Sanlorenzo SP110 wins

prestigious design award

Sanlorenzo’s SP110 model won the prestigious Compasso d’Oro 2024 design award during a ceremony at the ADI Design Museum in Milan.

The international jury for the global design award praised the SP110 for its exceptional combination of Made in Italy design, high performance, and focus on sustainability – distinctive traits of the Italian Sanlorenzo shipyard.

Established by Gio Ponti in 1954, the Compasso d’Oro celebrates virtuous projects that combine quality, innovation, and cultural impact – not just the most popular or most visually appealing designs.

Extremely selective, the Compasso d’Oro has only awarded just over 370 acknowledgements in its 70-year history, underscoring the prestigious nature of the accolade.

The international jury awarded the Compasso d’Oro to the cutting-edge yacht, following a two-year scientific selection process which involved a permanent multidisciplinary observatory of about 150 experts.

Cannes Yachting Festival, Genoa Boat Show and Monaco Yacht Show

Sanlorenzo Yachts UK is delighted to be presenting the very best of Sanlorenzo at the Cannes Yachting Festival, Genoa Boat Show and Monaco Yacht Show this autumn.

Highlights include the world debut of two brand-new models from Sanlorenzo, the SL86A and SP92, at the Cannes Yachting Festival. These exceptional yachts will also be available to view at the Genoa Boat Show, Sanlorenzo’s home show, and a phenomenal celebration of yachting.

Additionally, Sanlorenzo’s recently launched 50Steel - the world’s first superyacht with a Green Methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system - is a must-see model at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Sanlorenzo SL86A

WORLD LAUNCH – Cannes Yachting Festival

The SL86A expands Sanlorenzo’s pioneering Asymmetric range. This bold approach to the traditional design of a yacht of this size sees the port side deck moved up a level, substantially increasing the interior volume to allow a full beam master on the main deck as well as expanding the saloon to amplify the connection to the sea through the floor to ceiling windows.

Sanlorenzo SP92

WORLD LAUNCH – Cannes Yachting Festival

The second boat in Sanlorenzo’s SP (Smart Performance) line, the SP92 is designed for those seeking a combination of style and performance. Powered by twin MTU jets, it delivers a smooth and efficient cruising experience.

McConaghy Multihulls Launches Second MC75

This is the second of two brand-new MC75 sailing multihulls to be launched out of the McConaghy Boats factory in Hong Kong in the past year.

With generous living quarters and impressive sailing capabilities, all within 24 meters, the MC75 excels in efficiency, space, and style, and promises exhilarating multihull adventures for all the family.

As with all catamarans from McConaghy Multihulls, this vessel is highly customised to the owner’s preferences, including the striking azure-blue hulls.

Retractable Windows

Fully retractable windows and floor-to-ceiling glass create the perception of freedom, with an infinite amount of visual space afforded to the owner and an enhanced, symbiotic relationship between inside and out. The internal volume is optimised to ensure every space has a distinct purpose in a layout that dispels all preconceptions of yacht interiors.

Transforming Marine Propulsion

Introducing McConaghy’s Green Methanol Fuel Cell System

Imagine setting sail on a performance cruising multihull, where only the whisper of the wind and the quiet hum of an electric engine powered by one of the cleanest energy sources can be heard. This peaceful scene is now possible with McConaghy Multihulls’ new Methanol Fuel Cell onboard power system.

Embracing cutting-edge green methanol technology, McConaghy’s revolutionary fuel cells power all onboard electrics, including electric propulsion, providing more efficient and quieter energy production without limiting your cruising range.

By combining this with solar panels, you can say goodbye to dirty diesel engines and generators and hello to eco-friendly and low-emission sailing adventures. The adoption of green methanol can significantly reduce your carbon footprint, too, ensuring a more sustainable and responsible approach to multihull cruising.

How Methanol Fuel Cells Work

The magic behind McConaghy’s methanol fuel cell involves a transformative process where methanol is converted into a hydrogen-rich fuel gas, known as reformate.

This reformate is directed to the anode while air is supplied to the cathode. Within the high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell, a catalyst splits the hydrogen molecules into protons and electrons.

These particles then take separate paths to the cathode, with the electrons travelling through an external circuit, thereby generating a flow of electricity.

This progressive method not only provides a sustainable power source for all onboard electronics, including an electric engine, but also stimulates a greener cruising experience.

Versatile Onboard Energy Management

McConaghy’s Methanol Fuel Cell system can be used in a variety of ways to make life onboard more pleasurable and kinder to the environment.

Main Power Supply

When used as the main power supply, the methanol fuel cell can supply power to an electric engine via the E1 Electrified Performance System developed by EVOA Propulsion.

