Maiden voyage for fully customised new Sanlorenzo SL96A.
Over the last two years we’ve been following the personal build journey of the owner of the new Sanlorenzo SL96A, MATCH. From choice of model to over 600 custom modifications, he’s candidly shared his thoughts and rationale behind each decision.
Now that this incredible yacht has been launched, we spoke to the owner about his experience of working with Sanlorenzo UK, the handover from the shipyard, and the all-important maiden voyage.
Why did you pick up the phone to Sanlorenzo UK?
Reason for first call (a cold call) was that I was ready to buy a new boat of around 96 feet and I already knew the Sanlorenzo brand. It’s an ultra-brand – anyone who knows boats knows Sanlorenzo is among the very best. The reason for all my subsequent calls was the warm welcome in that first call - I knew I could work with Sanlorenzo UK to build a great boat.
How many times did you visit the shipyard?
As well as visiting Sanlorenzo at boat shows several times before and after placing the order, I flew to the Ameglia shipyard nine times. This was
very much my choice – I could have visited more or less often. In between my visits, the Sanlorenzo UK team also visited and collected photographs to allow me to see progress.
What was the handover like?
The countdown to the handover of the boat began with a special launch ceremony organised by Sanlorenzo at its yard in Ameglia, Italy in January 2024, a few months before the final handover date.
The sun shone and the whole build team gathered wearing Sanlorenzo branded overalls. They graciously thanked me over a buffet lunch for the challenge that my very detailed specification and
New Build: Sanlorenzo SL96A
many drawings had given them! At the crucial moment, diamond-encrusted scissors were proffered, the ribbon was cut and a bottle smashed on the starboard anchor – Franciacorta rather than Champagne, for this was Italy. Andrea Bocelli sang Time to Say Goodbye from the PA speakers and the boat was lowered into the sea for the first time.
And your first impressions?
Boarding her in the water that day, my first impressions included delight at how the custom interior had turned out. The boat has plenty of dark wood surfaces, some textured, offset by light reflective ceilings and marbles and light fabrics. The saloon windows, pretty much floor to ceiling, were breathtaking at first sight and the complex lighting scheme with touchscreen controls was even simpler to use than I had hoped.
The bathrooms are particularly stunning, and there’s some wonderful art. Can you tell us more?
The bathrooms were a delight. I had gone to a lot of trouble selecting the marbles, including driving around trade suppliers in the Massa area in Tuscany where marble blocks from the Carrara mountains are processed into beautiful slabs. The marble had been carefully cut and installed, book-matched, into five bathrooms, finished off with bronze taps and towel rails.
For artwork, Sanlorenzo prepared specific places to mount it, including setting up lighting, mirrors and reinforced wall panels.
Where was your first port of call once the yacht was launched, and how was the trip?
Upon launch, the boat went straight to her home berth in Antibes. Since then, she has hosted over 90 sleeping guests on many weekends and longer trips. Soon after delivery she made the long-distance trip to San Pietro Island at the south-west tip of Sardinia and cruised up the east coast of Sardinia and the west coast of Corsica. This initial trip allowed me to review the basic design and layout of the boat, and the customisation choices.
The interior has delighted us and our guests every day we have been on board. The spaces seem to be laid out perfectly, with the asymmetric design providing extra floor space to allow an impressively big saloon and a very generous galley.
Is it everything that you thought it would be?
Sanlorenzo Italy and Sanlorenzo UK have absolutely delivered what I hoped for, and together with friends and family I am loving the boat.
INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY SEE BLUEGAME’S POPULARITY SOAR
Innovative design, continuous development, and a strategy firmly grounded in sustainability have seen Bluegame Yachts experience exponential growth over the last five years. Into this mix, throw a couple of auspicious collaborations, and you’ve a game-changing recipe for success.
“Bluegame is a relatively new yacht brand in comparison to some of the British brands, but it has already made its mark on the UK market,” says Nick Hatfield, Managing Director at Sanlorenzo Yachts UK, which represents the Bluegame brand in the UK and Ireland.
“The brand is o ering a di erent approach to yachting, and it’s really shaking things up in terms of design. It’s disruptive, challenging traditional layouts to provide multi-use onboard spaces with more direct access, both physically and visually, to the sea.
“These design features, coupled with robust engineering and a very high level of standard specification, are proving extremely popular with UK customers – and the exponential growth the brand has seen globally looks set to continue in the UK.”
Founded in 2004 by ex-Olympic sailor and architect Luca Santella, Bluegame has successfully positioned itself as a pioneer in the yachting industry, focusing on innovation, sustainability, and the creation of functional and e cient yachts that defy traditional categorisation.
In 2018, Bluegame joined the Sanlorenzo Group, which significantly enhanced its development opportunities and saw revenues multiply 16 times over five years. This impressive expansion is reflected in a strong order book as we move into 2025 and an increasing demand for Bluegame in the UK market.
Supporting Luca Santella’s original goal of creating practical, seaworthy yachts that provide an authentic connection to the sea, Bluegame currently o ers three distinct yacht ranges that combine sophisticated design, versatility and luxury - bridging the gap between the traditional categories of flybridge and sports cruisers, trawler yachts, and open boats.
But it’s the BGX range that’s proving to be most popular in the UK, and specifically the BGX63.
Hatfield explains: “The BGX range embodies Luca Santella’s vision of building a yacht that challenges the perceived norms of motor yacht design by blending an adventurous explorer yacht feel with uncompromising quality, luxury and functionality.
“The BGX63, in particular, has been exceptionally well received. Of all the Bluegame yachts ordered to date by UK clients, the BGX63 accounts for 40 per cent of these. With a vast beach club, an open plan upper cockpit and a clever, owner-centric layout that places the master cabin at the centre of the yacht –wherever you are onboard, you’re only a few steps from the water.
“This innovative design, coupled with Bluegame’s capacity to o er personalised interiors, is the point of di erence that UK owners have been waiting for, whether they use it as a day boat while holidaying aboard or as a chase boat for a larger superyacht.”

