In just a few days, ANCCE and therefore the Purebred Spanish horse, is facing one of its most important commercial crises since the sector eradicated the African Horse Sickness, which affected Spain between the mid-1980s and into the 1990s. As many of our readers may already know, I am referring to the closing of commercial boarders in Mexico to imports of equines from Spain, or those that originate in Spain. It is a measure that restricts our exports to a country which, in recent years, has been a major recipient of quality Purebred Spanish stallions and mares. Upon receiving the report issued by SAGARPA (Mexico’s Secretary for Agriculture, Farming, Rural Development, Fishing and Food) that limits its market, ANCCE contacted Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment to learn the true scope of the measure and the reasons behind it all. Initially, all we had was partial information about the matter. ANCCE immediately summonsed a crisis cabinet that included the Ministry, in an effort to obtain information and face the questions at hand, such as the events giving rise to such a drastic decision on behalf of Mexican authorities. It is the authorities there who are responsible for these attitudes, and we need to know the role that the actual breeders and exporters play in the process, as do local authorities in their role for the verification of animal healthcare and wellbeing, and how ANCCE can aid and offer guarantees before both the Ministry of Agriculture in Spain and SAGARPA in Mexico so that this situation is controlled as quickly as possible. ANCCE has offered the Ministry the full DNA file of PRE horses for them to verify horses as deemed necessary, as well as a series of measure to guarantee the safety and security of exports. Our goal is

to discover who is responsible for these actions. We want the sector to have firsthand information about what and who are guilty of this situation, which in the end, is detrimental for all. We want the full weight of the law to fall upon those who are causing such damage. Likewise, breeders need to know what factors have led to this suspension so they are in a position to make decisions that will affect their future, by knowing the consequences that damaging attitudes on behalf of a few have for breeders in general. Aside from those involved in this wrongdoing, ANCCE, above all else, wants this matter to be solved as quickly as possible to benefit all of its members. The initial meeting with the Ministry was held last July. At that meeting, timely information was provided; first to have the sector duly informed of the events concerning the closing of borders, and secondly, because it is the right of breeders to know who the players are, when it comes to our money and interests. We need to know who is behaving in an irresponsible manner so that said person/s pay for the consequences derived from these events. Your strong support is greatly appreciated and apart from the coercive measures that may be taken as established by law against the guilty party/parties, we need to show our solidarity. Together, we must turn our back on those who are irresponsible and who seek their own benefit using subterfuges, all of which greatly damages our exports. For ANCCE, the solution to this complex matter has become a top priority. After the serious economic crisis suffered in recent years, we seek to solve any hindrance that could affect the sales of horses throughout the world. Sales is our whole raison d’être, as we seek to promote and maintain enthusiasm to breed Purebred Spanish Horses. ¡¡ 3

A fifty-fifty success

ALTHOuGH HORses CAnnOT TALK, like us humans, they communicate with facial expressions and eye and ear movements. In fact, there are manuals and books that explain how to interpret horses’ moods based on the position of various body parts, especially, the ears. Thus, we must learn and, above all, understand what they want to tell at any given moment. I have spent almost 50 years Immersed in the world of horses and, to honest, I could not tell you how many competitions I have been to. Nevertheless, I always observe and study the behavior, the mood and how to coexist with the horse in the arena. I have seen most everything. At Conformation Competitions, I have seen the agony of the awards; in Carriage Driving, how to standout more than anyone else; in Dressage, the education and elasticity of the horse; in Racing, the fastest; in High School, the wisdom of understanding more than anybody; in Vaquera, seeing who turns their horse on a dime; in the Acoso y Derriba (testing the young bulls for stamina using a garrocha pole), who tips

their bull first, etc.. But, for years, I have not seen anybody--literally speaking--give a trophy to a horse. Horses are rewarded with rosettes and blankets placed on their backs; statuettes are presented to the owners that, later on, are placed on bookcases and in the tack room….that is nothing for a horse to appreciate. A few years ago, at the home of Luis Ramos Paul, who rests in peace, the winning horse was given an earthenware pot full of carrots, together with the trophy awarded to the owner. And I can assure you that that horse gave a sigh that was worthy of listening to; a sigh of relief and relaxation that it transmitted to everyone the present, following a great performance in the arena. At the last Doma Vaquera competition I attended, the winning horse, after having the rosette attached, gave an especially violent exhalation (which is usually accompanied by a body posture that shows a state of edginess or anxiety). It was the horse expressing, which was worthy of notice, his state of exhaustion. With these examples, I am trying to transmit to the readers that horses are always communicating. It is important that we understand what they want to tell us at every moment: take care of me and think about what I truly need. If we both speak the “same language,” we will undoubtedly strengthen the rider-horse/ownerhorse relationship. In the end, this will translate into balance, less stress for the horse and, therefore, better results at competition. ¡¡ Rafael Lemos

the spanish horse: a passion that crosses boundaries

today, and according to pre stud book data, there are more than 39,300 purebred spanish horses being bred outside of spain, in more than 60 countries, such as the united states, mexico, méxico, costa rica, france, germany, the united Kingdom, belgium, russia and thailand. this fact proves the interest for the breed the world over. several years ago, this same passion for the spanish horse and everything this entails reached chile at the hand of a businessman and breeder who turned his life’s passion into his way of life. felipe ibáñez scott managed to get the pre to shine in its own light in this western corner of south America, thanks to the creation of the escuela del Arte ecuestre (school of equestrian Art) in chile, which also contributed to increasing the breeding of pres among his countrymen. teXt: ISABEL BERMEjo

T

TODAY, NOBODY doubts the international popularity of the Purebred Spanish horse. It is a well-known and appreciated breed thanks to its outstanding traits. Its beauty, noble spirit, intelligence and strength, in addition to its wonderful functionality and versatility have all been determining factors in its increased participation in major equestrian disciplines. Nevertheless, breeding PREs is not something new to the American continents, as there are some countries where the PRE herds have developed more rapidly. In Chile, located in the southwestern most tip of South America, the arrival of PRE horses was much later than in other locations. Nonetheless, in only a few years, the number of horses there has 9

report of a local businessman, rider and equine enthusiast since childhood, and above all else, a person who loved Spanish Horses; this was Felipe Ibáñez Scott. After visiting Spain several times, and upon seeking advice from experienced breeders, Ibáñez sent the first PRE horses to Chile. These horses made up part of what is Yeguada Nobleza del Parque, and were the foundation horses for the Escuela de Arte Ecuestre (School of Equestrian Art) in Chile, created in 2005. Although the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art (Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre) is his maximum inspiration, he has carefully developed his school with its own glory.

increased, and the breed has been linked to two essential concepts that have facilitated its slow, but constant expansion in the region: quality and local influence. The origins of horses in Chile are closely linked to the history of Spain. After the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, many horses were shipped to the “New World” with the various expeditions from Spain. The first horses arrived in Chile in 1540, but they were mixed breeds; with the passing of time and the crossbreeding process, they became today’s Chilean horse. The presence of Purebred Spanish Horses in the country is much more recent, and dates back to the 1990s. It was all possible thanks the dream 10

Felipe Ibañez Scot, founder of the School of Equestrian Art in Chile.