Auxiliary Power Supply

In this set up, the methanol fuel cell powers all onboard living utilities including appliances, electronics, refrigeration, and more.

Domestic Heating

The heat generated while using the fuel cell can provide warm air and hot water onboard.

Fire Prevention

The oxygen content in the cathode exhaust gas of fuel cells is about 11-14%, which can provide a low-oxygen environment for the cargo hold of flammable goods and actively prevent fires. In a low-oxygen environment with normal temperature and pressure and oxygen volume fraction lower than 16.8%, combustibles generally cannot be ignited.

Benefits of Green Methanol Fuel Cells

High Specific Energy

McConaghy’s innovative dual-electric onboard system combines a methanol fuel cell and a lithium battery, leveraging the high specific energy of the fuel cell and the high specific power of the battery. This synergy results in a specific energy greater than 1000Wh/kg and a specific power exceeding 500W/kg, offering remarkable performance and efficiency.

Improved Safety

As a fuel, methanol is safer than gasoline due to its lower flammability, explosiveness, and toxicity. When in use, the methanol fuel cell manages the average power load, while the lithium battery handles only instantaneous excessive loads. This results in a low overall load, minimal heat generation, and enhanced safety.

Low Carbon Emissions

Methanol fuel cells boast double the working efficiency of traditional gasoline and diesel engines. Utilising fossil methanol can reduce carbon emissions by 40%, and the adoption of green methanol can achieve near-zero emissions, significantly minimising the environmental impact.

Cost Efficiencies

The cost of electricity generated by methanol fuel cells is approximately 0.15 EUR/kWh. This is significantly cheaper compared to the 0.3 EUR/kWh for diesel generators and the 0.45 EUR/kWh for hydrogen fuel cells. This cost advantage makes methanol fuel cells a highly economical choice for onboard power.

(These calculations are based on the respective prices of the fuels: hydrogen at 7.6 EUR/kg, diesel at 1.2 EUR/kg, and methanol at 0.32 EUR/kg.)

E1 Electrified Performance System developed by EVOA Propulsion

By combining Axial Flux Motors with state-of-the-art components, proprietary ECOFLUX software and industryleading 800V architecture, EVOA Propulsion has developed an electric E1 System to provide exceptional drive.

A revolution in electrified marine propulsion, the E1 System delivers more performance, efficiency and versatility than rival systems. High torque densities coupled with highenergy density batteries results in quicker acceleration and planing, excellent throttle response, and phenomenal top-speeds.

Hannah Diamond, AC40 Trimmer onboard GBR Athena Pathway, competing in the Puig Women’s America’s Cup

“The AC40 is really unlike any other boat I’ve sailed. The boat reaches 40 knots effortlessly, and you soon feel at home reaching those speeds from the comfort of your seat! The hydraulic trim controls mean you have total control of the sail shape at the touch of a button, and the unique set-up with two drivers and two trimmers separated by the mainsail is a new and fun challenge to ensure you are working as one group.”

AC40 teams prepare for takeoff as the UniCredit Youth and inaugural Puig Women’s America’s Cup events near ever closer.

Barcelona’s waterfront and the golden sands of the nearby St Miguel, Barceloneta and Somorrostro beaches have been awash with spectators vying to capture a glimpse of the high-octane action of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup this summer.

It’s Formula One on the water, with rockstar sailors completing jaw-dropping manoeuvres on super high-tech foiling AC75 raceboats developed specifically to compete for the ‘Auld Mug’ ’— sailing and international sport’s oldest trophy.

As the most iconic yacht racing event globally, the America’s Cup attracts the best of the best from the world of sailing. To be involved, you must be at the top of your game; there is no second place.

Poised to be standout features of this prestigious event are the UniCredit Youth (17-26 September) and Puig Women’s (5-13 October) America’s Cup competitions. Attracting the finest youth and female sailors from around the globe, from Olympians to ocean racers, teams from twelve nations will do battle as they strive for victory in intense fleet and head-tohead match racing in one-design AC40 foiling raceboats.

McConaghy Boats Prowess

When the new America’s Cup Women’s and Youth Regatta teams take to the water this September, they’ll be flying the AC40, built by McConaghy Boats – a scaled down version of the AC75 America’s Cup boats.

Underpinned by over 50 years’ boat building experience, McConaghy Boats’ dedication to excellence across its range of high performance racing yachts, fully customisable luxury multihulls and powercats is unparalleled.

Consistently at the forefront of composite technology, McConaghy worked with some of the world’s best race yacht designers to build some of the most technically advanced race yachts in the world, before being approached by Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ) to build the AC40 for the 37th America’s Cup teams.

