Tirado Agudo

An Enriching Experience in my hometown, there is a saying that states: “may your visits be long and your farewells short.” Today, it is time for me to say farewell, and with all the sadness involved. I am sad because over that past four years—which have seemingly flown by—I have grown fond and attached to both people and institutions. Although I know they will always be there, now, as I look back, I will be moving away from the daily chores that have occupied an important part of my life for the past 47 months. AFTER THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, which has once again proven to be an example of Association growth and experience, I have reviewed my time as an ANCCE leader a thousand times. A sure fact is that I feel proud to have presided over Spain’s most important breeder association; and I state this with full background knowledge after presiding over other associations. it is NEITHER the time nor the place to point out the achievements made during this period. I am convinced that time will provide an accurate image of my time at ANCCE. What I do hope is that as time goes by, ANCCE and its members are able to feel half the appreciation that I do today, both as an association as well as members. these have been years of intense learning, especially when it comes to facing criticism, which in some cases correct and constructive, while at other times absurd and offensive to trespass the limits of established ethics. I have also learned that success is plural; it is never attributable to the actions of a single person, but rather, it is the work of a team, even when the hugs and best wishes go to the person holding the post as President. for someone like me, who has been a businessman their entire life, I can assure you that this point in time has been a very enriching experiencing. A post like this helps you absorb the impact, remain discretely silent at times of tension, keep a cold head in situations of uneasiness and understand that ANCCE, although a non-profit organization, works like a business, like an excellent business, but one that does not work for collective gain or personal profit. over the past years, if i have offended any breeder or if I have made a gross blunder, I request your forgiveness before I leave. It has never been my intention to hurt anyone, as I have always sought to favor breeders as a group. I would like to take advantage of this opportunity to thank everyone who has always been there to lend me a helping hand, whether managers, employees or breeders. Without having a post of responsibility, you have all worked to make ANCCE a more useful, practical and a service-oriented association for our members. today, i go back to being a foot soldier; I will have more time to spend with my horses, participate in competitions and I will be seeing you at the many events organized by our Association. That is where you will find me; remember me as a simple breeder of PRE Horses, who, for several months, dedicated his time to making ANCCE more profitable, closer at hand, and why not say it, more humane. an affectionate hug goes to each and every one of you with my deepest appreciation.

JOSÉ JUAN MORALES New President of ANCCE Last May 26th, José Juan Morales Fernández (Sevilla, 56 years of age) was elected as the new president of ANCCE. he is a purebred spanish horse breeder since 2001 and over the past twelve years, he has been a member of various association governing bodies. currently, he combines his executive work with the vice-presidency of the Royal Andalusian Carriage Club. interview What values will you defend during your new presidency? Honesty and loyalty above all else. We believe there is a lot to be done; we need to do things right and report about it even better, but this is nothing if we fail to recuperate the good environment that has presided over our Association in past decades.

y 10

Based on your own experience, what aspects do you believe need greatest attention and where will be focus be? Sincerely, we believe that from ANCCE, we must establish a few, but very ambitious objectives. Remember that for years, our main objective was to have the PRE Stud Book, and with that in mind, we invested vast amounts of time and money. That milestone was reached and today, the PRE Stud Book is a management model for others. The time has come when we must change our mind-set; we need to re-boot ANCCE. In Spain, all major business organizations have ended up becoming some kind of product quality certification body and in part, that is what we want to achieve with ANCCE. We must certify the quality of our products by being the most demanding when it comes to breeding; we must certify training levels and degrees for the benefit and increase of employment opportunities, as this is one of the sector’s most important shortcomings. We must certify the quality of exports… There are many exciting challenges and we need to face them right from the start.

You were already a member of the previous ANCCE governing body, but now, as its President, how do you see this new era? In all truth, I’m quite excited, anxious to start working and fully satisfied by the backing provided by a group of collaborators, who will undoubtedly help us in the huge task of making ANCCE even greater, and above all else, more productive for its members.

What specific objectives have you established for the next four years? As already pointed out, might I mention that we want to revamp competitions completely. We cannot leave things in the current state; we need a drastic change that begins with honesty and mutual respect for all parties involved and who are active players at competitions. It is not a matter of guilty parties or victims; here, the damage is, in general, detrimental for the image of the sector.

interview Regarding Conformation Competitions: So you are planning changes to improve the system? Yes, but it is a topic that first needs to be discussed in depth with my team. If a system does not work, you need not patch it up; all you have to do is change it, even at the risk of many people not liking it. We do not want to perpetrate a mistake as the hallmark of my term in office. Undoubtedly, recent years have seen the advance of the Purebred Spanish Horse. Where is the PRE at this point in time? That is the only asset we really have; Purebred Spanish Horses are bred better, their quality is higher, but we must we must take steps for our breed to be coveted by everyone. We are not happy with the cliché of beauty, noble spirit and heart. That does not mean that this is not true, but we have to enhance our horses and for that, an image is better than a thousand words. We want to see more horses in as many competition arenas as possible; we want horse enthusiasts to long for a PRE; we want—and the sector needs it—to reach the end consumer.

“we want to see more horses in as many competition arenas as possible; we want horse ENTHUSIASTS to long for a PRE; we want—and the sector needs it—to reach the end consumer” 12

Purebred Spanish Horses are found in more and more countries. In terms of international relationships, do you have new proposals to improve the promotion of PRE Horses? The best proposal is to be responsible, breed quality and advise breeders in all possible aspects, because a good horse practically sells itself. That is something we all know. So, the goal is clear and that is to increase exponentially the average quality of the breed. We believe that first of all, we need to drink in the fountains of experience and accept the guidance of true international specialists. At the end of the day, we have to put an end to the elevated degree of endogamy in our world; that leads us to say that we have the best breed in the world, that we know the most about the topic, and that we have no need for outside advice, because we breed the best horses in the world.

interview reality. SICAB has been around for 28 years; there are very few trade fairs, whatever the sector, that are as long-lived and that have been held continuously for so many years. It is the only event where live animals are the main protagonists; it is promoted and sustained by private business. SICAB, by definition, is a world-class showcase for Spanish Horses, and its annual investment surpasses a million euros. Note that I have used the word investment, because that is how we see it; it is not an expense, but rather, a major promotional investment made by ANCCE. It is essential that aspects be modified, we need to tidy up the packaging, make it more attractive; unfortunately, horses do what they know how to do and nothing more. We have to make the additional effort to show their skills with the best backdrop. This year, we want to innovate; we want to double the number of breeder stands in the light of the demand; we want a new structural image; we want to make the competitions more agile so that breeders interact more. Building something is always easier than destruction; criticizing is always easier than cooperation. Honestly, and considering the crisis that we have suffered for the past ten years, I can only express my appreciation for the huge efforts made by everyone before me who took on the task of saving SICAB, which is the authentic figurehead of the Purebred Spanish Horse.

