Welcome to Ancasta’s 2017 Summer Collection. Summer has well and truly arrived here on the south coast of England. No doubt the Ancasta offices in France and Majorca have been enjoying their summer for some weeks already. In the UK, we have already had our first Motor Boat Club Cruise and the Fast 40’s are started their 3rd event this year as I write this. Looking ahead, this boating season looks as busy as ever. We have more cruising events planned, which reflects their popularity. In addition to Cowes Week, this year is a Fastnet year and with 400 yachts entered, this will be the biggest edition of this classic offshore race. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust will complete its “Round Britain Challenge” and by the time this edition is published, we will know where the America’s Cup is destined. Purely by coincidence, you will see inside that Ancasta is opening its

first office in the Southern Hemisphere, in the amazing yachting centre that is Auckland, New Zealand. Long term Ancasta team member, Sam Pearson, has moved to Auckland and is setting up the new service. Historically Ancasta has had a lot of trade from both New Zealanders and Australians looking to access European boats and having an Ancasta presence in this part of the world will encourage that further. Should the Kiwis secure the America’s Cup then our new venture will be given an unexpected boost. Ancasta has enjoyed its busiest new boat commissioning season ever. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit, exciting politics as well as fluctuating exchange rates, the boat market for both new and used yachts over the last eight months has been very strong. This buoyant boating market is due to several factors. Ancasta’s reach into non-UK markets continues to grow. Our manufacturers have invested in a great deal of new product over the last two years and those efforts are now generating good sales. We are also pleased with our Brokerage business, which has also performed extremely well. This is due to the extra investment in technology and improved processes, backed up by arguably the

strongest team of individual brokers supporting the Ancasta Network. Finally, it does appear that despite the uncertainties, the boat owning public has decided enough is enough and that boat ownership austerity must end. Looking ahead our sales for 2018 deliveries are also looking as strong as we have seen. Demand for certain makes and models is encouraging boaters to take the longer-term view. Ancasta’s ability to provide an efficient part-exchange facility and very accessible finance enables our customers to commit to their longer-term dreams while still living their current ones. We hope you enjoy this edition. As usual, there is a great collection of new and used yachts combined with a great deal of interesting and relevant information for our boating clients. Le Salon du Multicoque 2017 La Grande Motte 19 – 23 April 2017 We had a very successful event at this year’s International Multihull Boat Show in the unique resort of La Grande Motte, Southern France. With a variety of multihulls all presented afloat, and with more than 60 different multihulls on display, it was a fantastic opportunity for potential buyers to compare lots of different models in one place. We had four Lagoon multihulls for visitors to

explore and all models were very well received. La Grande Motte itself is a great setting for the show, with golden sandy beaches, contemporary architecture, a fabulous golf course and plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to enjoy, so if you missed this one, it’s definitely an event to get in your diary for next year! The nearest airport, Montpellier, is just a

20 minute taxi ride away and, with daily flights from London, it’s easy to get to. London On-Water 8 – 11 June 2017 London On-Water 2017, London’s No.1 On-Water Boat Show and Supercar Showcase, got off to an exciting, if windy, start with several great features both on land and on-water. The yachts and boats on the water in the Central Marina at St Katharine Docks proved a big hit with visitors, while the Mariner’s Village on Marble Quay played host to a selection of nautical items, gin, sailing courses and holidays, and of course the stunning Supercar Showcase. A fabulous range of Supercars and modern everyday

cars, from the uber-stylish Fiat 500 Riva to a half million pound Lamborghini Aventador, drew in the crowds from all around London. Tesla’s brand new Model-X with gull wing doors and the incredible AK427 Cobra and Elemental Sports Cars also gained a huge number of admirers. On the water, Ancasta presented the 500 and 620s from Prestige Motor Yachts, which dominated the motorboat line up. The show gave visitors the opportunity to really explore these models, on the

water, in central London. Also drawing people to the marina were the incredible 20m ‘Glider’ and the extreme Sunus R32 powerboat in which Tom MontgomerySwan and the explorer and TV personality Ben Fogle will attempt a round Britain record attempt in July this year. The sun shone throughout the weekend and visitors from all over the Capital enjoyed the show. Ancasta is looking forward to next year’s London On-Water.

