President of ANCCE

Final Months of Office After having recovered from the tremendous coming and going needed for a new edition of SICAB, our sights are once again on the future and my last semester as President of ANCCE. It seems impossible that almost four years have gone by since my term in office began; nevertheless, time flies and there is nothing we can do about it. SICAB was quite positive at all levels, except perhaps for the odd incident. It seems that the PRE Horse market is making a comeback. Over the upcoming six months, I will be facing this time with high spirits to establish the final foundation of my presidency prior to elections during the first semester of 2018. During this time, my intention is to consolidate all of the rules and regulations affecting conformation. For this, once again, we have contacted members to request opinions in an effort to obtain details about those rules that have direct consequences for competitions, both the Rule Book and the Judging Manual. Also, I will be giving sports a final push by creating a new category: ANCCE Cup for Working Equitation. Our goal is to promote inexpensive participation of members in the Performance Tests and the ANCCE Cup while taking the reins in the selection of Spanish Horses going to the World Young Horse Championship, organized by the World Federation of Sport Horse Breeder Associations, of which we are a member. It is totally irrational that in recent years, we have been massively represented by imported Central European breeds that fail to benefit us in any way, shape or form. In this regard, our project has been presented before Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation. In terms of future editions of SICAB, significant efforts have been made to guarantee that my future successor need not be concerned with a number of vital details. Currently, all of the 2017 sponsors are guaranteed for the next edition, independently of any others that might be incorporated. Similarly, the feasibility of having more VIP boxes is being studied from the structural standpoint to cover the needs and demands of a larger number of breeders. In any case, I would like to count on the collaboration and cooperation of all breeders. Based on this, I encourage you to formulate constructive criticism by forwarding your concerns and offering any suggestion you deem appropriate. Of course, one must consider the social benefit that such ideas have for all of our members. I wish you the best in 2018!

At the 27th edition of the International Purebred Spanish Horse Trade Fair (SICAB), organized in Sevilla from the 14th to the 19th of November by the National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association was a historic success. When comparing the statistics from previous years, upwards trend continues with the participation of 333 horses from 152 stud farms. There was a good group of Judges who were responsible for judging the horses entered in conformation were: Aida Huertas Domínguez, Vicente Jaime Granel Iborra, Agustín Aragón Domínguez, Antonio Vázquez Fernández, José Ramón Fernández Villegas, Sául Dávalos Vidal, Juan Manuel Carnero Sánchez and Alberto Abajo Romo. Functionality was the responsibility of Juan Heredia Díaz and Miguel Morales Cobos. This year, the number of stud farms seeking the most sought-after honor--World’s Best Breeder Award--was limited to four, as was the case last year. Those stud farms--María Fernanda de

La Escalera, Yeguada Andic, Yeguada Martet and Mater Christi--proved their years of dedication and careful selection. Mater Christi, with a difference of three points (15.500), was crowned World’s Best Breeder for the third consecutive year. Reserve Best Breeder went to Yeguada Andic, with an accumulative score of 12.000 points. This year, SICAB was more international than ever before. Yeguada Batán from Mexico and Yeguada Trujillo from the USA together with Albert Boya Abadía from Spain presented their own horses, as well as others with different brands to compete for the Best Exhibitor Award. In the end, the Award was for recently founded Yeguada Batán that premiered with a score of 19.167 points to attain one of the highest honors. This stud farm has made history as the first Mexican stud farm to earn a World Award. Throughout the season, breeders established training strategies to be as competitive as possible and place their PRE in the highest ranking places. The moment of truth comes when horses enter the SICAB arena. Months of dedication, dreams, objectives and

ADULT CHAMPIONS The battle for the title as World Champion was disputed among the first places in Sections 8, 10 and 12. Hebro Bio (winner of Section 8 and owned by Yeguada Bionest), Romero de Trujillo (horse owned by Yeguada Trujillo and bred by José Franco Sánchez, winner of Section 10) and the favorite Atrevido Mango (Champion of Section 12, bred and owned by Yeguada Andic). The game was on! All contestants battled it out until the very last trot. Finally, a horse from Yeguada Andic, Atrevido Mango, was proclaimed the 2017 World Champion. Atrevido Mango is the son of Colombiano X (Rondeño IX-Colombiana II) and Atrevida LXIII (Perdigón XVIII-Viajera III). The blood of renowned stallions runs through his veins, including Albero II or famous Rondeño IX, a historic horse from the Bohorquez bloodline that was Spanish National Champion in both 2002 and 2005. Atrevido Mango offered the best odds at the

poles, and in the end, he was the all-out-winner. His performance throughout the season--remember that he was Absolute Champion at the 38th Andalusian Championship as well as at Cabalcor 2017--was that of a winner. His fitness and the quality of his paces charmed the SICAB Judges. When it came to paces, he showed a perfect 4-time walk, his trot was very expressive and he was bursting with breed quality, especially his head, neck and other body regions. This horse is a PRE masterpiece. Foco IV (Dátil VII-Foca III) repeated his place on the classification roster to defend his 2016 title as Reserve World Champion. This horse, owned by Albert Boya Abadía and bred by Yeguada Los Retamales CC, placed second in Section 12. Alba de Torreluna, Mabileña DAV and Panadera LVIII were victorious in their corresponding Sections. They became members of a very select group of mares seeking the title as Mare Champion. World Mare Champion at SICAB 2016, SICAB Champion in 2013, in 2014, and Reserve Champion in 2015, Panadera

LVIII, bred and owned by Mª Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera, was once again proclaimed 2017 World Mare Champion. Crowned as the Champion of Section 12, she was no match for anyone! Invincible is the best adjective to describe this bay mare. Throughout her career as an athlete, all of her successes placed her in the pole position as one of the greatest mares in SICAB history. With her success as World Champion, Panadera LVIII expands her legend even further. In conformation terms, Panadera LVIII has outstanding breed qualities, with extreme beauty, expressiveness and very feminine. When it comes to movements, her length of stride was most impressive with strength and impulsion when using her hindquarters. With a Champion familytree, her sire, Zoilo IX, was Youngstock Reserve Champion in 2006, and her dam, Jaquetona XVI, has earned a number of medals in the Section for cobras, descendant of the Ganador VIII lineage and sire of the only Elite Breeding Stock, Ermitaño III. Undoubtedly, this is a mare that defines the PRE in every sense of the word… majestic, beautiful and functional in her movements.

