Tirado Agudo President of ANCCE

We are on the right path

2

2017 ARRIVED JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO; it is a year in which I continue to be committed to satisfying ANCCE members after having recuperated the 700 member mark. This is an increase of more than 150 members since the current governing team took over the presidency of our Association. I AM WELL AWARE THAT the measures we are adopting may very well not be to the liking of many, but I am sure that nobody can accuse us of idleness. For the most part, 2016 has been dedicated to getting our house in order regarding such aspects as the development of Conformation Competitions. And in 2017, we want to lay the foundation for the latest reforms so that they become consolidated and stable, which is a guarantee for feasibility. LAST DECEMBER, THE NEW RULES & REGULATIONS WERE PUBLISHED. It is not a trivial matter to point out that for the first time in years, these rules see the light before the competition season begins. The renovated Rules & Regulations are sensitive to the opinion of breeders; all aspects covered in the survey sent to members were taken into consideration. JUDGES AND COMPETITIONS HAVE BEEN LISTED IN CATEGORIES FOR THE 2017 SEASON. The draw to select Judges for competitions in the first quarter of the year has already been held. In due course, a new survey will be sent out seeking the general opinion of the sector regarding competitions. I am convinced that complaining is useless. As a wise man once stated: “instead of protesting, propose a solution.” And that is exactly what we want to do; have a global opinion of the sector and implement all those solutions that are feasible to improve a dedicated system for the future. IF THERE IS SOMETHING I AM PROUD OF, IT IS THE COMMENTS I have heard regarding the judging at SICAB 2016. Logically, each breeder tells his or her own story, depending on the final results, but on this occasion, the generalized comment is that fairness and justice prevailed. That means we are on the right path: judges have been trained, there is a systematic control of their functions and resources have been created to facilitate their work. These aspects all mean that the system is clear. Now it is our obligation to consolidate and perfect the model, but always in tune with breeder sensitivity. APART FROM THE COMPETITIONS, which musters the interes≠t of many breeders, we are paying attention to other very important aspects, but always pondering how to help members. Thus, the first grants for sports have been created, and destined to helping PRE horses participate at competitions. Special recognition has been granted to those with brilliant results at national competitions, and even more so at international events. On the other hand, specific tests have been designed for the Young Horse Classic Series, which are also valid when qualifying for the ANCCE Cup, in which members may participate by paying a symbolic fee. I AM HOPEFUL WITH THESE NEW PROJECTS and I want to share that enthusiasm. The best way to achieve this objective is to request your help to continue to grow. Your opinion is important; it is the driving force the must move the actions of those governing ANCCE to correctly execute the objectives and challenges that our social mass presents before us.

To my good friend Miguel Ángel de Cárdenas

f 8

FOR YOU, MY FRIEND, who showed me the southern blue skies among Purebred Spanish stallions, mares and colts, standing still in the immensely green fields of this eternal countryside. To you, who showed me an unknown world; for me, one that is strong, with country manliness, peacefulness and passion. To you, who showed me what a stallion is and taught me the importance of genetics. To you, who gave me my first horse, and I dedicated it to my passion, which is vaquera riding. In the fields, I leaned about a good walk to the rhythm of a leather fly veil and the sound of stirrups coming and going with fantasy. To you, who after so many awards, honorary degrees and tributes, spoke to me with the voice of a friend.

To you, who gave me so much of that something that I share with you; it is my tribute at the conclusion of my perpetual love for horses. To you, with that intimidating character who sought pardon from me and my wife Maribel. To you, with your unbearable temper, that wasn’t always appreciated. My beloved friend, wait for me with God, so that when I arrive, we can continue to talk about the newborn foals. But when I tell you that I don’t like one, please don’t get angry. As I write these lines, I feel your presence alive in my memories and my heart beats faster. I’ll see you again in the blue pastures of immortal heavens… but always on horseback. ¡¡ Rafael Lemos

Renowned breeder Miguel Ángel de Cárdenas Osuna passes away

t

THE EQUESTRIAN WORLD is mourning for the death of one of its most renowned national PRE breeders: Miguel Ángel de Cárdenas Osuna. He was a founding member of ANCCE and associate of the Spanish Academy of Equestrian Studies. Throughout his life, he accumulated an endless number of awards and honors: Silver Horse from the Mexican Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association, Gold Horse from the city of Jerez de la Frontera, Honorary Member of ANCCE, Ecija’s most famous son, Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Science, Fine Arts and Humanities “Luis Vélez de Guevara” in Écija (Sevilla), PRE Opinion Forum Award, Honorary Member of Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders Association of Cordoba, etc. Undoubtedly, the best way that we as breeders could render him honors is appreciate and acknowledge his resilient commitment to Purebred Spanish Horse (PRE) breeding and their selection as a sport horse. This fact led him to be the owner of Fuego de Cárdenas, an Olympic success in Hong-Kong and London, as well as fourth place at the World Equestrian Games held in Kentucky. There,

together with Juan Manuel Muñoz, horse and rider performed one of the most brilliant stories in the world of equestrian sports. Cárdenas, a well-known lover of gray horses –although this need not be a decisive trait in his selection– he contributed to Purebred Spanish Horse history with great horses: Vasalla, Valido, Mástil, Ungido IV… leaving us with a legacy that will prevail for years to come. Currently, the descendants of these horses are spread world-wide. Today, his stallions are improvers and his mares have become part of new stud farms or to improve existing endeavors. From the very beginning, the efforts of Miguel Ángel de Cárdenas Osuna as a breeder were key when establishing this Association and developing Spain’s only native equine breed: The Purebred Spanish Horse. Thus, he has left us an eternal footprint for all those who are part of this passionate world. His exemplary values as a horse breeder and his exquisite professionalism, his generosity and the love shown to breeders and friends will forever remain in our memories. Rest in peace. ¡¡ Juan Tirado, president of ANCCE

For more than 40 years, ANCCE has worked to globalize the breed. Currently, we are achieving that goal; nevertheless, a long road still awaits us, with a number of challenges.

