President of ANCCE

Objective: Reinforce the PRE AS THE PRESIDENT OF the National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association and with a new edition of the International Purebred Spanish Horse Trade Fair (SICAB) looming ahead, the globalization spirit of our breed became a World Championship three year ago. I would like to contemplate a few aspects that could perhaps, bother some, but it is something I must do, given my current responsibility. ANCCE DEFENDS our native breed and banished the classic identification as Andalusian Horse forever, to disclose the genetic wealth of Spain’s very best horse. In today’s world, such determination would be impossible, because there are people who are more concerned about their own personal interests than collective benefits. YEARS AGO, ANDALUSIA showed the world an example of generosity, and I know first-hand as I am from Extremadura. Andalusia renounced a century-old inheritance to benefit an entire nation; this is something that needs to be justly appreciated. I am stating this at a time of unrest, where Spain is struggling with an endless number of regional and political follies. The more we advance in the globalization of our breed, the less I understand the efforts of some to have such provincial sights. In a world that eliminates boundaries day after day, I don’t understand those who are determined to build artificially and inexplicably walls to separate us. TODAY, AS THE PRESIDENT OF A PLURAL ASSOCIATION, and without forsaking our title as a National Association, I would like to share my commitment with the law, the constitution, with the Monarchy, with the nation from which our breed owes its name, and of course, with the Purebred Spanish Horse. WITH THIS PREAMBLE, I would like to encourage you to actively and decisively participate in SICAB 2017. We must always remember that this event is a showcase, not of individual people, but rather, our beloved PRE Horse. SICAB is a window open to the world; it is an event that we must care for, pamper and protect, because marketing is what each of us does day after day. Of course I accept reasoned complaints and dissent with the way I do things, but I beg you to express your differing ideas using the established channels. In many cases, we fail to realize the damage we do to our brand –the PRE– with issues that lead only to the deterioration of our global image. THE PUREBRED SPANISH HORSE deserved that extra effort, and for a number of reasons, but mainly because the PRE can’t do it alone. Let’s make SICAB 2017 a festive event; we must understand that at a competition subjectivity is always there, with more losers than winners. Let us accept a reality that involves us all: may the Purebred Spanish Horse become the true winner and emerge strengthened.

PRE Horses are a Guarantee for Juniors

t

TEXT: Lily Forado PHOTo: AZAHARA PÉREZ

THE PUREBRED SPANISH HORSE is an extremely versatile mount. Its noble personality and big heart are traits that make the PRE ideal for juniors in the world of Dressage. There are evermore juniors in the arena on the backs of powerful PRE horses with impressive movements. Many riders continue to prefer Spain’s native breed: the Purebred Spanish Horse Internationally, the presence of PRE horses in junior categories has grown exponentially and to such a degree that a PRE has represented Spain at the European Championships. Ainhoa Prada riding Mosquetero VII--owned by Yeguada San Antonio and bred by Yeguada Lovera--is a noteworthy pair. As this season progressed, they too improved. Their pathway towards a gold medal was truly exciting. As the latest ANCCE Cup for Dressage Champion in the U14 category, Ainhoa earned an endless number of awards. An important milestone in here sports career was the bronze medal earned at the 2016 European Championship, together with her teammates, in addition to fourth place in individuals. BY THE SAME TOKEN, Araceli Pons is another up and coming rider. This young lady from the Balearic Islands follows in the footsteps of Ainhoa. Progressively, this Carlos Torrell pupil improved with each and every entrance into national and international arenas. Once she made her debut in February of this year, Araceli took a giant step forward, and just a month later, together with her beloved Mejorano V--owned by José Manuel Pons Sintes and bred by Yeguada Bauza--the competed

at international events. Their main goal was to become a member of Spain’s National Team at the European Junior Championships. And that is exactly what they did: four months later, Araceli left for Roosendaal (Holland), where she was the best Spaniard on the roster. She placed thirteenth. Teammate Jessica Castro also competed with a PRE named Indiferent from the stud farm Eugassada Germans Ribera. The finishing touch for a superb season was last September, when Araceli was proclaimed Spanish National Champion, in the U14 category. THIS DOUBLE SUCCESS by Araceli Pons and Marina Herrero is a true highlight in PRE Dressage history. The fact that they placed well above central-European breeds clearly states that the PRE is a very competitive horse for junior categories, and a sure guarantee for the future. Juveniles 0* (U18) is a much more challenging category, especially in terms of canter exercises. At the Junior Championship, Marta Gómez Acebo, riding Altanero ER from the stud farm El Reguero y Chaparral, was just a step away from securing a place on the podium. Nevertheless, she earned a praiseworthy fourth place. When it comes to the test for Juveniles (U18), it includes lateral work, flying changes. Marta Bada González riding Zanón--owned by Antonio Melia and bred by Pedro Marqués Taltavull--was the best classified rider with a PRE. Of the 52 participants, Marta placed twentysixth. Lastly, in the test for Young Riders--similar to Prix St. Georges,

cartas but reserved for young riders-the latest 2016 SICAB Champion was Jesús Esteban Cornejo, riding Mío II, owned by Real Maestranza Caballería de Ronda; they placed eighth with a total accumulated score of 199.389. Throughout the three-day competition, their averages were always above 66%. ONCE THE SPANISH NATIONAL Championship concluded--Adults (June 2017), Juniors (September 2017) and Young Horses (September 2017)--it was time for the Regional Federation Championships. Among these were the Andalusian Dressage Championship and Adapted Dressage, held the weekend

of October 19th near the Chapin Riding School in Jerez. This championship saw a high number of PRE Horses in the various Junior levels. In Alevines (U12), José Luis Rodríguez with a PRE named OH Figura, from Ignacio Bravo Martínez, placed first on the podium, followed by Carmen Mena Bernal with Aduanero VI, bred by Yeguada la Huerta and owned by Yeguada Mariano Pérez Pérez, who took home the bronze medal. In the U14 category (Infantiles), Cristina Morales rode Carabobeño Ancla, owned by Antonio Cid Rodríguez and bred by Agropecuaria El Ancla. In U18 (Juveniles 0*), Clara Muñoz rode Capricho LIII (a member of Spain’s 2016 European Championship team), bred by Joaquín Mora Garzón and owned by Clara MR, stood on the winners’ podium in their respective levels. María del Mar Hernández with Rosmarinus--owned by Yeguada Joivemar and bred by Hermanos Camacho Benítez--battled hard to achieve the bronze medal in the category for Juveniles. IN SUMMARY, this year, Purebred Spanish Horses have played an excellent role in the various competition arenas. The results speak for themselves: two gold medals at the Spanish National Championship and several medals at the Andalusian Championships. The beauty, versatility and noble spirit of the PRE makes the breed unique and desired by all Purebred Spanish Horses have something that everyone loves; there is something that complements its noble personality to make it easy to enjoy. PRE Horses have shined in their own light in both national and international arenas with very well prepared juniors holding the reigns and with a hopeful future awaiting them. ¡¡

THE LEGACY OF PUREBRED SPANISH HORSES II

Their influence in America TEXT: Azahara Pérez PHOTOS: rafael lemos

report

m

MANY OF THE MOST eccentric breeds, at least in terms of coat color, are rooted in Spanish Horses. PRE breed quality standards accept only certain basic colors (grey, bay, black and more recently chestnut). Today, even the most conservative breeders such as the Military Stud Farm or Yeguada de la Cartuja, see the birth of buckskins with unique spots or blue eyes; such horses are automatically discarded from breeding or are auctioned off. However, in the old days when the best horses were for royalty, horses failing to meet the required norm were destined to the armed forces. When pioneering Spaniards landed in Panama, Brazil or Argentina, they introduced a large number of Spanish horses. Eventually, herds were established in those countries to then give way to some of the more popular Latin American breeds, including the Criollo, Paso Fino, the Peruvian Paso--very popular in both Peru and Florida (USA)--with this latter being the first important Spanish enclave in North American in the 14th Century. MUSTANG Also known as a Spanish Mustang, its Spanish heritage is undisputed; this breed is a direct descendent of horses landing with Spanish settlers in the New World. Many of these horses from Spain reproduced massively and in an uncontrolled manner on the new continent. Many others were abandoned or simply escaped from the ranch. This gave way to the first feral horses living in the wild. In turn, these horses became known as Mustangs (meaning having no owner) and were popular among American-Indian tribes. In 1492, Christopher Columbus set foot on the New World bringing 24 Spanish stallions and 10 Spanish mares with him and settled in The Antilles. Hernan Cortes, in 1519, brought the first

