Tirado Agudo President of ANCCE

Moving in the right direction HAVING RECENTLY CONCLUDED OUR ASSOCIATION ASSEMBLY, I have a new opportunity to share with you. First of all, I would like to thank all of you for your presence, critique and contributions. A FEW YEARS AGO, SOMEONE STATED THAT PRAISE WEAKENS. I am fully aware that although we are doing a great deal, it is more than possible that some are not happy nor do they coincide with the opinions of other members. The Assembly is a forum for critique, a space to present initiatives and even differences. That is why I would also like to acknowledge the contributions of those, who in an effort to sponsor the growth and development of ANCCE, have expressed their differences with some of my undertakings as President. AS THE GREEKS STATED, IT IS FROM THE THESIS TO THE ANTITHESIS that synthesis arises. Synthesizing the meeting held this past June 4th, I can honestly conclude that many tasks have been commenced, but a long road still awaits us. With the fathomless help of all members, I believe that in these next two years, we are moving in the right direction. AT THE ANNUAL MEETING, I BITTERLY COMPLAINED ABOUT ABUSE, slanderous and even defamatory use of social networks by a limited number of breeders. In any organization, its voters have the right to disagree with how that organization is handled. However, what is unacceptable is that a smear campaign be launched to displace that leader from a post to which he (or she) was legally elected and all based upon that person’s private activities. In this regard, I too will act at the personal level--not at the institutional level--to take any and all actions for which I have a legal right. I would not like to see the repetition of such situations, and not for my own benefit, but rather for those who occupy future leadership roles. IN THIS REGARD, AT THE ASSEMBLY, I EXPRESSED MY COMMITMENT TO CREATING A CODE OF ETHICS for mandatory compliance by all members. This has nothing to do with members’ right to freely express their opinions, a right that is sanctioned by our Constitution. What is unacceptable is to question people’s integrity. Constructive criticism of association management: I welcome it. Deliberately fabricating falsehoods to take advantage of personal circumstances of members to erode their credibility: never. THAT IS WHY THIS EDITORIAL PRAISES THOSE MEMBERS who use our Assembly as a tool to express their agreement or disagreement with the policies of the General Board of Directors. That is the place, the stage where, to the extent of our possibilities, ANCCE is enhanced. Anything else is but a smear campaign that publically deteriorates the image of our Association, independently of the individual in the presidential seat. ¡¡

whatever the discipline may be. Since 1996, adapted Dressage is a Para-Olympic Sport. Following the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) model, Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation incorporated it in 2009. This is a discipline in which Purebred Spanish Horses are achieving excellent results and very positive assessments that underline the breed’s good character, gentleness and ability to concentrate.

He was one of the most prestigious personal-success authors in the world; US writer Napoleon Hill stated that “the starting point for any achievement is desire.” It is the desire or motivation to continue improving one’s self that leads riders with a disability to climb onto a horse and reach the zenith of Paraequestrian, or Adapted Dressage. The same holds true for any other athlete,

PARA-EQUESTRIAN DRESSAGE is not yet widely-known, although it is gaining more and more recognition within Spain. In recent years and at the international level, this sport has become extraordinarily consolidated. Purebred Spanish Horses are making major inroads in this field thanks to the dissemination of the breed by Spanish riders and also to the presence of PREs at events such as the World Equestrian Games (WEG). The objective behind both conventional and adapted dressage is the same. The difference lies in the rider. In Para-equestrian Dressage, the competing riders have physical, mental or sensorial disabilities. Nevertheless, disabilities vary greatly; for the competition to be as fair as possible, riders undergo a prior evaluation to assign them to the corresponding grade. There are five different grades or categories: Ia, Ib, II, III and IV. The grades from Ia up to III are for riders with more severe disabilities. These grades determine the difficulty of the Dressage tests to be performed and the size of the arena where they compete--the higher the grade, the more difficult the test. Depending on the grade and the disability, a rider may compete using what is known as “compensatory measures.” For example, elements making up for the absence of one or several limbs or a lack of vision may be used; the objective is to balance the dissimilarities of some riders with regards to others. In the words of Fátima Cao who is responsible for Para-equestrian disciplines at Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation (RFHE), “in 2009, an integration process was implemented, which recommended that single-sport federations, such as equestrianism, also include adapted sport. The RFHE was one of the first to apply this mandate. We have always tried to ensure that a person with a disability has the same opportunities to participate in equestrianism as everyone else, even though at the international level there are only two disciplines

that are regulated in this aspect: Dressage and Carriage Driving.” Cao states that, “at the RFHE we have tried, right from the start, to ensure that competitions are always inclusive; every time that there is a conventional Dressage competition, an Adapted event runs simultaneously. For example, at the upcoming European Championships-to be held in August 2017 in Sweden-the event will, for the first time, be inclusive. The event includes both Conventional and Para-equestrian Dressage.” In this regard, she asserts that “there are mutual benefits for all riders. For the Para-equestrians, to see Ferrer-Salat or García Mena competing really elevates their self-esteem. For those without a disability, seeing para-equestrian counterparts performing their same exercises is a lesson in life.” PRE HORSES IN SPAIN’S PARAEQUESTRIAN DRESSAGE For Cao, “the PRE is an ideal horse for Para-equestrian riders, especially at the lower levels, because it submits to a greater control of its own body. In addition to the excellent competition lines developed in recent years, PREs are reliable, have good character and are easy to handle. At the 2016 Absolute Dressage Championship of Spain, of the 18 participants in Paraequestrian Dressage, nine rode PRE horses. This is quite a high number. For example, Luna CCL, ridden by Olga Jordá, was most outstanding as they won the Gold medal in Grade IV. For Olga Jordá from Valencia, who has been competing in Paraequestrian Dressage since 2011, “the PRE gives me a lot of confidence. Throughout my life, I have ridden many different breeds, Anglo-Arabs, Hispano-Arabs, Thoroughbreds, etc., and I have always liked a good horse, whatever the breed. But the confidence that you get with a PRE cannot be found in any other breed. It might be scared for a moment, but it doesn’t have the abrupt reactions of other breeds; it pulls itself together with ease. It has a