A sports and artistic challenge It has been ten years since the Escuela de Arte Ecuestre in Chile opened its gates. Over the years, the project has grown thanks to the initial work of Felipe and his wife Heather Atkinson, and later to the professionals who are currently on board. The School has 55 horses, all of which are PRE, chosen from among the 160 horses making up the stud farm. These horses train daily with the routines, in the arts of both dressage and carriage driving, thanks to the work of eight riders and 3 carriage drivers. Both the training of the riders and the horses is the responsibility of the Technical Director, Chilean Ricardo Donoso Valdivieso, who trained at the REAAE. Also, due to the growth and advances in dressage in the past few years, the work of the School has counted on the support of professionals from Spain, including Juan Huertas Roldán. Thanks to the efforts of the Executive Director, Andrés Salas García de Vinuesa, the School is greatly involved in dressage and in developing Spanish High School, which is a pioneering project in Chile. Moreover, the institution has created the show “Fantasía andaluza” (Andalusian Fantasy), which offers beautiful esthetics and technical skill. The show offers a variety of numbers, such as, pas de

the 22 to 28 horses that usually participate at each show. These include Gotardo—son of renowned Ermitaño III, the first Elite Breeding Stock—and Hallado—from Ganadería El Caldero—both of which play an important role in the show. The show has travelled throughout Chile, visiting the nation’s capital, Santiago, and various regions such as La Araucanía, where the School is located. For Felipe Ibáñez, the School’s founder, the cornerstone of the institution is “to develop equestrian art with ridden horses and driving carriages, always focusing on purism, correctness and esthetic beauty. The backing for the aforementioned project is our Stud Farm, an organization associated with the School, as it provides functional horses for our disciplines. Another strong point is that we have trained a group of riders from the grassroots by taking charge of the integrated technical preparation, so that they 11

learn to ride correctly right from the beginning. We have used this same philosophy with our horses, that have been trained slowly, but with care at our own facility.” However, his major challenges are to “project the PRE in Chile, cultivate the art of classic equitation, compete and win the training test, as well as being a reference point of excellence in Chile for leaning equitation and the High School concept, and to consolidate an operation of excellence and sustainability both at the School and our Stud Farm.”

Ibáñez specifies that “we work exclusively with PRE horses, bred by us here in Chile, and registered with ANCCE. We are full-fledged members and integrated into the organization and we strictly follow its standards and dispositions.” Ibáñez confides in an increase in the PRE herd in Chile in the next few years, as a new stud farm has begun breeding. He points out that “all those who see a PRE in Chile are impressed by it many advantages, which are not seen together in other breeds here in this country. My mission is to continue working for the PRE in Chile so that it is 14

appreciated for its extraordinary virtues, to place it on the pedestal it deserves. In this regard, I feel that I have a major responsibility before our country and before Spain.” As this breeder stated, “I can’t imagine another breed with these same qualities, and there is no other that surpasses it in classic equitation and vaquera riding, as seen in the show.” Recently, member of the School travelled to Andalusia to meet with breeders and renowned equestrian institutions. It is an experience that forges bonds on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. ¡¡

He has been a RFHE (Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation) Judge since 1989 and four years later, 3* International judge for the FEI (International Equestrian Federation). In the 2000 he was promoted by the FEI to International 4* judge and in 2003 he was named International Young Horses judge. Moreover, he has taken the FEI’s technical delegate course. His work as an international judge includes such s judging at no less than six Young Horse World Championships, two European Junior Championships, at the Balkan Games and more than 100 international competitions, including CDIO, CDI5*, CDI-W (Final League) and the World Dressage Challenge in

Europe, America and Asia. He was a member of the RFHE National Dressage Commission from 1997 to 2008 (president 2000-2004). He has been part of the RFHE National Technical Committee of Judges (1994-1998), on the ANCCE Board of Directors (1992-1998) and at present, he is a member of the Spanish Horse Opinion Forum. Within the ANCCE General Sport Commission, he is president of the Show Jumping Sub-committee and member of the Dressage Sub-committee. As a Sports Technician in Equitation since 1994, Mariano Santos is also a judge for PRE Conformationfunctional Competitions and FEI commissioner. He is currently a member of the Technical Subcommittee of ANCCE Judges for Conformation-functional Competitions. In 2008, HM King Juan Carlos awarded Mariano Santos the Royal Order of Chivalry of Ronda medal. How would you assess the last young Horses world Championships held in verden last August, where you judged? The level was really high and I was so satisfied and proud to see two Spanish riders, Severo Jurado and Jordi Domingo win the World championship for 5 and 8 yearolds, respectively. Although there were no PRe horses present, do you consider that the breeding and selection of spanish Horses has attained the quality currently required by world Championships? Undoubtedly, the answer is affirmative. Presenting a young horse is very demanding and requires early dedication. We often

interview for juniors and in Young Horses. With effort and the appropriate means, I believe that this is perfectly possible. Compared to other countries and breeds, in most cases, the PRE horses competing in the Olympics and in FEI Championships are still owned by their breeder. This is quite expensive and in the long run, it could lead to burn-out. In my opinion we must consolidate a market of owners who are firmly resolved to back the PRE in toplevel competition. In recent years, have you perceived changes in international judges abroad when assessing PREs in the arenas, as compared to the image they previously had of the breed? We always try to judge the quality of the horsemanship and of the paces, with no distinction between breed or type of horse. We receive continuous training from the FEI in that sense and the international results of the various types of horses corroborate this, especially among higher-level judges with more experience.

We look for a healthy horse with good conformation, pleasant and easy to ride, a horse that moves well in its three paces and is able to more than cope with the demands of the Grand Prix.

18

come across quite precocious competition in other breeds, but if we want to improve, we must compete with the rest in equality of conditions as the only pathway towards achieving true selection and improvement of the PRE. How would you assess the results obtained by PREs at international competition in recent years? In recent years, the results in toplevel international competitions speak for themselves: Jerez, Athens, Hong-Kong, Kentucky, London and Normandy, to mention only the most important. We can also breed and train competitive horses in categories

What do you think of the possibility of a medal in Rio? Competition is hard and there are countries that are quite difficult to beat. Nevertheless, the result achieved by our riders in Aachen invites optimism. From your point of view, in what direction should the Purebred Spanish Horse continue to develop in Dressage? Always seek quality, according to the general principles of universally accepted equitation, which are the same for any type of horse and have endured over time. Competition, following FEI Rules, favors the selection of the best horse for classic equitation and appropriate training, too. In the long-term, we look for a healthy horse with good conformation,

pleasant and easy to ride, one that moves well in its three paces and is able to more than cope with the demands of the Grand Prix with no apparent effort and in harmony with its rider. For breeders and riders, as an international judge, what advice would you give to our Spanish competitors who are competing with PRE Horses, both in Spain and abroad? Persistence and perseverance; methodical work, always under the appropriate guidance and according to the principles of classic equitation, which knows no shortcuts. As the ancient Greeks stated: “The Gods place sweat over laurels.” This year you have judged in European, American and Asian countries and in up-coming months you have several more commitments. How do you do it and where do you get the time? We have to really be careful with our agendas, accepting only the

commitments that we can fulfil. As for the time, my main work is construction and, unfortunately, given the recent economic situation in Spain, in recent years I have had more time free time than I would have wished. Considered by many as the most international of the international judges--excuse me for repeating myself--what is you greatest reward? Judging, above all else, is a huge honor, mainly due to the trust that the system has in us, and the responsibility that goes with it. We unselfishly offer our enthusiasm and technical knowledge to serve the sport, contributing the best of ourselves. It is in fact this service to sport that provides me the greatest personal satisfaction, which abundantly compensates my efforts and sacrifice, and the criticism that, with or without foundation, we sometimes receive from participants, family, trainers, owners, or the media.¡¡

Judging, above all else, is a huge honor, mainly due to the trust that the system has in us, and the responsibility that goes with it.

