Welcome to the 32nd Ancasta Collection

What a remarkable end to the year! Firstly, thank you to everyone who joined us at the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Southampton International Boat Show, in September. It was a pleasure to meet you all and show you around some of the very latest yacht launches from Sanlorenzo, Prestige, Beneteau, and Lagoon. We also relished the opportunity to attend the showstopping 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona. Appearing alongside the world’s best sailors competing for sailing’s oldest trophy, we hosted viewings of the McConaghy MC75 at the Barcelona Superyacht Regatta at Real Club Nautico Barcelona (see page 21) and watched the racing up close from the McConaghy hydrogen-powered Chase Zero.

Furthermore, the revolutionary McConaghy-built foiling AC40s showed off their might as they took to the racecourse for the inaugural PUIG Women’s America’s Cup (see page 34). It was such an honour

Reflecting the shipyard’s core commitment to innovation and sustainability, Sanlorenzo has launched two new models in its Yacht range, marking an evolution of their respective lines, the SL86A for the Asymmetrical design and the SP92 for the Smart Performance line.

Allowing for expansive spacious interiors that are entirely customisable through a meticulous 5-stage process that allows complete creative freedom, these two yachts are an attractive blank canvas for out of the box thinkers.

“With demand growing for made to measure yachts here in the UK, we’re thrilled to be introducing the new SL86A and SP92 to our UK client base,” says Nick Hatfield, MD of Sanlorenzo Yachts UK.

“The new models perfectly showcase Sanlorenzo’s artisanal craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology and space-enhancing design, all shaped by the needs of today’s private yacht owner and underlined by the shipyard’s signature Italian sophistication and style.”

Developed in collaboration with Studio Zuccon, the SL86A represents a new evolution in the application of the asymmetrical concept, maximising its potential to create innovative and optimised living solutions while maintaining the elegance and captivating style of Sanlorenzo design.

The main deck is dedicated solely to entertaining and guest conviviality. One of the two external walkways has been repurposed and the staircase connecting the cockpit to the flybridge has been reconsidered to create a larger open living area.

This unique layout affords a spacious aft salon and the option of a dining area at the bow that can be customised to serve as a cinema room or playroom - an additional onboard living space that no other yacht of a similar size can boast.

With the port side deck moved up a level to substantially increase interior volume, the floor to ceiling windows enhance the connection to the sea, while the external spaces have also been enlarged and made more accessible. There are two large sunbathing areas, one at the bow and one integrated into the superstructure, and a minimalistic reconfiguration of the stern conceals the stairs from view but reveals a spacious garage capable of housing a Williams tender and a jet ski.

On the lower deck, the SL86A features four beautifully designed cabins with the owner’s cabin located amidships.

For the interior style, Studio Zuccon returns to the essence of the materials themselves. Not only do the yacht’s configurations incorporate recycled and recyclable materials based on a client’s unique specifications, but the entire SL86A project has involved a detailed hydrodynamic study of the hull to optimise resistance and consequently, consumption and range.

Sanlorenzo celebrates the launch of two new luxury yachts

As the second model in the Smart Performance line, Sanlorenzo’s SP92 reaffirms its commitment to building high-performance, sustainable and sporty boats. From the unique hull geometry to the optimised superstructure design for larger solar panels, everything is aimed at minimising consumption and reducing environmental impact.

Developed in collaboration with Studio Zuccon International Project for the exterior design and architect Piero Lissoni for the interior design, the SP92’s design is inspired by minimalism and clean lines, further enhancing the yacht’s sportiness while maintaining its unparalleled style, elegance, and performance.

Distributed over four levels, the stunning interior features solutions that enhance the spaciousness and usability of the different areas while strengthening the connection to the surrounding seascape. An example of this is the large windows between the interior and the expansive aft deck, which includes a customisable beach area of approximately 45 square metres, perfect for relaxation and family fun on the water.

The first level, which is an extension of the aft cockpit, houses a lounge that can be furnished and tailored to an individual’s taste and style using

composite materials. The higher second level hosts the main living space, with large perimeter windows, one of which is sliding to fully enjoy the connection with the outside. On the third level, a short corridor leads to the impeccable accommodation: the owner’s cabin at the bow, with a full-beam layout, and two twin guest cabins aft on either side, each with an en-suite bathroom.

The SP92 retains the speed and design features of the line - offering a total of 4,000 horsepower with waterjet propulsion as well as the possibility of customisation and a layout that provides essential space elements for clients approaching this size range. All this allows the SP92 to consume about 12-13% less at cruising speed than the same boat built with conventional production processes and traditional materials.

The SP92 will be on display at the Düsseldorf Boat Show, 18-26 January 2025. To book your exclusive tour, contact the expert team at Sanlorenzo Yachts UK via info@sanlorenzoyachts.co.uk or call +44 (0)2380 450 001.

PIONEERING, WORLD FIRST STABILISATION SYSTEM ON NEW BLUEGAME BGM75

Not content with just breaking boundaries, Bluegame is now ripping up the rule book when it comes to onboard comfort and stability.

A brand of Sanlorenzo, Bluegame has partnered with marine stabilisation specialist, Smartgyro to achieve a world first in stabilisation onboard its BGM75 catamaran a multihull yacht featuring two synchronised stabilisers - setting a new benchmark in stability and performance.