SECTION 8

It was a neck to neck battle for Reserve World Mare Champion with Alba de Torreluna, Mabileña DAV and Vinatera BAT competing for the award. The mare from Yeguada Batan, Vinatera BAT, bred by Miguel Bohórquez, was proclaimed Reserve World Champion for the second consecutive year. BEST MOVEMENTS Of the many horses presented during the 5-day competition, the quality of the paces showed the excellence of today and a promising future for PRE horses. When it comes to the mechanics of movement, the 4-time walk was ever more outstanding, the symmetry of the trot was springy and regular. Lastly, the contesting horses cantered around the arena three times, where with each round, they offered a more and more correct rhythm. Rareza Rosa, Serón, Retama MFE, Romero de Trujillo and Atrevido Mango were the winners in their respective sections seeking the Adult Champion of Movement.

earned the title as the best example at SICAB in terms of movement (Adult Champion of Movement). This beautiful bay, bred and owned by Yeguada Andic, was also the winner of Section 12. The quality of his paces is truly impressive, especially his trot with excellent suspension, elevation and strength with noteworthy flexion of his hind joints. Atrevido Mango maintained his leadership throughout the functionality test while the other contestants fluctuated from one position to another in the classification. Anything and everything is possible at a competition. Even the slightest mistake turns detrimental while it is always possible to make a comeback. Once the tests concluded in the arena, Atrevido Mango came out on top and there were not rivals for him, to become the World Functionality Champion with a final score of 19.298, at the hand of his presenter and rider Daniel Ortega Hervás, who earned the admiration of the entire sector. His professionalism combined with his talent made him one of the presenters with the most promising future. Throughout his career, he has earned an endless number

of awards. At SICAB 2017, Daniel Ortega has established a world record with his partner Atrevido Mango to conclude a season with the first triple gold in the history of SICAB: World Functionality Champion, World Champion of Movement and Absolute World Champion. It is more than unusual to see a palomino horse obtain so many good results at conformation-functional competitions. When it came to movements, Merlín Arán (HortelanoSB-Ilusión Mayou), bred by Campa La Selva and owned by Alberto Boya Abadía, flaunted his quality. Ridden by Juan Lecina, and after the functionality test, the horse move from sixth to second place on the roster, to conclude as the Reserve World Functionality Champion. YOUNG HORSES From the adult horses with ample experience in the arena, we shall now move on to the younger generation of new faces that will be the next cohort of PRE winners. First and second place in Sections 3 and 5, which are two and three-year-old fillies, included Nora SB, Primavera BAT, Ilbaína JB and Bailaora Torreluna.

SECTION 11

The World Filly Champion was no match. Primavera BAT was crowned Champion for the second consecutive year. Bred by María Zara Pérez and owned by Yeguada Batán, this bay filly left everyone starstruck when she entered the arena. Boasting much more muscle and better shaped than last year, Primavera BAT is a diamond. No doubt, this is a more than beautiful horse in conformational terms with outstanding proportions when it comes to breed quality. Regarding movements, Ilbaína JB, Hosado de Trujillo, Primavera Bat and Belmonte de Torreluna battled it out to win the title as World Youngstock Champion of Movement. Primavera BAT signed off with a double world triumph as she returned home with the Youngstock Champion of Movement award. It was all possible thanks to her exquisite movements. Reserve World Champion of Movement was for Bailaora de Torreluna, owned by Yeguada Yaco and bred by Yeguada de Torreluna.

second were: Lorenzo S’Hort Petit, Ítalo de la Vega, Fer Guatile and Inmenso Mater, respectively. Once again, the game was on and it played out to the very last minute. Second place in Section 12, Foco IV, owned by Albert Boya Abadía and bred by Los Retamales.

Third place in Section 12, Jalapeño de Trujillo, owned by Yeguada de Trujillo and bred by Yeguada Vilaire.

You could cut the excitement with a knife. In this profession, the in-depth knowledge of the judges, their eye for details when observing and fairness are but some of the key elements needed for the task. Judges play a key role when it comes to the scores; depending on the results, one or another of the four horses takes the stand. Finally, Ítalo de la Vega, the colt that championed Section 6, bred and owned by Arturo Fernández de la Vega Senra, concluded the 2017 season with the best results to become the 2017 World Colt Champion. This son of awardwinning Nero II is a chip off the old block. His closest rival was Lorenzo S’Hort Petit, who competed against Inmenso Mater for second place. Finally, Inmenso Mater, from Yeguada Mater Christi, took the award as Reserve World Colt Champion. COBRAS The last two sections are for the 3 and 5-mare cobras, respectively. Presenting mare cobras is not just a beauty