Training course for PRE Conformation and Movement In response to the widespread demand from breeders, ANCCE organized the first course on PRE Conformation and movement in Sevilla. This course was specific for breeders, farm managers, handlers and enthusiasts of the Purebred Spanish Horse. The objective was to learn more about the PRE, its body anatomy and the interrelationship between them. The course was taught by Conformation and TQB judge, rider and handler Ignacio Bravo García. He offered an in-depth analysis using photographs of the horse’s various body, as well as illuminating videos of how the horse uses the various anatomical areas and the influence of each on the horse’s movement. Other courses are being planned throughout Spain once the summer has concluded. The dates will soon be published so that all those interested have timely information and can sign up. ¡¡ 20

In 2016, VAT will not be included in international competition entry fees The FEI (Fédération Équestre Internationale or International Federation for Equestrian Sports) has decided to exclude VAT from the international competition entry fee. This measure, which will have to be endorsed by the General Assembly, responds to a long-standing demand from organizing committees, as they consider that local taxes of each country (VAT or Value Added Tax) should not be included in the fee paid by the participants, fundamentally because these are not the same for all participants. When the FEI established a ceiling price for its fees, it seemed logical that this maximum price should not alter depending on the taxes of each country. By announcing this change, international competitions will charge the participants separately; in addition to the entry fee, the corresponding VAT will be charged, which will vary depending on the country where the competition is being held. All will on the same playing field when depositing the maximum amount that the FEI has established for the entry fees. This change in the rules will have major repercussions, especially for international circuits that have massive participation, as they will be able to increase their revenues. It will therefore affect organizers in Spain, where a good number of circuits take place. For that reason it is not surprising that the request for change has been greatly promoted by Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation, which has done a great job defending the interests of Spanish organizing committees, although a simple application of logic would, in any case, serve to justify their hard work. ¡¡

He has received a tribute for his professional life with fighting bull and equines—more specifically the Purebred Spanish Horse—to which he contributed greatly towards its special and differentiating stamp. Both under saddle and in-hand, he made horses worthy of admiration. Together with the stud farm owner, he established a prototype within PRE breed quality. Even today, many breeders continue to search for this prototype. 22

In his role as Farm Manager, he was presented with the Award for Best Stud Farm in 1991, 1992 and 1994, as well as certificates from Cria Caballar Office (Military Breeding Office) for the quality of his horses in 1979 and 1991. ¡¡

How did you get into breeding Purebred spanish Horses? Thanks to our passion for the Purebred Spanish Horse, we started our stud farm five years ago. It was the right timing to turn our longtime dream into reality: a small stud farm, but one with a lot of quality. The PRE is also a symbol of Spain, our country of origin, and undoubtedly the presence of these animals encourages us and makes Spain seem a little closer. your best stallion/mare/youngster is: It is very difficult to name a single horse. The stand was visited by breeders and enthusiasts who were welcomed to discuss matters regarding the Association and the PRE Stud Book. Promotional material about the breed, ANCCE and SICAB was distributed. Likewise, on Friday, the 14th of August, a glass of wine was offered to members of ANCCE. This moment of enjoyment served as a meeting point for breeders and various members of the management. ¡¡

ANCCE presents measures before the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, with the necessary guarantees for the Mexican authorities to reopen the market Since the General Under-Secretary for Health and Border Control at Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment informed that the health and welfare authorities at SAGARPA (Secretary of Agriculture, Breeding, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food)

in Mexico had established precautionary measures which was to prohibit imported equines, whether originating in Spain or from Spain, ANCCE urgently presented the Ministry of Agriculture with a study that contemplates a number of measures. These measures

seek to offer maximum guarantees for the authorities in Mexico to recuperate their confidence in Spain and to re-open the market as quickly as possible. ANCCE, as the organization handling the PRE Stud Book, has carried out this proposal. A meeting was held with Valentín Almansa de Lara, the Director General for Health and Welfare of Agricultural Production. He was presented with each of the measures

FROM NOVEMBER 17 TO 22 MEMBERS

ANCCE launches a new measure that benefits full-fledged members, with a special post-deadline inscription rate ANCCE, with its continuous efforts to benefit its members, is serving the interests of its full-fledged members by approving a measure in the form of a rebate for service 127 (Post-deadline inscription) provided by the PRE Stud Book. This same rebate was applied last June for services 103 (Identification for Inscription) and 206 (Basic Aptitude for Breeding). This new measure offers economic benefits for full-fledged members of ANCCE, in the form of €200 when registering (inscribing) a foal after the established deadline. Currently, this service costs €300 per horse, and it will now be reduced to €100 for each horse. Remember that in keeping with the current legislation, any horse born in 2014, in 2013 or previously, is already considered a post-deadline inscription (Service 127); in such cases, the breeder needs to request a Passport or an Equine ID from local authorities. Also, foals born in 2015 must be registered before the end of this year to be considered a normal inscription (Service 103). As of now, and until November 30 of this year, to take advantage of this reduced rate, the Full-fledged Member must be current with all ANCCE payments up to December 31 of the previous year. Upon requesting this service from the PRE Stud Book, and should the breeder have an outstanding account with ANCCE, said breeder may not enjoy this benefit and the corresponding additional fee will be applied due to failure to meet the requirements for discounts. Said difference must be paid in full and may be included in future fees when requesting services or as a receipt included in the annual Association quota. ¡¡ Savings for full-fledged members of ANCCE when requesting Service 127 (Post-deadline inscriptions) Full-fledged Members

and offered maximum guarantees for the safety and security of future exports. Until these measures have been discussed with SAGARPA, they will not be made public. SICAB 2015, FIRST PRE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP Coinciding with the celebrations of 25 years of SICAB history, ANCCE has taken another step forward in the international promotion of Purebred Spanish Horses and has converted the event into the 1st World PRE Championship. It is a very special edition in which one of the main points of interest will be this new Conformation Final, which will be attended by the best Purebred Spanish Horses in the world. Currently, Spanish horses are bred in almost 60 countries. Annually, horses come to SICAB from stud farms in a number of countries, including the US, Guatemala, Mexico, France, United Kingdom and Switzerland. That is why ANCCE sustains that we must continue to work towards the globalization of the breed, and as a result, the international promotion of this commercial showcase. As such, SICAB is the ideal setting for PRE breeders. What better way to enhance the event than to create the World Purebred Spanish Horse Championship to position it as a reference not only at the national and international level, as it is today, but also making it a world-class event. Lastly, the corresponding Commission is working to adapt the specific SICAB Rules & Regulations. Also, we are working on a new conformation competition model for 2016, which will be published once work has concluded. ¡¡

we hope to avoid the incident at hand. Borders were closed due to fraudulent practices on behalf of a number of exporters during the certification process. Moreover, ANCCE has offered the Ministry the possibility of providing an export service for breeders, controlled throughout the entire process to provide maximum guarantees. ¡¡