While multihulls are naturally stable, monohulls have gained popularity because they often include stabilisers. Recognising the growing demand for increased comfort and stability onboard, Bluegame decided to take on the challenge of equipping the BGM75 with advanced Smartgyro SG80 stabilisers - setting the ambitious goal of matching, or even surpassing, the comfort levels of stabilised monohulls.

This was a groundbreaking endeavour: stabilising multihulled vessels is notoriously complex due to their shape and the physics involved. No specific mathematical model for catamarans existed to back up whether the concept would work so the project meant Smartgyro’s Research & Development (R&D) team had to first investigate the technical aspects of how two gyroscopes could be installed and effectively operate in parallel within the two hulls of the catamaran.

“Understanding the high standards of our expert and sophisticated clientele, we were resolute in pursuing this project, confident that it would surpass their expectations for comfort,” says Carla Demaria, CEO of Bluegame. “We recognized the complexity of stabilising two hulls in parallel, a challenge no one had tackled before.

“Smartgyro’s proven expertise and innovative approach instilled in us the confidence we needed. This has been a truly collaborative effort, with both teams working seamlessly together, enhancing each other’s strengths.”

The final results are excellent, with this game changing collaboration set to redefine the yachting experience. Granting significant roll reduction in comparison to a non-stabilised multihull, the new stabilisers on the BGM75 afford onboard comfort comparable to a stabilised monohull yacht.

First and foremost, the award-winning BGM75 is a luxurious motor yacht that ‘by chance’ has two hulls not one. It stands apart from other catamarans on the market, owing to its sleek silhouette and reduced length-to-width ratio. The closer proximity of the two hulls allows for a seamless lower deck and a full beam owner’s cabin, an unprecedented feature for a twin-hulled yacht.

This is a yacht that has even the most loyal monohull enthusiasts taking a second glance. Lightweight, manoeuvrable, and spacious, the Bluegame BGM75 is the perfect boat for rebellious spirits who still desire maximum comfort afloat.

The M48 is optimised for cruising speeds of between 8 and 18 knots, with propulsion from 2 x 320 HP engines. WORLD LAUNCH

Ocean Globe Race Experience with Lucy Frost

Experienced and friendly, the Ancasta team is passionate about all things boating and none more so than our Front of House and New Boat Sales Administrator Lucy Frost.

Lucy joined Ancasta after competing in the 2023 Ocean Globe Race – an eight-month, round-the-world sailing adventure aboard pre-1988 yachts, navigating without any modern technology. This extraordinary event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first Whitbread Round the World Race, honouring the spirit of traditional ocean racing. Here, Lucy shares with us her account of this unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Before you set sail, had you always wanted to complete a circumnavigation?

The short answer is no. I learnt to sail dinghies in my teens, but I never really got into ‘big boat’ sailing until a sabbatical in Australia. I completed a yachtmaster course before joining a three-man delivery crew on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 54DS from the BVIs to Marseille. I fell in love with the abandonment of the open ocean, so I signed up for two legs of the Clipper Race, and three months and 12,000 nmiles later, I was wondering what else was out there.

How did you hear about the Ocean Globe Race and what inspired you to take part?

Early in 2021, a good friend, Campbell Mackie, shared a video about the OGR and asked if I wanted to take part. The thought of going where few people have ever sailed was thrilling. By then I had over 40,000 nmiles experience so I was excited at the thought of following in the wake of my heroes. I didn’t have any doubts, just excitement.

You raced on a Baltic 55 in the Adventure Class, how did you get a place on this team?

I was in it from the beginning, the fourth member of the team, but we needed a boat. The entry requirements stated the boat must have already competed in a Whitbread Race. We eventually found her, S/V Outlaw, in a yard in Albany, America. She’d previously raced as Equity & Law in 1985/6 with a Dutch team.

Did you know any of your crew mates before you started?

Aside from Campbell, no. We decided on a core of 10 ‘round-theworlders’ and then a ‘one-legger’ on each leg, so a total of 14 crew. We had six Clipper alumni on board, the other eight we interviewed, with a couple of late changes.

Did you sail together much before the race?

The very first time we all came together was a week before Outlaw was ready to sail from the US to the UK. That trip was certainly a leap of faith; Outlaw had only been in the water for a few weeks, the rig had been fitted only days earlier and to sail such a distance, with all the crew getting to know each other, was a big endeavour.

What

were conditions like onboard during the race?

Conditions were good. We all had our own beds rather than the usual hot-bunking. The six-hourly daytime and four-hourly nighttime watch systems worked well. We also had a rota for cooking, with cleaning done by another. The cook would step out of the usual watch at 5.30am, feed us breakfast, lunch and dinner and then sleep for a full night, to rejoin their watch at the appropriate time.

Which leg of the race was your favourite, and why?

Undoubtedly the third leg, when we rounded the elusive Cape Horn. The arrival in Punta del Este, Uruguay was one of elation and sheer exhaustion.

What was the highlight of the race for you?

Rounding Cape Horn! Now I’m home it seems surreal. I effectively sailed around the world for an experience that lasted just a few hours, but it was so worth it. We had ideal conditions, huge following seas in 45-50 knots, dolphins with us that morning, an albatross circling us and it was in daylight. It was absolutely electrifying – it’s what the whole race was driven by, and we’d made it.

As the race rules prohibited post 1973 technology onboard, were you able to take any ‘luxury’ items at all?

Luxury items were books (no Kindles allowed!), and personal cassette players, meaning you could play music in bed without distracting others off-watch. The biggest luxury was our mobile phones and laptops getting locked away – weeks of no emails or social media, pure bliss!

Would you do it again?