report is needed to take part in Paraequestrian Dressage, because in the best of cases, most riders suffer a lot of pain and this must be dealt with. This sport motivates you daily and this desire to excel is therefore applicable to all the others aspects of your life.” With regards to the support enjoyed by this discipline, Jordá emphasizes that “at the international level, Dressage is well ahead of us; in Spain, Para-equestrian Dressage benefits from economic aid and incredible technical plans, the same as Conventional Dressage. Here, with Para-equestrian dressage, we do what we can with the resources that we have, but we lack institutional support.”

huge ability to concentrate and it really adapts well to Para-equestrian riders. Let’s say there are riders with spasticity problems, thus causing involuntary muscle movements and pull on the horse’s mouth. Not all horses are able to react to these movements effectively. Our balance is not usually the best and this could confuse the horse. For that reason, we have to seek out a good horse that gives us confidence and looks after us. Nevertheless,” she assures, “at international Para-equestrian competitions, we see riders who have absolutely nothing to envy the best of Conventional Dressage; although one or several limbs may be lacking, they compete with admirable quality in their exercises and balance. This is achieved thanks to the effective preparation of both horse and rider, and of course, the trainers. That is why the Purebred Spanish Horse is so well suited; it is very easy to handle.” For Jordá, “a lot of will-power

UNITY MAKES STRENGTH It is precisely institutional support that Spain’s Para-equestrian Associ ati on i s se e k i n g. This association, whose headquarters are in Pamplona under the leadership of María Ángel Plágaro, was founded in 2014 to develop and integrate Paraequestrianism into competition. It is run by riders with disabilities, together with trainers, judges, physiotherapists and athletes’ relatives, among others. Currently, it has fifty members from all over Spain; approximately, half of all active Para-equestrian riders in Spain belong to the association. As Plágaro commented, the association “wants to publicize this discipline, while at the same time supporting and guiding riders to facilitate their participation in championships, which, in general, is expensive. We also collaborate with the RFHE for National Paraequestrian Days; we channel sponsorships and have a grassroots training project based on geographic areas, with courses for riders, trainers, etc. We are also seeking out Para-equestrian riders who are already competing to join us in an effort to give gain strength; together, we have greater power to promote Adapted Dressage and increased representation at national

level. In 2016, many of the riders who finished at the top during the Absolute Dressage Championship of Spain in the Adapted classes are members of the association; this too makes us feel more united. Nevertheless, we need more help, especially from the lower levels.” Spain’s Para-equestrian Association has recently signed an agreement with the Ministry of Defense, through Cria Caballar, to grant horses, free-of-charge; in this case, all are Purebred Spanish Horses. These horses are for Paraequestrian riders to ride at national and international competition. This, on the one hand, is backing for Purebred Spanish Horse, as it promotes breed qualities at competitions held outside of Spain and, on the other hand, it benefits Para-equestrian riders, bearing in mind that the main problem is to find a horse that is manageable and one that adapts to the circumstances of these riders. According to Plágaro, “having your own horse to work with is good for both rider and horse, because, knowing each other facilitates anticipating each other’s reactions and thus achieving better results. In addition, as all these are PREs, which are calmer, it guarantees 14

that the exercise is easier for the riders to perform. PRE & WEG Not only do Spain’s Para-equestrian riders appreciate PRE horses for this discipline. Proof lays in the outstanding participation of the breed at the most recent World Equestrian Games; in 2010 and 2014, teams from Germany, the USA and Australia counted on the breed for their national teams. In 2010 and for the first time, Paraequestrian Dressage was included at the Games. Germany debuted with a PRE in Grade IV with Empaque IV, owned by Casa Estanque, bred by Yeguada Valentín de Soto, and was ridden by Juliane Theuring. In 2014, the US team participated with the PRE Kimiakin, owned by Waterway Farms, bred by Jackass Mt Ranch, and ridden by Susan Treabess, in grade IV. Another PRE horse was part of the Australian team: Hatero de PB, ridden by Elisabeth Sobecki in grade III, owned by Kerrie Massey and bred by Hermanos Peces-Barba. They all achieved excellent results and demonstrated the excellent qualities of the Purebred Spanish Horse for Para-equestrian Dressage well beyond the reaches of Spain itself. ¡¡

10th Honorary Luncheon by Justicia y Caballo Discussion Circle Once again, the city of Sevilla was the scene chosen by the Discussion Circle “Justicia y Caballo” (Justice and Horses) to honor Miguel Sánchez Delage, Honorary President of the Sanlúcar de Barrameda Horse Racing Commission, and Antonio Moreno Andrade, Judicial Representative for Western Andalusia and Ceuta. After the agape, commemorative plaques were given. Letters were read from those honored guests who were unable to attend but wanted to

express their joy for this recognition. As expected, the honored guests also expressed words of appreciation. Antonio Moreno was the first to share his thoughts, with his wonderful art and expressiveness, so typical of Cadiz. The audience offered a standing ovation as he spoke about his interest in topics that are so deeply rooted in Andalusia such as bullfighting as practiced by Curro Romero, good wine and Flamenco by Camarón (de la Isla) and added: “Without forsaking the

fact that justice is also sensitive.” On the other hand, Miguel Sanchez emphasized the three pure breeds found in Sanlúcar de Barrameda: horse races, manzanilla sherry and prawns. With this edition, the Discussion C i rc l e c e l e b ra t e s a d e c a d e o f satisfactions for its participants, both with the backing of its members as well as the institutions of two sectors to which social activities are dedicated: Horses and Justice. ¡¡