The Functionality test

The ANCCE Press Office has asked me to write an article about the Functionality test. It is an extremely broad and wideranging topic. It covers analysis, past, present and future, texting optimization, judging, presentations, etc.. These topics will be covered in two separate articles. You can read the first below, while the second, for the next issue, will cover more practical information applying to the paces of the horse. Let’s start from the beginning! carlos núñez

G

GIVEN THAT MOST people are not interested in anything else and being that it is a very controversial subject, I would like to share my opinion about what is happening right now and about the changes approved in 2015. Better stated, the change as it has simply been to replace Conformation judges with Category “A” Dressage judges. Certainly, it is a daring decision that generates consequences in every direction but for the most part, contrary to the repercussions from the poor situation judging found itself in. The most common shortcomings or the most frequent cases arising from the old system were not to judge the Functionality test at all, leaving all the horses level-pegging if you forget about the tenths, or to judge depending on the conformation result; these are two very serious situations that breach the rules. In addition, these are unforeseeable for the participant as it was difficult to know what the situation would be when competing on any given day. Judging could go well, which happened in some cases, or one of the aforementioned situations could

36

arise. All three situations lead to very different results. Our scores, with the previous and the current judges, are a good example. No matter who won, riders would have continued to seeking the applause of a fool rather than the silence of a wise person; this was less serious since a more spectacular performance was appreciated over correct paces, which, in too many cases, were inexistent. Many presentations completely missed the lower levels of the Training Scale, even the health of the horse and worldwide norms for animal wellbeing were overlooked; however, on occasion, despite it all, they triumphed, without taking into consideration the damage done to the horses. The result of this was that PRE horses that were successful in equestrian disciplines were not presented in Conformation competitions. A competition category like that had a limited lifespan; as the sector advances, it slowly but inevitably becomes more professional, and this hinders good professionals from entering the sector, unless they paid

the price of Olympic athletes. There have been champions whose training for Functionality has cost more than others have investing in taking them to Grand Prix. The importance lies in the fact that is was far from the ideal showcase when it came to promoting the breed, which should, logically and according to the regulations, be the baseline objective of a competition— that was the initial motivation of it all. Personally, I believe that Functionality test judging should focus on a more healthy form of equitation and in accordance with the nature of the PRE, the breed quality its use and its markets. We must move away from rushed spectacular strides full of tension, imbalances and defects to promote unrestricted horses, their impulsion coming through calmness, regularity and natural balance. In short, judging the Functionality of the PRE is none other than seeking a horse that is versatile and easy to ride on difficult occasions (equestrian disciplines) and calm; the horse moving freely, working through its whole back and with its energy oscillating from the hindquarters to the forehand, passing through the entire body of a freemoving and flexible horse. All of this is synonymous to quality. These virtues have direct repercussions for the horse’s response to the Training Scale, something for which the new judges are much better trained, experienced and used to seeing. The independence of these judges while judging is also very important and positive—absolutely not influenced by the Conformation result—something that is a major advantage for the Rules & Regulations. It liberates the Conformation judge from this second judging. Each is able to perform their job professionally. The criteria are more solid and, therefore, less susceptible to external influence. Luckily for the horse, it will be judged by market demands and consumer criteria, a group to which these judges belong. This is much more logical, as it contributes real information and added value; their conclusions will be less contradictive of market and selection criteria.

Breeding policies have a great responsibility in the handling, promotion and future of the Breed. Both the Rules and the judge have, in this sense, an ethical obligation to give a maximum and rational performance, to become together in a transparent line, which has quality, and render justice for the Spanish Horse and the sector’s efforts. To achieve this, ANCCE must provide judges with the necessary tools to make this willingness foolproof: tools such as work and consensus meetings with the judges, and good arenas at the competitions to present the horses on appropriate surfaces; this is something that improves scores considerably and strengthens the PRE image. Most important of all: design suitable tests that allow judges to see more quality of paces and less handling influence or rider factor. Simple changes were designed some time ago now, which allowed us to see the horse’s natural balance, its ability for self-carriage and differentiated level based on age. Incomprehensibly, those in charge at that time refused to change the current exercise or test, which has been performed since 1986. We owe a lot to this text, not for its design, but rather because it is obligatory. It was, nonetheless, useful, because it has brought a certain degree of

The variations within the paces are collected, working, medium, extended and free, but within these, there is variability depending on the age of the horse and its level of training.

professional handling to the Breed, with very positive consequences in selection and results. It served to eradicate those horses, literally unable to canter or to walk—so common 30 years ago—that could not even trot correctly, but that looked great. Until recently, the best score for walk, trot or canter was awarded to three different horses and one of these was the Champion. Today that is not the case. You can now see many horses with quality in their three paces. The current test motivates some breeders to invest fortunes in getting the movement from a nag that in a good horse should be inborn. This does not do the breed any favors. In competition, the results and the successes obtained through major investments in the rider factor are fair, but when it comes to selection, we must not forgotten that it all depends upon genetics; the “rider-factor,”, on the other hand, is not inherited. The same thing happens when you use science to improve imperfections. To keep an elite sport horse in competition for a few more years by means of expensive veterinary advances is logical; to chemically influence a retarded horse so that it can compete in this simple test for sire stallions is absurd, and ethically is only justified by ignorance. This is how serious defects survive and expand from one generation to the next. They become associated with the genetic package of very spectacular and

beautiful individuals. In the end, they secretly convince a sector that is more passionate than professional. The problems that I sense, and from where new problems could originate are: First, and perhaps the only justified complaint are the competitions abroad, with few participants in the sire stallion sections, hindered by the prices of the flights. This obligatory nature does not facilitate the organization of competitions in places where it is a good idea to promote the PRE. I think that we lose more than we gain by not promoting and facilitating more competitions outside of Spain. Not only for the Rules. I believe that all the work carried out to facilitate these is positive. It is a proven fact that countries importing greater numbers of horses are those that hold several competitions a year; events where interest in the PRE never wanes. The score for breed quality is one of our faults; it is a mistake that the concepts of breed definition under saddle are not sufficiently enumerated. The breed quality talks about the horse’s capacity for collection, balance and ease, elevation, suspension, extension, selfcarriage, etc.. Half of the breed quality talks about the way the Purebred Spanish Horse moves, but it does not differentiate traits; it simply says that it should as good as possible. The Category “A” Dressage judge is accustomed to judging thousands of rider/horse combinations every year. That is very positive. The only thing that they should know, in the case of this aptitude test for horses, is to try to assess the quality of paces rather than the quality of the presentations. In this case, the scores differ; here, concepts such as submission, seat or position are not taken into consideration. The score is specifically for the paces. In Dressage, a quality horse, after presenting its work, could perfectly be the last; on the other hand, in the Functionality test, except in extreme cases where this quality was impossible to appreciate, this should not happen. Logically, it is necessary to perform the test correctly and the rider will show the best or the worst of his/her horse. On the contrary, a good test from a horse with no quality would also have a very different result in each case.