Racing? NO! But I’d highly recommend it! One day, I’m hoping to explore around the world with my husband, at a more leisurely pace, and with many more stopovers.

What would your advice be to anyone wanting to complete a similar challenge?

Do it, you’ll never regret it, but do the whole thing. You only live once and you’ll only regret the things you didn’t do.

FOR YOUNG CANCER SURVIVORS

“Oh my God. How are we here right now?”
Sailing helped change Sophie’s life after cancer this summer. Supporting the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust can do the same for more young people like Sophie. This is her story.

Sophie never imagined she would be here, on the Solent, at the helm of one of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s yachts. It never crossed the 20-year-old’s mind while living in Warwickshire she would one day be sailing around the Isle of Wight.

Not when she was having chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (a type of blood cancer that affects white blood cells), not when she lost her hair, and not when she was lying in a hospital bed in her family’s living room.

“Treatment is so hard,” she says, “and hospitals are so lonely. Then I got sepsis from COVID. I couldn’t walk or talk or do anything for myself. I had a wheelchair and took a long time to recover. That was really difficult.”

Since finishing her treatment two years ago, she has required ongoing reconstructive surgeries for her face, and regularly gets stares or comments when she’s out and about.

Freedom at sea

A Teenage Cancer Trust Youth Support Coordinator at her hospital recommended signing up for a four-day Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust sailing trip and showed Sophie how to apply.

The national charity takes young cancer survivors aged 8-24(ish) on sailing and outdoor adventures to inspire them to believe in a brighter future after their treatment ends.

Sophie was sceptical at first: “I was like, ‘I don’t really know how I’m going to feel more confident on a boat’. Do you know what I mean?” The thought of sharing a confined space with other young people she had never met before was scary too. What if she struggled to bond with them, or they were judgemental like others are?

But they clicked. Everyone on the boat quickly grew close, playing boardgames on deck, sharing stories and just laughing again. Nothing could have been better than sailing for Sophie to put the memory of hospitals behind her.

“You’re not in a pressurised room, there aren’t windows separating you from the outdoors. You are in the fresh air among nature, no four walls, completely immersed.

“I volunteered for everything, and I wanted to learn more because of how nicely everyone teaches you. Even just doing the ropes, and the rush of heeling side-to-side, it really builds your confidence.

“Being on a boat when you don’t know anything about sailing is a big thing to take on. But you learn. I was like, ‘oh my God, I am on a boat, and I am doing it!’”

SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE

Give more young people like Sophie the chance to believe in a brighter future after cancer in 2025.

Having cancer is the darkest point in a young person’s life. Life goes on hold at the time you should be at your most adventurous and vibrant.

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s life-changing sailing and outdoor adventures give young people back the hope, joy and light that cancer stripped away.

You can help bring brighter days to more young people next summer by donating to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust at ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org/donate or at the QR code.

Grateful to be alive

She describes the environment on board as nurturing: everyone looked out for one another, pitched in to help with the day-to-day jobs, and encouraged each other to get involved. No one made comments about her appearance, and when she spoke about it, her other young crewmates empathised with how she felt.

She said: “We’ve all got cancer in common, but more than that, we all just found each other on the boat. It was instant friendship. We all had a really big interest in sailing too. That really helped because we could do everything together and learn together as well.”

Sophie could not believe how far she had come. From not being able to walk to sitting on the bow of a yacht sailing it around the Solent.

“It’s lovely to know positives can come out of such a horrible thing. It has filled me with so much joy that I have come so far from my treatment to my recovery. It has made me feel really grateful to be alive and to be here.”

Wrapping Up the In-Boom Furling Market

In recent years, furling mainsail solutions have been gaining popularity, and in-boom systems, in particular, have become considerably more refined. Whether specified on a new boat commission or retrofitted to an older yacht, the investment in an in-boom system for owners is certainly worthy of consideration for safety, comfort and practicality reasons. Here, we look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of in-boom furling systems and a selection of the industry-leading models available from Advanced Rigging & Hydraulics.

Advantages of In-boom Furling

One major attraction is the ease of sail handling provided by an in-boom furling system. Reefing is less restricted, providing greater flexibility and control over the sail area. Handling the mainsail entirely from the cockpit is an attractive option for those cruising short-handed. Unlike in-mast furling, all mechanical elements can be reached from the deck, assisting with inspections, servicing and repairs without the need to go up the mast.

A better sail shape is possible as in-boom furling systems can accommodate full-length battens, providing much better sailing performance than using a more restrictive in-mast option. In-boom furling systems are also less prone to jamming than in-mast setups, as they are unaffected by vertical winding constraints. If there is a mechanical failure, the sail can still be lowered and handled manually, unlike in-mast systems where a jam could leave a sail stuck. When furled, all the weight of the sail is lower in the boat for better stability and boat handling.

In-boom furling systems also offer good protection and convenient stowage for the yacht’s sail. The sail rolls neatly into the boom, avoiding the bulk of traditional sail covers or wrestling with flaking and securing sails manually. This also protects the sails from the elements.

Some of the drawbacks

Of course, there are some considerations to be accounted for as you weigh up if an in-boom furling system is right for you and your boat. It is vital that the system is installed correctly and if you are retrofitting a furling boom system to your existing yacht, do take professional advice – our team at Advanced Rigging & Hydraulics will be pleased to help. Many problems we see with systems tend to be down to poor installation; seeking professional guidance bespoke to your yacht will help mitigate this, and any resulting issues.