F-LINE
New European Powerboat of the Year 2025 Nominee
Redesigned Flybridge
Moving away from the traditional Prestige layout, the new F-Line flybridge has undergone a complete transformation. The new design provides extra functionality and relaxation, including deep wraparound sofa seating, and an extendable dining table with a built-in fridge, uninterrupted views, and wide stairs for easy access.
Upgraded Helm Stations
We also love the modernised flybridge helm station which features a new layout, upgraded helm seat, Garmin displays, and traditional yacht controls, including engine Joystick, and Trim tabs for easy adjustments. The interior helm station is also equipped with all the key controls, plus two 12-inch Garmin displays.

Wide Side Decks
Moving around the Prestige F4.3 is effortless. The symmetrical side decks are impressively wide for a yacht of this size, allowing easy movement between the stern and bow. The high guard rails make the walkways feel really safe and secure, and there’s plenty of room to move around when mooring.

The world premiere of the new Prestige F4.3 motor yacht created quite a stir at Boot Düsseldorf, with visitors eager to view the newly configured flybridge, and enhanced interior. Bringing a fresh perspective to luxury boating, the reimagined Prestige F4.3 is designed to create seamless connections between comfortable interiors and generous outdoor spaces. Upgraded finishes create an extra sense of luxury, and a new flybridge layout makes the most of alfresco cruising.

As you step inside the Prestige F4.3, the first thing you’ll notice is the teak flooring, which flows in from the cockpit, creating a lovely connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. And in the saloon, there’s a spacious U-shaped seating area with a high-low table.
Elegant Cabins
The Prestige F4.3 offers a two-cabin, two-head layout, optimising space for owners and guests. The full beam master cabin is located midships with natural light pouring through the port and starboard windows, and a soft colour palette creates a peaceful retreat.

Beneteau Supports
Vendée Globe
Beneteau and the Vendée Globe celebrated a 20-year partnership this year, with fourteen models from the Antares and Swift Trawler ranges actively supporting the event behind the scenes of the World’s toughest yacht race.
“We are very proud to be partners of the Vendée Globe. It is no coincidence that we have so much in common, mainly with solid origins in Vendée where we are rooted, and our sights set on the ocean, since Beneteau can be found in the majority of countries and on most of the worlds’ seas. It will be a special Vendée Globe, as it celebrates both the 20th anniversary of our partnership and Beneteau’s 140th anniversary.”
Jean-François Lair, Beneteau Brand Director
In a remarkable coincidence, one of our clients was sea trialing a new Beneteau Swift Trawler 41 in Les Sables d’Olonne when skipper Romain Attanasio completed his Vendée Globe circumnavigation. Witnessing a finisher cross the line after many weeks at sea from the flybridge was a memorable experience for everyone onboard and a moment they’ll all cherish.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show in January. It was fantastic to show you around the very best motor yachts from Beneteau, including the Swift Trawler and Gran Turismo range. We also celebrated the Beneteau Swift Trawler 54 winning the Best Passagemaker class in the Motor Boat Awards – this incredible model continues to prove its popularity as a family-friendly motor cruiser.
Next up, we are excited to welcome you to our spring and summer boat shows, including the South Coast Boat Show and the British Motor Yacht Show. We’ll have an exclusive selection of new and used boats from Beneteau Power for you to explore, so please get in touch soon to secure your appointment with us. We look forward to seeing you there!
Beneteau Swift Trawler 54
Wins Motor Boat Awards
Best Passagemaker 2025
After months of rigorous testing by the judges of Motorboat & Yachting’s 2025 Motor Boat Awards, the Beneteau Swift Trawler 54 was named Best Passagemaker and highly commended for its well-thought-out design, comfort, and efficiency.
The judges praised Beneteau’s refinement of its Swift Trawler concept by incorporating feedback from dedicated owners to create a family-friendly passagemaker that perfectly balances practicality, comfort, and performance.
“A capable cruising machine, marrying long-distance efficiency, generous outdoor facilities and home-style comforts with seamanlike simplicity and a range of subtle innovations that builds on a blueprint, exhaustively finessed over the course of more than two decades. So if you’re looking for an unpretentious and well-priced cruising boat that gets all the big stuff exactly right, this is about as convincing as it gets.”