Poole Boat Show 19 – 21 May 2017 Following the fantastic success of last year’s event, blue skies and brilliant sunshine brought visitors in their droves to this year’s Poole Harbour Boat Show, making for another outstanding exhibition. A large variety of sailboats and motor yachts lined the quay for visitors to admire over the three day event. Located right in the centre of Poole and in close proximity to cafes,

bars and restaurants, as well as the National Trust’s stunning Brownsea Island, the show has plenty to offer, and the live music, fireworks and children’s rides kept families entertained throughout the show. We offered visitors the chance to view a selection of sailing yachts and powerboats from our Beneteau new boats range

The Portsmouth Harbour Multihull Show 2017 9-11 June 2017 This year’s Portsmouth Harbour Multihull Show basked in sunshine as visitors flocked to see the largest dedicated on-water multihull show in the UK. With an array of catamarans and trimarans of various sizes on display, visitors had a unique opportunity to view lots of different models in one place during the three day event. On hand to discuss all aspects of multihull ownership, charter options, performance and more, was the Ancasta team representing Lagoon, with the

spacious Lagoon 42 and the Lagoon 39 on display. The Lagoon 42 has received lots of interest since its launch and a long and growing waiting list further emphasises its heightened popularity. Featuring all the very latest innovations such as a centrally positioned mast and self-tacking headsail, as well as a light, spacious and luxurious interior, the 42 is tremendous fun to sail and comfortable at sea.

Palma Boat Show 28 April – 2 May 2017 The 34th edition of the Palma Boat Show, the Balearic Islands’ largest on-water boat show, was hailed a huge success. With a 10% increase in exhibitors and 20% increase in boats on the water, the show also enjoyed a 10% increase in visitors compared to last year. As the main dealer of Prestige Yachts in the Balearics, the Ancasta Team was delighted to present the magnificent

Prestige 750, 450 and 500, which were all very well received. They also showed off a number of brokerage yachts including a Tecnomar Velvet 26, Catana 50 and Prestige 550. Our Palma Office Team was also on hand at the show to answer visitors’ questions about Ancasta International Boat Sales, our comprehensive brokerage portfolio and our new boat sales services.

EVENTS Swift Trawler Dartmouth 10 June 2017

The Swift Trawler Owners Group was founded in 2012 by owners with a common interest. The group currently has 11 boats as members, including one ST30, six ST34s and four ST44. This year saw the first ever gathering of members, in Dartmouth over the weekend of 9th and 10th of June. The rally had lots of support not least from Ancasta Darthaven, where the event was centred. It was great that the main reception was hosted by Ancasta in the Darthaven

facilities. Ancasta and Matthew laid on a fine spread with drinks. The one gift from Ancasta for the members that stood out was the pair of sun glasses with a built in bottle opener. It was also appreciated that Emma AlexanderFloyd from Ancasta Customer Care should take the time to come to meet our members. Friday night saw us at the Rock Fish Restaurant where the fish was excellent and the banter better. Saturday evening saw the AGM and dinner held at the Royal Dart Yacht Club, which proved to be the perfect venue. Again, Ancasta was generous in sponsoring a bottle of champagne for the raffle.