14

16 horses to mainland when he arrived in Mexico. However, it wasn’t until 1598, during the Juan de Oñate expedition that horse breeding actually began. This first group of Purebred Spanish Horses was made up of 25 Purebred stallions and 55 mares. Although the first Spanish horses were taken from Mexico to Texas in 1542, herd size was small until 1686 when the Alonso de Leon expedition arrived with more than 700 horses. Over the years, many of these horses were released and reproduced to form wild herds. These extended from New Mexico and Texas to Mississippi. By 1787, horses had multiplied to such a point that at a rodeo, more than 8,000 horses were collected. It has been stated that the largest herd of wild horses of all America was found between the Rio Grande and the Palo Duro cannon, in centralwestern Texas. Mustangs, known in Spanish as “mesteños”, were hardy and very resistant horses. They were ideal when covering long distances and extremely useful when working with cattle, which is why the breed became so popular not only among native tribes, but for everyone else. Thus, mustangers (or mesteñeros, if you prefer) appeared. They rounded up and hunted entire herds to break them and cover the demand for horses, to create a clear image of what the Wild West was all about. Time was brutal towards these horses, as they were soon considered a pest. Entire herds were annihilated to the point of extinction. Bob Brislawn, who became aware of the breed’s situation, struggled to save them from extermination. In 1957, he founded the Spanish Mustang Registry to preserve and recuperate the breed. In 1971, the US government passed the Wild Free Roaming and Burros Act that prohibited the hunting of Mustangs. Today, the herds have grown greatly, and continue under

report vigorous and active horses that continue to show their Iberian characteristics. By spending more than 300 years in the wild, and through natural selection, they developed resilience on the vast lands and local weather conditions. In more modern times, the breed was re-introduced to farm work at the hand of peasants and gauchos, who captured and trained these horses. The breed was on the brink of extinction due to commerce and crossbreeding with other breeds, with the original Criollo being almost inexistent. The Sociedad Rural Argentina (Society) was founded in 1866; it was their task to find the few horses still roaming in the wild and preserve the breed’s original traits. It was not until 1923 when the Breeders’ Association –known as Asociación de Criadores de Caballos Criollos– was founded. A group of forty breeders worked to preserve, breed, select and disseminate the goodness of these horses. Today, the breed is extremely popular and one that is preferred by Gauchos in Argentina.

the protection and administration of the US government. CRIOLLO Criollo horses are native to Argentina, with their history being very similar to that of the Mustang. As descendants of Spanish horses that travelled to America with the Conquistadors, they escaped from the ranches and missions or were stolen by native Indians. Roaming freely, the formed herds, and once exposed to the wild environment, natural selection and endogamy fixed the breed’s genetic traits. With a medium height of 1.50 meters, they vary in coat colors and spots. They are very resistant, 16

APPALOOSA The Appaloosa is one of the most famous riding breeds in the United States. Its popularity is due to the extensive variety of spotted coat colors that range from leopard and semi-leopard, to snowflake or marble among others. There is such a wide range of colors and spots that it is practically impossible to find two horses with the same makings. Although seemly strange, these same coat colors are found in cave paintings that are more than 18,000 years old! In the 16th century, with the landing of Spanish conquistadores in America, they were accompanied by their horses, and where there were already a small number of spotted steeds. The Nez Perce Indians, also known as “redskins” took charge of the horses that

17

report were wild or abandoned by the settlers; they broke them and bred with them in search of a specific standard. With the passing of time, the breed became extremely popular among the various tribes. The breed was found throughout almost all of the United States thanks to its fame as one of the best riding horses in the world. Years later, Indian mares were covered by Russian stallions, with a selective breeding program being created from both bloodlines: Spanish and Russian. In 1858, the US Cavalry, under the leadership of Colonel George Wright, exercised his power over the natives and ordered the sacrifice of all Palouse horses before the Nez Perce Indians living along the Spokane River. More than 800 horses were killed, but many managed to escape to the mountains and breed to create a unique horse. This event appears in the history books as the Horse Slaughter Camp. Today, the remains of those horses continue to be buried along the Spokane River where a stone monument stands to honor them. AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE The American Quarter Horse is a crossbreed of Spanish horses brought by colonizers, together with Arab, Barb and Turkish with Saxon influence. It is one of North America’s oldest horses as its origin dates back to 1611 in Jamestown, the first British colony in Virginia. Being race enthusiasts, the early settlers began breeding race horses by introducing native breeds that had descended from Spanish Horses as well as English Thoroughbreds. This created robust, strong, compact and resistant horses that were extremely agile and fast thanks to their English blood. Used to work with cattle, they gained fame and success in quarter mile races, from which they earned their name. Today, they are in demand for field work as well as for their achievements in Western 18

AMERICAN PAINT HORSE The origins of this horse go hand in hand with the American Quarter Horse, given that the main difference between these breeds is their coat color. These horses descended from Spanish horses brought to the New World by Hernan Cortes and were mixed with Arab blood. Many of these horses were stolen by the Sioux Indians, who bred them with their own native pones with preference being on the piebald coats that characterize the breed. The evolution of this breed moved forward when in the 17th century British horses were imported with the resulting horses being used for quarter of a mile races. When the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) was founded in 1940, it only accepted horses with a uniform coat color; thus, piebald coats were left out of the register. This forced the creation of the American Paint Horse Association (APHA) in 1965 to preserve and maintain the breed uniqueness with piebald coats. Today, it is recognized as an independent breed. MISSOURI FOX TROTTER When Spanish pioneers sailed up the Mississippi River to settle in the Ozark Mountains, they took their very best horses with them. They needed a hardy horse that was comfortable for lengthy travel, for which the crossed their beloved PREs with Morgans (originally from Canada) and Arab horses. Later, they discovered that the resulting horses performed an ambling or diagonal gait that became known as the fox trot; the front hoof of the diagonal pair lands before the hind, thus eliminating the moment of suspension while increasing a smooth ride. These horses are more useful and comfortable when riding over stony grounds, so they

were selected and bred specifically with this unique characteristic. As people moved west from the hills and plantations in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, they brought their dearest positions, including their best horses. This favored the expansion of the breed, reinforced its qualities and was used to work with cattle. Today, this breed is ideal for riding thanks to its smooth ride and good personality. PASO FINO AND PERUVIAN PASO Both of these breeds are very similar and share the same origin, as they descent from the first Spanish horses brought to America 20

by Christopher Columbus to Añasco Bay in 1492. Later, in 1511, when Juan Ponce de Leon governed Puerto Rico, more Spanish horses were re-introduced thanks to a number of horses brought from Sevilla and from the Island of La Española (today, the Dominican Republic and Haiti) to being strict selection and breeding. By 1515, Puerto Rico was breeding and exporting horses all over the New World. Fernando Pizarro travelled to the island to purchase 20 colts for his brother Francisco Pizarro, for his personal use and that of his men when conquering Peru. These same horses were the foundation for the Peruvian Paso. In 1519, Hernan Cortes, who already had Spanish horses in Toa Baja and Dorado, had horses shipped to Mexico for the conquest there. Of the horses born in America, some developed unique and smooth ambling. A virtuous, four-beat gait that is extremely rhythmic and cadenced that fascinated South American breeders who selected these horse as the initial precursors of the Paso Fino. With the passing of time, strict selection separated the Peruvian Paso from the Paso Fino, with both breeds being similar but with differentiated conformation. The Peruvian Paso is more rustic, slightly more Baroque than the Paso Fino, which has more defined and refined lines, despite the fact that both breeds still show signs of the PRE inheritance. There are many breeds currently found on the American continent, each with its own traits and unique characteristics. Spanish horses were the first to crisscross America, thanks to which, they wrote the first lines of equine history. All of the American breeds have, to a greater or lesser degree, Spanish blood. The Purebred Spanish Horse, is, par excellence, the ancestor of American horses. ¡¡

