Welcome to Ancasta’s 2015 Autumn Collection.

Summer appears to have flown by and having promised to be one of the more memorable, it certainly delivered!

We saw the first America’s Cup World series in Portsmouth triumphantly won by the home team.

Attendance was extraordinary both ashore and on the water. Even experienced campaigners cannot recall seeing as large a flotilla for any event anywhere in the world.

Other events this year included the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentennial celebration regatta which was well attended by a plethora of fine yachts including the imperious J Class and other Classics seldom seen in the Solent. After Cowes Week, the start of the Fastnet in August saw a record fleet for this classic offshore event. Watching 340 yachts leave the Solent was a great sight. All these well attended events have demonstrated that boating, in all its forms, is most definitely back on peoples’ priority list.

This summer is a great back drop for Ancasta and its Boat Show season starting with Cannes Boat show on the 8th of September where Ancasta will be showing a large number of Prestige’s new range including the highly acclaimed Prestige 680 launched in July. Lagoon will

also be showing a wide range with new 630 Motor yacht as well as the new 52‘SportTop’.

Beneteau Power are showing their range including the new Grand Turismo 40 while on the sail boat front, Beneteau are exhibiting a good selection of their leading models in their Oceanis and Sense ranges. Cannes is now the leading European Show for the British market and each year more and more would be boat buyers make the trip in mid-September. If this is of interest, we would be delighted to assist, so please call if you would like to attend.

For the UK based boaters Southampton Boat Show is without doubt the big event. To reflect more buoyant times, Ancasta and its manufacturers will be exhibiting the widest range of Sailing and Motor Yachts ever. Lagoon will be showing off the award winning 450 catamaran as well the very popular Lagoon 39.

Alongside the Lagoons on the water, Ancasta Yachts will be exhibiting the Oceanis 55 as well as the largest sailing yacht at the show, the highly acclaimed CNB 76. Also afloat Ancasta and Prestige will be exhibiting the 420s – 450 - 500 – 550. Beneteau Power and Ancasta will be hosting the UK premiere of the Gran Turismo 40 alongside the Trawler 34, Trawler 44 as well as the Antares 30 at an adjacent stand. Ashore, as the leading manufacturer of sailing yachts, Beneteau will have a wide range of their fine yachts on show including the Oceanis 31 – 35 – 38 – 41 – 45 – 48 with the 55 afloat.

Finally, a real indication that markets are looking a little more positive, Ancasta are exhibiting the very new Ker designed McConaghy 33 race boat which can be found at berth M321. Sam

Pearson Ancasta’s Race Boat Manager will be in attendance where you can discuss both our new and used race boat offerings.

Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair (HYSRR) along with Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics will also be in attendance at Southampton Boat Show. HYSRR will be launching their new online catalogue that shows all the superb products they support and services they provide so if you are looking to add some bits and pieces to your boat then HYSRR can be found in the Ocean Hall (stand G071). Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics will be next door with all your rigging needs including the superb leisure furl boom.

To coincide with the Southampton Boat Show, Ancasta will be leading the charge at the Swanwick Used Boat Show. This is the 36th edition of the show and is set to be the biggest and best yet with a wide range of great used boats from the leading marques in yachting. The park and ride facility from Swanwick marina to Mayflower Park in Southampton is a great way to cover both these shows.

We are hopeful that the busy Summer and genuine lift in enthusiasm witnessed in recent months will bolster our boat show efforts. There is lots on offer for all and we very much look forward to seeing you at one of the shows.

The Cannes Yachting Festival 8th-13th September 2015 Cannes is home to the prestigious Yachting Festival where more than 580 luxury yachts and boats are exhibited on the water as well as on shore. The event is spread over three locations: the Vieux Port, the Port Pierre Canto and the Palais des Festivals, located either end of the famous Croisette in Cannes.

There is a large selection of outstanding yachts at this year’s Festival of Sailing represented, as usual, by an experienced team of Ancasta brokers. The proposed lineup for Prestige Motor Yachts, Lagoon Catamarans and Beneteau at this year’s Festival is impressive to say the least: Lagoon will be presenting the Lagoon 39, 450, 560 S2, 620, 630 MotorYacht and it will be the first opportunity to view the new 52 SporTop.

Hot off the drawing board from the Ker and McConaghy gurus.

The Ker 33 is looking to lay down a new benchmark in the racer/cruiser division and with the huge success of Ker Design over the years and McConaghy’s unrivalled build quality, it is no surprise that orders have already been placed.