With speed predictions of close to 50 knots on the water in front of the revitalised Port Olímpic, this One-Design foiling monohull demanded a design and build which would withstand loads and stresses that would have been unthinkable in a 40-foot yacht a few years ago.

Battery power replaces the need for multiple grinders, and with a self-tacking headsail the yacht is sailed by just two helmsmen and two trimmers, while an autopilot control system maintains stable flight so the crews can focus purely on speed and tactics.

Showcasing the absolute forefront of sailing technology, the standardised controls, sails, foils, and mechanisms ensure a level playing field, placing the spotlight on crew coordination, strategic maneuvering, and foiling technique – as opposed to which teams have the biggest budgets.

AC40 Testpilots

The AC40s have been put through their paces by some of the best sailors in the world in preparation for the America’s Cup. And after proving their might as America’s Cup training vessels as the designated class for the preliminary regattas, the Youth and Women’s teams have been honing their skills, ready to race at supersonic speeds.

To prepare for these events, crew have devoted significant time familiarising themselves with the boats’ controls and undergoing rigorous training sessions in AC40 simulators. There’s no doubt that the combination of high-speed foiling and the crews’ expertise will result in exhilarating and closely contested competition on the racecourse in Barcelona.

Opportunity to Fly

If flying across the water at adrenaline-inducing speeds sounds appealing, it’s now infinitely possible.

McConaghy Boats, in partnership with Emirates Team New Zealand (ETNZ), is offering individuals the opportunity to fly with the purchase of an AC40, bringing the cutting-edge technology and unparalleled performance synonymous with the America’s Cup to private owners for the first time in sailing history.

With interest already expressed by numerous private owners and the first build contract signed, an exhilarating one-design race series is in development. So instead of having to vie for a glimpse of the highoctane on-water action – yacht racing thrill-seekers could be right there in the middle of it.

Buying a Boat Step by Step

Buying a boat is often a big commitment and significant investment, so careful preparation and planning are key to a smooth buying experience. This is especially so when buying a boat for the first time.

From appointing a boat broker and planning your finance options to advice on how to pick the right boat, making an offer and preparing for hassle-free boat ownership, this is our comprehensive guide to buying a boat.

Our trained and experienced yacht brokers are also here to help you through the process and answer any extra questions you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact your local Ancasta Office to discuss your requirements.

Appoint a Professional Yacht Broker

We highly recommend buying a boat through a professionally accredited (ABYA) yacht broker. Certified agents will take time to understand all of your needs and wants and will run a customised search to find the best boat to match your requirements. They will also handle all of the negotiations, paperwork and financial transactions.

Research Different Kinds of Boat

Do as much research as possible before looking for a boat to buy. Whether you’re buying a sailing yacht or motorboat, familiarise yourself with different types of boats and a variety of brands before narrowing your search down to a few models that best fit your preferred boating lifestyle. If you are unsure what kind of boat you need or want, our professional yacht brokers can provide lots of useful information and guidance.

Set Your Budget

Once you know what kind of boat you want to buy, you’ll need to set a budget. We are often asked how much it costs to buy a boat, but with so many options on the market, it will depend on what you are looking for. Our professional yacht brokers can advise on what kind of budget you need to buy the boat you want. You can also use Ancasta’s Online Boat Search to get an idea of the quality of boat you can expect to get for your budget.

Consider Finance Options

Buying a boat is a significant investment, so you may wish to consider various finance options to help manage the purchase and spread the payments. From borrowing money for part of the cost, or part exchanging your existing yacht, to investing in a charter scheme, there are many different plans to choose from.

View Boats Online and in Person

Spend time browsing yachts for sale online and take note of all of the detailed specifications. This is the best way to create a shortlist of your favourite boats for sale. Once you have your wishlist, we strongly urge you to view your favourite boats in person. There’s no better way to get a feel for whether a yacht is right for you and gives you the opportunity to inspect it thoroughly.

Make an Offer

When you find a boat that you would like to buy, consult with your yacht broker to come up with a suitable offer. Vendors are sometimes open to negotiating the price, but there’s a delicate balance between agreeing on a fair price and causing offence to the current owner. An experienced yacht agent will be able to help establish what the yacht is truly worth and what they think the vendor will be willing to accept.

Get a Marine Survey

When you make an offer on a used boat, we advise making it ‘subject to survey' and ensuring you have that survey carried out by a professional who is a member of the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA). A boat survey can highlight possible issues that may occur in the future and ensure peace of mind that the vessel is as the seller says it is.

Organise Boat Insurance

Insuring your new boat is an essential part of boat ownership. As well as cover for loss and accidental damage for your boat, you may also need legal liabilities cover for guests and crew, and emergency medical cover. Furthermore, a more comprehensive policy will be required for commercial vessels. Ancasta can put you in contact with several Marine Insurance companies to help you find the best policy for your needs.

