A Promising Future Once SIcAB cOncluded, I SenT A leTTer TO expreSS my ApprecIATIOn for your help in ensuring that this most recent edition of the International PRE Trade Fair—number twenty-five—took place with no untoward events. From here, I would like to repeat that acknowledgment, because thanks to each and every one of you, SICAB has, to a large extent, been a success. Of course, there were one or two defects, which have already been logged; nevertheless, I assure you that these points will be improved upon. For me, it has was extremely encouraging to receive over a dozen letters providing constructive criticism, sharing your opinion on matters that must be improved at forthcoming editions. AS BOTh preSIdenT And Breeder, whAT delIghTS me most were the many transactions taking place at SICAB; these lead me to be moderately optimistic about the future of PRE breeders in the medium-term. It is evident that attendance by breeders and enthusiasts from abroad became a stimulus that transformed into a number of operations. This, in turn, pushes me to ponder two aspects: first; the success arising from the change of dates has been positive, in which case, these will be retained for forthcoming editions. Secondly, we must emphasize our efforts on the international scene, so that SICAB continues to be—if at all possible and to a greater extent—the true driving force behind our economy as PRE breeders. my OpTImISm IS nOT BASed SOlely On ThIS IncreASe In BuSIneSS TrAnSAcTIOnS, but also on the observation of a number of details that we should all bear in mind. Together, these aspects should help us achieve improvements within the sector—there is no need for excessive optimism because at the end of the day, it will be a simple improvement. cOmmercIAl TIeS wITh mexIcO Are Once AgAIn Open And runnIng SmOOThly. This was only possible thanks to the negotiating efforts of ANCCE—although many have obstinately denied this fact, both from the Ministry in Spain and Mexico’s Department known as SAGARPA. It is also symptomatic that, during 2015, ANCCE has, with regards to membership numbers, grown for first time in the last half a decade; during this past year, more than 80 breeders have signed up as new members. Likewise, the Stud Book has continued to see slow but constant growth since 2014. In general, if the slight economic improvement continues, it could be concluded that we are entering 2016 with none of the dark omens that have accompanied us in preceding years. I wAnT TO ASSure yOu ThAT The execuTIve mAnAgemenT continues to be open to your every proposal. Suggestions will always be borne in mind provided that they are seeking the general well-being of the breeders and presented from moderation and with a desire to improve. AmOng OTher Such ThOughTS, I would like to wish you all an excellent New Year, knowing that with your help, we will continue to move forward. ¡¡ 3

The Duke of Alba, Honorary Patron of the PRE Awards

King Felipe of Spain once again accepted being the Honorary President of the International Purebred Spanish Horse Trade Fair. This fact confirms the backing and support of Spain’s Royal household towards ANCCE as a National Breeder Association and its more than 40 years of operations to improve and promote the Purebred Spanish Horse throughout the world. For SICAB’s Silver Jubilee, ANCCE appointed the Duke of Alba, Carlos Fitz-James Stuart Martínez de Irujo, as the honorary Patron of the Purebred Spanish Horse Awards to publically recognize the House of Alba for its unconditional support and sponsorship of PRE Horses and Spain’s culture in all of its expressions. At the gala dinner, celebrated after the Awards Ceremony, he offered an emotional speech in which he evoked his mother, and expresses his unconditional support of Spanish Horses by requesting that the UNESCO declare the breed as Intangible Cultural Heritage. As the Duke stated, “I am deeply moved to sponsor this 2015 edition of SICAB in honor of the incomparable figure of my mother, the Duchess of Alba de Tormes. She loved Andalusia, especially Sevilla, and she loved the Spanish Horse with true passion.” He mentioned that the House of Alba has always been linked to the world of horses; he listed a number of relatives who were known for their riding skills, as is the Duke, as well as his brothers Alfonso and Cayetano. This latter is a member of Spain’s Olympic team. His great-uncle Hernando Fitz-James Stuart y Falcó, Duke of Peñaranda de Duero, was a member of the 1920 Polo Olympic team in Antwerp. This is why, as he emphasized, the House of Alba and the world of horses “have always enjoyed very close ties.” The importance of the equine world is evident throughout history. The Duke of Alba reviewed the excellence of the PRE, the fame of which began under Roman rule, continued into the 16th Century with Philip II of Spain, the creation of the Royal Stud and until today. Proof is the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, created in the late 20th Century. It has become the best ambassador for the breed thanks to its world tours with the show “How Andalusian Horses Dance” in which it provides a sample of the breed’s greatness. These and other reasons have motivated the Duke of Alba, at the request made by a number of equestrian associations, to ask the UNESCO declare the Purebred Spanish Horse as Intangible Cultural Heritage. ¡¡