In recent years, you have enjoyed SICAB as a breeder and as a member of the Board of Directors. Now you will experience it as the President. What does SICAB mean to you? Would you propose improvements? Just like everything in life, SICAB is susceptible to improvement— there is no doubt about that. In the light of criticism, we must accept a 14

To conclude, as the new President of ANCCE, would you like to share a message for members? I would request loyalty towards ANCCE and a positive spirit. Decision makers can make mistakes and we consider that decisions have to be made and important ones at that. We all know the saying “if you want to change something, stop doing things the same old way.” We are going to seek the common good; we want a more dynamic ANCCE and to attain it, we must be open to anything that contributes something productive to the sector. ¡¡

the Freestyle: Perfect Symbiosis of Horse, Rider & Music

Throughout contemporary history, the development of music has been most surprising. Music has, and always will be, a reflection of memories. Music has been used to depict great historical feats, epic battles, times of prosperity, as well as eras of beauty and magnificence. When it comes to equestrian disciplines, specifically the equestrian ballet of dressage, many people are unaware of the origins of the great equestrian showpiece: the Freestyle. The Dressage World Cup is closely related with the history of the Kür Grand Prix. text: Lily Forado

if we go back to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Dutch visionary, Joep Bartels, was on hand at the awards ceremony when the German rider, Reiner Klimke, on Ahlerich, performed some one-time changes in time to the Olympic Anthem and in such a way that each stride fit perfectly with the tempo of the music. It was that unique moment when the mind of Joep Bartel was illuminated; he decided to create a new test format for Dressage. In Holland a year later, specifically at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the first World Cup competition included this musical test. In other words, it could be said that the 1985 World Cup in ‘s-Hertogenbosch put the Freestyle on the map. This wonderful initiative by Dutchman Joep Bartels denoted a turning point in the history of this equestrian discipline. This quote by Joep Bartels appeared in the 2016 November issue of The Horse Magazine: “I was inspired by the Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles when Reiner Klimke did his lap of honor with the reins in one hand, doing one-time changes which were perfectly synchronized with the Olympic Anthem. I saw the emotional reaction of the crowds and that inspired me. When I returned to Europe, I met with a sponsor, Nashua, and the following year, in 1985, I launched it in the World Cup series. I was almost killed by the press; they said that I had destroyed Dressage. There were also many riders who were not very keen, but Gabriela Grillo, a German rider, supported me through it all. It was in ‘s-Hertogenbosch that it really took off. It was a fantastic atmosphere.” In Dressage, it is impressive to watch and feel how the melodies and tones adapt perfectly to the

horses’ strides. To perform a good Kür, the music has to be chosen with great care; movements are carried out in keeping with the rhythm of the melody. In other words, horse and rider have to become one to hypnotize the audience with the music. A great Freestyle captivates spectators; it takes their breath away; it evokes emotions that make their hair stand on end in such a way that when the movement performed by horse and rider harmonize as one. Over the years, Freestyle has helped make Dressage a much more attractive sport; it is a highly emotional test and the only discipline that guarantees a full house. As Joep Bartels rightly commented, Freestyle

has to tell a story: “Riders must present something, whether their horse or their country; it has to tell a story.” There have been many glorious occasions throughout the history of the Freestyle. PRE horses Evento, Invasor, Fuego de Cárdenas and, recently, Grandioso, all played a key role with their Spanish melodies. There are always specific examples that are engraved on our minds, and these were a few of those renowned horses. Evento opened the doors to a dream that crossed international borders. His excellent performance at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games brought the PRE to the world’s notice. At the hand of Ignacio Rambla, this

son of Leviton was outstanding at the most important sporting event in the world. That was the first Olympic Games to incorporate the musical test. In previous years, several German Dressage experts expressed their opposition; they saw it as the end of Dressage. Nevertheless, Ignacio Rambla danced with Evento to the sound of a guitar. The audience was astonished, not only by their incredible Piaffe-Passage transitions, but, above all, by their spectacular entrance in one-time changes. They ended up taking a well-deserved eleventh place. Their performance was a taste of the great yet-to-come moments. Once again, Purebred Spanish Horses expanded its

horizons and became a part of the international elite. Invasor, son of Panadero VII, was one of the most important PRE horses, in terms of Dressage, during the 1990s and at the onset of the 21st century. In the hands of the great rider, Rafael Soto, this pair entered an endless number of international arenas to display their art. The 2002 WEG in Jerez was a major leap forward in terms of continuity, consideration and the promotion of the PRE at world level. The Spanish team included Beatriz Ferrer Salat riding Beauvalais, Juan Antonio JimĂŠnez riding Guizo, Ignacio Rambla on Granadero (PRE) and Rafael Soto with Invasor (PRE). It 22

was in Jerez, the cradle of equestrian art and the city of PRE horses, where the international riders danced to the sound of the music and the Spanish team came away with the team Bronze. That was a turning point for Dressage in Spain. It took place at the right time, in the right place: in Jerez. Rafael and Invasor performed a majestic test that became the precursor of another quintessential event: the Athens Olympic Games two years later. If Athens is remembered for anything, in addition to its historic and artistic riches, it is for being the home of the first Olympic Games. In 2004, Athens hosted the summer Olympic Games where Spain gained

a privileged place on the podium by winning a Silver Medal. Once the team and individual tests concluded, the music began. Ignacio Rambla, riding the PRE Oleaje, continued in the footsteps of Evento. Later came the turn of Rafael Soto and Invasor, a pair who, to the sound of Spanish music by Michael Erdmann, established their legacy with one of their best-ever tests. Following a superb entrance in Passage, the movements flowed perfectly with the music. Rafael Soto performed one exercise after another with great precision; the combination of movements to the music was impressive. The complexity of the canter exercises was incredible; they

performed a 20-meter half circle in extended canter doing one-time changed, followed by a pirouette in Piaffe. On completing the test, Rafael Soto doffed his hat in delight (hat in hand) and launched an art that was worthy of record. The equation of the Freestyle combines the know-how of the rider with the elegance, beauty, strength and character of his horse. But in this combination, the key factor lies in the music. The melody is created by music professionals: composers. One of these is the celebrated composer Michael Erdmann, who has worked, and still does, with top international riders like Isabell Werth, the current World number one. The Freestyle music by Michael Erdmann has always been a highly emotional experience. His multiple creations include music for some of Spain’s most famous Freestyle riders, including Invasor ridden by Rafael Soto, Beatriz Ferrer Salat with Beauvalais and Juan Manuel Muñoz with Fuego de Cárdenas. The Freestyle creation process comes from the collaboration with rider, horse and composer. Regarding this equation, Michael Erdmann explains in more detail how the process works: “Usually, the entire design and selection of musical themes is left up to me. Some riders have their own ideas about the music they would like to ride to. However, there is often a problem with the rider’s own perception. The rider often misinterprets the beat of the music and the rhythm of the horse. Riders like Isabell Werth have practically been giving me free rein for 24 years, and have implemented our productions in a sensational way. It is not for nothing that she often 23