Knowing how to handle your in-boom furling system is important too, and just like any other equipment on board your boat, understanding how to properly use it will minimise damage. After fitting in-boom furling, it’s important to spend time checking and, if necessary, refining the set-up. It’s worth getting the sailmaker and rigger who installs the system to collaborate on this and demonstrate how to use the system as configured for your boat on a sea trial.

Expense is another consideration to weigh up with systems incorporating the components of a boom, vang, and winch configuration, suitable for in-boom furling. Owners looking at retrofitting will also need to factor in the cost of a new mainsail.

MAINFURL

The creators of Mainfurl set out to revolutionise the furling boom industry with a focus on making safe, reliable and elegant furling booms that are also available for smaller yachts. Founded in 2019, the first solutions targeted boats in the 40ft to 60ft size range, quickly building links with the world’s major spar-makers whose products are typically aimed at the 55-foot-plus market. They now have eight boom moulds, which enables them to select a mould that is ideally sized for boats ranging from 35ft all the way up to 90ft.

Booms of any size can be made from either fibreglass or carbon fibre, with the carbon fibre option equalling the weight of a non-furling aluminium boom and the glassfibre adding about 20 per cent of the total boom weight. Each boom is custom-made to order, with reinforcements added internally wherever needed to take loads from the mainsheet or any other attachments. As a result, a Mainfurl boom can be retrofitted to any existing boat. The systems are particularly well suited to multihulls that often have booms fitted high above the deck, such as many cruising catamarans, but the product is slim enough that it doesn’t look out of place on sportier boats.

The furling boom comes with a unique furling system, either in a manual version with an endless reefing line or as an electric version with a Reckmann BFE motor built into the mandrel. The electric system is operated with pushbuttons, and whether the system is manual or electric, you operate it from the cockpit, which makes the boom safe and easy to handle.

If the wind increases and you need to reef the mainsail, you can easily furl the main to one of the battens, so the batten is right under the mandrel specifically designed with ease of use and safety in mind.

LEISUREFURL

The Leisurefurl boom is world-renowned for its reliability, quality, and ease of use. The design is simple but effective and is a popular option for its ease of integration with conventional fittings, available from Made Engineered and manufactured in Holland.

Again, a range of sizes are available suitable for different yachts, and booms are manufactured using high-strength rolled aluminium plates (5083 H111), which produce a very elegant shape together with the required structural stiffness for heavy weather use.

Special features such as the integral sail cover, open boom front to prevent chafe of the luff tape and the use of conventional style fittings for vang, mainsheet and preventer eyes, ensure reliability and full integration with existing boom hardware and blocks.

HI-LOW REEFER

For smaller yachts where the owner is perhaps looking for a simple system to enable easier sail handling, if single-handed or short-crewed, the Hi-Low reefer from Danish manufacturer John Mast is worth consideration.

It is ideal for retrofitting to almost any yacht and is suitable for most types of sailing boat from 20 – 40’ in overall length. It is quick and easy to fit without the need for un-stepping the mast.

As with other systems, the sail is protected when stowed to limit degradation, and this system is popular for its affordability and reliability when properly installed and maintained.

Why a Rig Inspection is Essential for Your Yacht

Your yacht’s rigging is the backbone of your sailing experience, ensuring performance, safety, and reliability on the water. Whether you’re preparing for a busy summer season or keeping your vessel in top condition during downtime, a professional rig inspection is a smart investment. Rigging failures can be expensive, hazardous to crew safety, and may result in damage to your boat and surrounding vessels. Identifying weak points early and addressing them with professional repairs helps prevent failure. Maintaining your rigging is also essential for standard yacht insurance policies, which often stipulate that the rig remains seaworthy and in good condition.

The Importance of Regular Rig Inspections

Even if your yacht hasn’t been used extensively or has been stored ashore, the rigging remains under stress. Wind, movement, and the natural forces of time can cause wear, even in the most robust systems.

Boats of any age and size can be affected, and often, inspections can be overlooked until the damage has become a major failure. Common issues include:

• Fractures or Cracks: These can develop in terminals and fittings due to fatigue.

• Corrosion: Saltwater exposure accelerates the decline of metal components.

Routine inspections identify these weak points before they become costly or dangerous failures.

What to Expect from a Professional Rig Inspection

We provide comprehensive mast and rigging inspections, covering the Isle of Wight and the South Coast. Here’s what our service includes:

Thorough Examination

We inspect all running and standing rigging, including all termination points and associated hardware such as blocks, spreaders, furlers and headsail foils.

Detailed Reporting

On completion, you’ll receive a comprehensive report with a breakdown of findings, maintenance recommendations, and a record for future reference.

Expert Advice

Our team offers tailored guidance on repairs, replacements, and upgrades to keep your rig safe and seaworthy.

Rig Inspection Services

Specialised Services: NDT Testing

For rod rigging, we use Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to detect hidden damage. This involves applying a dye that highlights cracks, allowing us to pinpoint any structural weaknesses. Early detection through NDT can prevent catastrophic failures, and following a manufacturer’s service guidelines will help you manage the integrity of your rigging.

The Benefits of Regular Rigging Maintenance: Safety First

Rig failures can endanger your crew and cause significant damage to your yacht and nearby vessels. Regular inspections reduce these risks dramatically. Save on Costs

Proactive maintenance is far less expensive than emergency repairs or full rig replacements after a failure.

Insurance Compliance

Most yacht insurance policies require proof of seaworthiness. Regular rig checks ensure you meet these standards, avoiding potential claim disputes.

