I AM WRITING THESE LINES when the 45th ANCCE General Assembly has just concluded, which has led me to make two comments. First of all, it seems unbelievable that three years have already gone by since I was elected to the office of President…the 28th of June, 2014 seems to have been just yesterday; the truth is that three-quarters of my term has already come and gone. Upon looking back, there are many things that have changed; even if not everything has been achieved, at least we have inverted certain tendencies that had stagnated ANCCE structures. I am not referring solely to competitions, where we have updated and modernized Conformation Competition Rules; our members now play an active role in the new configuration, a Judging Manual has been drafted, the Competition Commission has been revitalized, a Technical Committee of Judges has been created and the reality of the actual competitions has been revamped. Other departments must also be referenced, as these have provided the content for the daily life of our Association. WE HAVE A COMPETITION APP that works very well—an example if you may—and other sports-related innovations involve Dressage and Dressage Competitions. We have an intuitive web site, in both English and Spanish, where the latest information and services for members are provided daily. Members of ANCCE are the focal point of all activities with their registration fees having been reduced; we have introduced a scholarship system, designed Selection Tests and the ANCCE Cup Competition at affordable prices. Breeders may more or less agree with what has been undertaken, but inactivity is not on the list of accusations. ALL OF THIS IS TRUE together with many other aspects that have been launched throughout this triennial. As I stated in my speech at the Assembly: “instead of a protest, provide a proposal.” This is precisely what I expect from our members: the ability to disagree while at the same time providing a feasible alternative that seeks the common good for all. ALTHOUGH THREE YEARS HAVE PASSED BY, we still have a year to continue innovating to provide ANCCE with more and better structures as well as more immediate services for our breeders; I will not wane in my efforts to attain the desired goals with the help of my team, the ANCCE employees and the collaboration of each of every one of you. Next year, there will be a new term at ANCCE, and it is my obligation, and yours as well, to bequeath an Association that is greater, more efficient, more operational and with solid structures that facilitate an easy and functioning office. UNTIL THAT MOMENT ARRIVES, I once again, request your collaboration. As stated over and over again: presidencies come and go, but ANCCE remains and the institution must always be protected.

A Promising Season for Purebred Spanish Horses
a
AT THE ONSET of the 1980s, PRE horses began participating in Dressage. It was Álvaro Domecq who catapulted the breed to toplevel competitions. Since then, three decades have come and gone and thanks to the efforts of breeders and owners, PRE horses have earned the respect of both national and international judges. In recent years, the breeding sector has faced a devastating crisis. This era of economic turbulence has damaged the equestrian world in general, but at the same time, it has allowed breeders to be more demanding and selective when dedicating their horses to sports. In this regard, Purebred Spanish Horses have taken qualitative steps forward. Thanks to the steadfast perseverance, dedication and love of breeders, a strand of light can be seen on the horizon. Proof of this are the international competitions where Spanish Horses compete against European breeds with averages well over 75%. In fact, at the latest CDI3* competition, held from the 11th to the 14th of May at Castilla & León Equestrian Center, we witnessed how several PRE horses were among the highest places contestants in their respective levels: Poeta de Susaeta, Resuelto y Jordán CEN, Mejorano HGF and Charlie Brown.
Other horses are also worthy of mention; Duende MB and Ulises de Ymas, competed in the Master category for Young Horses in Segovia (7 year-olds). Duende MB had averages of 73% at the international level, where he proved his worth at the CDI held at los Albardones in February. Ulises de Ymas premiered on the American circuits in Wellington, where he earned averages between 72-73%. The season is unfolding to show that the level of Purebred Spanish Horses is one of quality. There have even been horses that have surpassed the 80% barrier. Over the past few years, there has been an on-going debate about the abilities of the breed at competition. The evidence is clear: PRE horses have what it takes to face the challenges of top-level competition. ¡¡ Lily Forado

It is a worthy promotion that has taken 30 years. How will you face an appointment that comes with so many responsibilities? With high hopes, and as you very well stated, accepting major responsibilities. Taking a look back in time, when and how did you begin your career as a judge? In 1972, I attended a course in Barcelona, taught by the FEI Dressage director, who was Wolfgang Niggli. That was the turning point; I was very interested in the topic and it helped me greatly in my teaching and to work with the horses I was competing with and riding at that time. Since then, and until today, I have continually taken refresher courses and attended national and international seminars. Thus, I have moved up through the various categories to reach Category 5.
What are your hopes for this new chapter of your career? Be able to judge at the Olympics where Spain earns a gold medal. When did you judge a Purebred Spanish Horse for the first time? What was the sensation? Honestly, I don’t remember the exact year, but it was in the 1970s. In any case, prior to that, I had ridden PRE horses and for me, it is a breed with a good head and is naturally gifted for collection. Without a doubt you coincide with the fact that PRE horses are offering a very promising season. In your opinion, in which direction should Purebred Spanish Horses develop when it comes to Dressage? Yes, the season has been fantastic! Luckily, many PRE breeders have corrected those defects that the breed has suffered for years, and they are improving the breed