A REMARKABLE JOURNEY
Protector Boats in Action at SailGP Auckland
It was fantastic to see a large eet of Protector Boats in action at the Auckland SailGP event, New Zealand, including three new Chase 330s sold and delivered by Ancasta.
These heavy-duty power boats supported the high-octane event and daredevil teams out on the racecourse just ten days after the handover – a testament to their superb ability to perform under pressure.
With the F50 multihulls now equipped with new go-fast T-foils, the crews ew around the racecourse at breakneck speeds up to 100km/h – a tough job for most RIBS to keep up with. But the Chase 330 has the power to provide close proximity support, while also acting as a stable and safe platform for crews, even at high speeds, proving why this model is the go-to choice for a high-performance support boat.
Protector Boats Update
It’s been another fantastic season for Protector Boats, with three new RIBs being delivered in New Zealand to support the high-adrenaline SailGP racing series, and the unveiling of a new Targa 380 superyacht Chase boat fully customised to meet our client’s exact requirements. We are now looking forward to
a busy few months ahead, including the British Motor Yacht Show in May – please join us to take a look around the Chase 310 and Targa 380. And for those of you seeking commercial options, come and meet us at Seawork in June to view the Protector Targa 380.

Designed as a multirole superyacht tender for a discerning private owner, this bespoke Protector Targa 380 was the result of a 14-month collaboration between Rayglass Boats, Ancasta, Ancasta Yacht Services (AYS), and the owner’s representative.
Designed with functionality as a priority, this customised Protector Targa 380 ensures the owner can fully enjoy an extensive range of activities, from scuba diving and shing to overnight stays at anchor.
“The objective was to create a tender and chase boat that could be operated without a crew, allowing the owner to explore independently with his family while maintaining exceptional performance and seakeeping capabilities.”
Based on his extensive experience with highperformance vessels, the owner’s representative – an experienced captain – identi ed the Protector Targa 380 as the ideal choice. This model’s adaptability allowed for a high degree of personalisation while ensuring it met all functional and aesthetic requirements.
This project exempli es the versatility of the Protector range, offering a high-performance, multipurpose vessel that seamlessly transitions between superyacht tender, chase boat, and standalone adventure craft.
Ancasta Yacht Services’ expertise in custom modi cations was instrumental in achieving this level of personalisation, ensuring that every detail from bespoke seating to shading solutions and storage systems, was tailored to the owner’s exact speci cations.

Beneteau Integrates Elium® Resin Into Oceanis Yacht 60 Production
In its commitment to a more sustainable future, Beneteau has started using Elium® resin in the production of the Oceanis Yacht 60. Developed in partnership with Arkema, this innovative and recyclable resin has already been successfully implemented in the First 44 and aligns with Beneteau’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its boats without compromising their sailing performance.
Elium® resin can be recycled at the end of the boat’s life using processes such as solvolysis, pyrolysis, and thermolysis. These techniques separate the fibreglass from the resin, allowing the resin to be reused to manufacture new infusion parts. This reduces the need for raw materials and helps minimise waste.
Those of you who joined us at Boot Düsseldorf this year will know it was a super event with a wide range of Beneteau sailing yachts on display, including Oceanis Yacht, Oceanis, and First ranges. A key highlight was the unveiling of the new Beneteau First 30, which delivers the thrill of planing and
high-performance sailing with ease. If you couldn’t make it to the show, don’t worry! With over 50 boats sold as of February 2025, this agile cruiser is capturing the hearts of sailing enthusiasts worldwide. Its standout feature? The ability to plane effortlessly, gliding over the water with exceptional balance and finesse.
To learn more, we sat down with Ancasta’s Beneteau Sail Brand Manager, James Douch, to discuss why this performance sailboat is generating so much interest.
Yachting World put it: ‘It’s gonna go like a skimming dish!’”
This new yacht is dynamic and responsive, ensuring a nimble sailing experience. Plus, the uncluttered cockpit and simple rigging make sailing fun and carefree, whether racing with a small crew or enjoying a fast-paced cruise.
What kind of sailor is the First 30 best for?
The Beneteau First 30 has a strong legacy. Can you tell us about its history?
The original First 30 was launched back in 1977 when it instantly became a bestseller. Since then, it has maintained its popularity for over four decades. Initially designed by André Mauric, the First 30 concept and the Beneteau First range has evolved over the years, gaining iconic status among sailors and securing multiple highprofile race victories.
The beauty of the First 30 is its versatility. Whether you’re a thrillseeking racer or a relaxed cruiser, every skipper can optimise the First 30 to suit their needs – the cruising version features large winches and ergonomic controls to simplify handling, while the racing package includes a mainsail traveller for more accurate trimming. Is the First 30 suitable for overnight cruising?
Yes, it is! In addition to its highperformance credentials, the First 30 is perfect for extended sailing adventures with family and friends. Life onboard is comfortable with two cabins, four berths, a cosy saloon, a fully-fitted galley and clever storage spaces.
What was the vision behind the new First 30?
Beneteau wanted to create a new ‘planing cruiser’ category – an exhilarating blend of speed and comfort. The goal was to make planing performance accessible to a broader range of sailors and the new First 30 delivers that brilliantly – plenty of high-performance thrills while remaining comfortable enough for extended cruising.
Plus, for those wanting a bit of extra luxury, we recommend the optional Premium Pack which offers highquality upholstery, additional lounge backrests, a choice of colours and materials, and ambient mood lighting.
What are your overall thoughts on the new Beneteau First 30?
Manuard (IMOCA and Class
40
Designed by world-class experts, including naval architect Samuel Manuard (IMOCA and Class 40 legend) and designer Lorenzo Argento (performance-cruiser specialist), this new model is a testament to Beneteau’s 140 years of innovation. What makes the planing performance of the First 30 so special?
Here at Ancasta, we’re very excited about this new yacht from Beneteau which blends a longstanding heritage with innovative design. Whether you’re looking for high-speed on-water adventures or comfortable cruising, the First 30 delivers unparalleled sailing experiences. Beneteau has really set a new benchmark in the world of performance sail cruisers with this new model.
At just under 34 feet and with a displacement of 3,150 kg, the First 30 is designed to plane effortlessly. This means sailors can easily experience the thrill of gliding across the water with the hull elevated. As Toby Hodges from