Get Ready for the Sailing Season

Don’t let preventable rigging issues ruin your sailing plans. A professional rig inspection ensures your yacht is ready for a safe, enjoyable season on the water.

AC40s make history at the inaugural Women’s Americas Cup

This summer, we saw the very first Puig Women’s America’s Cup take off - quite literally! Teams representing twelve nations crewed by the world’s best female sailors raced one-design AC40 foiling yachts built by McConaghy Boats for the coveted new trophy. High speed, high adrenalin and the highest level of skill were all on show.

Although new, the event was a highlight of the iconic America’s Cup and a huge success, with crowds gathering on the sun-drenched shoreline of Barcelona to watch the action or tuning in at home to follow the racing through the online live feed.

Crews of four rockstar sailors raced the high-tech AC40s in two fleets of six in a round-robin format on windward-leeward courses. Despite a wide range of testing conditions, with the breeze oscillating from the lightest breath of wind to hefty gusts of 20+ knots, the racing was incredibly close and exciting to watch – the boats came within just a few metres of one another at blistering speed, the teams showed off their skills with impressive tacks and gybes on the foils, and there were a few spectacular nosedives in big waves – going from 40kts to 4kts is quite impressive to watch and it’s even

more impressive to see the AC40 Yachts take it in their stride.

In the end, after a week of highly contested racing, the final match race came down to the wire with top contenders from the UK and Italy vying for first place in an intense, sudden winner-takes-all scenario – Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli took overall victory by just 8 seconds.

The ground-breaking AC40s have set a high-octane benchmark for the future of women’s sailing in the America’s Cup and it has now been announced the AC40 will have a key involvement in the 38th edition of the America’s Cup for both Women and the cup teams themselves.

McConaghy Boats Prowess

The AC40, built by McConaghy Boats, is a scaled-down version of the AC75 America’s Cup boats. Underpinned by over 50 years’ boat building experience and consistently at the forefront of composite technology, McConaghy Boats’ dedication to excellence across its range of high-performance racing yachts, fully customisable luxury multihulls and powercats is unparalleled.

With top speeds close to 50 knots on the water, the AC40 OneDesign foiling monohull can withstand loads and stresses that would have been unthinkable in a 40-foot yacht a few years ago. Battery power replaces the need for multiple grinders, and with a self-tacking headsail, the yacht is sailed by just two helms and two trimmers, while an autopilot control system maintains stable flight so the crews can focus purely on speed and tactics.

The Women’s, Youth and Americas Cup crews all devoted significant time training in AC40 simulators to familiarise themselves with the controls before showcasing the boat’s phenomenal performance on the water – foiling at speed with finesse, balanced manouveres, and strategic racing that was just as fun for those watching as the sailors.

Opportunity to Fly

If you want a piece of the action, flying across the water at adrenaline-inducing speeds is now possible for yacht racing thrill-seekers.

The AC40 is available to purchase from Ancasta Race Boats in partnership with McConaghy Boats and Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ). Embrace cutting-edge technology and performance synonymous with the America’s Cup for the first time in sailing history.

With the AC40 having a long term place in our sport, the first private build contract signed, and a race series penned for 2025 in Europe, this is the right time for the AC40 Class to become the pinnacle of One Design, foiling racing.

The Admiral’s Cup

Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club

17th July to 1st August 2025 Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK

Since its inception in 1957, the Admiral’s Cup has held a prestigious status as the unofficial offshore racing world cup. After a hiatus of 22 years, this legendary event will now return in 2025.

At the time of writing, 18 yachts forming nine teams, representing major international yacht clubs have entered, with more expected to follow, so it’s shaping up to be a momentous comeback. Many of the best sailors in the world will go head-to-head in a two-week series of inshore and offshore courses, culminating in the gruelling Rolex Fastnet Race.

Throughout its illustrious history, teams representing Great Britain have garnered the most success, securing the coveted trophy on nine occasions. Germany has achieved four victories, while the USA and Australia have each triumphed three times, with Australia currently holding the esteemed trophy. France, Italy, the Netherlands, and New Zealand have also celebrated victories in the Admiral’s Cup, showcasing the global reach and competitiveness of the event.

IRC Classes

The Admiral’s Cup Class IRC rating bands and length ranges are designed to allow as many boat types as possible to compete at the event. These parameters also ensure that racing remains competitive and intense, particularly during the longer offshore races, and address the topography constraints of racing in the Solent and adjacent waters.

Admiral’s Cup Class 1

• Boats ranging from 44ft, (13.41m) up to 56ft (17.20m)

• IRC TCC 1.335 - 1.464

• The Carkeek 46, Cookson 50 and highly competitive IRC 52/ TP 52 are good examples.

Admiral’s Cup Class 2

• Boats ranging from 36ft (11.00m) up to 44ft (13.40m)

• IRC TCC 1.176 - 1.276

• Boats such as the MAT 1340, FAST 40 and IC37 would fit the parameters.

Crew

There are no limitations on professional crew, but RORC continues their drive for inclusivity by allowing one extra crew member, in addition to the boat’s IRC capacity, if a boat sails with two women or two under 25-year-olds, or a combination of the two.

“The RORC Race Team eagerly awaits the arrival of teams from across the globe for the Admiral’s Cup. With meticulous measurement and scrutinisation set to take place before the series begins, our dedicated Race Management Team is prepared to deliver a fair and challenging competition. To enhance the excitement on the water, we’ve organised a vibrant social programme centred around the newly modernised RORC Cowes Clubhouse. The Admiral’s Cup is shaping up to be an unforgettable event!”