The philosophy behind the 33 was to highlight the design, build expertise and techniques that this duo has to offer. Noting the success of the 30-35ft racer/cruisers currently on the market that have been performing on the IRC scene both inshore and offshore, we felt there was clearly the demand for another boat to fit within this category, particularly one with this much potential.

RACE EVENT ROUND UP R A C E BOA T S

As the summer events draw to a close, it’s fair to say that 2015 has been one of the busiest on the racing calendar for years. The last month alone has seen the Royal Yacht Squadron Bicentenary Regatta, Cowes Week and of course the historic Fastnet Race starting from a frustratingly windless Cowes.

Prior to this the South Coast was graced with the America’s Cup gods with our trusty home team at BAR coming out on top. Having watched the America’s Cup World Series from the enclosure at Southsea, it was so great to be a part of what is now considered a seriously cool sport, rivalling the likes of F1, much to the dismay of the red trouser brigade.

What stood out for me, having seen many high profile sailing events from both the water and shore, was the level of proactivity that these teams were putting into getting sailing out there to the wider audience, free tickets being one of them but also the follow up media work and having the boats metres from the shoreline, flying at 30+ knots, which was pretty refreshing.

The Bicentenary Regatta was the next headline event in the Solent, where the widest array of racing yachts from

the past 100 years were on display.

I personally was out on the MC38 promoting our 2016 circuit where we had a great week on and off the water and in a wide range of conditions. Plenty of breeze in the opening half of the week allowed for some exhilarating and at times rather submarine like sailing and zipping around on the MC38, flying past boats two or three times our size was a real highlight. Needless to say we got a few looks when we returned to the dock with seaweed around our spreaders but the one thing that remained all week was that the crew were smiling from ear to ear each and every day.

Just when the crew had gathered their breath Cowes Week was swiftly upon us with increased class numbers, across the board. It was great to see this event gaining some momentum after a few quiet years. Having two or three new boats in almost every class it is plain to see our sport is slowly but surely getting back to the ‘good old days’ and new boats, both cruiser racers and grand prix designs alike are once again finding their place on UK waters.

After great conditions for the majority of the summer it would of course be fitting to the English weather that the

Fastnet participants were left with a real nightmare of a forecast before setting off on the Rolex Fastnet Race in this, its 90th edition. This flagship event of RORC continues to attract the biggest names in offshore yachting and with some 370 boats participating and the entry list filling up in just 24 minutes, the race organizers are clearly doing a fantastic job of promoting the regatta.

Early winners look to have been coming from the bigger boats this time around but as the breeze (finally) built over the second half of the race the smaller boats have again seized the opportunity for glory.

Ancasta’s final involvement with the race boat world for 2015 will take place at the Southampton Boat Show, where we are hugely excited to be demonstrating the brand new Ker 33 built by McConaghy Boats. She is the first real racer/cruiser from the Ker drawing board and looks set to light up IRC and give the recent French success stories a real run for their money.

If running rigging doesn’t work well, the boat doesn’t perform well. Even if the ropes on your boat are still functional, it’s worth checking that they’re working efficiently. A rope might appear to be doing its job, but life will be much harder than it needs to be if any part of the running rigging is past its prime. Upgrading or replacing it really can transform your sailing.

A ROPE’S LIFE Ropes have a hard life. They’re also affected by UV light, mould and abrasion and wear by clutches, sheaves and around winches. Over time they will degrade and become more difficult to handle and rely upon.

There are things you can do to prolong the useful working life of your running rigging; regular checks for areas of wear will highlight equipment and hardware problems such as damaged or worn clutches, broken sheaves or blocks. The time will come when replacing or upgrading is the sensible option and when you’ve done it, you will probably wonder why you left it so long.

LOOKING AT THE OPTIONS Many boats still have old wire halyards with rope tails but, with the development of modern fibres, we rarely see wire used these days. Prestretched polyester braid is still standard on most smaller cruising yachts – it’s easy to handle and remains the most economical option – while on large cruisers and on race boats it’s often worth upgrading to ropes constructed from improved fibres such as DyneemaTM. These are much lighter and very much stronger than polyester and can be used in certain grades and constructions as a replacement for wire. In all applications DyneemaTM will give measurable performance gains over polyester.