THE GOVERNMENT OF SPAIN HAS RECOGNIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF PRE HORSES AS THE ONLY NATIVE EQUINE BREED FOUND IN SPAIN 12

Bob Langrish

PUREBRED SPANISH HORSES can be seen in sixty-five different countries; thanks to the growing interest of emerging economies such as Russia and China, our beloved breed is found everywhere. One objective has already been attained, but we must continue to reinforce the image of our horse at the national level while marketing it better on the international scene: as a breed, the PRE is recognized as one of Spain’s icons and signs of identity. With this project–a tangible reality at the onset of 2017– the government and institutions of Spain have recognized the importance of the breed as it is the nation’s only native equine breed. This fact provides added value and a pattern of visible recognition for other countries wanting to have a PRE and our brand. It wasn’t that long ago when the situation, the press and breeders themselves, all painted a bleak picture of a sector that was limited by a crisis and socialeconomic adjustments. However, the seemingly rebound in world economy has positioned us as a clear example of a “solid brand.” If the task of creating what experts define as reputation or brand, a report, an isolated situation or hard times do not destroy a brand. Obviously, the crisis has swept away part of the sector, but at the image level, we have ridden out the storm. Every time that someone mentions those three words– Purebred Spanish Horse–the name of a country is evoked: Spain. That is why Marca España sees the PRE as a new version of Spain’s talent. In this sense, the High Commissioner for Marca España, states that “the characteristics of this breed

are a distinguishing mark of our culture, and a treasure that has to be preserved and shared.” Thus, the Purebred Spanish Horse is among the promotional projects of national policy and its image has been included in Marca España’s 2017 institutional video titled ‘Spain Everywhere’. “This video shows the involvement of Spain the world over through the eyes of its traditions and culture. One of the most beautiful animals in the world had to be included, as it is a horse that

is well known for its temperance, noble spirit and intelligence, resulting from centuries of vested efforts on behalf of breeders,” explains Espinosa de los Monteros, who is a PRE enthusiast well before spearheading this promotional project. The dizzying production shows Spain and Spaniards everywhere in the world through its culture, customs, cuisine, art, businesses, innovation and technology. It is an audiovisual review of places where Spain has left its mark. This is the very first time that Marca España shows the importance of Purebred Spanish Horse breeding in Spain and in the many countries worldwide where they are bred. Undoubtedly, this recognition by Marca España, both nationally and internationally, provides added value to an icon and hallmark value for Spain.

The video, presented by Alfonso Dastis, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and Espinosa de los Monteros, is being shared at international events, embassies and consulates throughout the world, and at state visits by the King. Certainly, this is one of the most important promotional activities undertaken for the benefit of our beloved PRE and the equine sector. To talk about Purebred Spanish Horses is to talk about a national symbol since the 16th century, and there are an endless number of equestrian paintings to prove it. For centuries, PRE horses were a sought after gift from the Spanish 16

crown; the breed was known as “the horse for Kings.” PRE horses have been the origin of many other breeds and the first equines on the American continent. It is the only animal species from Spain that is exported live to an endless number of countries. When it comes to the equine sector, Spain is a worldclass exporter. According to Espinosa de los Monteros, PREs are one of the most important and recognized equine breeds outside of Spain: “When abroad, to say that an equine is Purebred Spanish Horse is a symbol of undisputed excellence. Within our international promotion strategy,

the quality and excellence of the breed are key values; ANCCE is undertaking this effort more and more and with even greater efficiency. A Spanish horse is one the most beautiful animals in the world. Moreover, this equine breed is unique in that it is valuable on its own accord; what differentiates it is its work with the rider, its ability to learn dressage and its intelligence. Not only is the prestige of the breed important, as is the preservation of a horse with exceptional characteristics, but what the breed generates for Spain is equally important. In economic terms, this sector has a 5,000 million euro turnover. ANCCE continues to work towards attaining new objective in the promotion and recognition

POSITIVE ASSESSMENT & RECOGNITION FROM ‘MARCA ESPAÑA’ The confidence that Marca España has in ANCCE and the Purebred Spanish horse continues to grow. There are more and more proposals and unconditional support of promotional efforts. Since the initial contact, the brand quickly understood that the PRE is one of Spain’s greatest examples of history and national culture. Since then, it

has been generosity, service and collaboration to face the challenges and guarantee the promotion of PREs in Spain and abroad. “The work carried out by ANCCE to preserve and promote Spain’s native equine breed is praiseworthy. In an effort to reinforce the PRE as an ambassador, its image has been included in the various creations for publication in specialized magazines, together with other values that Marca España has,” stated Espinosa de Los Monteros. handling the PRE Stud Book