The Ancasta Motorboat Club Cruise to Honfleur 2017 Will’s first trip to France by sea (aged 15). When Mum and Dad told us about the trip to Honfleur, we all realised that this was a wonderful opportunity. All of our boat trips previously had been in coastal waters because Mum has always wanted to be able to see land! She was delighted that the boat trip started in Gunwharf Quays. We set off from the Hamble and Jon the skipper was fantasticteaching us new rope skills before we left and also how to best navigate the large ferries going into Portsmouth Harbour. We had not docked at Gunwharf before, which was great for shops and eating. Dad was delighted to be told that dinner was at 6pm as Mum only then had 35 mins to shop before dinner! Gunwharf was a great place to start, but very bouncy and noisy with boat traffic early in the morning. There was also an amazing thunder storm that woke everyone up apart from Mum and Raife who sleep through anything! On Saturday we left at 8.30a.m. and we were all worried that the weather was going to be too bad to go, so were delighted to hear Jon the skipper’s voice on the radio at 7am saying that it was good enough. Apart from a very small amount of rain, all 11 boats headed off in the cloudy warm weather. One of the smaller boats (Bertie) left

earlier due to its slower speed. We loved Bertie and were hoping to catch her up and see her at sea, but we never did as she got there first. The crossing was quite long, but very relaxing and a great time to have another sleep after the thunder. We saw an amazing cargo ship carrying huge cranes (although we had to get very close to work out they were cranes), and it looked like it would topple over at any moment. The sea was quite rough on the English side of the channel but after the middle it did become calmer. Le Havre was very industrial as we approached the mouth of the river Seine. It was difficult to imagine that Honfleur could be so beautiful. We had a large audience watching us as we went through the lock into Honfleur. We had to wait for a second lock opening as not all the boats could fit in one go and Jon the skipper persuaded the lock keeper to do two. It was so exciting to go through a lock. I loved it. After this we got fuel and then all moored up together, and it was perfect because it was only a couple of minutes’ walk into the Medieval town, which was full of nice shops and restaurants by the dock. The buildings looked like something out of Harry Potter. The food was very French but nice. I enjoyed the oysters. We spotted the beach on the way in, so we walked there and the sea was freezing but we

still made Dad swim. We also went paddle boarding but Dad had forgotten to pack the paddles so we had to borrow some from the Ancasta guys- Nick and Will, and a lady fell in whilst trying it out! She later told us that it was all done to get a picture to prove to her Grandson that she could paddle board. When the time came to go home we felt so sad. Jon the skipper wanted to get the 8.30 dock gate as the weather forecast for nearer home was not very good late in the day. The trip back was great because the sea was very calm although very windy in the Solent. The boats all looked fabulous travelling in convoy. When we were about half way back, one boat hit an obstruction in the water in the shipping lanes and it got caught on the starboard propeller. All of the boats were asked to stop by Jon the skipper as he gave them instructions about how to clear it on the radio. He thought it was a bag. That worked and everyone got underway again at the 22 knots. The trip took 5 hours and it is one that we will always always remember because everyone was so friendly- especially Nick, Will and Jon. We all learnt that we definitely want to go again and Mum said it helped with her boating confidence. We can’t wait for the next trip. By Will Browne.

Ker40+ Invictus wins FAST40+ Class Round 1 The Vice Admiral’s Cup This year’s Vice Admiral’s Cup saw a fantastic FAST40+ turn out with 11 teams from England, Germany, the Netherlands and Scotland jostling on the startline for what turned out to be a very tightly contested Solent regatta. After a variety of races consisting of tight windward/leewards and round the cans courses over three days and in an array of weather conditions, five teams scored race wins and an incredible nine teams scored podium finishes, which proves just how close the racing is in this ultra competitive fleet. But after eight close and intense races, it was the Ker 40+ ‘Invictus’ that came out on top with ‘42 South’ in second and ‘Silva Neo’ in third.

Cruiser Racing Guide

Top Tips “Upwind Trimming - Mainsail” Making sure your sails are trimmed to perfection will give you the best chance of sailing fast upwind and getting to the first mark in a good position. The mainsail, in particular, is extremely important and can have a huge affect on your speed, heel angle and heading, but with so many variables to consider and controls to adjust, it can be difficult to know what to use and when. We asked Kevin Sproul from Ultimate Sails to give us a few tips on how to get the most from your mainsail upwind. Head of sail design and engineering at Ultimate Sails and with many race wins under his belt including recently becoming J80 National Champion 2017, Kevin has lots of in depth knowledge and experience of how to get the very best performance out of your sails in any race situation.

