United We Stand ANCCE HAS ALWAYS respected justice, even, on occasion, when we have not seen eye to eye with certain judicial rulings, which have been appealed in an effort to defend our legitimate rights. A few weeks ago, the High Court in Madrid issued a sentence regarding the contested administrative procedure that the UCCE (Unión de Criadores de Caballos Españoles) lodged against the resolution by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture denying their handing the PRE Stud Book. ANCCE, for obvious reasons, was part of that case. FIRST oF ALL, I must clarify that this is not a final sentence; it may be appealed before the Supreme Court. That stated, and in an effort to avoid controversy, I believe that this is excellent news for the PRE sector, and not only because the Courts have initially accepted the thesis defended by our Association, but also because the sector, at least for now, will continue to be united. I BELIEVE THAT in a world whose general vocation is the universalization of all concepts, it is a mistake to believe in fiefdoms, and even less if these pretensions fail to respond to general interests. In Spain, horses, in my opinion, have yet to achieve substantial recognition as a true livestock breeding nucleus; moreover, we continue to carry the burden of long-gone fame as an elite class who is farremoved from the presence of rural and agricultural life. This, in fact, differs greatly from the current reality. oUR WoRK, in keeping with the many other equine breeder associations, must be joint efforts to replace these outdated prejudices that continue to affect us; we need to come together and endeavor to create –following the model of other major European Union countries– national bodies that handle the common interests of the sector, both before Spain’s public administration and the European Union. Matters such as premiums from the CAP, applicable VAT for the sales of horses, establishing national transportation networks that improve, facilitate and reduce export costs and many other important matters facing breeders must all be undertaken from a general point of view. A Ministry, whether Agriculture, Commerce or Internal Revenue, cannot work with an atomized sector requesting depersonalized appointments where at each meeting a proposition is defended that has not even been agreed to previously from the stand point of the common good. DURING THE REST of my term as President, I want to focus my efforts upon helping to create this body; an entity that gives horses in Spain a single voice, independently of the fact that each breed is autonomous based on its own unique characteristics. I am sure that if we are able to achieve this object, the results will be immediate. THAT IS THE REASoN for my happiness in the light of this sentence. I do not want to interpret it as an enemy’s defeat, but rather a solid step forward in the constitution of a truly strong equine sector, which is what we really need.

Very Promising Level among Young Horses TEXT & PHOTO: LiLY FORADO

t

THRoUGHoUT the season, the number of national ANCCE Cup Qualification Competitions is tremendous. Being among the top ten to guarantee a place at SICAB is the main motivation and major encouragement for both breeders and riders. Many horses gallop to the two and three star national competitions within the scope of the ANCCE Cup. However, there are always a few that are most outstanding and earn score that are well above the average. This op-ed article is based upon a statistical study of 2017 national competition averages. It includes events held between January and August; its selection criteria is 75% for young horses between 4 and 6 years of age and 70% for 7-year-old horses. 4 YEARS At most competitions, there are more horses in the 4-year-old class than any other. Molinero FS, owned by Yeguada Arroyomonte, is the only horse to surpass the 80% barrier. More specifically, it was at a CDN3* held near the

cartas Villa de Mardid Country Club that he showed his worth. Currently, he leads the ANCCE Cup classification roster. Having entered the competition arena six times, his scores have been constant and always above 77%. The judges appreciate the quality of his paces, with this being seen in the final score. Molinero FS is a participant in ANCCE’s Seasonal Sports Plan. He performs a very regular, rhythmic, elastic and well-suspended trot. Undoubtedly, he is well-balanced at canter, with self-sustain and strength. In this same category, there is another horse to keep an eye on: Troyano Mor from Yeguada las Morerías. With only four entries in the arena, his averages have surpassed 74%. Most outstanding was his 76.200% at the final for 4-year-olds at CDN2* in Segovia. Yeguada Benítez Rodríguez e Hijos has several horses competing in a variety of categories. One of them is Atreo BRH, son of Impaciente II, one of the Purebred Spanish Horses and forerunners of breed promoters in international arenas. His height, strength and upper line are well defined, these are but a few of the traits inherited from his father. His averages are around 73%-74%, with his highest being at CDN2* CECYL where he earned a score of 77.200% during the preliminary test. 5 YEARS The 5-year-old class is when counter-canter is introduced; it is where the judge assesses the horse’s balance and its ability to sustain itself, as well as its ability to carry weight on his hind legs. In this category, noteworthy

horses are Albus VDOS, owned by Francisco Fernández Puertas and bred by Hnos. Camacho Benítez; Ulterior PI, from Yeguada AC Esp and bred by Yeguada Piqué Ángel; Luz FS, from Yeguada Arroyomonte; Sonajero ARB, owned by CDE Montuenga and bred by Yeguada San Antonio; and Poeta Susaeta, from Yeguada Susaeta. This latter horse leads the 5-year-old ranking. His averages, both nationally and internationally, speak for themselves. Albus VDOS has only entered the arena four times, but he is the only horse to surpass the 80% mark. More specifically, this bay horse has an average of 80.400%. He descends from the Camacho Benitez bloodlines, and is an obvious candidate to stand against Poeta de Susaeta when seeking victory in the ANCCE Cup Final. The current ANCCE Cup Reserve Champion –in the 4-yearold category– Ulterior PI, has only competed once this season. His average was 76.400% in the preliminary and 78.200% in the final. This places him 22nd in the ranking. Ridden by Juan Lecina, we hope he qualifies for SICAB, as this is a very competitive horse and could be a true rival for Albus VDOS. Luz FS is the only mare with averages above the aforementioned scale and she is breaking all records. She is fifth in the ranking. This bay mare is the daughter of Kabileño VIII, one of the most important bloodlines at Yeguada Marín García. 6 YEARS C Castelnovo, from Yeguada Castelnovo; Pabellón Erre, from

Yeguada Ramírez; Mimbrero AS, owned by Yeguada Las Fuentecillas and bred by Antonio San Román Morán; and Oficial de Susaeta, from Yeguada Susaeta, are the top five in the category for 6-year-olds. Both C Castelnovo and Oficial de Susaeta have competed at several international CDIs in Spain to boast very constant averages. Without any doubt, a horse that is more than worthy of mention is Joyero JF IV, from Yeguada J.F. Miño. His highest score was 78.200% at the CDN2* in Murcia, in the category for 6-year-olds. At that same event, Quincallo de Índalo, from Yeguada Índalo and current bronze medal winner at SICAB 2016 in the category for 5-yearolds, is in the race with very high averages –precisely 76.200%. The SICAB battle ground awaits! 7 YEARS All eyes are on the flagship mares from Yeguada Arroyomonte in Avila: Joya FS and Jara FS. At the moment, they are enjoying the best results in this class, and will possibly qualify among the top three at SICAB. When it comes to stallions, the only with an average above 70% is Duende MB, owned by Antonio Martos Bermúdez. This horse also competes on the international scene. SICAB is just three months away. During these next few months, breeders and riders will be trying to classify their horses. Many of them already have outstanding averages, well above 75%. Unquestionably, it will be a very competitive edition, as the quality of the horse improves year after year. ¡¡

THE LEgAcY oF PUREbREd sPAnIsH HoRsEs Their influence on European Breeds

t

TEXT: AZAHARA PÉREZ

THE PUREbREd sPAnIsH HoRsE is one of the oldest riding horses in the world; but did you know that is also the father and improver of many other breeds throughout the world? Crossbreeding with PREs has always been popular, both in Spain and abroad. Observation show the success of other breeds such as the Hispano-Arab –considered one of the most beautiful– that perfectly combines the good personality and strength of the PRE with the liveliness and resistance of the Arab horse. The same holds true for the Anglo-Hispano-Arab, commonly known “three blood” or Spanish Anglo-Arab; a very popular combination in southern Spain when working with cattle and at Doma Vaquera competitions. There are other breeds in which PRE blood is dominating, as in the case of Lusitano and Lipizzan horses. However, there are many unique breeds that although they descend directly from the PRE, there is nothing today that would even indicate such heritage.