ANCCE was officially granted the responsibility of handling the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book (LG PRE) in 2007. As a breed originating in Spain, herd numbers are currently increasing throughout the world. Handling the PRE Stud Book was a project in the making for many years, thanks to the promotion of President Carmen MartĂnez de Sola, who established it as an essential objective of her legislation. PRE stud book AFTER YEARS of tireless efforts, on December 26, 2006, Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, by means of the General Office for Livestock Farming signed the resolution granting ANCCE the right and responsibility to handle the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book and develop the corresponding Breeding Program. Ten years have come and gone since the Association was recognized as the only official body to issue Equine ID (EID) documents to Purebred Spanish Horses born anywhere in the world. Since then and until today, the PRE Stud Book has registered 145,000 horses in 65 countries; it has registered 25,000 new breeders and has processed 85,000 changes of ownership. Over the years, the PRE Stud Book office has designed a sophisticated, internet-based communication and information tool that maintains an important network in contact and that is able to provide breeders all over the world with a variety of services in a fast and efficient manner. The Stud Book has evolved to adapt to a changing reality and a sector with specific needs. These facts have placed the PRE Stud Book office as a reference for quality and a benchmark model for other equine breeds, especially in Europe. Juan Tirado, president of ANCCE, points out that “the PRE Stud Book is rooted in a very solid foundation that has made it a reference within the sector at the international level. It has a faithful and undeniable commitment to correctly serve owners and breeders of Purebred Spanish Horses. This very reason is why we update our Quality Management System Certificate in keeping with UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 standards. Having official endorsement of the excellent work carried out translates into greater efficiency and improved services provided to breeders the world over.” Stud Book Director Arancha Rodríguez states that “we have a team of highly devoted people, who believe in the importance of their work; this motivates them to continue training and grow with their sights on continued improvement.” The future of the PRE Stud Book lies in its continued development to meet

22

the needs of a sector that demands more complete services. Tirado added that “we practice professionalism, which is the style that identifies us. We continue to be motivated when faced with new challenges, as we are backed by our objectives and actively involved in attaining them.” Isabel García Tejerina, the current Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, granted this magazine an Interview in 2015. She recognized the impeccable efforts of ANCCE in managing the PRE Stud Book and developing a Breeding Program for one of Spain’s most emblematic breeds. Moreover, she underscored the added value that breeders enjoy when registering their horses in this Stud Book. The universalization of the breed has been one of ANCCE’s greatest challenges. Efforts carried out nationally have facilitated substantial advances in the quality of breeding, but progress needs to continue on international markets to capitalize on the work by our many breeders. In this regard, the efforts undertaken

by ANCCE and its members must be recognized, as they have made Spain’s native breed the most widespread. Such efforts are the guardian of Spain’s native genetics; this has had a direct impact on increased breeder enthusiasm when breeding PRE horses, and greater involvement and integration in ANCCE activities. Over the past years, tireless efforts have been invested in improving genetics, which has allowed increased farm efficiency and greater competitiveness and market profitability. Registering a foal with the stud book is a step forward in improving the breed and its performance. That is why the Ministry of Agriculture and the Departments of Genetics at a number of universities in Spain are collaborating in the design and selection verification to improve the quality and competitive edge of the equine sector. PRE BREEDING PROGRAM Although time seems to fly, the truth is that ANCCE has been working on the genetic improvement of the Purebred

Foals owned by Yeguada Vilaire.

Spanish Horses for only fourteen years, since the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment approved the PRE Breeding Program. At the time, a long-held ambition of Spain’s equine sector began to acquire momentum: recuperate the delay with other countries so that Spain had horses with important quality genetics and high levels to participate in equestrian disciplines. It wasn’t easy to design and draft a document with the breeding objectives and criteria, establish the performance controls, define the genetic assessment methodology and the various breeding categories. Finetuning the methodology to be used in the performance controls was far from easy, and the same held true when reaching the genetic connection levels between horses, riders and judges. As Tirado stated, “we need to feel proud of our achievements: the PRE Breeding Program is at the same level as any other European program, and has been recognized by the European Federation for Animal Science (EAAP). This distinction was granted in Norway for the work performed by ANCCE staff and the MERAGEM Research Group. This is true backing for the quality of the PRE Breeding Program and it has influenced to the extent that today, we have horses participation in top-level sports.”

Two years later, and once all of the necessary data was collected, the first genetic assessments were performed and published in the PRE Catalog of Breeding Stock. The initial version included 57 horses that earned the category of Young Recommended Breeding Stock. Among these were horses that became outstanding international Dressage athletes. Not only was it the beginning of a new voyage that provided a qualitative step forward in how breeding horses were selected, but also the birth of a new catalog with a clear vocation 23

for continued renewal. The catalog had to be enriched with new horses, with selection criteria based on the demands of the sector and continued renovation of the assessment techniques. Over the past 14 years, there have been 68,022 genetic assessments (45,456 mares and 22,566 stallions). In terms of having a Conformation Aptitude for Dressage, 55,744 horses (38,439 mares and 17,305 stallions) from 12,362 stud farms have been genetically assessed. 12,278 horses (5,261 stallions and 7,017 mares) from 4,055 stud farms have been genetically assessed for Dressage. Previously, the assessment methods used in Spain lacked adequate characteristics to attain the objectives established in the PRE Breeding Program. In 2008, performance tests began using the Lineal Conformation Score to genetically assess horses for their conformation. 2,153 performance tests were carried out on horses from 648 stud farms, of which 87 horses earned the category of Young Recommended Breeding Stock and thanks to their lineal conformation traits; these were listed in the first PRE Catalog of Breeding Stock.

There has been an increase in the number of performance tests carried out in the most recent genetic assessment for conformation. This is due to the decision of the PRE Breeding Program Management Commission to adapt the Basic Aptitude for breeding in the performance tests for conformation, which was implemented in 2012. To date, performance tests for conformation have been carried out using the Lineal Conformation Score on 19,936 horses (which corresponds to 12,310 mares and 7,626 stallions) from 6,209 stud farms. These tests consist in assessing the conformation of a horse using the Lineal Conformation Score Sheet that includes 54 variables that cover all body regions. The PRE Stud Book was founded 105 years ago, and has been handled by ANCCE for the past decade. It is the only officially recognized register for the breed. We have one of the oldest stud books in the world, with the first registrations dating back to 1912 and it has continued uninterrupted throughout the years. It has been ten years of continued commitment with PRE horse breeders and owners. ÂĄÂĄ