Three States of Power

When trimming a mainsail it’s important to consider in what state of power you are sailing. Are you at optimum / maximum power, underpowered or overpowered? This will guide you in terms of what you want to achieve with the mainsail and how best to do it. Read on to find out about each of these stages in more detail…

Maximum Power Find the Sweet Spot

Every yacht will have a design wind speed where the sails are trimmed to generate the maximum power; the helm has the perfect balance, the heel angle is just right and the crew is fully hiked. This optimum power state could occur in anything from 7 to 15 knots depending on the design of your yacht so it’s important to find this sweet spot. It is better to think about maximum power in terms of heel angle rather than the wind speed as this helps to factor in wind gradient. By talking to your helmsman and finding the heel angle that they can handle before excessive weather helm sets in, you will be able to identify when you are at maximum power. When sailing at your maximum power, you should find that the boom is on the centre line and the aft end of the top batten will be parallel to it. Aim to stall the top tell tale 50-70% of the time but make

sure the next one down never stalls. The backstay will be on 25% to remove a little depth in the top of the main but your forestay tension is being generated largely by mainsheet tension. You are ideally still looking for some slight creasing out of the luff of the main, which indicates the correct amount of mast bend and will have no cunningham or vang on. If the water is choppy then you could ease the outhaul for more speed. Once you are happy with your max power set up, it’s a good idea to take note of your settings and calibrate everything so that you can repeat it again. This also gives you a good base point to refer to as you trim up and down the wind range.

Underpowered Keep the Air Flowing

If you are sailing in light winds and feel underpowered, it’s important to keep the wind flowing over the sail. The top tell tale is your best guide for this - aim to keep it flying, even in the very lightest conditions, and progressively increase the stall until you reach 50-70% maximum power. As the wind drops the main leech will close and the forestay will tighten, so give the mainsheet a little ease to open the top of the main and keep the top batten parallel to the boom. If the pressure stays light you can also try pulling in the traveller to bring the boom back to centreline. If the forestay gets too tight, ease the backstay to around 15%, although remember that this will close the main leech and require a little sheet ease. When you get to the point that you need to soften the forestay more than this, it’s time to go down a rig setting so that your usable backstay range will become 5-20% again. Always make small adjustments for good control - each trim change you make will have a primary effect, but also secondary implications. It is important to consider the

bigger picture as one adjustment might improve one aspect of your trim, but impair another.

Overpowered Trim to the Heel Angle

When the wind builds up and you become overpowered, aim to keep the boat at its optimum heel angle, depending on what you want to achieve. If you want to go higher, increase the power and if you want to go faster, depower to control the heel angle. As the wind builds and you move away from your maximum power state, the main leech will open and the forestay will sag more. A little snug on the backstay will bring the forestay back in check and open the main leech helping the boat to accelerate. If the pressure remains, then the main can be snugged a little amount to bring the batten back parallel with the boom and you can pull the outhaul to the band, but make sure to give it a little ease if the wind drops. As the pressure continues to build you can alternate dropping the traveller and increasing backstay tension. Keep monitoring the top batten and keep it parallel with the mainsheet. By the time the traveller gets down to the centre line the backstay will be at around 35% and the mainsail will be starting to get a little flat, which indicates it’s time to go up to the next rig setting. At this point you should also snug the cunningham but only to remove creases in the lower luff. If the main starts to backwind, increase mainsail twist so that the boom can be kept inside the quarter. This will keep the mainsail working rather than flapping. Once the traveller gets below the centre line the vang can be progressively tensioned to help control the mid leech and really flatten the bottom third of the main.