greatly, both as a sport horse and in terms of how riders present their horses. Breeders need to see that competitions are the best showcase for their products.
“bReedeRs, in addition to Selecting StallionS, should also Select the maRes” 12
What is your opinion about the horses that have represented Spain at the past WEG in Kentucky and Normandy and at the Olympics in London and Rio, such as Fuego de Cárdenas, Norte and Grandioso? They have been truly fantastic horses. There have been improvements since Evento and Flamenco and I really wished that
As an international judge, and for the benefit of breeders and riders, what advice would you give them when competing with PRE horses at national and international competitions? When it comes to breeders, I would say that in addition to selecting stallions, they should also select the mares; this is the best way to select the dams and lines for sports. In the case of riders, they need to continue to ride with high hopes just as they are doing and they must never forsake the Dressage bible: the training scale (rhythm, suppleness, contact/connection, impulsion, straightness, collection). I would like to remind riders that one of our tasks as judges it to help them improve, in addition to judging them at a competition. We are always willing in this regard; that is why we provide comments about any poor movement and at the end of the score sheet. We are open to positive dialogue within the availability of our schedule. In Spain, there are very good judges who have dedicated endless hours to learning and sacrificing their time in the arena whatever the weather conditions may be. Undoubtedly, we must take advantage of this knowledge. ¡¡

THE GUADIAMAR GREEN CORRIDOR is overflowing with life. Its 2700 hectares (6671 acres) along the Guadiamar River connects wildlife populations between Doñana (National Park) and the foothills of Sierra Morena. After the ecologic disaster in 1998 when a tailings dam of an Aznalcollar mine failed, the efforts made by the Andalusian Regional Government to restore the environment and the landscape have favored the development of the area. Recognized as a Site of Community Importance (SCI), the exuberant countryside runs from the pasturelands of the Sierra Morena foothills to the pine groves of Doñana, where the Asociación Guadiamar Equina (Equine Association) is located, with the main objective being to breed PRE Horses. Presided by Pedro Manenti, the Corridor is a 12 kilometer (approximately 7.5 miles) long strip of land, which, for the most part, falls within the town of Sanlúcar la Mayor. The Guadiamar Equine Association has an Administrative Concession from the Andalusian Regional Government--the legal owner of the land--to use the grasslands. The solicitation document regulates all obligations, including the payment of an annual fee, having liability insurance for all equines, maintain fencing and contract guards. Specifications also state that government veterinarians inspect all horses twice a year. The Association has more than 40 breeders; this translates into 340 mares and their foals living there in less than a year. Stallions and older colts (older than yearlings) are not allowed. Romero and Miguel García Diéguez are but a few of the many members. Breeder Román Romero is one of the outstanding founders of Gudiamar Equina; he led the Association for five years until the current president Pedro Manenti took over that responsibility. As a member of the Association, Román Romero describes the venue as a five-star hotel for horses. He guarantees that “the horses of Guadiamar Equina bathe, eat and drink in the river. Simply stated, this place is paradise.” This biodiverse setting is a treasure hoard

of natural wealth where mares and foals live in perfect harmony with the abundant fauna. As flawlessly describes Manenti, it is an ecosystem “with pasturelands peppered with helm and cork oaks, grasslands, riverine forests and marshlands.” Breeding PRE horses is an activity that is also an environmental management tool as these horses work towards sustainable and ecological maintenance of the Green Corridor. Manenti explains how the mares play their part in this essential role of environmental management: “they are responsible for the annual renovation of pastures, thus contributing to the conservation and ecological balance of protected scenery.” Horses are raised extensively. In other words, all equines feed on the pastures and live freely in totally a natural environment, thus

maintaining them healthy and fertile. Breeds have made this lifestyle their start breeding method. Goyo Aranda, owner of the Gregorio Aranda stud farm, is thrilled with this system. For him, the conditions are fantastic, which is seen in the fact that “in the past three years, we have had better products with no need for vitamin supplements. The Guadiamar basin fulfills all of the necessary requirements for the healthy development of the foals;” it also affects our profits.” Aranda points out that “at the beginning,
“horSeS are Raised in fReedom and wiTh limiTed human inTeRvenTion, which beneFitS the develoPmenT of The foals” 20
the horses had to adapt to such a breeding system; they had to look for food, water, shelter…. But right now, it is all advantages for the horses, as they live in freedom, with very little intervention, which benefits the development of the foals.” Currently, Aranda has 17 broodmares, with 15 having foaled. When it comes to comparing extensive with intensive breeding systems, Aranda comments that “breeders with an intensive operation are reluctant to let their horses go (freely). It is more costly and translates into more work. In our case, we compared the inconveniences with the advantages, and discovered that the advantages outweighed everything else. One of the inconveniences is when covering the mares, as you have to take them back to the stables.”
report
Guadiamar Equina breeders keep their horses in excellent conditions, both in terms of space and nutrition, which is impossible when horses are stabled or on small stud farms. As Gregorio Aranda explains, “When a horse is raised intensively, its nature becomes distorted. On the contrary, when horses are raised extensively, in freedom, they become immunized as they adapt to their environment.” Another breeder has signed up to this breeding model with no qualms. José Varo, a member of the Guadiamar Equina Board of Directors has established part of his stud farm (Yeguada Francisco Olivera)
“eXTensive bReeding helpS Reduce cosTs with which PRofiTs aRe gReaTeR than the eXpenSeS” 22
on the land with a maximum of 21 horses. For Varo, “the environment where these horses breed offers an ample diversity of trees and pastures that make up a magnificent and extraordinary landscape. The location is not accessible to all. By taking advantage of the surroundings, greater benefits are gained when breeding, with horses being better maintained at a lower cost. The pastures are very fertile; sometimes, the grass is so high that the foals are almost invisible. Extensive breeding helps reduce costs, so profits are greater than expenses.” Bid farewell to the landscape of the Guadiamar Green Corridor; it is an ideal place to breed PRE horses extensively. It is a place where the beauty of these horses is reflected in their quality, thus predicting a prosperous future for PRE breeding. ¡¡