How did you get stated in the world of Purebred Spanish Horses? I was searching for a baroque type of horse for riding, which happened to be a PRE mare named Iliada XIV, bred by Yeguada El Bardal de Tabera. Later, we moved from Stockholm to the farm where we currently live. I covered my mare and bought another that was pregnant. I found Sevillano XLIX in Denmark, bred by Miguel Granda Losada, as there were not many stallions nearby. So that was the beginning of it all. How many PRE horses are there at your stud farm? Currently we have 15. One stallion, 6 mares and the rest are youngsters. Your best stallion/mare/foal is: My best stallion is the only one I have, Sevillano XLIX, and my best mare is Invicta S. Among the foals, the best one is Primero Oro S, who is currently 3-years-old. He is the 4th generation of my breeding project; hopefully he’ll be my next breeding stallion. What are your priorities: sports, hacking, breeding, etc.? Without a doubt, my priority is breeding and the objective is to breed versatile horses adapted to any type of activity. I try to produce sound horses and I like the genes for creme and pearl. Therefore, I breed PRE horses true to the breed prototype, but characterized by their beautiful colors.

What does the future hold for PRE horses in your country? In Sweden, the number of PRE horses and interest in the breed is constantly increasing. The taller horses are generally used in competition, more specifically for dressage; those that are not so big –in my opinion best comply with PRE breed quality– are for other uses such as breeding or riding. What do you like most about the Spanish Horse? What I like the most about the breed is that they are incredibly beautiful. They are the kindest and most adorable horses in the world. Moreover, they are comfortable and easy to ride, if you understand the sensitivity of the breed. ¡¡ 36

ANCCE reports 2016 PRE Stud Book Report

2800 new breeders registered with the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book in 2016 More than 10,000 new horses were registered with the PRE Stud Book. Last year, the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book (LG PRE ANCCE) registered 2850 new breeder codes–including national and international breeders–from countries such as Algeria, Bahrein, and Russia, to mention a few. The PRE Stud Book also registered 10,941 new Purebred Spanish Horses, which is a 3.4% increase in total herd numbers for the breed. Thus, on the 31st of December, there were 231,003 horses from 31,050 active stud farms, located in 65 countries.

38

Of the new breeders registered with the PRE Stud Book (12% more than in 2015), 34% are from abroad, with most of these being in the United States, Germany and Italy. The remaining 66% are from Spain, with Andalusia, Madrid, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha leading the ranking. Regarding other services offered by the PRE Stud Book, 5028 horses were assessed as having Basic Aptitudes as Breeding Stock. 9129 changes of ownership were processed. It is important to note the number of Revisions carried out abroad by PRE Stud Book veterinarians, as they travelled to 30 different countries, including Poland, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Bahrein, etc. This proves that the promotional efforts carried out in recent years to universalize the breed are beginning to bear fruit. Moreover, throughout the year, PRE Stud Book representatives participated in trade fairs, conventions, offered training courses for breeders and enthusiasts and held meetings with authorized veterinarians and collaborating associations to refresh and discuss new management procedures. ANCCE’s PRE Stud Book renewed its 2016 Quality Certificate in keeping with UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 norms. This fact backs the excellence of the work carried out, which directly affects efficiency and improves the services provide to Purebred Spanish horse breeders the world over. Finally, thanks to the efforts of the PRE Breeding program, the more than 68,000 genetic assessments of PRE horses have been uploaded– available on the PRE Stud Book web site. This is a 15% increase over last year (2015). This information is now accessible for breeders, free of charge. The same holds true for all of the data contained in the Official Breeding Stock Catalog, thus making it a useful tool to contribute to improving PRE genetics. By using the Catalog, breeders increase the genetic progress in future generations, especially in the current economic situation where increased productivity and competitiveness are essential for breeders to guarantee the feasibility of their business operations. ¡¡

BREEDING PROGRAM

PRE Breeding Program publishes more than 68,000 Genetic Assessments A useful tool that contributes to breeding stock selection and stud farm genetic improvement The PRE Breeding Program continues its efforts to contribute to the dissemination of genetic improvement and increase the genetic progress in future generations. Recently, the stud book office published all of the genetic data on its website for the horses assessed to date, both for Dressage as well as conformation aptitudes for Dressage. All in all, 68,022 genetic assessments have been published (45,456 mares and 22,566 stallions). Concerning the conformation aptitude for Dressage, the genetic data for 55,744 horses has been

published (which corresponds to 38,439 mares and 17,305 stallions) from 12,362 stud farms. In the case of genetic assessment of horses for Dressage, 12,278 horses (5,261 stallions and 7,017 mares) have been published; these horses are from 4,055 stud farms. Any breeder or technician in the equine/equestrian sector may access genetically assessed horses, and consult the transmission of potential qualities to offspring, for all characteristic assessed. Thus, breeders may select the breeding stock that interests most to obtain descendants with specific traits.

This allows breeders to take a quantitative step forward in their stud farm’s genetic selection. For this, prior to mating, one needs to have knowledge of the genetic values of both parents, as each transmits 50% of his/her genetic information to its progeny. We have published all genetic values for all horses assessed (not only those horses listed in the Breeding Stock Catalog). Breeders now have a useful tool that contributes to the selection of breeding stock and the genetic improvement not only for their stud farms, but also for the breed in general. ¡¡

New tools to calculate inbreeding In the Private Zone of the PRE Stud Book website as you already know, breeders may calculate the inbreeding coefficient for any horse on their stud farm. Breeders may also calculate this factor for possible progeny from the horses on their stud farm and any other PRE horse. Currently, several new tools have been developed that enable a breeder to calculate the inbreeding index of all horses on his/her stud farm at once, without having to do this horse by horse. Moreover, it provides the average inbreeding value for that stud farm. At the same time, the possibility of calculating the inbreeding coefficient for descendants from any PRE with all of the horses included on that stud farm has also been created… and in a single step! In all cases, the inbreeding coefficient continues to include the Pedigree Completeness Index indicating the extension of the pedigree, based upon which the consanguinity is calculated. The higher the level of this Index, the greater the information we have about the pedigree used to calculate consanguinity, and therefore the reliability it will have. These functions allow breeders to have more, userfriendly information about inbreeding that is less time consuming. At the same time, it can be used within the

scope of the genetic PRE Breeding Program, as inbred mating could represent, together with selection, a tool for breeders to increase the genetic merits of their stud farms. ¡¡ 39