Carlos Núñez

One of the problems when theorizing and explaining the quality of the paces is that speaking and with pictures, we can only cover one fact at a time. It is a bit like cooking several ingredients that interact simultaneously. In practice, it is necessary to pay attention to several aspects at the same time and quickly decide the degree of importance of each. It is necessary to work on several variables. It is sometimes necessary to assess several points at the same time while we can only see the isolated characteristics from a theoretical and structured position. In practice, it is difficult to discriminate, but the consequences arise from the presentation and in the Training Scale. For example, it is necessary to bear in mind that a horse must have self-carriage and go forward in balance; this has a repercussion in the position of the head and that the neck is stable and correct, in that the neck should be open, the front of the head should be vertical or just in front of the vertical; the back should vibrate and absorb the movement with active and engaged hindquarters; the tendency should be clearly uphill, and so forth. All of these points are a consequence of the quality of the paces but also, they are inevitably influenced by the handling. In summary, only an expert can differentiate the ingredients. In fact, anyone who is able to accurately gauge the paces of a young horse can make a living from that. We need a consequence of quality and, clearly, this is balance and ease, with an unquestionable result in the regularity, infinitely more than the badly understood spectacular performance. We must not forget that regularity of paces is an essential and common characteristic, required from all the movements, whether under saddle or not, and from all the variations within the paces. The walk must be regular, frank and loose. The trot must be elastic, regular, sustained and active. The canter, also regular, must be light and cadenced. Impulsion is a psychological attitude that responds with a physical positioning of the conformation that reflects how

the horse moves. Not only does have nothing to do with speed, but rather, by reducing it to minimums is when we can verify whether or not it exists. This is the difference between impulsion and inertia; two words that must not be confused. They are opposites. An always active impulsion will lead to freedom of the forehand and good engagement of the hindquarters. Likewise, total freedom of movement is required, without tension or resistance. This position of the horse’s body, which enables it to move forwards in balance, depends totally upon the quality of its conformation, but in a test, this can also be improved by training. It must be mentioned that cadence can be appreciated in the trot and in the canter. This is the result of the harmony shown by a horse when it moves regularly, with impulsion and in balance. Cadence should be maintained throughout the different exercises. Faults in the rhythm could be momentary or constant, persisting during the test, the pace or the work on one of the reins. There can be no compromises regarding rhythm; uniformity in this respect must be insisted upon both on the straight line and on curves, as well as while making transitions and during any exercise, and also in the variations within a single pace: whether free, collected, medium or extended. The clarity of the pace is also

The walk has to be regular, frank and loose; the trot elastic, regular, sustained and active; and the canter must also be regular, light and cadenced. 40

an absolute priority. Where one stops, another starts; there must be fluency in the transitions, ease and coordination. The correct rhythm of each pace, with its times being clear, is evidence of correct quality; consequently, we are able to see how frank the pace is, lack of tension, uniform contact and the straightness of the horse. For example, when we see a horse that is unable to find a balanced rhythm, this could be due to several causes: Handling: a term in the middle for something between being caused by conformation and being caused by method, usually stemming from mouth, poll and neck. Or almost completely due to conformation: limb alignment, an angulation contrary to what is desirable in the bony areas and joints, poor construction of the top line, ribs, or defects, bone disease and injuries. In both cases, the more the rider pushes, the worse the horse will go. I mentioned that it is essential to try and assess the paces rather than the variation within the pace, but a judge cannot just guess. Sometimes, by improving or increasing the variation within the pace, the superiority of a horse can be demonstrated. On the other hand, other horses, when the difficulty

of the presentation is increased, show all their faults and lack of quality. This deficiency, perhaps with a more moderate variation, would be missed. The maximum development of the horse’s supporting strength progressively leads to a growing self-carriage and a better posture, but only when the horse has the quality for it. Therefore, if the test does not ask for this and should the rider try to present it—unnecessarily and above the possibilities of the horses and its level of training—the result will be negative. The variations within a pace are collected, working, medium, extended and free, but within these, there is variability depending on the age of the horse and its level of training. For example, the working pace of a Grand Prix horse could be more collected than the collected pace of that same horse when it was a 6 year-old. Training improves the variation within the pace, but not the pace, although it does hide and dissimulate its deficiencies, by means of gymnastics and an appropriate setting in hand, the horse gains balance and learns how to counteract its defects in other joints. The defects and virtues of a horse have a life of their own; they increase or decrease according to the gymnastics and training received. For this reason, it is not the same to value the pace as the variation within the pace, although it is clear that an increase in the difficulty of the variation, with no negative consequences on the movement itself, demonstrates its excellence. In the judges’ isolated assessment of the three paces in the Functionality test, the medium and extended walk are assessed, in addition to the working and extended trot and canter. Six marks are given, all with a coefficient of two. The medium and working paces are presented on both reins and the extended on a straight line across the diagonal. The assessment has two more marks without a coefficient; these are for the general impression and the breed quality. The total score obtained in Functionality is equal to 25% of the overall score in the Conformation competition and each pace accounts for a quarter of the test. To be continued…¡¡

FLYING CHANGES TEXT: jorge conde

42

h

Having consolidated the initial stages of the Training Scale, when the horse is five years of age, it will begin to give us isolated flying changes—after two years of Dressage training—and by the age of six, it should perform these for the first time at competition. In the test for 6 year-olds, the Preliminary test asks for two flying changes on the diagonal; in the Final, four changes are requested: two on the short diagonal and two from counter canter at the end of the long sides of the arena. A competition horse performs flying changes at level 4, the stage at which it has reached 100% on the Training Scale, including collection; this was the last parameter of the working method explained in the previous issue of this magazine. Prior Preparation To reach flying changes, the horse should, throughout the learning process, have worked for almost a year on simple changes; this will have given it the ability to carry its weight on its hindquarters. It will have the knowledge to shorten its strides and to balance itself and, most importantly, to carry itself. Thus, the horse will have been gently introduced to flying changes. They are many techniques to work on this exercise. It is one of the most personal with regards to its aids. This is the justification why horses that change well,

even when ridden by experts, can fail in their flying changes. It is very important that the horse reacts to the change in the aids (legs and body weight) and that it does not learn how to change, thinking ahead of the rider, simply due to the slight change in the bend of its neck. Because of this, the aids should be marked with precision, but, in addition to this, coordinated with each other, almost imperceptible to the viewer. If this was not enough, these aids must be given at a precise time with regards to the moment of suspension in the horse’s canter. That is to say, the rider has to control an ample number of factors. The Most Common Methods to Start Changes As mentioned previously, it is a very personal exercise and there are many methods for its execution. In all of these, calmness, correction and rewarding the horse when it does something correct

dressage are key, as are avoiding abuse and the over-repetition of exercises, especially at the start. Starting with a few exercises, to gradually and progressively build up their numbers gives the horse time to assimilate what it is learning. Personalizing the instructions depending on the horse’s characteristics and needs will determine the attitude of the horse when faced with flying changes. Some of the possible methods are: 1. On a figure of eight, start by inserting simple changes; then shorten the number of intermediate steps. Once the horse has identified the exercise, ask it for the change.