befoRe beginning any type of genetic improvement process and the selection of breeding stock, the healthiness of the animals involved needs to be verified so that only the best stock is involved. Breeding is the foundation for the transmission of traits and characteristics to the next generation, and therefore, is the basis behind any breeding program. Thus, when selecting breeding stock that are to be the parents of the next generation, in addition to contemplating the values and genetic index (what traits they transmit to their progeny) of those parents, a breeder needs guarantees that his/her horses are healthy, can reproduce and not convey hereditary defects. Selecting breeding stock that is infertility or sterile is pointless. One problem that breeders face is infertility. In most cases, it is just a drawback, but rather, a major hindrance for animal reproduction. Infertility is associated with what nutrition, physiological problems, age 27

and hormone problems. There are a variety of factors leading to infertility, including anatomical abnormalities that could be caused by uterine cysts, which are easily recognizable by means of ultrasound. Infections or even endometritis are other caused of infertility. However, one of the most complex and difficult to diagnose causes of infertility is due to genetics. That is why the University of Cordoba, in collaboration with the University of Sevilla, has carried a research project that has just been patented. Behind this project is a research team that includes Gabriel Anaya Calvo-Rubio, Sebastián Demyda Peyrás, Miguel Moreno Millán, Mercedes Valera Córdoba, Alberto Membrillo Del Pozo and Antonio Molina Alcalá; due to the important repercussions of Purebred Spanish Horses (PRE) in the equestrian sector, this breed has been used to determine the effectiveness of the method as a diagnostic tool. fReQuenT geneTic alTeRaTions behind infeRTiliTy in eQuines . At the genetic level, most infertility is due to chromosomal disorders. Some examples include Turner syndrome, sex reversal syndrome and cell chimerism, which are behind 70–80% of the cases. Turner syndrome is when the female is lacking an X chromosome in full or in part (a normal female has two X chromosomes). Sex reversal syndrome is characterized by a discrepancy between gonadal and genetic sex. Females have the male chromosomal formula (2n=64,XY) while males present the female chromosomal formula (2n=64,XX). Lastly, cell chimerism is when a given individual has two 28

cellular lines that differ from its genetic origin. Although chimerism is quite common in cattle and considered rare among equines, an increase in incidence has been detected. It is a proven fact that genetic infertility has a greater incidence among horses than any other domesticated species. 50% of all equine infertility is due to genetics, with chromosome disorders being the main cause. These genetic disorders, present at birth, have no possible treatment and are physically invisible in horses, thus making them difficult to diagnose. Horses with such disorders are seemingly normal until puberty; upon reaching sexual maturity, reproductive problems begin to appear, which translates into wasted time and money for breeders. However, DNA testing detects these
azahara pérez
disorders at any age to save owners expenditures and efforts. The moleculaR meThod. DNA is extracted from a blood or hair sample to diagnose genetic disorders leading to infertility in equines. Then, that same sample is amplified using polymerase chain reaction (commonly known as PCR) techniques, with which the lab determines whether or not the horse’s genetics is normal or if it has any of the aforementioned syndromes. The cost for these tests, especially when compared to other more conventional diagnostic methods, is minimal; although prices may vary from country to country, in Spain, such a test costs around €20. For a breeder to have a greater guarantee regarding the reproductive state of his/her horses, all a breeder needs to do is

contact the MERAGEM Veterinarian Genetic Diagnostic Lab and request this test for his/her horses. The reliability rate of these tests is greater than 98.35%. In the case of horses, applying this new methodology at a tender age is a simple and practical way to rule out infertility due to chromosomic disorders and avoid unnecessary expenses when puberty begins. This testing also facilitates the early selection of horses as breeding stock, which together with the ability to transmit traits to their descendants will contribute to the propagation of genetic improvement among Purebred Spanish Horses; at the same time, it increases genetic progression in less time. These advances seek to increase both stud farm and breed feasibility and return on stud farm investment. ¡¡ Source: Gabriel Anaya Calvo-Rubio

