Welcome to Ancasta’s 2015 Summer Collection. As we head into July, the Boating season is in full swing. During the spring there was a real buzz about in boating centres in both the UK and further afield in the Med. In recent years, while the core boating public have pursued their passion, we have missed those boaters who only come out in more buoyant times. Looking around today it is very apparent that people are feeling happier about life and boating is once again back on the “going to do” list, which is great. We have already had a number of events that were extremely well attended. Our Motorboat Club had a very successful cruise to Weymouth and Poole. For the sailors, the Ancasta Yacht Club in conjunction with the Beneteau Owners Association managed a cruise to Lymington and then Poole. We have also seen the Palma Boat Show as well as the Multihull shows in Grand Motte and closer to

home in Portsmouth being well attended by enthusiastic boaters feeding their passion. Looking ahead, we have the America’s Cup World Series kicking off on the 23rd of July which is turning into a very big event indeed. If you can, you should attend. We can also look forward to the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Bicentenary Regatta which is the following week. Somewhere in the mix is Cowes Classic Week, Cowes week to follow and finally the start of the Fastnet. A great summer full of great events providing a great excuse for those within reach of the Solent to get out on their boats. On the boat sales side it has been a strong Spring period for Ancasta, both new and used. Our Brokerage business continues to set the standards and the accolades we receive from clients are adding to our confidence. Counter to normal seasonal patterns, our new boat sales across all our brands are continuing which is another indicator of the more buoyant times we are experiencing. Long may it continue. HYS Refit and Repair as well as Advanced Rigging have had an exceptional Spring period and it would appear demand is continuing through into the normally quieter summer months. Both operations continue to demonstrate their capabilities as leaders in their particular areas and we are very proud to have them within our

organisation. If you have a need for work to be done on your boat, at the very least, you should talk to HYS RR or indeed with Advanced Rigging. Finally, inside you will find some information on our expanded parts department. The annoyance for many boat owners is the lack of easy and efficient access to parts for their boats. Ancasta has recognised this and we now have appointed a full time parts manager to remove this issue. The demand is there and this service is seen by many as a God send. We hope all our customers have a great Summer and that the weather co-operates so you can get out on the water to enjoy your boats. Nick Griffith MD, Ancasta Group.

EVENTS Recent Events It has been a busy few months on the event front with various sea-trial events in both Cannes and Palma. Ancasta Yachts presented two stunning boats at the Palma Boat Show in May this year. Our Lagoon team have been meeting clients old and new in France at La Grande Motte and closer to home at the Portsmouth Harbour Multihull Show. The teams have witnessed larger than normal turnouts at each of these events which is a good sign of higher numbers of people looking to get back on the water this season. Our Clubs have also been afloat with the Ancasta Yacht Club rally to Poole (in association with the Beneteau Owners Association) which drew over thirty people to eat and drink over one of the recent windy weekends. The Ancasta Motorboat Club went slightly further with stopovers in Weymouth and Poole. See page 58-59 where John Warren (Smee) takes up the story. If you own a motor or sailboat and are keen to get involved, we have more events planned including a Swift Trawler rendezvous in August (see below), drinks at the Southampton Boat Show in September and a joint clubs end of season BBQ in October. The plan is to go yet further next year with some cross Channel adventures so if you are interested, you can join for free and we will keep you up to date with what we have planned.

The Swift Trawler Rendezvous 2015 The weekend of the 21st - 23rd August 2015 will see a fleet of Swift Trawlers gathering in the Western Solent for one of the Annual UK Swift Trawler Rendezvous events. Launched in France five years ago, the Swift Trawler

Rendezvous have gathered momentum with growing numbers of travelling Trawler owners. Each year we try to muster as many of these versatile boats as possible to eat, drink and celebrate their classic styling and modern functionality. This