Canal Sur y Castilla-La Mancha TVbroadcast the SICAB 2015 Show Regional TV channels -Canal Sur in Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha TV in Castile- have broadcast the full SICAB 2015 show titled “This is our horse.” Thus, the music and equestrian presentations of the impressive show that shared the beauty, nobility, versatility and potential of the Purebred Spanish Horse were 16

seen by an ample audience from their homes. This is a first for ANCCE; thanks to this broadcast, both the PRE and SICAB increase their coverage. Between the two channels, more than 40 thousand people saw the show. Directed by Antonio Moya, the Show tells the story of a sire stallion born 25

years ago and that was the Champion of Spain at SICAB in 1997 at SICAB. With the very best national and international equestrian performers in the world, the Show was a success in the opinion of both the general public and the critics. It was considered one of the best shows of all times. ¡¡

6th Workshop for Equestrian Tourist Professionals

RAFAEL LEMOS

Cabra (a medium-sized town in the province of Cordoba) was chosen as the venue for the 6th Workshop for Equestrian Tourist Professionals. The workshop was inaugurated by Francisco Casas, the Alderman for Tourism and Rafael Belmonte, the President of the Andalusian Rural Tourist and Equestrian Entrepreneurs’ Association (AGETREA). As pointed out by the Alderman for Tourism, Cabra has become the ideal framework for such workshops, as the town has long-standing ties with the equestrian world. Cabra is proud of its two, world-class Purebred Spanish stud farms, a number of companies dedicated to equestrian tourism and the fact that equitation is practiced by an important group of enthusiasts. The main objective behind this initiative was to bring together the many professionals working in the sector, consolidate a contact platform and collaborate to carry out common projects. Likewise, legislation affecting the equestrian tourist industry was also discussed, as was vocational training, marketing equestrian tourism and Equestrian Tourism in Spain as a brand name. Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation presented its Equestrian Tourism Program in an effort to open contents to professionals within the sector. ¡¡

How did you get started in the world of Purebred Spanish Horses? My love for Purebred Spanish Horses as an amateur started years ago, and now as a breeder, that love has become passion and grown in intensity. How many PRE horses are there at your stud farm? Currently, the farm has more than 120 horses, with 68 mares and 8 stallions, as well as some extraordinary foals of different ages. Your best stallion/mare/foal is: My best stallion is Universo de Pereto; the mare I like the most is Justiciera XLV. The foal I have the highest expectations for is Bondalero VAP. What are your priorities: sports, hacking, breeding, etc.? Currently, the farm focuses on breeding to obtain quality stock that will soon be competing in both sports and Conformation competitions. What does the future hold for PRE horses in your country? Purebred Spanish Horses are highly

LIAISON WITH MEMBERS

Meeting with breeders in Catalonia The Membership Commission, presided by Francisco Angelet, in collaboration with Juan Vidal-Ribas as the spokesperson for the Aragon and Catalonian members, met with Purebred Spanish Horse breeders from Catalonia in Barcelona. The goal was to meet with Juan Tirado, the President of ANCCE, who stressed the importance of being a full-fledged member. Likewise, he appreciated the efforts to maintain ties with the association and insisted that from the Board of Directors, efforts will continue to benefit the sector, without forsaking other breeders. The main topics covered were the bonuses for members of ANCCE when requesting PRE Stud Book services, changes in the latest Rules and Regulations for Conformation-Functional Competitions, the drafting of the Judging Manual and the Technical Committee of Judges. Likewise, information was shared about the promotions being carried out in Russia and China, among other minor subjects. Breeders and the President of ANCCE coincided in the fact that it is surprising that there is not a single Conformation Competition in Catalonia, when it is a major PRE production zone of Spain. Other regions, with less significant herds have more annual competitions. In this regard, Tirado offered all of the available mechanisms and aid so that the breeders, themselves, can launch this initiative, coordinate it and make it a reality. ¡¡

The High Commissioner underlined the importance of ANCCE for Spain as it implements activities linked to a native breed in more than 65 countries

This Collaboration Agreement reinforces promotional projects established by ANCCE to improve the image of the Purebred Spanish Horse abroad while, at the same time, carrying out a number of activities that focus on emerging markets such as Russia, China and the Arabian Peninsula. Juan Tirado, on the other hand, was appreciative of the generosity shown by institutions and the service and collaboration shown towards ANCCE, thanks to which a joint agenda has been created to continue to face the many challenges and guarantee the promotion of PRE horses both in Spain and abroad. Tirado also expressed his regard for the important role played by the High Commissioner since 2012 in planning, coordinating and promoting the many actions of public and private bodies working to promote the image of Spain throughout the world. During the meeting, the High Commissioner’ open-minded vision and the depth of analysis regarding the PRE, the activity that ANCCE generates and just how much Spain receives from the equine sector have all contributed to the value of the breed for MARCA ESPAÑA, both on the national and international scene. ¡¡