How did you get started in the world of Purebred Spanish Horses? Since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by this breed. I was impressed with their special beauty, their human-like character and their excellent rideability. What are your priorities: sports, hacking, breeding, etc.? For the most part, our priority is with Dressage and to breed good, healthy horses with very good character. What does the future hold for PRE horses in your country? In Austria, the PRE is not as wellk now n a s i n G e r m a ny, but i n recent years, the bred is becoming
more popular. You find quite a few PRE horses in Dressage, Working Equitation and sometimes even other disciplines. We are the largest breeder in the country and we have to continue to breed good horses and offer high quality PRE, which is achieved thanks to the fantastic rearing conditions that we have. Likewise, we do a lot of advertising and travel to Horse Fairs and events. Increasingly more customers prefer the PRE, because of their particularly loving character for riding therapy. W h at d o yo u like m os t a b o ut Purebred Spanish Horses? It is the best bred I know. Their character is not comparable to any other breeds. They relate well with humans, are always, intelligent, courageous and eager to learn. It is a great pleasure to work with them, because of thei r w i lli ngness to please. Spanish Horses give their owners/riders their very best. It is the only breed that shows so much enthusiasm at work. When it comes to executing steps such as Piaffe and Passage, lead changes and Pirouettes are much easier to a PRE than for any other Horses. ¡ ¡

When it comes to equestrian sports in Spain, there are a number of Purebred Spanish Horses harvesting successes in Eventing, which is useful to show a new outlet for the PRE both in Spain, as well as other countries such as England and Denmark. Recently, Escamonda III, a mare owned by Bernardo Fernández García and bred by Ganadería Arpe, was proclaimed Competition Champion at a National Eventing Competiting (CNC 70 - CNC 80) in Brovst (Denmark). With fewer penalty points, she became the first PRE on an Eventing podium in a Nordic country. Escamondada III, ridden by Liebe Grüße, is a very versatile mare, with excellent physical and psychological stamina to jump obstacles and cross country, which she did without a single mistake. Currently, horse and rider are training for upcoming competitions where they will compete this summer and in the fall. ¡¡

During the course, organized by Yeguada de la CartujaHierro del Bocado, in Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz), Arancha Rodríguez, Director of the PRE ANCCE Stud Book, Pedro J. Azor, Assistant Director and Ignacio Bravo, member of the Technical Committee of Judges, spoke about a variety of topics. These included the current situation of the PRE Stud Book and its breeding program after the new norms were recently published. The various speakers also analyzed the development of the breed, the morphologic and functional traits of the breed in keep with breed quality, and the various selection and judging norms as well as the assessment of horses with regards to the breed quality. ¡¡
Conference titled “Orthopedic-Corrective Verification and Management of Alignment in Foals; Biomechanical Repercussions in their Development.” One of ANCCE’s main objectives is to train and improve knowledge within the sector. With this in mind, a number of conferences have been organized throughout Spain to provide breeders with information about topics of interest and the latest innovations. The latest of such endeavors—on June 22 at the ASAJA offices in Madrid—was a speech titled “OrthopedicCorrective Verification and Management of Alignment in Foals; Biomechanical Repercussions in their Development,” by Juan Carlos Blázquez, who is Specialized Non-Commissioned Officer with the Ministry of Defense. During the conference, organized in collaboration with Áureo Hernández, a member-at-large in Madrid, explained the life cycle of a horse from birth, which is when the first abnormalities may appear and be solved. He continued to review the various phases that need to be verified; he pointed
out disorders may arise and that will have repercussions on the horse’s development, including the consequences that will influence performance and functionality. A calendar of key moments was established for the most commonly seen incidence. This works to foresee problems that undoubtedly will play a role in a horse’s development and functionality. ¡¡

Good News for Equestrian Sports at Future Olympic Games New formulas to make equestrian sports more attractive have been debates for some time; thanks to this, such sports continue to be included in the Olympics. This ghost of doubt has floated over equestrian sports and especially over Dressage. However, both the approval of new formats presented by the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) and the fact that three disciplines have been maintained on the Olympic program are good news for sports. official fei communiQuÉ The President of the FEI confirmed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will include equestrian sports at the 2024 Olympic Games. Likewise, it approves the Olympic formats presented by the FEI for the 2020 Tokyo Games. “The confirmation from the IOC for the 2024 Olympic program and the approval of new formats for Tokyo 2020 is direct recognition of our willingness to adapt and modernize our sport. It has been well worth the work to promote change and increase universalism,” stated Ingmar De Vos, the FEI President after what he called “the approval for Tokyo means that we can now increase the number of flags in equestrian sports in keeping with the recommendations of the 2020 Agenda. With this, 30,000 registered athletes will be competing in our three disciplines.” 36
These new formats include teams of three, no score will be eliminated in Olympic disciplines (Eventing, Dressage and Jumping) and that reserve athletes (horses and riders) may be used due to medical reasons. Format changes were approves by National Federations that are members of the FEI at the General Assembly held just last year in Tokyo (Japan), after two years of consultations. ¡¡

The General Assembly appointed breeder and former President of ANCCE, Javier Conde Cerrato as the 2017 Honorary Member.