Calibrate, Record and Learn

By having clear targets for what you are trying to achieve in terms of forestay tension, mainsail depth and twist, you will be able to make the right adjustments and keep communication open amongst the crew. Record everything you learn about your boatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rig and trim settings so you can recreate the setup quickly for any conditions and compare your performance against previous results.

Rig Set Up

Rig tuning is essentially just trimming for your mast and it is worth spending time to get this right as it forms the basis for any rig adjustments you make up and down the wind range. You might be able to find this information in a tuning guide for your class, or your sailmaker should be able to give you some fast settings. A well set up rig will make it much easier to sail through the wind range and, rather than fighting the boat, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be able to make small adjustments to maintain top speed. The final 10% of speed will not be available to you with a poorly set up rig so it is worth spending the time to make sure it is right.

A good race

Overall, understanding mainsail trim and the impact it can have on your upwind performance is crucial to a good race. Finding your maximum power settings will give you a good benchmark from which to make adjustments according to the wind conditions, and lots of note taking will help you to improve race to race throughout the season. Every boat is different and it takes time to find the optimum mainsail settings for all of the different weather conditions and race formats, but if you put in the effort to fully understand your mainsail trim setup, it will pay dividends on the race track.

The Maiden Factor, anything is possible

27 years after she sailed into Southampton at the end of the 1989 Whitbread Round The World Race, Tracy Edward’s 58ft offshore racing yacht “Maiden” has returned home to Hamble Yacht Services for a major restoration project. “Maiden” was the 13th crew member of the all female sailing team who wowed the world with their incredible rise to success pulling together a yacht fit for the race with limited funds, securing sponsorship from King Hussein I of Jordan and going on to not only be the first all female team to compete in this iconic round the world sailing race, but to also finish a very impressive second overall. “Maiden” was sold at the end of the race to help pay for the costs, but she was recently discovered lying in the Seychelles in an awful state of disrepair. Edwards felt compelled to bring this incredible yacht, that had served her so well, back to life, and use her as a key promotional tool to help raise awareness of her Maiden Factor project. The boat will be restored to her former glory before embarking on a worldwide tour. Funded by HRH Princess Haya of Jordan in memory of her father King Hussein I, who funded Edward’s original Whitbread campaign, the Maiden Factor project is set to inspire women of all ages to not only get involved with sailing but to also set about making their dreams become a reality, whatever they are, under the premise of “anything is possible.” Maiden arrived home at HYS on 25th April and is undergoing major works in the same place in which Edwards and her team first worked on her over 27 years ago. Some of the original boatyard workers who helped launch “Maiden” in 1989 still work in the yard today and so they were delighted to see her return home to HYS for her transformation. Sea trials are planned for May 2018 with a launch in June 2018. You can follow the progress of the restoraion on our website.

A Reckmann hydraulic vang gives you maximum control over your boom. The ultra smooth and eﬃcient hydraulic system makes light work of moving the boom up and down to set the mainsail, so that you can take it easy and enjoy cruising in comfort. Alternatively, if you want fast, accurate control of your sail settings whilst out on the race course, a hydraulic boom vang could take your sail trimming to the next level. Choose from a range of pumps and controls that give you fast and accurate adjustment of your boom, including pre-programmable settings, and a quick-release control that allows you to dump any load from the vang instantly. Advances in hydraulic boom design and technology mean today’s Reckmann vangs are lightweight yet robust and strong making them suitable for cruisers and racing yachts alike.

Reckmann’s ‘Furl Finder’ automatically adjusts furling booms to make mainsail furling even easier. Simply press the furling button and the vang will automatically position itself in the best place for hassle free furling. Once in the right position, a green light indicates to the crew that the boom is ready to start furling. When at sea, the system works just like a normal push button hydraulic system to move the vang up or down as desired.