Herein is a brief list of European breeds rooted in the Purebred Spanish Horse legacy. EURoPE luSITAnO (PORTugAl) Close at heart to the PRE, Lusitano horses are a sports breed enjoying rapid popularity in Dressage. This Portuguese horse and the PRE are rooted in the same origins. In 1748, John V of Portugal created the Royal Portuguese Stables for the House of Braganza. He imported 300 Spanish mares and several stallions, from which the AlterReal breed was born. At a later date, these were divided into two bloodlines: Andrade and Vegia, thus leading to the birth of the current Lusitano horse. With the invasion of Napoleon, the breed lost purity due to uncontrolled crossbreeding; however, its initial breed quality was recuperated in 1910 by re-Introducing new Purebred Spanish Horses under the government of the First Portuguese Republic. 11

report lIPIzzAn (AuSTRIA) These horses were chosen to represent the oldest riding school in the world: the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Lipizzan or Lipizzaner horses are closely linked to the PRE as they share the same origins as the Barbs. Today, these horses are extremely popular in Austria. Initially, the breed was much more widespread and found in Szilvasvarad (Hungry), Kladruby (Czech Republic), Topol’čianky

and Lipica (Slovenia), with this latter being the root for the breed’s name. Six sire stallion were the foundation for this breed: Pluto, a Frederiksborg that arose from crossing a PRE with a Neapolitan; Conversano, a Neapolitan of Italian origin; Neapolitano, a Neapolitan horse; Favory, a Kladruber of Spanish origin; Siglavy, a Purebred Arab Horse and Maestoso, a Kladruber,

but son of a PRE mare. The Lipica Stud Farm--the origin of the breed’s name--was founded in 1580 under the rule of Charles II, Archduke of Austria thanks to the selection of nine sires and 24 mares, all Purebred Spanish Horses. Thanks to their beauty, athletic build and versatility, these horses were chosen to breed elite horses for royalty; the breed was useful for riding, hunting, driving and Haute Ecole, or high school. Spanish riding was established well before relocating in Vienna, in 1521, at the hand of King Charles I of Spain (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor), through his brother Ferdinand I, who would become the new Archduke of Austria. Later, in 1565, Charles II created the Royal Spanish Riding School and supplied the school with Spanish horses; the first infrastructure was built in 1572. Nevertheless, it was not until 1729 when Emperor Charles VI commissioned architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach with the task of building the Winter School at the Hofburg Palace, a task that concluded in 1735. The word Spanish was included in its name to honor the pioneering horses that founded the center and today’s Lipizzaner horses. With the downfall of the AustroHungarian Empire, the Republic of Austria decided to maintain the school as a public service and organize programmed visits.

KlAdRuBER (CzECH REPuBlIC) The Kladruby Stud Farm is the oldest stud farm in the world, founded by Emperor Maximilian II. Coinciding with the history of Lipizzaner horses, Maximilian II ordered the construction of a breeding center in the Karst area, which was later used by Charles V to cross Spanish horses with Neapolitan Horses. Thanks to this, Kladrubers were commonly known as “Karst” horses, thus making them the only native horses from the former Czechoslovakia, used to pull imperial carriages. Today, PRE genetics continue to be visible in the breed. Over the decades, these horses have gained considerable height, with

FREdERIKSBORg (dEnMARK) King Federick II of Denmark founded the Royal Frederiksborg Stud Farm in 1562 by importing Spanish and Neapolitan horses to improve the native breed. Later, these horses were crossed with Arabs and Thoroughbreds to obtain a more sporty horse. Thanks to their noble character and aptitudes for carriage driving they became evermore popular as a riding horse, and were very much in demand to improve other breeds, such as the Jutland horse. Pluto, a sire stallion and one of the six Lipizzaner founding fathers, became the starting point for one of the most important bloodlines. Unfortunately, by the end of the 19th Century, the breed suffered a variety of influences to obtain one variant for carriage driving and another for sports, thus making way for the current Danish Warmblood. Today, the original breed is hardly visible, as the success of the Danish Warmblood and other crosses carried out over the years has led to the breed being on the verge of extinction. KnABSTRuPPER (dEnMARK) The spotted horses of the north are unique when compared to other European breeds. They are exceptional due to the fact that they appear in a wide range of colors with leopard spotted coats. Not only are they very athletic, but they also have a very Baroque morphology, reminiscence of their Spanish origins. Their beginnings go back to 1683 when a sire stallion named Superbe arrived from a Monastery in Jerez to the stud farm in Frederiksborg where Knabstrupper horses were developed. Years later, Flaebehoppen, an appealingly grey PRE mare, arrived from Cordoba with Spanish troops during the Napoleonic Wars. Villars Lunn, a Judge who at the

15

report time owned Knabstrupgaard Manor in Nord Sealand, purchased her from a butcher, who had bought her from a Spanish official stationed in Denmark. Flaebe had very unusual colors that caught the eye of Lunn: reddish with a white mane and tail, covered with spots similar to snowflakes. It is thought that this trait might be specific to gray horses with white, black and red hair. In 1812, the mare was covered by a Frederiksborg stallion (descendent of Superbe); Flaebestallion, a colt with an unusual coat was born; based on the descriptions of the time, he had a multi-color metallic shine. All of Flaeb’s progeny boasted very striking marks, such as Mikkel, born in 1818 and also the son of her half-brother Flaebestallion. Despite the high percentage of inbreeding, Mikkel was born healthy, and proved to be a highly successful sports horse and very successful race horse, thus granting the original Knabstrup horses visibility. This information is possible thanks the memories of Villars Lunn on file. SwEdISH wARMBlOOd (SwEdEn) Known by the abbreviation SWB, the Swedish Warmblood is an extremely popular Show Jumping horse, although it is also seen in Dressage competitions. Currently, the breed is more popular in the United States than in its own country of origin. Created as a military horse, its history dates back to the year 1600 when PRE, Friesian and oriental horses were bred with native breeds. Such crossbreeding gave way to a solid horse that was ideal for riding and pulling carriages. Years later, these resulting horses were once again bred with Thoroughbreds, Trakehners, Hanoverians and Arabs, thus altering their more classic lines. The breed’s first stud book was created in 1874; to be included, all horses must pass strict controls that review their conformation, personality and qualities for sports. In the case of stallions, these must perform functionality tests for a variety of equestrian disciplines. 16

Cavalry Squadron at the time of King Philip V of Spain.

