For an even greater ANCCE Another edition of SICAB has concluded, and I would like to acknowledge my appreciation to everyone, on my own behalf as well as those on the Organizing Committee for the assistance and collaboration received from breeders, who are the driving force behind this event. Likewise, the judges must be thanked in addition to the unconditional support of the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the various Commissions and the efforts of the ANCCE and PRE Stud Book staff and collaborators. Acknowledgments must be rendered to you all for successfully concluding this 26th edition of SICAB. Thank you!! It is time to summarize a year of ANCCE life. 2016 has been a very important year for the Association. There have been important changes in the Conformation Competition Rules, thanks to which a new draft of these Rules has been published. A Technical Committee of Judges has been created, as well as a PRE Judging Manual. In all truth, the implementation of such innovative projectsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;at least at the beginningâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;always creates doubts and uneasiness among breeders. However, I honestly believe that it is an ideal system that will take hold over time, especially once it has been put into practice. Just a few days ago, and incompliance with a presidential promise, the new Conformation Competition Rules and Regulations were published. This year, the opinions of breeders were included thanks to a survey questionnaire, the content of which assessed possible changes in the 2017 Rules. Likewise, the survey results were published and immediately incorporated into the Rules; these will be put into practice at the first competition of the New Year. I must admit that I was surprised by the response to this initiative; it is unusual that these consultations enjoy a significant response. Yet, this questionnaire clearly shows that competitions are the focus of attention for a significant number of breeders. From my post as President, I would like to renew my commitment to always listen to members, to try and incorporate most of your opinions into the rules. The allowances for sports are but one result; this endeavor was initially created by Manolo Novales Vasco almost 3 decades ago. It seems that breeding is moving more and more towards this area, and that is the reason why we consider it essential to economically promote the participation of PRE Horses in the various equestrian disciplines. In this season, I would like to reiterate my commitment of being available to each and every one of you to forward your opinions and contributions to the various governing bodies of ANCCE. Thanks to your collaboration, we all work towards making ANCCE greater and greater. This is precisely my greatest desire for 2017. I wish you the very best in this New Year.

SICAB enjoyed a movie-lovers edition

This year, ANCCE made the presentation of SICAB 2016 (the International PRE Trade Fair) a social event, open to all, including institutional representatives, sponsors, media managers and journalists, collaborating firms and breeders. The event was held at the Carriage Museum, home of the Royal Carriage Driving Club in Sevilla and an organization with close ties to ANCCE. Their venue was the backdrop for the presentation of the latest innovation for the 26th edition. Juan Tirado, the President of ANCCE presided over the event, together with Rafael Olvera--the General Manager of Agricultural Production and Animal Husbandry at the Andalusian Regional Ministry, Juan Carlos Cabrera--Alderman for Mobility, Safety and Major Festivities at the Sevilla City Hall, José Luis García-Palacios--Board Member at Caja Rural del Sur Savings & Loan (sponsor) and Jesus Rojas, the manager of FIBES. For the second consecutive year, SICAB hosted the World Purebred Spanish Horse Championship. This Conformation Final is another step in the internationalization of the event by incorporating a title that expands the boundaries of Spain. In addition to this, the ANCCE Cup Finals for Dressage, Doma Vaquera, Spanish High School, Carriage Driving and Show Jumping was also held, together with the Exhibition Competition, a Competition for Breeders, Sidesaddle riders and Traditional Carriage Driving. As a novelty, SICAB was dedicated Foro Ibero-americano de Ciudades (IberoAmerican Forum of Cities). This governmental body will be sharing information about and disseminating the virtues of the breed throughout the American continent over the next few years. There, eight meetings will be held with the most important authorities of America. Likewise, and for the very first time, Para-Equestrian Dressage

was incorporated into the competition program; this discipline has been an Olympic sport since 1996. This year saw the premiere of the 1st Learning Campus, where breeders, enthusiasts and professionals attended the various workshops and practical sessions covering a wide range of topics. The Equestrian Show titled “This is our Horse” honored the relevance of movies and Purebred Spanish Horses working in the world of movies. Landmark films were remembered, including Ben-Hur, El Cid, Troy and The Three Musketeers, among others. Alizée Froment presented a top-level international performance. The PRE (Purebred Spanish Horse) Awards were granted to distinguished people and ambassadors of breed during the show, thus making it a major social event. Winners of the PRE Awards included the magazine HOLA (PRE Magnificence Award), bullfighter Juan José Padilla (PRE Courage Award), journalist Juan Ramón Lucas (PRE Expression Award), Food Bank of Sevilla (PRE Noble Spirit Award), actors Antonio Velázquez and Carlos Pereira (PRE Art Award), Cayetano Martínez de Irujo (PRE Spanish High School Award) and Ainhoa Arteta (PRE Cadence Award). ¡¡

The event was more international than ever before! And so it was at this 26th edition of the International Purebred Spanish Horse Fair (SICAB), organized in Sevilla (Spain) from the 16th to the 20th of November by the National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association (ANCCE). Compared to previous years, the statistics had a downward tone, with 250 horses entered from 112 stud farms. Noteworthy were the increased number of international stud farms that travelled to Sevilla to enjoy the event. The organizers welcomed delegations and breeders from the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Switzerland, among others…; 15% of the participants were internationals.