MALLORCA
Cruising in Mallorca
Easy access to the Balearics Archipelago
Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearics archipelago. Located in the western Mediterranean Sea close to the Iberian Peninsula, Mallorca, and neighbouring islands Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, offer glistening white beaches, clear turquoise waters and stunning coastal vistas, creating a spectacular natural cruising playground.
Enjoy year-round sailing
The Balearic Islands bask in over 300 days of sunshine every year, creating a wonderfully mild climate all year round. The summer sailing season runs from as early as April to as late as October, with the warm sea warming up in May, and the sea breeze runs like clockwork, gradually building during the day. Winter sailing is also possible with lighter winds in December and January but watch out for mistrals that will occasionally bring stronger winds.
Find your own secluded Cala
Balearic coastlines are adorned with abundant natural coves known locally as ‘Calas.’ These tranquil hideaways boast clear and sheltered waters, creating perfect anchorages for lunch or an overnight stay. With so many to choose from, you can find a little piece of heaven, away from the crowds, to relax and unwind in complete seclusion.
Vibrant onshore entertainment
Whether you enjoy a bit of easy going beach bar culture or some lively evening entertainment, the Balearics have something for everyone. Indulge in freshly prepared tapas with local wine from nearby vineyards on Mallorca, or head to Ibiza to enjoy exotic cocktails and see some of the world’s best DJs.
Full-service shore facilities
The Balearic Islands offer a plethora of well-equipped marinas with berths for vessels large and small. Most ports offer state-of-the-art facilities so you can easily fuel up, provision and carry out any necessary boat work or repairs.
Easy
travel
Travelling to Mallorca is straightforward, with plenty of scheduled flights from all of the major UK hubs, including London, Southampton, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, Newcastle and more. Furthermore, the airport is just a 10-minute drive from Palma’s central marinas.
Idyllic Anchorages
Here are some of the best anchorages to explore on the island of Mallorca, as recommended by the Ancasta Mallorca Sales Team.
Cala Mitjana near Cala Ratjada - North East Coast
Cala Mitjana has a pretty shingle beach, which can be completely deserted at times. With impressive rock formations and crystal-clear waters, it offers idyllic surroundings and ultimate seclusion for lunch or a starlit dinner. There aren’t any shops or restaurants in this little piece of paradise, so stock up on food and drink and spend a lazy afternoon bathing in the sun and swimming, or walk up the hill for breathtaking views over the bay.
Porto Cristo, Portopetro and Portocolom – East Coast
These three charming towns on the east coast of Mallorca provide a wonderful cultural experience. You can take anchor or find a marina berth in Porto Cristo, or pick up a mooring buoy off Portopetro or Portocolom. Rich in history, each town has its own unique story and ancient relics to discover. Stroll through picturesque cobbled streets, visit local markets and soak up the traditional Spanish atmosphere before enjoying fresh seafood dishes.
Parc Nacional de l’Arxipelag de Cabrera – South Coast
The Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park is a forested island home to abundant exotic wildlife, flora and fauna just off the South Coast of Mallorca. Access to the island is heavily restricted, and anchoring is not allowed, but special permits can be obtained online that enable you to sail close to the island and pick up a mooring buoy. Diving is popular here, and organised hikes show you the best that the island has to offer.