THE NEW McCONAGHY KER 33 AT COWES WEEK R A C E BOA T S

The Ker 33 is hoping to continue the long running success story of Ker Yacht Design and with the first boat now sailing in Western Australia they look to have done just that. With the race winning McConaghy/ Ker partnership in full swing again here, it felt like an easy choice to bring hull #2 to the UK to try and knock those French designs off their perch, by demonstrating the true dual purpose nature of the 33. With the Ker 33 being available in both an asymmetric and symmetric spinnaker

setup the boat can excel both inshore and offshore; having seen interest rise in the short handed sailing out there, we have opted for the asymmetric configuration on our first demo boat. The anticipated IRC numbers at this stage are 1.027 in symmetric configuration, which is actually well below the early predicted design numbers. They have been kept low largely due to the boat having a simple fin design keel as opposed to a bulb, which is quite heavily penalised under IRC. The other reason for a fin over

a bulb is the increased chord length that you gain from a fin arrangement, which is seen very favourably under other rating systems such as ORC where we also hope a good fleet will be established. She is expected to arrive in Hamble late July and will be participating in Cowes Week 2015. Contact us to arrange a viewing and even join us for a day in Cowes Week.

profile of these boats and reducing drag wherever possible but now this is really extending to so many other areas, whether it be the single aerofoil push and pulpit posts, to the exceptionally clean deck arrangement, pretty much everything has been considered. The first boat has been geared with a tiller setup, which certainly for inshore and downwind response is the way to go from a helmsman’s point of view but McConaghy also offer a twin wheel setup

for those with more offshore sailing in mind, in fact if you are looking at doing both, McConaghy have designed a very neat system that makes both systems interchangeable and so with a morning’s preparation you can be fully optimised for your day’s sailing no matter how long the course. You can expect to see the boat out racing in the headline events of 2015 and we are predicting a plethora of silver wear to be heading its way.

KER 40 + UPDATE With the first boat now finished and based in Cowes it is really plain to see how much of a development the 40+ is on from the original 40 design, everything about the boat just looks the extra bit fettled and optimised. One of the biggest things that stands out is the attention to detail paid to the aerodynamic effects, as well as all the usual hydrodynamic features that Jason Ker implements. Focus for so many years has been on the underwater

CHICHEST Chichester Harbour is without doubt one of the most beautiful harbours on the South Coast. Surprisingly it can be all things to all people. It is one of the foremost dinghy racing areas and home to some amazing fleets from the beautiful Sunbeams and X boats to the spectacular International 14s and Moths, regularly hosting international events. It is an amazing wild fowl sanctuary where sightings of rare birds are common including little Egrets, Curlews and Grebes to name a few. It is an excellent fishing area and a Sea Bass nursery which is probably why we have a colony of seals living in the harbour and often on view. It has a historical heritage that is quite amazing being the entry port for the Romans during the construction of the Fishbourne Roman Villa. Bosham is reputedly the location for King Canute’s tidal activity and King Charles allegedly visited Birdham lock house. It is home

to some 10,000 vessels, six marinas, 10 yacht clubs and a wonderful place to visit. Where would I go if visiting this harbour for the first time? Firstly, do your homework. Chichester can be confusing and a little challenging for the unprepared, but with reasonable preparation and following the numerous guides it is a perfectly safe and clear channel. First port of call would be the East Head anchorage. Comes up on your starboard side as you follow the marked channel round past the Winner Shingle bank, ensure you know the state of tide to avoid grounding at low water. The current can be quite strong here so be sure to lay out 4 times the maximum depth you will be in with chain (6 with warp). Then sit back and enjoy, maybe take the dinghy to the beach and sand dunes or just watch the activities. If this is too busy for you proceed a little further up the channel towards the South Cardinal mark of Camber and enter the Thorney Channel where another anchorage appears on your port side just off Pilsey Island,

generally a quieter spot but remember as this is the Thorney Island military base and you should not land there. If this does not suit then back to the main channel and go up to the Chalk Dock beacon a starboard hand mark and round it towards the Itchenor Reach and again on the starboard side an anchorage will appear. These anchorages all have good holding ground and are clearly marked on the chart. No visit is complete without a visit to Itchenor. As your enter the Itchenor Reach via the starboard hand Fairway buoy you will see to starboard the now sadly closed Southerly Yachts buildings and then to starboard will appear 5 large white buoys marked ‘visitor’. Pick any one of these, although sometimes it is necessary to “raft up”. A visit to the Ship Inn should be compulsory I think, the manager Mike keeps an excellent cellar with some fine proper (real) ales and not only that, a very good restaurant as well. From these buoys you can get a taxi ashore or across the water to Bosham Hoe where it is a very pleasant short walk along the water’s