WORLD PRE HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL STARS AT THE 25TH EDITION OF SICAB

The official presentation before the press was held on the morning of November 5th to announce the 25th edition of SICAB 2015, the International PRE Trade Fair, at the Sevilla City Hall. A Press Conference was summonsed and presided by Juan Carlos Cabrera, the Alderman for Mobility, Security and Major Festivities. He was assisted by Juan Tirado, the President of ANCCE, José Luis García Palacios, the President of Caja Rural del Sur (Savings Bank) and Jesús Rojas, the Manager of FIBES. At the Press Conference, the many novelties for the 25th anniversary celebration were announced as well as the venue dates, which returned to its original month of November. Undoubtedly, the most important news was the celebration of the World PRE Horse Championship; this grand Conformation Final was another step towards the internationalization of SICAB, with the incorporation of a title that transcends the borders of Spain. The Alderman for Mobility, Security and Major Festivities, Juan Carlos Cabrera, inaugurated the Press Conference by underscoring the prominence of the From left to right, event for Sevilla’s autumn calendar, “as it translates José luis garcía palacios, into an important event that attracts horse enthusiasts Juan carlos cabrera, Juan Tirado from more than sixty countries.” José Luis García and Jesús rojas. Palacios, the President of Caja Rural del Sur, stressed the significance of SICAB for the savings & loan bank. During his intervention, he stated that (SICAB) “is an event in which the bank has participated in many editions over the past twenty-five years, something that we are celebrating in 2015, and that with the passing of time, has become a world reference for the equestrian world.” Jesús Rojas, Manager of the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones (fair grounds) in Sevilla, pointed out that SICAB has “great international projection that garnishes benefits, both in terms of the city’s image and for the turnover it generates for Sevilla and its province, and of course, for the rest of (the region of) Andalusia.” Finally, Juan Tirado, the President of ANCCE, announced the latest developments coinciding with SICAB’s Silver Jubilee. “For the first time in our history, we will hold the World PRE Championship. This event will reward the Best Breeder in the ANCCE Cup for Dressage, and to promote breeder fellowship, we have launched the 1st Presentation Competition for ANCCE Breeders.” Being such a special year, as is SICAB’s anniversary, ANCCE will once again dedicate the event to breeders “as the main protagonists of the event, in

Pure Art appreciation to their efforts and commitment since the very beginning,” insisted the President. Lastly, the PRE Awards will be granted to wellknown people and breed ambassadors that will bring together familiar faces from among Spain’s aristocracy, as well as the worlds of fashion, sports and music. Tirado pointed out that, as a breeder and President of ANCCE, “I feel truly proud that an event such as SICAB is able to celebration its 25th edition having had no interruptions. It is something that few events can claim, whether at a more local or even national level.” He also expressed his appreciation for the support provided by institutions, sponsors, the media and breeders over the years. ¡¡

SICAB’s 2015 silver jubilee began on the 17th of November, as did the Final for the Purebred Spanish Horse Conformation Championship. The keynote this year was that this championship became the World PRE Championship, with which its international projection increased. Some of the very best stallions and mares in the breed catalog participated in the event; these finalists had qualified at previous competitions throughout the year to earn any of the World Championship titles in the various categories.

There were 351 PRE horses from 138 stud farms participating in the Conformation Competition. All in all, there were 1109 21

horses competing in the various disciplines. Currently, there seems to be a slight recovery with regards to the breedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future. Undoubtedly, SICAB has seen greater participation from foreign stud farms than ever before; many of these have established a team in Spain while other participated with horses bred and raised in the country of origin. Among the Special Awards, there were even winners from faraway lands: the USA and Guatemala. In addition to the latest competition innovations as mentioned above--the World Championship--there have been others. These include the modernization of infrastructures, with the implementation of a new

geotextile arena, an increased number of box seats to attend breeder needs, the rationalization of spaces, with which the Grand Finale took place in a single arena for the benefit of both participants and audience. The only exception was the weekend tests--Sections 13 and 14 for 3-mare cobras (applicable towards the World’s Best Breeder Award) and 5-mare cobras (applicable only in the case of a tie).

Regarding the judges, Higinio González, Vicente Jodar, Víctor Manuel Huertas and José Luis Rubiales repeated their work, with the incorporation of veteran judges Manuel Serna-Borja and Javier Bayo. Another two judges linked to the Dressage world judged 23

the Functionality sections: Antonio Vázquez and Jorge Conde. They were all responsible for the correct judging of PRE conformation and functionality, divided into the 12 sections and the election of the Special Awards. For the first time in SICAB history, these included the titles as World PRE Champions and the most prestigious honor for a breeder: World’s Best Breeder and Best Exhibitor. This year, five breeders sought the Best Breeder Award: Yeguada Ferrero, Hnos. Vara Muñoz Casillas, Miguel Ángel Cárdenas, Mater Christi and María Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera, most of whom were repeat seekers from the 2014 edition. The World’s Best Breeder Award went to the owners Yeguada

Mater Christi. The María Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera Stud Farm, which strove to renew its 2014 title, was granted the honor of being Reserve Best Breeder. Another seven stud farms, contrary to the four seen at the previous edition, presented horses with their own brand as well as that of others to compete for the World’s Best Exhibitor: Juan José Montes, Albert Boya, Centurión, Juan Miguel Muñoz, Yeguada Trujillo, SR4 and San Nicolás ESP. This honor was bestowed upon breeder Juan José Montes, from Murcia.

Juan José Montes and bred by Yeguada Ferrero--at the 2014 edition, this horse was Reserve Champion of Spain. Garbi VII, owned by Juan José Montes and bred by José Franco Sánchez, was the World Stallion Champion and the Champion of Section 8--for 4-year-old stallions-where the horse earned a total score of 104.938 points. His breed quality was most outstanding, as were his head, neck, other regions and of course, his movement. On the second day of competitions, he was close to earning the Best Functionality Award in his section, with a total score of 26.000. In the end, he was surpassed by Solano XIV, owned by Yeguada Trujillo and bred by Yeguada Torreluna, with a score of

26.250, who ended up as the horse with Best Functionality in that Section. The World Functionality Champion went to Fer Gallardo; at the same time, this horse was proclaimed Reserve World Champion; it seems that history repeats itself. The horse performed a wonderful Functionality test to earn 28.000 points that placed him on the podium. Reserve World Functionality Champion was Solano XIV, son of Yaco de Torreluna, the 2014 Champion of Spain.