Such stringent selection has led to some of the horses seen today in competition arenas. FRIESIAn (THE nETHERlAndS) Today, the breed is extremely popular, but it was born as a carriage horse with apparently more in common with a Percheron draft horse than a riding horse. When Spain ruled the Low Countries (Spanish Netherlands) in the 16th Century, Spanish bloodlines greatly influenced this breed. This refined the horse, thus making is the more

elegant breed we see today, but at the same time it has retained its characteristic gentile personality and black coat. This renewed Friesian was so successful that it played a major role in the improvement of many other breeds such as the Fell, Morgan, Shire and Welsh Pony. SAlERnITAnO (ITAlY) Relatively unknown for the rest of Europe, the Salerno horse is also known as Salernitano. This breed appeared in the Italian provinces

beautiful curves, a convex and Roman profile, well-proportioned but without forsaking the robust body of a carriage horse. Greys predominate and account for 80% of the herd’s population; from there, the nickname of White Marble Horse. The rest are chestnuts and in a few cases, black or dark bay.

of Maremma and Salerno thanks to the crossbreeding to Neapolitan, Spanish and native breeds. Later, these same horses were bred with Thoroughbreds for today’s current physique destined, for the most part, to sports. Although they are waning in popularity, this breed proves to have good qualities for Show Jumping. Memorable horses include Posillipo, Merano and Fiorello, who were all Olympic winners between 1956 and 1972. COnnEMARA POnY (IRElAnd) Purebred Spanish Horses not only founded and improved riding breeds, but also influenced carriage horses and ponies such as the Connemara. Today, this breed continues to boast the traits of its ancestors and to such an extent that they seem to be a miniature Spanish Horse. These ponies are descendants of native Celtic horses along the Irish coasts. In the 16th Century, when King Philip II of Spain sent his Armada (known in Spanish as the Invincible) against the ships of Queen Elisabeth I of England, the Armada drowned and ran ashore near British coasts. It is suspected that some horse swam to the beach and mixed with local breeds. This, together with the commercial ties between Spain and the city of Galway, reinforced these crosses. That is why these ponies lost

their primitive appearance to become more athletic. One of the breed’s most famous sire stallions was Dundrum; he was hardly 1.43 meters in height, but was able to jump a 2.13 meter obstacle. Highland ponies are closely related to the Connemara, as they all share the same Celtic origins. French and Spanish horses, including the Percheron, were taken to the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century and have greatly influenced this breed. Despite the influence of Spanish bloodlines, these ponies have retained their more primitive physique, with mouse gray coats being the most commonly seen, in addition to a dorsal stripe or zebra makings. Today, here are some 5,500 ponies, thus granting the consideration of endangered species. BOulOnnAIS (FRAnCE) Also known as White Marble Horse, the Boulonnais carriage horse is native to northeastern France. It was born as a military horse and an important a member of the Roman Army under Julius Caesar. In the 17th Century, during the Crusades, this breed was greatly influenced by Arab and Spanish bloodlines. Today, the Arab characteristic are almost invisible, but a certain air of PRE is still very present with the Boulonnais being a very stylish carriage horse with

nORIKER (AuSTRIA) The Noriker is one of the most peculiar draft horses. They are from the Roman province of Noricum – modern-day northern Austria– where winter temperatures reach -30º (C). Julius Caesar and his legions carefully selected native horses in search of specific traits as they needed strong draft horses that were able to support the cold weather. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Neapolitan and Spanish horses were incorporated to improve resistance; after years of systematic selection, those efforts have resulted in the horse we know today while at the same time, they have lost most of their Iberian characteristics. These horses have a powerful and very robust build, short lines and with an average height of 1.65 m. Black, bay and chestnut coats are commonplace. In the area Pinzgau, a speckled variation was born, and is known as the Noriker-Pinzgauer. Undoubtedly, for the Purebred Spanish Horse, there are no geographical limits. From the very beginning of its history, the breed has enjoyed major popularity. In Europe alone, it has left an unsurpassable legacy by contributing unique characteristics to each breed, while at the same improving many others. Nonetheless, the PRE has not limited its conquests to Europe. In 1492, with the discovery of America, the new world was flooded with Spanish Horses, to become the great-greatgreat sires and dams of legendary Wild West breeds. New South Wales (Australia) welcomed the first equines in 1788; among these were a number of PRE horses that paved the way for the Australian Stock Horse. ¡¡ 17

Ícaro MG, a sire stallion born in 2008, owned by Hierro MG and bred by Yeguada Candau, was the only PRE competing at the World Dressage Mecca: CHIO in Aachen (Germany). Experience is know-how and Claudio Castilla proved this fact riding a Purebred Spanish Horse; initially, the pair performed a very fluid and harmonious test with outstanding flying changes and in the second piaffe. The extended trot showed the strength that Ícaro MG boasts in his hindquarters. Their final average was 66.540%, which qualified them for the Freestyle. On Saturday, the 5th of August, the pair danced to the music, literally. Claudio maintained his confidence to perform the exercise in a correct

and simple manner. The music was well synchronized, both for the trot and the canter. Their performance offered two exceptional moments, such as a very springy passage, and beautiful flying changes. Being the only PRE in the test, the final average was 70.225%, thus placing them in seventh place. Keep an eye on this horse and rider! Remember that for Ícaro MG, this is his first season as an international in Grand Prix. He premiered at CDI in Medina Sidonia with averages that were above 67% and 72% in the Freestyle. An interesting side note: at SICAB 2015 he was Champion on the class for 7-year-olds and last year (2016) he place third in the Gran Prix. ¡¡

Recently, Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports has created a new degree linked to the equestrian world; it is a Vocational Training (Junior College) Degree as Equestrian Activity Instructor. The legislation governing this new academic degree came into force on July 8th when it was published in the Official State Gazette, listed as Royal Decree 652/2017 dated the 23rd of June, that provides all of the specifications and mandates. This degree falls within the professional family of Physical and Sports Activities, which is 2000 credit-hour course. This new degree covers the handling and care of equines throughout all of the various productive phases, as well as the undertaking of guided activities along equestrian trails. Special emphasis is given to animal safety and well-being, the use of facilities, machinery and equipment for such tasks. Likewise, the course covers legislation applicable to animal welfare, on-the-job risk and hazard prevention and environmental protection. Currently, this activity is motivating economic turnover and growth at all levels, from tourist initiatives and even the purchase-sales of equines. Also, it works to improve and 20

promote equine breeds that have contributed, to a great extent, to the efforts of breeder associations, which has translated in an economic breakthrough for the sector. Finally, it must be stated that this new employment niche has increased the skills of its technicians, and not only from the professional point of view, but regarding the breeding of horses, training, dressage, shoeing and other equestrian related activities, whether recreational, nature-related or for sports. It has also elevated personal and social growth, such as teamwork, conflict resolution, prevention and safety, environmental protection and animal welfare. In summary, it has improved quality at all levels. ¡¡

Araceli Pons and Mejorano V.