The 45th National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association (ANCCE) General Assembly was held in Badajoz. The event coincided with ECUEXTRE, the Horse and Fighting Bull Trade Fair. Among the many points on the agenda were to ratify the 2016 accounts, the 2017 budget (which surpasses 3.5 million euros) and agreements adopted by the Board of Directors. In his report, the President of ANCCE, Juan Tirado, stressed the importance of prioritizing Purebred Spanish Horse breeders who are members of ANCCE. “We continue to work for them and for ANCCE, which for years, has been the true benefactor 38
of the sector, and now, we must place the focus on those who really sustain our social structures with their personal efforts and wealth.” The Association is making painstaking efforts to maintain the services while creating new ones that benefit full-fledges members of ANCCE, but without generating loses. Such endeavors include economic backing for those practicing sports with PRE horses and new tests within the coverage of the Young Horse Selection Tests with reduced participation fees. Currently, ANCCE is focusing its efforts towards promoting PRE horses, both in Spain and abroad to position
ANCCE, the Purebred Spanish Horse (PRE) and SICAB as brands offered by Marca España. Regarding the PRE Stud Book (LG PRE ANCCE)—this year, ANCCE celebrates a decade handling the stud book—Tirado described the determinations of his predecessors who with their teams constituted and established the bases for the Stud Book. Today, those efforts have made the PRE Stud Book a world-class reference. He expressed his appreciation and rendered tribute to all those involved in the development and consolidation of the Stud Book, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Military Breeding Office (known
by most as Cría Caballar), breeders in the various Stud Book Commissions, veterinarians, employees and in general, all those who at any given moment, way, shape or form have helped ANCCE to celebrate its first decade handling the PRE Stud Book.
Lastly, the 2017 Honorary Member was granted to Javier Conde Cerrato. He is a breeder from Extremadura, owner of Yeguada Rafael Conde, former President of ANCCE and the current VicePresident of the PRE Stud Book Commission. ¡¡

ANCCE Promotional Stands at Competitions in Jerez, Segovia, Badajoz, Silleda and Valencia In the second half of the year, ANCCE will be in Reus (Tarragona), Armilla (Granada), at CDN3* Dos Lunas (Cadiz) and the Young Horse Selection Tests in Segovia.
Throughout 2017, the ANCCE Press and Promotions Commission has decided to continue to attend trade fairs, Conformation and Dressage Competitions with an Association Promotional Stand. At this stand, services will be offered as well as information for members, breeders and the general public regarding ANCCE activities, 42
projects and Stud Book services. Doubts and questions will also be answered; promotional material about the PRE as a breed will also be distributed. ANCCE invites all of its members in the various geographic locations to attend the traditional cocktail that will be served. In many cases, the events coincide with meeting of the

Executive Committee, Board of Directors, etc. Likewise, the stand will be a meeting place for breeders. Dates on the Commission’s agenda, where they are planning to attend include the Conformation Competitions in Reus (Tarragona) and Armilla (Granada), the CDN3* ANCCE Cup for Dressage in Dos Lunas (Cadiz) and the Young Horses Final in Segovia.¡¡
Recently, a series of improvements have been incorporated into the Private Zone on the ANCCE web site. One such improvement incorporates an interactive Google Map where ANCCE breeders may indicate the exact location of their stud farm. There are times when the address that appears on the breeder’s technical file (for example, in the public section of the web site), although correct, does not correspond to the exact location of the stud farm. Now, a breeder may offer internet users the exact location of the farm and a user–friendly guide for those who are interested in going to the stud farm. There is also direct access that marks the rout on your hand-held device. In addition to the location map, you may write in any additional indications that you deem necessary regarding how to reach the stud farm. The design of the private zone has been upgrades; it is now more intuitive an easier to use. Among the improvements, in the section “Liaison with Members,” there is an option that puts you into contact with members of the Commission and your local spokesperson. ¡¡ 43

ANCCE Upgrades its Competition App to Incorporate Web-Format Dressage Results and Rankings ANCCE has just upgrades its official Competition App for handheld devices with a number of innovations. The most outstanding is the Dressage results and ranking that is now available in web format. This, in turn, provides users with an improved display and data management. For now, competitions held in 2017 offer this format; work is underway to substitute the PDF results from previous years. This update has allowed existing Dressage and Conformation data to be combined with other results, classifications and scores for a given horse and all in one step. Likewise, all horses participating in Dressage are linked to the horse’s official family tree.
The App has been a success since it was implemented in 2015. That translates into 833,447 accesses! All in all, 3,231,000 web sites have been visited, with an average of six minutes spent on each. This certifies that the ANCCE App is a favorite among Purebred S p a n i s h Horse breeders to follow Conformation Competitions online, consult ANCCE Cup results for Dressage, Rules & Regulations, videos, photos,
genealogic data, search for historic competitions, etc. L a s t l y , remember that you can also advertise your stud farm on this App. To date, an average of 6000 visits see the banners daily, thus making the App an ideal publicity option to reach users (breeders, enthusiasts, grooms, riders and related industries from all over the world) in a direct, efficient and effective manner. A free results and information guide are just a click away! ¡¡