After the success in downloads and visits to ANCCE’s official competition App since it was launched last September, and repeated requests for this service by breeders, ANCCE has created a new advertising route on this new channel. The format, which will house a maximum of fifteen advertisers, includes a banner that appears on the lower edge of the screen of tablets, smartphones and on the Conformation Competition web site (www.concursosancce.com). Given the current repercussions of this application, it has become a unique opportunity to promote your stud farm and equine-related business. Contrary to other communication channels, the ANCCE Competition App is unique as it offers official results and the genealogies of the PRE horses participating in Conformation and Dressage. Once downloaded, without opening your navigator, introduce the web address or use your search engine to quickly access results, qualifications, scores, rules, videos, photos, etc. Furthermore, and as exclusive information, you can follow Conformation Competitions live! View the judge’s scores, learn about improvements throughout the season, download official genealogies as provided by the ANCCE PRE Stud Book for each participating horse and search historic competitions. In the case of the last two events, this was their first edition. Both enjoyed outstanding participation and the unanimous opinion of breeders was that these Competitions have ample potential for the 28

future. Undoubtedly, they will grow in quality and the number of participating horses. At each of these Competitions, ANCCE was represented by its President Juan Tirado. The President of the Membership Commission, Francisco Angelet accompanied him, as well as members of the Board of Directors and two people from the office, to attend breeders and enthusiasts. They were at the stand to respond to any doubt or question asked and of course, to welcome new members. ÂĄÂĄ

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Renewal of ANCCE leadership At the latest ANCCE Executive Committee meeting, held on Friday, the 17th of June, letters sent by three members of the Committee were read. Specifically, Pedro Vallejo Ruiz (Vice-president), Antonio Ruiz Fernández (Secretary) and Manuel Novales de la Escalera (Member-at-large) informed the Association President of their irrevocable resignation due to irreconcilable differences with other members of the Executive Committee. Given this situation, the President of ANCCE, together with the remaining members of the Executive Committee unanimously appointed new members. These include José Juan Morales and José Varo as Vice-president and Member-at-large, respectively, and Ignacio Candau who is already a member of this Committee, but who will now be the Secretary. All of these new components have ample experience in management posts. Juan Tirado views the role of the outgoing members as “substantial and important” over the past years, as they have worked to comply with the election program. Nevertheless, he guarantees that “we will continue as we have to date with the work launched in 2014. We will attend the new objectives established by this Board of Directors; we will create new measures without generating losses, and what is even more important, all for the benefit of full-fledged members of ANCCE.” Likewise, the Executive Committee has decided that breeders Pedro Pastor and José Díaz Solís become full members of the ANCCE Board of Directors. PRE STUD BOOK Another important point on the Executive Committee agenda was to appoint the ANCCE PRE Stud Book Commission, in keeping with the new Rules & Regulations approved at the General Assembly. The constitutional meeting was held on July 8th, with the following members being voted into office: - Juan Tirado Agudo, President - Javier Conde Cerrato, Vice-president - Ignacio Candau Fernández-Mensaque, Member-at-large with more than 20 years of seniority at ANCCE) - José Ignacio Sánchez Velázquez, Member-at-large (breeder) - Feliciano Reyes Seda, Member-at-large representing the PRE Breeding Program Management Commission - Álvaro Muguruza Garteizgogeascoa, Member-at-large representing Associations that are members of ANCCE. From now on, this Commission will be responsible for all matters regarding the management of the PRE Stud Book, as indicated in the Rules and Regulations. ¡¡

These extremely successful sessions were organized by the technical group formed by the Plan for the Development of Sports, under the leadership of Jorge Conde and whose trainer is José Antonio García Mena, and the ANCCE Competition department. The horses summonsed to both workshops— all are currently involved in differentiated phases of the season (some adapting to training, others adjusting to the work pace and some in competition)—traveled to Yeguada La Cartuja (Stud Farm), in Jerez de la Frontera, and Centro 30

These two-day workshops focused on generic work, correcting basic attitude, correcting contact in the hand, correct posture and reinforcement of general training principles. Seven 45-minute individual sessions were given together with two 1-hour group sessions where the horses participated in three-horse groups. All tests were recorded for later broadcast; this allows riders and owners to have a better perception of the tests. It also works to individually convince and show the mistakes and virtues of each horse/rider.

Before assessing the videos, Jorge Conde presented the objectives behind this Sports Program. In this regard, he explained the commitment to the horses/riders selected by ANCCE and provided generic information about the training program and process. He also responded to queries and attended suggestions from riders, trainers and breeders. Later, the videos with each participant were shown, commented and analyzed to improve the perception that riders have of themselves. This process was used to provide individualized explanations about the main problems seen and their solutions. The technical team drafted an assessment questionnaire for the workshops, which included three areas: perceived quality, satisfaction and value of the Program. The outcomes materialized in a survey with five, 12-question blocks. Each participant was given a questionnaire to fill out

once the session concluded. As a result, more than 90% of the participants show a very high level of satisfaction; this translates in success for the Sports Program. Such events are a major opportunity for breeders and riders whose sights are on competition, as it is a professional orientation tool which to date, has not been within the reach of many individual breeders. Thus, while such programs are of help to riders, it also avoids many talented horses from being lost in the shuffle. This program will achieve improved results for PRE in competition and position the breed in the world of sports. A third workshops is programmed in Valencia (Eastern Spain) on the 11th and 12th of August. Once the technical team has selected the future participants, their results will be followed carefully, as well as their development throughout the season and at competitions so that future goals can be established. ¡¡

