Welcome to Ancasta’s 2017 Autumn Collection. Summer is the season when we all look forward to getting out on the water and this summer certainly brought enough warmth and wind for a good season to be enjoyed by all. Cowes Week challenged even the hardiest of sailors with a cocktail of weather that saw some unexpected winners come to the fore following which a new record number of Fastnet crews set off for this most popular of long distance races. Those looking to improve their summer racing performance can find tips on improving your technique for downwind trimming within the pages of this issue. For those who are not that keen on racing but who have the time to really enjoy boating and discovering the hidden gems of the British coastline, particularly the West Country, we hope you will enjoy reading our article on anchorages surrounding Plymouth and beyond. Ancasta is also pleased to announce the opening of a second office in this maritime centre, located in Plymouth Yacht Haven and helping to service the growing West Country market.
Those looking to improve their summer racing performance can find tips with numerous events to showcase the next generation of yachts that will be seen on the water next Summer. Starting with Cannes Yachting Festival (12th-17th Sept) where Beneteau Sail is launching the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1 and 55.1. On the power side we will see the new GT 40 and SportFly 50 which are very welcome additions to the fleets on offer. In addition, Ancasta will be showing the much anticipated 520 and 630s from Prestige’s new range of luxury motor yachts, while Lagoon will be showing the next generation in motor yachts with their innovative 78 alongside the new 40 and 50 foot sailing boats. CNB will be there to launch the brand new 66 which is already attracting much interest, and will have a 76 there too, for sea trials. Cannes is the leading European Show for the British market and each year more and more would be boat buyers make the trip in mid-September. If this is of interest, we would be delighted to assist, so please call if you would like to make an appointment. For the UK based boaters Southampton Boat Show is without doubt the big event and Ancasta and its manufacturers are delighted to be launching a number of new models at the show. Prestige will have the 630 and 560 there, while its 520 will see its UK launch, with the much awaited 460 making its UK debut alongside. Beneteau sailing yachts is bringing the Oceanis 51.1 for its UK debut
as well as the beautifully appointed Oceanis 62. We are also pleased to present the world launch of the Swift Trawler 35. As ever, in tandem with the Southampton Boat Show, Ancasta will be showcasing a great line-up of boats at the Swanwick Used Boat Show. This is a very successful show, ably run every year by our Swanwick staff and is well worth a visit. The park and ride facility from Swanwick marina to Mayflower Park in Southampton is a great way to cover both these shows. Hamble Yacht Services Refit and Repair (HYSRR) along with Advanced Rigging and Hydraulics will also be in attendance at Southampton Boat Show with an array of the superb products they support and services they provide. If you are looking for a specific item for your boat or simply for some professional advice, they can be found in the Ocean Hall. We are hopeful that the busy summer and genuine lift in enthusiasm witnessed in recent months will bolster the boat show efforts. EVENTS Cowes Week 2017 29 July - 5 August 2017 This year’s Lendy Cowes Week was another huge success enjoyed by over 8,500 sailors and 100,000 spectators. With brisk winds for the majority of the week and racing being cancelled on the Thursday due to strong gales, competitors were put through their paces in what turned out to be an exciting but brutal week of racing. With over 40 races run every day, the Solent was lit up with sailboats of all shapes and sizes zipping up and down the courses set by Cowes Combined
Clubs at the Royal Yacht Squadron. We were delighted to see 14 Beneteau First 40’s out on the water again this year, with ‘La Reponse,’ ‘Shadowfax’ and ‘Tilt’ finishing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in IRC Class 2 respectively. ‘La Reponse’ also picked up 1st place in the Commodores’ Challenge Cup. Meanwhile, in the FAST40+ Class, twelve boats battled it out for victory and the ever successful Ker 40+ ‘Invictus’ finished on the podium in 2nd place. The streak of Ker success continued

