after the summer vacation period, ANCCE is on the pathway established by the new Board of Directors. Their first three months were dedicated to re-organizing, clarifying objectives and adapting association staffing structures to attain the desired goals. in all truth, they were very INTENSE months, filled with work commission meetings, to seek out the horizons for the next four years of work. regarding SICAB, we have managed to double the number of breeder boxes. This effort responds to the increased demand on behalf of owners and breeders. Likewise, we are working to present changes in the general image of SICAB by equipping it with more modern visuals, which is paramount in this day and age. this new era arises as an invigorating time in which we will provide the content of our election program and face matters of major importance for us all. if we want to be a competitive breed, we have to adjust to the most demanding breeding program models; this is a challenge that we want both the Stud Book Commission and the Breeding Program to be involved in. We are convinced that breed quality is attainable with requirements rather than measuring all horses with the same yardstick. For this very reason, we need to implement quality certifications for our breeding stock; and this is not something that can be delayed over time. conformation competitions must undergo radical changes. It is not a matter of patching things up; for years now, we all coincide in the fact that these competitions just don’t work. With sights set on 2019, we need to create a vibrant alternative and we must proceed bravely, responsibly, but also with determination to recuperate competition credibility while at the same time making them entertaining for breeders. special emphasis is being placed on equestrian training. Our goal is to conclude this term with officially recognized vocational training so that breeders are able to cover their need for specialized employees. For now, we want to offer vocational courses for breeders and presenters. It is my opinion that we all must deepen into the knowledge of our breed. we need to promote new equestrian activities that place our horses in market showcases that differ from what we are currently doing. Along this line, I would like to congratulate Ignacio Candau and all those behind the presence of Purebred Spanish Horses at the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo (Holland) at the beginning of August. Ten PRE Horses, representing three different countries, were selected to compete with the ANCCE team at this prestigious event. Undoubtedly, it is a turning-point in the athletic future of our horses on international circuits.

Record and historic numbers of PRE participants at the World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses For the very first time, a team of 10 horses/riders, all of which were Purebred Spanish Horses, travelled to Ermelo (Holland) to represent the breed. Six horses participated in the official tests for 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds, while another four competed in complementary tests such as the CDI1* for Approved Stallions. The CDI1* is a unique and exceptional opportunity to improve and internationally promote our breed. The 2018 World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses took place at the KNHS-center, Longines, in Ermelo (Holland) during the first week of August. History was made this year, with six PRE horses representing the breed in the official tests for 5, 6 and 7 year-olds, and another four competed in the complementary tests, such as the CDI1* for stallions and the CDI1*. Throughout the entire, nonstop week of competitions, all the PRE horses were closely supervised by team coach and trainer, JĂźrgen Koschel. Under his keen eye, all horses and riders rose to the occasion and were a magnificent representation of the breed.

Sólo de Centurión from Yeguada Centurión, ridden by Lucas Marín, in the test for 5-year-olds.

5 year-olds On Thursday, 2 August, the 5-year olds, the youngest competitors, were the first to set foot in the Longines arena. As stipulated in the rules, they had to demonstrate their correct and elegant dominance of the three paces and correctly perform a series of exercises. Sólo de Centurión was the first PRE to enter the central arena of Ermelo. The son of Fer Bago, ridden by Lucas Marín, performed a very precise test. His rider kept him very straight and superbly relaxed in the walk. With no irregularities or asymmetries, the quality of his trot was correct. His canter, awarded a

7.5, was bouncy, energetic and did not suffer from any incoordination, which led to his final score of 7.34. The second and final competition in which Lucas Marín took part was on Friday, 3 August 3rd, in the Small Final of the World Championships for Young Horses. He improved with his final average, the judges awarded him 7.38, and the regularity of the horse’s trot, the clear 4-time rhythm of his hoof-beats in his walk, and the obedience he showed to the aids of his rider must be highlighted. On the other hand, Molinero FS, owned and bred by Yeguada Arroyomonte, and the 2017 ANCCE Cup for Dressage 4-yearold Champion, at no moment disappointed us. Stride by stride, this combination, Alba Abollo and Molinero FS, moved in perfect unison showing an exemplary symbiosis. On the first day of competition, Alba presented us with a very rhythmic and cadenced trot, which had a good phase of suspension and was very engaged behind. The judges rewarded this quality with an 8.3. Moilnero’s walk, which was awarded an 8.0, showed very clean mechanics while making use of the entire top line. the combination, combined with an overflowing elegance, led to an 8.5 for submission. In the same way, they achieved 7.8 for their canter and 8.4 for future perspective, achieving an accumulated final score of 8.20. Their final test was incredible. With an accumulated final score of 8.22, Alba Abollo beat her personal record with Molinero FS and, more importantly, the highest score to date from a PRE in an international World Championships competition for Young Horses. The quality of the horse and the great savoir faire of Alba Abollo led to them finishing in the best possible way: they were among the top 10 in the Small Final, marking a historic success for the PRE. These select judges highlighted the horse’s contact and his length of stride in the movements. Both in

the preliminary and in the final, Alba achieved a better score than she has on Spanish soil, which denotes her prowess. Her performances were superb, exceeding the 80% barrier, with Molinero shining in his own light on Dutch soil. El The third PRE to participate in this test was Máximo BCN with the rider from Bermuda, Annabelle Collins, at his reins. Máximo BCN, owned and bred by Yeguada Barcelona Horses, has Bohórquez blood running through his veins. This son of the Élite stallion, Utrerano VII, stood out for the quality of his movement. On the first day of competition, he achieved a score of 6.76, with his canter being his highest scoring pace, with 7.4. Maximo BCN presented a clearly balanced uphill canter, well engaged behind, with energetic and active strides. He was very free through the shoulders in trot, with an active rhythm. His walk was correct, but with poor length of stride behind. For submission and future expectations, he was awarded 7.0 and 6.7, respectively. On the final day of the competition, the combination