contest. It is much more as a number of other parameters such as movement, handling, uniformity of the coat color, height, conformation, breed characteristics and, of course, walk and trot together as a group all enter into play. Presenting a 3-mare cobra is essential when seeking the Best Breeder Award. With 14 participants, the grey cobra with Hechura Mater, Gloria Mater and Farándula Mater from Yeguada Mater Christi, came out victorious in Section 13 (83.900). In the last category of the Championship-Section 14--there were five participating cobras. The five bay mares from Yeguada Batan were the Champions with a total score of 79.250. The curtain fell on the 27th edition of SICAB with the announcement of the Special Awards. It was an extremely high-quality edition, where the number of participating horses was even greater than last year with several horses defended their 2016 titles. It was a lot of work, excitement, emotions, expectations, disappointment, goals and objective met with feelings and sensations that could be felt in the atmosphere. Day after day, breeders, presenters and riders give

everything they have to improve the Purebred Spanish Horse as a breed. The beauty, harmony of forms, grandeur and quality of the PRE horses presented was extremely stimulating, as it provides a glimpse of breed development. The remarkable triple achievements of Atrevido Mango are a milestone in conformation history. It is an achievement that will be difficult--if not impossible-to equal or surpass and has earned a page in SICAB history books. Panadera VLIII is worthy of mention. Once again, this mare returns to the highest place on the conformation podium. As the American saying states, SICAB is the place to be when it comes to the world of Purebred Spanish Horses. This event is the world epicenter that summons PRE horse lovers from the four corners of the earth. It is a place where the audience is not just a mere viewer, but people with ample knowledge of the breed and who enjoy the best of the best Purebred Spanish Horses from all over the world. With this third edition of the World Championship, SICAB closes its gates after another successful year. ¡ ¡

Conformation-interview Pedro Pingarrón.

MATER CHRISTI

WORLD’S BEST BREEDER

f

For a third consecutive year, Mater Christi is considered World’s Best Breeder. What does it mean to win this award once again? The consolidation of the brand “Mater Christi” coincides with our tenth anniversary; it is world-class recognition of our efforts, selection and enhancement when creating a new bloodline with its own characteristics; treasured in its genetics are excellence of conformation, movement and potential for dressage. At competitions, we have always tested our horses by comparing them with what the sector is breeding at any given time. This allows us to reach conclusions and advance, while at the same time showing the level of breeding reached. Undoubtedly, the maximum of these competitions is the World Championship. This season, prior to the final at SICAB 2017, we participated in eight national competitions, judged by ten different judges, to obtain 51 awards. Thus, the results at SICAB are but the confirmation of the breeding moment we are experiencing. What is the key to your success as a breeder? In 2007, we began with a select group of PRE broodmares, most were Spanish National

36

Champions and major competition awardwinners. But the importance of those foundation mares, in conformation terms, is that they have significant virtues and are all very correct in other aspects, with good mechanics in their movements, resulting in good anatomy, with these traits being genetically fixed. Their parents, relatives and progeny are proof of this fact; once the new generation has become dams, genetic cohesion is seen, thus creating two differentiated and complementary groups. We then had to verify how the various sire stallions––also Spanish National Champions––mated with the mares to fix excellence. Similarly, these stallions serve as correctors for traits we want to improve. With this same criterion, we incorporate stallions with our own brand; after three years, those Champions are producing a new generation. Currently, most of our broodmares are covered by stallions breed on our stud farm. Each mare is matched to a stallion considered the best improver. That is our breeding method; there is a single creator, but it is our responsibility to offer the best proposals. Our horses are outstanding; they faithfully combine breed quality, excellent athletic

complexion, good mechanics in their movements, a very noble heart––the kind that gives everything––and with a good head. They are very smart horses that enjoy working. All horses fully comply with PRE breed traits and are distinguishable thanks to their excellent upper lines, good withers, well-proportioned backs that are strong and flexible, with functional, somewhat ascending and slightly convex, and wellplaced loins with wide croups that are well angled, rounded and muscular. Their tails are well inserted, with good alignment and limbs that are well-proportioned with good angles. The cobra formed by Hechura Mater, Gloria Mater and Farándula Mater have been proclaimed World Champions in Section 13. What does this success mean to you, as you have competed with three other mares? What are their strong points? In my opinion, the most beautiful and representative category where a breeder competes is the cobra section. It brings together quality and standardized forms, thus showing what a breeder has achieved. In our case, the stakes were very high; at the last two World Champion editions, we managed to win the Section with a cobra that included Distinguida Mater, Emblema Mater and Estampa Mater. They are all daughters of Triunfadora XXX, the first triple Spanish National Mare Champion. In the past three seasons, this cobra is an allout winner to have accumulated ten golds and a silver medal. However, breeders must face one challenge: is continued development for each foaling to surpass the previous season. Our 2017 competition cobra best represents our developments, the current moment and the mares we are breeding. The members of this cobra have excellent individual quality; among them, there is a World and Reserve Mare Champion and another Reserve Mare Champion in various sections. More importantly, when they are together, it is almost impossible to differentiate one from another; they are practically identical, all dark grey, which is another milestone. The Judging Manual does not penalize the possible tones within the same type of gray; it all depends on age.