Ocalzo Cen, owned by Yeguada Centurión, was proclaimed as World Adult Champion of Movement. This bay horse--with four white socks--was most outstanding in his paces, especially his 27

Candidates as World Mare Champion were Entrega Mater from Yeguada Mater Christi, Naviera XXVIII from Miguel Granda Losada and JT Trujillana, owned by Yeguada Centurión and bred by Yeguada Juan Tirado. The judges unanimously proclaimed the mare Entrega Mater as the SICAB 2015 World Mare Champion and the Champion of her section with a total score of 108.167. This 5-year-old gray is the daughter of Judío VII out of Frondosa J.F; she is outstanding in her breed quality to offer excellent back, withers and forearms.

Colt/fIlly CHAMPIonS Among the contestants for World Youngstock Champion at SICAB 2015 were the firstplace winners in Sections 4 and 6, which corresponds to two and three year old colts, respectively. Armas Inervo from Yeguada Trujillo and bred by Florencio Moreno, with a total score of 101.917 points was Reserve Colt Champion while Raparigo Var, owned by José María Anguas Medina and bred by Hermanos Varas Muñoz

Casillas with 104.917 points was World Colt Champion. This horse, son of Guapito VI out of Rapariga, is outstanding in a number of regions: shoulder, withers, and forearm. The SICAB 2015 World Filly Champion was Pícara de Ramos, owned by Yeguada SR4 and bred by Miguel Granda Losada; despite being a debutant breeder, this stud farm harvested good results. This bay twoyear-old was first in Section 3 with a score of 105.583; she was outstanding for her head, breast, chest and abdomen. The Reserve World Filly Champion Award went to Quieta AC. She placed second in the same section as the Filly

When it came to the Youngstock Champion of Movement, the colt Yelmo Azores, owned by Yeguada de Azores-Antonio Ruiz Fernández, was the all-out winner. He disputed the Award with Hechura Mater from Mater Christi, Yucatán de Ramos from Yeguada SR4 and bred by Yeguada Torrehermosa and Ruda Cen from Centurión. After demonstrating his extended, suspended and elegant trot, he was proclaimed Champion with 24.500 points. CoBRAS In Section 13 for 3-mare cobras--included when

tallying for the Best Breeder Award, the cobra with Estampa Mater, Emblema Mater and Distinguida Mater, owned by Yeguada Mater Christi, was the winner with 113.500 points. Close behind, with a final score of 113.000, was another cobra from the María Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera stud farm that included Muflona, Melodía XIV and Jaquetona XVI; they, together with mares Omega XXVI and Mesonera XXIX, in the 5-mare cobra, came out top of Section 14 with 111.167 points. To conclude this first World Championship, the ANCCE Board of Directors presented the trophies to the various Champions and Reserve Champions of this innovative and successful edition. ¡¡

with the experience of eight years, yeguada mater christi has returned home with the Award as the world’s Best Breeder at SIcAB 2015. what does it mean to attain maximum recognition in such a short time? In 2007, we selected and acquired a series of mares that were Conformation and Movement Champions; at the same time, they were the daughters and granddaughters of Champions, and so there is generational history. In summary, these horses were genetically programmed for excellence; a fact that was confirmed by their success at competitions. Using embryonic transfer, we obtained up to five foals from each mare the first year. At the same time, these foals were from stallions that were Conformation, Functionality and Dressage Champions of Spain. This has allowed us to quickly reach conclusions regarding the sire that best meets each mare and to then focus on our work and define our bloodline. After the initial four years, we abandoned embryonic transfer and bred directly with the daughters of those champions; by then, with our own brand. The results were as good as with their dams, and we began to use the sons--now with our brand--as sires. The efforts, the constant dedication and critical observation of our stud farm team, especially the help of God as the only creator, have facilitated our success. entrega mater has become our stud farm’s star horse, as she is the 2015 world champion. what characterizes this mare? When it comes to her conformation, she has an excellent top line--if you allow me to use an expression, “she is heavenly touched by heaven.” Moreover, she boasts bred quality, beauty and femininity, with good alignment, with a set of exceptional forms and very

good mechanics in her movements. Undoubtedly, she is one of those horses that combines a very sporty constitution with exceptional breed qualities. These facts have been recognized by dozens of judges who have seen her at the various competitions where she has participated in recent years, including the World Championship. Ultimately, she has that set of characteristics that identify Mater horses and that we sought to fix in our bloodline. The most important fact is that she is a mare with strongly fixed genetics and that she transmits what she is. This has been verified through the first foals. Regarding her brothers--also with our brand--they are champions in a number of countries, including Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua. These horses are now providing their new owners with champions! your 3-mare cobra was proclaimed world champion in Section 13. what are their strong points? It is a very young cobra, made up of three daughters of Triunfadora XXX, the three-time Champion of Spain; they boast their dam’s characteristics, thus making her a unique horse in our history. The conformation is very similar to that of their dam, and with their sisters. They are like 3 drops of water that are overflowing with breed qualities; they are excellent as individuals while at the same time, they are uniform, if not to say they are almost identical when together; an added difficulty is the fact that they are grays. In conclusion, they are an excellent sample of what Mater Christi is. They clearly define the bloodline we have created, something that is recognizable in our horses; also, in this case, with genetically fixed traits. Their offspring are proof that these traits are transmitted as well as those of their dam, Triunfadora XXX.