Sant Elm – West Coast
Sant Elm is a beautiful little town on the Southwest corner of Mallorca. The setting is striking, with magnificent turquoise waters and the Tramuntana mountains towering above the bay. You’ll also discover stunning views of Sa Dragonera Island, an uninhabited national park –worth exploring if you have the time. Popular in the summer, Sant Elm has two beaches – one with soft golden sand, and a smaller shingle beach. In the town, you’ll find seaview restaurants with a lively atmosphere.
Sa Foradada, North West Coast
Sa Foradada on the North West coast of Mallorca features a remarkable 10-metre hole worn away in the cliff face, which can be seen from both the water and ashore. In addition to this extraordinary rock formation, this cove is a great place to watch the sunset. If you hike up the hill, you’ll find an excellent restaurant where you can admire the views whilst enjoying delicious homemade Spanish paella.
Cala Varques - East Coast
Head to Cala Varques on the east coast for complete seclusion and relaxation. This picturesque cove boasts a 90-metre white sand beach lapped by inky blue water, with a backdrop of low-lying rocky cliffs and vegetation. Rural in every sense, there aren’t any facilities on shore, so come well stocked with your favourite food and drink to enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle.
Caló des Màrmols - South East Coast
Caló des Màrmols is a serene and quiet cove located near the southern tip of the island. It features a small beach made up of sand and pebbles, surrounded by barren cliffs. Access to the cove is limited by land and there are no facilities, which makes it a peaceful spot to enjoy a day at anchor. The crystal-clear water is ideal for snorkelling, or you can simply relax and take in the beautiful scenery.

NEW BOAT FOR ELLEN MACARTHUR CANCER TRUST
A ‘GAME-CHANGER’ FOR YOUNG CANCER SURVIVORS
KALOOKI IN NUMBERS
Standard Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, with adaptations
Length: 13.62m (14.6m with bowsprit)
Beam: 4.48m
Draught: 2.35m
Tanks: Two water tanks
Heads: Three electric toilets
Max Per: Coded for 12 people by day and 10 overnight
The charity’s new Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, brought to the water in partnership with Ancasta Group, will help transform more young lives after cancer treatment.
More young cancer survivors will be able to receive the vital support they need after treatment as the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust officially welcomes a new boat to its fleet: a Beneteau Oceanis 46.1, Kalooki.
At 46ft (over 14m), Kalooki is longer and wider than the charity’s other boats, allowing more young people to experience its transformational adventures, while bespoke accessibility adaptations mean more of those who need additional support with their mobility can benefit from the charity’s support.
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that takes young people aged 8-24 living through and beyond cancer on sailing and outdoor adventure trips to inspire them to believe in a brighter future. In 2024, the charity supported 671 young people – the most since it was founded in 2003.
With demand for trip places projected to increase further in the coming years, Kalooki will allow more children, teenagers and young adults to access the vital support they need after the life-changing trauma of cancer treatment.
Through the generosity of a gentleman who was an ardent sailor and enthusiastically supported the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust over many years, the charity is absolutely delighted to be the recipient of the newly built 46ft yacht, Kalooki.
Features and adaptations
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust worked in partnership with Ancasta Group and globally renowned boatbuilders Beneteau to bring Kalooki to the water.
She was adapted under the expertise of Ancasta Yacht Services at Port Hamble Marina and with advice from 28-year-old George Paxford, who first sailed with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in 2009 following treatment for bone cancer in his leg and had an above-knee amputation after the cancer returned in 2018.
George, who now volunteers for the charity, helped map out ways of making Kalooki more accessible to help young people rediscover their independence and sense of possibility after cancer.
He said: “I’ve had to get used to an adapted way of moving around, which makes me very useful when it comes to designing an adaptive boat. I look to see if there are trip hazards, the need for grab rails, or access requirements, like if there is enough space for two people to get past or sit down. Anything that will reassure young people and make sure they have as much fun on trips as they possibly can.”
With George’s insight and guidance, Kalooki has been built with young people living through and beyond cancer in mind. Additional
For every new boat sold, Ancasta donates the cost for one young person to enjoy a transformational four-day adventure with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, enabling more young people to access vital support after cancer.
handrails around the yacht will help with mobility and steadiness, while extra space in the cockpit and saloon areas makes it easier to move around. Bespoke seating and handholds at the back of the boat, which also folds down, make it even more straightforward to get on and off.
Adaptations to help sail the boat have been made, too, such as moving the two primary winches forward so young people can more readily access them. Kalooki also has a German mainsheet set-up, allowing young people to be more involved as sails can be controlled from both sides of the boat.
She has five cabins compared to the Heroes’ four, which is significant for getting more young people on trips, but some cabins also feature a wooden divider, giving young people more privacy on board, while also functioning as full-sized bunks for other uses too.
‘Game-changer’
Dame Ellen MacArthur was joined by special guests, including many who made the new boat possible, for Kalooki’s naming at Buckler’s Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River in Hampshire in March.
She described Kalooki as a ‘game-changer’ as her charity aims to support more young people than ever this summer.
She said: “It’s a big day for us at the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as we welcome Kalooki into our fleet. It’s wonderful for us to have boats in the water so we can take young people out and have adventures with them, and it makes a huge difference to have Kalooki. She’s one of ours, and she is a game-changer.
“I’d like to say a massive thank you to Jean-François Lair and all the team at Beneteau, and Nick Griffith and all the team at Ancasta. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you’ve done. It’s amazing to have Kalooki in the fleet.”
Kalooki becomes the third specially adapted boat owned by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. In 2016 and 2017, Ancasta and Beneteau were instrumental in the charity acquiring two Beneteau Oceanis 45sSolent Hero and Caledonian Hero - which sail from the charity’s bases in East Cowes Marina, Isle of Wight, and Largs Yacht Haven, Scotland respectively. Kalooki joins Solent Hero in East Cowes, while the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust also owns the Gibsea 44, Moonspray, in Largs. Nick Griffith, Ancasta Group Managing Director, said: “We’re delighted to see Kalooki set sail, ready to help the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust reach even more young people. After facing so many challenges, these inspiring young individuals deserve the chance to reconnect with life and themselves through sailing and outdoor adventures. Supporting this incredible mission is something that I, along with the entire team at Ancasta, feel deeply passionate about.”
Jean-François Lair from Beneteau continued: “Beneteau is proud to support Ellen MacArthur’s Cancer Trust. This is a long-term collaboration which started nearly 10 years ago. What the charity is doing is remarkable. Also, Dame Ellen MacArthur is a very famous figure in France. So, when Nick Griffith from Ancasta proposed us to support the project, it was a very easy decision to make.”
Young people will get to experience the benefits of Kalooki when the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s 2025 season gets underway in the last week of May. She will also be taking part in this summer’s Round The Island Race. For more information visit ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org or follow @EMCTrust across social media.
How to look after your rigging
Rig inspections are essential to maintaining your sailing yacht's overall safety and performance. Rig failures can be costly, dangerous to your crew and may cause damage to your boat and others. Still, by identifying weak spots and having the rig professionally repaired before it breaks, mast failure can usually be avoided. Most yacht insurance policies also require that your rigging is in a fit and seaworthy condition, so it's essential to ensure your mast and standing rigging are safe and secure at all times.
Split Pins and Rings
Check that there aren’t any split pins or rings missing. All split pins should be open at a 20-degree angle and split rings should be tightly coiled to prevent movement.
We recommend that a professional rigger checks all of your rigging periodically. But here are a few things you can check yourself every time you go sailing to help prevent problems. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it covers a few of the basics. Always seek professional advice should you uncover any concerns.
▲Split pins missing
▲Split pins present
▲Uncoiled split rings
▲Closed split rings
Shackles
All shackles should be seized and locked to prevent the bolts from unwinding. Seizing wire or cable ties can be used to secure the shackle.