Functionality was the responsibility of Miguel Morales Cobos and Teresa Alonso-Miñon Agut. This year, the number of stud farms seeking the most prestigious award --Best Breeder Award-was reduced to four. Four breeders presented examples of their dedication and years of selection and breeding: Yeguada Andic, Mª Fernanda de La Escalera, Hermanos Vara Muñoz Casillas and Mater Christi. With a difference of four points in the overall score (14.333), Mater Christi retained its title as World’s Best Breeder for a second consecutive year, while Mª Fernanda de La Escalera was Reserve with a score of 10.333 points.

Second place in Section 5, Quieta AC, owned by Yeguada AC. Four was the magic number, as there were the same number of stud farms presenting horses with their own brand as well as that of others to compete for the World’s Best Exhibitor Award. These were Juan José Montes, Albert Boya, Yeguada Trujillo and Yeguada SR4. The title as World’s Best Exhibitor was for an American breeder, Yeguada Trujillo, with a total of 15.333 points. ADULT CHAMPIONS Among the World Champion contenders were the first place winners of Sections 8, 10 and 12. Contending the title were Resuelto Cen (winner in Section 8, bred and owned by Yeguada Centurión), Vagabundo XX (owned by Antonio Durán Altimira, bred by Yeguada Can Maynou and winner of Section 10) and a horse from Yeguada JJ Montes, renowned Fer Gallardo (Champion in Section 12, and bred by Yeguada Ferrero). was a gray horse, Vagabundo XX that was declared World Stallion Champion. Vagabundo XX is a son of Vagabundo XII (Digital-Corzo IV) out of Zafira XIX (Batanero VII-Mañoso II). With only two participations at Conformation Competions --at Equigal and Fericab-the judges were charmed by the paces of this beautiful horse, particularly his groundcovering, four-time walk. His breed quality, especially head, neck and other body regions were equally outstanding. The judges unanimously declared Foco IV as Reserve Stallion Champion. This horse, owned by Albert Boya Abadía and bred by Yeguada Los Retamales CC, placed second in Section 10. Mare Champion at SICAB 2013 and 2014, and Reserve Mare Champion in 2015, Panadera LVIII, bred and owned by Mª Fernanda de la Escalera, earned the title as World Mare Champion. mare is a very complete horse, with well-defined breed quality, extremely beautiful, expressive, and feminine with a very good upper line. When it comes to her movements, her length of stride and the impulsion of her hindquarters are outstanding. She descents from a lineage of champions; her sire, Zoilo IX, was the 2006 Spanish National Colt Champion, while her dame, Jaquetona XVI, earned a number of medals in the section for cobras; she is also a direct descendant of the Ganador VIII, sire of Ermitaño III, the only horse to earn the stamp as Elite Breeding Stock. Undoubtedly, this is a mare that defines the PRE as a breed, and in every sense of the word; she offers conformational beauty and functionality of movement. The title as Reserve World Mare Champion was disputed among Mavileña DAV, Solitaria XXXIII and XM Vinatera. XM Vinatera, a gray from Yeguada Andic and bred by Miguel Bohórquez, was proclaimed Reserve World

During the five competition days, the quality of the paces seen in the horses goes to show the promising future of the PRE as a breed. The mechanics of the walk must be highlighted; the four-time walk was impressive, the trot symmetric, springy and regular. Then there was the canter; the horses cantered three rounds without interrupting the pace to maintain a correct rhythm. Primavera MZ, Educado de JJ, Querida JF, Babel de Ramos, Nibea, Simpatic La Devesa, Atrevida MIBXI, Atrevido Mango, Noia IV and Ensueño XVI were the winners in their respective Sections, all of which sought the Best Movement Award. Having gone twice around the arena, in other words, down two long-sides at walk, several times around at canter,

as well as down two longsides at trot, Atrevido Mango was crowned with the title of World Champion of Movement at SICAB. This handsome bay, bred and owned by Yeguada Andic, placed third in Section 10. The rivalry was obvious in this section as the 2016 World Stallion Champion was also Champion of this section while second place when to the 2016 World Champion of Movement. The quality of paces in the horses from Yeguada Andic is impressive; heir trot shows great suspension, elevation and strength with pronounced flexion of the hindquarter joints. The Reserve World Champion of Movement was for a bay mare named Primavera MZ.