Medical-Surgical Treatment of Wounds, the Main Topic at the 28th International Equine Medicine and Surgery Convention Veterinarians, specialized in equines, entrepreneurs and related groups have an important date on their November calendar: the only scientific meeting that has been held consecutively for the past 18 years in Spain. This convention has become a medical and scientific point of reference within the equine world. On the 17th and 18th of November, coinciding with SICAB (in Sevilla, Spain) the 28th International Equine Medicine and Surgery Convention will begin. Every year, the Official Andalusian Veterinarian Association and the Sevilla Veterinarian Association organize an event to standardize scientific criteria among the most important professionals and veterinarians in the sector. One of the main objectives of this convention is to improve animal health and well-being. With that in mind, the scientific committee has drafted a program in which the main topic is the medical and surgical treatment of wounds in horses. Speakers are international and prestigious experts in the field, including Dr. Jacintha Wilmink, certified RNVA, and certified members of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons Dr. Francisco Javier López-San Román and Dr. Juan Alberto Muñoz Morán. ¡¡

9th Foro de Opinión El Caballo Español Award for the Real Maestranza de Caballería of Ronda This past 17th of October, Ernesto Vazquez Lopez, the president of the Foro de Opinión El Caballo Español (PRE Opinion Forum) granted the organization’s award to the Marquess of Salvatierra, Rafael Atienza Medina.

24

The Award Ceremony was held during a luncheon offered at the Círculo de Labradores Club in Sevilla, to celebrate the 9th edition of this honor. As is customary and before Forum members, a memorable presentation was enjoyed and witnessed by some fifty guests representing the various institutions dedicated to Purebred Spanish Horses and friends of the organization. During the event, the educational efforts carried out by the Royal Order of Chivalry in Ronda (Malaga) were underlined. This fact is backed by the many awards granted to the Order’s training program in classic equitation for Spanish High School and Dressage competitions. One example of their endeavors is the Olympic diploma earned by rider Severo Jurado at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. ¡¡

On behalf of ANCCE, and from here, we would like to express our condolences to those families who have close ties with the equestrian world, and who have recently lost a loved one. Our sympathy, support and prayers go to you all at this difficult moment. Rest in peace: Edelmira Almendral. Juan Antonio Reyes Reyes. ¡¡

‘El Traje Corto’ by Antolín Díaz Salazar

Jerez Honors the Royal Escort Squadron with the 2017 Golden Horse

rafael lemos

At the age of 84, Master Tailor Antonio Díaz Salazar, recognized at the King of Andalusia’s typical country attire, has presented his book El Traje Corto, where he shares 65 years of professional experiences. Although he retired just two years ago, throughout his career, he dressed the best bull-fighters--both mounted and on foot--and riders in the world. This has earned him the title as one of the most renowned master tailors, specialized in all aspects involved in the handcrafted production of typical Andalusian country clothing: suits for country work, matadors and mounted bull-fighters, side-saddle riders, carriage drivers, etc. With a prologue by Álvaro Domecq and collaborations by Juan Llamas and Luis Mahillo, the book reviews his extensive professional career with an endless number of photographs, sketches and designs for short jackets, guayabera shirts, vests, country trousers, among many other garments. Antolín Díaz Salazar seeks to share his knowledge for future generations in an effort to preserve this wealth for all those who love the world of horses and bulls. ¡¡

The mayor of Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), Mamen Sánchez, presided over the jury meeting that annually grants the Golden Horse Award. It was therein that jury members unanimously granted the award--which is also celebrating its golden jubilee --to the Royal Escort Squadron. As the City Hall indicated in its press release, this distinction seeks to recognize the Squadron as one of the “leading examples of the Purebred Spanish Horse” as most of the horses ridden by Cuirassiers, Lancers, Scouts, the Bugle & Cornet Band, and the Brigade are all bred at the Military Stud Farm, located in Jerez, “with the corresponding repercussions that this has, both for the breed and for the city.” The Royal Escort Squadron is Spain’s Royal Cavalry Unit, made up of Army staff from the Calvary. This specific unit originated in the Royal Escort created on April 19, 1875, under the rule of King Alfonso XII of Spain. ¡¡

Sorry, our mistake! ANCCE Reports: On page 97 of issue 237, the September-October issue, we mistakenly published that the horse Quincallo de Indalo from Yeguada Indalo was bronze at the ANCCE Cup for Dressage, in the category for 5-year-olds (SICAB 2016), when in fact, the horse won the silver, thus placing second in his category.

How did you get started in the world of Purebred Spanish Horses? I watc hed Ig n ac io Ra mbla a nd Evento at WEG 1998; then I was at WEG in Jerez 2002 and fortunate enough to visit many studs. I was amazed at the beauty, intelligence and ridability of these horses. I k n e w t h e n t h at I w o u ld o n e day ride one of my ow n. SarahJa ne Cla rke helped me fi nd my wonderful stallion Esclavo FM. The original plan was to just import a stallion for sport, but Sarah-Jane convinced me to purchase some mares and breed these wonderful horses for the local market, as the cost of importing and the EuroRand exchange rate makes it an u n ac h ievable d rea m for most. Vi k tor ia Sta ndbe rg he lped me find the two mares. It was quite a cha l lenge as a l l th ree horses had a full vet check with 52 x-rays with no abnormalities and correct lines which is standard practice in South Africa. How many PRE horses are there at your stud farm? I have three imported PRE horses. Esclavo FM is my breeding Stallion as well as my competition horse. He is c u r rent ly at t he med iu m level. Altiva M and Loma SJA are broodmares. I have breed three foals from each mare. All six foals are sold. Two foals from each mare by Esclavo FM. Both mares arrived in South Africa in foal. Altiva FM

26

was in foal to Triunfador and Loma SJA to Donoso VII; both are colts. Your best stallion/mare/foal is: Esclavo FM is the most wonderful natured horse with loads of scope for h igh level d ressage. I have also had excellent success w ith him, winning and placing in many national events with international judges. Bot h my ma res a re fabulous. Loma SJA is a slightly more modern type, and Altiva M has remarkable hind leg action. What are your priorities: sports, hacking, breeding, etc.? My ambition is to compete once again in Grand Prix dressage here

Coinciding with his professional career, he combines competition arenas with the preparation of junior elite riders. Lauro participated in European Championships with his juniors for more than a decade. Being sparse in words and plentiful in efforts is his motto; the proof lies in the many successes of his understudies. Together w ith Beatriz Ferrer Salat, Lauro Aguiló is an important r epr e s e nt at i ve of t h e R ide r s’ Association: Dressage Riders’ Club. Actively involved in preparation of the Catalonia Championship, Lauro was more than happy to grant us this interview. For those with no knowledge of the Dressage Riders’ Club, what is it all about? Spain’s Dressage Riders’ Club was created to join together the interests of riders wh ile seek ing out the common good of Dressage riders in Spain. With these ideas in mind, the project was launched by a team made up of representatives of this discipline. Only a few months later, many other professionals joined. The Riders’ Association focuses on e n s u r i n g t he deve lopme nt of D ressa ge t h at be ne f its a l l , without distinction, where riders fe e l s a fe g u a r de d i n t i m e s of vulnerability so that they may all grow together with the support of their colleagues in times of need. We want this to be a club for “all and by all” where members play an active role within the association to fight for their common interests. When was It founded and what has the creation of this Club meant? The club was created at a time when Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation was deciding who would become the Federation’s Technical Manager for Dressage. In the light of rumors about possible candidates with no knowledge of this discipline, the many professionals (85) met on the 8th of January in 2013 at the CECYL Equestrian Center in Segovia. What started as a conversation among