Indiferent & Mejorano V Represent Spain at the 2017 European Dressage Championship for Junior at Roosendaal (Holland) Junior riders, both females and males from 27 different countries, travelled to Roosendaal (Holland) to participate in the European Dressage Championship for Juniors held from Wednesday, the 9th to Sunday, the 13th of August. In the category for Children, Spain was represented by two Purebred Spanish Horses: Indiferent, owned by Eugassada Germans Ribera and ridden by Jessica Castro, and Mejorano V, bred by Yeguada Bauza, owned by José Manuel Pons Sintes and ridden by Araceli Pons. After the corresponding veterinarian inspections on Tuesday, the event began on the 9th with the first tests for Junior and Young Riders. On Thursday the 10th, the two PREs representing Spain in the Preliminary for Children entered the arena. Mejorano V had an average of 68.333% while Indiferent earned 65.433%.

On Saturday, during the test for teams, Mejorano V was, undoubtedly, one of the pairs leading the Spanish team. They placed 15th on the roster (68.100%) performing an excellent test, which allowed them a place in the individual final. For the general classification, Indiferent was among the top 20. Mejorano V returned to the arena on Sunday for the individual final where only the first five qualify. Once again, horse and rider performed a very correct test to earn an average of 67.219%. This gave them a welldeserved fourteenth place on the general European Championship roster, where the level of the many participants was extremely high. The story of Araceli and Mejorano V is worthy of mention. Carlos Torrell, when at a clinic he gave in Menorca,

FEI Campus, a New Platform to Prepare the Equestrian Sector The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) has launched their FEI Campus; a free portal that seeks to teach each and every aspect of the equestrian world. It targets horse enthusiasts and equestrian sports with a solidarity project that has online resources. These courses have been prepared by equestrian experts to include a wide range of contents, from training horses to stable management, without forsaking many other aspects such

as equine behavior, advice about educational programs and veterinarian needs. There is also specific content for the training and certification of Judges. The platform offers a timely updates and information reflecting the general interests of the equestrian community; a community with a rapid growth rate. Today, there are some 750 million followers. One of the main objectives of the tool is its reduced cost for FEI officials,

noticed a young rider with tremendous potential, and her horse show equally extraordinary abilities for the children’s class. With this, Torrell promoted Araceli’s, career and trained her to become a member of the Elite Plan for Minors. Two days later, the pair debuted at the CDN 2* nationals in Barcelona; a month later, Araceli Pons was riding Mejorano V at international venues. They premiered at CDI in Valencia, where their averages on all three days never dipped below 67%; they were always among the top three. They were most outstanding thanks to their 70.192% average on the first day. These successes were followed by CAVA Internationals (Barcelona) and in Segovia; always with very consistent and regular averages. The greatest moment of the season was the European Championship. ¡¡

who may access this information anytime and anywhere in the world, whether as a refresher course or to start from square one in a given area of knowledge. Thus, costly travel is avoided, which helps reduce training costs for national federations. No doubt, these courses are not a substitute for handson, practical sessions. The contents offered on the platform are extremely interesting. They are easy to remember and accessible for the international equestrian community that is always on the go. This is just the beginning of the FEI Campus. New materials and courses will be added throughout the year. ¡¡ 21

General Assembly of Spain’s Federation of Horse Breeder Associations (FEACC); Future Work Agreements Established & New Proposals Presented before the Ministry This past July, ANCCE provided its offices in Sevilla to host the General Assembly of Spain’s Federation of Horse Breeder Associations (FEACC). The Assembly sought to establish the criteria that will govern the body’s work both in the long-term and in the upcoming months. The Federation, integrated by eight associations in Spain that handle their corresponding stud books, analyzed and pinpointed the main problems affecting the equine sector and breeders with registered horses, in an effort to find common solutions that improve the sector’s situation. A number of other aspects were also discussed, including improvement in breeding and studying the possibility of aid for the sector. The recently approved European animal husbandry legislation and aspects regarding equine identification were also covered. Juan Tirado, as both the president of the Federation and ANCCE, provided a detailed analysis of Federation activities over the past year. He reviewed the objectives achieved and the pathway followed to attain them, as well as those goals that have yet to be reached. In this regard, the FEACC governing body agreed to continue with the work carried out to date; it will also introduce new lines of action that will be specified within the upcoming months and that focus on the achievement of policies. In general, the 2017 General Assembly was a renewed exercise

in unification and work. Several associations make up the FEACC, including ANCCE (National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association), ANCADES (National Association of Spanish Sport Horse Breeders), ACPRM (Purebred Menorcan Horses Breeders’ Association), ASTROT (Trotting Horse Breeding Association), AECCAá (Spanish Association of Anglo-Arab Breeders), AECCA (Spanish Association of Arab Horse Breeders), Association of English

Thoroughbred Horse Breeders in Spain (ACPSIE) and UEGHá (Spanish Union of Purebred Hispano-Arab Breeders). Their common denominator is to protect, promote, defend and disseminate pure breeds and more specifically, those registered in the corresponding Stud Books. Furthermore, the Federation provides the sector with advice and channels specific proposals to establish agreements with other bodies, both public and private. ¡¡

On behalf of ANCCE and from here we would like to express our condolences to those families who have close ties with the equestrian world and who have lost a loved one recently. We wish them our sympathy, support and strength at this moment of hardship. Rest in peace: Eduardo Soto Osborne. Francisca Cerrato Balas. ¡¡

How did you get started in the world of Purebred Spanish Horses? I’ve loved horses from an early age, perhaps because we have always had quite a few. Over the years, as I was learning and getting to know more about these beautiful animals, I realized that the Purebred Spanish Horses were just what I was looking for. My long-time wish came true when my partner and I bought our first two PRE stallions, Zaguero II and Maestre IV, both from Yeguada Soto Gil. Two years later, we added two pregnant mares from this same breeder, and that is how our journey into the world of PRE horses began. How many PRE horses are there at your stud farm? Currently, we have nine Purebred Spanish Horses: two stallions, four mares and the rest are foals. Your best stallion/mare/foal is: Each and every horse has something unique and special. It is hard to name just one as the best. Among the stallions, Zaguero II Is really special; he has extraordinary movements and elegance. He is a hard and focused worker with an exceptional personality. Among his ancestors are horses that have written PRE history, including Deco, Levitón, Agente and Maluso. What are your priorities: sports, hacking, breeding, etc.? Our priorities cannot be defined

by a single orientation. Currently, we are focusing on breeding and increasing our herd. At the same time, we are working on recognition for these horses. Their good working character makes them very versatile. Later, we intend to present them at competitions. What does the future hold for PRE horses in your country? First of all, you need to consider that we are the only PRE stud farm registered here in Slovenia and the breed is not well known, but it is slowly gaining enthusiasts. Therefore, we are trying to contribute to the expansion and popularity of the breed by breeding horses with

the physique and personality that greatly characterizes PRE horses as a breed. What do you like most about Purebred Spanish Horses? There are no words to describe these horses. They are incredibly beautiful, very elegant, and full of willingness to work, with sweet personalities to become true friends for life. Each of them steals a piece of your heart and fills your soul. They are easy to work with, are fast learners and very intelligent. I think these horses have extraordinary charisma. Their appearance is breathtaking. Undoubtedly, they are one of a kind! ¡¡