scores 10 for Music & Interpretation.” When it comes to producing the composition, there are several elements that enter into play, as is well those described by Michael: “In my view, freestyle is a high-quality art form! The basis for this, of course, is the perfect technical implementation. This is supplemented by the horse and rider bringing the music alive through the horse’s movements, the dynamism of the choreography and the start and end of the sections. If this goes well, this whole package will please the public and judges alike.” One of the historic Kürs of the first decade of the 21st Century was that

of Juan Manuel Muñoz with Fuego de Cárdenas at the 2010 Kentucky WEG. Under an electric atmosphere, a sepulchral silence and the multitude of people who had come to watch the musical tests, Juan Manuel Muñoz took to the center line with the impressive Fuego de Cárdenas, as the final representative of the Spanish delegation. To the chords of very Spanish music, specifically, flamenco style, the pair danced to the rhythm of the snapping castanets and Spanish guitars. Every lover of equestrian ballet has viewed this test an infinite number of times. Every stride of Fuego de Cárdenas transported the Kentucky audience, which did not hesitate in their excitement. Whistles and shouts of triumph accompanied the Andalusian rider in each movement. The entire section involving Passage and Piaffe was exquisite, but the great finale of the night, and even of the competition, the great highlight, as the Americans would say, was when Juan Manuel Muñoz took to the center line in canter, performing onetime changes with only one hand on the reins. That exercise so delighted the spectators that it applause, shouts and ovations were launched towards the Spanish rider. Along the same lines, as the grand finale, Juan Manuel Muñoz undertook an extended canter, followed by a pirouette in Piaffe, a typical Spanish exercise which caused the public to explode with delight, in a memorable cacophony of shouts and applause. Juan Manuel Muñoz, riding Fuego de Cárdenas, was at the top of his form, captivating the hearts of the 25,000 people congregated there, converting themselves into the favorites of the night. Scoring an impressive 81.450, they took fifth place. When Juan Manuel saluted the judges and the crowds, there was an unmistakably electrical change of energy throughout the stadium. The next to compete was Edward Gal with the great Totilas in their final competition together. Michael Erdmann was the composer of the music ridden to

by Juan Manuel Muñoz and Fuego de Cárdenas. For him, the Kentucky competition was highly emotional: “I love PREs and Lusitanos—we even have some ourselves. In principle, there is no difference in production method. But they inspire me in a particular way. For Invasor, the overall image of the rider and horse (first Ignacio Rambla and then Rafael Soto, especially) inspired me. Rafael as the showman and the special Spanish horses needed a symbiosis of rhythm, tradition and beautiful melodies. Fuego and rider Juan Manuel Munoz inspired me to write my own composition. The spectacular movements of Fuego resulted in a composition combining tradition with very modern rhythm.

The Kür performed by Juan Manuel Muñoz riding Fuego de Cárdenas captivated the hearts and souls of the 25,000 people congregated there to make it one of the favorites at the Kentucky WEG 26

Fuego XII ridden by José Manuel Muñoz at the WEG Final in Kentucky.

In the gallop section, the overall image of horse and rider inspired me to create my own arrangement (from 3/4 to 4/4 time) of the beautiful film theme from Max Steiner’s “Theme from a Summerplace”. The implementation of the freestyle and the overall image of horse and rider brought the audience at the World Championships in Kentucky to unprecedented levels of enthusiasm - even during the assessment. It was incredibly emotional.” Dressage, the quintessential equestrian ballet, will always be one of the most complex sports due to its technical complexity. The musical test makes this thrilling and complex sport more accessible to the public. Freestyle music is not mere back-ground music; it is has been synchronized to the tempo of the horse’s strides. Every change of pace has to be in perfect time with the horse. As Cees Slings—one of the great music composers ever—stated so well, “Freestyle is the pinnacle of Dressage and when it works, the result is magic.” ¡¡

PRE horses spark the interest of equestrian enthusiasts in China 28

The grandeur and heroism that horses transmit knows no borders. Its strength and loyalty have fill pages and pages of mythology and literature. Chinese history is full of personalities who were depicted next to their war horses, which were known for their loyalty, courage and ability to overcome challenges. These faithful steeds accompanied military chiefs, kings and even emperors to make them heroes through magnificent achievements. Despite being an important part of their history, Chinese equestrian enthusiasm is practically inexistent when compared to other nations. Indeed, there are a number of recently established riding clubs; slowly but surely, interest in horses is increasing. It is within this framework that the Purebred Spanish Horse seeks to find a place at the hand of Andequus since the PRE that boasts all of the beauty and nobility that the breed has to offer and is capable of captivating the hearts of people the world over, including the Chinese. Since 2016, the influence in an emerging country—but one that differs greatly with others—has become an important challenge for the Andalusian firm Andequus. With extensive experience in the export of live animals and excellent ties with Asian markets, a group of professionals is in charge of positioning the Purebred Spanish Horse in Chinese society. In February, ANCCE signed a collaboration agreement with the firm, as one of ANCEE’s main premises is to promote the Spanish horse worldwide. Furthermore, China represents an important potential market for Association members, personnel and managers, who have travelled to equestrian fairs in recent years to meet authorities and entrepreneurs in the sector. PRE HORSES IN China Currently, the Purebred Spanish Horse is used, for the most part, in show business as it is the star at major exhibitions. Its versatility,

elegant movements and enviable physical traits are key elements to portray its beauty in a majestic context. Although a showcase, it works to spark interest in learning more about the breed and establish a more direct connection away from the headlights and music. In this regard, Andequus handles aspects such as exports, sales, promotions and the development of the PRE as a breed. Likewise, it’s in charge of launching horseback riding since PRE horses are known to be a docile and noble breed that is able to quickly achieve harmony and mutual understanding with the rider. Both young and older riders synchronize easily with these horses, thus allowing them to enjoy horseback riding with no need of extensive experience.

The Purebred Spanish Horse has adapted perfectly to China. Intermediate and upperintermediate level equestrian centers are very well conditioned and the passion of those who have the opportunity to know the PRE makes them a much loved and desired animal. Their beauty is captivating in all senses of the word. Their long manes, size, conformation and ability to fully concentrate are elements that have charmed everyone. Andequus representation in China relies upon José Luis Muñoz and Manuel Ángel Caro. Both assure that the PRE generates a “healthy disbelief when they see them performing Dressage, since they think that only Central European horses are able to do so.” Muñoz insists on “representatives of other breeds in Europe have carried out insistent marketing campaigns which have allowed them to obtain solid footing in the country; that is why the PRE is in a disadvantaged position.” However, “[the PRE] counts on what is of utmost importance: traits. Little by little a gap is emerging in society and the demand continues to increase,” his business partner explains.