Prepare Paperwork and Pay the Deposit

Once you have an offer accepted, the boat buying transaction process begins. You’ll usually be asked to pay a 10% deposit into your broker’s Client Account. Then, your broker will ask for copies of all the original ownership paperwork to check that everything is in order. If satisfied that everything is as it should be, you’ll be asked to pay the remaining purchase funds into your broker’s Client Account, ready for the final exchange.

Plan New Boat Commissioning

When purchasing a new boat, you may have the opportunity to customise the final specifications. This could include things like the colour of the topsides, electronic systems, furniture veneers, upholstery fabrics, appliances, covers, passerelles, bow thrusters, and much more. If you buy a new boat from Ancasta, we have a dedicated commissioning team to guide you through the process of specifying a boat to your exact requirements.

Book Berthing / Storage

Ahead of the purchase, it’s a good idea to secure berthing or storage ashore for your new boat. There are many different options to consider, including marina berthing, mooring buoys or storage ashore. Each of these has its own pros and cons, and prices vary wildly depending on where your boat is located, so it’s worth shopping around.

Organise Boat Maintenance

All boats require ongoing care and maintenance, so it’s worth considering this ahead of your purchase. You may choose to look after your boat yourself, or many owners will enlist professional assistance to keep on top of everything. Our sister company, Ancasta Yacht Services, has a professional yacht care team who will ensure your boat performs at its best, giving you more time to enjoy time on the water.

Plan Refits and Upgrades

If you are buying a used boat that needs a refit, or want to upgrade some of the systems, plan this ahead of completion so the work can start immediately. Some of the most common yacht refit and repair projects include teak deck restoration, bow thruster installation, new boat covers, topside painting, and electronics upgrades. You may wish to carry out some of these jobs yourself, but if you’re unsure, it’s worth hiring a professional yacht services company to complete the tasks and provide a warranty.

Invest in Skipper and Crew Training

Skipper and crew training will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to operate your new boat with confidence and in a safe manner. Courses are readily available all over the UK and abroad, and your yacht broker will also be able to guide you on which courses will be most beneficial for your experience level.

Handover Day

Once all of the paperwork has been done and the final payment cleared, the boat will be handed over to you, and you can begin your new boating adventure! But if you’re buying your boat through Ancasta, our relationship with you doesn’t stop there. Ancasta is committed to supporting you throughout the lifetime of your boat ownership through our comprehensive boat care provider, Ancasta Yacht Services. We will also be on hand should you want to sell your boat in the future.

The IMOCA Revolution FOR SALE

High speed, big distances and close racing. The IMOCA concept has evolved dramatically over the past ten years...

Originating from an open rule design in the 1980s to deliver a platform for the epic Vendée Globe – a non-stop, no outside assistance, solo around the world race - it has evolved over ten 4-year cycles to a more structured box rule class. Now used for all the world’s major solo, twohanded and fully-crewed oceanic races, including the Transat Jacques Vabre, Route du Rhum and The Ocean Race, the IMOCA class is the place to be.

Today, the IMOCA class is a 60-foot racing platform mostly made up of cuttingedge foil-borne high-speed monohulls. The beauty of this class now is that the same boat can compete across all three disciplines of offshore racing –singlehanded, two-handed and fully-crewed. When raced fully-crewed, the roster is made up of four sailing crew, including at least one woman and two nationalities, along with a non-assisting fifth person, the On Board Reporter (OBR). The most recent two-handed transatlantic race, the 2023 Transat Jacques Vabre, saw 39 starters from 17 countries, and the 2024 New YorkVendée singlehanded transatlantic race saw 28 starters from 11 different countries.

Forty boats will start the 2024 Vendée Globe this year. No other class comes close.

Across the ten editions of the epic, non-stop, singlehanded Vendée Globe race - sailing West to East via the three Capes - course records have been bettered each time by, on average, four days. In 1989, the first boat took just over 109 days to make it around non-stop, while the current record stands at 74 days and a handful of hours. In the 1989 race, the best 24 hour run by the winner was 304 miles. In the last edition of The Ocean Race, the best 24 hour run was just five miles short of 600 miles!!

The evolution of the competition’s popularity has seen sailing technology driven hard towards progress and development. Naval architecture and all its modern engineering sub-disciplines, composite materials use, and boatbuilding methods, all within a vast and powerful ecosystem of smaller offshore shorthanded classes, has transformed this once-niche French racing scene into the flagship of global offshore racing attracting many competitive non-French teams.