mares gloria and genio mater have been reserve world champions in Sections 5 and 6, respectively, while and hechura mater was movement champion in Section 3. what is your vision of this accomplishment? In our case, mares foal in spring; the fact that the three colts brought to SICAB were on the podium shows our continuous selection efforts with each group of foals, as there is always room for improvement. On the other hand, it is once again a matter of fixing genetics and traits at the stud farm, as these foals arise from the intervention of reproductive horses with our brand; Hechura Mater is a daughter of Desaire Mater and Gloria Mater out of Bulería Mater. What is most important is that all three have a wonderful future as adults. That is when more will be said. Right now, they are youngstock and they are still growing. In our bloodline, our horses develop over time until they reach adulthood. desaire mater place third in Section 10. what is outstanding about him? This is the second consecutive year that we hold quality places at SICAB. In 2014, we were Movement Champions in this section and first in Conformation. In 2015, the development of our horses has once again placed us among the top three in Functionality. The truth is that the horses are better every year, and we hope that “the third time’s lucky,” as he is one of the best horses you will see in the arena. His best is that which he offers as a sire, transmitting beauty, conformational qualities and movements to his descendants. what plans does mater christi have for 2016? On the one hand, to continue to advance with future foals to improve and develop; on the other hand, we want to continue to share our genetics with other stud farms that have chosen us to improve their stock in other countries. This year, SICAB has once again held the ANCCE Cup Grand Final for Dressage after a very competitive season, in which there has been a significant increase in the number of participating horses. Qualifying for this Final was a success of its own accord. Certain levels had more than 80 participating horses/riders, of which only ten qualified for SICAB. In the category for Juniors, an increase in the number of participants was also noted. This category will have more participants at future editions of SICAB. ANCCE undertook a series of changes in the Rules & Regulations of the ANCCE Cup for Dressage. Thanks to these changes, which have served to promote participation and make the competition even more dynamic, they have allowed us to see new aspects that need improvement to continue moving forward, and of course, to proceed successfully. This commission has incorporated a number of innovations at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Final, which we consider spot on. Using a geotextile surface on the arena has been a noticeable and qualitative change for breeders and riders. Undoubtedly, this facilitates maintenance and the quality of the arena surface and we will improve this further in future editions of SICAB. The inclusion of international judges from abroad increases the prestige of the competition. It grants the event a more international flare. At the same time, it helps breeders understand the criteria that our horses face at other international events. With the creation of the ANCCE Cup Best Breeder Award, once again the spotlight is placed on breeders. This differentiates the event from regular, federation competitions. At the same time, it allows us to know which stud farms have greater participation and the best results. Lastly, rewarding each category independently on the one hand and the first places on the general qualification roster recognizes the best individual exercises of horses that have successfully participated in the difficult qualification process to be at SICAB. They merit this recognition for their effort. The advances made and the improvements seen not only please us, but they motivate us to continue working and moving forward in this discipline, which today, has a major impact on the Purebred Spanish Horse, its breeding, the market, etc. in addition to being the sport where the best results are seen. We are well aware that the road before us is long and winding.

Impressive! The number of juniors participating in the grand final for Dressage was impressive. A number of young riders were left on the participation doorstep, but this is wonderful news as it indicates that for future editions, the number of riders in this category will be expanded. Seeing this competition shows that the Purebred Spanish Horse is ideal for children and young people. It is extraordinary to see how, at a venue full of noise, with the audience close at hand, the horses are handled by children between 9 and 19 with no problems whatsoever. This year, participation numbers almost doubled those of last year. For the most part, the scores earned by second place winners were even better than those in first place last year, and they earned percentages that were nothing to be scoffed at. Many of the horses and riders show good technique and were rigorous in their training. Proof is in the averages obtained, which were much higher than at previous editions. In the U12 category, Natalia Calderón riding Ausente, owned by Jesús Carrasco Quitanilla dominated the scene both days. She earned an average of 66.833%. Obvio F, ridden by Joan Llargué, participated in the 2014 Final. This horse, owned by Yeguada Llargué and bred by Ramón Folgarola, ran into difficulties on the first day, but together with the score on the second day managed to come out victorious in the U14 category with a final average of 66.823%. In the category Juveniles 0* (U18), the winner on both days was Poderoso XXXIII. This horse, owned by Francisco Santana and ridden by Andrea Herrera, earned a 66.798% average. Juveniles (U18) is a category that implements a number of technical difficulties. Gonzalo Rodríguez surpassed them riding his horse Vistoso XI, from Yeguada Sola Nogales. They qualified both days, to earn a final score of 68.191% in the category with the highest number of participants. Finally, among Young Riders, Alfonso Gormaz rode Fantástico IPA. Owned and bred by Eugassada IPA, this horse and his rider participated in the most difficult category for Juniors. Their best results were obtained on the second day,

Among 4-year-olds, C Castelnovo, owned by Yeguada Castelnovo, and ridden by Luis Javier Cañada was the winner with an average of 77.500%. This horse offered very correct paces, his walk and canter boasted excellent balance. He is a very complete horse that very clearly marks the four stride rhythm using his entire top line, although a little lacking in length of stride in the walk. During the preliminary exercise, he obtained his highest score: 78.200%. Second place was for Oficial de Susaeta, owned by Yeguada Susaeta and ridden by Guillermo García. With a great length of stride in walk, although without correctly defining the four stride rhythm, his extended trot was unrushed, and forward-going with frankness and determination. He obtained a final average of 76.500%; he was at his best on the second day. Third place was for Duque JJ, owned by Juan José Montes and ridden by Carlos Pinta Salguero. During both tests, this horse proved to have a good forward-going attitude, he was expressive and attentive to his rider’s aids, which earned him the same average for both the preliminary and the final: 75.600%. These three horses will need careful care to maintain all of their qualities. ¡¡