In July, ANCCE received the sentence passed down by the High Court of Madrid that dismissed the Application for Judicial Review presented by the Unión de Criadores de Caballo Españoles (UCCE) against Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture decision refusing to grant this organization any official recognition to handle the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book. The High Court decision is not final, and an appeal may be presented. Without any doubt, this is good news for the Purebred Spanish Horse sector, and not because the Courts have backed the thesis defended by ANCCE, but rather, because the sector continues to be united at one. ¡¡

PUREbREd sPAnIsH HoRsEs, THE IMPoRTAncE oF A bRAnd nAME Purebred spanish Horses have always sparked interest, especially abroad. History, literature and a certain degree of romanticism have made the breed one of the most desired. In the last third of the 20th century, what for some was a matter of having such a horse due to a simple whim, then became a much more multi-purpose and sought after horse. TEXT: PEDRO mADERA

IN THE 1990s, THE POSSIBILITIES that a PRE would have be a member of the United States Dressage team was a milestone yet to be attained. Indirectly, it was a bit of publicity that earned world-wide recognition for the PRE. For many, a Purebred Spanish Horse is a hope with easy enhancement. Its presentation, character and willingness to work have made it both a multi-purpose and attractive product. Russia, Bahrein, Finland and South Africa are now onboard with more traditional markets such as Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala or Nicaragua. Found in 65 countries, the conquest of noble equestrian stud farms in Spain is a growing tendency. The proof lies in the statistics: in 2014, one in every four PRE horses was located outside of Spain. And the numbers are increasing, among other reasons, thanks to ever-growing appreciation for number of qualities: intelligence, nobility, fast learners, vehemence and functionality for Dressage, Spanish High School, Carriage Driving, parades and hippotherapy. These traits, together with their beauty, make purchasing a PRE horse a good investment. Every year, dozens of new breeders register with the PRE Stud Book. This organization issues all of the necessary documents for Purebred Spanish Horses to obtain their Equine ID throughout the world. Last year, there was a 12% increase in registrations over 2015, and of that number, 34% came from

outside Spain. Tradition plays an important role, and a high percentage correspond to the Mexican, Costa Rican, American, German and Italian markets, but there are also new destinations such as Poland, China, New Zealand and the Arab Emirates, to mention a few.

The first edition of the PRE Stud Book, published in 1913, mentions 163 stallion and 765 mares belonging to 44 registered stud farms. Today, things have changed greatly: there are 231,003 horses from 31,050 active stud farms, distributed all over the globe. That is why the PRE

Stud Book has become a reference for other equine breeds to follow. Sevilla is home to the PRE Stud Book, but there are international branch delegations in Europe, America and Oceania; thousands of visits are welcomed daily. The Stud Book office assumes extensive awareness work to disseminate information and knowledge about the breed. Breeders and owners in a number of countries such as the Czech Republic, Finland, the Philippines and Thailand meet and comply with the same rules and norms as Spanish breeders. It is an active way to have added value for our products and identifying traits. One must recognize that Purebred Spanish Horses have become an active part of the successful concept ‘Marca España’ (Spain as a brand name). Time is proving that olive oil, ham, real estate and technology are also compatible with the most emblematic animals of Spain’s agricultural production.

pre-purchase exams are a twofold exercise: first, a clinical analysis of the horse’s anatomy in search of bone deformities, swelling, or old injuries. This is followed by an x-ray to detect possible injuries or congenital malformations that could degenerate into problems at a later date, with the most frequent being osteochondrosis, navicular syndrome and arthrosis in the various joints”. Minimal demands are greater and greater. This has motivated breeders to undertake this analysis on their own accord. Thanks such efforts, they have better knowledge of their horses and the genetic evolution of their herds. PUREBRED SPANISH HORSES, THE KING OF INTERNET Over the past decade, Internet has greatly changed our lives. It is the greatest source of information available. Just type in what you are looking for and the search engine will provide documentation, news, information and an endless number of possibilities. It is the fastest means to communicate with others; undoubtedly, Internet has been the greatest help ever in the promotion, dissemination and awareness of Purebred Spanish Horses. Thanks to Internet, the PRE universe has reached every corner of the earth. One example is the growing awareness of SICAB (International PRE Trade Fair); this event has become the greatest and most important showcase for Purebred Spanish Horses. Annually, SICAB welcomes more than 300 journalists. National newspapers and SICAB’s own TV platform offer more than 80 hours of live broadcasts. In 2016, SICAB TV was visited by 389,292 people from 92 countries. Likewise, PRE enthusiasts and lovers could follow the latest events and results from the official app and social networks, consulted from 118 countries. In conclusion, Spain’s beloved breed has positioned itself not only in Spain but all over the world as a brand name. We must all feel proud of this global product. ¡¡

sIncE HoRsEs wERE f i r s t domesticated, geographically and chronologically in modern-day Ukraine between 6000-8000 years before Christ, a process began to modify, among other traits, the conformation and physiology of these animals; an endeavor attributable, to a great extent, to human intervention. These modifications, with their genetic makeup, derived from the need to have more productive horses, thus giving way to the creation of breeds. The definition and classification of these breeds is based on the ethnic coordinates by M. Baron: conformation, traits and aptitude. The morphologic assessment –of major importance for animal husbandry– falls within the scope of external conformation. This branch of veterinary science seeks to assess and identify animals or ethnic groups to describe them and predict their aptitudes. Likewise, external conformation is useful in equine breeding programs given the relationship between morphologic traits and productivity. Morphologic characteristics are determined genetically and are influenced by such factors a sex, age and the environment. In equines, gender differences are obvious in the animal’s conformation. Juveniles show greater height at the withers, increased longitudinal and cephalic

diameter in males, while in adulthood they show greater development of the thorax and forelimbs. Bone perimeter in stallions shows greater development than in their female counterparts that have a greater width of croup. Age not only implies substantial changes in the various body diameters and perimeters, but also the relationship between the main body regions. Once again, in equines, a proportionally larger head size and the convexity of the forehead are typical characteristics in young animals, the same as greater development of height with regards 42

to longitudinal diameters. When horses are about two years old, these measurements come together, with the lengthening of the face and the diameters for length and height being more similar, which are surpassed by the perimeter of the chest at about three years of age. By the age of five, the most noticeable changes are an increase in width diameters and the perimeter of the thorax, with the longitudinal diameter not undergoing substantial changes. Body conformation, defined in the dictionary as “the shape or structure of something, especially an animal,”

is of interest for animal husbandry as it is used as an important indicator of equine performance. However, it is considered subjective; zoometry allows us to quantify conformation, establish mean values and the variation range for specific breedrelated variations. Likewise, it allows us to differentiate individuals within an intra-specific population while at the same time, predicting the productive orientation of herds. Zoometrical information is extremely useful. It shows animals’ morphologic structure; it is applicable for breeding criteria, assesses whether

breeding program

or not these are appropriate over time and teaches us the suitability of the prototype for the reality of the breed. In April of this year, the Official State Gazette (BOE nº 98) published the Specific Rules for the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book and its Breeding Program. This legislation includes the update of the PRE Breed Type, where the breed’s general traits and its conformation (broken down by body region) are detailed. It also indicates visible characteristics, functional traits and aptitudes in addition to behavioral and personality traits, while at the same time mentioning penalizing defects and those that disqualify a horse as a PRE. The morphologic traits described in the PRE breed description are 44