The Admiral’s Cup
Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club
17th July to 1st August 2025 Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK
Since its inception in 1957, the Admiral’s Cup has held a prestigious status as the unofficial offshore racing world cup. After a hiatus of 22 years, this legendary event will now return in 2025.
At the time of writing, 30 yachts forming 15 teams, representing major international yacht clubs have entered, with more expected to follow, so it’s shaping up to be a momentous comeback. Many of the best sailors in the world will go head-to-head in a two-week series of inshore and offshore courses, culminating in the gruelling Rolex Fastnet Race.
Throughout its illustrious history, teams representing Great Britain have garnered the most success, securing the coveted trophy on nine occasions. Germany has achieved four victories, while the USA and Australia have each triumphed three times, with Australia currently holding the esteemed trophy. France, Italy, the Netherlands, and New Zealand have also celebrated victories in the Admiral’s Cup, showcasing the global reach and competitiveness of the event.
IRC Classes
The Admiral’s Cup Class IRC rating bands and length ranges are designed to allow as many boat types as possible to compete at the event. These parameters also ensure that racing remains competitive and intense, particularly during the longer offshore races, and address the topography constraints of racing in the Solent and adjacent waters.
Admiral’s Cup Class 1
• Boats ranging from 44ft, (13.41m) up to 56ft (17.20m)
• IRC TCC 1.335 - 1.464
• The Carkeek 46, Cookson 50 and highly competitive IRC 52/ TP 52 are good examples.
Admiral’s Cup Class 2
• Boats ranging from 36ft (11.00m) up to 44ft (13.40m)
• IRC TCC 1.176 - 1.276
• Boats such as the MAT 1340, FAST 40 and IC37 would fit the parameters.
Crew
There are no limitations on professional crew, but RORC continues their drive for inclusivity by allowing one extra crew member, in addition to the boat’s IRC capacity, if a boat sails with two women or two under 25-year-olds, or a combination of the two.
“The RORC Race Team eagerly awaits the arrival of teams from across the globe for the Admiral’s Cup. With meticulous measurement and scrutinisation set to take place before the series begins, our dedicated Race Management Team is prepared to deliver a fair and challenging competition. To enhance the excitement on the water, we’ve organised a vibrant social programme centred around the newly modernised RORC Cowes Clubhouse. The Admiral’s Cup is shaping up to be an unforgettable event!”