edge to Bosham itself. Another must do trip as the village is charming with tea rooms and craft shops and The Anchor Bleu which can be very busy during the Summer months but is another good pub. If Marinas are more for you then continue up the channel towards Chichester Marina, on both sides you will see some fabulous properties and as you bend around the channel to face north easterly you will get a marvellous view of Chichester Cathedral spire and the pretty village of Dell Quay. You will pass to starboard the Birdham pile, the entrance towards Birdham Marina which is reputed to be the oldest marina in the country, visitors only by prior arrangement. Carry on to the next starboard hand mark and turn sharply to starboard to begin your approach to Chichester Marina. The channel here is not wide and there are no port hand marks so rule

of thumb is no more than a boat’s length off the starboard marks. Normal procedure is to moor on the outer waiting pontoon and go up to the marina office for berthing instructions. The marina has some of the best facilities around but also available is the very good Chichester Yacht Club and the Boathouse Restaurant and Café. For the more energetic a walk along the waterside towards Dell Quay and you will find another excellent pub, the Crown and Anchor, known for its fish menu. If visiting Chichester Marina, be sure to drop into the Ancasta Office located a few doors down from the afore mentioned Boat House Café. The team in Chichester comprises of Geraint and Anthony who between them have a wealth of knowledge and experience on both power and sailboats as well as the local area. on: 01243 885 380. I have not mentioned the Emsworth Channel where there are three marinas, Sparkes, Emsworth and Northney. Emsworth provides access to the village itself. The other two are quite remote and only Sparkes has a bistro on site as yet. Chichester Harbour offers huge diversity to boat owners and is enjoyed by cruising boats from all over the world. MARK JARDINE TALKS TO DENNIS FISHER OF ADVANCED RIGGING AND HYDRAULICS ABOUT THE SERVICES THEY PROVIDE AND WHAT OPTIONS ARE OPEN FOR YACHT OWNERS TO MODERNISE THEIR HARDWARE AND RIGGING.

◄ A canoe boom

▼ The new carbon mast ready for the Swan 44

▼▲Old and new: simplyfing the systems at the top of the mast

Mark Jardine: What do you do as a company? Dennis Fisher: We supply a lot of the boat builders and other riggers with furling systems and hydraulic equipment for new projects or refits. We also manufacture rod rigging, composite fibre rigging and we offer a rigging service whenever it’s required to commission new boats or upgrade boats; whatever it is you want from the chain-plate upwards. MJ: Is your work mainly based in the Hamble area or can you provide your services anywhere in the UK and around the world? DF: We can offer services abroad and we perform rig inspections all over the UK. We do commissioning work abroad, we do repairs abroad and we can do rerigging abroad. Most of our work is based in the UK because of the number of boats here. In busy periods we are limited by our capacity of staff to some extent but we can work wherever we’re required. MJ: Looking at upgrades to boats, what work are you currently doing on yachts that is making a difference, in your opinion, to those yachts? DF: Some of the older racing yachts, or the old classic yachts, are going towards either re-rigging with rod to take a bit of weight out, or going to carbon fibre masts for replacement because the cost of carbon fibre isn’t so expensive now. With the difficulties in obtaining aluminium section and its high manufacturing cost in bespoke rigs such as those used by the old Nautor yachts and Baltics etc., the carbon rig is not so far away in price and makes a real difference to their performance as a replacement- it transforms the boats to a great extent. Hydraulics assist also with vangs and automated systems sometimes for even the smaller race boats. Where there’s big backstay travel we can put in motorised systems to wind up the coarse adjustment of backstays quickly, so rather than hand pump them you can now press buttons to take out the time it takes to get the vang down or the backstay back on after tacking. For the cruisers in-boom reefing is the game because of sail handling. But power’s the way forward if you can get your hydraulics to save time and energy.