China is a market with outstanding potential for ANCCE members, staff and managers, who have all traveled to equestrian trade show in recent years to contact sector-related authorities and entrepreneurs

a yet to be awakened enthusiasm The main barrier for riding is that it is considered for the “elite.” This is something that occurs in all countries and even more in China. Equestrian facilities have increased throughout the country and there are a growing number of people who can afford the sport. Actually, the problem lays in the concept: the biggest difference between China and Western countries is the way sports are structured. Even though there are large clubs with 200 or 300 horses, in many cases equitation is a part-time hobby and children only train once a week or even once a month. For this reason, it is important to incorporate daily training to have direct repercussion on the enthusiasts of other disciplines. 31

Jumping enjoys an advantage over Dressage. More Chinese are involved in show jumping and view competition as a hobby while Dressage seen as a discipline for enjoyment and relaxation. Andequus works in a recently built equestrian center in Shanghai, where intermediate level competitions are held. With 500 members, there are 200 boxes, exterior arenas, stables, paddocks, walkers, quarantine stables, restaurant, hotel ... “It’s an extremely well-organized facility where animal care is excellent,” explain Chinese Andequus authorities. More than fifty employees work there and the professionals dedicated to the equestrian world are trained by veterinarians, blacksmiths, physiotherapists, experts in equine nutrition… These professionals also provide services to other equestrian centers in Beijing and the demand for labor is continuous, especially when it comes to riders. It is interesting to note that mixing is increasing with the teams being made up of both Chinese and Spaniards. In the case of Andequus, José Luis and Manuel Ángel are backed by veterinarian 32

The beauty of the Purebred Spanish Horse conquers the feelings of anyone who has the opportunity to learn about the breed.

Antonio Andrades, riders-trainers María Boquera and Gabriel Martinez with international relations being undertaken by Qian-Lei and Qian Hai-Dong. The increase in enthusiasts is linked to the interest in learning trades related to the equestrian world. Therefore, it is more frequent to see locals working at riding clubs showing interest in Purebred Spanish Horses. Thanks to the warm welcome Andequus has received in China, it can be stated that the PRE is slowly settling in. It is still too early to talk about PRE breeding there. However, it is true that interest in enjoying horses increases daily, and not only in terms of spectators but also those who enjoy riding a beautiful and obedient horse. As Machado once said, “Traveler, there is no path, make your own path as you walk” and that is the current situation of the PRE in China: The breed is travelling a solid but complex path to create a culture linked to the equestrian world that has yet to discover the perfect pairing between humankind and Purebred Spanish Horses. The challenge is as difficult as it is exciting. ¡¡

Jürgen Koschel was appointed by ANCCE as the PRE Coach for the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses, which will be held in the town of Ermelo (Holland) from the 2nd to the 5th of August. As a trainer and coach, he has worked with many national teams, including Finland (1982– 1989), Spain (1994–1996), Holland (1997–2001) and Switzerland (2002– 2007). As of 2007, he worked for the German Equestrian Olympic Committee; since 2010, he has trained young German horses/ riders in their transition into adult categories (U25). What ties do you have with the Purebred Spanish Horse? Back in 1995, I received an offer from Spain’s Equestrian Federation to train the national team to qualify, for the first time, for the Olympic Games in Atlanta. In the strict selection that was carried, PRE horses Invasor, Flamenco and Evento were included. Their willingness and extraordinary talent when performing piaffe and passage fascinated me from the very start. Since the Spanish team prepared the Olympic Games at my facilities in Hamburg, I was able to ride those horses several times; on counted occasion am I able to state that I have never ridden horses that are as sensitive and intelligent as these are. You were the first to select a PRE for the Olympics. What natural aptitudes did you see in Invasor to have him represent Spain at Atlanta ‘96? Invasor is one of the few horses to participate in three Olympic Games: Atlanta, Sidney and Athens. For a PRE, he was very large and had an extraordinary canter, and an excellent walk. His heart and dedication were unlimited. Moreover, he was an early bloomer who began competing in his first Spanish National Championship at the age of six 6. When Rafael Soto

36

took the reins, a unique, world-class combination was born. The second horse to deeply impress me was Evento, ridden by Ignacio Rambla. What was your reaction when appointed as the national trainer for the PRE Team going to the 2018 World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses? It was a great honor for me to select the horses that will be participating in the World Championships. My appointment as trainer confirms the idealness of PRE Horses participating in these international Championships. In my opinion, breeders have carried a praiseworthy task by breeding these horses to participate in the competitions. When visiting Spanish breeders, including Álvaro Domecq and the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez de la Frontera, I have verified that horse breeding in Spain is enjoying a sweet moment.

when visiting spanish breeders, i have verified that horse breeding in Spain is enjoying a sweet moment What aspects motivate you most when it comes to working with PRE Horses as a trainer for such an important Championship as is the case of Ermelo 2018? First of all, there are my close and long-standing ties with the PRE world of horses. Secondly, it is the fast-paced development of these horses in the world of competitive sports. In fact, at the international level, more and more riders seek out good-quality PREs to train for sports. As the trainer, what objectives have you established to select PRE Horses for Ermelo 2018?

interview

One of the main criteria to participate at the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo is to have a beautiful horse with a good structure that dominates the three main steps. Also, the horse must have received the corresponding training depending on its age and have a high degree of manageability, dedication and willingness to work. All of these qualities must harmonize with the rider who needs to adapt like a glove with the horse while at the same time leading the horse discretely. Also, there must be a perceivable willing spirit to perform a joint effort, both on behalf of the horse and the rider. Today, judges appreciate fair and balanced treatment of horses. They expect horses to be treated as natural as possible. In fact, when judging the performance of a horse, animal welfare resides in the thought of international judges and stewards. Based on your experience as a trainer and rider, what do you see as the key factors for success in international Dressage? It is imperative to have a very intelligent horse that has good movements and excellent training, both the horse and the rider. 38

the most appreciated virtues in PRE horses are their beauty, INTELLIGENCE and their great sensitivity and MANAGEABILITY

What is your opinion of the PRE Horse? What virtues are appreciated most? Their most appreciated virtues are their beauty, intelligence and in many cases, the wonderful sensitivity and manageability they show, both for sports and recreational activities. What advice would you give breeders and riders seeking to become a member of Spain’s PRE team? Enthusiasm towards Purebred Spanish Horses appeared at the 1996 Olympic Games. The fervor has been a major impulse for Dressage in Spain. This is so much the case that PRE horses are imitated when performing piaffe and passage. My advice is that this excellent level be maintained, and that perfection be continued through selective breeding and high-quality training!! ¥¥

How did you get started in the world of Purebred Spanish Horses? My grandfather was a horse breeder, and horses have been a natural environment for me since birth. But when I was 12 years old, my parents bought a house in Spain. While looking for summer activities, my brother and I found a stable close to our Spanish home. The owner of the stable gave us Spanish horses to ride in the countryside, and that was all it took to fall in love with this horse race. Then, when I was making my own money, I bought my first PRE horse, to teach my daughter to ride, since I felt PREs were the safest horses in the world.