CODE OF ETHICS DRAFTED TO GUARANTEE JUDGING AT CONFORMATION-FUNCTIONAL COMPETITIONS The Technical Committee of Judges has drafted a Code of Ethics to identify those principles and values that Judges and the Association consider to be of major importance when judging Purebred Spanish horses and mares. This code is not seen as an option, but rather a mandatory conviction for judges to follow. moreover,

32

this Code of Ethics seeks to develop the principle values of ethics, such as independence, fairness, justice, competence, correctness and integrity. At the same time, it strives to become a guide for the correct actions of all judges. Technical Committee of Judges has created an email address at comitejueces@ancce.com where suggestions relative to the Code or other Conformation-Functional Competition-related topics may be sent. ¡¡

ANCCE holds its 44th Ordinary General Assembly El ANCCE held its 44th General Assembly Saturday morning at Hacienda San Juan del Hornillo in Sevilla. Members ratified several matters on the agenda, including the 2015 annual accounts, the 2016 budget—exceeding 3 million euros—and agreements adopted by the Board of Directors. In his report, ANCCE President Juan Tirado began by referring to two matters of major importance and relevance for the Association. “In my opinion, the most important in recent months has been to attain bonuses for members of ANCCE when requesting the services provided by the PRE Stud Book office and solving the problems that have arisen in recent years at Conformation Competitions, to seek and achieve a solid, stable and fair framework.” The association is striving greatly to maintain the services provided, 34

creating new ones without generating losses and what is more important is that all these effort benefit full-fledged members of ANCCE. This is the main objective of the current Board of Directors, in office since the 2014 elections. Throughout the past year, ANCCE has worked tirelessly to implement a sports model that guarantees the participation Juan Tirado, of Purebred Spanish Horses President in competitions. On the of ANCCE. one hand, efforts focus on participating at Conformation competitions with grants, the drafting of new Rules & Regulations and a Manual for Judging based on the PRE breed characteristics. On the other hand, Dressage has been a focal point to guarantee a new generation of PRE horses in this sport, with a project that defends, promotes, advises and collaborates in the preparation and reinforcement of quality horses participating at all

levels of Dressage. The objective is to see PRE horses at the World Championship for Young Dressage Horses. The annual Stud Book Report, presented by Director Arancha Rodríguez, pointed out that “the world’s Purebred Spanish Horse herd as of December 31, 2015 surpassed 220,000 horses. In recent years, we have registered 11,000 new horses and 2500 new breeders from countries such as Bahrein, Estonia, Lithuania, Jordan, Brazil, etc.” With regards to the ANCCE Work Commission report, Carlos Escribiano as President of the Breeding Commission presented the statistics for the PRE horses that have been assessed genetically in 2015. “In Dressage, there have been 11,313 horses (4,840 stallions and 6,473 mares), of which 34 have been included in the Catalog for Dressage and Eventing. Thirty are considered Young Recommended Breeding Stock (27 stallions and three mares); three are Improver Stock and one is Elite. Also, 16,213 performance tests have taken place using the Lineal Conformation Score on 9,867 mares and 6,346 stallions. Using this data, 47,796 horses have been assessed genetically (14,892 stallions and 32,904 mares). Of these, 110 horses earned one of the genetic categories and were included in the Catalog of PRE Breeding Stock for Conformation Traits for Dressage.” Francisco Angelet, President of the Membership Commission, presented the attendees with a summary of the main measures developed by this Commission. One of the most important is the appointment of the Members’ Spokesperson, followed by the training courses in Conformation and Functionality. These courses are 36

for members, enthusiasts and farm managers. He also commented on the success of the presentation of horses for sale in the arena during SICAB. Pedro Pingarrón, President of the Press, Promotion and Marketing Commission, introduced renewed ANCCE communication resources (web and magazine) and the new Competition App. He also explained and underlined the important efforts being carried out to promote PRE horses internationally. A number of efforts focus on emerging markets such as Russia, China and the Arabian Peninsula. Another novelty is the collaboration agreement signed with Marca España to promote the PRE as a breed in its national and international projects. Likewise, he emphasized the backing from this institution when requesting that the Purebred Spanish Horse be considered Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture and the UNESCO. The activity that ANCCE generates and what Spain receives from the sector has undoubtedly provided added value for a breed. This is something that makes MARCA ESPAÑA an asset both nationally and internationally. Lastly, the Assembly named Tomas Terry Merello from Cadiz as the 2016 Honorary Member. This breeder, from the stud farm Isabel Merello, Viuda de Terry, has earned an ample number of awards, including the “Golden Horse” and “Champion of Champions.” However, even greater than his skills in the business, agricultural and breeding worlds is his sense of friendship, which is behind his excellent relationship with ANCCE. For many years, he has collaborated as PR at SICAB. ¡¡

Conformation Competitions and Technical Committee of Judges it has been extremely satisfying to have collaborated on the Judging Manual for Conformation Competitions. This Manual responds to the need to have systematic verdicts based on a single set of objective and transparent assessment criteria that arises from consensus and the interpretation of PRE breed quality. With this, personal taste is avoided as are individual concepts of the Purebred Spanish Horse, which are always affected by personal perception and equine experience. a