Contrary to our previous cobra, these mares are not sisters. This shows that their shared conformation and movements are well established genetic traits at our stud farm. Throughout the 2017 season, we have participated at eight competitions, including SICAB. The cobra was unbeatable and managed to earn 83.900 points at the World Championship. To date, it was the highest score granted to a cobra. What projects are awaiting Inmenso Mater, Hechura Mater or Genio Mater? The most important aspect is not their achievements as World Champions or Reserve World Champions but rather their function as breeding stock. Both Genio Mater and Hechura Mater have already been tested and have proven the clear development obtained with each birth. In the case of Inmenso Mater, she will foal next year. We hope she is as successful as her sire, Desaire Mater; has already has two offspring on the SICAB podium. What is the line of work this year? We hope that 2018 is another step forward in to obtain the ideal PRE prototype we desire with all our hearts. We are investing all our attention and dedication to give what is dearest to us: life. How would you summarize the success of Yeguada Mater Christi at SICAB 2017? From the competitive point of view, SICAB 2017 has been a challenge. It was the first time that a breeder seeking the Best Breeder Award participated in eleven of the twelve sections, with eighteen horses, all with their own brand, and with two different cobras. Usually, one participates in six or seven sections, and a 3-mare cobra that also appears in the 5-mare cobra. We have successfully accepted the challenge and won ten awards, including World’s Best Breeder, coinciding with our tenth anniversary as a stud farm. Once you place everything on the balance, Mater Christi’s success at SICAB has been truly satisfying. You really can’t ask for much more. The quality and standardized line of the study farm and our human resources have met the challenge of these champions. It is only fair that we publicly recognize and appreciate their wonderful efforts and work. ¡¡ 37

At this 27th edition of SICAB, for the second consecutive year, para-dressage was once again included in the competition program. All athletes are unique but without any doubt, riders in para-dressage dazzle everyone thanks to their desire to excel. The desire to move forward and conquer obstacles are what they demonstrate on a daily basis in the competition arena. With four participants, Grade IV and Grade VI had only one participant, while there were two in Grade V. As the only participant, Roberto Aguilera ran away with victory in the Grade IV class, with Jalón XIV, owned by Roberto Aguilera and bred by José Antonio Olives Agustín. Antonio Torres Navarro, riding Pinzón V, bred by Manuel Soto Flores and owned by Yeguada Hermano Torres, achieved first place in the Grade V test for teams (65.000%), while in Individuals, Jesus Modesto, riding Valioso X, owned and bred by Yeguada de la Cartuja Hierro del Bocado, reached the top step on the podium with 64.286%. Lastly, but by no means less important, in the same way as Roberto, Alejandro Espejo led both the tests for Teams and Individuals at Grade VIa, riding Imperial 15, a horse bred by Francisco Sánchez Corado and owned by Espejo García. Admirable is the word that best defines the courage of these riders when presenting their tests with their faithful partners. Stride by stride, these riders, together with their horses, battle daily to attain their objectives. We take our hats off to these great horsemen, who ride with such enthusiasm. Thank you for teaching us so much. ¡ ¡

For the second year running, all the tests involving the Junior categories were performed in pavilion three, the same as all the other Dressage tests. First place in the U12 category (Alevines) went to Polina Mamkina, riding Carla de Pereto, a mare owned and bred by Yeguada el Pereto. Their cumulative score was 70.221%. In the test for teams on the first day, Polina placed first, while, on the second day, in the individual test, Cayetano Rives riding Galán RAM, bred by Rafael Ayala Muñoz and owned by Alejandro Pina Pamies, snatched first place. The tests ridden by Polina were correct, beautifully in hand and with a superb contact, performing some good transitions both upwards and downwards in the various paces. Araceli Pons and Mejorano V were not able to put the cherry on the cake at SICAB 2017, after a fantastic season. As a fabulous Champion of Spain, Araceli has had a competition season worth 10 out of 10, both nationally and internationally. Unfortunately, over these two days of competition, the horse was unable to produce his best, as he was very tense. Their competition team-mate, Jessica Castro, riding Indiferent, a horse bred by Eugassada Germans Ribera and owned by C&C, was proclaimed U14 Champion (Infantile) (66.283%). With one point more in the overall score than Araceli, Jessica Castro presented two very flowing tests with a lot of precision when performing the exercises and with her horse very well in hand. Marta Serrano riding Altanero ER (67,469%), owned and bred by El Reguero y Chaparral, are U18 (Juvenile 0) Champions. In both tests, Marta led the line-up with averages above 67%. At times, the horse appeared slightly on the forehand but had correct rhythm in the exercises. As for the U18 test (Juvenile), Sonia Ponce together on Róbalo, owned by Ponce Campano and bred by Portillo Gijón, were crowned champions of this category for the second year running, with an average of 67.200%. They performed some really flowing trot exercises combined with a beautiful contact. The horse has improved greatly in his execution of the flying changes when compared with last season. Lastly, the test for Young Riders. The same as Sonia Ponce, Jesus Esteban Cornejo, riding Mío II, bred by

Ignacio Bravo Martínez and owned by the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Ronda, was proclaimed champions for the second consecutive year. With a cumulative score of 67.960%, on both days the rider was both winner in Teams and Individuals. The two-track work at trot was performed well with a great length of stride, but the horse lost the rhythm on several occasions in the trot extensions. As their overall score was around 62% last year, their progress has been enormous, above all, in the flying changes, which are much straighter, more bouncy and with no faults in the strides. ¡¡