MJ: You have a Swan in at the works at the moment. What’s being done to her and what changes will this make to the boat while sailing? DF: The Sparkman & Stephens 44 is quite a handful downwind - the boats used to roll a lot. This boat’s having a hull re-profiling, a new carbon fibre rig, new rod rigging, new halyards which are now Dyneema rather the old, heavy braid on braid, so overall the rig weight is reduced significantly and that will transform the boat upwind with pitching and rolling reduced. She’ll be a different boat; a lot stiffer and it won’t heel over as much - it has the effect of additional crew on the rail. It’ll make a huge difference in performance. MJ: So your services can take an old boat, a classic design, and really modernise it and give it a cost-effective upgrade to turn it into something completely different? DF: Yes, that’s true, particularly with the older boats because the difficulties of getting a mast now in aluminium for a cost which is reasonable are mounting, also the sections are disappearing. So carbon now has become more cost-effective. We like to get involved with all types of boats, whether they’re for cruising or racing. A lot of our customers are offshore racers, they like to do rallies, they like to do races, they like to do things like the AZAB (The Azores And Back Yacht Race) and other longdistance events and we want to make sure they’ve got equipment on board that is reliable, not lightweight to the point where you worry about it, we still work to the old factors of safety that the designers would have added in the first place. We’re not making strength compromises anywhere, all we’re doing is making sure the factors of safety are still there but reducing weight significantly and increasing performance. MJ: So combining the latest technology with original safety standards? DF: We don’t compromise anything to do with factors of safety. We’re just into performance and weight reduction for those that want it.

▲ A combination of old and new parts on the new carbon mast for the Swan 44 at Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics

MJ: On new builds, which yacht manufacturers do you work with? DF: We’ve worked with Oyster since 1988. We’ve supplied their hydraulic Reckmann furlers for nearly every Oyster since then right up to today and to the 125ft. We supply Discovery Yachts with their furling systems electric and manual for their 57s and 55s. We’ve worked with everybody; Northshore, Nautor for the Swans, we’ve re-rigged a lot of Swans over the years - it’s the Swans and the Oysters that like to participate in the regattas and the adventurous offshore sailing so we do a lot of support work with their owners and skippers. MJ: If you were talking to a yacht owner who maybe had a yacht which needed some work done, the rigging was getting a bit tired, what upgrade would you suggest would make the biggest difference for their enjoyment of the yacht, both cruising and racing? DF: I think it depends what scale it is and what the boat is already equipped with. If it were a large cruiser with a carbon fibre mast already then you’d be looking at improvements such as halyard locks to take out compression in the mast. We’ve worked with boats where they’ve increased their performance by using halyard locks to reduce compression, systems for asymmetrics downwind with bowsprits - all of these things however do affect the mast significantly. For the smaller boats, which are limited in what they can do, then there’s the performance gains in halyards to look at. Owners will buy a sail and then put a stretchy halyard on it. We can improve their performance in terms of the running rigging specification and the materials used there. The only drawback where you have to be careful is that, with all this non-stretch material, the energy has got to go somewhere – it is no longer used in stretching the materials and if you have a gust it can rip the winch of the deck or a block will break, so we have to look at all those things and be very careful what we

advise people to do. Just to go full-on with something that doesn’t stretch or something that’s going to save weight, all that energy is going to be transferred into the spar or into the boat somewhere. What a lot of people don’t understand when they say “I want one of those...” they could end up with blocks coming off the deck or something else. Everything’s available, but you need to be careful with what you select. MJ: So you look at a yacht on an individual basis and make recommendations that will suit that yacht? DF: Yes, we’ll do anything the owner wants, but sometimes we have to say, “Wait a minute, are you aware of what this will have as an effect on the boat?”. Bowsprits and code zeros are one of the most popular upgrades at the moment, but a lot of people don’t understand the difference between a downwind asymmetric sail and a code zero. It’s only when the front of the boat tries to become a cabriolet they realise what’s been going on. A code zero has a tensioned luff and for the bigger boats we’ve got systems that accommodate the loads and these systems are designed into the boat - we have hydraulic code zero furlers that roll things up at 125rpm. On the smaller boats many owners don’t realise how long it takes to roll up an asymmetric, they don’t realise that a code zero will add significant compression to the mast and that some require a bowsprit that will want a bob-stay to handle the loads. We’re here to help with all of that. MJ: So an owner’s ideas can be significantly changed once they realise the practical implications?