with the Ker 46 ‘Lady Mariposa’ winning the Sevenstar Triple Crown trophy and finishing 2nd overall in IRC Class 0. Events onshore were just as exciting with Family Day, Ladies Day, a Red Arrows display and the spectacular end of week fireworks being just some of the social highlights. There was plenty of daytime entertainment across the town too, including live music, children’s activities, market stalls and an abundance of food and drink to enjoy.
Fastnet Race 2017 6th August 2017 The world’s largest and most prestigious offshore sailing event, the Rolex Fastnet Race, took place for the 47th time this summer. Entry for the race sold out in record time and with 362 boats on the start line, the race was the largest ever in the event’s 92 year history. Entries for the event were diverse, ranging from small IRC cruiser racers right through to maxi multihulls and a variety of skillsets including many of the world’s top offshore racing teams as well as amateur family and
friends teams. As such, the start of the race made for a spectacular sight and a special highlight was the presence of seven Volvo 65’s blasting their way up the Solent and out past the Needles. The 605nm offshore race from Cowes to Plymouth via the Fastnet Rock is renowned for its challenging nature and this year was no different with ever varying weather conditions, a prolonged beat up to the rock and a downwind sleigh ride back to Plymouth.

A healthy sized fleet of 15 Beneteau First 40’s raced in the IRC 2 class with ‘Elke’ finishing on the podium in 3rd place and the Beneteau First 44.7 ‘Lisa’ finishing in 2nd place. Ker40+ ‘Pace’ Wins FAST40+ Nationals After eight highly contested, tight races, Johnny Vincent’s Ker40+ ‘Pace’ took number one position at the Fast40+ National Championship in great style. Coming out on top at the end of each day’s racing, ‘Pace’ looked strong throughout the championship and gained podium positions in all but one race. Johnny Vincent, owner of ‘Pace’ commented, “It is fantastic to win in a fleet like this. It is incredibly close racing and unbelievably good fun charging downwind at over 20 knots, with tons of green water coming at you! With such competitive racing, you cannot always be first to the top mark but you know there are enough tactical decisions and manoeuvres in two or three laps, that it is anybody’s game… When we sold my last boat, a TP52, I asked myself: Can we do something that can be as much fun? Now I am probably the novice out of this team but this is a much harder boat to sail than a TP52 and this racing is ten times more competitive than we were involved in before. The FAST40+ ticks all the boxes; we have close racing in a big fleet and it is so much fun.”

Top Tips “Downwind Trimming” Whether you are out in front defending or attacking from the back of the pack, huge gains can be made on the downwind leg of a yacht race. Making sure your spinnaker trim is fine tuned will help you get down to the bottom mark in a winning position and whether you have a symmetric or asymmetric spinnaker, understanding not only how to trim the sail but what angles to steer is essential for good VMG and gaining a competitive advantage. We asked the experts at North Sails to give us a few tips on how best to trim your spinnaker downwind. One of the world’s leading sail designers and manufacturers, North Sails is well placed to help you get the most out of your sail, whatever the race track throws at you.

Symmetric Spinnaker Trim
In most cases you should fine tune your pole height to ensure the pole and tack are level with the clew. However, on a close or beam reach, try lowering the pole so the tack is lower than the clew (by a foot or more) to pull the draft forward and open up the leech giving you a faster reaching shape. Conversely, on a broad reach fly the pole higher, keeping the two corners (clew and tack) even. In a fresh breeze beware of flying both corners too high, as this will let the spinnaker get too far from the boat and may reduce stability. If the boat is rolling side to side, try lowering the pole, pulling the pole aft, and/or choking down the sheet lead.
Symmetric spinnakers are very common amongst IRC rated racing yachts and are controlled by the spinnaker sheet, pole and guy. Understanding how to set up all three of these controls is vital to good downwind trim - use these correctly and in harmony and you’ll achieve good speed on the downwind leg of the race. This, of course, can be difficult to achieve and requires focus and attention to detail as you constantly tweak all three aspects according to your ever changing direction of course and wind shifts, but put the effort in and you’ll get results.
Trim the guy to set the pole perpendicular to the wind
In most conditions you should set the pole so that it is at 90 degrees to the wind direction. This will change as you sail down the course, so your guy trimmer will need to be alert and ready to change the position of the pole constantly; if the shoulder is rolled out, and the foot is too round, then trim the guy to pull the pole aft, if the foot is stretched flat, and the tack is poking out to windward, then ease the guy to let the pole forward. Also, unless it’s very windy, the guy can actually be trimmed further aft than square to the wind to get the luff to run
Raise or lower the topping lift so the pole and tack are the same height as the clew
Ease the sheet to curl the luff, and trim to just take out the curl
The job of your spinnaker trimmer is to constantly ease and pull on the spinnaker sheet to ensure that the spinnaker luff is slightly curling at all times. They should never take their eyes off the sail, as tiny movements in boat direction or wind speed can cause the sail to quickly fill or collapse. Make sure they have a dedicated winch grinder who has their full attention so they can react quickly to trimming calls and have another crew look out behind the boat to call in the gusts or lulls to help the trimmer to preempt any changes.