PRE Horses star in the institutional video by Marca España Spanish horses considered an icon and an identifying mark of Spain ANCCE began the year with one of the most important promotional activities for Purebred Spanish horses and the sector, as Marca España included PRE horses in its 2017 institutional video as one of the most representative icons of Spanish culture. The advertisement premiered on January 1st, on National TV (Televisión Española) and its international channel. Currently, the video is being disseminated through all Marca España social media channels and ANCCE with the hashtag #SpainEverywhere. The full institutional video was presented at the Viana Palace in Madrid at the hand of Alfonso Dastis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs

and Cooperation and Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros, the High Commissioner for Marca España. Attending this event were ANCCE President Juan Tirado and Pedro Pingarrón from the Press, Promotion and Marketing Commission. This year, the breathtaking film shows the presence of Spain and Spaniards throughout the world by means of its culture, customs, cuisine art, businesses, innovation, technology, etc. The spot is an audiovisual review of places in the world where Spain has left its mark. With this advertisement, and the very first time, the institution Marca España has proven the importance of the Purebred Spanish Horse breeding in

65 countries throughout the world. Undoubtedly, it is added value for a native equine breed that Marca España acknowledges, both nationally and internationally, with PRE horses being one of Spain’s icons and identifying marks. ¡¡

Within the framework of the Global Dressage Festival, ANCCE participated in the USPRE (US PRE Association), Spanish Horse Week in Wellington, Florida. This event seeks to back all of the representatives and breeders in the US–member s of ANCCE and USPRE–and the many riders competing in the various international CDI Dressage competitions. Juan Tirado, President of ANCCE, and Manuel González, the Executive Secretary, travelled to Wellington for the five-day event that counts on the participation of breeders, trainers and Olympic riders, both national and international. A wide range of activities were organized to establish commercial ties and provide the sector with training. As is the case every year, 750 people filled the Global Pavilion to enjoy the very best competitions, exhibitions and free-style riding. Likewise, USPRE held its annual gala dinner for its members and those earning 2017 awards. The venue for this event was the International Polo Club in Wellington. ¡¡ 40

SPORTS

ANCCE grants for sport horse owners ANCCE would like to recuperate the grant system for horses, both stallions and mares achieving successful results in sports such as Dressage, Doma Vaquera, Carriage Driving, Show Jumping and Eventing. ANCCE General Sports Commission, chaired by Mariano Santo, has implemented the system that seeks to promote the participation of PRE horses in national and especially international competitions. The grants range between 400 and 10,000 euros and are given to the rightful owner that appears in the Stud Book. He/ she will have a right to receive the amount if and when said person is a full-fledged member of of ANCCE when awarded. Should the horse be sold, if the new owner is also a full-fledged member of ANCCE he/she may also receive the non-spent part of the grant. 42

To receive scholarship funds, only the results obtained by Purebred Spanish mares and stallions are allowed. In the case of carriage driving, all of the horses participating must be registered in the Stud Book. Grants are not obtained directly but rather as an economic support to participate in high-level competition (national category or greater) in the season after the one in which results were obtained. With proven invoices, ANCCE will pay for inscriptions, transportation (a personal system based on distance travelled will be established), attendance at national team meetings for the given discipline (if and when said sport is not subsidized by a National Federation, etc.). Rider and owner travel expenses, maintenance and accommodations are excluded. ¡¡

Yeguada Las Arenas “Breeding high-quality PREs”

t 44

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, Julián Gómez Domínguez had a dream that began to take shape. His passion drove him to buy a foal so he could participate in competitions. The more than positive results encouraged him to grow, little by little, until consolidating his nationally renowned Purebred Spanish horse stud farm. Located in the town of Lebrija in the province of Sevilla, Las Arenas farm holds 35 mares, 5 stallions and 60 foals varying in ages. The facilities count on 25 stalls, 8 pens, a circular training arena, a 60X20 arena, another smaller arena and a 4-horse walker. Each and every stud farm is characterized by its own uniqueness and bloodline. In the case of Yeguada Las Arenas, its pillars are founded in the Guardiola bloodline, as we consider it a line that is most faithful to breed quality. Horses descending from Romero Benitez and Bohorguez bloodlines were also added, although we no longer include this latter. Our main priority is to breed quality PRE horses; to do so, it is key to have horses with good movements and that comply with the standards for the breed. Having complied with these two premises, any other quality is more than welcome, since they contribute

added value to the next generation. For many years, Yeguada Las Arenas has favored Conformation because as Julian Gomez Dominguez states, these competitions allow foals to become renowned both now and in the future. Such events work as filters to know which horses are

Malteso Arenas and Atento Arenas among others. The stud farm´s trophy case has approximately 170 trophies, even though in the past few years they have not attended as many competitions as they used to. Since 2015, Yeguada Las Arenas horses have not been seen in the arenas, but Julian Gomez assures us that this year they will be competing again with the 3-year-old horse Atento Arenas and young horses Lebrijana Arenas and Maltesa Arenas. The participation at SICAB 2017 is still a mystery. Julian Gomez Domiguez has stated: “Only time can tell the pathway our horses will take. We are open to every possibility”. ¡¡