IMOCA 60 ADVENS1

FOR SALE

On 10 November 2024, 40 courageous skippers set off from the fan-packed shorelines of Les Sables d’Olonne in France to cross the start line of the iconic Vendee Globe. This epic non-stop, no outside assistance, solo round the world race sailing West to East via the three Capes, is the toughest sailing race on the planet.

Having already won the IMOCA Globe series in 2023 with Sam Goodchild at the helm, it’s no wonder this fantastic duo is establishing a firm position at the front of the pack again. A 2019 Guillaume Verdier design, this IMOCA 60 is, without question, one of the most competitive boats in the fleet with thousands of design, engineering and optimisation hours invested to get it to the very front of the fleet of the world’s most famous offshore fleet.

Managed and campaigned by the TRR team (Thomas Ruyant Racing Team), ADVENS 1 is a highly professional outfit in every sense. This boat is not only proven as a single handed machine, both in the hands of Thomas Ruyant when she was known as LINKED OUT and more recently as FOR THE PLANET with Sam Goodchild, but has also taken wins in double handed races and, as a “fully crewed” boat during the last OCEAN RACE EUROPE event.

Exclusively for sale with Ancasta Race boats, ADVENS 1 will be available for a handover after the 2024 Vendee Globe.

Partnership between titans of design brings iconic onwater lifestyle to London

Distinguished Italian yacht builder Sanlorenzo and British interiors visionary Linley partnered during Art Frieze (9-13 October) to push the boundaries of design and bring the iconic luxury on-water lifestyle to London.

Taking place during a week where the world’s most esteemed artists collaborate for activations across London, the exterior of Linley’s flagship Belgravia studio was reimagined with a dramatic blue grass seascape with two emerging whale tales to highlight Sanlorenzo’s commitment to the environment and its unwavering drive towards decarbonisation in yachting.

Once inside, guests were welcomed ‘onboard’ where the signature Sanlorenzo style and elegance was evoked to present the creative inspiration for envisioning their own floating masterpiece.

“Over the last year, Sanlorenzo has seen growing demand for bespoke yachts from UK clients, and Linley gave us a unique opportunity to truly showcase the Sanlorenzo brand to UK customers in a captivating and engaging way,” says Nick Hatfield, MD of Sanlorenzo Yachts UK.

“For six decades, this Italian shipyard has created made to measure yachts that reflect the individual personalities of their owners. Like Linley’s exquisite pieces, each yacht is a unique work of art with its own story to tell.’

Inspiring. Illuminating. Intriguing.

To augment the immersive experience and celebrate the magnificent collaboration between these two titans of design, an ingeniously orchestrated series of exclusive evening events paid further homage to all things art and the artists who create it.

Special guests came together for an evening in conversation with two extremely talented British artists, abstract painter Bob Aldous and sculptor Alice Andrea Ewing, who shared incredible insights into their artistic process and the inspiration that drives such creativity. This fun and informative evening was expertly moderated by art historian and founder of ArtOnSuperyachts.com, Pandora Mather-Lees.

The world of haute couture also breezed through the doors of Linley’s showroom as, hot off the runways of Milan Fashion week, Italian fashion house Del Core introduced its

incredible FW24/25 collection in London for the first time. This intimate trunk show was the perfect setting for those with an unparalleled sense of style to discover the contemporary sophistication of what will be a la mode onboard next year.

At a Glance: Sanlorenzo’s Green Methanol Fuel Cell System

In May 2024, Sanlorenzo reached a significant milestone in its journey towards carbon neutrality with the launch of its 50Steel - the first superyacht delivered with a Green Methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system, capable of powering the onboard hotel systems with zero emissions.

This sounds extremely impressive, and it is, but what is this radical innovation?

Cutting edge technology

Developed in collaboration with Siemens Energy, the Green Methanol Fuel Cell System transforms green methanol into hydrogen and then into electrical energy to power all the yacht’s hotel systems without storing hydrogen on board.

This revolutionary solution will allow the yacht to generate electrical energy up to a maximum of 100kW, with propulsion engines and diesel generators turned off. The completely carbon-neutral system significantly increases the time that can be spent at anchor without diesel fuel consumption and with zero emissions.

With this development, Sanlorenzo has decided to focus on reducing emissions while at anchor as careful monitoring of onboard usage data has shown that for 90% of the time a yacht is stationary, with navigation dedicated to the remaining 10%.

Leading the way when it comes to the IMO’s requirement to reduce emissions by 20% starting from 2030, the introduction of Sanlorenzo’s new system allows for a 20-30% reduction in emissions annually.

Why green methanol

Currently, methanol is among the most effective fuels for replacing diesel, as it is already available in more than 100 ports worldwide.

Sanlorenzo is using green methanol for its new system, which is produced using exclusively renewable energy sources and carbon dioxide captured

from the atmosphere through an aptly named carbon capture system - the amount of CO2 released into the air during the combustion process equals that removed from the environment to produce green methanol, allowing for a circular and completely carbon-neutral system.

Green methanol therefore emerges as a valid candidate in replacing more polluting substances such as ammonia, diesel, or liquefied natural gas.

How it works

The modular Fuel Cell system consists of a Reformer capable of transforming green methanol into hydrogen and simultaneously, through the Fuel Cells, powering all hotel systems without storing hydrogen on board.