friends, in just a few days, it all beca me a rea lit y tha n ks to the massive response from riders in Spain. After the assembly about what the Club would be all about, we formalized the association. Thus, the actual foundation is due to a need that has been around for some time. The fact is that being united to protect our interests and seek out common goals is an ever-growing urgency. That initial meeting not on ly supported th is i mporta nt i n it iat ive, but it establ ished a historic fact, as it was the first time that so many professionals met together at a single venue. Who are the members of the Board? The Boa rd has eight members: Beat r iz Fer rer-Sa lat, president; L au r o A g u i ló, v ice -pr es ide nt ; Enrique Cruces, secretary; Dimas Sá iz, treasu rer; Jua n José Ru iz Garrido, Rafael Ortiz Alcala-Zamora and Ignacio López Porras, membersat-large and Bobby Fernández de Bobadilla as our consultant. This large group has been selected due to their skill-set and geographic location. A lso, we have tried to com bi ne t he i n novat ive spi r it of youth w ith the professiona l capability of the more experienced riders. Beatriz Ferrer-Salat was u n a n i mou sly e lected a s t he President thanks to her leadership skills for our association. Having i nter nat iona l renow n, she is a unique icon for our discipline and a respected rider here in Spain. As the Club’s vice-president, what are y our responsibilities? I work closely with Beatriz. My main task is to represent her at events when she is unable to attend and respond to interviews such as this one. Dressage, at least In Spain, has a lot of riders. Who may become a member? Indeed, Spain has a large number of riders; to be a member, there a r e t wo opt ion s . O n t h e on e hand, you may be a full-fledged 35

interview member (with voting rights at the Assembly) if you are a rider who is competing or shows proof that you have competed in Dressage throughout your life. You must be of age and have a valid National or Regional Sports License. The other option is to be an associate member (without voting rights) in which case, you may be of age or a junior with legal representation, and be linked to the world of dressage, as a parent, judge, sponsor, etc. Both full-fledged members as well as associate members are necessary in the Dressage Riders’ Club, and of course, they all have access to the information generated.

Currently, how many members are there? I n it i a l l y, t he a ss o c i at ion w a s e x t remely act ive, but w it h t he passing of time, things have slowed down, both on behalf of the Board and the riders. Right now, there is no clear list of members, as the fee is no longer paid. The Board has been forced to publish a statement on ou r web site a n nou nci ng a reduction of the membership fee. What plans does the Club have in the light of the upcoming season, both in the short term and the long term? As a non-profit association, the Riders’ Club has always ensured, a mong other aspects, the correct application of the Rules & Reg u lat ion s, t he we l l-be i n g of horses, has defended riders’ interests and been the spokesperson before the various institutions. That is why our main objective is to hold elections to reestablish the Board of Directors and have, in the near future, establish the foundation for us all to row in the same direction. We need to be together and seek out a person to perform, among others, administrative, treasury and communication tasks. What communication channels does the Club have? Our web site reports a l l of t he eve nts a nd activ ities to be ca rried out. Riders may

For the Club, what does it mean to have greater collab oration with Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation? President Beatriz Ferrer-Salat is a member of t he Com m ission, together with José Daniel Martín Dock x and José A nton io García Mena. The efforts of these three

crucial representatives have been e x t r e m e l y i m p o r t a nt fo r t h e development of recent months. The Club has become a mediator and helped the Control Commission, because, as a Riders’ Association, we back and aid the Commission. Are you of the opinion that the institutions should be more involved in aid for riders? A lot of things could be done, but unfortunately, there is very little investment on behalf of institutions. How would you summarize what the Riders’ Club has done this season? Experience is everything. This year, the Riders’ Club has played a neutral role with the Riders’ Commission, always from the shadows and has backed all types of initiatives. Now, with the new elections, we hope that everything gets back on track to be as beneficial as possible for both riders and Dressage. PRE horses have had a ver y promising season. As an international rider, what advice would you give Spanish riders competing with a PRE? There a re more a nd better PR E horses in the arena and all with a very promising future. We have to encourage people to compete with such horses. I believe that in the future, the team will have 50% PREs. We have to pamper and encourage the breeding of horses that are useful for Dressage, which is where the road to success begings. ¡¡

“Our main goal is to announce elections, to then re-establish the Board of Directors so that in the near future, we establish a solid foundation for everyone to row in the right direction” 38

525 Years of History in The first horses arrived to the New World in 1493, on Columbus’ second voyage TEXT: Elena Vázquez

COULD THERE BE a more classic sight than that of an American rider? From the extensive meadows in the North to the southern Pampa, horses are part of America’s cultural icon. Whether tales pass on from generation to generation or our collective memory, it is impossible to imagine the vast lands of America without its most distinguished animal. However, that has not always been the case. Gauchos, cowboys or Indians riding horses on the Great Plains, it all originated thanks to the first Purebred Spanish Horses that arrived in the late 15th century. Although there are remnants indicating the existence of equines on the continent centuries before, indigenous horses were extinguished about 10,000 years ago. Nowadays, American horses are descent directly from the Purebred Spanish Horses that crossed the Atlantic 525 years ago. 42

Following the mandates dictated by Spain’s Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, Columbus took 24 Spanish stallions and 10 Spanish mares with him on his second expedition to America. The first Purebred Spanish Horse to set foot on American soil took place in 1493 on the island of Española. Hernan Cortes, in 1519, brought the first 16 horses to mainland when he landed in Mexico. However, it wasn’t until 1598, during the Juan de Oñate expedition that horse breeding actually began. This first group of

f PRE America

Purebred Spanish Horses included 25 stallions and 55 mares. A number of historic sources indicate that the first horses in America were Purebred Spanish Horses. As Inca Garcilaso once wrote, “The breeds of horses coming from the reins and provinces of the New World discovered by the Spaniards after 1492 until today are breeds that descend from Spanish mares and stallions, particularly from Andalusia.” In 1585, Hernando de Montalvo pointed out the fact that these horses “derived from the

breeds in Cordoba and Jerez de la Frontera.” Dispersion throughout the continent began thanks to these initial horses. La Conquest owes a lot to the Purebred Spanish Horse. Over the years, the changes from mythological images in the minds of native Indians staring at heavily armed and bearded warriors riding majestic horses, to the essential assistance in covering long distances throughout the American continent are incomparable. On a continent that was four times the size of Europe, any 43

given viceroyalty was comparable, in size, to the Old World. Purebred Spanish Horses played a key role in the conquest for the maneuverability and power that the reduced Spanish troops had, but horses were crucial for the later development of the entire continent. Even the herds of wild horses in America’s Far West owe their gene pool to those initial Purebred Spanish Horses. Back then, horses were the cornerstone of the economy and society in general. For many, horse breeding was a key asset and a major source of income in addition to being a social distinction. Horses were also used in transport of both humans and merchandise until railways (also known as an Iron Horse) were developed 19th century. Even so, and for decades, horses and trains were used simultaneously due to the slow advancement in locomotion technology. For vast swatches of land, horses of Spanish origin were essential; remember that the Indians 44

were completely unaware of horse breeding to the point of believing that the Conquistadors were demigods, half men and half animal, when they saw them arrive on horseback. 525 YEARS LATER In America, although five centuries have come and gone, Purebred Spanish Horses continue to be the

point of reference. Thanks to the breed’s traits, PREs are desirable by all equestrian enthusiasts, as it is the most noble and versatile horse of them all. Their docile personality means that they are ideal for almost any rider and may be used for High School as well as Dressage, Carriage Driving, Doma Vaquera etc… With 400 million native Spanishspeakers, in addition to language, the Americas share their love for the Purebred Spanish Horse with Spain. Today, the PRE Studbook has 27,638 horses and 2,947 stud farms on register. The United States, followed by Mexico, have the largest herds. Nowadays, PRE horses are greatly appreciated in competitions thanks to the ease with which they become one with their rider. Purebred Spanish Horses are found wide and far, in more than 60 countries worldwide, with its demand increasing constantly in America. PRE exports are an important financial asset. Mexico and Costa Rica are 46

right behind Spain on the PRE export ranking list. In fact, Colombia and Ecuador began breeding horses from stud farms in Costa Rica. The enthusiasm and commitment to preserve this breed is such that there are ANCCE-affiliated PRE Breeder Associations in Panama, Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and the US. For the past 525 years, American history has moved handin-hand with the Purebred Spanish Horse. ¡¡

TODAY, AMERICA (NORTH AND SOUTH) ARE HOME TO 27,638 HORSES AND 2947 STUD FARMS, ALL REGISTERED IN THE PRE STUD BOOK.

