Find out more about the local parks across Antrim and Newtownabbey

Buddy Bench

In partnership with HSCNI Council are adding Buddy benches to key locations within the Borough.

The locations are:

• Hazelbank Park

• Lilian Bland

• Sixmilewater Park in Ballyclare

• Crumlin Glen

These benches are in addition to the two existing ‘chatty’ benches, which are located in Castle Mall and Antrim Castle Gardens.

The aim of the buddy benches are to raise awareness on loneliness, the buddy benches provide a space for people to sit chat and make friends. Each plaque has a QR code, this links to a web page, providing information and helpful resources.

Council continue to look for new locations to add ‘buddy’ benches within the Borough.

23

Dog Parks

Council are proud to have 2 dog parks in the Borough, each dog park provides a large enclosed space with sections to separate small and large dogs.

The parks each are fitted with agility play equipment, fresh drinking water stations and have seating thought.

Dog Parks are located in:

• Antrim Castle Grounds

• O’Neill Road Newtownabbey

Dog Park rules are displayed at the entrance to the small and large park areas.

24

Parks and Open Spaces

The Green Flag award is an internationally recognition of an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Council have 18 Green Flags and 5 Community awards.

Great care and thought is taken on the design of new path networks within the Borough, pathways are designed to be accessible.

Work is underway to map out parks and open spaces to develop a grading system for users.

Award Winning Borough

Each year Council enter into towns and villages in the Borough into various horticultural competitions, this strengthens links in the community and helps improve and maintain high standards.

In 2022 Council have entered 17 towns and villages into Ulster in Bloom and Best Kept Awards, results will be announced in early October.

More information on the Council Green flags can be found at: https://antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/visitor/parks-open-spaces/green-flag/

25

Parks and Open Spaces

Biodiversity

Signage is added to parks in the Borough to give users an insight into what species and habitats are in their parks and open spaces.

Park rangers have developed and deliver programmes on different species; these guided tours currently take place in the Antrim Castle Gardens area and can be booked online: https://antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk/events

Group / Private bookings can be made by contacting: E. culture@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk

26

Sensory Gardens

Two Sensory Gardens have been added to our Borough; these gardens have been designed to provide a tranquil space and are enhanced with sensory equipment, seating and sensory themed planting.

Hazelbank Sensory Garden

This garden is embedded within Hazelbank Park and surrounded by ancient woodland.

The garden has been designed using widened pathways includes accessible floral beds, bright vibrant seating and sensory play equipment.

The garden is gated and is a ‘Dog control zone’ the area is quiet and provides a relaxing space for all ages.

27

Sensory Gardens

Antrim Sensory Garden

The Boroughs latest Garden has been developed on the grounds of an old disused bowling green beside the dog park in Antrim Castle Gardens. The Special Garden will be open from the 27th September and has been created using bright vibrant pathways, colourful seating and sensory planting.

Like Hazelbank the garden has bright fun sensory play equipment.

The garden is a quiet and surrounded by tall hedges creating a tranquil secret garden experience.