How many PRE horses are there at your stud farm? Presently, I have eight PRE horses in my name, four living at my farm. Your best stallion/mare/foal is: This is a very challenging question to answer. But as they say, knowledge comes with experience. Therefore, every new stallion, mare, foal and colt is expected to be better that the previous one. My latest colt, Nevado Sun, is expected to be my top of the line stallion as far as character, functionality, health, beauty, and size are concerned. Nevertheless, my first black stallion, now 37 years of age and still going strong, continues to hold a very special place in my heart. 40

What are your priorities: sports, hacking, breeding, etc.? Ever since I met the first PRE horse in Spain, I made it my mission to provide information about PRE horses for Finnish people. I set up an association for that purpose in 2004, and all my horses work towards that mission, by participating in horse fairs, exhibitions and the Spanish riding clinics in Finland that I organize. I also provide opportunities for all interested horse lovers to test ride my horses at my farm or during our clinics. In addition, my family competes in dressage, show jumps and breeds, to enjoy my horses ourselves.

What does the future hold for PRE horses in your country? The future for PRE horses in Finland looks very promising. In october 2017, the official number of PRE horses in Finland was 128. It is growing slowly but surely. Keeping in mind, that Finland is a very remote country far in the North, with only 5 million inhabitants, for us that is a big number. My first PRE horse must have been the first PRE horse registered in Finland, since the Finnish authorities asked me: ‘What is a PRE?” when they saw the PRE passport. What do you like most about Purebred Spanish Horses? I like their docile and noble character the most, and no horse can compete with them in beauty and elegance. Also, my horses are seldom ill, so you can always count on them to perform well. They are very intelligent and social, and in freedom they seek your company. It is rewarding to interact with them on a daily basis; they make it so easy and joyful. They make ideal first horses, even for families with children. And yes, they have, indeed, been the safest horses in the world. ¡¡

ANCCE reports 46th General Assembly

José Juan Morales Fernández elected new ANCCE President The General Assembly announced that Mounted Bullfighter Ángel Peralta was posthumously named 2018 Honorary Member The Election Board for the 46th National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association General Assembly was held on May 26th in Sevilla. José Morales Fernández was elected as the new President and he will occupy this post until 2022. Morales, born in Sevilla 56 years ago, will lead the Board of Directors which includes 47 breeders. A variety of points on the agenda were covered, included the approval of the 2017 annual accounts, the 2018 budget and the agreements passed by the Board of Directors were ratified. In his report, outgoing President Juan Tirado underlined that after four years in the post, he “turns over an association that is economically healthy; a modern, close, useful ANCCE that is better structured and with 100 members more than it had in 2014.” Over the past four years, the governing body has worked to reinforce the image of ANCCE as the most important association in the equine sector, and a reference for others. It is a solid organization in which its maximum objective is to defend its members. Among the advances made are the communication systems, low-cost national sports tests, the presence of Purebred Spanish Horses at the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses, the updating of the Conformation-Functional Competition Rules, the launching of the new ANCCE Cup for Work Equitation and the initiative to count on our own molecular genetics lab to perform DNA testing on PRE Horses. Likewise, Tirado highlighted the impact of the promotional work carried out in favor of the Purebred Spanish Horse, with the full integration of ANCCE in Marca España: “This has allowed us to position the Purebred Spanish Horse as a brand both in Spain and abroad.” 44

José Juan Morales.

Throughout 2017, ANCCE held meetings with department heads at Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment (MAPAMA), essentially with the Directorate General for Breeding and Animal Health. ANCCE also attended a number of meetings with members of FEAGAS (Spanish Federation of Select Livestock Associations and ASAJA (Young Farmers’ Association); it

also participated in the annual FEACC (Spanish Federation of Horse Breeders’ Association Assembly, where ANCCE held the presidency. Regarding the PRE Stud Book, Tirado pointed out that “it is an international reference point; currently, it plays a determining role, provides administrative services to all associations thanks to the knowhow acquired over the past ten years

of flawless management on behalf of ANCCE, and has surpassed all annual quality audits.” Lastly, the outgoing president expressed his appreciation for the support provided over the past four years by breeders, the Board and ANCCE employees. He also wished the very best for the incoming governing body. José Juan Morales Fernández has been breeding Purebred Spanish Horses since 2001. Over the past 12 years, he has been an active member of the various ANCCE bodies; he is currently the Vice-President of the Royal Andalusian Carriage Club (RCEA). In his inaugural speech, the new President thanked members for their support and stated that he was ready and willing to work with the all: “all members, independently of their age, field of interest, professional activity… must form an integrated part of ANCCE. They need to feel that they are listened to and that their development as breeders is favored. I would therefore like to ask you all to contribute greatly with your presence, participation and collaboration so that among us all, we may solve the sector’s needs and achieve qualitative advances for our breed.” During the Assembly, members appointed Angel Peralta as 2018 Honorary Member. This mounted bullfighter and Purebred Spanish Horse breeder passed away on April 7th in the city of Sevilla, at the age of 93. ¡¡

ANCCE reports pre stud book

ANCCE registered almost 3000 new Purebred Spanish Horse breeders in 2017

In 2017, ANCCE, as the manager of the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book (known by many as LG PRE ANCCE) registered almost 3000 new breeders and more than 10,000 new PRE Horses. This translates into a 3.8% increase in the total herd census; thus, as of December 31st, there are 239,813 horses from 32,638 stud farms in 66 countries. Fifty percent of these new breeders were from Spain, while the other 50% were internationals from countries such as the Seychelles or Japan. In Spain, Andalusia has produced the highest number of new breeders, thus topping the PRE herd population ranking, followed by Catalonia, Castilla y LeĂłn and Extremadura. On the international scene, Germany and Italy have registered the highest number of new breeders in 2017. Regarding all other Stud Book services, there were 4,678 Revisions for Basic Aptitude as Breeding Stock, 9214 changes of ownership were processed (6370 from national owners and 2844 from internationals). Throughout 2017, the revision and assessment trips abroad took PRE Stud Book authorized veterinarians to twenty-three different countries, such as Chile, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Morocco, to mention a few. In the past few months, visits have been made to Argentina, the USA, New Zealand and Australia; this proves the good results of promotion carried in recent years in an effort to make the breed known universally. Likewise, ANCCE and PRE Stud Book representatives participate at Trade Fairs and congresses throughout the year to offer courses for breeders and enthusiasts. They also hold meeting with the authorized veterinarians and international associations that cooperate and collaborate with ANCCE to update information and 50

procedures as well as discuss new management procedures. In November of 2017, coinciding with SICAB, the annual training course for European collaborating associations was held. Last month, a course was held for American Association representatives. In March of this year, the PRE Stud Book office renewed its Quality Certification in keeping with UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 standards. This body certifies the correct and efficient implementation of a processing system with regards to the requirements specified in the UNE EN ISO 9001:2015 norms. This certification backs the excellence of the work carried out, which translates into greater efficiency and improvements in the services offered to Purebred Spanish