Feeding Horses

m

photos: Alberto M. BRACERO

MORE AND MORE people are concerned about correctly feeding their horses. They seek information from specialized internet platforms, professional forums, specialists in nutrition, and all in an effort to have horses with adequate body conditions and avoid complicating the health of their horse, such as colic, laminitis, etc. All of these diseases are linked to correct food intake. BASIC NOTIONS WHEN FEEDING HORSES One must remember that in addition to an adequate amount of food to maintain a good body condition, a horse needs to be healthy. It is important for horses to have good dentition as animals must make the most of their food intake by chewing. If a horse’s teeth are in poor condition, it won’t be able to chew correctly, thus being unable to maximize its daily food ration. Likewise, intestinal flora must be adequate, both in terms of quantity and quality to facilitate correct food digestion. HOW BIG SHOULD A RATION BE? According to equine nutritionist Coby Bolger, a horse needs to eat about 2% of its daily weight, which could vary from 1.7% to 2.3% including both for age and hard feed. When calculating a ration, remember to always consider dry material: - Forage: The minimal amount of forage has been established as 1.2% of horse’s body weight. Quality

48

forage is when its fiber count is less than 40%, thus guaranteeing digestibility. For the most part, straw is the most popular, but alfalfa and leguminous plants may also be used. Fiber is digested in the large intestine. For the most part, straw is the most popular forage, but alfalfa and leguminous plants may also be used. Soybean shells and beet pulp are considered super-fiber thanks to their contribution in energy. - Water: horses must always have abundant fresh and clean water. When using automatic watering systems, make sure your horse is drinking correctly. Sometimes, you need to place the bucket in such a way that allows your horse to put its nose inside to freely and easily drink water. A horse drinking little water is linked to an increase in digestive problems. - Cereals: The seeds of cereals c o n t a i n s t a r c h , from which energy is obtained. Commonly used cereals include oats, corn and barley, with oats

49

publicity report

being the most digestible and the cereal with the most fiber; oats may be used without any type of transformation. - Hard feed: maximum daily intake of hard feed should be 1% of the horse’s body weight. This amount could vary from 0.8% and 1.2%, depending on the amount of exercise that a horse performs. Hard feed is a mixture of cereals, oils, vitamins and minerals. In the case of hard feed, these ingredients are milled, treated with heat and shaped as pellets. This process expands the shelf-life and avoids the growth of mold. - Fats: These contribute 2.25 times more energy than starch while at the same time being easily digested in the small intestine, where fatty acids are absorbed. - Proteins: These need to be selected to provide the essential amino acids that equines require. One example is soybean flour; it is the main source of lysine, which is a specific amino acid that is crucial during growth and in adult horses as it helps generate and repair tissue. Remember that protein intake is greater in foals! 50

All of our horses’ needs are covered, adjusted to their age and activities, by the three types of hard feed that we offer

- Minerals: Intake depends on the age and type of horse. CONCLUSIONS It is important to follow these recommendations for a healthy horse. Correct feeding is best when divided into 2 or 3 meals a day to avoid extensive periods without any food. The type of horse and age must also be taken into consideration. At COVAP, all of a horse’s needs are covered, adjusted to their age and activities. Thus, there are three types of hard feed: Ecus Base, Ecus Cría (with additional proteins and soybean flour to provide lysine for correct growth of foals) and Ecus Energy (with a higher fat content and net protein for greater energy). Likewise, COVAP uses correctors so that your horse’s diet has the necessary amount of vitamins and minerals. That is why we use the technology from one of the most important world experts: Alltech. For hard feed to be used correctly, follow the manufacturer’s instructions as they appear on the label. ¡¡ Juana María Almaraz Vela Veterinarian COVAP Technician in Animal Nutrition

FLEXIBILITY

The Key to Dressage TEXT: JORGE CONDE PHOTOS: azahara pérez ILLUSTRATIONS: KIKE LUCAS

f 52

FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT, CORRECT BEND, relaxation and elasticity are but some of the terms used when describing a flexible horse. These qualities are essential for the correct execution of exercises and paces. We will learn why, how to work and what is achieved when flexibility is improved. IN GENERIC TERMS In sports, flexibility is a conditioning skill that everyone must have. In other words, those actions that cause motor action derive from an increase in the ability to get a horse to bend both its spinal column (circles, lateral work, shoulder-in, etc.) and its joints in general. This allows the horse to face exercise with greater agility, skill and in a more flowing manner. We also speak of this regarding how it affects the musculature, as it allows muscles to become less tense and promotes their elongation and shorting. In summary, it grants freedom of movement while at the same time, facilitates collection with no stiffness. There is no need for lengthy explanation about the direct relationship between developing flexibility with other conditioning abilities (strength, resistance and speed). Just as we contemplate the body as a single unit, and although each body area has its

own characteristics and specific exercises, it is clear that these are all inter-connected; by developing one, you facilitate the achievement of the others. The appearance of strength is more easily demonstrated if the body is not tense, rather than when it is rigid, and the same holds true for speed (reaction time in this case, which is of interest for Dressage). These times are faster in a body that is elastic and vice versa. However, a horse does not become elastic and flexible in a single session. In a short period of time, a skillful rider will manage to accomplish relaxation, flow and freedom of movement, which all foster the task of attaining flexibility. It has been scientifically proven that flexibility is a trait that is directly linked to age, temperature, constant training, etc. It begins to disappear at an early age and, once lost due to lack of practice, it is difficult to recuperate. In conclusion, our work must be consistent; we must render importance to this task right from the beginning, and continue working on it until the end of the horse’s competitive career. It is, therefore, a recurrent training parameter. MORE SPECIFICLALY In previous articles, we have discussed this concept as point

dressage

number 2 on the FEI training scale. A lack of flexibility will be evident in many exercises and movements. For example, when a horse is stiff and begins a circle, its rider asks it for bend, it is very easy for this to end up in irregular strides, while at the same time, the hindquarters swing outwards. This example shows that the relationship with rhythm and regularity, as well as with the contact and connection through the back, are constant and inseparable. PLANES OF A HORSE INDICATING THE WORK OBJECTIVES To maintain a horse from the gymnastic point of view, you need to view it from various planes: Longitudinal: the horse’s top-line must be able to stretch forwards and then return to its initial position. Long and short. Usually, this is known as elasticity and affects the body and neck of the horse. Its top-line or frame is very indicative. Muscles in a horse work by elongating and flexing. 54

At this point, one must not overlook the abdominal muscles. A horse cannot do this with only the muscles of its top-line; the muscles of the back and the abdomen work (with and against each other) to create a group muscle action. Thus, when asking a horse to shorten its stride, the forehand must become lighter, so that the hindquarters engage under the body, while the abdominal muscles acquire tension to support a raised withers and dorsal muscles, with tension, but without being rigid. Lateral: left and right. A horse bends laterally towards one side and the other; this is known as bend. When training, many speak about bending the horse and not always in the same direction as it is moving. On occasions, the bend is in the opposite direction, like gymnastics, to align the shoulders or to force the horse to separate its hind legs. At other times, the horse bends in the direction of the hand.