The winner in the category for 5-year-olds was Joya FS from Yeguada Arroyomonte, ridden by Alberto García, with a score well above the other participants thanks to an 81.400% average, granted by the judges on the second day. Both in the Preliminary as well as in the Final, horse and rider offered a very regular, clean and harmonic performance, to show the best that this mare had to give. Perhaps, being that she is young, she lacked a bit of length of stride and impulsion in the extended trot. Undoubtedly, her walk and canter are her best paces; her walk has a very clear four-time, with good length of stride; her canter was regular, with impulsion and extraordinary balance, which was noticeable both in the true and the counter canter. Her final score was 81.100%, thus placing her at the top of the roster. She was the horse with the highest percentage in this Grand Final of the ANCCE Cup for Dressage. With a 76.100% average, Fiti de Amtuna from Andrea Martínez, bred by Adrodiego and ridden by David Quilez, placed second. Proving to be a very obedient horse, he showed four clear beats in walk, with sufficient length of stride and his trot was very regular, although there were times when he failed to remain straight, and his canter was well balanced. Right behind, at a short distance was Jara FS, also owned by Yeguada Arroyomonte and ridden by Alberto García. Horse and rider performed without any serious mistakes, with a very expressive forehand in trot and a walk with very good attitude and length of stride; 74.900% was their final average. ¡¡

By the time a horse has reached the category for 6-yearolds, it must execute a number of seriously difficult exercises, which the horse has learned and overcome in previous years. This is visible, especially in those exercises where great flexibility is demanded, such as shoulder-in, half-pass and small circles. The unquestionable winner was Intruso de Mile, owned by Yeguada Mile and bred by Pedro Maza Íñiguez, with a final score of 78.700%. This average was well above the others thanks to the horse’s excellent trot that was full and elastic, with excellent impulsion and extension, and with his hindquarters really well engaged. His extended trot was magnificent, with a very good rhythm in the transitions, both in the lateral work as well as in the medium and extended trot. Rider Jordi Domingo rode the exercises very well. Mayordomo Caldero II, from Ganadería El Caldero, showed a lack of flow in some of the changes. In spite of that, we saw a performance that offered quality, cleanliness and a serious and very elegant presentation. His submission and response to the aids of rider Sarah Rengel Spindlow, were magnificent. They earned a 76.200% average in the final. Third place went to Ules Vdos, from Finca Lo Tacón and bred by Hnos. Camacho Benítez, with an average of 75.000%. This horse was very expressive and presented a trot that was typical of the PRE and had a good length of stride, especially in the medium and extended trots. He seemed to be a little unsteady in his contact and had limited flow and straightness in the flying changes. The experience and expertise of rider José Antonio García Mena also earned a few points. ¡¡

The category for 7-year-olds could be considered a turning point for young horses prior to facing the challenges of the Prix St Georges. Although there are no major technical differences, it is true that the tests are somewhat more intense and complex, as they demand more of the horse. For the first time, there are counter-changes and a greater number of flying changes and transitions. Ícaro MG, owned by Hierro MG, bred by Yeguada Candau and ridden by Claudio Castilla, held his ground in first place on both days. He boasted a trot typical to the breed, expressive, and with good engagement of the hindquarters. His extended and medium trots were magnificent. Undoubtedly, his canter was his best pace, uphill, great length of stride and bouncy, with good changes. Essentially, it was a good, clean, quality test that earned a final score of 70.823%. Second place went to Joyero VG from Yeguada Barcelona Horses and bred by Yeguada Velasco-González. His rider was Agustí Elías, who showed us a horse with a very good attitude in all three paces, performing a clean and quality test. He was well in the hand, although on occasion, he became slightly short in the neck. His final score was 67.598%. In general, this is a good horse with an excellent future in Dressage. Bemol de Valdesol, owned by Yeguada Valdesol and bred by Gonzalo Valenzuela Ruiz took third place. This horse presented a very regular and expressive trot, with good length of stride and flexibility in the lateral exercises. He maintained his rhythm and cadence throughout both tests, which were ridden by Isidro Maldonado, to obtain a final score of 68.082%. ¡¡

This was a battle of titans! With the expressiveness and elegance that we are accustomed to, Manchego ARB, owned by Duran Vicens and bred by Yeguada San Antonio, fought hard for first place in St Georges against powerful Napoleón Candau, from Yeguada Candau. This latter offered an excellent test on the first day, contrary to the second day in a Kür that was somewhat long and with too much time between exercises. Both horses produced quality performances, each on their own day. Manchego, ridden by Cristina Durán, performed a kür that was very compact, clean and high quality in most of the exercises. Her impeccable presentation, with its attractive music, earned points to obtain an average of 70.939%, thus placing her first on the roster. Napoleón, ridden by Anthony Lewis Pelling, owned by Yeguada Candau, offered a spectacular trot, with outstanding lateral exercises and a series of flying changes that were clean, big and fluid. Their average for the two days was 70.176%, which placed them second in the line-up. Third place was for Glorioso de Jama from Yeguada Jama and bred by Hnos. Domingo Pérez. This horse was ridden by Julio Claudio Castilla, who performed two very regular performances, improving his score in the kür with a very clean test and with a good extended trot that was regular, cadenced and had a great length of stride. A glitch in the demi pirouettes during his Prix St George performance lowered his average to 69.348%. ¡¡