The changing positions of horses in Functionality proved that even the slightest error takes a toll. Once the test concluded in the arena, Ulés Vdos moved up five positions in the general roster. Thanks to this, he became the World 27

Functionality Champion with a score of 20.455 in the hands of Andalusian rider José Antonio García Mena. The horse from Finca Lo Tacón descends from Impaciente II (Talismán X Fumana), and is one of the precursors promoting PRE horses in international arenas. Recently, he earned the stamp as Elite Breeding Stock. His height, strength and well defined upper line are but a few of the traits inherited from his sire Ules Vdos. As Reserve World Functionality Champion, Fer Gallardo was an obvious candidate as SICAB Champion. This year, the World Stallion Champion was once again elusive. After the Functionality Test, ridden by Carlos Pinta, this horse placed fourth, to become the Section 12 Champion. Fer Gallardo is a magical charm for Yeguada JJ Montes; he has earned the stud farm an infinite number of awards. This horse boasts a

well-defined breed quality and quality paces; his battle for the top awards was unceasing.

Second place in Section 11, XM Vinatera, owned by Yeguada Andic and bred by Miguel Bohórquez.

YOUNGSTOCK CHAMPIONS Having covered the adults competing in the arena, it is time to move on to the newcomers; the colts and fillies that will be in the immediate future of PRE history. Among the contenders for the title as World Filly Champion, the winner and runner-up in Sections 3 and 5--which corresponds to two and three year old fillies--were Primavera MZ, Hechura Mater, Rociera Mango and Quieta AC.

When it came to the bottom line, there was no doubt about the winner. Primavera MZ was chosen as World Filly Champion. Bred and owned by María Zara Pérez, this bay mare dazzled everyone thanks to her wonderful paces. Only two and half years old, Primavera MZ 29

has been invincible throughout the season. Undoubtedly, all eyes must be on her at future editions. Reserve World Filly Champion was for Hechura Mater. Another favorite in the Youngstock category was Yucatán de Ramos. It was the finishing touch for a season full of success when the horse was proclaimed World Colt Champion. Bred by Yeguada Torrehermosa and owned by Yeguada SR4, he was the winner in the section reserved for 3-year-olds, with a total score of 76.960. The sire of this horse is none other than Utrerano VII (sire of world famous Fuego de Cárdenas) out of Harmonía IV. Most of the bloodline stems from renowned Yeguada Romero Benítez. His excellence, height, breed quality, movements, expressiveness and beauty indicate that a bright future awaits him at forthcoming events.

His most direct rival was Hebreo Bio from Yeguada Bionest. This horse competed against Educado de Azahar for the title as World Colt Champion. Finally, the judges unanimously granted Hebreo Bio a total score of 18.000, thus making him the Reserve World Colt Champion. COBRAS

When presenting cobras, whether three or five, specific criteria are used. These include movements (only walk and trot), manageability, uniformity of coat color, height, conformation and breed characteristics. Competing with a 3-mare cobra is essential when seeking the Best Breeder Award. All in all, there were eleven participants; a gray, 3-mare cobra with Estampa Mater, Emblema Mater and Distinguida Mater from Yeguada Mater Christi was granted the victory in Section 13 (79.100). In the last Section of the Championship, Section 14, there were only two participants.

The 5-mare black cobra from Yeguada Mª Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera, was the winner with 72.850 points. Upon proclaiming the Special Awards, these horses dropped the curtain on SICAB and its 26th edition. It was an edition that summarized a year of hard work, nervousness, emotions, expectations, dreams and goals accomplished. This event displays the daily efforts of breeders and the work of presenters as they train Purebred Spanish Horses day after day. SICAB motivates breeders as it is a reference for all of those interested in PRE horses. It is also a showcase that presents the development of the breed and a looking glass for many stud farms when deciding the bloodline for future horses. This second edition of the World Championship at SICAB was truly a successful edition. ¡¡

One of the novelties at this 26th edition of SICAB was the incorporation of Para-equestrian riders. Adapted or paraequestrian dressage has been a Para-Olympic sport since 1996. In Spain, this specific discipline has been included since 2009. Due to the many athletes with a variety of disabilities, there are five different categories or grades, based on the type of impairment. With a total of three participants, one in each category (Test II, Test III and Test IV), the winner of Test II was Mª Eugenia González riding Animoso XXXI, bred and owned by Yeguada La Cartuja. On the first day of the competition, this female rider performed a very harmonious test to correctly execute the route, which included a particularly outstanding three-loop serpentine, gaining in excess of 70% (71.765%). On the second day, a series of mistakes decreased her score by 10 points: lack of regularity at trot and when executing pirouettes at walk that were excessively large led to a lower score of 61.785%. In the next category, the only participant was Roberto Aguilera who averaged 62.763% on the first day in Test III. He rode Jalón XIV, a horse bred by José Antonio Olivas Agustín and owned by Roberto Aguilera Donoso. He increased his score by two tenths (64.340%) on the second day as his mount expressed better rhythm without rushing. When it came to the two track exercises, such as shoulder in, there was a lack of bend; the trot-canter and canter-trot transitions were rather abrupt but the rider proved his worth when correcting errors. Noteworthy was the rider’s seat when performing exercises at sitting trot. Last, but not least was Mercedes Arreciado. She too was a lone participant in Test IV (60.952%) riding Killo V, owned and bred by Juan Fernandez-Layos Rubio. This test includes two-track exercises at trot and canter, such as quarters-in and shoulderin. Compared to other categories, this test is more demanding. In this case, the beautiful black horse was slightly irregular and rushed its rhythm at trot on the first day, but improved on the second. This was seen in the two tenth increase in the final score earned (62.381%). Including Para-equestrian sports in the SICAB program proves that their importance is growing, although at a slow, yet steady rate. Admirable best describes these riders when presenting their various tests together with their faithful equine companions. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Dressage