And with that comes increased media attention. Sailing solo around the world

is not what IMOCA racing is all about anymore. The fully-crewed configuration has resulted in the boats being sailed harder, manoeuvres becoming more frequent, and sails being trimmed accurately around the clock. When coupled with the major event organisers’ communications plans, this makes for hugely exciting racing, engaging fans for longer across all the modern social media outlets. Sailing lends itself well to this game, and the IMOCA class races have taken this to another level.

The most recent Vendée Globe (20202021) took place during various COVID restrictions, and with football, motorsport, rugby, and tennis all put on hold, the race, the only active sporting competition taking place, received a remarkable upturn in following and promotion. The Vendée Globe, by definition a socially distanced sporting competition, took centre stage for three whole months. Daily live shows featuring updates and interviews with the sailors in two languages stood out as the best TV and social media sports shows to watch. As a result, several solo sailors soon became household names worldwide, and some foreign skippers

still can’t walk down the street in their hometowns without being mobbed by fans!

Although always commercially successful in France, since the 2020 event, more global recognition of the sailors’ incredible feats has delivered significantly better returns on investment for sponsors and technical partners alike and generated much more interest in the next race, which starts on 10 November 2024.

The advent of crewed sailing and the adoption of the IMOCA class by The Ocean Race has led to many new races appearing on the calendar, too. The varied programme represents incredible value for professional or semi-professional IMOCA teams wanting to participate in high-speed, fully-crewed, and shorthanded racing. This is a class of boat that can be used for many types of events. And there’s certainly plenty in store over the next three years...

The schedule starts in June 2025, with an 1850-mile race around the British Isles starting and finishing in Boulogne-surMer on the French Channel coast. IMOCA crews can look forward to a challenging week-long race. The Rolex Fastnet Race follows this in late July 2025. Traditionally sailed two-handed by the IMOCA fleet, two divisions – two-handed and fully crewed - will likely be required for the 51st edition of the race, which takes place just ahead of The Ocean Race Europe. Starting in Kiel, Germany, in late August, The Ocean Race Europe will visit five Western European ports, finishing deep within the Mediterranean in late September 2025. Teams then have the choice to continue sailing fully-crewed races – Malta’s October

Middle Sea Race, the Canary Islands’ December RORC Transatlantic Race, Antigua’s February Rolex Caribbean 600, and The Ocean Race’s inaugural West to East Transatlantic Race starting from New York in September 2026 – or alternating with the short-handed programme with Le Havre’s November 2025 two-handed classic Transat Jacques Vabre, Les Sables d’Olonne’s singlehanded Vendée Arctic Race around Iceland in June 2026, and then the French Singlehanded Classic Route du Rhum race from St Malo to Guadeloupe in October 2026.

This then brings us nicely around to the next edition of The Ocean Race, scheduled to start in January 2027 from Alicante in Spain. This itinerant fully-crewed race with stopovers in South Africa, South and North America, and several different parts of Europe brings the two parts of the fleet together for one of the most competitive of around the world races in existence today and a magnificent goal for sailors to aim for and compete in.

At the conclusion of The Ocean Race in early July 2027, boats will be refitted and put back into a shorthanded configuration, ready for the final 12-month build-up to the 2028 Vendée Globe.

This busy calendar of events creates a lot of work for the sailors and the teams working behind the scenes to prepare the boats. From the skipper and crew to the boat captain, shore crew, design office, communications, logistics, commercial and administrative staff, along with project managers, composite experts, electronics and systems specialists, riggers, and one or two interns - it takes a well-oiled team to keep a successful IMOCA project running competitively.

On average, for every hour of sailing, 100 man hours of work are required to ensure the yacht remains at peak performance and is ready and in the right place for the next event on the calendar.

Not all of this happens afloat, of course. In Lorient, teams operate from large

IMOCA-sized hangars, with associated specialist workshops and office spaces. Seven new boats are already in the planning and construction stage for the start of the next 4-year cycle.

ADVENS1

If this has sparked your interest in solo or fully-crewed foiling offshore racing, we are delighted to present the opportunity to purchase IMOCA 60 “ADVENS 1”, formerly known as ‘For The Planet’ and ‘Linked Out’.

Exclusively for sale with Ancasta Race boats, this successful IMOCA won the IMOCA Globe series in 2023 with Sam Goodchild at the helm. A 2019 Guillaume Verdier design, it is without question, one of the most competitive designs in the fleet with thousands of design, engineering and optimisation hours invested to get her to the very front of the fleet and achieve victory in the world’s most famous offshore fleet.

ADVENS 1 is currently prepared, managed and campaigned by the TRR team (Thomas Ruyant Racing Team) and is a highly professional outfit in every sense, which will open up opportunity for the future owner of ADVENS 1.