+44 (0)2380 454 280 www.advancedrigging.co.uk

DF: Often, They go to boat shows, they have discussions and it is very difficult to understand what the implications are on the mast if you’re not an engineer or if you haven’t got the experience - you can go out and buy a bowsprit, bolt it down, and then you find out all the jib boxes have collapsed and everything’s gone pear-shaped but you’ve no idea why. We know why, it shouldn’t have been there in the first place, and there are things you can do to avoid all these issues in terms of equipment that might do the job or you might want the boat altered to take the bowsprit. We’ve done it with some of the bigger Swans and others, we’ve actually fabricated carbon bowsprits which are removable so that the boat kept its lines, but they can go into their full-on race or regatta mode. A lot of people don’t know what we do and what we get involved in - we’ve been here servicing and rigging Maxi Yachts, Round the world yachts, Whitbread 60,s etc., and although our name has changed, we have been here for over 25 years we’ve worked all the way encompassing new developments. MJ: So when an owner is looking to upgrade, really they should be coming to you first to find out what would make the best upgrades for their yacht and approach it that way around? DF: We’re always willing to help. We’re not here to just sell, sell, sell stuff to people because we’re like a big garage for your boat; we have the rigging team, the hydraulics team, a mast repair man who works closely with all the other spar makers so he can do all the necessary alterations to the spar. Anything you want mostly can be done. MJ: Dennis, many thanks for your time. It’s really given me an insight into what you do at Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics. DF: You’re welcome, I hope it all helps!

DOWNWIND CRUISING SAILS When selecting the specification for new Beneteau Yachts and Lagoon Catamarans, we turn to local sailmakers Ultimate Sails. See below for their advice on downwind cruising sails: There are two key differences between downwind sails and conventional headsails. Headsails have a fairly flat shape similar to that of an airplane wing while downwind sails have fuller shapes optimised for greater apparent-wind angles. Downwind sails gain additional sail area with positive luff and leech curves-the area outside the triangle formed by the head, tack, and clew. The greater the luff and leech curves, the larger the sail will be. In general there are three types of spinnakers: the traditional “cruising” chute, the furling Asymmetric and the Code 0.

Cruising Code “0”: If you’re looking to add more reaching performance from your boat the Ultimate Sails Code “0” fits the bill. Designed specifically for each individual boat. Our unique full radial multi panel construction is combined with the best nylons to give a sail with a smooth flying shape. Corner loads are addressed by specially engineered layered radial patches which help to spread the loads through the sail more evenly and absorb the shock loads inherent in all downwind sails. All Ultimate downwind sails are designed to suit your exact requirements using a suite of highly sophisticated design tools and drawing from a database of 12,000 designs compiled over 20 years.

Furling Asymmetric:

Cruising Chute:

Snuffer:

Once hoisted and unfurled the sail is sheeted like a Genoa although it adds a lot more performance over a wide range of wind speeds and angles. The versatile design has been refined over many seasons so that it is stable and easy to trim in all conditions. The sail includes a single line furler and anti twist rope in the luff to make handling easier. Our unique full radial multi panel construction is combined with the best nylons to give a sail with a smooth flying shape. Corner loads are addressed by specially engineered layered radial patches which help to spread the loads through the sail more evenly and absorb the shock loads inherent in all downwind sails.

If you are looking to add more horsepower to your boat when sailing downwind then the Ultimate Sails Cruising Chute is the perfect choice. Once hoisted it is sheeted like a Genoa although it adds a lot more performance over a wide range of wind speeds and angles. The versatile design has been refined over many seasons so that it is easy to trim in light conditions and allows you to run deep in stronger winds. A snuffer is recommended for easy and safe handling when sailing short handed.