In Grand Prix, there were no doubts. Of the seven participants, two were outstanding by an acceptable margin: Jimeno I A and Osado 04. These horses earned between six and two percentage points, respectively, above all of the other contestants. Jimeno I A, ridden by Ignacio López Porras, owned by Yeguada Francisco Triviño and bred by Isaac Albarrán Marzal was the clear frontrunner. He performed a clean test, without any mistakes, and an impressive Kür where he was technically better than on the first day! He boasted an excellent piaffe without forsaking willingness and on the spot. Both his one- and two-time changes were very good, and his pirouettes were small but very well balanced. In the opinion of the judges, this horse deserved his place on the general roster, with a score of 69.238%. Osado 04 followed suit. This horses, from Dehesa la Granja and ridden by Marine Suliveau made a very good entrance into the arena. Perhaps his collection and balance in the pirouettes made him lose a few points in his final score. The test was performed with regularity in general and had few mistakes in its execution. There were moments of brilliance, such as in the piaffe and in the counter-changes to obtain a final score of 65.538%. A short distance behind, in third place was Íbero XX, owned by Valeriano Higuera Vioque and ridden by Javier Higuera, who showed us a horse with high quality paces and very well performed exercises such as the extended trot. He made technical mistakes in the one-time changes during the Grand Prix, but he corrected these during the Kür, when he performed an improved test, to increase his final average by six points to earn 63.363%. ¡¡

This year, ANCCE has rewarded the efforts of breeders by creating a novel Award, the Best Breeder Award in the ANCCE Cup for Dressage. This honor goes to the breeder who tallies the most points from his/her horses participating in the ANCCE Cup. As stated in the Rules, the candidates that qualified for this Award were Antonio San Román Morán, Yeguada La Angostura, Antonio Morera Vallejo, Yeguada Arroyomonte, Yeguada Candau, José Antonio Olivas Agustín and Gonzalo Valenzuela Ruiz. Based on the scores and percentages obtained by each of the horses, the three stud farms with the best averages were Yeguada Candau –with 105 points for horses Ícaro MG, Napoleón Candau and Urdido Candau, Yeguada Arroyomonte –with 102 points for horses Jara FS, Joya FS and Isleño FS, and breeder Gonzalo Valenzuela Ruiz– with 78 points for horses Bajel de Valdesol, Bemol de Valdesol and Quincel de Valdesol. Being that Ignacio Candau is the owner of the winning stud farm, president of the ANCCE Sports Commission, and creator of this Award, he withdrew, thus granting the breeder with the next highest score –Yeguada Arroyomonte– with the honor, thanks to the already mentioned results obtained. Second place went to breeder Gonzalo Valenzuela Ruiz, thanks to his 78 points from his wining horses. Yeguada Arroyomonte is, therefore, the first stud farm to achieve this title, thanks to the results obtained by two of its mares and a stallion born on Yeguada San Bartolomé de Pinares in Avila. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Spanish High School

Annually, the ANCCE Cup for Spanish High School is included in the SICAB competition program. This discipline stems from wartime equitation as used in the 17th Century, when light cavalry was created in response to recently invented weapons. The participation of horses and riders in the International PRE Trade Fair has enjoyed an 80% increase in comparison with previous years. There were six categories: three for young horses (four, five and six-years of age) and another three for adult horses (Medium, Advanced and Superior level). This year, the most recently incorporated category was for young horse, in an effort to promote increased participation of younger equines. It sparked interest among breeders and riders. What is more important is the level and quality of the participating horses, which surpassed the expectations of the judges. The 4-year-old winner was Jornalero XVI from Yeguada El Yunque, ridden by David Vázquez. In the category for 5-year-olds, first place went to the only participant, Jota XXXI, owned by José Luis Tamarit Campuzano and ridden by Antonio Angulo. Ureo VII, owned by José Luis Montosa, bred by Francisco Santiago Ruiz and ridden by Alejandro Cadena placed first in the six-yearold category. This latter earned, by far, the best average among all three age groups, with a score of 143.800%. He performed brilliantly on the second day with an outstanding trot and in the length of stride and suspension of his paces. When it came to adult horses, the winners in the various categories were as follows: Fogoso XLVII won at medium level. This horse is owned by Yolanda Jordán, bred by Hnos. Fernando Baones and ridden by Francisco Javier Titos; and was the only participant in this category, his average was 100.418%. In the advanced category the horse and rider with the best score and therefore the winner, was Porteño XXII owned by José Luis Montosa, bred by Francisco Santiago Ruiz and ridden by Alejandro Cadenas. Their average was 133.470%. Their performance was outstanding and to the extent that they earned the highest score among adult horses, even surpassing the score of the first place in the Superior category. With a freestyle choreography, this last category, for horses of at least seven years of age, was accompanied by music. Aljarafe VII, owned by los Alburejos and ridden by Francisco Javier Ruiz Garrido took home the gold with a 132.655% average. Every year, this event summons more and more quality participants, thus making it an equestrian discipline that creates growing interest among Purebred Spanish Horse enthusiasts. Once again, the ANCCE Cup for Spanish High School enjoyed major success and participation. Congratulations to you all! ¡¡