Horse breeders the world over. Finally, thanks to the work of the PRE Breeding Program over the past 15 years, 70,000 genetic assessments have been carried on PRE Horses. Just last month, the PRE Stud Book published the 13,500 genetic assessments for Dressage on its web site. This information is fully accessible and free of charge for breeders, as is the data contained in the Official Breeding Catalog, which is an extremely useful tool that contributed to the dissemination of the best PRE genetics, while at the same time increasing the genetic progress in future generations, especially within the current economic situation, where it is essential to improve stud farm productivity and competition to guarantee feasibility. ÂĄÂĄ

Juan Tirado, at his last meeting as ANCCE President, announced the main novelties undertaken by the ANCCE General PRE Stud Book Council over the past year. Together with PRE Stud Book manager Arancha Rodríguez, he explained the basic points upon which the management has focused their attention since June of 2017. Important matters discussed included the creation of a molecular genetics lab to genetically analyze PRE Horses; in the future, this service is expected to expand to cover other breeds and species. This possibility has been contemplated within the framework of EU and national legislation, and it would fall within the scope of Stud Book quality, based on the requirement of UNE EN ISO 9001:2008. Another topic covered was phase three of an in depth IT security audit at the PRE

Stud Book. This audit has been ongoing for several months by a top-notch external IT auditing firm. This service seeks to guarantee maximum safety and security of all PRE Stud Book management and information systems. Lastly, the possibility of a new version of the LG PRE ANCCE Stud Book App was assessed, both for Android as well

as iOs, with performance and security improvements. At this latest meeting, Tirado took advantage of the moment to bid farewell as the President of ANCCE and other members of the Council. He emphasized his satisfaction with the “credibility and respect achieved by said body,” as well as the “high quality of their management.” ¡¡

Presentation Models in Dressage When you want a horse to stand out, be eye-catching or appear more marketable, it is important that the horse be more expressive. There is a series of effects that give every horse greater expression: freedom and follow-through of the shoulders, going forwards (almost reaching medium paces), a greater suspension, etc.

w TEXT: JORGE CONDE photos: Lily Forado

WHEN AT an auction, where the horses are presented under saddle, riders tend to concentrate on ensuring that their mounts go in what is very graphically described as “popping to try to ensure that this visual effect loosens the wallets of the spectators. On occasion, the rider confuses selling with presenting; although in many cases, the results obtained are as desired. Nevertheless, is this a useful or valid training model? What is happening when it is used? And, how can one identify it? A few years ago, in the Functionality test of Conformation-Functionality Competitions, it became fashionable to present horses at medium trot, with a great deal of contact with the mouth, and a certain tendency towards passage, etc. The objective was for the horse to look flashy in front, elevating its knees to give the sensation of activity, and length of stride, etc. In this model, other parts of the horse suffer physical and technically. The truth is that this model, from afar, is difficult to differentiate; on many occasions, this has meant that it has been over-rewarded as well as a guarantee for success. Many riders

54

have become experts in hiding defects while managing to bring out something in the horse that really does not exist. To start with, I am going to review the drawbacks of this model when its use is prolonged over time. For a horse to be able to use its shoulders in this way, especially when it is young, it has to be a little tense and to be overly excited. This tension is far from detrimental if and when it is positive; however, once a certain level is exceeded, it becomes negative, because it is derived from stress, and that is when things change. Once the horse understands the message that it has to really use its shoulders and accumulate tension, the musculature of the back becomes blocked and it leaves its hindquarters trailing, even though it remains active. To do this, the horse has to remain balanced, with a light hindquarters (it does not have to be self-sustained) and it needs a firm, strong and stable contact (not necessarily permeable). These effects are pernicious and difficult to correct. On the other hand, it is one thing to work in an arena, and quite another to train at home. It is not possible to

dressage work with a presentation model, on a daily basis. An athlete does not run every day; rather he/she varies his/ her routine, and the hard work takes place in the gymnasium; we must take our horse to the gymnasium. By this, I mean that, while at home, most of the horse’s work should be planned and based on a model in which it must bend and work on different planes, including working on its conditional capacities: longitudinal, lateral, up and down, physically maturing its flexibility, resistance, strength and speed of reaction. correct Models Once consolidated, each competition has its own presentation model depending on the level of the test, and the age of the horse, etc. So, let us take a look at these age-based models: › At 4 years of age, the paces of the horse should be displayed in the best way possible. Correct mechanics are essential. Four-time canters, ambling or lateralization and irregularities in the trot will lead directly to the lowest scores. If these are correct, the judges then look for qualities such as length of stride, elasticity, connection and a suitable tempo. It is at this age, that the young horse is most seen in its purest state, and it is here that defects due to a lack of control or precision are pardoned. Judge wants to see the horse with a suitable attitude for its age: natural, with an average neck height, maintaining the desire to go forwards, showing that it can bend correctly on both reins, is symmetrical, etc. › At the age of 5, the attitude should continue to be natural, although the phases of coming and going should come into play. In addition to the previous concepts, care must be taken with straightness, a certain degree of impulsion should be appearing and the paces must be cadenced. All the movements must go through the back and the horse must demonstrate that it is using its top line to achieve its locomotion. Lastly, it must show willingness for collection. › At 6 years of age, the concept of collection must be present at specific 56