Ultimate Sails snuffers are designed to make it easy to use your cruising downwind sails especially when sailing shorthanded. A pocket houses the uphaul line to stop twisting and the grp mouth shape ensures smooth retrieval. Finally a light weight mesh sock allows the sail to breathe and dry out during stowage.

The 630 has an understated elegance which belies its massive volume and incredibly generous deck spaces. More typical of 100’ luxury yachts - for the outlay of a 60’ production motor yacht, She carries all the very best of her Lagoon pedigree, which now spans 30 years and is fast approaching 3000 vessels built. The 630 offers a choice of 2x 260 hp or 300hp engines and has tremendous fuel economy due to her low hull resistance. With a 10m beam, she has a transatlantic range, and provides a solid and stable haven both at anchor or at sea where she produces the absolute minimum of pitch and rolling.

CLUB CRUISE LYMINGTON > WEYMOUTH > POOLE > LYMINGTON 2015

I joined the Ancasta motorboat club when I purchased my current boat in 2014. I was keen to extend our cruising grounds from the familiar waters of Poole Harbour and Studland which for many years had been our weekend routine. Following our previous twenty-six foot Sea Ray Sundancer we now found ourselves in a new boat and a new home port on the River Hamble. I had received an earlier email from Ancasta regarding the Cowes event run previously but I was still finding my way around the new boat so I gave this one a miss. Both myself and my wife took our day skipper practical so we were now looking to test ourselves and our boat a little further. When I received the invitation from Nick Hatfield (Prestige brand manager at Ancasta) with planned cruise details that was to take place starting in Lymington and on to Weymouth then returning to Southampton waters via Lulworth Cove and Poole I was immediately interested but at the same time a little unsure as to whether my experience would be a problem for myself and a hindrance for the Ancasta team who were organizing the event. I was

pleased when Nick assured me that this would be exactly the type of cruise to suit me and that his team would be there to help with any problems ashore or afloat. Nick emailed all the details to us which included our first stopover at Lymington Yacht Haven. We arrived at 15.30 and soon found our berth as it was marked with a large Ancasta flag at the end of the pontoon. We had some time to meet a few of the existing members as all the berths had been arranged together, then the club gathered in Ancasta sales office around 18.00 where the Ancasta staff had laid on some drinks and snacks and we had an opportunity to meet all those going on the cruise in a relaxed way. That evening we all met at a local pub /restaurant which was yet another opportunity to get to know everyone. The lead boat was to be skippered by Jon Mendez and there was to be a friendly briefing each morning to explain the plan for the day ahead. On the Saturday we were given the way points of our intended passage but at the same time I knew that I did not need to rely on my own somewhat limited

navigation skills as Jon had made it clear that the lead boat would be in contact at all times. As we left the marina a quick radio check on the VHF from Jon to make sure that all parties were en route reassured us that we were not on our own and I began to look forward to our passage to Weymouth. The lead boat had decided to leave via Alum Bay and cruise close to The Needles - a little closer than I would have attempted without the assurance from Jon that we had sufficient depth and all was good. A little way out from the needles a quick call on the VHF came through to say that we were going to cruise around 25 knots and make our way to Weymouth. This would be the first chance that I have had to test out the autopilot and also test the boats engines over a prolonged pierod. After a couple of hours on comfortable flat seas we arrived at the entrance to Weymouth Harbour where the Ancasta crew went in first to arrange the berthing. Boats were called in and were rafted up alongside the harbour wall. Another new experience for us and luckily the Ancasta team had sufficient ropes and shore power

page 58

leads and the knowledge of how to secure each boat together. As we sat in the harbour that evening I was pleased that I had made the decision to join this short cruise as I had already gained confidence in our boat. This is why we bought it and it was good to be moored up in an unfamiliar harbour and a night out in Weymouth finished off what was a great day. The following morning we were to head to the more familiar territory of Poole Harbour via Lulworth Cove. This was the part I was looking forward to as Poole had been our home port for ten years with our previous boat, although we had never ventured further than Studland. Again the skipper called on the VHF to be sure that we had all departed safely and had not left any crew behind at Weymouth. Our passage to Poole took us close to the shore line where we had constant updates from Jon on the lead boat telling us the depth of water and any hazards such as lobster pots and dive boats. When we arrived at the entrance to Lulworth Cove it looked a little narrow and with the chart showing a number of rocks I was glad that the lead boat headed in first. As it