expressed with regards to average zoometric values, and with the averages for the variables included in the Lineal Conformation Assessment (LCA) system. This article provides the average values for the zoometric variables as established for Purebred Spanish Horses when assessing their basic qualities as breeding stock and to register them in the Permanent Register of the PRE Stud Book. For this, the information and data from 7,764 stallions and 12,338 mares with an average age of five years, has been used. Height at the withers is an extremely relevant measurement because it is closely linked to body size and therefore, is the foundation for most body indexes. At the same

time, it is an important reference for inclusion or exclusion from the PRE Stud Book, while at the same time determining intra-racial differences. The average value of 159.42-161.98 cm identifies the PRE as a mediumsized breed; this value increase until adulthood with up to 160-165 cm being accepted as the ideal height for a riding horse. Upon relating these values with the height at the pelvis (158.61-160.82 cm) one of the basic principles of balance or harmony is met (both averages are similar), while body length (160.25-160.75 cm) is relatively low for a riding horse (which should be about 10 cm more). When the body index Is established, this point is verified, thus including PRE horses within the category of

being considered slightly shorter than they are wide, when compared to the average (< 85). The Metacarpal-Thorax Index (perimeter of the cannon bone/ perimeter of the thorax) shows that the herd population is lightweight, with long limbs and a relatively fine skeleton. The height of the back (151.44-154.10 cm) with regards to the highest point of the croup verifies that the dorsal-lumbar line is ascends slightly towards the high quarters; this allows the center of gravity to move forwards without overloading the shoulders. The head is of major ethnic importance. Well-proportioned in both sexes, it represents 38.5% of the height at the withers and is

mesocephalic (Cephalic Index = 0.37). On the other hand, the neck is somewhat shorter in both genders, with it representing 46.5% of the height at the withers. Equally important is the conformation of the thorax, both from the ethnic and functional point of view. When considering its length, depth and width, the structure is not elongated (depth/length = 68.5-69%. Its length is well under 45-50% of the full body length) with an elliptic or oval profile (width/depth = 57.1%). Likewise, these horses present an acceptable relative depth index (dorsal-sternal diameter/height at the withers) with values between 45.6 in stallions and 46.4 in mares (complying with another mandate

for balance) that widen towards the back (width of croup-barrel width = 10-11 cm). The back is relatively short (40.8% of the height at the withers) and slightly sloped (54-55º). The Transversal Ilium-Ischial (width of croup/height at the withers) and Longitudinal (length of croup/ height at the withers) Indexes are slightly greater in mares (33.4 vs. 32.5). Considering the actual size of the horse, this is a small croup, especially in terms of length (it does not surpass 33% of the body length), square (similar length and width) and with an acceptable inclination. Both the hip-stifle and ischium stifle distances prove that the femur is relatively slanted and slightly short, but with a rather long leg. ¡¡ 45

EXPREssiON iN THE PRE

How and When to introduce it Undoubtedly, expression is one of the most prominent attributes in Purebred Spanish Horses. Their conformation, the ease with which the shoulder moves forward –maintaining flexed knees and their capacity for elevation– make this virtue a notable trait in the PRE. This is what confers on them their famed expression. TEXT: JORGE CONDE PHOTOS: AZAHARA PÉREZ

s

so, Is IT ALwAYs good to promote expression? When should we start? If done too soon, are we sacrificing other, more substantial aspects? Years ago, in the conformation competition world of functionality, it became very fashionable to present horses in medium trot, really working their shoulders to make the horse shine. This, being very attractive, and therefore eye-catching, was rewarded excessively, thus becoming the desirable model. Horses learn how to free their shou lde r at t he sa me t i me as shortening their necks, squashing their withers and hollowing their backs to avoid engag i ng t hei r h i ndqua rters. Th is generates a negative tension and blocks their musculature, despite retaining, to a certain degree, a sufficient degree of excitement to show that poorly focused expression. Initially, one must remember that the physical development in PRE horses is later than in other breeds, and their strong point is not always thier main characteristic. Nevertheless, the breed has abundant attributes in their favor, wh ich we should take advantage of to successfully complete the process.

Horses must learn how to free their shoulders by means of a series of gymnastic exercises; this takes a time and is a process in itself. Training a horse must be viewed from a global perspective; the shoulders should be freed due to a lightening of the forehand. This happens when the horse, having completed the motor development phase (which is when the horse begins to understand its motor function and the appropriate

use of its hindquarters), enters the self-carriage phase. Engaged hindquarters, with the hind legs u nder its body mass, a better connection through the back and a stable contact slowly lead to the shoulder becoming freer and more elevated; this is something that should not happen in an isolated manner, but rather, there should be a sensation that the whole forehand rises, and this leads to the freedom of the shoulder. When this takes place in a true and natural manner, it is linked to other concepts such as the elevation of the withers, engagement of the hindquarters, having attained this without an excessive shortening of the neck, connection through the back and a positive tension understood as activity and impulsion. With this, the

muscles work in favor of locomotion without causing blockage. A c lea r i nd icat ion t h at t he shoulder is free is that there is a degree of parallelism between the projection of the fore and hind diagonal pairs at trot and between the hypothetical projection that the forefoot actually coincides with its previously projected hoof print. T he e xe r c i ses shou ld te nd towards introducing collection, but not maintaining it if the horse is not ready for this exercise. This refers solely to a few strides as weightbearing exercises based on the principle of holding and advancing.

Gymnastic exercises that shorten t he st r ides a nd ma i nta i n t he mobility of the hindquarters to then go forwards again with specific moments when the weight is on the hindquarters are beneficial. As the horse matures physically, its center of gravity will displace further backwards throughout the process and it is at this point that elevation is seen. It is therefore an attractive effect in every sense of the word; it is beneficial from the competitive point of view, but the foundation must be built correctly, following the principles of the Training Program. Once your horse has a well consolidated base, expression can then be introduced. To invert this process (first expression and later correction) often leads to failure to attain the main objective. Attention must be paid to the consequences of this on the horse’s health. ¡¡

PRE Horses Play an Excellent Role at Ermelo

UnTIL 2015, THE woRLd Breeding D r e s s a ge C h a m pion s h i ps for Young Dressage Horses has been held uninterruptedly since 1997 in the Germany city of Verden. L a st ye a r, a n a g r e e me nt w a s reached between the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and ot he r bod ies i nvolved i n t h i s i mporta nt event, to move it to E r melo at t he faci l it ies of t he National Center belonging to the Dutch Federat ion. At prev ious ed it ions, P u rebred Spa n ish Horses participated thanks to the performance of sire stallions such as Cazurro II (2009), Manchego ARB (2011), Genciano Bcn (2014), Jamaicano de Ymas III (2014) and Duncan IV (2016), to mention a few. E rmelo is a horse breeder’s Olympus. Breeders dream of an oppor t u n it y to compete w it h their horses at the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Dressage Horses. This year, three PR E horses performed in these renown arenas: Poeta de Susaeta, from Yeguada Susaeta and ridden by Guillermo García; Joyero VG, owned by Barcelona Horses, bred by Yeguada Velasco-González and ridden by Annabelle Collins; and Vetusto JV I, owned by Caballería

52

Esteve-Agrapur, bred by Yeguada Juan Vázquez and ridden by Juan Lecina. The first contestant was Poeta de Susaeta in the class for 5-year-olds. He is Yeguada Susaeta’s black pearl that has shattered all competition patterns. At SICAB 2016, he was proclaimed ANCCE Cup Champion a n d br oke a l l r e c or d s i n t he preliminary test with an impressive 83.800%. From then on, he has harvested one success after another. On the fi rst day of the compet it ion (Aug u st 3 r d ), t h i s black descendent of Albero II was granted a score of 74.400%. About 11:15 i n the morn i ng a nd w ith relentless rain, Guillermo began the test. Stride by stride, Guillermo Ayala and Poeta de Susaeta moved along as a single body with a very rhythmic trot, showing regularity, elasticity with good suspension and engagement. The judges rewarded them with an 8.0. When it came to ca nter, the r ider was rather conservative and the transition from collected to extended gallop was not very evident. One of this horse’s strong points has always been his walk, but due to the rain, he proved to be rather tense, which translated into a score of 7.0.