times, although it movements must continue to be flowing. Collected walk is only shown as preparation for pirouettes. Shoulder-in, half-pass and isolated changes must be confirmed. It is less important that the twotrack work be brilliant, rather, the horse must perform them with ease and harmoniously and must remain regular and flexible. › At 7 years of age, the attitude is now that of Prix St Georges (not GP); nevertheless, the horse must not be shortened to excess. Impulsion must come from behind and not from the neck. The keys of the Training Scale must continue to be present. If a good score is desired, the horse must execute technical exercises. The difference at PSG level is more in the manner of judging and that it is more forgiving in the different exercises (pirouettes may be a little more open, series changes of three rather than five, etc.). general ADVICE • Know the strong and weak points of your horse. In a presentation, it is important not to show where the horse is weak. If it has a lateral walk, don’t collect excessively. If the transitions do not flow, do them with a slight shoulder-in. The horse must not be permitted to make a mistake in its strong points and take special care in the exercises with a coefficient score. • Sometimes, wanting more implies showing less. Over-pushing the horse could lead to it rushing or losing rhythm, remaining flat. The solution is not always pressure. With a horse that finds lengthening difficult, it is easier to ask for what it is capable of than to force it into trying to give more, with the possibility of a broken pace or rushing, leading to irregularities and flatness. It is important for the rider to know at exactly what point in its training and preparation their horse is and not to ask it to give more than it is capable of, on any particular day. • Riding the test. At 4 years, it is not so important, but after that, circles must be a specific size, they start as the shoulders pass one letter and finish as they pass another, halts 57

dressage

must be four seconds, even if they are before a rein-back. Transitions within any pace must be clear to the viewer. The loops of serpentines must be round, without corners, symmetrical in their shape, with a brief moment of straightness at the change of bend and the horse should follow the line being described. • Do not ask for more of what the horse already produces well; rather, help it in what it is lacking. If a horse has a great deal of suspension, but fails to advance well, do not ask for more suspension; rather, ask that it go forward more. What it already has should be maintained correct, and advantage taken of this, but if taken to extremes, this could end up turning into a defect. • Ensure that your riding does not give clues as to the horse’s problems. Going into half-pass, if it is clear that all the tension is in the inside rein, this tells the viewer that the horse is not on the outside rein and it is very forced. If

ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX POINTS FOR RIDERS IS TO CENTER THEmselves AND LOOK FOR THE CORRECT RHYTHM FOR THE HORSE 58

it is difficult to keep the horse straight and balanced and to do this the reins cross to the outside, this indicates that the horse is not respecting your inside leg. If your hand is very hard, it is clear that the horse is not in self-carriage. • Focus and seek out the ideal rhythm for your horse. This is one of the most difficult jobs for the rider. Judges frequently say that it looks a little fast or slow. So later, the rider takes this to extremes and presents the horse showing the polar opposite, still not getting it correct. My perception is that, little by little, the rider must become capable of identifying the correct rhythm. • Intervene to help the horse. If your horse is nervous and tenses, the solution is not always to close your hand and continue with the test. Sometimes, it is more efficient to release the tension and try to return the horse to a relaxed state. If you get to an exercise and are not ready, it is more advisable to prepare for a stride or two than to fail in the exercise. If the horse falls into walk from a transition and it is difficult to get it to release tension, doing a little shoulderin or looking for a slight flexion could be the solution. Prepare and intervene with half-halts, no-one will chastise you and, if you do this, you will lose fewer points by managing to perform the exercise. • Keep to the Training Scale. This is the method that will be judged. In addition to good riding, it is important to know what gains you points in the arena, and what does not. Follow an ordered method and use the evaluation keys to gain a higher percentage. • Talk to the judges after doing tests and ask their opinions. Meeting them does not go against you; you will always generate empathy if you ask in an educated way and your efforts to improve will go in your favor. This does not gain you a higher score, but it will not deduct anything either. It is the judges who assess you and, on matters of presentation, they are able to help you, and almost all of them will be willing to do so. ¡¡

breeding program

PRE Breeding Program Turns 15 this Year The Purebred Spanish Horse has centuries of history as a breed; it has developed over the years thanks to the work of stud farms and breeders. Until recently, the breeding process was based on the individual criteria of each breeder; it for this very reason that it became essential to establish a Breeding Program that encompasses objective selection. TEXT: Azahara pĂŠrez

a

a new era begins In 2004, the Purebred Spanish Horse Genetic Breeding Program first saw the light. It was put together by ANCCE with the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, under the technical management of MERAGEM Research Group. The objectives of the Breeding Program are to produce horses that are morphologically correct for functionality, without forsaking the distinctive characteristics of the Purebred Spanish Horse. A well- proportioned conformation is essential, not only to have a sports horse, but one with specific emphasis on Dressage. That is why Functionality tests always focus on this discipline. That same year, the first Tribunal for Qualified Breeding Stock (TQB) was held in Jerez de la Frontera, in the form of a performance test. Ninety horses attended the event; including renowned horses such as Norte Lovera and Evento—all future Dressage stars—in addition to Urdidor VII and Triunfadora XXX, who became future Champions of Spain. As a novelty, the first Young Horse Selection Tests took place, and each of the Organizing Committees had access to government grants of up to €12,000. These first selection tests were non-competitive assessments, looking at the competitive qualities of the participants, which offered breeders initial guidance.

WHAT IS THE breeding program all about? It is a program which establishes the objectives for breed selection, performance tests, selection criteria, and the methodology to genetically assess PRE horses. Likewise, it establishes the various breeding stock categories. To have a Breeding Program, genealogical information is a fundamental tool. Thus, in 2007, ANCCE took over Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book management; today, the PRE Stud Book has been recognized as one of the best in the world. It is constantly growing; in 2017 alone, it registered 10,000 horses. 61

This is a 3.8% increase in the PRE census. There are 32,638 active stud farms and 239,813 registered horses from 66 countries. Improving breed morphology is included within the fundamental objectives for selection, along with improving conformation with a specific functionality in mind—in the case of the PRE it is Dressage— and improving functionality in and of itself (Dressage). Regarding conformation, in 2008, ANCCE implemented the Lineal Conformation Score (LCS) system, which assesses horse morphology to obtain useful information; subsequently, this information is incorporated into the genetic assessment of that specific horse. Assessments are not scored in the same way as in Conformation Competitions; the morphological quality of the horse is not judged, nor is a ranking of the participants established. Currently, assessments are carried out for a horse’s basic aptitude for breeding. When it comes to functionality, breeders may present their horses at any of the Young Horse Selection Tests (PSCJ). In 2017 and 2018, 62