was a little crowded it was not possible to anchor within the cove so it was suggested that we could all navigate into the cove using the lead boat as a marker giving us safe navigation in and out. From here we headed towards Poole and now that we were back in familiar waters, Jackie was happy to take over the helm. The timing could not have been better as she was keen to test out the handling of the boat at high speed, so the invite from the lead boat to do some high speed passes for some photos was exactly what was needed. I think we should have closed the roof first as we both got a face full of water as she crashed through the wake of the departing boat (great fun) and another good test for the boat! Once I had picked the clock up from the floor where it had fallen there were no further problems. Little did I know that this was not going to be the only time we where going to get wet. After mooring at Poole Quay Marina, we were greeted by the team and a new addition who was blowing up a S.U.P. Not knowing what a S.U.P was we agreed to have a go (it turns out that S.U.P stands for Stand Up Paddleboard) and after a little instruction I was on the water and soon standing up and paddling around the marina. This again was great fun and a new experience for us both. After falling in a few times (without a wetsuit) it was

time to get showered and ready for the evening. This was to be a great evening after a few drinks aboard Midnight Dreams and off to the Italian restaurant on the quay side. We all arrived around 19.00 and left ???? - lots of food, lots of drink and a really good time was had by all in a very relaxed atmosphere. The following morning we were to end our short cruise and depart for Southampton so we all said our goodbyes as some members where heading in different directions. From here we were to follow the lead boat back into the Solent but this time via the North channel. We had not used this before and this was again going to be very useful to us as we had heard that this was a narrow channel that runs close to the shore so local knowledge and experience from the lead boat was helpful yet again. Over just these few days we gained more confidence in both ourselves and our boat, I was able to test out all the navigation equipment and the engines and have the back up support and knowledge from Jon Mendez and the whole Ancasta team. I found the whole experience friendly and relaxed and would recommend it to all boat owners, new and old. Regards John & Jackie (Smee).

The teak deck choice Real teak or composite Flexiteek – which is best for your boat’s deck? The skilled craftsmen at Hamble Yacht Services Refit & Repair have wide experience in installing, maintaining and repairing both, but if faced with a choice between the two, what are the sorts of things the boat owner might want to consider?

The real thing There’s nothing like a teak deck to give any boat, large or small, a classy look and feel. During it’s life a real teak deck goes through a cycle of three different colours: a reddish-brown when it’s newly laid and sanded, a silvery-grey once it has been weathering for a few months, and then a lighter reddishbrown once it has been freshly scrubbed. This natural weathering

page 62

is both the beauty and curse of real teak. Traditionalists will say that regular light scrubbing of a real teak deck is all part and parcel of boat ownership. A properly laid and maintained real teak deck will outlast many a boat owner, remaining a joy to behold for years and proving itself to be worth every penny of its initial cost. There are some disadvantages, of course. As with anything that has to cope with the worst the

extreme marine environment can throw at it, teak decks can encounter problems. You’ll need to keep a watchful eye on the planks and caulking, and repair any obvious leaks or splits before water finds its way underneath and starts to cause further trouble.

Beauty more than skin deep Real teak is a naturally very oily wood that doesn’t need painting with oils or preservatives – it can look after itself. A deck may look weathered, but just below surface the timber will be as good as new.

Some boat owners take advantage of this by scrubbing off the weathered surface to bring back that fresh-laid look. Light scrubbing is fine, but heavy scrubbing is to be frowned upon – particularly on relatively thin planks – because over time it’ll eventually wear away the timber to the point where it’ll need replacement. The wood may also

erode quicker than the caulking between the planks, resulting in hollows that allow water to pool and lead to leak or rot problems. On the plus side, small sections of teak deck can often be repaired fairly easily without the cost of having to have a complete new deck fitted. In a very short time a repaired section will weather to

match the existing teak perfectly. The labour-intensive nature of preparing real teak, not to mention the cost of sustainably-sourced raw material, means real teak decking is always going to be an expensive option – but sometimes the look and feel of real teak planking is the only thing a boat owner is prepared to accept.