APROVED by the ANCCE Executive Committee and ratified by its Board of Directors, it was agreed that this Manual be drafted as a necessary guideline for all of the Judges who daily judge Purebred Spanish Horse Conformation-Functional Competitions. Those responsible for drafting this Manual have sought to design a useful and effective tool. It is based on PRE breed parameters, the training scale and its adaptation, by age, to Purebred Spanish Horses, the point assignment scale determined by the International Equestrian Federation to assess the various parameters for movement in young horses and the conformation and functionality records themselves, modifying the former to maximize quality and penalize defects in an effort to achieve an impartial and better differentiated classification. As a result, this has led to the creation of tables and definitions to, among other functions, serve as guidelines for breeders when assessing the tests and to facilitate the task of assessing their own horses. Thus, this Manual has been conceived as an instrument to help judges, breeders and handlers find their bearings when it comes to conformation (initial objective). At the same time, given the density and dimension of the subject, the Manual strives to include all of those concepts that help determine the assignment of the fairest score for each movement or body area. It should therefore become the reference point for a philosophy that inspires judges in their dayto-day work, keeping individual interpretations and external influences at arm’s length (final objective). 41

conformation With this, much more information than has even existed to date is now available. This same information will be the foundation for experts to study the details that guide them regarding what score should be assigned to the various sections making up the Conformationfunctional competition score sheet for Purebred Spanish Horses. It is important to clarify that this manual should not be confused with a set of competition regulations. For this reason, it does not include procedures or how to run competitions; rather, it is a guide to determine the quality of a performance. It is the scale that Judges should use for the

various competition assessments that PREs undergo at Conformation Competitions. Obviously, the demand to process the information and score a horse weighs heavy on the shoulders of any judge; more than what one can reasonably expect. This is especially true when considering social pressure, difficulties and the urgency of time. That is why it is essential that judges depend on systematic standards, based on a single assessment criterion that is objective and transparent. In summary, it must be stated that this manual strikes balance between what a Purebred Spanish Horse should have as a species as well as what it offers as a breed. As such, it responds to current market demands: an exceptionally beautiful horse, with magnificent character and correct movement. Finally, and as the president of ANCCE indicated in the editorial of the previous issue, the first step, and the most necessary and important, is that the breeders and judges accept the rules of the game. From then onwards, this Manual or other future contributions that take place must be understood as an integrated part of a reliable assessment system and process that reduces the human factor to seeks a fair, transparent and unanimous judging, based on the established norms. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE OF JUDGES One of the novelties included in the new Conformation Competition Rules and Regulations is the creation of a Technical Committee of Judges. Members of this body are not currently involved in competition judging. Within the Technical Committee, there are two specific elements: a Technical Committee for Conformation, which is jointly presided over by secretary Victor Huertas and Miguel MartĂnez as a member-at-large and the Technical Committee for Functionality. This latter is presided over by Mariano

OBJECTiVES OF THE JUDGiNG MANUAL: - Have greater agreement on scores, associating these with possible defects and virtues. - Add clarity to judging through objectivity and transparency, thus defending the integrity of those judging. - Have standardized criteria to reduce any possible differences at competitions. - Preserve compliance with the rules applied to reduce subjectivity. - Guarantee observance of breed quality while judging. - Guide viewers when assessing competitions. - Facilitate self-evaluation by horse owners, breeders, and enthusiasts prior to exhibition at competition. - Maintain the independence of the two aspects of judging (Conformation & Functionality). - Support the work of participants and judges based on specific rules, rather than debating points of view.

her duties must be born in mind and the seriousness pondered. All agreements will be reached based on the majority vote of committee members; all decisions must be justified, in writing, with the corresponding report being forwarded to the ANCCE Board of Directors. Members of the Technical

Committee of Judges are appointed for a period of one calendar year; in other words, from January 1 to December 31. This covers a full competition season. Thus, every year, the ANCCE Executive Committee will proceed to appoint those who will become members of said Committee. A new document has also been created: Code of Ethics. To date, nothing like it has existed within ANCCE. This document was announced publically on June 2; it seeks to identify those principles and values that Judges and the Association consider most important for the task of judging Purebred Spanish Stallions and Mares. This Code of Ethics is not understood not as an option, but rather as a binding conviction for all the Judges. This code is called to develop the ethical principles included in the values of independence, impartiality, justice and transparency, competence, correction and integrity. At the same time, it seeks to be a guideline for the correct performance of Judges and a solid foundation for the trust of breeders, handlers, riders, or any other participant in Conformation Competitions. The values listed in this code-read the Code of Ethics on the ANCCE website--must inspire Judges in their work, and avoid the criticism for individual behavior or oversights that could negatively affect the Judges, as a group, and/ or ANCCE as an association. Work will continue to improve the current legislative framework to guarantee fair play and poise in judging to attain a competitive model that is a reference for all. Obviously, to achieve this goal, it is important that breeders play an active and fundamental role in this new situation. It is from personal involvement and commitment that work is undertaken jointly for the smooth running of breeder activities. ¡¡

PASSING THROUGH

THE BACK How should the muscles under a rider move? How can we manage to access the back area, start it working and allow energy to pass through it? How do we know whether a horse is blocked or active? How does this inuence riding? Many of us have voiced these questions at one time or another. In this report, I will attempt to respond, and explain a suitable methodology. TEXT: JORGE CONDE