SICAB was once again on hand for its appointment with Doma Vaquera. Faithful to the ANCCE Cup, two categories were established. Once for novice horses, with an exercise sheet for test n°1 and the other for experienced horses, who had to perform test n°2. Both categories were held at the weekend. We were fortunate to enjoy wonderful riders who proved that the PRE has a place in Doma Vaquera; if this discipline needs specifics, it is a horse with heart. That is one thing that a PRE has plenty of! First of all, the arena was for the novice riders. This round presented horses that are still learning the ins and outs of doma vaquera. During the test, these horses show the basics for this discipline; they perform various transitions from one pace to another on both reins. With this, their willingness and skill are observed, as not only must they show physical and mental willingness, but also their possibilities of becoming future champions. Seven horses and riders competed in this category. On the final roster, first place went to Guapo JFR, from Ganadería Juan Francisco Rosa Marrero and ridden by Juan Antonio Tovar Valle. This rider really “showed country style” to earn a 397.167% average. During his test, his horse’s vaquero paces took us to any of the many cold, foggy mornings in the hillsides of Huelva where the sweet perfume of cistus and rosemary prevail. Second place went to Embrujado JFR, owned by Fuente del Álamo, and bred by Juan Francisco Rosa Marrero. Ridden by Antonio Amuedo López, they scored an average of 396.167%, thanks to a perfect presentation. Their elegance, elasticity and precise movements were outstanding, with a performance typically seen in higher levels. Third place, with a 380.500% average was for the rider Juan Fernando Holgado Estrada and his horse Zoom, bred by Yeguada Pedro Pons and owned by Alejandro Roig Montesa. This rider is a constant in the Spanish National Championship competition arenas. With his participation, he seeks to stress the fact that there are PRE that are very well adapted for this discipline. When it came to the level for experienced horses—one that demands that the participants perform extremely difficult exercises—there were six participants that were the delight of the audience. They showed how the Purebred Spanish Horse has added to the impressiveness of Doma Vaquera to prove their versatility and functionality. They were a reminder that two PRE mares were Champions of Spain: Aladea and Centenaria.

Hortelano LXXV from Ganadería Juan Francisco Rosa Marrero was the winner; he was ridden by Pedro Urbina Ponce, with whom he earned an average of 516.500%. Pedro is a wonderful rider, with extensive experience in this competition. It is not surprising that he has won on several occasions and a clear commitment for the Purebred Spanish Horse, as he has competed with Guapo in Vaquera arenas with excellent results. Second place went to Xacobo III, owned by Ganadería Pérez Bardallo, bred by Yasmina Moreno and ridden by Juan Antonio Pérez Cruz with 515.667%. This horse and rider are outstanding for the brave and daring way they began the second day; they gave it all. Pérez Cruz demanded everything from his horse, to the enjoyment of viewers. Eneas V owned by Alfredo Lisaña, bred by Marcelino Gonzalez Alfaro and ridden by Oscar Bastos Vargas placed third with a 480.333% average. Despite the circumstances, this horse showed the confidence he has in his rider and his high level of training. ¡¡

ANccE cup for carriage Driving

On the last three days of SICAB, the Carriage Driving Competition was held with the participation of twenty some stud farms in the various categories. Some of the best athletes in this discipline competed for the honors. Joaquín Rodríguez, Juan José Romero and José Barranco were the champions of the SICAB 2015 ANCCE Cup for Carriage Driving. SInGlES First place was a neck and neck between the whips, stud farm owner Joaquín Rodríguez, with his 115.36 points, Manuel Úbeda, from Yeguada Ávila Castellanos in Valencia with 118.42 points and Carlos Sanjuán from Yeguada Paco Ballester who concluded with 120.74 points. The audience quavered on the last day with such tight scores among the contestants. In the end, Spain’s current champion in Singles, Joaquín Rodríguez, won all. In the cones test, he performed a perfect round, with no knock downs, and within the established time limit. He showed great skill with nerves of steel. PAIRS Once again, Juan José Romero, carriage driver from Yeguada El Diábolo, was proclaimed the absolute winner in this category with 105.93. This year has been one of the very best for this stud farm from Sevilla. On the podium, he was accompanied by Francisco Ballester, owner of the stud farm carrying his name, with 107.60 points. The big surprise was from Manuel González driving for Yeguada Miguel Ángel Félix Díaz. He earned 125.64 points after a bit of initial misfortune to then pick up speed and earn a place on the winners’ platform. 4-In-HAnd Whip, José Barranco from Cordoba, and owner of the stud farm, was, once again, the winner of the ANCCE Cup for Carriage Driving, with 125.28 points. He performed an expert marathon and showed his driving skills to force the final difference. Right from the beginning, he made it far from easy for the young whip from Catalonia, Llibert Calvet of Yeguada Andic, who premiered in this discipline. He earned 129.88 points showing his worth in two of the rounds, specifically dressage and cones. Ignacio Pallarés, from Yeguada Moya Almendral, with 147.03 points placed third in the general tally, after moving up from fifth place on the general roster. Carriage Driving shared in the SICAB 25th anniversary celebration. This edition concluded with the highest number yet of participating stud farms, in addition to the excellent driving skills shown by the whips and the Purebred Spanish Horse that are catching the attention of more than one in Spain. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Show Jumping