The movement of the rider’s weight and the moment of the change can be appreciated. Distinguido X, owned by Yeguada Los Pinos and ridden by Ignacio Ramblas, was bred by Yeguada Romero Benítez.

“For a flying change to receive a high score, certain innate qualities are required. The PRE naturally has these qualities; undoubtedly, when breeding, we must strengthen and look after for the future: strength, elasticity and an uphill tendency.” 2. From counter canter, strike-off in a correct canter on the long side, change using a small half-circle and once in counter canter, ask the horse to take its weight onto the opposite side. Make sure that its shoulders are in-line with its hindquarters and, once you are sure it is ready, ask for the change. 3. On the short diagonal, after asking for a simple change on the short side, to bring the horse’s weight well back, turn onto a short diagonal and check that the horse is going forward and is straight. Only when you are sure it is ready and straight should you ask for the change. 4. From leg yielding, turn onto the center line and ask for a leg yield. This will help to put the horse straight and balance it. All these methods have the same objective: prepare the horse towards a favorable moment, well-balanced and straight, while at the same time 44

placing its body so that it favors the moment of the change. This does not mean that these are the only methods. Only the knowledge of the rider or an experienced trainer at his/her side together with the technical indications will successful results be obtained. Good or Bad Flying Changes The flying change is a mechanical exercise. Although there may be surprises, everything appears to indicate that a horse whose canter has a good period of suspension, is well-balanced and has done appropriate gymnastic work with good self-carriage in its canter will produce the best changes. By nature there are horses that find them very easy; however, there are others that find this exercise more complex. The Main Problems of Flying Changes When carrying out flying changes, the main problems are:

“When a horse calmly performs canter-walk transitions and its strides are always of equal length, then it is ready for flying changes.” Nuno Oliveira.

BOB LANGRISH

Correct, efficient and balanced flying change that take long strides with the hind legs. Norte Lovera, owned by Yeguada Lovera and ridden by JosĂŠ Antonio GarcĂa Mena.

- Changing leg through trot: the horse takes intermediate strides of trot or even walk. - Changing front and back legs at different times: this is when the horse changes its hind legs first or, more usually, its forelegs to then take an intermediate disunited stride and finally changes the other legs. - Hind legs together: the horse puts its hind legs on the ground at the same time, to change in front, before coordinating its hindquarters.

But at the moment of the change both hind legs move together. - Short step: here the change is correct, but the horse could be changing with a good length of stride with its forelegs, while behind, the length of stride of the hind legs is very short, thus losing clarity. - Flat: the horse has hardly a moment of suspension. - Downhill: its hindquarters jump with the croup, putting its weight on its forehand, to lose balance. 45

dressage In other words, the facility with which a horse executes—or fails to do so—is dependent upon all of the aforementioned factors. This includes those inherent to the horse itself, and the external factors that come through learning. Great trainers have already stated this fact. I have known Central European horses with no ability for flying changes and PRE horses as well. Likewise, I have seen just the opposite. Consequently, it cannot be stated that it is an exercise that is easier or more difficult for a PRE horse than for any other breed. We must, of course, be very careful in the preparation work and follow the appropriate rules to successfully culminate the process. For a flying change to receive a high score, certain innate qualities are required. The PRE naturally has these qualities; undoubtedly, when breeding, we must strengthen and look after for the future: strength, elasticity and an uphill tendency. ¡¡

- Losing straightness: the horse either moves its hindquarters to one side or, if they are sequential changes, every time it changes it leaves the diagonal line. - Tension: one of the keys to flying changes is that the horse must be capable of preserving a quality canter. When you start to suggest the change to the horse, if it does not understand what you want, it will tend to tense-up until it understands. It is easy to spoil some things (it could shorten its neck, become stressed and, in general, it is could easily become rigid). If the horse is tense when changing legs, this will make the exercise difficult for it and therefore, reduce its score.

Flying Changes and the Purebred Spanish Horse Evidently, the flying change is not an exercise for which a given breed is a determining factor. 46

“One of the secrets of flying changes is to have the horse’s shoulders on the same track as the hindquarters. Many riders start their changes with the hindquarters ahead of the forehand.” Nuno Oliveira.

The change in the rider’s aids can clearly be seen. The horse is up-hill and at the moment of suspension. Bajel de Valdesol, owned by Yeguada Valdesol and ridden by Isidro Maldonado.

RAFAEL LEMOS

Brilliant and Noteworthy Flying Changes To start with, flying changes must be clean and clear; they must be bouncy and expansive, well-balanced and uphill, energetic, straight and with impulsion. If they are sequential changes, it is essential that the horse changes on the strides asked for in each test (every 4, 3, 2 or 1); the total number of changes must also correct and the series is located on a welltraced, straight diagonal, as well as the central change being on or very near to “X”. Regarding the precision of the change, according to the Dressage Handbook, this should take place when the horse’s nose reaches the letter. For example, in the Prix St Georges test or the Intermediate I, which have changes at the end of the diagonal, the change should be executed when the nose of the horse reaches the letter. As stated in the guidelines for the test, it is on the last stride while still on the diagonal, and not on the outside track having left. This type of error, very common in the execution of these tests, lowers the score by at least one point.

If I look back in time, and try to remember where my passion for the equine horse world begins, I recall a childhood image riding my first mares, Brinca (daughter of Cabriola) and Época—both with Peralta brands—it was with them that I made my tracks into the world of equestrianism. They both had enormous hearts for show jumping and, perhaps, that pinch of Spanish blood had a lot to do with how we performed as partners for many years. Época was a very courageous mare who, when she got into a rhythm, she was a real artillery cannon. Among the great moments we shared as a pair, I remember a wonderful victory at the 1995 final for Alevines (for 9-11 year-olds) at the Spanish National Championship in Getxo (Bilbao); we won bronze at the Andalusian Championship and gold at the 1997 Spanish National Championship, in the category for 13-15 year-olds, held in Seville. My initial experience as a novice show jumping rider leads me to think about the functionality of the Purebred Spanish Horse (PRE) for the lower levels of this discipline. The PRE is an ideal horse for young people who have the possibility of training as riders. Undoubtedly, to participate with a PRE is an added incentive to participate at the most important dates on the PRE calendar: SICAB. This event is the maximum international expression for Purebred Spanish Horse enthusiasts and for horses in general. An ideal competition houses an arena with 6,000 spectators and is offered live on the SICAB.TV portal. It is an impressive backdrop to start out in the competition world. Today, we are on the starting line, moving towards a horizon that seeks to promote the PRE as a suitable horse to demonstrate its lovely nature in show

jumping. This discipline currently has the largest number of federation licenses, thus making it a major market option that we are failing to take advantage of. Based on the data from Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation (RFHE), there are some 55,000 equestrian licenses, of which 50% are for hacking, training courses, etc.. Therefore, I dare estimate, without much of a margin for mistakes, that there are between 8,000–10,000 people participating in show jumping. On occasion, I am asked why I have so much faith in the Purebred Spanish Horse for show jumping. My response is if we assume that horses always demonstrate the qualities demanded by this sport, an option with which you can rest assure is a PRE, or at least, that is what my experience has shown me. Selection is very important;