This year, the big change in Juniors was that they performed in Pavilion three, the same as all the other Dressage classes. Unquestionably, this significant change demonstrates the importance of t Juniors are for ANCCE. It is truly impressive who watch children between 9 to 19 handle their horses with no problems, in an arena full of noises, lights and, above all, shadows that distract their mounts. First place in the U12 (Alevines) category went to the Mariana Varón riding Henares I, owned by Yeguada el Principado de España and bred by Yeguada La Angostura, with a total of 68.784%. Their tests on both days were correct, perhaps with a slightly unstable contact, but the canter was cadenced and self-carriage. For Ainhoa Vera, her performance with Mosquetero VII was the icing on the cake after a fantastic season, to be proclaimed U14 Champion in the ANCCE CUP. Spectacular Champion of Aragon and Bronze medal winner, both with the team at the Europeans and as an individual at the Nationals, this pair were the undisputed leaders throughout the competition. Six points overall ahead of the second prize winner, and with 70.167% in the first round, Ainhoa rode two really harmonious tests, with the horse really well in the hand. Certainly, this partnership is promising and a combination to keep an eye on. The test for U18 Juniors 0* can be difficult for riders, especially in the canter exercises. Clara Dauset riding Ovalo ARB (67.698%), bred by Yeguada San Antonio and owned by Yeguada Barcelona Horses, were the champions. They were the winners in the first round of this class. However, on the second day, they dropped down to second place, due to a small error in the canter, along with a very rushed trot, which led to their losing points. Regarding the U18 test, which includes exercises on two tracks and simple changes, Sonia Ponce riding Róbalo finished their Sunday as Champions in this category, with an average of 66.625%. They performed some really flowing half-passes and the horse was nicely in the hand; however the horse did break his medium trot across the diagonal in the preliminary test. for Juniors. Jesús Esteban Cornejo riding Mío II, bred by Ignacio Bravo Martínez and owned by the Real Maestranza Caballería de Ronda, was the winner, with a total of 62.105%. This rider had problems with the series of flying changes on both days. The trot exercises on two tracks were performed well, but with a slight loss of rhythm on several occasions. In summary, this year’s change of location to the main competition arena was really positive to motivate the Juniors for future years. Another Important novelty was the presentation of the Plan for the Development of Junior Sports under the leadership of renowned rider José Daniel Martín Dockx. The winners in each category will receive an invitation to join this plan throughout 2017. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Dressage

The undisputed winner of the test for 4-year-olds was Poeta de Susaeta ridden by Guillermo Ayala, bred and owned by Yeguada Susaeta, with a final total of 82.100%. Exceeding the 80% barrier, both in the preliminary and final round, the judges rewarded the quality of his paces. This horse’s trot was very regular, rhythmical, and elastic, with a great deal of suspension, giving the impression of natural balance with freedom of his shoulders and lightness. His walk, which was awarded 8.5, is certainly his best pace as he perfectly marks the four-time and covers as much ground as is possible without rushing, with a consistent regularity and lack of tension. This horse is training within the ANCCE Plan for the Development of Junior Sports, and is one of the combinations that we must follow at future events. With 76.800%, Ulterior Pi ridden by Juan Lecina, owned by Yeguada AC and bred by Fernando Pique Llusa, came in second. This horse seemed a bit tense in the preliminary test, which caused his rider problems with both the contact and keeping him well in the hand. By the second day, he had improved substantially to perform a great test, with an outstanding, very rhythmical, ground-covering trot. With a score of 8.0, his extended walk was one of the highlights of the final test, as the horse was really using his entire topline and was free of tension. Third on the podium was Resuelto Cen, a horse bred and owned by Yeguada Centurión, and ridden by young Antonio Verdejo. This grey horse has a very expressive trot, with great impulsion and covering a lot of ground, a well-defined 4-time walk and a canter in which the transitions between collection and extension are clearly marked. On the second day his neck was less tense, which greatly improved the contact. His final average was 75.200 %. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Dressage