The ANCCE Cup for Show Jumping concluded with a victory for Purebred Spanish Horse Odalisco III. This seven-year-old gray was sired by Bandolero LXVII, out of Odalisca IV; he is owned by Yeguada de La Cartuja-Hierro del Bocado and ridden by Carlos Díaz Fernández from Cadiz. Held on the 17th and 18th of November in Pavilion 3 at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos (fair grounds) in Sevilla, Show Jumping was included on the SICAB 2015 competition program. There were a record number of participating Purebred Spanish Horses, with twenty in the event for adults and nine in the competition for juniors. In recent years, Show Jumping has been growing in prominence among riders, breeders and enthusiasts thanks to the beauty of the competition and the artistic nature of the exercises and the playoffs. In the category for adults, in keeping with ANCCE Cup Rules & Regulations and to establish the 2015 winner, two first-round competitions were held. After these results were obtained, there was a jump-off between four participants, of which Odalisco III was the winner. This and the other three horses were the only participants to perform with two clear rounds. These included Hilo IV, owned by María de las Nieves Hernández and bred by Yeguada el Yerro, who came second in the final; Ícaro de SYV, owned by Becgar and bred by Sierra y Valle, third, and with Mayoral XXXIII de Francisca Do Santos, bred by Yeguada El Diábolo being fourth. Odalisco, a horse that is extremely successful in Evening, jumped the track with no mistakes and passed the finish post with a time of 23.07 seconds on the stopwatch, thus becoming the winner. The career of this horse and rider throughout the season has been impressive. Throughout 2015, they have stood on the podium at a number of regional and national competitions. They almost won an International Eventing Competition in France, only to see it slip away at the very last moment. Prior to SICAB, they were the all-out winners at the Spanish National Championship in the category for Adults, and at SICAB, they concluded victoriously in the ANCCE Cup for Show Jumping. Simultaneously, the competition for juniors was held—reserved for U12 and U14 riders. The winner was Patricia Alonso del Pozo riding Jairo VIII, owned by Monrové Varilla and bred by Yeguada El Yunque. They concluded the round in 60.99 seconds. ¡¡

With double the number of participating horses, and with Doma Vaquera, Spanish High School and Carriage Driving in the spotlight, the Exhibition Competition congregated 21 Purebred Spanish Horses in the arena of Pavilion 2. The various performances captivated both enthusiasts and judges with free-style rounds that combined tradition, innovation and the purest dressage of the Spanish Horse. The Champions were the Domínguez siblings with their horses Nostálgico XII, Maestro XV and Querello; they performed with garrocha poles and horses at liberty. On the first day, they retained an average of 6.5 points, but the turning point was the second day, when they tallied 14.5 points, which was only one tenth above the reserve winner. This second place went to a driving turnout owned by Miguel Ángel Cárdenas, who offered an impressive performance with a 5-in-hand. This year, ANCCE innovated by including a Sidesaddle Exhibition Completion. There was also a Concours d’Elegance (traditional carriages); undoubtedly, the star attraction was the Breeder Presentation Competition. When it came to sidesaddle riders, seven ladies/horses entered the arena to offer Vaquera, Dressage or Spanish High School performances. The winner was Milagros Calderón Rodríguez riding Búho III, owned by Luis Calderón and bred by Monte San Lorenzo. They averaged 266 points. The 1st Concours d’Elegance Competition included a parade around the SICAB facilities. It also included a dressage section and a Presentation section before international judges. There were nine carriages, all classics that were restored prior to 1945, and one modern replica. They were driven by their owners or paid whips. First place went to Antonio Miguel Repullo Anaya in a single, Gregorio Aranda driving a team and a tandem, Miguel Ángel de Cárdenas Osuna with a 4-in-hand and Salvador Martínez Mellado in a Coach. Finally, in an effort to promote brotherhood among breeders during SICAB, ANCCE initiated the 1st Breeder Presentation Competition, which was extremely successful. The participants presented their horses, worthy of the very best presenters and Dressage riders; they gave it their all, while counting on the viewers in the stands to create expectation and an enjoyable and relaxed environment. During the ridden test, lady rider Ulrike Belhoussine, from Ganadería Piramid riding Corinto Mater, and Ignacio Candau, from Yeguada Candau riding Napoleón, both sought awards. The judges considered that this latter performed the best test. Ten breeders competed in the in-hand presentation contest. They included Miguel Moreno from Yeguada del Odiel, José María Anguas Medina from Yeguada Anguas Medina, Juan Ángel López Rosado from Yeguada López Rosado, Juan Ramón Bernal from Yeguada Los Algarves, Luis Castel from Yeguada Yaco, Javier Albiñana from Yeguada Ermita San Bernando, Désirée Lang from Yeguada Las Querencias, Juan Carlos Sánchez Noriega from Ganadería Sánchez-Noriega, Philip Belhoussine from Yeguada Piramid and Juan Carlos Novales from Yeguada María Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera. Since 1992, the Equestrian Show has been one of SICAB’s flagships. Right from the very beginning, the Show has been a key aspect of the Trade Fair as a single-breed event in which the Purebred Spanish Horse is in the spotlight, to make it a must on the calendar of equine enthusiasts. Taking place in the majestic exhibition arena that seats 6,000 people, the Show triggers emotions, excitement and enthusiasm from the audience thanks to the quality of the equestrian performances.

Under the watchful eye of Director Antonio Moya, This is Our Horse told a fictional story based on the history of a sire stallion who was born 25 years ago, and who in 1997 was triumphant at SICAB by earning the title as PRE Stallion Champion of Spain. Once again, SICAB brought the most important national and international stars together under one roof to garner the praise of both the general public and the critics. This year’s show has been described as one of the best in recent years. The music, the commentary, the images, the special effects and the setting all intermingled to show the world the beauty, nobility, versatility and potential of the Purebred Spanish Horse. It was all possible with traditional performances using cobras from the Military Stud Farm, Dressage at the hand of Olympic rider José Antonio García Mena, Spanish High School with the mastery of the prestigious Rafael Soto and José María Sánchez Cobos from the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, traditional and competition Carriage Driving and Jesus Morales with his garrocha pole. In addition to all of this, there were special numbers dedicated to the popular celebrations found in Spain with lady and gentlemen riders from Andalusia and Menorca, as well as Roman Quadrigas represented by the White and the Blue teams. Truly spectacular numbers by international stars were offered, including French rider Clémence Faivre and the riders of Hasta Luego.