Guillermo Ayala and Poeta de Susaeta, owned by Yeguada Susaeta, represented Spain in the class for 5-year-olds.

Of the 39 participants in the prel i m i na r y rou nd, the top 12 classified for the Gran Final on Sunday. On Sat urday, the 5t h of Aug ust, a l l ot he r pa r t ic ipa nts competed in the Consolation Final; in this case, the top three classified for the Gra nd Fi na l. Gu i l lermo García with Poeta placed thirtieth on the first day of competition. The second and final competition for this pair was Saturday, the 5th, where they once again performed

a preliminary test for 5-year-olds. Having finalized, Eddy de Wolf Van Westerrode from Holland provided the com ments on behalf of the judges; he pointed out parts of the trot and defined it as the horse’s best highlight. The judges granted a score of 8.0. In terms of walk, the judges were concerned about the slight irregularity and missed rhythm, in which case the score was 6.3. His canter was very springy, but certain strides were short; the final

score was 7.0. Lastly, the pair scored 7.5 in submission and 7.3 for future perspectives. In the end, their final score was 72.200%. Guillermo García was happy with his participation in a major, worldclass event. His performances have been clean and harmonic; his strong point was the trot, which earned 8.0 on two occasions. The Madrid-based rider stated: “I’m very happy. Poeta has given it all, and I am happy to be riding this horse. He’ll surely 53

bring a great deal of joy to Spain.” García is proud to represent Spain on a PRE. “I’m delighted to have taken a Spanish Horse to a world event of this nature and help promote our native breed. We will continue to work in the right direction; our horses can also be competitive at major events,” he specified. Likew ise, both Mª José Ruiz, ow ner of Poeta, a nd Gu i l lermo expressed their appreciation for t he s uppor t g ive n by A NCC E . Specifically, they were thankful for 54

the welcome received from ANCCE representatives in Ermelo: Ignacio Candau, member of the Executive Committee, and Manuel González, the Executive Secretary. sMALL ToUR- sIRE sTALLIons This year, a new, innovative class has been introduced at the World Breeding Dressage Championships: Approved Sire Stallions (CDI1*). In this particular test, each country presents its representative. In the case of Spain, it was Juan Lecina

riding Vetusto JV I –2016 Champion of Spa i n i n the class for 8 a nd 9-year-olds. Well beyond national borders, a second PRE competed in this same class; representing the Bermuda Islands was Joyero VG, owned by Barcelona Horses, bred by Yeguada Velasco-González and ridden by Bermuda-based lady rider Annabelle Collins. On the first day of the Prix St. Georges competition, Juan Lecina presented a test in keeping with a PRE. His trot was very harmonious,

with his two-track work being most outstanding. At canter, their balance was slightly off during the second half pirouette. The final score was 68.596%, thus placing them seventh. Lecina pointed out: “I am thrilled; the horse is attentive, strong, happy and very expressive. He was really l i ked. It has been a wonderfu l experience to participate with a PRE in such an important competition.” On the other hand, Joyero VG took seventh place on the roster w it h a 69. 211% , a s A n n a be l le

Collins presented a flawless and f low i n g test. “I’m h appy w it h Joyero’s performance; he is a very good horse,” confirmed Annabelle. She continued by commenting: “I love Purebred Spanish Horses; they have huge hearts and are always willing to work and improve. He is unique for Dressage.” It is said that Dressage is to horses as ballet is to humans. Each stride is a m i xt u re of passion, dedication and the expertise of the ride in conjunction with the

willingness of the horse to thus create the gracefulness of dancing in the arena. Proof of this was seen on Sunday, the 6th when Juan Lecina and Annabelle Collins, together with their mounts, performed the last waltz to bid Ermelo farewell. Juan Lecina was the first to enter the arena. To the electronic music of Faded by Alan Walker, he performed the first part of the test at trot, with which the horse was brilliant. His two-track and lateral exercises were well executed, but at certain points, the contact was not 100% stable. This horse’s special ability for collection was evident. On both diagonals for the flying changes, the horses showed a bit of tension, wh ich led to severa l m ista kes. While performing canter pirouettes, Vetusto JV I was slightly off due to a lack of activity in the hind legs. Despite these minor errors, the pair performed a very pleasant test, to earn a final score of 67.250%. Annabelle Collins and Joyero VG were wonderful dance partners in the main arena at Ermelo. They performed an extremely difficult exercise w ith outsta nd i ng leftright, right-left changes in halfpass at trot. Annabelle presented very springy flying changes going forward with an uphill tendency. Joyero VG, his duet, was exuberant throughout the trot. Undoubtedly, the moment of truth was the canter pirouettes, as the horse showed good col lect ion rest i ng on t he hindquarters together with good f lex ion of h is joi nts. H is fi na l score was 69.250%; this placed him fourth, and two places further up on the classification roster with regards to the previous day. The c u rta i n fel l on a nother e x t re me ly successf u l eve nt i n Ermelo. It is the second consecutive yea r t h at PR E Horses h ave participated at one of the most important events of the year. Poeta de Susaeta, Joyero VG and Vetusto JV I have been chosen to represent a unique breed, native to Spain, and one that gains strength, renown and relevance at international arenas. ¡¡ 55

How to Present Horses in Movement at conformationFunctional competitions An official conformation competition for Purebred spanish Horses is defined as an event where horses, both stallions and mares, compete against each other based on the breed type as defined by the current prototype. Every participating horse must be registered in the PRE stud book, and comply with all conditions established in the current Rules and Regulations. This discipline assesses the beauty of the horse in keeping with the current breed characteristics and its physical aptitudes for movements (walk, trot and canter).