The proclamation of the Champions in this category was exciting right up to the very last minute. Counter canter is introduced in this test, where the judge assesses the balance of the horse, its ability for self-carriage and its capacity for transferring its weight onto its hindquarters. Perdido Cad, a chestnut owned and bred by Yeguada Mendoza Cadema, was proclaimed World Champion. With the best score for canter (8.0) in the preliminary test, his rider, Mª del Carmen Montes, rode a very harmonious test, with a rhythmical and ground-covering trot, a great deal of impulsion and a well-defined walk. His canter was regular and very well-balanced, which could best be seen on the 20 meter counter canter circles. Their final total was 77.200%. At one point, everyone thought that Quincallo de Indalo, owned and bred by Yeguada El Indalo, would win. On the first day (preliminary), he finished on an astonishing 80.000%. However, in the final, he unfortunately dropped down to fourth place. This horse’s trot is very electric and explosive in his forehand; nevertheless, he had a few small irregularities in canter, both in the preliminary and in the final, which lost him considerable points. In the end, this horse was proclaimed Reserve World Champion in the 5 year-old category, with an average of 77.000%. Only a few decimals behind, with 76.700%, Solano de Trujillo, a horse owned by Yeguada Trujillo and bred by Yeguada Torreluna, achieved third place in this class. On both days his walk was clearly 4-time, covering a lot of ground and free of tension, thus gaining the best score for this pace (8.5 and 7.70). With a very balanced canter and good self-carriage and strength, this horse sadly lost marks for his excessive speed in the extended trot. For many years there has been a great deal of discussion regarding the aptitude of the PRE Horse for top level competition. All the same, the evidence speaks for itself: PREs have achieved the highest placings in toplevel international competition. Here we have three great horses, all of which could bring a great deal of happiness in the future. ¡¡

5-YEAR-OLDS First place in the category for 5-yearolds, Perdido Cad, bred and owned by Yeguada Mendoza Cadema.

The test for 6-year-olds includes lateral work, work on two tracks and flying changes. From a total of ten participants, the Champion in this category was Joya FS. Ever since she started in dressage, this young mare-owned and bred by Yeguada Arroyomonte--has stood out in all categories; she was the 5-year-old Champion at SICAB last year. Over the two days of competition, she displayed three great paces: an electric trot, with a lot of quality, showing off her truly flexible back and great engagement behind; a ground-covering, cadenced walk, clearly in 4-time and thus covering the greatest possible amount of ground; and a bouncy, uphill canter with good natural balance. Technically, the two-track work was performed well; however, there were one or two small problems in the flying changes (two-time and short behind). Keita II, a horse owned by Alfonso Gormaz Navarro and bred by José Antonio Olivas Agustín was second place with a total average of 74.500%. He was a little closed in the neck, but with a really good attitude and three regular paces. His extended trot was not rushed and covered a great deal of ground. There was slight tension in the rein-back in the preliminary; nonetheless, it was a perfect four-time and he lost no regularity in the steps. There was a jockeying of positions over the two days with two horses tying for third place on 73.700%. On the one hand, Dado MB--owned and bred by Antonio Martos Bermúdez and ridden by José Antonio Vázquez Quintero--achieved second place on the first day, but dropped to ninth on the second. This test had a series of faults right from the beginning; he starting off with a barely perceptible immobility in the halt on the center line, as well as some irregularities in the trot, losing his rhythm and some badly performed changes. Something to highlight is that, independently of the irregularities in his trot, this pace was really ground-covering, with a great deal of strength and impulsion. On the other hand was Fiti de Amtuna, a horse bred by Adrodiego and owned by Andrea Martínez. Last year, this horse was Reserve Champion among 5 year-olds. Juan Manuel Muñoz rode two very correct tests, with a very flowing and most outstanding rhythmical trot; however, there was a lack of consistency in the contact. Moreover, in the final, the horse had one or two problems in the changes. ¡¡

6-YEAR-OLDS First place in the category for 6-yearolds, Joya FS, bred and owned by Yeguada Arroyomonte.

The test for 7-year-olds includes exercises very similar to those in the Prix St Georges, but with specific aspects when it comes to the judging; the exercise is scored in the traditional manner, but, at the same time, the quality of the paces are also scored (in the same way as any other test reserved for young horses). The final score is the average of the technical scores and those granted for the quality of the paces. Exercises such as counter-changes, semi-pirouettes and a series of changes all prepare for the Prix St Georges. On the first day of competition, the top three horses broke the famous 70% barrier. These horses retained their positions in the final, with the overall winner being Juncal LXXXVII ridden by Alfonso Gormaz Torcal, owned by Alfonso Gormaz Navarro and bred by José Antonio Olivas Agustin (74.0884). Second place went to the bay, Lucero CLXXXVIII, owned and bred by Yeguada El Romerito (71.506%). Third on the podium was Mayordomo Caldero II, owned and bred by Ganadería El Caldero (69.521%). Remember that Juncal LXXXVII was Reserve Champion in the ANCCE CUP in 2014. On both the days of competition, this beautiful gray horse displayed a really expressive trot, with great freedom in the shoulders; perhaps the best that we have seen during the whole test. His walk was clearly in 4-time and he had a really cadenced canter. Technically, the horse was a slightly closed in the neck, which prevented him from using his top-line and he was a little tense in the walk. Maintaining the same order in the scores, Lucero CLXXXVIII with rider Juan Jesús López, performed, over the two days, two correct tests, but with some problems in the changes and a slight lack of straightness. The elasticity and rhythm of his trot are clearly one of this horse’s strong points. Perhaps the only objection was that he wasn’t always well in the hand, as, on certain occasions, he was obviously closed at the poll. His lovely uphill canter was very good. A lack of flow in the changes and an unstable contact were some of the faults in this combination. Even so, the quality of this horse’s paces is very good. Both tests were rhythmical and very elegant. Just below them on the podium was Mayordomo Caldero II; this horse failed to reconfirm last year’s second place in the category for 6-year-olds; this year he took the bronze medal. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Dressage