Dressage is a discipline where concentration, harmony and elegance are the three main principals. The newest horses on the circuit––the 4-year-olds––make their debut in the competition arena. Under the attentive eyes of several judges, horses and riders must demonstrate their correct and elegant dominion of the three paces, and perform a series of exercises. The unquestionable winner of the test for 4-year-olds was Molinero SFC, ridden by Alba Abollo, owned and bred by Yeguada Arroyomonte, with a total score of 82.200%. They exceeded the 80% barrier both in the preliminary and the final test, with the judges rewarding the quality of their paces. For the most part, the judges are very cautious when it comes to awarding scores of 9 or 10; nevertheless, in the final, they rewarded Molinero SFC with a 9 for a trot that was cadenced, uphill, had a great deal of suspension and with notable strength in the joints of his hindquarters. The walk, which gained 7.8, has very clear mechanics with good length of stride. Both their preliminary and their final test were superb. Molinero, whose canter was very regular, superbly balanced and had great self-carriage, was outstanding in both tests. Right from the start, the clear favorites were Alba and Molinero SFC that waltzed along the road towards the gold, and succeeded in breaking the absolute record of SICAB, with a score of 84.000 in the final. With 79.300%, Qu de Susaeta, ridden by Guillermo García Ayala, owned and bred by Yeguada de Susaeta, took second place. On the first day of competition, there was a dual between Titans with a face off with Molinero SFC and Qu de Susaeta. There was an minuscule difference of 400 tenths (81.600 compared with 81.200) between first and second place. On the second day, the grey horse, whose trot (8.5) it was very rhythmical, with great mobility through his back, had some problems with the straightness of his counter canter, which unfortunately led to a loss of points. Nevertheless, this pace showed great freedom of his shoulders, very bouncy and above all, it is very uphill. To finish the line-up, Serón, owned and bred by Antonio Morera Vallejo, and ridden by Emilio Ordoñez Redondo, took the bronze. This bay horse demonstrated a trot with a great length of stride, a very well-defined walk, which marked the four-time rhythm perfectly and was very relaxed and calm, and a lovely bouncy canter, with very energetic and active strides. They improved substantially on the second day and performed a great test, as a whole, where he was more stable in the poll, thus improving his contact. With a score of 8.5, the extended walk was one of the highlights of the final test, since the horse used his whole top-line and was totally free from tension. Their accumulated final average was 76.500%. ¡¡

For the second year running, the black pearl of Yeguada Susaeta was proclaimed champion. This year, Poeta de Susaeta, owned and bred by Yeguada Susaeta, ridden by Guillermo García Ayala dazzled spectators in the SICAB arena. This horse was impressive thanks to his three great paces. His canter was very bouncy with great suspension and his superbly active walk showed a lack of tension and length of stride. The strength of his trot was sublime, with great cadence, balance and above all, elegance. The combination moved in unison, once again demonstrating their great potential for the future. This double victory with 79.200 and 81.100, in the preliminary and final respectively, was the icing on the cake after a magnificent 2017 season. The silver medal went to the only mare in this category, Luz SFC, an outstanding mare owned and bred by Yeguada Arroyomente. The audience was almost sold on Invasor CAD for the silver medal, but the tranquillity, serenity and harmony transmitted by Alba Abollo and Luz SFC proved to be one of the key factors in this result. The quality of Luz SFC is very evident, above all in her bouncy canter and her splendid electric trot. With this silver medal (75.500%) this stud farm from Ávila continues to pile up great results. With a difference of several tenths (75.200%) Invasor CAD, owned and bred by Yeguada Mendoza Cadema, placed third in the line-up. On both days he had a very good four-time walk, with great length of stride and lack of tension, thus achieving his best score (7.8) in the preliminary test. With a well-balanced canter, strength and good self-carriage, both the upward and downward transitions were very clean and clear in the various paces. His contact was also very elegant. ¡¡

The proclamation of champions in this category, which introduces lateral work, as well as simple changes, was gripping right up to the last moment. In this category, the test for 6-yearolds, the horse has to demonstrate its propensity for collection. Charlie Brown, owned and bred by Jesus Gómez Cuquerella, was one of this year’s sensations. In Segovia, at the CDI3* held in April 2017, he started to call attention to himself by achieving the highest average at an international competition, with 83.800%. Being one of the top favorites for the gold, both in the preliminary and in the final test (78.800%, 82.600% respectively), he won on both days with élan. Charlie Brown has dream paces, a very elastic and expressive trot that perfectly combines with great balance in the canter and good self-carriage and strength. Exceeding the 80% barrier, his cumulative score was 80.700%, he therefore left the other participants trailing in his wake. The fluctuating positions among the following in the line-up made it clear that the fight for the silver and bronze metals was to be anything but easy. Among those vying for these medals, three great horses were to be found. On one hand, Romero de Trujillo, owned by Yeguada Trujillo and bred by José Franco Sánchez, the great grey horse, who in 2015 was proclaimed World Conformation Champion; on the other hand was Mejorano HGF, owned by Hampton Green Farm, the son of the Olympic horse Grandioso, whose legacy was seen in the quality of his paces, and lastly; Kabul KP, owned by Yeguada La Angostura, a horse whose paces left the audience delighted. In the preliminary test, the son of Grandioso took second place with 77.800%, that is to say, one point less than Charlie Brown. Meanwhile, Romero de Trujillo came right behind, with 76.200%. In the final test, Kabul KP leaped no more and no less than two places, with a score of 77.800%, with a 9.0 for his walk, which was most outstanding. In the end, the gold medal went to Andrea Fontanet riding Charlie Brown. Romero de Trujillo could be found on the second step of the podium, with a cumulative score of 76.600%. Romero de Trujillo is a diamond in the rough, whose competitive career in dressage has just taken off. The combination of elevation with suspension was present in all his paces, but especially in the trot, which has identical bilateral movement, a great rhythm and with no, even insignificant, break of the pace. A mere one hundred tenths separated the silver medal from the bronze. Closing the podium was José Daniel Martin Dockx, riding Mejorano HGF (76.500%). Elasticity of movement perfectly defined the mechanics of this horse. His agility for the three paces came naturally. ¡¡