The PRE is an enormous heart that ensures their honesty. By intelligently managing their resources means that their jump is comfortable and smooth. testing horses loose greatly facilitates this task. If we truly find a stallion or mare with aptitudes for this discipline, we must value them and place them in a showcase for breeders, horsemen and enthusiasts to see. With the current number of stud farms in Spain, it would be very interesting to create a PRE show jumping circuit, where such values as honesty and versatility are rewarded. Soon after I proposed this article, I chatted with Javier Valiente, general director of the Foundation for the Promotion of Equestrian Sports. This organization is promoting a new equestrian discipline in Spain: 49

Technique and Style Tests, very similar to what is known as Hunter in some other countries (Style in the UK). For this, elegant and light riding is essential. It creates greater awareness of what is required in a show jumping round, all of which is marked by judges, just as is customary for Dressage tests. At 50

The learning capacity of a PRE is infinite thanks to which limited training is possible with little investment.

these competitions, the horse’s performance is not being judged; rather, what is sought is the quality of horsemanship in the rider and not that of their mount. The competitions would include jumps of moderate heights; therefore a magnificent jumping horse is not necessary. It is the rider’s work and the way they use the arena that is judged. To promote these, it is essential to have clinics for riders aiming for a discipline where “our” horses could be a favorite. The participant profile for these competitions is that of a person with an awareness of time and economics, with horses having the heart to jump medium heights, and who seek out the most learned aspects of show jumping. If we show interest, I assure you that we will enjoy the full support of this Foundation, which has already started down this path. Another place where PRE horses could be considered an ideal horse is at riding schools that are authorized for the official training courses for Sport Technicians, for which there are three levels. These schools need Purebred Spanish Horses for their students. In conclusion, I would like to highlight the positive aspects of the PRE. They have an enormous heart that ensures their honesty. By intelligently managing their resources means that their jump is comfortable and smooth. Their learning capacity is infinite thanks to which limited training is possible with little investment… and in addition to it all, as I have commented to some breeders on more than one occasion, PREs are like a wrench: their versatility means that one horse can have many uses. In summary, I believe that no breed is capable of such a pleasant jump. And this should be a priority for amateur riders. ¡¡

RAFAEL LEMOS

When you cinch up for the first time in Roncesvalles, a special sensations ripples through your body. Everything is prepared. With the best saddle available, the stirrups are adjusted to the perfect length, thus causing no discomfort your horse. With the very first step, you notice a special something in the expression of the horses. They know they are about to undertake a major endeavor. For most, it is a-once-ina-lifetime experience and they know that throughout the 800 kilometers (almost 480 miles), there will be incidence and unexpected adventures that are not on the program. There is always something that is noteworthy. Reaching the Plaza de Obradoiro on horseback is not the final goal, nor is slowly trotting past the cathedral in Leon the only surprising experience. Riding the Way enshrouds the excitement of little details; those that are hardly ever appreciated in this day and age. Galloping through the fields of Burgos once the wheat has been harvested, seeing the happiness of local farmers as they greet horse and rider, or leaving Irache after having spent the night in the Monastery, are all magical moments. These are the little details that encourage pilgrims to leave the corral so that they can enjoy a peaceful meal of hot stew just outside Astorga or have a swim in the Orbigo River. Preparing In all truth, such a journey on the back of a PRE has that antiquated toughness that makes it different. The simple fact that we are travelling with a horse pre-conditions everything, but at the same time, we will establish very special ties with our mount. When travelling on horseback, it is advisable to travel as a group, with other riders and the logistical support of a vehicle, if possible. It is

not just a matter of sharing common interests with friends, but also the fact that there are risks that should not be overlooked. If you fail to find travel-mates, you can always use the age-old travelers’ trick of looking for them. Caminosantiagoacaballo.com and Caminoacaballo.com offer all types of routes and itineraries. If you rule out the possibility of travelling with an organization, it might be a good idea to take a road trip first, to reserve stables for your horse. Stables are few and far between, which is not the case when it comes to hotel accommodation. Of course, it is also advisable to leave the hard feed that your horse normally eats, at the stable when you reserve it, so that your mount need not suffer excessive changes in its feed. The prolonged effort, a new diet and the tension of traveling could cause conflicts for the horses. In fact, when it comes to preparation, it would be a good idea to consider such an excursion as a marathon. A resistance test needs a series of decisions that could condition the experience. Selecting the right horse is essential. The horse of choice must be willing to work, be forward going, enjoy the journey, accustomed to all types of noise and have the necessary functional training to make it operative. The most beautiful horse is not always the best. That is a fact right from day one. On the Way The conditioning factors prior to the preparation shrink to nothing when it comes to the actual Way. Whether you settle for the route from Somport or Roncesvalles, the experts and guides calculate that the trip will take sixteen (16) days. Of course, it is all a matter of speed and timing. There are longer sections, ideal for cantering, between Nåjera and Burgos, and 53

another stretch between Frómista and León. These are combined with harsh legs in the mountains, such as the Villafranca del Bierzo mountain pass and the climb to O Cebreiro, which are always a challenge. Once in Galicia, it is commonplace to encounter other

stable, it is hard and continuous work where lameness is frequent. That is why the last few kilometers or miles, from Palas de Rey to Santiago, are especially enjoyable. On the one hand, you know that you have completed the Way; on the other hand, it is the joy of having done it on horseback.

fifty to sixty kilometer stretches are not too much for any well trained horse. riders and horses. It seems that the last 100 kilometers (62 miles) to earn one’s pardon for sins makes the stretch a more accessible challenge. The views from Padornelo are only comparable to those of the woods near Sarria. Although it seems that there are two equestrian routes, those of Sarria and Samos, villages such as San Mamede do Camiño and San Cristovo will undoubtedly provide unexpected sights. Daily stretches are usually 50 to 60 km (30-37 miles); this is not too much for a horse living in a field, with good training or one that is used to the route. For horses that spend their days in a stall, inside a 54

Travelling the Way of St. James on horseback costs well above €6000; this amount could be slightly less—about €3000—if the departure point is from Astorga. In most cases, the decision lies in the amount of time available for the endeavor and individual interests. It is not just travelling the Way, but enjoying everything the experience has to offer. The castle in Ponferrada is as important as the one in Villafranca. The Castrojeriz Collegiate is as timeworthy as the Church in Viana. The Molinaseca Bridge is just as beautiful as the one known as Puente la Reina over the Arga River. The decision is in your hands. ¡¡