This dressage level improves every year and is an audience favorite. As the new Champion of Andalusia at this level, José Antonio García Mena with Bajel del Valdesol, a horse owned by Yeguada Valdesol and bred by Gonzalo Velenzuela, broke the 71% barrier on both days to perform two great tests with quality in all the exercises. The flying changes were very springy and uphill, and the pirouettes were clearly marked, with regards to the beats of the hind hooves. With wonderfully melodic music, well-adjusted to the various changes of rhythm, they were crowned Champions, on Sunday, with a total of 72.706%. Trailing by two points was Annabelle Collins from Barbados who currently resides in Barcelona. She performed two harmonious tests riding Joyero VG-owned by Yeguada Barcelona Horses and bred by Yeguada Velasco-González--to be proclaimed Reserve Champions at this level, with an average of 70.775%. What stood out most about this beautiful, tall bay horse was the quality of his trot. On both days, his medium trot was a little rushed, but the two track exercises were performed well, with good rhythm and great impulsion. There were times in the changes when the horse’s hind feet were too close, but the rider was able to overcome these errors and gained points with some well performed pirouettes. Napoleón Candau, the star of the Candau Stud Farm, was only a few decimals away from second place. Remember that in previous years at SICAB this horse reached the podium in both 2014 as Reserve Champion 7-year-old and 2015 as Reserve Champion in the Prix St Georges. Napoleón Candau is most outstanding for his elegant and elastic trot, the amount of ground covered in his lateral work, as well as his shoulder-in and half pass. To the rhythm of Piano Guys at canter, he had a few problems with certain exercises. Nevertheless, he performed three-time changes on a straight line and four-time changes of a 20 meter circle, which were clean, big and flowing. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Dressage

Year after year, the Grand Prix (GP) increases in importance within the Dressage categories. This year, the winner of the top test in Dressage was a lady. The queen of both the GP and the Freestyle was Belén Bautista riding a son of Evento. With an entrance of maximum difficulty, performing two-time changes, the Andalusian rider charmed the audience with her freestyle. Along with Fenol II, the pair danced to the sound of Flamenco music, with a really springy and energetic passage standing out. The canter pirouettes were the weak point of this combination, being very large, with little collection and taking little weight on the hindquarters. Over both the days the horse appeared to be somewhat nervous in the arena, but he knew what to do and, above all, the qualities of the rider allowed us to see what a great combination they are. sTheir final average was 71.063%. There was dual of Titans between two great riders for second and third place. In the GP, both tied on the same score, so it was the scores for the combination that finally allowed Claudio Castilla with Ícaro MG to win. However, on the following day, the Freestyle, the top test in Dressage, the positions were reversed, with Víctor Álvarez coming second (70.595%). This season, Víctor Álvarez with his inseparable companion, Curiosos JLE, owned and bred by Yeguada José Luis de La Escalera de La Escalera, have entered an arena on very few occasions, as the horse has been out of commission following an operation for colic. The most significant of these was the Spanish Championships, in which they came tenth. On GP day, the horse was somewhat tense in his contact, complicating matters for his rider when it came to performing the exercises. As a Master of the musical tests, Víctor performed a very rhythmical test, with a high degree of difficulty, which increased as it went on, culminating in a double canter pirouette at X followed by two-time changes performed on a 20 meter circle in the center of the arena. Closing the podium, with a total average of 69.533% and very little experience at this level, Ícaro MG, owned by Hierro MG ESP and bred by Yeguada Candau, performed a very expressive trot, but with the hindquarters a little behind and a slight problem with the beat of the hind hooves in the piaffe. Remember that it is this horse’s first year in GP; last year he was proclaimed 7-year-old Champion. The other winners risked a little more in their choreography, while Claudio veered on the side of safety, performing the exercises in a simpler manner. The music was very cohesive, both in trot and canter. ¡¡