Asymmetric Spinnaker Trim
Asymmetric spinnakers trim differently to conventional spinnakers. Flown from a bowsprit, an asymmetric spinnaker is controlled by the sheet, halyard and tack line. Some boats also have tweakers to choke down the sheet. Like with the symmetric spinnaker, high concentration levels are required to achieve optimum performance downwind and lots of practice and experience in different conditions will really help you to gain a natural feel for the controls and improve your performance on the water.
Reach Up to Go Downwind
Asymmetrics don’t go dead downwind so optimum speed is achieved when you reach across the downwind leg, zig zagging down the course. Although you will sail further, the extra speed more than makes up for it. The optimum sailing angle can be as much as 40 degrees above dead downwind – nearly as wide an angle as we sail upwind, but sailing at these high angles increases the apparent wind, which in turn increases boat speed. The trick is to build speed at an aggressive apparent wind angle, and then to push down to a lower course, with the boat speed holding the apparent wind forward. The driver and trimmer must coordinate efforts for best effect. As the load builds in the sheet, either from aggressive sailing angles or a stronger gust of wind, the trimmer should ask the driver to bear away, while easing the spinnaker sheet to unload the helm. As the load in the sheet drops, trim the sheet and head up to rebuild power and speed. Then once you
have better speed, carry it down again. You should always feel the breeze blowing across the boat – not over the stern, so when you lose apparent wind flow across the boat, head up, rebuild speed and apparent wind, and slide down again. Continue to do this all the way down the leg and you’ll be on course for a good race.
Ease, Ease, Ease the Sheet

We asked one expert trimmer for advice on sailing deep with an asymmetric spinnaker, and he said: “Remember these three things: Ease, ease, and ease. Ease to a curl, pause and the curl disappears. Ease again. Carry a curl, and keep easing. Ease some more. Usually the sail stalls from being over trimmed. Ease.” Regardless of the point of sail, the basic principles apply - ease to a luff and trim. Given the rapid acceleration, the apparent wind angle is changing all the time so aggressive trimming is required in order to keep up as the boat builds speed. An equally aggressive ease is needed to prevent a stall as the boat slows down - remember, over trimmed is slow. On a close reach, trim to the telltales, or keep a small curl, and on a broader reach force the sail out to a bigger curl. You will be surprised how far out it can go.
Tack Line Trim
At times, on a broad reach, it may also pay to ease the tackline a foot or two. This will allow the entire sail to rotate further out to windward. There are a couple of things to guide you in how far you ease the tackline: Does the sail rotate out to windward? Can you sail lower or faster? If the sail sags to leeward instead of rolling out to windward, then pull the tack line back down to the bowsprit. Likewise, if you lose control with the tackline eased, snug it down. With refinements in modern A-sail design, there is less of a need to ease the tack line these days, but experiment to find the optimum setting for your boat and sails.
Planing
As the true wind builds to around fifteen knots, you may be able to plane downwind, depending on your boat design and sail area ratio. Even for a dead downwind course, it will pay dividends to reach up onto the plane and carry optimum speed. Your fast planing speed will overwhelm the extra distance sailed to get on a plane, and see you move ahead of the fleet. On the other hand, if the winds are light and you can’t plane, don’t waste energy going the wrong way. There is a fine line in achieving the best angles downwind with an asymmetric spinnaker, but practice and experience of different weather conditions will help you to get a feel for your VMG settings.
Summary
Overall, understanding spinnaker trim and the impact it can have on your downwind performance is crucial to a good race. Finding your optimum trim settings and steering angles will propel you up the fleet and help you to improve throughout the season. Every boat and sail is different, so it will take time to find the optimum symmetric or asymmetric settings, for all of the different weather conditions and race formats, but if you put in the effort to fully understand your spinnaker trim set-up, you’ll get closer to the results you want on the race course.