SEASONAL SPORTS PLAN FOR DRESSAGE

“Two years of successful work” TEXT: JORGE CONDE PHOTOS: azahara pérez

t 50

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF any project is to consolidate an idea that continues to grow. This has been the case with the Seasonal Sports Plan for Dressage. It was the brainchild of the ANCCE Sub-commission for Dressage in 2015 and it has been developed and executed throughout 2016. After two years of satisfactory endeavors, we are now enjoying the initial fruits, as there is growing interest on behalf of breeders and riders. As you may recall, this project arose from the need to create an active group of young riders with the best Purebred Spanish horses in the country to take over when the current competition athletes retire. The main aim is for there to be no lack of PRE horses at all national and international competitions, improve the training of PRE horses

and incentive breeders with technical assistance so that these horses are integrated into the breeding program. It was the actual sector and ANCCE–as advocate for the breed and to promote PRE horses in sports–that took note of these needs. There were no qualms when it came to finding a solution for these deficiencies in an effort to move forward, prosper while at the same time obtain good results. And so, in just a year, not only had the Seasonal Sports Plan for Dressage been created, but it was growing and is now a consolidated effort. This year, the program has expanded to include Junior Riders. Although an innovation, in just three months, it is being well accepted by the younger generation. When it comes to younger riders, the priorities are basically the same as

Perdido Cad, owned by Yeguada Mendoza Cadema.

for adults: aid, advise and collaborate in the preparation of riders under the age of 25, in any of the six categories to strengthen the number of quality athletes at all levels to guarantee future champion contestants. Thanks to this initiative, ANCCE is increasing its investment in the Seasonal Sports Plan for Dressage to surpass 2016 statistics. CONCLUSIONS The Seasonal Sports Plan for Dressage is complying to the line with all objectives, which are to train, prepare and advise the participating riders and their horses using a variety of methods as deemed by the technical team. Riders receive individual and personal training; new guidelines are provided so that they work better and correct technical gestures and posture; they learn tricks to improve their external perception and optimize resources for competition. The most commonly seen problems–and those where techniques and improvements are stressed–have been the correction of short necks and tense top lines with the associated problems in connecting through the back to 52

obtain a stable and forward-going contact in the rider’s hand, and improvement in the horse’s balance and better engagement of their hind quarters. Additionally, thanks to specific training, the horse is now more straight and shoulder-in is being used at first and to improve many other exercises. Another goal attained has been to promote PRE involvement and group identity through education from humbleness and respect. The degree of commitment and appreciation shown towards the group–both towards me and trainer José Antonio García Mena–has undoubtedly been the best result to date and key to the satisfaction for a year’s work. In 2016, a number of horses were incorporated into the ANCCE Cup for Dressage that had never competed. Reports state that these same participants have caused a real stir this season! I can’t say enough about the Plan in terms of it being a unique opportunity for breeders and riders wanting to compete. This plan provides professional orientation, which until now, was out of reach. In turn, this led to lack of knowledge

cost for many, with competitions being inaccessible. Due to this, a number of important Dressage talents were lost forever. EXPANSION: SEASONAL SPORTS PLAN FOR JUNIOR RIDERS The Dressage Sub-committee has decided to include junior in the Seasonal Sports Plan. The importance of correctly preparing and training new generation is a universal truth, as in this case, we seek to guarantee a successful future in Dressage arenas. Several members of the Subcommittee have expressed their interest and enthusiasm for this initiative. In this regard, US breeder Kimberly Van Kamper and member of said committee, has offered her Olympic rider, José Daniel Martín Dockx as trainer. Thus, Martín Dockx has given considerable impetus to riders/horses at the training sessions and clinics held to date. In the case of junior trainees, the same structure and work protocol used with adult riders has been programmed; in other words, training sessions based on geographical location: Southern (Malaga), Central (Segovia) and Eastern (city yet to be determined). About ten (10) horses/ riders have been established per session; hereto, the actual training is based on the method used for adults. 54

• In the case of adults, the Seasonal Sports Plan for Dressage has received 129 requests, which includes young horses. • Of the 42 horses/riders assess and trained to date, 36 have repeated at least two training workshops. • 92% of the participating horses/riders have competed throughout 2016, which is a basic requirement of the Plan. Some of these same participants had been, until now, total unknowns. • 13 horses/riders participated in the ANCCE Cup Final for Dressage (SICAB 2016). The first places in the categories for 4, 6 and 7 year-olds were trained thanks to the Seasonal Sports Plan. • At the end of each workshop, participants are asked to fill out a satisfaction survey, with the results for this point being 9.3. • 35 requests have been received to participate in the Seasonal Sports Plan for Junior Riders. • Andalusia is the main source of requests, with 45%. Southern Spain, together with Murcia, account for 55% of all registrations. • Requests increased 25% in the first month of 2017, which indicates the growth rate.

At the first session, the emphasis is more generic to focus on basic work, including practical lessons and classroom theory sessions. In this latter case, virtues and defects are analyzed. At the second session, a judge assesses work in the arena. A number of future actions have also been contemplated; one is to “select the team.” Once again, as in the case of adult riders, a smaller group would be chosen for continued follow-up and constant aid in certain scenarios that would lead these riders towards top-level competition. ¡¡