BEST BREEDER

Twelve breeders fought for this prize, right up to the final. This year, with a total of 101 points, Yeguada Candau has been awarded the prize for Best Breeder in Dressage. It presented three horses taking part in this award: Napoleón Candau, second place in the ANCCE CUP in the Prix St Georges category, Ícaro MG, owned by Hierro MG ESP but bred by Yeguada Candau, and Urdidor Candau, who took fifth place in the Prix St Georges. Only five points behind and in second place was Yeguada Arroyomonte. This stud farm participated with two mares (Jara FS and Joya FS), together with a stallion (Isleño FS in the top level, GP). Third place went to the breeder José Antonio Olivas Agustín, with a total of 77 points, earned by his horses Keita III and Juncal LXXXVII. When it comes to conformation, one of the stud farms with the most Spanish National Champions, both stallions and mares, is Yeguada Candau. After many years reaping awards, Ignacio Candau has finally set his objectives on sports. Those horses competing in dressage arenas and that have been outstanding-– such as Africano LVIII, Babieca and Napoleón–-provide us with a glimpse of his achievements in sports when promoting the Purebred Spanish Horse for Dressage. ¡¡

Coinciding with SICAB, the ANCCE Cup for Spanish High School was held, as has become traditional. This discipline is one of the most interesting and one that motivates enthusiasm among Purebred Spanish Horse fans. This year, there were tests for young horses, in other words, 4, 5 and 6 year old horses. Long rein level was the novelty this year. Of course, the three standard levels—Medium, Advanced and Superior were also included. The various tests were exciting, which is why the stands in Pavilion 2 were full of Spanish High School professionals and others from similar disciplines, as well as a large group of enthusiasts. Undoubtedly, Spanish High School is steadily growing year after year. In the test for 4-year-old horses, first place went to the only participant, Ezequiel León riding BEN Canastero (65.000%), owned by Ganadería Rubiales Lozano and bred by Benabad Cortés. In the 5-year-old category, the winner was Jornalero XVI (69.800%). Owned by Yeguada El Yunque and ridden by David Vazquez, it attained the highest score among the younger horse categories. Maximo XX (67.500%), ridden by Alvaro Maldonado and owned by Yeguada Hnos. Maldonado Marrón, was the winner in the 6-year-old category. These three categories, which focus upon promoting greater participation of young horses, are greatly welcomed by breeders and riders. What is even more important, the level and quality of the participating horses surpassed all expectations of the judges. For older horses, there are other levels. In Medium Level, the gold was for Francisco Javier Tineo with Presumido CXII (67.770%); this horse was bred by its ridder and is currently owned by Stanley Paul Riley. In the Advanced Level, the highest score (69.661%) was earned by Alejandro Cadenas riding Ureo VII, owned by José Luis Montosa and bred by Francisco Santiago Ruiz. In the Superior Level, there is a free-style choreography accompanied by music for horses as of seven years of age. Toledano XXXI was brilliant; this horse is owned by Yeguada La Cartuja “Hierro del Bocado” and ridden by Manuel Rodríguez. They were granted the gold medal by scoring an average of 67.899%. Lastly, a new category was incorporated. In Long Reins, Senil (68.656%), guided by Juan Jose Verdugo and owned by Cria Caballar Military Stud Farm in Jerez, was the sole participant. Horse and guide were delightful; they thrilled the audience and were the perfect ending for this discipline. Once again, Spanish High School has harvested major success both in terms of audience and participation. ¡¡

SICAB kept its annual appointment with Doma Vaquera and held the ANCCE Cup Final for Doma Vaquera, in the categories for both Novice and Experienced horses. The event was held on Friday and Saturday morning, with massive attendance to fill the stands and all around the arena. Currently, Doma Vaquera is a discipline with an elevated number of enthusiasts, one where Purebred Spanish Horses are making a well-worthy place for themselves. As mentioned, the ANCCE Cup is held on two days, with the final score being the tally of points obtained by horse and rider in both tests. There were seven horses/riders in the Experienced category and eleven in Novice. J. Manuel Jurado (president), Inmaculada Robledillo, Javier Alapont (members-at-large) and Manuel Baena (Federation representative) made up the panel of judges for Experienced Horses. First place and Absolute Champion was Pedro Urbina Ponce with Hortelano LXXV; this chestnut stallion from the Juan Francisco Rosa Marrero stud farm earned a final score of 530.667 points. From the town of Villamanrique de la Condesa, horse and rider surpassed the high level we are already accustomed; they brought the very best of essential working dressage to Pavilion 2 at SICAB. Second place was for Oscar Bastos Vela and Eneas V, owned by Ganadería Alfredo Liñana and bred by Marcelino González Alfaro; they earned 508.667 points. This rider from Dos Hermanas entered the arena to give it all, especially the second day, as they were vying for silver. Completing the podium was Jaime Jiménez Díaz-Pescuezo riding Jerónimo Aldara, owned by Los Lelitos and bred by Campa La Selva. They earned 502.833 points. This latter rider is truly committed to the ANCCE Cup, as he participated in two different categories to earn bronze in both. In the test for Novice Horses, the President of the panel of judges was José Manuel Del Solar; he was accompanied by members-at-large Juan José Torrescusa and Juan José García Mora, with Manuel Baena Torres as de Federation representative. In this category, the winner was Juan Fernando Holgado Estrada riding Generoso de Avilés, a horse owned by Mulera Peñón de La Esquina and bred by Yeguada El Romerito; with a score of 390.667 points, horse and rider were outstanding in transitions and straightness. Second place, with 367.500 points, was Ricardo Navas Gutiérrez with the mare Gala de Fraile, owned by Aquilino Fraile García. She was the only mare