ANCCE organized some of these tests at a discount rate. “Dressage” tests are performed in these tests, which correspond to the age of the horse, as stipulated by Spain’s Equine Federation, assesses the paces, walk, trot and canter, submission and general impression, as if it were a competition. Using the data obtained from the horses, both with regards to morphology and dressage, and using their genealogical information (pedigree), a genetic assessment is carried out, both on the horse in question and on its ancestors. The genetic assessment tells us the genetic values of the participants for each variable assessed; in other words, it reports what each horse could pass on to its descendants. For the breed to have a positive evolution, it is essential to have the genetic quality of each horse as a breeding stock, with the objective of improving breed quality, generation after generation. There are currently three genetic categories: • Young Recommended Breeding Stock (YRBS): This genetic category is open to horses between 4 and 6 years of age and that have

participated in the Performance Tests (Conformation and Dressage) and that have been genetically assessed with a positive global assessment (Global Genetic Index (GGI) that exceeds 100). • Improver Breeding Stock: This category is open to horses over the age of seven (7) that have annually undergone a genetic assessment. The genetic assessment of those horses related to the horse being assessed is also taken into account. Horses are eligible for this category when their Global Genetic Index (GGI) exceeds 100 and their degree of reliability exceeds 60%. • Elite Breeding Stock: This category is open to those horses that have achieved the genetic category of Improver Breeding Stock for both Dressage and for Morphology

for Dressage. All of the above must comply with the established morphological, reproductive and health requirements. They are principally available for: • Dressage: In 2017, of the 13,509 (5,882 sire stallions and 7,627 brood mares) assessed from 4,474 stud farms, there were 258 YRBS and two Improvers. This discipline currently also has four Elite Horses. • Morphological Aptitude for Dressage: 341 YRBS and 34 Improvers. More than 146,833 genetic assessments for conformation took place in 2018 (55,839 stallions and 90,994 mares) from 29,803 stud farms. • Eventing: This was implemented in 2014, and there are currently two horses in the category JRR. 63

A novelty in 2018 is a genetic assessment using the data from performance tests carried out up to the end of 2017. This is the first time that the genetic assessment of the horses has taken place within the first few months of the year, with the objective of having the genetic data available in time to plan for annual coverings. To do this, data from 13,884 performance tests for Dressage was used (7,710 in PSCJ) on a total of 2,499 horses (140 mares and 2,359 stallions) from 1,347 stud farms. This accounts for an increase over the previous year of 10.04% in the number of participating horses and 17.85% in the number of stud farms. For this genetic assessment, 13.509 horses (5,882 stallions and 7,627 mares) from 4,474 stud farms were assessed for Dressage. This translates into a 6.2% increase over the previous year. The PRE Breeding Program could be summarized into five phases: 1st. Genealogical assessment: Birth Register. All horses are identified and their parentage is confirmed for their subsequent registration in the Stud Book. A genealogical study is carried out to calculate the parameters 64

related with the genetic variability of the breed (consanguinity). 2 nd Genealogical Assessment: Definitive register. Here, horses are registered in the Breeding Stock Register and the main parameters are calculated to estimate their genetic variability, such as the consanguinity and finishing index, etc. Thus, genetic studies of hereditary diseases and abnormalities are carried out. 3 rd Performance Tests and genetic assessment based on their own merits. With the participation of horses in the Young Horse Selection Tests and the LCS, the initial genetic assessments on those horses are carried out, based on their results. These horses may seek the genetic category as Young recommended Breeding Stock. 4 th Genetic Assessment by descendants. A genetic assessment is performed that takes into account the results of their descendants. These horses may seek the categories as Improver and Elite Breeding Stock. 5th Dissemination of results by means of ANCCE communication

channels and the Breeding Stock Catalog. Following the annual genetic assessment, MERAGEM Research Group makes the results of the genetic assessments available to ANCCE for their subsequent announcement. These are not only the results of those horses eligible for any one of the genetic categories (published in the Breeding Stock Catalog), but of all the horses assessed, which are published on the PRE Stud Book website. Thus, this information becomes an extremely useful tool that is made available to all breeders; it contributes to the correct selection of breeding stock and the genetic improvement of stud farms, and, consequently, the breed.

BREEDING STOCK CATALOG Annually, ANCCE makes the PRE Breeding Stock Catalog (for Dressage and Morphology) available to all breeders. The Breeding Stock Catalog is an annual publication in which the details of all the horses that have been accepted into any of the genetic categories are displayed. Truly, it is a useful tool for breeders when they are deciding their future breeding stock, the characteristics of their stud farm and their selection objectives, so that the desired traits are passed on to their young stock. At the same time, any breeder whose horses appear in the Breeding Stock Catalog knows for certain that his/her horses have passed a strict 65

genetic assessment process, which bears the corresponding monetary value, in addition to extra prestige for their breeding horses. The first Breeding Stock Catalog for Dressage was published in 2006. A total of 57 horses were presented at the first genetic assessments, which included Doblon TR, Norte Lovera and Fuego XII (Fuego de CĂĄrdenas), among others. In 2007, assessments increased by 23.9%, which demonstrates their success. The first Young Recommended PRE Breeding S tock Catalog for Lineal Morphological Characteristics was published in 2010. It elaborated the data from the genetic assessments using the Lineal Conformation Score (LCS). For this, 8,793 horses were assessed, a number which, in 2011, rose to 10,978. The Elite Breeding Stock category was included for the first time in 2012, with ErmitaĂąo III; in 2016 this category included Impaciente II and Evento; and in 2017, Utrerano VII, along with the 114 horses that obtained a genetic category. We can only hope that these numbers will continue to increase to demonstrate the successes achieved. a promising future This method has been a world pioneer that has marked the difference and 66

become a reference for other breeds. Therefore, all types of tools have been proposed to ensure a meticulous selection process; this will help the PRE continue to develop, thus ensuring a prosperous future for the breed. Carlos Escribano Mora, president of the Breeding Program Management Commission stated that “in recent years, ANCCE, in its continuous efforts to advance and progress in the Breeding Program, has put into practice and developed a plan to enable a reduction in costs for the Young Horse Selection Tests (PSCJ), the objective of which is to involve the greatest possible number of breeders and, therefore, increase participation and the number of performance tests in the discipline of Dressage. During this time, breeders have been made aware of the importance of the genetic selection of breeding stock to improve their stud farms and the breed, thanks to a proven and safe methodology that allows for the identifications and selection of the most suitable horses, depending on specific selection objectives. The participation of thousands of breeders in this Program has made it possible to know the genetic information of their breeding stock; that is to say, the traits they

pass on to their descendants, and to elaborate a presentation card for the national and international markets, as a guarantee of the excellence of the young horses produced. This excellence should act as an incentive to all other PRE breeders to participate in this Breeding Program. Only by collective efforts from a growing number of breeders can we continue to consolidate the improvement of this breed, which is an emblem of select Spanish livestock.” ANCCE continues to work on new methods to help breeders breed PRE horses in any part of the world, ensuring the future and quality of the breed. In 2017, following insistence by ANCCE over an extended period of time, the Purebred Spanish Horse

was included within the Marca España (Spain as a Brand). Courage, temperance, pride, harmony, intelligence and great toughness are but some of the breed’s traits; it is one of the oldest and most valued breeds in the world; it is a breed that has symbolized Spanish culture for centuries and that in the future could become part of Spain’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, as is now indicated on the official website. This is why, more than ever, the PRE is enjoying its best time and it is the responsibility of everyone, from within ANCCE, breeders, professionals and enthusiasts to not falter when working to ensure that the Purebred Spanish Horse continues growing and evolving, taking giant steps over the up-coming years. ¡¡ 67