Every rope needs to be chosen in the context of its application, and that’s where talking to the experts is vital. Is water absorption an issue, or is maximum strength more important? Do you require UV resistance, some elongation to reduce damage, and will it be subjected to abrasion?

What about your hardware: will new halyards work with your existing clutches? Can the outer cover be removed to save weight or reinforced to reduce wear? And then what about those vital fittings for the ends – the shackles, blocks and rings? Maybe an upgrade will provide an opportunity for improvement in performance and working life there also.

There’s a lot to think about with running rigging, and talking to the experts at Advanced Rigging is one of the best ways to start.

Earliest records of activity on the River Hamble date back to the Monks at Bishop Waltham who used to set sail from the River Hamble for the Mediterranean and the Middle East from around 720.

In 877 it is recorded that three Viking ships sunk after taking shelter in the river from a storm.

Pirates existed in Hamble around 1572 and a fishing fleet existed from 1606. There are also remains of an Iron Age settlement as well as a Napoleonic gun battery.

At the entrance of the river, Warsash Maritime Academy, now part of Southampton Solent University, is a prominent building on the right.

The academy provides education & training services to the international shipping, commercial yacht, offshore oil, gas and renewable industries.

Whilst boat building works were focused at the top of the river in Bursledon from the early 1300’s, it was not until 1807 when the first boat yard opened at Warsash. This was helped in the main by the new bridge as workers were able to walk around from Bursledon.

Warsash is derived from Warish Asse Feld after donkeys were turned out to graze along the river banks following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. Warsash is now home to the River Hamble Harbour Authority who manage all aspects of the river from the conspicuous black and white building. There are a number of mid stream visitors moorings available as well as a walk ashore pontoon, which also offers a waste pump out facility.

There are three pubs, The Rising Sun on the shore front, The Ferryman and the Silver Fern, along with a number of restaurants. Warsash Sailing Club which, whilst a members club, welcomes visiting yachtsmen and plays host to the annual early season sailing regatta “The Warsash Spring Series”.

The earliest evidence of a river crossing between Warsash and Hamble goes back to 1493 and in 1606 you would be charged 1/2d for a pedestrian

and 1d for a horse to cross the river. The ferry has a long association with the Bugle Pub, in 2002 it was painted pink and can be seen regularly ferrying passengers across the river.

If you are looking to stretch your legs, there is a beautiful walk along a gravelled pathway that can take you from Warsash all the way round to Bursledon.

Opposite Warsash is Hamble Point Marina one of three marinas operated by MDL (Marina Developments Ltd), the others being at Port Hamble and Mercury Yacht Harbour. The marina is fully serviced with visitors berths available and a bar and restaurant on site. It is approximately 1 mile into the centre of Hamble Village.

During the War, Hamble and the surrounding area played a major part in the war effort. It was home to an aircraft training centre and the river was full of landing craft prior to the D Day Landings in 1944.

With the war over, the first mooring piles were driven into the river in 1950, hard now to imagine a river without the thousands of leisure craft we see today.

Hamble Village itself is very picturesque with quaint cobbled streets and a variety of restaurants and bars. Port Hamble Marina is located centrally in the village with plenty of visitors berths and a fuel pontoon operating between 0900 & 1730 each day.

In 1837 the Royal Southern Yacht Club was founded, initially known as the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, it was based in Southampton with a club house opposite the Royal Pier. It’s new club house was opened at the Town Quay in 1846 and remained there until 1934 when it moved to the Hamble. The Royal Southern has enjoyed Royal patronage from

1840 with Queen Victoria, then in 1910 by King George V in succession to the late King Edward VII. The third and oldest surviving sailing club in the village is The Hamble River Sailing Club which was founded in 1919 by seven men from Hamble who used a storage hut in the grounds of the Bugle Pub. An active sailing club, it runs weekly club racing as well as the Garmin Hamble Winter Series.

Adjoining Port Hamble Marina is Hamble Yacht Services. HYS offer a complete range of services, including lift out, boat repairs, maintenance & rigging facilities.

A short journey up river is Mercury Yacht Harbour, originally built by Sir Robin Knox Johnston and favoured by many for its sheltered wooded site, this is the third marina on the river operated by MDL. In 1892 the training ship Mercury was moored nearby.

Known locally as “Noah’s Ark”. TS Mercury was run as a nautical training school for the Royal & Merchant Navies before closing in 1968.

A little further up stream is Universal Marina, just 20 mins from the river entrance it is a family run business set in acres of rural and tranquil surrounds. There are numerous on site businesses able to meet all your boating needs and an excellent bar and restaurant “Bistro 8”.