ALTHOUGH the text is extensive, a simplified version, outlining the main points of interest is provided herein. With this, we seek to facilitate the comprehension of the new framework to help breeders, associations and organizing committees adapt to the changes incorporated into the text and comply with their relative obligations. 1. NATIONAL ANCCE COMPETITIONS Competitions included in the National Category may be judged by two (2) or three (3) Conformation Judges and one (1) or two (2) Functionality Judges, who are assigned by a draw. In the case of international events, those in the National Category are judged by at least one (1) Conformation Judge and one (1) Functionality Judge. These too are assigned by a draw. The only exception is those competitions in which participation the previous year had fewer than fifty (50) horses entered. In such cases, the Competition may be judges by a single Conformation Judge for both sections, and always with prior authorization form the Competition Commission. 2. REGIONAL ANCCE COMPETITIONS Competitions included in the Regional Category may be judges by one (1) or two (2) Conformation Judges, who are assigned by a draw. Having a Functionality Judge is optional. 3. SYSTEM TO SELECT JUDGES All Judges are assigned, based on a draw, under the direct supervision of the Technical Committee of Judges. 4. CATEGORIES FOR JUDGES a) National Judges: Annually, a maximum of fifteen (15) National Conformation Judges are chosen, as well as three (3) substitute judges. Likewise, a maximum of ten (10) National Functionality Judges, plus three (3) substitute judges are also chosen. Substitute judges only act at National Competitions when the need arises; if necessary, these judges alternate with their Regional appointment. b) Regional Judges: These include all other Judges on the Official List, except those who have

failed to attain annual authorization to judge. Judges in this category may only judge at Regional Competitions, in Spain; exceptionally, those Judges who are National substitutes may work at International Competitions as deemed by the circumstances. Regional Judges have the same obligations and responsibilities as National Judges, as indicated in Article 38. 5. JUDGING MODEL Judging at competitions that are qualifiers for the World PRE Championship follows the model indicated below: a) At Competitions with more than one (1) Conformation Judge: Judges may talk among themselves, share impressions and agree on matters as seen appropriate, but each Judge must fill out his/her own judging sheet individually. The final score is obtained from a mathematical average of all scores. b) At Competitions with more than one (1) Functionality Judge Judging is carried out jointly and the score on a single score sheet, based on consensus. 6. PROCEDURE IN THE ARENA Presenters have a time limit of two minutes and fifteen seconds (2 min. 15 sec.) to present their horses in movement. After this time, they are called to the center of the arena; no movement performed outside of the established time limit is taken into consideration. If in fifteen (15) seconds horse and rider fail to appear in the center of the arena, they are eliminated. Should there be an accident or a case of force majeure, the clock stops until the incident has concluded. 7. BEST BREEDER AWARD The participating stud farms may present an unlimited number of horses, but only the six (6) best scores are taken into consideration for this Award. To seek the Best Breeder Award, the breeder must present at least one (1) stallion, one (1) mare and a 3-mare cobra. 8. BEST MOVEMENT AWARD In the case of this Award, the previous system is used. Thus, there is one (1) 57

conformation award for adult horses and another for youngstock.

a category and even the disqualification of Judges as established in Article 43.

9. QUALIFYING FOR THE WORLD PRE HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP (SICAB) The number of qualified horse has increased and allows, independently of the number of participants in a section, the first place in each category to qualify.

11. ADMISSIONS PANEL The Admissions Panel verifies that the phenotypic integrity of any participating horse has not been altered artificially with paint, dyes, extensions of manes and tails, etc. Should alterations be found, the Organizing Committee is informed.

10. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE OF JUDGES This Committee appoints the Judges for the World PRE Championship Final. Previously the Competition Commission is informed. Likewise, the Executive Committee ratifies the Competition Commission’s input. On the other hand, the Technical Committee may propose the upgrade and downgrade of

12. ANTI-DOPING TESTING Information relative to this section is currently being drafted by the Pharmacology Department at the University of Cordoba School of Veterinarian Science. In due course, the full list of prohibited substances and products will be published. ¡¡

he goal of the Ecuadorian PRE Breeders’ A s s o c i a t i o n ( A E CC P R E ) fo c u s e s o n preserving, protecting and promoting the Purebred Spanish Horse both nationally and internationally. This is why all horses born in Ecuador, and duly registered in the PRE Stud Book through AECCPRE, are registered and have their ownership card. This makes them a Purebred Spanish Horse that is recognized the world over. Over the past 20 years, association activities have diversified for the benefit of members. I n a d d i t i o n t o C o n fo rm a t i o n - fu n c t i o n a l Competitions, the association organizes parades, seminars, clinics and since 2012, organizes and promotes the Iberian Dressage Cup for Iberian Horses (specifically for PRE and Lusitano Horses). Additionally, there are also Stud Book services, such as registrations, graphic descriptions, and the assessment of horses to guarantee the purity, excellence and breed quality of all horses born in Ecuador.

Herrador XXI, six-time Champion, with his proud owner, Francisco Roldán Cobo.

ESTABLISHMENT OF AECCPRE AECCPRE began its activities on the 24th of November in 1992 when the Founding Act was signed. Said document states: “Those signing this

document have decided to constitute the PRE Breeders’ Association of Ecuador.” Founded as a non-profit corporation, the Association has its own legally constituted structure and wealth. The organization’s main objective is to maintain the Purebred Spanish Horse prototype, in keeping with the current ethnic and physiological traits as established by the corresponding bodies in Spain and in the By-laws. The Assembly entrusted Wilson Granja Avalos with the responsibility of handling all of the necessary paperwork to attain official recognition from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farming. Gonzalo Chiriboga Chaves, on the other hand, accepted the task of secretary when the act was sign by 21 founding members. At the same time, the Association By-laws were drafted, approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farming of Ecuador by means of Ministerial Agreement number 161, dated the 9th of December, 1992 and published in the Official Register number 94, dated the 29th of March, 1993. The Association’s first President was Wilson Granja Ávalos. He strove for AECCPRE to be recognized as a PRE Breeders’ Association by the Cría Caballar in Spain, and before the FICCE (International Federation of Spanish Horse Breeders). 20TH FAIR AND PRE COMPETITIONS Initially, the venue for Conformation Competitions was Club Hacienda El Refugio, where thanks to Juan Carlos Burneo competitions were organized until 2007. At that time, the selection process began to improve PRE conformation and functionality; association membership was also consolidated. Since 2008, the El Quito Tennis & Golf Club became the competition venue. Its extensive facilities and the diversity of these have facilitated a greater number of visitors to the twenty fairs that have been successfully held there, despite the incident in 1999 under the presidency of Álvaro Ponce Almeida. Looking back, the events could be considered anecdotal, but at the time, the fair was at great risk. Back