Admiral’s Cup Race Director

IMOCA 60 ADVENS1
FOR SALE
Top 10 Finisher in the Vendee Globe 2024/25
On 10 November 2024, 40 courageous skippers set off from the fan-packed shorelines of Les Sables d’Olonne in France to cross the start line of the iconic Vendee Globe. This epic non-stop, no outside assistance, solo round-the-world race sailing West to East via the three Capes is the toughest sailing race on the planet.
Amongst the mighty fleet of offshore grandprix 60foot foiling monohulls, Sam Goodchild raced onboard ADVENS1, leading the fleet on day two and 23 more times after that. Sam crossed the finish line in Les Sable d’Olonne in ninth position overall - a testament to his phenomenal talent and demonstrates that this boat can still compete at the top of its game, even against the newer generation IMOCAs.
Having already won the IMOCA Globe series in 2023 with Sam Goodchild at the helm, it’s no wonder this fantastic duo excelled once again. A 2019 Guillaume Verdier design, this IMOCA 60 is, without question, one of the most competitive boats in the fleet, with thousands of design, engineering, and optimisation hours invested to get it to the very front of the fleet of the world’s most famous offshore fleet.
Managed and campaigned by the TRR team (Thomas Ruyant Racing Team), ADVENS 1 is a highly professional outfit in every sense. This boat is not only proven as a single-handed machine, both in the hands of Thomas Ruyant when she was known as LINKED OUT and more recently as FOR THE PLANET with Sam Goodchild, but has also taken wins in double-handed races and, as a “fully crewed” boat during the last OCEAN RACE EUROPE event.
ADVENS 1 is exclusively for sale with Ancasta Race Boats.

Imagine setting sail with your family on a once-in-a-lifetime voyage around the world aboard your own luxurious Lagoon 450. That’s exactly what this adventurous UK family has done. After exploring the Caribbean and crossing the vast Pacific, the Hawkeye crew are now immersing themselves in the beauty of New Zealand.
In this two-part series, we follow their inspiring journey – first from Tahiti to Tonga, where they discover remote island paradises. Then, in part two, they sail through Fiji’s vibrant waters before taking on the legendary passage to New Zealand.
Tahiti to Tonga
After nearly seven weeks, we finally tore Hawkeye away from the luxuries of a marina berth in Tahiti’s capital, Papeete, to resume the cruising life and headed to the next island called Moorea. From here on, we really are following in the footsteps not just of Captain Cook but also those of his ship’s master, William Bligh, on HMS Bounty. It’s hard to visualise the vast distances across the Pacific Ocean, not least because we tend to weave our way around the islands as the fancy takes us, never taking a direct route to anywhere. Hawkeye’s satellite tracker log shows that we had already sailed nearly 6,000 miles from Panama to get to Tahiti, but there were still another 5,000 miles yet to go before we reached New Zealand. Captain Cook called Tahiti, and the other nearby islands he later visited, the Society Islands because they are in relatively close proximity, less than a day’s sail apart. To try to atone for behaving like spoilt kids when we took a quad bike tour of Moorea, we followed an ancient Polynesian custom and fitted Tiki’s, who are Gods, to each of Hawkeye’s bows. “How do they work?” we asked the locals. It turned out that the Tiki’s need instructions in the form of prayers, so we asked our port side Tiki to give Hawkeye kind weather, whereas the starboard Tiki was asked to keep us safe from hazards such as rocks, other boats or anything in the water. So far, their help has been impeccable!
We sailed on to first of the Leeward islands which is Huahine, then Raiatea, where the pace of life slowed right down, and the glitzy hotels of Tahiti and hordes of people were a distant memory. Our luck was in when we were visited by a trio of massive manta rays, perhaps three meters or more across, several nights in a row, with
them playing around in Hawkeye’s underwater lights. You can judge the size of these mantas by the photo of Alexandra snorkelling above them; they weren’t in the least bit bothered by us. Other cruisers joined us as we sat on the aft deck, sipping drinks and watching their mesmerising somersaults. We also visited a pearl farm where we learned how they are grown and extracted.
We had a short sail across to the renowned island of Bora Bora, which was often referred to by other cruisers as Bora Boring because it has a focus as a honeymoon destination. However, our experience was very different, as perhaps we scratched the surface a little more.
We discovered an interesting WWII history, where Bora Bora was a vital link to supply the submarines based in Australia, which sank the vast majority of the Japanese merchant navy fleet, which largely contributed to Japan’s surrender. There was even a massive WWII naval gun in place which could, in theory, still fire. We were treated to a helicopter flight around the islands, which gave stunning views and also visited the Bora Bora Yacht Club.
After Bora Bora we headed to Maupiti Island, which is, so the locals say, how Bora Bora used to be. There are no hotels or resorts of any kind, just a few small Pensions (B&B’s) and the people are clearly very happy indeed about that. The hike to the summit of Teurafaatiu was hard work, hand over hand climbing on rocks at the steepest part near the top, but the view was, well, the most stunning view we’ve ever seen anywhere.
The entrance to Maupiti is very narrow, with often rather nasty waves and high currents, which is probably why Captain Cook didn’t even attempt entry with HMS Endeavour. We took Hawkeye in to wait a few days for a weather window for the next long stretch across the Pacific but ended up being gale bound there for ten days, during which we cycled around the island and snorkelled on the reefs. We were lucky enough to be there at the same time as their annual festival, called a Heiva, which in Polynesian means “community gathering” which runs for about four weeks. The dancing and music were amazing, but here there were no tourists, this was just for local people, so we felt
privileged to be made so welcome. As there are no shops in Maupiti, we set off for the ten-day voyage towards Tonga having already pretty much consumed the fresh food we had budgeted for the voyage.
Our sailing plans were constantly dashed by the weather, with the culprit being the South Pacific Convergence Zone, which is a complex weather feature that is hard to predict, even for the super-computers that generate the weather models. Our two favourite weather models, for the entire world, are actually both UK based, with the Met Office at Exeter and ECMWF at Reading. We use a specialist weather router, a highly experienced Kiwi called MetBob whose advice is invaluable, including interpreting how the weather relates to Hawkeye’s sailing characteristics. Once the nasty weather had gone and we could pass through Maupiti’s reefs safely into the open sea, all our plans were slowly dashed. As we each approached, MetBob wisely suggested that we scrub our island stops at Aitutaiki, Palmeston and Niue or otherwise face nasty weather. Sailing on towards Tonga, we crossed the “false” international date line, called so because Tonga decided it wanted to be in the same time zone as Fiji, so they changed to Fijian time. Thus, we lost a day; Monday suddenly becomes Tuesday plus one hour. Later, between Tonga and Fiji, we sailed across the “true” date line, where our longitude went from West to East. Weird. As ever we had a mixture of balmy weather with no wind through to near gale with sails reefed down; the sun set right in front of us each evening. Fresh bread seemed to improve with every baking session. Alexandra and I share the watches evenly, with our radar and AIS alarms giving extra comfort, especially at night, and of course the ever-watchful Tiki’s on the bow.
Our paths now diverged from that of Captain Cook on his first voyage, as we were headed to Tonga. When leaving Tahiti, Captain Cook opened his secret instructions from the Admiralty, to discover that he was to sail south, into freezing cold weather, in what became a fruitless search for Terra Australis Incognita, which we now know as Antarctica, and then explore the coast of New Zealand. I am pretty sure that Captain Cook would not appreciate the liberty I have taken
of doodling Hawkeye’s track, in red, over the top of his track of HMS Endeavour.
Nine days later, as we approached Tonga we were greeted by breaching humpback whales. After docking in Vava’u, which was as calm as a millpond after the oceanic waves outside, the officials were welcoming and efficient. This is the first English speaking country we have visited since leaving Antigua a year before, where cars drive on the left and there are photos pinned up of King Charles. Almost every country we will now visit, through Asia and Africa back to Antigua, drives on the left and has many English-speaking people. The ancient Polynesian Kingdom of Tonga consists of 176 islands scattered over the ocean and is the first country in the world to greet each new day. We took a tour to snorkel with the humpback whales but soon discovered that getting to swim anywhere near them is very tricky, even in a specialist whale watching boat that could motor at over 30 knots.