Firmly positioned as one of the most proven boats in the IMOCA fleet, both in the hands of Thomas Ruyant when she was known as LINKED OUT and more recently as FOR THE PLANET with Sam Goodchild at the helm, this boat has not only been proven as a single handed machine, but also taken race wins in double handed format and, of particular note as a “fully crewed” boat during the last OCEAN RACE EUROPE event, opening up more and more opportunities for this IMOCA campaign.

ADVENS 1 will be available after the 2024 Vendee Globe.

As with many classic yachts, Cariad has endured highs and lows since her launch in 1896; she’s been through periods of winning trophies at the finest regattas, hosting royalty around her saloon table, and taking adventurers on round-the-world voyages. However, more than once, she has sadly fallen into disrepair in corners of remote boatyards, abandoned to the elements, and a far cry from the glory she was launched into. This year, Spencer Rigging has played a part alongside a dedicated team spanning the continents to bring Cariad back to life and take to the waves again.

A little history

When first launched, Cariad was the largest yacht that Summers and Payne had ever designed and built. As her masts were first stepped in Southampton Docks, it was clear she was a thing of beauty to thrill on the water and turn heads on the shore. Her first owner, The Earl of Dunraven, saw out the 19th Century sailing Cariad in the Mediterranean and the Solent and in 1898 she won the Vasco da Gama Cup, a 10,000nm race from Lisbon around the Cape of Good Hope to India.

Further stretching her sea legs, Cariad was renamed Fidra for her first circumnavigation sailed by Sune Tamm from Sweden, she then became based in Cape Town with owner Henry J Wenborn, who returned her name to Cariad I. After the Second World War, Cariad I was taken by her then-owner, South African A.W. Flitton, to the Caribbean and then on two further circumnavigations. As the 1960s and 1970s came around, Cariad sailed primarily out of Durban and made headlines in the 1971 Cape2Rio race as she limped into Table Bay after getting caught in a storm and a crew member washed overboard but was thankfully recovered.

In the 1980s, following several years of chartering in the West Indies, it was decided to completely gut Cariad I, a process starting in Antigua and completed by Southampton Yacht Services. Refreshed, she returned to competing at Cowes Week in 1983, before her next owners took her to the Mediterranean.

The Pacific beckoned again in 1987,

Traditional Techniques Bring Life to a Legend

and Cariad was acquired by the Japanese Corporation, embarking on an epic voyage to reach Japan. The trip took its toll and subsequently, Cariad I was left abandoned in Taiwan in 1993 as the corporation was falling into bankruptcy. The Japan Charter Yacht Association stepped in to save her with funds raised from their members and extensive repairs were carried out in Singapore including replacing the broken main mast brought all the way from England. She became the flagship for several years, before she was once again left to the elements, discovered derelict in a Bangkok anchorage in 2005 by a British businessman Stuart Williamson. It was hoped he had the money and passion to restore Cariad and the project commenced in 2006 in Thailand led by Des Kearns. Tragically for Cariad, after the 2008 financial crash, Williamson was forced to sell, and more neglect followed. From 2008 to 2021, Cariad lay without maintenance in Raffles Marina, Singapore, and her condition continuously deteriorated. “12 years in the water without drydocking took its toll.” said Des, project manager for the 2006-2008 refit. “To describe the devastation to our previous workmanship, the word disappointment is an understatement.”

Re-building a thing of beauty

In 2021 shipping magnate Tim Hartnoll rode in on his white horse and rescued Cariad I. Once again, Des Kearns found himself with the opportunity to work with a passionate owner with the funds and dream to restore the magnificent yacht to her former glory. “Projects like this bring out the best in people because they are doing something exciting and worthwhile.”

Says Hartnoll. “It attracts enthusiasts but being an enthusiast and a skilled artisan is not enough. The person must be an artist as well. If the team en masse are not artists, the project will fail.”

Cariad was returned to the PSS Marina in Thailand and Des Kearns set about assembling and reassembling his artists, many of whom had been involved in the previous refit. Expertise came from all across the world including British Naval Architect Paul Spooner and Australian Boat Restorer Mike Howett.

Highly skilled local labour once again picked up their tools. From seeing much of their work undone following the 2006-2008 refit, Des vowed to ‘Build Back Better’ to give Cariad the best opportunity to have a long career on the ocean waves again. Her full restoration has been meticulously documented at cariad1986.com providing a fascinating insight into the materials, techniques and workmanship that has gone into the project.

When it came to the rigging, working on the longest and oldest gaff ketch in the world was always going to be a sizeable task, with the team at Paul Spooner Design working closely with Spencer Rigging to develop a faithful and durable plan utilising traditional techniques.