Our range of easy-to-use control panels allow you to control and adjust your hydraulic cylinders and boom vangs using one central pump. Available as single or multi-function and with manual or push-button operation, a selector valve gives you eﬀortless control of up to four functions. Electric Hydraulic Operating Systems Our extremely compact Reckmann electric pumps are compatible with high-pressure hydraulic rigging systems or as an upgrade to existing manual systems. Connected to a push-button control panel with electric or manual release, the 12V or 24V units power backstays, outhauls and vangs. Emergency Rig Cutters Remote-Operated Rod Rigging Cutters Cutting a rig is hazardous, but it may be essential in preventing further damage to a yacht and to avert crew injury or even loss of life. For emergency situations, Reckmann has developed a special range of remote-operated cutters with blades designed for rod rigging up to -115 (22.2 mm). The cutters lock onto the rig and remain in place unattended, whilst a hydraulic hand pump connected by a three metre hose allows the operator to stand back to cut the rig. This provides a much safer way to cut a rig that is under tension and protects the user from any loose or ﬂying rigging. Supplied in a waterproof protective case with wheels and retractable handle, it is also easy to stow and move around.

Mike Christie is well-versed on the subject of all things boat and sea related. Mike has ample experience of both performance and cruising sailboats. Buying his first boat, a Bavaria, in 2007, Mike has since owned several yachts including a Hanse 400 as well as a variety of performance race yachts including a J/92 and J/80. Having raced in and around the Solent for many years, both inshore and offshore, Mike now enjoys cruising and relaxing on his Jeanneau sailboat. As a boat owner himself, Mike can offer firsthand insight into yacht ownership and inherently understands what buyers are looking for when searching for their next boat. Sean Noble heads up the Ancasta Swanwick Office. Having worked in boat brokerage since 1986, Sean has helped boat owners to sell their vessels, and buyers to find the boat of their dreams for over 30 years. Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017 Gets Underway

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Round Britain 2017 event successfully set sail from the Trust’s base in Largs in May this year. The 2,400 mile voyage will see over 100 young people join this incredible sailing rally around the British Isles, stopping at over 60 towns and ports to raise awareness of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and the marvellous work that they do. Speaking to supporters in Largs Sailing Club in advance of the voyage, Ellen said, “Round Britain 2017 gives us the ability to take the message of the Trust, but most importantly the young

During the Summer of 2007 Nicholas Hall returned to the place of his childhood near the village of Marden in Kent to establish a vineyard and winery. He chose a unique ten-acre parcel of land that has been farmed by his family for four generations, having been originally settled by his greatgrandfather, Herbert Hall, in the 19th Century. This warm, sheltered site was the first land that Herbert owned and he always maintained that it produced the earliest and best fruit of any site that he ever

farmed. Today as a vineyard, with its gravel-seamed clay soil and sunny, south-facing slope, Herbert’s belief holds true; planted with Chardonnay (40%), Pinot Noir (30%) and Pinot Meunier (30%). The winery produces hand-made, site-specific sparkling wines that express the soil and meso-climate of the vineyard. Nicholas is inspired by the sustainable artisan techniques that his great grandfather would have known and is committed to low-yields and the use of physical labour and manual canopy management rather than chemicals to produce fruit of natural ripeness, intensity and flavour. He named the wine Herbert Hall in honour of his great grandfather. Alongside Nicholas, the winemaking team comprises Peter Morgan and Kirsty Smith. Together they are concerned with capturing the distinctive quality of the fruit, grown organically in this unique corner of the Garden of England. Herbert Hall wines are typically elegant, with intense fruit on the palate and a fine, silky mousse. Whole-bunch pressing is slow and gentle with cuvée and taille fractions separated by variety. Temperature controlled primary fermentation takes place in steel tanks with 10% of the chardonnay fermented separately in oak barrels. Cold stabilisation and blending are carried out during the winter before bottling for secondary fermentation in the Spring. Wine is matured on lees for 18 months before riddling and disgorging. Herbert Hall is a small production, sparkling wine, with each bottle individually hand-dated and initialed on release. It has been one of the English wine industry’s great success stories, earning a place on many of England’s top wine lists and receiving exceptional praise from leading critics.