wHEn attending a conformationfunctional competition, several phases are involved: It all begins with the initial or preparation phase, which takes place at the facilities where the horse is stabled; this includes preparing the horse for the event and its training to improve the paces, as well as its physical condition and stance when immobile. Phase two of this process is to transport the horse to the venue and house it on the grounds. Special care must be taken at this point to guarantee that the horse enjoys the best possible conditions to avoid either any loss of physical conditions attained during training or any other injury that might hinder the quality of the presentation. Therefore, horses must have adequate means of transportation and all of the necessary protection to avoid injuries and impacts, while at the same time as many stops as may be necessary must be included, especially when planning a long-distance trip. When travelling, horses need comfortable

transportation, as they must compete a few days after arrival, and without having been able to rest. During this phase, all health and animal welfare mandates established by the competition must be met; horses must have all vaccines, be wormed and in optimal health, with the corresponding passport and transportation papers, should these latter be necessary. The third phase is the actual competition. This phase is not limited to entering the arena to perform a test, but rather, adapting your horse once it is on the grounds where it will be housed temporarily. While on the grounds, your horse needs to be cared for as best as possible; remember that your horse is in a new stable, with circumstances different to those to which it is accustomed. Your horse may lack the comfort and space of its own stable, automatic waterer, etc. All of these factors play a role in the physical condition of your hose and could alter its presentation. Phase four is the presentation and the main subject of this

article. A horse must be presented in optimal conditions: clean, with the equipment as indicated in the Rules, but without additional elements that could camouflage defects. Such items include bandages, hair dye, paint on the hooves or any other elements listed as prohibited in the current Rules & Regulations. When it comes to the handler, he or she must be dressed in the corresponding traditional attire or comply with the dress code as established by the competition. The presentation phase begins when the horse enters the arena. A competing horse goes around the arena one or several times, at walk so that the judge or judges is able to attain a first impression. It is important to remember that these initial laps are not to judge the horse, but rather, for the sake of general observation. Consequently, it is extremely important that the horse enters without tension and without being forced any more than strictly necessary, as it is at this point when the various body regions are observed in movement, especially the mechanics at walk. Remember that a walk with good, clearly denoted and frank mechanics will score higher than one that shows overstep and whose rhythm is not clearly 4-time, or that is compromised by moving towards a lateral gait, and in a worst case scenario, ambling. Once the contact phase concludes, the competition phase begins. Horses enter the arena one by one to be scored. This is when maximum interest and efforts must be invested in making the most of your horse. Here is where I would like to emphasize the work of the handler’s assistants. In most cases, this help alters the horse’s state of mind; they greatly over-excite and stress the horse, when the true

Favorita CII, owned by Yeguada La Troyeta.

function of the handler’s assistant is to intervene solely in the case of need or danger. Continuing with the presentation in the arena, the horse begins by walking the length of the arena. I insist that the horse needs to be led without any tension, with a forwardgoing attitude, while maintaining the walk sequence without breaking the pace. We must not make mistakes that could lead to a quality walk earning a poor score. We must not allow an overloading of the shoulders with an excessively low head, or even being behind the vertical. Tension must be avoided, because it only achieves an anti-natural position, taking a lot of weight off the hind quarters and hindering contact, which in turn, leads to worse control of the horse, and by defect, a lack of straightness. In such cases, the steps are not symmetric and the gait earns a lower score. Also, it must be stated that, on occasion, we see horses that are presented with no straightness, to hide slight deviations of their limbs, especially the forelimbs, at 59

60

walk. It is important to remember that straightness influences the mechanics. According to the Judging Manual, a distorted walk affects the body and movement and is seen as a slight defect; it will be scored around 4 or 5. On the other hand, a slight deviation of the limbs that does not affect balance will be scored as 7. In the case of a walk that is very straight, the score could reach up to 8, 9 or 10 points. In summary, we must seek a regular, mechanic walk that defines the rhythm, with straight, ample and fluid movements to correctly use the upper line. After the walk, it is time for some rounds at canter –at least four– that are regular, quality and without breaking the pace. To achieve this, the horse needs to show its attitude for balance with an up-hill tendency. Ideally, the round should begin at walk, to then transition into trot and to then canter, especially with young horses with less training and balance on the circles. The handler must try and avoid making the horse run, as this leads to a loss of balance, regularity and the up-hill tendency. In this regard, the judges do not score such actions highly. At canter, the rhythm must be clear –steer away from a disunited, or a 4-time canter or cantering on the wrong lead– regularity, fluency, elasticity, impulsion, an uphill tendency and

straightness are the buzz words! In conclusion, we must show the quality of the pace rather than its speed; when running, rhythm is lost. This could compromise the timing, and above all, alter the weight on the shoulders and the laterals. Such defects are the extremely serious and the most difficult to correct. When it comes to trot, we proceed to perform along the full length of the arena and then halfway back. Remember that in Purebred Spanish Horses, trotting (elevation of the knees and activity of the hocks) is a breed quality. We seek regular paces, with a good length of stride and suspension, impulsion and cadence. To obtain good results, we must once again avoid running, as this leads to a loss of regularity and a tendency towards breaking the pace. Balance must be sought so that the horse –with regularity and ease– maintains a given rhythm, without forcing the horse; this would interrupt the mechanics and the pace, thus leading to a lower score. A fluid presentation with regular strides will always earn a better score than a presentation with isolated strides or one with little continuity, even when these seem to show better quality. A good trot lies in the mechanics, regularity, rhythm and balance. To obtain a score that is acceptable or higher, the priority lies in amplitude, impulsion, straightness and elevation as breed qualities, while at the same time the limbs showing a lack of deviation from the path. To get the very best from your horse, its presentation in the arena must transmit all of the above. Additionally, we must guarantee that our horse is physically in shape thanks to correct training, without any injuries or tensions. The next chapter will cover how to perform a correct presentation at halt. ¡¡

Satisfaction Runs High among USPRE Seasonal Sports Plan Participant at their First Encounter

T

he recently created USPRE Seasonal Sports Plan is up and running thanks to the first clinic held on the 7 th and 8 th of July in central California, at the Mountain View Sports Horses facilities. Under the leadership of US Olympian Rider, member of the USEF and 4* International Judge, Charlotte Bredahl, this new program seeks to contribute to the development of riders with Purebred Spanish Horses and reinforce PRE participation in national teams in the US. The event brought together five horses and rides, all with varying

62

levels of experience. Catherine Rose came with Receloso XXXV, owned by Liberty Andalusians and bred by Yeguada Romero Benítez, together with Cindy Ramírez riding Decoroso HGF owned by Hampton Green Farm, Ariene Rezvani with Bandalor MQ from Caballo Road Farm and bred by Yeguada Marquesa, Stacey Wakaki on Calypso KR, owned by Audrey Autwell and bred by Ketcham Ranch and last, but not least, Tori Gable riding Fierro ARM, from Gable Equestrian and bred by Yeguada Armendáriz. During the initial, warm-up phase, participants focused on having a rhythmic horse, with good contact and moving forward. From there, Charlotte Bredahl began working individually with each pair, to focus on the needs of each horse and rider. She answered any question that arose and provided clear and understandable explanations about the purpose and objective of each exercise to provide positive words and very constructive tasks. Right from the beginning, until the conclusion of the clinic, it was obvious that each pair improved greatly. Survey results showed that 100% of the participants were very highly satisfied with the clinic. This translates into a major success for the Sports Plan, as it is an opportunity for breeders and riders to put their sites on competitions. Such courses facilitate tools for their professional orientation, which, in many cases, has not been accessible to individual breeders. This program will materialize in the results earned by PRE Horses at elite competitions and their positioning of the breed in sports. A second clinic will be held in fall, in Wellington, Florida. Once USPRE has selected the next generation of athletes, it will proceed to keep a close eye on the results, developments and competitions of each pair; then. From there, the selected pairs will be involved in the planning of future objectives. ¡¡