Twenty different assemblies were commissioned, from the bobstay to the topmast forestay, each hand-measured, cut and finished with fittings. In total, nearly 450 meters of rigging was completed, using a combination of 1x19, 1x36 and 7x7 stainless steel wire. On the spans and forestay strop the wires were hand spliced, served and leathered using traditional techniques in order to retain the historic look of this wonderful classic yacht.

An award-winning result

As the project neared completion and Cariad took to the waves with the stunning backdrop of the islands of Thailand, it was clear all those hours the team had spent on her paid off.

The result was a majestic sight, just as intended when she was first launched 127 years ago. In February, the judging panel of the coveted World Superyacht Awards visited Des and his team, and Cariad was nominated in the Rebuilt Classic Yachts category. Winning the award was the icing on the cake for Des Kearns and the team.

Looking ahead, the owner’s overall plan is to race Cariad in the Mediterranean classic regattas, and a potential round-the-world voyage may be on the horizon again fuelled by Kym Clayton, granddaughter of Al Flitton who owned and circumnavigated on Cariad from 1952–1954.

Yacht Upgrades & Transformations

From on-deck upgrades to interior modifications, Ancasta Yacht Services (AYS) is committed to helping you customise your yacht to best suit your cruising adventures.

Offering bespoke solutions that cater to your individual needs, the AYS team has a wealth of experience creating luxurious yet functional spaces to enhance your time on the water.

Thinking of renovating your yacht this season? Here are just a few yacht transformations to inspire you.

Prestige 590: Crafting a Luxurious Ensuite

Our experienced boatbuilders are skilled in transforming yacht interiors with built-in storage solutions, bespoke joinery, interior redesigns, and galley refits. For example, the owner of a Prestige 590 asked AYS to convert a walk-in wardrobe into a full ensuite bathroom with a shower, seamlessly blending it with the yacht’s existing aesthetic. By removing the wardrobe’s access door from the forward cabin and relocating the entrance aft, Ancasta Yacht Services created a luxurious and spacious ensuite for the port cabin. The result is a harmonious blend of privacy and comfort.

Lagoon 55: Innovative Storage Solutions

Ancasta Yacht Services specialises in creating customised onboard storage solutions. In a recent project, our client, an avid diver, wanted all of his diving equipment to be stowed safely onboard his new Lagoon Catamaran. So, AYS modified the forward sail locker by installing a series of smart and functional storage units. The team also installed a diving air compressor in the lazarette to refill the bottles. These new features optimised the onboard space and ensured convenient access to equipment and supplies. The thoughtful design integrates perfectly with the yacht’s overall look, offering both practicality and style.

Bespoke Motor Yacht: Teak Deck Installation

The appeal of a well-crafted teak deck is undeniable. Whether it’s a complete deck refurbishment, caulking repairs, or the installation of low-maintenance teak alternatives, our skilled team delivers exceptional teak deck services. A recent project involved the installation of a traditional teak deck on a bespoke motor yacht, enhancing the vessel’s aesthetic and providing a durable, long-lasting finish.

Nautitech Open 40: Engine Service and Repair

With a well-equipped engineering workshop and mobile repair facilities, Ancasta Yacht Services offers a comprehensive list of engineering services, including engine servicing and rebuilds. A notable project involved a major service on a Nautitech Open 40, where the team replaced the main diaphragms of the Volvo Penta engine. As approved agents for commissioning Volvo Penta engines and IPS drives for new boats in our fleet, AYS ensures the highest standards in marine engineering.

A summer to remember

“Cancer is so serious, and so are hospitals and all the conversations about being unwell. Sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust and having a laugh with everyone, having fun again, it’s just really nice.”

When Amber, 25, said this earlier in the summer, she summed up how hundreds of young people feel with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust every year. They trade the medicine, the appointments, and the hospitals, for new friends, hilarious memories, and the return of joy.

Between May and September, some 700 young people will have enjoyed a sailing or outdoor adventure across the UK with the charity – more than ever before. On these trips, they meet others who have been through something similar to what they’ve been through, often for the first time.

Cancer in young people affects more than just their physical health. It is isolating, it affects their mental wellbeing, and it sets them back in their education and their careers.

But we often forget it also affects something lots of us take for granted: having fun.

‘Happiest person alive’

What better vehicle to rediscover that than a yacht? Readers of this magazine will know how it feels to be out on the water. The freedom it brings, the peace of being at sea, the thrill of catching the wind.

Most of the young people supported by the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust will never have sailed before. Some may never have even been to the coast. It is outside of their comfort zone and an entirely new experience.