No rival could be found for José Daniel Martin Dockx with Ataturc DUC in the tests for 7-year-olds. This bay horse, bred by Yeguada Ducal and owned by Hampton Green Farm, performed an impeccable test on the first day of competition. Ataturc DUC achieved the following scores: 8.5 for trot, 7.2 in the walk, 8.0 in the canter, 7.5 for submission and 8.2 for future perspectives, leaving a final score of 74.791%, which led him to victory in the first round line-up. In the second round, the pair amply raised that score (76.415%), which gave them a final average of 75.603%. The picture they painted in the arena demonstrated the great symbiosis between the two. The quality of the paces of Ataturc spoke for itself, a very cadenced trot, a very bouncy canter, amply combined with a clear, regular walk, which lacks tension. Joya SFC, the great flag-bearing mare of Yeguada Arroyomonte, continued to expand her competition successes. Since she started in Dressage, this young mare has stood out in all the categories. Once again, she has demonstrated her value by winning the silver medal with a cumulative total of 73.021%. Over both days of competition, she displayed three great paces: a very electric trot, thus showing a very flexible back; a cadenced, clearly four-time walk with a great length of stride, and an uphill canter. Technically, the two-track exercises were well executed, but as was seen last year at SICAB 2016, this mare still has a few problems in the flying changes (short behind). Duende MB, owned and bred by Antonio Martos Bermúdez and ridden by José Antonio Vázquez Quintero, was awarded the bronze medal in the Ancce Cup for 7-year-olds (72.519%). On the day of first competition, José Antonio García Vázquez took second place, however, he unfortunately fell to seventh on the following day. Despite the slight errors made on the second day, the horse showed a very, rhythmic and cadenced trot, with a great length of stride. The flying changes were very bouncy but in the pirouettes, he needed a little more weight over his hindquarters. ¡¡

Year after year, the level demonstrated in this category improves, and it is one of the favorite tests for the general public. The outcome was more than exciting right up to the end. The tally of averages in the Prix St Georges, jointly with the Kür, dictated the dancing of positions in the final line-up. The splendid champion from Andalusia, José Antonio García Mena riding Valdesol, a horse owned by Yeguada Valdesol and bred by Gonzalo Valenzuela Ruiz, performed a test with very correct work at trot. However, there were a few errors in the canter exercises because of tension in his horse; this lead to a sixth place in the line-up. Fortunately, the rider’s know-how and experience allowed him to shine on the Saturday. Horse and rider danced together to perform a wonderful test with quality in all the exercises. The changes were very bouncy, and light in the forehand; the pirouettes were clearly marked by the beats of the hooves. With beautiful melodic music that was well coupled with the different changes of rhythm, they won the test on Saturday; on Sunday were crowned champions with a cumulative score of 70.029%. At barely one point behind in the overall computation, Alfonso Gormaz, winner of the silver medal, led the line-up after the Prix St Georges, but dropped to fourth place in the Kür. Juncal LXXXVII, owned by Alfonso Gormaz Navarro and bred by José Antonio Olivas Agustí, performed a very electric trot; at times, it was a little rushed in the extensions, but his work on two tracks was beautiful thanks to his great length of stride and the freedom in his shoulders. In the flying changes, he sometimes appeared tense, as his hind legs moved together. To the sound of a Spanish guitar, combined with the famous Game of Thrones sound track, Alfonso was able to correct the errors in the final and gain points through his correct execution of the pirouettes. Technically, the walk performed on both days of the competition was one of the best, since the horse marked a perfect four-time rhythm and used his whole top line. Quincel de Valdesol, the second horse owned by Yeguada Valdesol and bred by Gonzalo Valenzuela Ruiz, completed the podium at this level. Quincel de Valsesol stood out thanks to his elegant trot extensions, as well as for the great length of stride shown in his lateral work and his shoulder-in and half pass. To the rhythm of Spanish guitar chords for his trot work and Celtic melodies for the canter, Quincel was a little unstable in his contact and very long. The counter half-pass both at trot and canter were one of the highlights of the test. His cumulative average was 69.233%. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Dressage

The Grand Prix is the top test in Dressage. It is the fruit of many years of sacrifice and perseverance. It is the result of combined efforts between rider and horse, in which, year after year they become eternally symbiotic. On the last day of competition, Saturday, November 18, Dressage could be seen at its maximum splendor. It is said that this discipline is the equine ballet. Each stride is the unification of passion, submission and know-how between horse and rider, thus creating an inseparable dance pair. A total of eleven riders danced with their partners in this competition arena. This year, the winner of the top Dressage test was Claudio Castilla, riding Ícaro MG, a horse owned by Hierro MG ESP and bred by Yeguada Candau (71.583%). This combination was invincible, thus sealed their leadership with 73.325% in the Kür. On the last central line, this rider from Jerez performed a spectacular medium trot with one hand. When the test came to a close, this Olympic rider was almost annihilated by the effusive ovation from the audience. Interestingly, this same combination achieved the bronze medal last year. Their improvement since last season is enormous. This evolution is seen in the rhythm of the piaffe, which is much more rhythmical. The trot extensions were very beautiful and expressive, but at certain moments, the hind feet continued being a little behind. Second place went to Alejandro Asencio with Dalio IX with a cumulative score of 70.562%. Achieving double second places, both in the GP and the Kür, in their musical intervention, Alejandro presented several exercises with a great deal of technical quality; among these, the extended canter. Linking several exercises together, the technical difficulty of these left the public delirious with their double canter pirouettes with one hand, followed by going down the center line with twotime changes to conclude with another one-handed double pirouette. All the trot-work was exquisite, the exercises flowed to the music’s rhythm. Elegance, subtlety and tranquility are but a few words to describe the half-pass, as well as the extensions in this pace. On the lower step of the podium is the only mare; the explosive Trigueña IX, owned by Alfonso Expósito (69.562%). Trigueña, bred by La Barandilla de Valdecarros and owned by her rider, shone in her own light ahead of all her competitors. On the first day, the mare was very tense which led to several imprecisions in the exercises including rushing. On the other hand, in the musical test, Alfonso and Trigueña danced in the arena, performing a beautiful piaffe and some very bouncy flying changes. The mare was much more relaxed and attentive to her rider’s aids. ¡¡

YEGUADA ARROYOMONTE BEST STUD FARM ancce cup for dressage

t 58

Two years after your success as Best Stud Farm for Dressage, you have once again earned that same award at SICAB 2017. What does this success mean to you? This award recognizes the breeding efforts and the vocation of Yeguada Arroyomonte since it was founded in 1989. Since then, we have always maintained the same breeding objectives with our mares and their offspring.