LATEST dEVELoPMENTS iN THE ANCCE CUP FoR dRESSAGE
PRE Horses are Alive and Well It could be stated that the recent statistics regarding Purebred Spanish Horses in the ANCCE Cup for Dressage are surprising and unexpected. In 2016, almost 500 horses were involved in this competition league. If these numbers are multiplied by the various participants in the contest arena over the past year, the result is truly encouraging. No doubt, a number of conclusions may be reached. The fiRsT of These is that there have been major changes in the breeding of PRE horses when it comes to competitive Dressage. This is followed by the fact that SICAB has become a world-class showcase as well as the most sought-after Dressage Final. Moreover, the sports market is not consolidated due to its stability and steadfastness when compared to other PRE market outlets. Lastly, the sector’s interest has become entrenched by the possibilities of PRE horses in competitions, from the very basic to high performance level. Of the many horses participating in the Seasonal Sports Program, both the results seen at SICAB as well as throughout this current season, prove the developments attained. The successes in the various categories are more than promising. ANCCE is working to improve the breed, for which breeder and stud farm participation is vital. To achieve this goal, two essential tools have been created to serve breeders and owners: the Seasonal Sports Program and the results-based
ANCCE scholarship. We consider that these formulas have positive effects for those taking advantage of them while at the same time helping us design a PRE Sports Plan. Also, we are convinced that integrated success is achievable, not through individual actions, but rather by launching a global project that contemplates a number of aspects. There are a growing number of high-quality and correct Spanish horses entering the arenas with solid preparation and training and that are better developed, both in competition and health terms. Another reason for hope is that there are a significantly greater number of quality horses in the arenas. If until now there were half a dozen excellent horses, and a large number of horses participating in the tests for young horses reached 66-68%, currently, the number of horses surpassing 70% is extremely high. In this regard, we have to ask what we want from the breed. Do we want a thousand horses with medium to high quality or a dozen exceptional horses?

inTeRnaTionaliZaTion of The ancce cuP Another area of interest is to take the ANCCE Cup a step upwards with its internationalization. This request is backed by PRE Breeder Associations in Europe and an already existing agreement to develop PRE competitions within the USA. In the United Kingdom, once an
agreement was signed between ANCCE and the British Association for the Purebred Spanish Horse, more than ten ANCCE Cup competitions have been held. These events have striven to respect all of the functioning and applicable Championship Rules and Regulations while at the same time maintain equality both nationally and abroad. translate in greater development of PRE horses outside Spain in the future, which will have a positive effect on sales and employment opportunities, thus expanding the market and its possibilities. Associations in a number of other countries have expressed interest— these include Sweden, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland—but for no agreements have been signed. Associations want their horses and riders to participate, but not through invitations; rather, they prefer to have a European ranking where they may qualify in their homeland to gain access to SICAB. In 2017, sixty-eight (68) qualification rounds providing access to the ANCCE Cup Final at SICAB have been planned, but this could increase, thus reducing expenses when travelling to competition and increase participation opportunities for riders. In these countries, the incorporation of PRE horses in sports will no doubt be progressive; but once a reality, such events will be the best 54
possible showcase for our horses in competition arenas. Competitions are always integrated and as in Spain, they are open events; in other words, other breeds are also competing. Competitions need to be organized in keeping with the corresponding rules, organized in keeping with national federation mandates, and always judged by experts to objectively guarantee compliance with all sportsrelated criteria. In the light of the future, ANCCE is working to create a large-format PRE competition for 2018. This would be yet another significant activity for interaction among breeders who are Dressage enthusiasts. Beyond all doubt, the number of PRE horses in sports continues to grow. Nevertheless, we must wait another year or two to see the results of these initiatives, but it is obvious that the progress of our horses, both in sports and other areas, it not the result of a single action, but rather the confluence of many seeking a single objective. For now, we must sew for the future. ¡¡

PRE Functionality Training Course Attendees during the course by Jorge Conde.
L
ast May, Jorge Conde Lázaro—who has a university degree in sports, is president of the ANCCE Dressage Commission, member of the Technical Committee of Judges and member of the National Technical Commission of Judges for Spain’s Equestrian Federation—taught a specialized training course about functionality in Purebred Spanish Horses. He analyzed each of the natural paces found in PRE horses through videos to view the horses as athletes. In this regard, he pointed out that one “need not be a judge to see what the horse offers; when a horse shows good length of stride, is elastic, lacks tension and shows suspension, everybody likes it.” Likewise, he stressed that “the sight of a muscular and healthy horse is much more beautiful than a fat horse that has a hard time moving and that cannot develop all of its potential due to a lack of training.” He also pointed out the importance of preserving breed quality and to consider
60
horses not only as a breed but also as a species: “we need to look for a more complete horse, one with breed quality but at the same time, good movements; a horse that is strong and athletic.” Having clarified the theory, it was time for practical application with the presentation of horses under saddle where their paces could be assessed. According to Conde, “in the arena, a horse may have a good day or maybe not. One day a horse moves well, but the next day, it’s not so good. It all depends on internal and external factors. That is precisely what one should not compare the scores of a given horse at the various competitions.” Once the presentation concluded, Asocaman-PRE thanked breeders for attending, Jorge Conde for sharing his knowledge about PRE functionality and Yeguada Sanz Roldán for its hospitality and willingness to host the training course at its facilities. ¡ ¡