▲ Beneteau F40 after repair was completed

A low-maintenance alternative Probably the best alternative to real teak decking is Flexiteek – and at first glance you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference. Flexiteek is a synthetic teak panel of composite materials that looks and feels as good as the real thing. Flexiteek doesn’t fade, split or crack, and is available in a range of different teak and caulking colours: the boat owner can choose if they want their deck to look like new-laid teak, or whether they’d prefer it to look permanently fresh-scrubbed or even weathered. For über-modern vessels it’s even available in black or off-white planks for that techno look. Flexiteek has superb non-slip qualities wet or dry – which makes it suitable not just for decking but also as durable flooring in saloons, cabins and heads. For that realistic look, Flexiteek is available in a range of plank widths from 45mm to 150mm so it’ll suit the size and style of teak decking or panelling on any sized boat.

The installation Following careful measurement and templating of the boat, Flexiteek’s 5mm-thick composite planks and caulking are welded together at manufacture to create an impermeable layer. The prepared panel is glued to the vessel’s deck with a special adhesive and weighted down while the adhesive cures. Once it’s stuck down you have a permanently water- and weatherproof deck. Careful surface preparation of the deck substrate is essential before Flexiteek is laid. Flexiteek is flexible (the clue’s in the name) so laying it over a deck with bumps and hollows will result in a deck with bumps and hollows. It’s

important that what’s underneath is absolutely smooth, so filling, fairing and sanding are a vital part of the job. Once down, however, Flexiteek offers very low maintenance. It does not fade, turn grey or ‘silver’ like real teak so there’s minimum scrubbing required to keep it looking good as new. It’s also stain resistant: soap and water will remove most spills such as oil, fuel, red wine, and fish blood easily. The latest Flexiteek 2G is a second-generation synthetic teak. It’s 35% lighter than its rivals – ideal for performance yachts, multihulls and powerboats – and cools 30% quicker than traditional com-posite decking, meaning there’s more opportunity to walk on it barefoot in a hot climate.

It’s also UV-resistant for a long and trouble-free life.

Making a choice Ultimately the choice of real teak or Flexiteek will be a personal one, based on a number of factors: authenticity, maintenance, cost and the suitability of the vessel. If you’re not sure which way to go, the staff at Hamble Yacht Services Refit & Repair will be happy to offer guidance based on their expert knowledge gained from many years of fitting and maintaining both teak and Flexiteek decks.

The Ancasta Parts department has been described by many owners as an “absolute god-send” supporting those who have purchased boats through Ancasta but whose warranty period has expired or who simply want extras to enhance their boats. As owners enjoy their power and sailboats, over time parts will wear and need replacing, Ancasta Parts are able to source and supply everything from a gland to a generator. The parts department is available five days a week and is also able to deal with boat repair companies, quotes and orders for insurance claims. Primarily supplying parts for the Beneteau, Lagoon and Prestige brands, they are also able to source parts for a wider spectrum of major boat manufattures and will happily assist any Beneteau, Prestige or Lagoon owners who did not buy through Ancasta yet need spare parts.

Don’t just take our word for it:

“All arrived late yesterday Thank you. As you suggested a whole new valve has arrived. Not a problem as we can certainly use it! The calm shell vents have been put on and look great. Can’t thank you enough for all you have done for me.” All the best. Nigel “Thank you for so much the light and the drawer mechanism (and complimentary brown one thank you) have arrived. I truly appreciate all of the effort that you have gone to for us to find all these different parts. You are a star.” Kindest Regards. Rahma. “I have recently been dealing with, Paula Saunderson, to source an obscure but vital internal rigging component on my 2000 Beneteau 31.7. Paula is obviously knowledgeable, patient and efficient, a credit to your company. Well done and thanks.” Rgds Mark H