Our stakes are on continued selection and the search for sire stallions, which, based on our criteria, respond to breeding demands. It would have been an impossible mission without effort and investment. Thanks to the competition, the quality of our horses is seen well beyond stud farm fences with the rest of the world knowing the essence of our efforts.

BEST STUD FARM FOR DRESSAGE

With five horses presented in the various categories, Molinero FS has been, undoubtedly, our star horse as he was the ANCCE Cup Champion among 4-yearolds. What is your opinion of this result? Very encouraging. Since he was born, Molinero FS has always been in our sights and we have great confidence in him, not only for his genetics, but the natural paces that were visible when he was but a foal. However, we had to verify his aptitudes in the arena, which is the moment of truth, and his results were unbeatable. He has all of the ANCCE Cups where he has participated, including CDN and the Young Horse Selection Tests where he earned the consideration as “Excellent.” His results at SICAB are in keeping with this season and proof of this are his scores with 84% at the Final; to date, it is the highest score granted at SICAB. You have bet on mares in Dressage Competitions. Both Luz FS and Joya FS have been proclaimed Reserve Champions in 5 and 7-year-olds respectively. What are your criteria when selecting stallions or mares? Our first PREs were mares that we have ridden, and today, they are the origins of our breeding program. We have always liked to ride our mares for our own delight, and this has allowed us to better understand what we produce. The selection of our horses responds to our own taste and to what extent we enjoy breeding to attain synergy between PRE conformation breed quality and abilities for sports that prove their usefulness and

current fundamental purpose. A horse that is an FS meets with these characteristics and in this order: good heart, natural paces with aptitudes for sports and breed quality. Three of your five horses were on the winner’s podium. How would you summarize the participation of Yeguada Arroyomonte at this 27th edition of SICAB? It has been very positive. The mere fact that five horses qualified is a good result for us. It shows the quality we breed thus making our horses the best ambassadors.

“THANKS TO THE COMPETITIONS, THE QUALITY OF THE HORSES WE BREED HAS GONE WELL BEHONE THE FNECES OF OUR STUD FARM TO SHOW THE ESSENCE OF OUR STUD FARM THROUGHOUT THE WORLD”

What projects are awaiting these Champions and what lines of work will your stud farm be following in the light of 2018? Our objective for 2018 is to obtain maximum performance of our Dressage team, but in terms of breeding and at competition to discover new promises to collaborate with this next season. We always work with a professional team in whom we trust. When it comes to breeding, we will continue along the same lines of work followed at our family stud farm, to progressively improve our breed and reinforce sports among Purebred Spanish Horses on the international scene. ¡ ¡ 59

TEXT: Alfonso Martínez PHOTOS: AZAHARA PÉREZ

Once again, the ANCCE Cup for Doma Vaquera brought that rural, fightingbull environment to SICAB for everyone to enjoy and the personal touch that characterizes those working with bulls. The stands were full, and the audience enjoyed the various participants competing in the categories for Novice and Experienced Riders. The Field Judges for the Experienced Category was chaired by José Manuel Jurado with Inmaculada Robledillo and Javier Alapont at his side and Manuel Baena representing the Federation. Seven horses and riders participated in the categoies, with the following taking their place on the winners’ podium. First place was for Hortelano LXXV, owned by Yeguada Lanzarote and ridden by Pedro Urbina, with a total avverage of 525.167 points. Urbina is an award-winning rider in this sport. It is not surprising that the pair confirmed the title earned last year as the 2016 Champion. This vaquero rider showed the magic of the marshlands of Villamanrique, his hometown coupled with the scent of rosemary from the foothills where the horses from Ganadería Lanzarote graze. Horse and rider gave everything they had to the delight of the audience. Jerónimo Aldara placed second with a total of 523.500 points. This horse was bred by Campa La Selva, owned by Los Lelitos and ridden by Jaime Jiménez. This rider from the village of Viso del Alcor (in the province of Sevilla) proved to be one with his horse; they showed cadence and harmony under the watchful eye of his son, who is the current U-12 Champion of Spain and Andalusia. Third place was for Norte XII, bred by Cortijo Los Leones, owned by La Niña del Marqués and ridden by Olegario Peña, with an average of 519.333. Throughout the 2017 season, this horse participated in the various competitions to qualify for the ANCCE Cup, where he showed his very best. Olegario gave it all, both in the sprints, twists and turns of his legs. There were 13 horses and riders in the Novice Category. The Field Judges included Antonio Vicente Cañadas as the president, backed by Philip Pelhoussine and Juan José García Mora as members-at-large. Once again, Manuel Baena represented the Federation. The top winners are indicated below. First place was for Generoso de Avilés, owned by Francisco Jesús Valle Cordón, bred by Yeguada El Romerito and ridden by Juan Fernando Holgado, earned 386.166 points, with which horse and rider defended their 2016 title. This rider from Villamartín (Huelva) presented a bay that was more than willing to please his riders to perform extremely long and straight back-step transitions. The horse’s walk was frank, proof of which was seen in his fly whisk that moved uniformly and lively in harmony with his steps as is typical in this discipline. 67

Doma Vaquera

Chulito V placed second. This horse is from Ganadería de Miura and ridden by Nicolás de La Hermosilla earned 391.167 points. Horse and rider were refreshing to boast a high-quality walk, that vaquera spark and the straight trot with impulsion. Third place was held by Sorpresa LII, owned by José Franco Sánchez and ridden by Pablo Martín. This horse and rider earned 387.66 points. Although he is very young, the Benjamin of this test showed excellent riding skills. He is proof that younger generations are interested in improving their technical skills and knowledge. He transmitted this know-how to his horse with dynamic changes of pace that were elastic and showed impulsion. ¡¡

First place in Novice, Generoso de Avilés, owned by Francisco Jesús Valle, bred by Yeguada El Romerito.