When a horse is stiff or inflexible, training has to have a starting point. The rider needs to locate the main points of resistance in each horse; there are four: the jaw, the head, the back and the neck muscles. Depending on where the stiffness is located, the rider needs to work in one way or another: lateral flexions, disengage resistance or any other method to interrupt that initial tension. Removing the tension or getting rid of the main point of resistance favors greater relaxation and a starting point for the general task at hand. Initially, the horse bends its neck, but by no means can the rider forget that true bend must appear not only in the forehand, but throughout the entire spinal column in an integrated manner. Remember that not all parts of the horse’s spinal column have the same bending capacity. Generally, right from the beginning, your horse will show a certain degree of asymmetry in its

lateral flexibility: one side short and the other long, one more flexible and the other more rigid, or will be naturally concave or convex. The end goal of this training is to have a more flexible horse, but above all else, a more symmetrical one or one that is the same on both reins. Vertical: below and above. Horses cannot always work in the same position. Changing positions –for example one of presentation– with others where the preference is gymnastics, with phases of stretching and pauses for a break in the work are essential. More recently, the emphasis has been on recuperation (pause) and on working in self-carriage, to the extent that many tests now include specific exercises for these. Changing positions implies making sure that the horse is truly seeking the contact, changing the load from one set of muscles to another, or that all the muscles become relaxed. Moreover, this increases the horse’s concentration 55

56

and there are compensations that favor recuperation and conditional capacities such as endurance, strength, flexibility and relaxation. Flexibility of leg joints: this appears when joint flexion increases. By nature, some horses tend to flex their joints more than others. Initially, a horse that maintains its joints straight or rigid, with little flexibility, will have limited strength and decreased expression. Also, there are cases when horses flex too much, and this causes elevation, but without taking advantage of the mechanics and movement. Going against nature is hard, and getting a horse that does not bend naturally to suddenly begin to do it is equally challenging. It is a matter of providing sufficient muscle support and freedom in the limbs so that optimal flexion appears, but within the horse’s natural limits.

EXERCISES THAT PROMOTE FLEXIBILITY Centuries ago, many of the ancient and classic texts (the fundamentals upon which modern equitation are based) were already mentioning the importance of flexibility in horses. The first texts, such as the one by James Fillis, work, for the most part, on the neck with lateral flexion and direct flexion. Flexibility is seen continually in each exercise and general movement, but it is easier to determine whether or not flexibility exists when performing two-track exercises (shoulder-in, leg yielding, half-pass); on circles, voltes and serpentines; in pirouettes and turns on the haunches; when going around the corners; and in the transitions. Undoubtedly, repeated practice of these various exercises makes your horse more flexible and elastic, but to perform these same exercises, your horse needs to have already acquired a certain degree of flexibility. ¡¡

Conformation-Functional Competitions

Presenting a Horse at Having presented your horse in movement, judging continues with the horse at a halt; for that, the animal needs to stop in the center of the arena. For the horse to have good placement, it is essential that the halt be correct, harmonious and balanced. We have to place the horse in an attitude of halt, and to achieve this, the horse has to come to a stop with its entire body to remain balanced. TEXT: Antonio Moya PHOTOS: Carlos NuĂąez

t 60

THE HALT has to show impulsion, the dropping of the pelvis, and collection i n the h i ndqua rters, as wel l as lightening the forehand. The final score will greatly depend on how it is executed. Additionally, it will depend on having a horse with a comfortable attitude, being relaxed but also attentive, he must remain unmoving during the entire presentation while transmitting a sensation of lightness and being in good physical shape. First on the score sheet is the head, where many of the breed parameters are seen. Little is to be influenced here, e xcept pe rhaps head placement; in a natural env i ron ment, the horse must have a profile that is sl ightly a head of the vertical, a nd neit her held very high nor very low. Correct adjustment gives a m o r e

appropriate view than a poorly placed head, which in the end, undermines the entire body region. A bridle with a noseband that is too high or too low, or one that is too loose or too tight gives the appearance of altering the actual head. The same holds true for a throat latch that is too tight or overly loose; this w i l l i n f luence the judg i ng of t he neck a rea, making the horse appear bull-necked, or to have a worse head-neck connection when the throat latch is excessively slack. The neck is an area where we can influence a bit more. Considering that the neck is the horse’s balance, varying postures may be adopted to i n f luence other reg ions to a greater or lesser degree, especially in terms of balance, so that the horse shows a comfortable position and remains immobile for as long as possible. A neck that is

Halt

61

conformation more compresses will seemingly show tension, which will make the horse look uncomfortable and it will tend to move. On the other hand, an excessively long neck makes the horse look as if it were on the forehand, and the front limbs will tend to be camped under. The hindquarters may also, to a greater or lesser degree, be camped, or have the hocks up in the air, and although in rare cases they may be engaged, this will often be with a loss of balance, thus leading to consequences for the score given to limb alignment. Neck height also gives a different view; if the lower edge of the neck is too high, it will be seen as more convex, thus reducing the score. On the other hand, if the neck is too low, it denotes a poor neck insertion into the body, especially at the chest. Ideally, the neck should boast a medium position of height, along with a slight forward moving, without excessive stretching, with the head profile slightly in front of the vertical. The next region to be assessed is the withers, back and loin. These regions transmit movement from the hindquarters forwards. Therefore, when used in movement, their muscle development and conformation are the parameters that earn the score. The most important is for this region to be continuous and in proportion, both in the horse, and then between body areas. Thus, a well-defined wither, that is long, well inserted into the back and clean, followed by a slightly descending and muscular back and a strong ascending, wellinserted loin will lead to a good general score. With correct work, this region can be improved. Moreover, th is helps i mprove the horse’s movement. One must avoid withers that are very prominent, short or lacking in prominence; flee from totally straight backs, those with limited musculature or roached, or poorly inserted, because these create tension in the region, thus leading to a horse that has less fluid movement. In summary, the withers must be slightly higher than the croup, as this is where the dorsal apophasis of the 62

thoracic vertebrae (2 to 7) are located; the back should be descending and its mid-point should be the lowest point of the horse’s top line, as well as being of average length. The loin must be ascending and be approximately half as long as the back. This entire region must show good muscles and flexibility, each to a greater or lesser degree depending on the vertebrae involved. It is now time to assess the croup and tail; a region that shows PRE breed quality. The croup must be welldeveloped and muscular, long, with a good angle; the insertion of the tail falls below the hip line and it must have abundant hair. We must forsake

croups that are short, flat, weak, split, and disproportionate between length and width, as well as those with broken profiles or poorly inserted into the loin. This region may be improved with work and muscle development; however, the accumulation of fatty tissue or a lack of muscle mass should be avoided. Chest, t hora x a nd abdome n constitute the next region, where one must avoid cylindrical or excessively f lat ribs. The same may be said about long abdomens and those that are overly distended in stallions. Chest proportions and muscles are extremely important when assessing this region, so avoid excessively wide

or excessively narrow chests, or those with poorly developed muscles. The most important aspect of this region is that is should never interfere with the horse’s movements. Therefore, any disproportions or under-developed muscles would lead to a low score. A lthough they are all scored separately, we will look at the limbs, bot h front a nd h i nd a nd t hei r alignment, as a whole, as the limb alignment influences our view of the legs and the conformation of their angles. Limbs must be proportionate with the horse, both in length and angles. Equally important is the quality of the hoof, the bone structure and the tendons. 63

morfologĂa

Legs must be free of any softtissue injuries (bursitis, synovitis, etc.), hard-tissue injuries (on bones) and swelling; the most severe of these involve joints, especially when these are bilateral. Therefore, whether during training, transportation or at rest, we need to protect our horses from injury with the corresponding protective measures and always provide them with adequate bedding. To view limb alignment, the horse needs to be as square as possible, 64