USPRE Encourages and Supports PRE Horses for International Dressage Competitions in the USA The USEF team offered two clinics for riders with PRE horses. horses and riders. Spanish horses have been invited to participate in the Festival of Champions, in all FEI categories (Grand Prix, National Circuit, U-25 and juniors). However, there is still unfinished business, which is to have a PRE on the national team representing the United States. USPRE is of the opinion that by creating SID, it will foster the search for high quality PRE horses and riders to become members of a program dedicated to USEF teams. In 2017, the SID program consists of two observation clinics by the USEF Dressage team. The first is on the 7th and 8th of July, in central California at Mountain View Sports Horses; it will be taught by Olympic medal winner Charlotte Bredahl. The second clinic will be in Wellington, Florida this fall, but the dates are yet to be established. Florida and California are the chosen venues due to the number of international competitions and the many Purebred Spanish Horses in the area. The program, titled USPRE Sport Initiative for Dressage (SID), seeks to contribute to the development of riders with PRE horses and at all FEI levels (Juniors, Young Riders, U-25, Young Horses and Adults) to reinforce the participation of PRE horses on the US national team. Throughout the past decade, the participation of PRE horses in US Dressage Federation competitions and CDI event has increased exponentially. Nevertheless, a yet to be achieved goal is to have PRE horses on the US Dressage team in Grand Prix. Years of promotion have proven that PRE horses are a feasible alternative in elite sport, as they have attained very important objectives at national and international championships. e British Association for the Purebred Spanish Horse Ltd (BAPSH Ltd) was founded in September of 1982. The following year, it was officially recognized in the United Kingdom to collaborate with the PRE Stud Book office working for owners and breeders of PRE horses. For the past ten years, this organization has enjoyed an excellent relationship with ANCCE and as a collaborating association to handle all of the requests/applications for owners and breeding living with the country, plus other essential ANCCE paperwork.
eXPecTaTions foR 2017 This year, we are also expecting around 85 PRE foals on the 34 stud farms located in Scotland, England and Wales. By May, 27 foals had already been born, of which three failed to survive—18 fillies and 6 colts. Usually the sex ration is
2016 RegisTRaTion daTa There were 86 foals born in the UK in 2016, comprising of 46 fillies and 40 colts. This is an increase in births compared to the previous year but still nowhere near the annual births of 120 or more per year before the world financial crash. Today, 97% of these foals are registered with all their paperwork complete or in the process of being issued. In recent years, there has been a marked shift in the colors of the PRE foals born in the United Kingdom, moving from predominantly gray foals to 25% gray and the rest being bay (25 horses), black (12), chestnut (11), buckskin (8), smokey-black (5), perlino (2) and cream-pearl (1). Throughout the country, 34 different stud farms have bred Purebred Spanish horses, with 2 in Scotland, 4 in Whales and 28 in England (11 south, 9 Midlands and 8 in the North). The most popular horses are Albino XII and Cortijero XXIII, sired five foals each, closely followed by Kamborio VI y Pinturero P II that sired four foals respectively. Guardamas I, a qualified breeder, and six other stallions sired three foals each. The other 36 stallions sired mostly a couple of foals each. It is good to see several UK bred stallion siring their first foals. The annual average for Spanish imports over the past ten years has been a hundred horses per year and 2016 was no exception with 99 horses registered as imports from Spain. Sports Horse classes, Conformation, Dressage and Show-Jumping, as well as a specific class known as Spanish Tack & Turnout. Many are looking forward to the National PRE Championship, to be held from the 27th to the 30th of July. It will be the second show run by the recently formed GBPRE, following on from 30 years of direct organization by BAPSH Ltd. Last year, BAPSH Ltd also granted GBPRE the opportunity to develop PRE specialist dressage competitions, training clinics enhance social media and membership systems to promote the PRE across the country. This spring has seen GBPRE hold some popular training clinics covering techniques for ANCCE morphology and functionality classes. Good results have been achieved in the Dressage GBPRE classes for PREs, the final of which is on November 5th. It is good to see our wonderful PRE horses benefiting from the promotion that two organizations can achieve in different ways. PRe hoRses and show JumPing Show-jumping PRE horses are increasingly popular for owners. In fact, the successes of a young British-bred PRE mare, Soleada VII, and her owner/rider, Amy Clithero—daughter of Soleada’s breeder—has generated a lot of interest and excitement. This six year old mare has four generations of British breeding via her dam, going back to the early 1980 Carthusian bloodline imports and her sire, Jubileo, and her dam’s father, Legionario LXI were both imported directly from the Pedro de Cardenas stud farm. Amy acquired Soleada as an untrained 4 year old that went backwards, not forwards. So Amy took the horse out hunting all through
the winter of 2015/16 and this experience created a very forward going mare with great trust in her rider. At the end of the hunting season, Amy entered the Bedale Hunt Hunt Ride for fun, not realizing the huge size of the natural jumps on this course; but little Soleada, standing just 1.53 meters, tackled them with great courage and never a sign of stopping. That was when Amy realized that Soleada had real show jumping potential and decided to concentrate on this sport. Throughout 2016, Soleada has consistently gained experience at all types of venues. Earlier this year, Amy and Karen decided to take Soleada VII and her half-brother Agallieo (7th in Show Jumping at SICAB 2015) to Spain to compete against all breeds at the Sunshine Tour in Vejer (in the province of Cadiz). After two days of jumping, Amy moved her up to the 1.20m class where she placed 26th out of 61 entrants. At the beginning of March, coinciding with the last two weeks of the tour, Amy decided to enter her horse in the CSIYH* (6 yrs.) class, with the jumps at 1.25m. The little mare showed no sign of hesitation and an unfortunate pole down prevented her from placing. Upon returning to the United Kingdom, horse and rider took part in the Royal Windsor Horse Show. It was the first time a PRE had been seen at this prestigious competition and she showed her possibilities in Show Jumping! In the United Kingdom, the PRE has a bright future in Show Jumping, Eventing and Dressage. Mary McBryde (Director) The British Association for the Purebred Spanish Horse Ltd (www.bapsh.co.uk). ¡¡