ANCCE Cup for Carriage Driving

o 70

text: Enrique Morán PHOTOS: AZAHARA PÉREZ

Once again, the best traditional and sports carriages with Purebred Spanish Horses were on hand for SICAB 2017. Thursday, the 16th of November, rolled out the red carpet for CIAT, the International Traditional Carriage Driving Competition, which included the three corresponding tests. First was the remarkable presentation in the main entry plaza at the fairgrounds; it became an imposing parade of carriages boasting maximum perfection, as is customary. This event counts on the support and backing of the Royal Carriage Driving Club of Andalusia (RCEA) and the Association International d’Attelage (AIAT). To the delight of viewers, the second test--Road Drive--commemorated early 20th Century scenes at nearby Infanta Elena Park. This test concluded with two mandatory rounds in the arena of Pavilion 2, where the audience enjoyed a number of historic scenes. The third and last test--cones--was carried out in the outdoor arena. It is noteworthy that in 2017, the ANCCE Cup for Traditional Carriages tallies the scores obtained at SICAB as well as the best scores obtained at CIAT events held in Sevilla and Gines. There were 15 participants at the CIAT held at SICAB, with five singles, five pairs, a tandem, a 5-in-hand and three 4-in-hand. The order of the winners (notwithstanding those with no rivals) were: Singles--Marta Contreras, Manuel González, Ramón Moreno de Los Ríos, Antonio Repullo and José Manuel Borrego; Pairs--José Varo, Juan Andrés Quifes, Pablo Pera, Gregorio Cabeza and Gregorio Aranda Alcántara; Four-in-hand--Llivert Calvet, Gregorio Aranda Lamas and Pedro Perejón. First place in the ANCCE Cup for Traditional Carriages were: Singles--Antonio Repullo del Pino; Pairs--José Varo Garrido; Tandem--Cristóbal Ruíz Meléndez; 5-inhand--Jacint Planas Ros; and 4-in-hand--Gregorio Aranda Lamas. The ANCCE Cup for Carriage Driving is made up of three different tests (Dressage, Marathon and Cones); it was held on Friday the 17th and Sunday the 19th of November, respectively, in the outdoor arena, while the first leg was held at the Infanta Elena Park. There, the distance covered was 5,400 meters with an average speed was 14 km/hour. Also, another, outdoor, 1-kilometer section was awaiting with obstacles. All in all, there were 17 contestants. The classification concluded with the following winners: Maiden Singles--Ignacio Galnares; Singles--Joaquín Rodríguez (first place), José Soltero (second place), Antonio Repullo (third place), José Manuel Borrego, Alfonso Muñoz and Juan Jesús Franco; Pairs--Francisco Ballester (with two carriages, thus placing first and third), Juan José Romero (second place), Emilio José Ávila (third place), José Reina and Pedro Perejón; and 4-in-hand--Llibert Calvet (first place), José Barranco (second place), Gregorio Aranda (third place) and Ignacio Pallares. In both tests, the collaboration on behalf of the Royal Andalusian Carriage Club (RCEA) technicians and staff were essential. Thanks to them, the competitions unfolded perfectly. Both disciplines have a number of followers and enthusiasts, who are faithful to our Purebred Spanish Horses. ¡¡

This ten-year-old bay stallion is owned by Francisca Dos Santos, bred by Yeguada El Diabolo and ridden by Francisco J. Beltrán Blanco from Sevilla. Twelve Purebred Spanish Horses participated in the Open and ten in the categories for Juniors. With the results after the first two days, three horses when clear in the first two rounds, to continue to a jump-off. The Equestrian Show is one of SICAB’s most identifying symbols and a performance that is enjoyed by young and old. Annually, the show summons thousands of horse enthusiasts anxious to see the acrobatics and the various performances staring the best riders in the world. This year’s show, titled This is Our Horse, began by honoring the Civil and National Police Cavalry Squad. It continued with a performance by broodmares--two 12-marecobras from the Military Stud Farm--that were accompanied by their foals. Yeguada de la Cartuja Hierro del Bocado provided a 10-mare cobra. To remember the 1992 World’s Fair--a major event held 25 years ago in Sevilla--the spotlight was on Curro, the event’s mascot. He was alive and well after all these years to the delight of the audience who remembered his antics. Little angles on horseback filled the pavilion with riders from the Al Alba Riding Center in Ciudad Real. As they rode, a video narrated the story of a young child who has surpassed his handicap thanks his close relationship with horses. Ten-time Spanish Champion, Rafael Arcos offered a wonderful Doma Vaquera exhibition. David Chavez from Malaga provided an Interesting performance showing work in hand. Dressage, Spanish High School and Carriage Driving are an important part of the SICAB Show. Such performances delight everyone thanks to the races and challenges that the riders overcome. Lastly, Lorenzo, known by many as the Flying Frenchman, was the protagonist with his star performance. He was surrounded by 16 horses to prove his skills when working with horses in total freedom. The music, narrative, images special effects and presentation were combined perfectly to show the beauty, noble spirit, versatility and potential of the Purebred Spanish Horse. ¡¡