When Katie Jo, 18, spent five days sailing around the Firth of Clyde with the charity, she said she felt like the ‘happiest person alive’. She never thought she’d be able to steer a boat, she had never seen seals, porpoises or minke whales before, and, for the first time, she met someone else who’d had a brain tumour – her ‘tumour twin’.

Before, she would sit in her bedroom upset about not knowing anyone else like her. Now, she describes herself as being ‘literally the most outgoing person’ and feels able to take on whatever life throws at her. She says she is proud of herself.

A brighter life

There are many benefits to sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Young people gain a new sense of purpose and self-worth, they rediscover their independence, they realise what they are capable of. They feel inspired to believe in a brighter future.

A lot of that comes from the fun they have on board. After Shaheed, 25, came on his first trip, he felt calmer and friendlier, ‘a generally better person to be around’. His mood spread, touching his family and his work, and ‘life just seemed a lot brighter than it used to be’.

Scan the code or visit ancasta.com/EMCTvideo

Describing his second trip, it is a list of all the things that brought him joy: a boat-to-boat water fight, gliding through the water with the wind in the sails, helming, joking with his crew, the peace when the sea is still. An adventure lasting a matter of days has changed his entire life for the better.

That’s why Dame Ellen MacArthur set the charity up in the first place.

She said: “I’ll never forget the excitement I felt when I stepped foot on a boat for the first time. I completely fell in love with the freedom and feeling of connectedness the sea provides. Sailing gives everyone the chance to find out what they are capable of alongside others who completely understand what they’ve been through.”

Not only do they find out, but they have so much fun doing so. After everything they have been through, no one deserves it more.

Cruising to Alderney

When the Ancasta Yacht Club and Ancasta Motor Boat Club rallies visited the picturesque island of Alderney this summer, crews were captivated by its golden beaches, turquoise waters, and friendly locals.

The northernmost island of the inhabited Channel Islands, Alderney is located close to France’s wild Cotentin Peninsula and is a quick hop away from Guernsey and Sark, making it a great starting point for cruising adventures. Stuart Brotherton, Ancasta’s Brand Manager for Beneteau, explains why this majestic isle is a must-visit destination for cruisers exploring the Channel this summer...

A Friendly Welcome

Alderney is, without doubt, one of the friendliest places we’ve visited as part of the Ancasta Yacht and Motor Boat Clubs.

On arrival at Braye Harbour, we were met by the friendly Harbour Team, who guided us to our moorings and arranged for a water taxi to take everyone ashore. The local facilities are impressive, too, with 70 visitor mooring buoys, a sheltered anchorage area, fuel, water, showers, toilets, laundry, engineering and chandlery and duty-free goods – everything you need for a hassle-free getaway.

Once on dry land, the close-knit island community invited us with open arms to discover their little piece of paradise where life is slow-paced and reminiscent of a bygone era. In particular, the members of Alderney Yacht Club are incredibly welcoming. Our ever-attentive hosts made us feel right at home in the club bar and treated us to a delicious sunset BBQ on the terrace followed by samples of their unique local tipple – Milk-o-Punch.

Local Foodie Delights

From fine dining at high-end restaurants and delicious lunches with ocean views

to afternoon tea in sunny gardens and fresh fish and chips by the harbour, Alderney boasts an array of culinary delights made with fresh local ingredients. We particularly enjoyed lunch at The Georgian House. With a mix of British pub grub, and fresh locally sourced shellfish, there was something to suit everyone’s tastes. Even as a large group, nothing was too much trouble, and all the crews had a wonderful evening here.

For those who enjoy live music, The Georgian House also hosts fantastic music events in their sun trapped garden. Alternatively, check out the events calendar at The Moorings Bar; while away the evening with a glass of wine to lively tunes overlooking Braye Bay. Golden Sand Beaches

Alderney is a treasure trove of golden beaches with beautiful bays around every headland. Braye Beach is the crown jewel with stunning white sand lapped by calm waters sheltered by an impressive 1.4km breakwater. A stone’s

throw from the main harbour, Braye was a firm favourite among Ancasta Yacht Club members wanting to stretch their legs and soak up the stunning scenery. Fancy dip? Relax and unwind on Saye Beach on the Northeast Coast. Sheltered by rocky headlands, a shimmering crescent of sand leads you down to crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming. If you get up early, you’ll likely have the beach all to yourself, save for a couple of oystercatchers and the resident grey seal. Or, if wildlife spotting is on your must-do list, head further west to discover a wide shingle beach, Platte Saline, protected by Fort Doyle and Fort Tourgis and home to a variety of birds, including the Ring Plover.

Ancasta should be really proud having such a professional team helping the Beneteau sailing community to build their ongoing confidence and share experiences on these hugely valuable and enjoyable weekends away.