but w ithout becom ing obsessed with total perfection. Sometimes, in an effort to hide a slight defect, we force the horse to halt or adopt an inappropriate stance, which is detrimental for the quality of the alignment. It is extremely important when attempting to improve a given region or hide a defect that we are careful not to cause the limbs to be camped under the body, or poorly placed, because this will earn a low score for limb alignment and even for the limbs themselves, in the case of very manifest defects, as it interferes with the lines and angles of the joints. In many horses, the alignment at halt may appear correct, but when moving, the defect appears or even worsens. Thus, horses need to be shod with as natural an alignment as possible so as to interfere as little as possible in their movement and to avoid possible injuries due to overstressing the joints of the same limbs we are trying to correct. In summary, w ith regards to alignment, a slightly bowlegged or toed-out limb that does not hinder movement, would be less serious than a horse with compromised movement due to an attempt to hide this defect. Regarding lateral alignment, being over at the knee is much more serious than being back at the knee. In the end, there are two scores stemming from the previous ones, where breed quality is judged, based on the score for head, croup, tail and movement. Considering that a horse must have at least 18 points for its paces (13.320 for the movement score) two points would then be subtracted from the final score for breed quality. In terms of the score for general c o n d i t i o n a n d c o n fo r m at i o n functional harmony, a high score is never achieved by horses with a low score in a given region, nor those showing a lack of proportionality, muscle development or excessive fat. All in all, the horse will earn a score that is in keeping with how it is presented. If presentation is optimized, we will be able to obtain a better score than if the horse is poorly presented. BREEDING UNIQUE HORSES is the main objective for Yeguada Hnos. Nieto. They seek out that unmatched and much sought after horse that true Purebred Spanish Horse enthusiasts desire. With this basic prerequisite and in search of the best among black coats throughout all of Spain, this stud farm was founded in 1984 where it pooled latent breed

traits such as noble spirit and vitality of PRE horses with beauty and movements. It was all possible thanks to combining three exceptional bloodlines: Yeguada Real, Yeguada Militar (Military Stud Farm) and GanaderĂa El Bocado. Among these, a definite line was achieved with its own hallmark. Start-ups are always difficult, but this venture even more so, as the black coat had almost disappeared. In Spain, and until the 1950s, black horses were used almost exclusively to pull funeral carriages, due to which, the color was socially rejected. Even so, Rodrigo Nieto GĂĄmez dedicated years to carefully selecting black horses so that their sleek coats were enhanced and shined beautifully. Achieving pure black coats is a difficult venture and it has become his passion as he sought to combine purity, beauty, expression, noble spirit and breed functionality all in one. The United States, Germany, Mexico, Italy and France are countries that demand these beautiful steeds. Located in the Catalonian province of Tarragona, the stud farm currently has 187 horses that move between total freedom and breeding on a 27 hectare (approximately 67 acres) farm. The stud farm has 21 stalls measuring 3 x 3 meters (almost 10 x 10 feet), seven paddocks and ten 67

foaling stalls, cared for by seven employees. New born foals have contact with humans at birth. This contact is extremely important; the stud farm dedicates as much time as necessary so that the young foals adapt to human co-existence. Horses are raised outdoors in open fields until they are three years of ages, thanks to which, the horses are both functional and expressive. Among the most outstanding horses, outstanding for their beauty, intelligence and movements, are Favorito LXVIII, Bribón, Excesivo, Suspiro, Hispano, Lanzador, Cautivo, Rebujito, Celoso, Escándalo, Remache, Candelario, Goloso, Imperioso, Galeón, Lucero, Arte and Recorte. With these horses, Yeguada Hnos. Nieto has earned an endless number of awards, including Best Stud Farm at national competitions. ¡¡

Equine Graphic Descriptions and Coat Color The description of a horse could be best described as an outline (diagram), overview or profile. As the dictionary states for each of these respective words, it “is a general account, description or report, indicating only the main features of a subject” or “a general outline of a subject or situation,” or “the summary of a process, activity or set of characteristics.” TEXT: Carlos Sañudo Astiz

The description of a horse may be performed from many points of view, from the poetic to the emotional. It would be truly fulfilling to discuss horses from a lyric point of view, given that many deserve the honor; besides, it is tempting to discuss the history behind the extensive terminology used to describe a horse. In a more and more global world, animals quickly cross

borders, and the genetics that define their colors and uniqueness advance even faster. This all forces to change and adopt clear, common and mutually agreed upon terminology to standardize, as stated by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the many details required to provide a written description (narrative or text profile) and complete the silhouette (diagram

or graphic description) on equine passports. In summary, to correctly fill out the corresponding document: individual equine passport, which includes the outline diagram. The European Union (EU Regulation 262/2015) states that “To ensure that equidae are correctly described in their accompanying identification documents, issuing bodies should endeavor to follow best practices and train the personnel entrusted with the description of the animals, for example, by following the guidelines provided by the Fédération Équestre Internationale.” Spain’s legislation regarding the mandatory “terminology” goes even further, including the latest 2016 law (Royal Decree 676/2016), which indicates that the outline diagram may be substituted for a photograph if the horse has a microchip: “The competent authority may authorize the issuing bodies to not complete, by means of drawings, the information of

points 12 to 18 of the outline diagram of the identification document that establishes, in appendix for EU Implementation Regulation nº 2015/262 of the Commission…, providing that it complies with two conditions: that the animal has been equipped with a transponder and that the outline diagram is replaced by a photograph.” Of course, no technical or methodological specification is mentioned, such as how that photography is to be taken, with which, and as stated by Spain’s Association of Specialized Equine Veterinarians (AVEE): “a photograph would never be better than a good description, as anyone can take a photograph and a good graphic description can only be drafted by a well-trained person.”

In a more and more global world, animals quickly cross borders, and the genetics that define their colors and uniqueness advance even faster

COAT COLOR BACKGROUND Coat color is one of the main characteristics when it comes to completing the graphic description. 73

KARIN TIECHE

breeding program

The problem arises when trying to classify said colors, as indicated in the statistics provided: According to Medlej (2016), there are 128 coat colors, including a number of variations among piebald, appaloosa and 216 tones. This is trumped by Sigre’s (1984) 251 tones, although only 25 coat colors, some of which are interesting: “colorado sangre de toro” (bull blood red)” or “palomo huevo de pato” (duck eggshell pigeon). Sponenberg (2009) established 28 groups or coat models that 74

contemplate 115 colors. Parés & Puche (1994), considering coat colors and variation, offer 54 possibilities while Sánchez Belda (2012) denoted to 33 coat colors. Officially, the range of coat colors established by Spain’s General Register for Individual Animal Identification (equines) (RIIARIEQUI) is 22 coat colors. The FEI (International Equestrian Federation) states twelve colors and a total of 21 variations (between the 12 coat colors and the corresponding color intensity variations). The Weatherbys document establishes four basic colors in horses, and eleven additional. The International Lexicon (IL) limits the number to six. The task at hand is more than complicated when seeking to harmonize terms and it should all start with Schools of Veterinarian Science, because further down the line it gets even more entangled. To understand the current situation of this harmonization, Vázquez and I consulted with Schools about the 22 coat colors that appear as exclusive options on official identification documents, incidentally, this number will have to be expanded due to the developments in genomic techniques. Sadly, our results indicate that of these 22 colors, there is only a unanimous agreement for five: chestnut, black, bay, piebald and in the case of stripes, there is negative consensus as there is no explanation anywhere. With that, you can now imagine what happens at the grassroots level. GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION: FOUNDATION AND PROCEDURE Following the various international proposals and classic terminology in Spanish, we have drafted a book with the title indicated above. Our objective is to provide knowledge regarding this topic for breeders, riders, general enthusiasts and people involved in the world of horses so that they better understand our horses and have standard criteria to move forward with 21st century equine technology. The book includes: 1. A dictionary of terms regarding the animal species, age, sex,

76

productive use, place of origin and occasionally, the season of birth or weaning. In many cases, these terms appear in the dictionary by the Real Academy of the Spanish Language and their equivalents in English. 2. A proposal of names for the body regions, which, according to External (Phenotypic) Science are recognizable in horses. This is the case of the upper line of the neck (crest), where the mane lies, falling, in general, on either side of the neck, independently of the breed, coat color or sex. In certain breeds, such as the Fjord horse from Norway, the mane is, by nature, upright. It is divided into three zones: upper, mid

and lower crest, with many horses having short or even totally clipped manes. 3. One chapter provides ample information regarding coat colors. We have already commented the existing confusion; add fashion and obsessions, hereditary laws, fate, dialectic confusion and out limited ability to assess differences all enter the mix, which leads to an extensive variety of coats, to finally observe that only a few have been classified and predominate in equine history: three colors prior to domestication (10,000 years BC) and practically the same today, 5000 years later (Varela, 2017). In this sense, a Table (1) is presented where we attempt to standardize the various names depending on the institution, including those used by ANCCE. Likewise, the chapter includes sections dealing with histologic fundamentals and the biochemistry of color, the importance of coat color and their classification, including classic, official and genetic names, as well as their equivalence in English. It also covers the genetic and practical diagnosis of color in the field, indicating most of the mutations that explain all of the various coat colors detected by specialized labs. This facilitates the combination of crossings to maximize the possibilities of having a foal with a certain coat color. Ten examples are included in addition to the PRE certification process. At the same time, it includes a section about the uniqueness of the direction of hair and complementary aspects such as the colors appearing on a coat color and that are very useful when completing the graphic description. 4. How to complete a graphic description, how to execute and describe it, with the corresponding examples and a practical protocol for what should and should not be done. 5. Finally, the book includes a chapter dedicated to European and Spain’s national and regional legislation, as well as the bibliography, accessible for readers through the author’s address. ¡¡

“We Want to Renew our Title as World’s Best Exhibitor”

Frida de Trujillo.