This transformation occurs at normal pressure conditions and at a slightly higher temperature than a traditional Fuel Cell, which means there are no particular safety issues.

As a byproduct, the fuel cell only generates water vapour, which is not released into the atmosphere but rather, through a condenser, converted back into water. This is then reused to produce the mixture for the fuel cell, composed of 60% methanol and 40% water.

The energy produced by the Fuel Cells is not stored but used immediately. The system consists of 20 modules, each generating 5 kW, for a total of 100 kW. Therefore, the system does not involve the combined use of diesel generators.

Simply put, the Fuel Cell system completes two processes:

• Transformation of distilled water and methanol into hydrogen

• Transformation of hydrogen into electrical energy.

The Fuel Cell reformer system will enable the indirect loading of methanol instead of hydrogen, storing the same amount of energy on board in a much smaller space, reducing the limitations imposed by the risks of storing and using pure hydrogen.

And not content with this innovation, Sanlorenzo has just unveiled its LIFE MYSTIC project which aims to build the first green methanol bi-fuel superyacht to further reduce the environmental impact of yachting.

New Prestige 520 Commissioning and Upgrades

Working closely with the Ancasta Yacht Services Commissioning Team, the couple transformed their Prestige 520 into a one-of-a-kind yacht, fitting it out with advanced technology and some well thought out modifications.

After the AYS team carried out the transformative commissioning process in Hamble, the yacht was shipped to Mallorca, ready to embark on unforgettable journeys around the stunning Balearic Islands.

Onboard Internet

Staying connected while onboard was an absolute priority. Some systems work well close to shore, but we needed to design a system giving an uninterrupted service. To achieve this, we installed both Pepwave for cost effective inshore connectivity and Starlink Maritime which leverages a vast network of satellites for offshore passages.

This combination not only allows the yacht to serve as an office when needed but also offers unlimited access to online TV streaming and entertainment, whether docked in a marina or navigating long ocean passages. Smart TVs were also fitted throughout with lifting mechanisms and the ability to mirror tablets and phones for conference calls.

Assisted Docking Technology

Engineering Solutions

From their in-depth research the owners had very clear ideas about the enhancements they needed. For this, their dedicated AYS Client Project Manager offered various options, and a detailed specification was agreed upon. This included a hydraulic passerelle for improved access when stern to, a Seakeeper to improve stability at sea or at anchor, a Watermaker to avoid reliance on marina supply (not always advisable in some locations), and secondary fuel filters offering finer filtration.

For increased security we fitted Seanapps sensors to the aft and side doors, which will send a notification to the App if a door is opened. Sensors have also been fitted to the shore power reporting any breaks in supply, and also to the tender sending an alert if it’s removed from the vessel. The remote boat monitoring Seanapps system is fitted as standard to all Prestige Yachts, and with a few additional upgrades this will give the owners peace of mind at all times.

Functional Storage Enhancements

When Lord and Lady Codrington purchased their new Prestige 520 with Ancasta, they had a clear concept of a yacht that would reflect their own personal style, with a luxury boutique hotel aesthetic and enhanced systems to maximise comfort onboard. tight spaces. access to the chest.

Effortless docking was an essential upgrade onboard this new Prestige 520. The owners wanted to remove the stress of berthing in crowded marinas, especially when there are just the two of them onboard. We fitted a state-of-the-art Assisted Docking System by Volvo Penta which is the next generation of marine automation. Also available as a retrofit, this clever boat docking system allows the vessel to hold a fixed position in the water counteracting the effects of wind and tide, simplifying docking and maneuverability in

The aft crew cabin required some well thought out, bespoke storage solutions. With input from our experienced team of shipwrights, every item of sports equipment (including wake boards, skis and fishing gear), a portable electric cool box, and a comprehensive set of engine and equipment spare parts, now have dedicated and secure stowage positions.

Our team also sourced and mounted a large tool chest in the engine room filled with an impressive array of tools for every eventuality, hinging the compartment entry ladder for easier

Interior Modifications

The interior was the area where the owners brought their considerable knowledge and experience from working with high-end luxury boutique hotels to the design process. Special touches include heated vertical towel rails with matching fascia to hide the power supply ensuring dry towels and robes at all times, a modified bifold shower door enhancing access and usability, and the thought process even extended to additional toothbrush holders and hooks.

Galley upgrades included a water filtration system with an additional faucet for drinking water, a dishwasher, and a clever cabinetry modification to the central island to allow access from both sides.

New Boat commissioning with AYS

When you purchase a new yacht from Ancasta, Ancasta Yacht Services is dedicated to tailoring your vessel to suit your lifestyle and boating needs. Whether you want WiFi connectivity, solar panels and lithium storage, stabilisers or personalised boat name graphics, we can optimise the configuration and layout to make your yacht truly yours.

Our skilled technicians will personally receive your yacht upon delivery, conduct a meticulous inspection, and manage the final commissioning process to ensure everything is perfect. This period can be extended to allow for full customisation which more and more owners request. During this commissioning period we sea trial the vessel and all systems fitted, making any adjustments needed before an in-depth pre-handover valet.

Finally, once your yacht is fully prepared, you’ll be invited to join us for a comprehensive handover on board. Together, we’ll review every system, and confirm all upgrades and modifications, with our team on hand to guide you through the completion paperwork. Once completed, the keys will be yours as you embark on your new adventures. But our support does not end here - our dedicated Aftersales team remain on hand to support you with technical queries and advice for the lifetime of your ownership.