48

t

THE BACK IS ONE of the main parts where the horse is able to exercise resistance. Anatomically, it is a bridge of vertebrae that run from the withers to the loin. Each vertebra of the ten making up the spine has a joint with a rib and the muscular planes of this same area. Thus, horses with short backs generally find it more difficult to bend, and those with long ones have more weight-bearing problems. A horse’s back should play a role in the movement in each pace. A rigid and inactive back, as well as being blocked, can be identified by irregular, tense movements and planes. There is a feeling of disconnection in the horse; it breaks the coordination between the hind quarters and the forehand within each movement and it makes having a good contact difficult. Transitions become more complex as do the possibility of the horse becoming engaged (placing its hind quarters under its body mass). In other

words, the influence of a blocked back on the horse, as a whole, is tremendously negative and harmful for the competitive development of the animal and its ridability in general. As if this were not enough, the horse’s walk tends to become mechanical, generating a tendency towards lateralization, even in walks that are naturally correct. When one says that the back does not work, that is technical language for “a lack of connection” or we say that “it doesn’t go through.” I once heard a national junior trainer say that any muscular block works like “a brake on the impulsion.” He gave a very graphic example: “it is as if you had a hose full of liquid, that is bent back on itself.” In our case, the bend is the rigidity and the liquid the energy. It is clear that when the hose is bent, the liquid flows more slowly or not at all. That is what happens with the lack of connection; all of the energy produced by the hind quarters is wasted, as it fails

to reach the hand and no contact is established. Always, before looking for a technical solution, we must ensure that there are no injuries of any type. Undoubtedly, what disconnects a horse most from the hand is the possibility of pain in the dorsal, lumbar or wither areas. Therefore, if your horse is showing difficulties in this aspect,

pain must be ruled out with the aid of the veterinarian, physiotherapist or an equine health professional, who might be able to help. When a horse resists through its back, it is a defensive reaction; generally, there is a reason for such a reaction. Resistance is one way to avoid being hurt or of being subjected to efforts that have a high cost for the horse and that it dislikes. When the back begins to work, it is normal that the horse increases its resistance. Once the muscles begin to free up, you will notice how they relax, and, little by little, those same muscles are able to show freedom of movement. GETTING THE BACK TO START WORKING For this musculature to work properly, it must be relaxed and tension free. Once this occurs, these muscles work due to their interaction. Stretching the neck muscles pulls on the back, putting these in a stretching position. The fact that these muscles are constantly stretched does not make them more elastic. Elasticity comes from varying the position in which the horse works—collected and lengthening—and from the relaxation of these muscles. Freedom of the top line allows movement to go through, causing the energy produced by the hind quarters to reach the hand. The capacity of the horse to bend laterally also gives a feeling of freedom of movement and it shows the flexibility of its top line. On the other hand, using the abdominal musculature strengthens the back. As with humans, when one has a strong abdomen, his/her back benefits from it; the back gains in support, and has the ability to curve and work with firmness. Therefore, working the back can be viewed lengthwise and laterally. To facilitate correct work, one should contemplate the plane frontback (collected-lengthening) and right and left. A last point is that it is also a good thing if the back has the ability to move up and down.

Working the back is shown from the lengthwise and lateral perspective.

To generate all of this movement in the top line, part of the work session should be spent doing gymnastics with the horse. What is meant by gymnastics? Leg yielding,

lengthening and shortening, bending the horse in general through flexions, circles with the croup to the outside and to the inside (of the circle), shoulder-in and headto-the-wall. To practice gymnastics, it is necessary to work in short, alternating movements, with a lot of variation in the position of the horse. The introduction of strides in piaffe at a more advanced stage is also beneficial when working the top line. A correct combination of these, with the introduction of pauses in the work, the adaptation to and individualization of the specific horse (What phase it is at? What problems does it have? What is the origin? What resources are available, etc.), analyzing its health and the advice of somebody who can help from below, is what, without a doubt, can lead to success in this truly complex matter of “going through.” ¡¡

PUREBRED SPANISH HORSE,

an ideal horse for Doma Vaquera

“The Purebred Spanish Horse is perfectly fit for Doma Vaquera. A horse must have heart, strength and of course, a desire to work, with which it advances daily thanks to the perseverance of its rider.”

TEXT: PEDRO URBINA PONCE

PUREBRED SPANISH HORSES have naturally extraordinary skills for Doma Vaquera: their movements are agile, harmonious and rhythmic. They are predisposed for collection and for turning sharply on their hindquarters. PREs have some most appreciated virtues which distinguish them from all other breeds; these virtues are the breed’s energetic, noble and docile personality, without overlooking their resistance when working. Based on my own experience, I can state that PREs have a good mouth, are responsive to the rider’s aids, very obedient and have an ability and eagerness to learn. Their noble spirit, tolerance, hardiness, good heartedness and bravery make them an excellent horse for Doma Vaquera. I openly declare my love for PRE horses; I recognize the fact that over

the years and to date, the breed, has given me a lot of satisfaction and unforgettable moments in the arena. From among the many Purebred Spanish Horses I have ridden, Guapo XXIV, bred and owned by Yeguada Lanzarote, was the ANCCE Cup Champion for Doma Vaquera in the Novice category back in 2008; two years later, he was the Champion in the Experienced Category. It was then that I realized that this horse would be a future promise in Doma Vaquera. And that is exactly what happened; he became one of the best horses in Andalusia and in Spain. In 2014, he placed fourth at the Andalusian Championship and earned Bronze in the King’s Cup; unfortunately, an injury hindered his participation in Spain’s National Championship. No doubt, he would have placed among the top three. 53

Currently, this beautiful steed is retired. He is living at liberty, for the enjoyment of children thanks to his personality and noble spirit. In the eyes of enthusiasts and Doma Vaquera judges, he has been a very successful horse. The current list of up-and-coming PRE horses in this sport includes two horses that I am lucky enough to ride. One is Hortelano LXXV, ANCCE Cup Champion at SICAB 2015. He is a young horse that still needs to perfect certain exercises, but he is promising and willing. The other is a sibling of Guapo XXIV, named 54