Third place went to a rider from El Viso de Alcor, aforementioned Jaime Jiménez Díaz-Pescuezo, who earned a score of 367.167 points with his horse Andaluz ANG V, owned by Hnos. Once again, the Purebred Spanish Horse Show became a meeting place for Carriage Driving; this event on a fixed course is the oldest in Spain. It is extremely challenging to have such facilities; for the most part, they are sectional when it comes to equine needs and limited due to available ground space and an excessive number of people and animals moving around the area. In summary, holding such an event is more than praiseworthy. There were fourteen participants. Once was a Young Horse contestant from Yeguada Cuevas Bajas; five competed in the Singles category, three in Pairs, and the remaining five in 4-in-hand. The winners, scores and categories are provided below. In Singles, first place was for Joaquín Rodríguez Calderón (110.76%), from Yeguada Rodríguez Calderón. Second place was for Antonio Repullo del Pino (121.86%), from Yeguada Repullo Anaya. Third place was for José Soltero Contreras (129.18%), from Yeguada Bionest. In Pairs, first place when to Juan José Romero García (101.57%), from Yeguada El Diabolo; second place was for Francisco Ballester Mallols (117.50%), from Yeguada Francisco Ballester, while third was for Emilio José Ávila Castellano (128.44%), from Yeguada Ávila Castellanos. In the category 4-in-hand, the winners were (in order): Llibert Calvet Martínez (117.19%), from Yeguada Andic, José Barranco Reyes (131.77%), from Yeguada Barranco Reyes, and Gregorio Aranda Lamas (149.86%), from Yeguada Aranda Lamas held the top three places. A Traditional Carriage Driving was held for the second consecutive year. This year, and for the very first time, this event earned international status due to the interest and the demand it sparked. Organized by ANCCE, under the management of the Royal Carriage Driving Club of Andalusia, 22 vintage carriages from Spain and France participated in the categories for Singles, Pairs, 4-in-hand and Coach. Once the winners were announced, trophies were granted in the arena to Sergio Vera (11.50), from Yeguada Joaquín Aranda Calderón, and Ramón Moreno de los Ríos (11.50), ex aequo (tied), in the Singles category; José Varo Garrido (5.83) in Pairs; Manuel González Pérez in 4-in-hand, and lastly, Gregorio Aranda Lamas in Coach. Both competitions were extremely successful and enjoyed a high level of participation. This is proof that the competition and elegance go hand in hand with Purebred Spanish Horses. ¡¡ 69

The ANCCE Cup for Show Jumping concluded successfully with the victor of PRE Odalisco III, an eight year old son of Bandolero LXVII and Odalisca IV, owned by Yeguada de La Cartuja (Hierro del Bocado) and ridden by Carlos Díaz Fernández. With this achievement horse and rider renew their 2015 championship title. This final included 17 participants in the category for adults, and eight in the category for children, all of which were Purebred Spanish Horses. In recent years, this discipline sparked greater expectation among both breeders and visitors. In the class for adults, and following the ANCCE Cup Rules for Show Jumping, two qualifying rounds were performed. This resulted in a tie among six horses. Odalisco II was the winner; he stopped the clock after 28.90 seconds. He continued to break the tie with five other horses, which were the only ones to perform the two qualifying rounds without any faults. The horses battling for a place on the winner’s podium, in addition to Odalisco III, included Gitano CY from Yeguada Colorín and ridden by Miguel Vázquez Muñoz-Repiso --they place second-- and Hilo IV, owned by Mª de la Nieves Hernández Nistal, bred by Yeguada El Yerro and ridden by Patricia Cuesta Hernández, who placed third in the final. The trajectory of breeders at the 2016 ANCCE Cup has been upwards to reach the final. Odalisco has been outstanding as the PRE with greatest success and the best results in the Eventing Competition, Dressage and Show Jumping. Coinciding with the class for Adults, space and time was reserved for younger riders, both U12 and U14. In this category, the winner was Juan Alonso Calvo riding Jairo VIII, owned by José Monrové Varilla and bred by Yeguada El Yunque. This rider performed three magnificent rounds and scored a brilliant victory. Écija PS, owned by El Raso bred by Pedro Sánchez and ridden by Cristina Serrano placed second, with Epona V from Yeguada Lido and bred by Antonio Jesus Borja Spinola, ridden by Paola Borja Pinto following suit. ¡¡

The equestrian show is one of SICAB’s identifying characteristics and a performance enjoyed by all. Annually, the show summons thousands of enthusiasts who don’t want to miss the acrobatics and performances by the best riders in the world. At the 26th edition of SICAB, the world of show business, and more specifically, movie lovers’ favorite scenes were reenacted with the show “This is our Horse.” Pavilion 3 became to backdrop for images and props from a number of films and TV series where Purebred Spanish Horses played more than decisive roles.