We had already chosen the Prestige 520 and 590 as our preferred layout of all the brands. The individual access to the Master Suite and excellent space in the saloon, galley, cockpit and fly, had convinced us that the Prestige model offered a lot for its cubic feet size and finished product quality.

We wanted to spec out the boat to a standard that would allow our family and friends to enjoy themselves as though it was their boat. We thought through everything we could and upgraded where we could, and added subtle touches where we could.

We can’t highlight enough about the Ancasta team in Hamble-le-Rice. The sales team are excellent, they are persistent but not pushy, not in your face, not got to close the deal by 5pm on Friday, but from our experience and watching them engage with our customers, they are in the business of long term relationships and want you to come back and upgrade to the next model when your time is right to do so.

The after-sale commissioning team are exemplary with their customer service. Nothing was too much, and with their help, guidance and hard work, we’ve ended up with, in their words, ‘the best F520’ in the world.

The handover to a new owner was detailed, thorough and smooth. Oh Mio Merluzzo’s home will be in the Mediterranean and she is currently berthed in Alcudiamar, Mallorca. The Ancasta team in Alcudia have been very helpful and welcoming to a new F520 into the marina there.

All of this culminates with the end result being a very special and a much-loved boat.

With our thanks to the whole Ancasta team.

How to enhance your boat in 2025

The winter offseason can feel dreary as you long for the warmer months to come around again and you can get back out on the water. But instead of counting down the days until the new boating season starts, why not embrace this downtime and let us give your boat some TLC so it’s all plain sailing when Spring arrives.

Now is the best time to iron out any little issues you’ve been ignoring or to make those modifications that you’ve been promising yourself and your crew. By taking the time to focus on maintenance, refit and repairs, you can enhance your boat’s performance, safety and overall comfort, as well as protect your investment. Looking for some inspiration? Here are some tips from Mandy Boughton, Managing Director at Ancasta Yacht Services, on the best ways to improve your boat for an enjoyable season on the water in 2025.

Hull Maintenance and Repairs

Winter provides the perfect opportunity to haul your boat out of the water and inspect the hull for problems that may have arisen during the season. After a thorough clean, we check for blisters, cracks and any other damage before carrying out any necessary repairs – catching issues before they become more problematic is vital and saves costs in the long run.

Regular antifouling is crucial to protect the hull from barnacles, slime and weeds, and, when combined with a mid-season washdown, it will ensure your clean hull delivers the best performance on the water. Checking anodes once or ideally twice a year is essential, some marine environments result in faster wear than others. Replacing anodes when they are less than 50% of their original size will prevent corrosion on through-hull fittings, trim tabs, lifting gear, engines and sail drives. Spotting early signs of corrosion is essential maintenance.

And don’t forget to polish the topsides. UV damage and the build-up of salt and grime can damage the paint and cause fading over time. At AYS, we take a comprehensive approach to this, cutting back the gelcoat with a cleaning compound before buffing it to a glossy finish and applying a protective wax.

Engine Servicing, Repower and Installation

Engine servicing during the winter months is one of the most important jobs when it comes to ensuring your boat starts first time and runs smoothly in the spring. Plus, a comprehensive professional service will help prevent breakdowns on the water and extend the lifespan of your engine.

If your boat felt underpowered this year, you might consider upgrading the engine to a larger or more fuel-efficient model. This is a great time of year to get this done to avoid downtime during the precious summer months. AYS are Approved Dealers and Service Centres for Volvo, Yanmar and Nanni and we’re always happy to discuss the most cost-effective solution for your boat.

If a complete repower is out of reach, a propeller upgrade can help improve performance, speed, handling and fuel efficiency.

Batteries and Power Management

As we load our boats with an ever-increasing repertoire of appliances and technology, it’s important that onboard power systems are maintained to keep everything in good working order.

As a minimum, you need to look after the boat’s batteries – clean the terminals, check the voltage, and store them in a cool dry place during the winter to avoid power outages.

If you’ve been experiencing power trips on your boat this year, this downtime is a good opportunity to upgrade your systems to cope with the demand. With the advancement of sustainable power generation and management options, we have a fantastic range of options to ensure you have a reliable source of power onboard.

Onboard Living Upgrades

Onboard comfort is paramount whether you’re day cruising with family friends, sailing further afield, or competing on the racecourse.

With the weather being ever more unpredictable worldwide, efficient onboard heating and air conditioning systems are becoming essential, and bespoke canvas covers are great for rain and sun protection on deck.

Bow thrusters are a popular upgrade for owners wanting to remove some of the stress of berthing, especially when sailing short-handed. As the UK Distributor for Jet Thruster and Approved Gold Installers for Lewmar, we have an experienced team of boat builders who can install a range of thruster options, including jets, tunnels, and retractable options.

Smaller items like heated towel rails, improved seating configurations, re-upholstery, and upgraded refrigeration can all make a huge difference to onboard living, especially if you’re planning extended, multi-day trips. And improved storage solutions ensure you can take everything you need for a comfortable life at sea.

Find Out More

Whether you own a motor or sailing yacht, now is the time to carry out essential maintenance and upgrades. Don’t wait another season to sort out an irritating niggle or upgrade an out-of-date system.

If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, we still have a few slots available to help you get your boat ready for the spring, so please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Part of the Ancasta Group, Ancasta Yacht Services offers professional yacht refit, repair and services. We have a team of highly skilled technicians, laminators, engineers, and boat builders with extensive facilities and undercover workshops in Hamble, Southampton.