Since the mid 1300’s Swanwick and Bursledon were the focus for a range of ship

building activities with the last Naval vessel being built in 1813.

In 1786 HMS Elephant was launched, chosen

by Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1801 as his flag ship during the battle of Copenhagen where he is said to have placed his telescope to his blind eye and claimed not to be able to see a signal ordering him to withdraw.

In 1798 the first bridge at Bursledon was built.

In the first year £126 was raised in tolls, by 1815 it raised £2148. Tolls existed until 1930.

In 1827 John Moody, a carpenter who started boat building in his back garden in Swanwick, moved to a parcel of land on the Swanwick shore. His son Alexander joined the business in 1850 where along with his other brother Frederick, they repaired fishing boats and built dinghies. Reginald Moody joined the partnership in 1907. Moody started to build GRP boats in 1965 and continued until 1989.

Set in the upper reaches of the River Hamble Swanwick Marina is currently operated by Premier Marinas.

In 1970 the M27 Motorway bridge was built across the River Hamble and then in 1980’s the BBC TV series “Howards’ Way” helped make the area famous. The Jolly Sailor Pub set on the banks of the river was the setting for many scenes of the hit show. Built in 1750 and owned by the nearby monastery it became a pub around 100 years ago, it is still a favourite

riverside watering hole.

When Francis Deacon returned from the First World War in 1918 he bought a strip of land on the foreshore below the railway and lived in a 70 foot Motor Launch with his wife. This was the start of Deacons boat yard still a thriving yard today with full on site facilities.

Beyond the road and railway bridges lie RK Marine boat yard and then further up the river Eastlands Boat Yard naturally both favoured by those without a mast !!

At the highest navigable point on the River Hamble lies the Horse and Jockey Pub, only accessible at certain times of tide this is a great place to explore by dinghy, kayak or paddle board. Herbert Hall is a ‘Traditional Method’ sparkling wine. It is handmade from low-yield chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier grown organically at the Marden Vineyard in Kent.

On release Herbert Hall was described by the leading wine writer Matthew Jukes as “the finest debut English Sparkling Wine I have ever tasted” Herbert Hall Handmade English Sparkling Wines are regarded as among the finest in the UK and internationally. Since its establishment in 2009 this boutique winery has consistently won the praise of leading wine writers and within just a few years is to be found on wine lists alongside the world’s great wines.

During the Summer of 2007 Nicholas Hall returned to the place of his childhood near the village of Marden in Kent to establish a vineyard and winery. He chose a unique ten-acre parcel of land that has been farmed by his family for four generations, having been originally settled by his greatgrandfather, Herbert Hall, in the 19th Century.

This warm, sheltered site was the first land that Herbert owned and he always maintained that it produced the earliest and best fruit of any site that he ever farmed. Today as a vineyard, with its gravel-seamed clay soil and sunny, south-facing slope,

Herbert’s belief holds true; planted with Chardonnay (40%), Pinot Noir (30%) and Pinot Meunier (30%). The winery produces hand-made, site-specific sparkling wines that express the soil and meso-climate of the vineyard. Nicholas is inspired by the sustainable artisan techniques that his great grandfather would have known and is committed to low-yields and the use of physical labour and manual canopy management rather than chemicals to produce fruit of natural ripeness, intensity and flavour. He named the wine Herbert Hall in honour of his great grandfather.

Alongside Nicholas, the winemaking team comprises Peter Morgan and Kirsty Smith. Together they are concerned with capturing the distinctive quality of the fruit, grown organically in this unique corner of the Garden of England. Herbert Hall wines are typically elegant, with intense fruit on the palate and a fine, silky mousse. Whole-bunch pressing is slow and gentle with cuvée and taille fractions separated by variety.

Temperature controlled primary fermentation takes place in steel tanks with 10% of the chardonnay fermented separately in oak barrels. Cold s tabilisation and blending are carried out during the winter before bottling for secondary fermentation in the Spring. Wine is matured on lees for 18 months before riddling and disgorging. Herbert Hall is a small production, sparkling wine, with each bottle individually hand-dated and initialed on release. It has been one of the English wine industry’s great success stories, earning a place on many of England’s top wine lists and receiving exceptional praise from leading critics.

The winery also makes a special cuvee for HRH The Prince of Wales under the Highgrove Label.