Get Your Yacht Ready for the New Boating Season
As the days grow longer and the promise of warmer breezes beckons, it’s time to prepare your yacht for a season of smooth sailing. Although boat maintenance might not be at the top of your priority list, taking care of your yacht now will ensure you’re ready to set sail with confidence this summer, and Ancasta Yacht Services (AYS) is here to take the stress out of the preparation. Whether you need a full-service package or a helping hand with specialist jobs, their expert team has you covered.
Here Paul Hardy, Technical Sales & Service Manager at Ancasta Yacht Services, shares some of the most important jobs to carry out before you hit the water.
Hull Preparation
If your yacht or motorboat has spent the winter on dry land, now is the perfect time to inspect the hull, keel, rudder, and through-hull fittings. Check for scratches, gouges, or abrasions and book any necessary repairs before relaunching. AYS offers expert care services, including antifouling, hull polishing, teak cleaning, gelcoat repairs and anode replacement – all with a professional finish.
Engine Servicing
A well-maintained engine is essential to keeping your yacht running smoothly, and routine servicing should follow the key intervals of 50, 250, 500, and 750 hours. Our in-house marine engineering team provides expert, cost-effective servicing for complete peace of mind, and are approved dealers and service agents for Yanmar, Volvo Penta and Nanni diesel engines.
Deck Hardware Inspection
Give your deckware a thorough check to ensure that stanchions, lifelines, cleats, chain plates, and pulpits are in top condition. And don’t forget to inspect the anchor system and service the winches to avoid any issues or downtime over the summer. AYS is an approved Lewmar Gold Installer and Service Centre, offering expert maintenance by Lewmar-trained technicians if you want extra reliability for the season ahead.
Safety Kit Servicing
Your safety equipment – liferafts, lifejackets, EPIRBs, and hydrostatic MOB gear – requires regular servicing. If you don’t have time to organise this, we can collect your equipment, deliver it to our trusted partners at Ocean Safety for maintenance, and return it to your yacht ready for the season ahead.
Interior and Exterior Valet
After months of winter storage, even the most well-kept boat cabin can get a bit stale, so a professional interior valet will refresh your living spaces and make your time on board even more comfortable. And don’t overlook the decks – teak surfaces, in particular, need extra care to avoid long-term damage. AYS offers detailed valeting solutions to rejuvenate your boat’s appearance inside and out.
Sail and Canvas Restoration
On-deck canvas – sail covers, dodgers, and biminis – often need a thorough clean after being exposed to the elements over the winter. We also recommend checking your sails for wear and tear and sending them for professional laundering and repair so they’re in good condition when you set sail.
BOOK YOUR PRE-SEASON MAINTENANCE TODAY!
Whether you own a motor or sailing yacht, now is the time to carry out essential maintenance and upgrades. Don’t wait another season to sort out an irritating niggle or upgrade an out-of-date system.