The Maiden Factor, anything is possible 27 years after she sailed into Southampton at the end of the 1989 Whitbread Round The World Race, Tracy Edwards’ 58ft offshore racing yacht ‘Maiden’ has returned home to Hamble Yacht Services for a major restoration. Her Project Manager, Howard Gibbons, along with the skilled workers at HYS, have not wasted any time getting the restoration work underway, so we asked Howard to reveal what work has been done so far and what ‘Maiden’ has in store for her in times ahead.
The Maiden Factor
Turning Back Time
‘Maiden’ was the 13th crew member of the all female sailing team who wowed the world with their incredible rise to success - pulling together a race-ready yacht with limited funds, securing sponsorship from King Hussein I of Jordan and going on to not only be the first all female team to compete in this iconic round the world sailing race, but to also finish a very impressive second overall in class. ‘Maiden’ was sold at the end of the race to help pay for the costs, but was recently discovered lying in the Seychelles in an awful state of disrepair. Edwards felt compelled to bring this incredible yacht back to life, and to use her as a key promotional tool to help raise awareness of her new Maiden Factor Project.
The restoration is intended to bring ‘Maiden’ back to her former glory. She will largely look exactly as she did when she sailed around the world with Tracy Edwards’ all female Whitbread crew in 1989, sporting the same colours to honour her incredible story and heritage. Some of the equipment will, of course, be modernised to meet today’s safety standards including a new mast, new deck gear and new galley. The layout will mostly stay the same, with the only major change being to move the engine from forward of the mast to a more aft position and adding some crew accommodation into the forepeak.
A Bare Shell
The team expect the works to be completed in May 2018 when ‘Maiden’ will begin sea trials before starting her time working with the Maiden Factor Project. The eventual aim is for ‘Maiden’ to help promote the belief that “anything is possible” to young women all over the world, especially those without access to decent education. Funded by HRH Princess Haya of Jordan in memory of her father King Hussein I who funded Edwards’ original Whitbread campaign, the trust wants young people to be able to see and understand what it would have been like to sail around the world and live aboard the boat in 1989 - it was tough and hard work, but twelve determined women made their dreams come true and it is hoped that their story will inspire many more young women to dream big and take action.
Since moving back to Hamble, ‘Maiden’ has been stripped bare to leave just an empty shell. All of the damaged winches, clutches and systems have been removed from the deck and all of the foam cleared from the interior. She has also been shot blasted to remove all of the old paint and filler from the hull, which has helped the team to establish just what state she is really in. This process has been long and hard going, but now that she has been unclad and primed, they have a better understanding of what issues they need to overcome. From this blank canvas, the team will work to revive ‘Maiden’. Howard is working with Naval Architect, Tony Castro, to finalise a restoration plan that is suitable for this legendary and historic vessel.

Meet The PM Howard Gibbons is the Project Manager of the ‘Maiden’ restoration project. Howard was involved with Tracy Edwards’ Whitbread campaign in 1989, helping her to restore the yacht the first time around, so, in his own words, “this project has a sense of déjà vu about it.” Howard was also involved with two more round the world yacht races acting as Shore Manager for Heineken in 1993 and Silk Cut in 1997. More recently Howard
was the Project Manager for the Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta – a reunion for former Whitbread and Volvo Ocean Race sailors and boats staged in Alicante, Spain prior to the Volvo Ocean Race, 2011-12. This incredible CV of high profile sailing campaign management and yacht preparation gives Howard the experience and knowledge required to take on such a challenging project and he is looking forward to restoring ‘Maiden’ so that she can continue her incredible service to Tracy, and going forward, the Maiden Factor Project.

Anchorages in and around Plymouth If you are visiting the area by boat, there are plenty of pretty anchorages to explore within easy access of Plymouth. Here are just a few of our favourites.
Plymouth Sound Barn Pool
A pretty little bay located at the foot of the National Trust’s Mount Edgcumbe Estate, the beach shelves off steeply so is popular for diving, but you can also anchor close to the shore and enjoy a picnic in the country park or a tasty lunch at the Edgcumbe Arms.
Jenny Cliff
Nestled between Mountbatten Breakwater and Fort Bovisand, Jenny Cliff is close to Plymouth’s main marinas and is a great overnight anchorage. An official Country Wildlife Site, Jenny Cliff is home to four endangered plants and the lush woodlands and grasslands are important habitats for a variety of insects and birds, so you can really get back to nature here.