Abelardo Morales Purón, new President of ANCCEMEX 2017 ANCCEMEX Assembly
R
ecently, ANCCEMEX held its Annual Assembly, where the 2017-2019 Board of Directors was introduced, with the President being Abelardo Morales Purón. The governing board includes Óscar José Quintana Pérez as vice-president, Federico Jiménez Celorio as secretary, José Antonio Cifrián as treasurer, with Lourdes Ariza Alduncín, Esteban Álvarez Vega, Fernando González Cimadevilla, Víctor González de Pablos, Federico Jiménez Sainz, Ismael Medina Cruz, Carlos Mouriño Terrazo, Gabriel Posada Cueto, Joaquín Quintana Pérez, Alberto Schutte Elguero, Francisco Talavera Autrique, Ramón Trespalacios Audiffred and Leopoldo Vidal Sosa as members-at-large. Jaime Molina, the ANCCE General Director was on hand for the General Assembly. Fernando González, the outgoing president of ANCCEMEX began his speech by listing each of the commitments acquired and met in 2016, including the association’s web site upgrade, the creation of a procedures manual for breeders and/or representatives with all essential forms, update all requests for service from ANCCEMEX members and update the stud farm status application. ANCCEMEX was founded in 2010 with 119 members; today, there are 148 members. Throughout last year, the association provided 1,741 services, most of which 576 were the registration of foals. In 2013, a specific service was created, known as Registro Fuera de Plazo (Postdeadline Register) for those who failed to register their horses on time; however, since then, we have seen that this option is being used less and less, which translates in greater awareness on behalf of breeders when it comes to having documents turned in on time. Last year, we received to Revision Visits, one in March and the other in September. All in all, 465 horses were examined, of which 434 were approved. Likewise, 350 changes of ownership were processed. The number of Parentage Verification Services increased, as did the number of Breeder Codes being granted. During his speech, José Antonio Cifrián, responsible for the ANCCEMEX Championships, pointed out that “2016 was a complex year as there were four competitions: Aguascalientes Regional
64
in May, the September National Competition in Puebla, Guadalajara Regional in October, and the San Miguel de Allende Regional in November that congregated more than 420 horses.” On the other hand, Lourdes Ariza expressed her appreciation for the confidence shown in her skills organizing the ANCCEMEX 2016 Dressage Tour. Every year, this event has more and more PRE horses. She pointed out that “instilling enthusiasm in children teaches them perseverance, determination, effort, confidence, responsibility, respect and discipline.” Óscar Quintana, the ANCCEMEX treasurer, confirmed the association’s solid economy. He reported that the 2017 budget is smaller than the previous year as there will be one less competition and that the membership fee will be the same to not affect members. Also, he confirmed that “currently, the championships, in addition to being a major forum to promote the Purebred Spanish horse, are not a hardship for ANCCEMEX, which is an important achievement.” Prior to the conclusion of the Assembly, welldeserved tribute was rendered to Núñez for his passion and dedication to PRE horses. Núñez has been in Mexico for 52 years and has dedicated his life to promoting the joys and characteristics of the Purebred Spanish Horses. Source: Passion PRE. ¡¡