WHAT TO REMEMBER - Although inspections are rare, it is always advisable to have all documentation regarding vaccines in your travel pouch, together with passport and federation id, which offers advantages for owners. - A veterinarian check-up before the trip rules out possible injuries or wounds and is almost as important as a luxury hotel. - of course, your horse should always be equipped with new shoes. carrying an emergency kit to remove a shoe or extra nails to fix it is a must. it is not that difficult and it will no doubt save time and problems. - Another option is to carry a set of rubber boots for equine emergencies. the same holds true for the rider. - equipment must also be carefully placed on the horse. Appropriately placed saddle bags and correctly strapped belongings are better than having the rider carry a backpack. in this case, the age-old saying of “pride comes before a fall” is applicable. Western esthetics may be very attractive, but in this day and age, there are multi-use and lightweight items that save time, energy and stress. - A recommendable and essential garment is the helmet, which very few use. A good helmet not only protects you, but it also serves as a sun shade and can be used as a drinking bowl (for your horse) or a dipper (for you), should the need arise. the same holds true for a short whip. it is as useful as it is esthetic. it is not uncommon to have to push other horses away, or confront other animals that might appear along the pathway.

ast June saw the Presidential elections at the Extremadura Association of the Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders, where the candidacy led by Carmen Pinilla was elected. She came to this election backed by Fernando Molina and José Mª Fernández-Daza as Vicepresidents; Ramón Jiménez as Treasurer; Isabel Martin as the Secretary; Miguel Granda and Teodoro Arroyo were elected as members-atlarge. The new board is eagerly looking forward performing their duties at this Association founded in 1988, with the following guidelines: To attend to the suggestions and questions posed by all the member breeders, reinforce internal communication, ensure the invitation of all the breeders to meetings and fight against the present apathy, a consequence of the poor marketing in recent years. To promote AECCPRE in Extremadura, attending competitions of different disciplines, conferences, discussions and workshops; to continue rewarding the best Purebred Spanish Horses at competitions held in Extremadura while making the Association

To strengthen ties with the institutions of the Extremadura Government: Regional Ministry of Agriculture, University Veterinary Hospital in Cáceres, Censyra (Center for Animal Selection & Reproduction) and General Office for Trade and Extremadura Avante (Regional Investment Office), in an effort to improve and start up new national and international promotional programs. To promote Conformation competitions organized by the Association. Although they have a prestige history without incidents and there being a magnificent atmosphere among the breeders, in these difficult years participation has been affected and despite the availability of grants for horses competing at the most recent competitions of Zafra and Trujillo. To continue publishing and improving ExtremaduraPRE, a magazine that has, in a very short time, become one of the Association’s best signs of identity and a meeting place for the breeders that it represents. ¡¡

Workshop about abortions in mares

J

uly 11, the Purebred Spanish Horse Association of Castile-La Mancha (ASOCAMAN-PRE) organized a workshop about abortions in mares, by Concepción Gómez-Cuétara, a doctor of Veterinary science and Technical Director of the Callejones del Duende Equine Reproduction Center. Concepción Gómez Cuétara spoke of the different causes behind abortions in mares, both sporadic and infectious. She went into depth regarding abortions due to rhinopneumonitis (equine herpesvirus) and infectious placentitis— the main current causes of abortion at stud farms. She continued to explain how to diagnose such events, and, above all, how to prevent them thanks to vaccination protocols and control methods that can be established. At the end of her report, the doctor responded to all the questions posed by participants. The general opinion of the attendees was very positive, since it helped

them acquire greater knowledge on the topic. As a finale, hor d’oeuvres were served so that participants could discuss and exchange information regarding subjects of interest. ¡¡

Fritz Stahlecker Clinic regarding the HSH method

ave Johnston and Dr. Carole FrancisSwayze opened the clinic with a report on the theory that underlies the German HSH method (Hand Saddle Hand / Hand-seat-hand) with the horse Soñador. The goal behind this method is to prepare the horse, aged between two and four years, for Dressage, without riding it. A majority of the work is bitless, it is centered on the walk and focuses on the mental development of the young horse by making him conscious of his hind-leg placement in response to requests from the handler. The Stahlecker method is an alternative to the current preparation systems and it allows horses to learn without having to carry the rider’s weight until as much as 5 years old. However, by that age, horses trained using this method have learned all the basic lessons for Grand Prix. After introductory remarks, Carole Francis-Swayze turned theory into practice with a double-line lunging demonstration with Soñador. This technique was developed to familiarize young horses with input coming from both sides of its body, as if it

was being ridden. Double line lunging also facilitates the development of proper bend in the young horse, by guarding against the haunches being thrown out, as can happen when using a single line. Carole explained how it complements HSH work by facilitating walk/canter/walk transitions which are a precursor to canter pirouette. Cowboy Joel Sheridan has perfected this approach to habituate young horses to move away from pressure of the rider’s leg. Nevertheless, it is not only a preparation for Dressage, but rather it is a working tool that instills obedience into the horse. The attendees then headed out to a second arena, in this case, to watch Dave Johnston show off the crux of the HSH approach. This included basic hind-leg crossing patterns such as travers, 1/2 pass and working pirouette along with shoulder in. Also included were square halts to make the young horse conscious of his hind-leg placement. Also fundamental are exercises which differentiate the walk. These exercises practice collected, medium, and extended walks, all of which have the effect of lengthening and shortening the horse’s frame to develop longitudinal suppleness. The presentation of the HSH method concluded with a series of short, rhythmic steps whilst walking forward then backwards several times in a row. It is preparation for piaffe. Avi Cohen and Uriano rounded out the day’s activities by presenting the flashy result of methodical in-hand work Spanish style. The two performed piaffe, Spanish walk, and pesade among other movements whilst long reining, demonstrating that he is a stallion with aptitude, patience and blessed with great willingness. Cohen concluded his part of the clinic by riding Uranio himself, showing off the stallion’s particular flair. ¡¡

Swiss breeders to visit SICAB 2015

T

o celebrate the 25th edition of the International PRE Trade Fair—SICAB 2015— the PRE Breeders and Owners Association of Switzerland will send a delegation for a 3-day visit at the most important single-breed equine Trade Fair in the world, dedicated to the Purebred Spanish Horse, held in Sevilla from the 17 to 22 November. The Swiss Association was created in 1988 and currently has some 90 members. It has drafted a new promotion and communication plan based on the creation of a new corporate image. Also, a new website to spread news of the Association’s activities and to better promote the PRE horse, both inside and outside of Switzerland has been designed, together with a newsletter that seeks to establish better communications with its members and provide them greater information about the sector, both nationally and internationally. In Switzerland, interest in the Purebred Spanish Horse has remained positive for many years. Nevertheless, with a more sustained promotion, the

number of enthusiast and breeders, who love this breed, will increase. In 2014, there were some 40 changes of ownership for horses registered with the PRE Stud Book. Most had been imported from Spain, but 8 foals were born within Switzerland. Anually, the Association will participate in the Swiss Equine Trade Fair (BEA) in Berne. This is a very important agricultural and breeder event in the country, as it brings together a multitude of equine breeds, where the Purebred Spanish Horse a growing object of great interest. ¡¡