IN 2008, Yeguada Trujillo acquired foundation stock to breed Purebred Spanish Horses, thus continuing a breeding tradition that is rooted in the family’s own history. Since then, there have been a number of noteworthy accomplishments such as competitions in the United States, which since 2010 have obtained excellent results. By 2012, the stud farm had premiered in Spanish conformation arenas with Jalapeño de Trujillo, to conclude the season with the Young Stock Spanish National Champion Award. Yeguada Trujillo returned to Spain’s competition grounds in 2014 to win a number of awards and trophies, including SICAB. In 2015, the team was expanded and more acknowledgements were earned such as Reserve World Colt Champion, Reserve World Functionality Champion and World Stallion Champion. A year later, Yeguada Trujillo returned home with a number of medals and was proclaimed SICAB 2016 World’s Best Exhibitor. Simultaneously, competitions in the US continued where even more awards were earned and where the stud farm continued as unbeaten Best Exhibitor in the United States. Equally noteworthy are the stud farm’s breeding success, as in recent years, it has earned a number of prizes for its best horses, bred and born in the US. Despite Yeguada Trujillo being a relatively new stud farm, with hardly a decade of experience, it has earned important results. The 79

stud farm prefers to select “horses with conformation quality, always within the prototype for Purebred Spanish Horses, and based on three essential factors: movement, breed quality and rideability,” explains technical director Víctor Molina. “As breeders, we select quality, and based on breed type, horses have to clearly show that they are Purebred Spanish Horses.” The professional career of Yeguada Trujillo is characterized by its strong commitment with Conformation Competitions, although since 2016, it is also competing in Dressage. For Molina, the future of its Purebred Spanish Horses “lies in any discipline where horses compete. The end market moves towards recreational activities and sports, whatever the category. Rideability and functionality are essential,” he adds. After having earned significant awards and prizes in Conformation, this specialist states that “we also want to reach the podium in Dressage with horses such as Romero de 80

Trujillo, 2015 World Conformation Champion, or new-comer Simpático Candau II”. There are a number of most outstanding horses: Pantera de Trujillo, Solitaria XXXIII, Frida de Trujillo, Doncella de Trujillo, Solano de Trujillo, Romero de Trujillo, Jalapeño de Trujillo, Urgido and Osado de Trujillo. Throughout 2017, Yeguada Trujillo has earned the trophy as Best Exhibitor on several occasions, in addition to several other Special Awards. At the Young Horse Selection Tests, two horses presented were considered “Excellent.” Molina points out that “this proves that we are on the right road for Dressage.” At SICAB 2017, Yeguada Trujillo competes with 10 to 12 horses, in both Dressage and Conformation. “We are pulling out all the stops with a team that has been reinforced, but in all truth, it is more and more difficult. Our goal is, among others, to confirm out title as World’s Best Exhibitor.” ¡¡

SUISUN CITY, in Solano county of northern California, is home to Yeguada Del Real Castillo. Although recently founded, the stud farm has earned a place among the best thanks to the awards earned, with 19 Purebred Spanish Horses--11 mares of which 10 are approved breeders--and eight stallions, six of which are also approved. Owner César Del Real Castillo has always loved the world of horses. It all began when he purchased a horse for riding and parades; then he moved on to Conformation Competitions. That was a turning point and he wanted

to participate in this contagious discipline that is growing in both the US and Central America. That was when he purchased his first PRE Horses. His first foray in the competition world was in 2016. After this initial contact, César Del Real Castillo acquired more PREs, purchased in Spain and in the US; these horses are obtaining good results. Throughout this year 2017, he competed nationally and internationally to always place among the top four. In Spain, he participated at competitions held in Segovia, Reus, Salamanca and Ávila, to earn Best Movements at the first three with his mare Hebra de Trujillo and stallion Danubio de Trujillo. In America, he has also grossed excellent results at a number of events. These include an international competition held in Las Vegas--the IV PRE Cup--and the Feria del Caballo Español in California. Outstanding horses were presented at these venues; Amapola de Trujillo, Genovés XVII, Armas Inervo, Danubio de Trujillo, Candela de Trujillo II and Trainero de Trujillo all placed first. Mare and Stallion Breed Champion, Adult Mare and Stallion Champion, several gold medals, a number of silvers and special mentions are among the many awards earned.

FOR THE FUTURE, STUD FARM PRIORITIES FOCUS ON BREEDING HORSES FOR DRESSAGE AND CONFORMATION. THE HOPE IS THAT THESE TWO ASPECTS GO HAND IN HAND TO OBTAIN AN INTERMEDIATE PRODUCT

84

These successes show the level of the 14 horses on the stud farm that are competing; they are bred and raised in freedom on the 12-hectare Rancho Del Real Castillo, of which 10 hectares are pastures. Its facilities--cared for by two grooms and a trainer--have a standard competition arena, walker and sables for mares and stallions. Also, during the competition season, additional staff is incorporated to the team, including a presenter and rider from Spain. Special mention must be made of the dance horses; a more baroque Spanish horse, more beautiful and with stronger knees to execute the dance. At the Feria del Caballo Español held last May in California, his horses were proclaimed Competition Dance Champions.

César’s passion is shared by his entire family. His wife Patricia and sons César and Gabriel actively participate in the patriarch’s dream to enjoy the family hobby. For the future, stud farm priorities focus on breeding horses for Dressage and Conformation. The hope is that these two aspects go hand in hand to obtain an intermediate product. César does not want horses that are exclusively functional that forsake breed quality, nor horses that although perfectly beautiful, are useless. The focus is on a quality horse between Conformation and Dressage. The stud farm is playing for high stakes at competition and with the best possible horses. Their next appointment? SICAB 2017, of course! ¡¡

he Florida Regional Championship (Region 3) was held from the 5 th to the 8 th of October at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (Wellington). The participants included 12 Purebred Spanish Horses. The most outstanding of the Championship

was the bronze medal earned by Janne Rumbough riding Junior, son of Gaucho III, in the category Amateur (GP). On the first day, she performed a Grand Prix that placed her third; she repeated this success in Freestyle. Janne Rumbough is 73 and was the first person to import a PRE to the United States; her husband Stanley M. Rumbough purchased Gaucho III as a surprise present. Originally from Denmark, Janne is an American citizen who has ridden Junior since the Young Horse Tests and continued with him in Grand Prix. In recent years, she has focused on test reserved for Amateurs. Heater Boo riding Divertimento -- a horse that competed with Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén and later with Chris Von Martels -- became the Amateur Champion with a 67% average. A considerable number of PRE horses participated in Regions 1, 7 and 9. Katylyn McCoy with Bandolero CDF (Young Riders: 70.00) and Stacey Hastings with Guateque IV (Prix St. Georges: 68.160) were the riders with the highest scores at the USPRE High Point Award in Region 1, which includes the states of Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Region 7 covers California and Nevada, where 10 PRE horses competed, while in Region 9, there were seven PRE participants. ¡ ¡