Guapo JFR. He too was Champion at SICAB 2015 in the Experienced Horse category. He boasts the same characteristics as his brother, with their typical willingness to work; he is a real pleasure to work with and train. Both horses are owned by Yeguada Lanzarote. I must also mention other Purebred Spanish Horses that have a place in Doma Vaquera history, such as triple Champion of Spain, Centenaria. This horse, ridden by JoaquĂn Olivera PeĂąa at the National Championship, was the winner in 1980, 1981 and 1982. Aleada, the

He was an extraordinary horse and I have fond memories of him. He arrived from Lanzarote in 2002 to become the SICAB Champion that year. Then there was Galeón, from the Francisco Lazo stud farm that pushed me into the arena thanks to his character. Others include Albero, Duque LXXIX, Guapo XXXII, etc. Finally, I would say to all PRE

breeders with horses that are appropriate for Doma Vaquera to cherish them. Each has its own characteristics, but they fulfill each and every need: noble spirit, movements and resistance for work. Proof of this is that there is evermore PRE blood in Doma Vaquera horses, because this facilitates their training. They are less temperamental; they are nobler and laid back. Undoubtedly, they are a pure satisfaction for riders. Purebred Spanish Horses have given and continue to provide joy and success in this sport. ¡¡ 55

conference included changes in the 2016 legislation as well as other essentials relative to the PRE Stud Book, the removal of a horse due to death or sales, the obligations of buyers, registrations within the legal timespan and registrations after the deadline, etc. This was followed by a report about the Breeding Program and the various aspects covered, the amount of data that is acquired and that science is now able to genetically know each of the possibilities of any one of the horses assessed. Undoubtedly, genetics are the root of any stud farm and a resource that breeders depend upo n to improve their bloodlines when obtaining quality products. Likewise, Azor explained the categories and the interpretation of the breeding stock catalogs. These catalogs provide information about genealogy, with specifics for genetic and reproductive data for each horse included. Each catalog works as an orientation tool to obtain results in future progeny. ASOCAMAN-PRE greatly appreciated the presence of the attendees and thanked the assistant director of the PRE Stud Book, who is also responsible for the Breeding Program, for sharing his knowledge on these topics. ¡¡

international associations DENMARK

Danish Association

S

ince the first PRE stallion was imported to Denmark back in 1991, the PRE population has increased to approximately 550 PRE horses today. The association was founded in 1994; today, it has 125 members, primarily owners of PRE horses. Most of them are riders, but we have about twelve active breeders, who increase the population with—on average—20 PRE foals per year. In the beginning, most of the PRE’s were dapple grey, but today we have a wide variety of colors. And this year, for the first time, two of our breeders had two palominos and one pearl. Over the years, breeders have imported new horses for breeding, looking for a good quality in character, morphology and movements. They have succeeded in all these parameters. We are looking forward to seeing these offspring at Denmark’s annual national ConformationFunctional Competition (DAMOCHA). This year, the event will be held from the 26th to the 28th of August at Team Cabe in Ringsted. It will be judged by Conformation Judge Ignacio Candau and Functionality Judge Teresa Alonso-Miñon. Charlotte Eichel Larsen, the Association President, explained that during the crisis, we have all suffered at the European level, the breeding sector in general, and more specifically, Purebred

Spanish Horses, which have had serious marketing problems. “Finally, it seems that business is going the right direction. The PRE herd is growing as are the number of active stud farms.” This fact is confirmed by the growing number of changes of ownership registered at the PRE Stud Book office. “Most of the horses sold are bred in Denmark,” Larsen continued. Currently, Denmark is demanding horses that are trained and ready to ride, generally for pleasure. “Our aim is to provide Danish-bred riding horses rather than importing them all,” she concluded. In Denmark, PRE horses can be seen in an ample variety of disciplines. It is common place to see riders with Purebred Spanish Horses in show jumping, carriage driving, stunt horses in theaters,

T

he United States PRE Association announces the promotion of Tanya Duffey to the role of Executive Director. She has a degree in Architecture from Florida Atlantic University and is a member of the Association since 2012, when the Miami operations moved to Wellington, Florida. Since her arrival, and prior to her current post, Tanya Duffey played an important role in the successful management of PRE Stud Book services since ANCCE, the main PRE Association, decided to count on USPRE to handle Stud Book management to service more than 1000 breeders and almost 700 members in the United States and Canada. Joan Marck, USPRE Executive Director for seven years, will continue as a consultant while

TREC (a combination of long distance riding and agility), Working Equitation, shows and of course, Dressage. “These country fairs are a fantastic way to exhibit and show our beautiful breed, and they are always very popular,” the President explained. The exhibited horses are judged by experts and compete in various competitions for the awards as Best Stallion of the year, Best Broodmare, Best Foal, Best 2-year-old etc. At the latest fair, held just last month, broodmare Golosa CXIX and her colt Favorito DRK, owned by Ms. Anna Vestergaard and bred by Vicente Antoni Casanova was the winner. This mare achieved 24 points, which is the highest score given at these fairs. Recently, the association held its annual

serving as a volunteer to the organization. She states that the Association, in recent years, has enjoyed outstanding growth. “We began with a small office of one person to today’s staff of four, managing the paperwork to offer PRE horse breeders and owners a wide range of services.” Kimberly Boyer, former president of the USPRE Board of Directors, stated, “The success of USPRE is primarily due to Tanya’s ability to work with our breeders, to coordinate the massive details required to manage the Studbook, and to her quick grasp of the overall picture. Current Board President, Betsy Ketcham, agrees: “Whenever breeders have a question, Tanya has an answer, the correct answer. ¡¡
