaller plates and bowls So are you up for the challenge? Why not set some goals today? Your future self will thank you for it!

i

Only 18% of adults are eating their 5-a-day of fruit and vegetables and as a population we are eating 2-3 times more sugar than the maximum recommended intake for health. We are also consuming levels of fibre and oily fish which fall below the recommendations, while consuming too much red meat.

ONE MAN’S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE Restore is ‘not-for-profit’ as the income is used to keep other social and environmental work going. The scheme also offers many volunteering and upskilling placements.

The Council has containers in each of our five recycling centres for you to leave off items for reuse. These items are sorted by East Belfast Mission, refurbished and then sold in their twelve Restore charity shops across Belfast, Newtownards, Antrim and Larne.

This partnership with the Council means that as a social economy project, less is being sent to landfill. Restore has a van dedicated to collecting bulky items from recycling centres. If the items are in good enough quality for immediate resale, they are taken directly to the Restore shops to be sold. Alternatively, they are taken to the up-cycling project Refurb for a ‘make–over’ and are then sold through Restore.

Restore sells a range of good quality second hand clothes, furniture, books, bric-a-brac, refurbished furniture, bikes and other household items such as mirrors and pictures. They also do house clearances and collect other items.

LOVE FOOD, HATE WASTE This classic lentil soup is a treat for vegetarians as well as meat eaters and you can also add lots of different vegetables. Better still, it comes in at just 20 pence a serving – a fraction of what you’d pay for the posh supermarket equivalent. So start your New Year off cheap and healthy!

LENTIL SOUP • 200g/7oz red lentils • 1 carrot (65g/2oz) • 1 onion (120g/4oz) • 1 ¼ litres/2 ½ pts vegetable stock • Juice of half a lemon

• Salt, pepper, cumin powder and chilli powder, to taste • For extra flavour, garnish with finely chopped spring onions or chives

These ideas will get you started but why not tweet us yours @ANBorough

12 WASTE AND RECYCLING

1

Peel and finely chop the onion and carrot. Put into a large saucepan with the stock and lentils. Simmer, covered, for 25 minutes until the lentils are disintegrating. Allow to cool, then liquidise.

2

Reheat to serve and adjust seasoning with lemon juice, salt, pepper, ground cumin and ground chilli. FREEZER TIP: It’s worth making double quantities and freezing this soup in portions. Don’t miss out the lemon, it makes all the difference. VARIATIONS: Other vegetables could be chopped up and cooked with the lentils, but don’t include potatoes as they will tend to make the consistency gluey.

NUMBER 1 RECYCLERS! Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council area was named as the NUMBER 1 recyclers in Northern Ireland for April to June 2017. The Borough recorded recycling rates of 59.5% for all the waste collected by Council from your houses, recycling g n li centres and local businesses. This c y c e r is a fantastic effort from you and r a te s helps both environmentally and economically!

The good news doesn’t stop there. Early figures for June to September show that recycling from your homes has increased by 33% compared to the same period last year. Landfill is down for the same rate which means 900 tonnes of waste are not being landfilled, saving approximately £85,000 on disposal charges.

The 'no food waste' message continues to hit home with food and garden waste recycling up a whopping 22% - that means we can produce more compost, so thank you! Don’t forget to leave your red tag on your brown bin and our staff will leave you green bags to keep up your great efforts. Alternatively, you can pick up the green bags from our Council facilities. Finally, the total amount of waste collected from your houses is down by 10%. This is extra special as no waste means no cost for the Council and you! Hopefully this means the Love Food Hate Waste message is working and everyone is using their food leftovers in tasty new dishes. Don’t forget to try our new recipe for using up all your vegetables on page 12.

ANTRIM TOWN BUSINESS AWARDS

STUDENT EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITY

Do you know of an award winning business?

We are currently seeking two students to participate in the 2018 Student Exchange Programme with our sister city, Gilbert in Phoenix, Arizona during July and August.

Does a particular business offer excellent customer service? Do you know someone who has recently started a new business? Are you aware of a business that has gone from strength to strength? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then why not vote in this year’s Antrim Town Business Awards? The awards, organised in association with Antrim Town Team, will see local businesses compete in various categories. The Antrim Town Team consists of local Councillors and traders, who work together on projects to help increase footfall, generate business and enhance the town. The awards are a great way to recognise those businesses that serve Antrim Town and take pride in their products, services and local area. The awards will be decided by public vote and an independent judging panel. The public vote will run from Monday 15 January until Monday 13 February. You can also tweet your support for your favourite Antrim businesses by using the hashtag #AntrimBiz Winners will be announced at an awards dinner on Friday 2 March.

i

For more information or to vote visit antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/ antrimbusinessawards2018 or T. 028 9446 3113 ext. 31344 or E. Karen. Uprichard@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk

The 2018 Ballyclare May Fair is taking place this year from Tuesday 22 – Saturday 26 May. Add the date to your diary and keep an eye out for event information on our website and social media.

The Sister Cities Student Exchange Programme offers two local students an opportunity to travel to Gilbert to develop an understanding of a different country, its culture and people. The successful students will take part in a local socially beneficial project, before travelling to the USA, where they will spend three weeks experiencing the American way of life. They will stay with a host family bringing back a wealth of fascinating stories about their stay abroad, their contacts with new people and their experiences. At the end of the three weeks, the local students will return with their exchange partners. During their stay in the Borough, the Gilbert students will have a chance to experience a new culture and make lifelong friends by living with the family of their exchange student.

The Council covers all of the travel expenses and helps the students, parents/guardians to plan the summer activities. Students are expected to provide their own passports and spending money. To be eligible for the programme students must be in Year 13 and reside in the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