Cawsand Bay
A gorgeous sheltered anchorage on the edge of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, Cawsand Bay is ideal for a lunchtime or overnight stop. Tucked away and overlooking Plymouth Sound, it is a great place for a swim and the sandy/shingle beach will keep children entertained with its abundance of rock pools to explore. If you fancy a trip ashore you’ll find some good local pubs in the pretty fishing villages of Kingsand and Cawsand, from where you can keep an eye on your boat and enjoy some good gastro pub food.
River Yealm Cellar Bay
Just inside the mouth of the River Yealm you’ll find Cellar Bay. With its sheltered and secluded sandy beach, Cellar Bay is a delightful swimming spot when the weather is good. To stretch the legs, venture through the Passage Wood and up over the heather covered cliffs and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views across the entrance to Plymouth Sound. However, beware the sandbar at the river entrance and check the tides for depth.

Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo
From Cellars Bay you can make your way up the River Yealm to the pretty twin fishing villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo. Tie up alongside the Ship Inn at high water and enjoy a drink in this tranquil hideaway before exploring the rest of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on foot. There are plenty of walks along the stunning coastline with incredible vistas over the ocean.
Erme Estuary
Mothecombe, Coastguards and Wonwell Beach
At the entrance to Erme Estuary you’ll be wowed by Mothecombe Beach, Coastguards Beach and Wonwell Beach. All privately owned and maintained by the Flete Estate, these gorgeous stretches of sand have become a bit of a mecca for beach sports such as windsurfing, SUP and horse riding. Erme Estuary is also a wildlife haven and you’ll often spot cormorants, herons and kingfishers residing here.
Bigbury Bay
Bantham Beach
If you head further east from Erme Estuary you’ll reach Bigbury Bay, home of Bantham Beach. This beautiful expanse of sand offers lots of space for seaside fun and will keep the family entertained for hours. It’s also a popular surf spot and board hire is available locally. At low tide you can explore a maze of rock pools heated up by the day’s sun, or if you fancy venturing further ashore, there are some lovely coastal footpaths to navigate. At the end of a busy day exploring and playing, why not head to the Sloop Inn for some hearty pub grub and, if you’re lucky, enjoy a spectacular sunset over the ocean.
Burgh Island
Looking out from Bantham Beach, Burgh Island stands out in the middle of the bay. This serene tidal island can only be accessed via a special sea tractor that can be seen trudging back and forth at low tide. Now home to an exclusive Art Deco hotel, the island is also famous for its links with some of Agatha Christie’s novels.

During the Summer of 2007 Nicholas Hall returned to the place of his childhood near the village of Marden in Kent to establish a vineyard and winery. He chose a unique ten-acre parcel of land that has been farmed by his family for four generations, having been originally settled by his greatgrandfather, Herbert Hall, in the 19th Century. This warm, sheltered site was the first land that Herbert owned and he always maintained that it produced the earliest and best fruit of any site that he ever
farmed. Today as a vineyard, with its gravel-seamed clay soil and sunny, south-facing slope, Herbert’s belief holds true; planted with Chardonnay (40%), Pinot Noir (30%) and Pinot Meunier (30%). The winery produces hand-made, site-specific sparkling wines that express the soil and meso-climate of the vineyard. Nicholas is inspired by the sustainable artisan techniques that his great grandfather would have known and is committed to low-yields and the use of physical labour and manual canopy management rather than chemicals to produce fruit of natural ripeness, intensity and flavour. He named the wine Herbert Hall in honour of his great grandfather. Alongside Nicholas, the winemaking team comprises Peter Morgan and Kirsty Smith. Together they are concerned with capturing the distinctive quality of the fruit, grown organically in this unique corner of the Garden of England. Herbert Hall wines are typically elegant, with intense fruit on the palate and a fine, silky mousse. Whole-bunch pressing is slow and gentle with cuvée and taille fractions separated by variety. Temperature controlled primary fermentation takes place in steel tanks with 10% of the chardonnay fermented separately in oak barrels. Cold stabilisation and blending are carried out during the winter before bottling for secondary fermentation in the Spring. Wine is matured on lees for 18 months before riddling and disgorging. Herbert Hall is a small production, sparkling wine, with each bottle individually hand-dated and initialed on release. It has been one of the English wine industry’s great success stories, earning a place on many of England’s top wine lists and receiving exceptional praise from leading critics.