The fair was to be held at the beginning of March, but just a few days prior to its commencement, there was a national transportation walkout –perhaps the most important in the past 50 years– that hindered all vehicle transportation, including the horses going to the event. The Organizing Committee was forced to postpone the fair until April where participation was limited to 69 horses. 1ST PUREBRED SPANISH HORSE FAIR Ecuador held its first Purebred Spanish Horse Fair in 1997. It was organized jointly with the Arabian Horse Association, under the presidency of Gonzalo Chiriboga Chaves and Juan Llamas Perdigó–author of several books about PRE horses–as the Judge; 52 horses from 12 different stud farms entered the Competition. Twelve horses were actually born in Ecuador while the rest were, for the most part, from Costa Rica and Spain. CONTESTING STUD FARMS Over the past 20 years, one of the most outstanding stud farms at competitions has been El Pongo. It has been Best Breeder seven times. G. Chiriboga & sons and Criadero La Higuerita have been granted the Best Exhibiting Breeder Award on seven occasions. Among the historic champions in Ecuador, some of the most outstanding include Herrador XXII –owned by Hnos. Roldán Cobos– was

proclaimed Stallion Champion on seven different occasions. The mare Ágata XX from Criadero La Higuerita is a four-time Champion Mare. To conclude, the support from all breeders participating at fairs must be greatly appreciated. Others worthy of our appreciation include Lorena Freire, administrative director of AECCPRE and Verónica Zambrano, technical director. There are many sponsors who have contributed, year after year, to the competitions and are worthy of our thanks, especially EFG Bank, which has been an official sponsor for the past seven years, and of course Confiteca, that has backed the association right from the very beginning. ¡¡

Purebred Spanish Horses shine in their own light in Wellington

E

very year, during the third week of January, USPRE Week is held within the framework of Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) in Wellington (Florida). The program is full of activities dedicated to Purebred Spanish Horses in an effort to promote the breed in the United States. The fair began on Tuesday with a welcome cocktail for USPRE members at the White Horse Tavern. Enrique de Benito, Janne Rumbough, Emilie Laval, Patrick Roggenbau, Kimberly Van Kampen, Tanya Duffey, Carmen Franco, Miguel Coves, Rebecca Kelly and Jeanne Noel Sheeley were on hand for the event. On Wednesday morning, Tanya Duffey, executive director of USPRE, offered a workshop about the PRE Stud Book, where doubts concerning revisions and assessment were discussed. Breeders Bill Taylor, executive member of USPRE and owner of Xavier Farms, Miguel Núñez, vice-president of USPRE and owner of Yeguada Miguel Núñez, Lucinda Striker, PRE horse presenter, and Debra C. Phelon, executive member of the USPRE and owner of Solitude Andalusians LLC, participated in a roundtable about the American market and sports. The debate concluded with the generalized idea that it is vitally important that the sales of PRE horses be focused towards sports.

Wednesday night was the most important event of the week: the USPRE Party, with the main topic being the Grand Prix. This event was held in the marquee at the Adequan Global Dressage stadium. There were more than 800 guests at the event, including Juan Tirado and Manuel González, President and Executive Secretary of ANCCE, respectively. The first show was presented at the hand of opera singer Xavier García, who interpreted the famous theme Il Trovador (The Troubadour), accompanied by the twirls, swerving arms, footstomping and the twisting of decorative fans in the hands of flamenco dancers. Nine PRE stallions paraded around them boasting their beauty, majesty and noble spirit. The audience enjoyed a number of Dressage with Nicolás Fyffe and a young American rider Kerrigan Gluch. One of the most outstanding moments was the presentation of mares practicing sports; Maria Lithander presented Bárbara XXXIV to the music of Wings by Little Mix. A black and white pas de deux by Emily Copeland and Elena Schiefele emphasized the various coat colors found in PREs; in the meantime, experienced rider Janne Roumbough executed the final exhibition riding her horse Armas Zumbel. On Thursday, Federico León Nieto, veterinarian of Grandioso III, offered a workshop about PRE

horses in Dressage. He explained the possible solutions to the most commonly seen problems, both from the preventive and therapeutic point of view. In the afternoon, members of USPRE were invited to a Gala Dinner at the International Polo Club Palm Beach; Juan Tirado inaugurated the event with a short speech in which he underlined the tremendous work that USPRE is doing to promote the breed in the US. After the banquet, the Special Awards were granted for Member of the Year, Breeder of the Year, Equestrian of the Year, Horse & Rider of the Year, Mare of the Year, Stallion of the Year and 2016 Functionality Award. On the next-to-the-last day, Doina Fisher and Carmen Franco taught a theory class about Working Equitation, which is an equestrian category for Iberian horses; afterwards, Fisher provided a demonstration with a variety of obstacles. Simultaneously, Sebastián Bastida, renowned PRE presenter, taught a course about the most important points to remember when presenting a horse before a Tribunal for Qualified Breeding Stock (TQB), including the position of the neck, the perfect halt, the length of stride at walk and at trot, as well as straightness, among other aspects. Friday night was dedicated to rendering tribute to Grandioso III. José Daniel Martin Dockx bid farewell to his competition partner to the tune of his Kür. Once again, this edition of USPRE Week was a magical week where the beauty, strength, quality and noble spirit of magnificent horses was the epicenter of the equestrian capital par excellence. ¡¡ 64