improved considerably, with their upward and downward transitions being very correct and worth a 6.88. The highlight of this test was their canter (7.5), which was strong and rhythmical. Lastly, the rider from Bermuda was awarded a 5.7 for the walk, 7.2 for trot, 7.1 for submission and 6.9 for future perspective. 6 year-olds The change from 5- to 6-year-olds is enormous; in just one year, riders have to teach their horses a number of new exercises, such as lateral work and simple changes. At this stage, the horse has to show its capacity to settle, in other words, willingness for collection. Poeta de Susaeta was the only PRE representative in the test for 6-yearolds. Taking part for the second consecutive year, the 2017/2016 ANCCE Cup Champion and Silver medal winner at the 2017 Spanish National Championships for Young Horses (CECYL) was more than up to the level of this international event. The black pearl of Yeguada Susaeta, ridden by Guillermo García Ayala, fulfilled all expectations. In the preliminary competition, he was the first to enter the arena. Thanks to the expertise of Guillermo Garcia, which proved to be key, he had no problems of any kind. His test included some lovely moments, such as their second trot half-pass and the walk. With some secure riding and very regular in their paces, the combination achieved an average of 7.28. On the second day, in the Small Final, the trot was the pace that shone the most. Awarded a 7.3, it was very cadenced, well-balanced and, above all, elegant. A minor misunderstanding between horse and rider in one of the changes (anticipated) was the only “but” of this test. With 7.2, Poeta once again demonstrated his potential for the future. 7 year-olds The test for 7-year-olds serves as a launch-pad for the Prix St. Georges. One of the peculiarities of this level is that there is one score for paces and

another for technique. The final score is the sum of the two. Counter canter, semi-pirouettes and series of changes are the exercises present here. Forty-one horses vied for the Gold medal, including two rough diamonds representing the PRE: Romero de Trujillo, the great gray horse who, in 2015 was proclaimed World Conformation Champion, and Mejorano HGF, son of the Olympic horse, Grandioso, whose legacy is reflected in the quality of his paces. Both of these horses are owned by American Stud Farms, Yeguada Trujillo and Hampton Green Farm, respectively. The first to compete was Mejorano HGF, ridden by José Daniel Martin Dockx, a rider who has competed on a multitude of occasions at innumerable International competitions, such as

the Olympic Games and the World Equestrian Games. Nevertheless, this championship was lacking on his professional résumé. In the preliminary test, this horse’s trot was extraordinary, with his length of stride in the lateral work, such as the shoulder-in and the half-pass, standing out. The pick of his canterwork was the changes, which were uphill and bouncy. Finally, his score for paces (70.00) combined with technical ability (66.607) gave him a final score of 68.304. Romero de Trujillo was next. This horse, with beautiful conformation, and outstanding proportions in keeping with breed quality measurements, not only does he

have wonderful conformation, but also stands out for his Dressage. Throughout the whole season, as with Mejorano HGF, his averages have been consistent, always around 70-71. Stride by stride and surpassing the famous 70% barrier, Teia Hernández performed, an excellent preliminary test, achieving 70.464 (72.00 paces/68.929 technical ability). Her presentation of the horse was very elegant and this was reflected by the judges awarding two sevens, one for the walk and the other for trot. One of the highlights of the test was the canter pirouettes, in which he was very well balanced and had great engagement behind. Both Mejorano HGF and Romero de Trujillo bade farewell to Ermelo on Saturday, the 4th August. While in the preliminary test, Romero de Trujillo placed above Mejorano HGF, in the Small Final for 7-year-olds, the positions were reversed. José Daniel Martin Dockx and Mejorano HGF performed a test with no apparent faults; their flying changes were uphill and very springy. They were awarded a final score of 69.141 and the judges commented

on the wonderful rapport between horse and rider. With regards to the test performed by Romero de Trujillo and Teia Hernández (67.582), the trot was lovely and included some exceptional moments, such as the trot extensions. It was absolutely evident that this rider holds the reins of an un-cut diamond, and this is seen in his results for both Conformation and Dressage. prix st georges In 2017, a new category was introduced into the World Championships for Young Horses: Approved Stallions (CDI1*). In 2018, three PRE Horses took part in this test: Juncal LXXXVII, Napoleón Candau and Armas Zelindo. This year, there were ten stallions, registered in the various different stud books that are members of the WBFSH, who fought for the honor of being named Stallion of the Year.

For the first time in PRE history, three Purebred Spanish Horses participated in the test for Approved Stallions (CDI1*) and participated in the lap of honor during the musical test 16

The game was on. Team PRE was to bring us delight. Juncal LXXXVII, owned by his rider, Alfonso Gormaz, and bred by José Antonio Olivas Agustín, was the first horse into the arena. He performed a brilliant test, in which his trot extensions and his pirouettes were outstanding, and led to an average of 69.853% and a welldeserved fifth place in the line-up, which meant he was presented with a well-deserved rosette. The combination with Anthony Pelling and Napoleón Candau, owned by Yeguada Candau and representing Australia, performed a correct test in which the trot extensions were excellent and their flying changes were bouncy and uphill. They were awarded 66.127%. Marc Amat riding Armas Zelindo-owned by José Antonio Varona de la Cuadra and bred by Florencio Moreno Muñoz—performed a flawless test as the last Spanish combination to enter the arena. The trot included some great moments, such as the vaults and the two-track exercises. Their final average was 64.755%.

Juncal LXXXVII, owned by his rider Alfonso Gormaz and bred by José Antonio Olivas Agustín, in the test for Approved Stallions.

On Sunday, the 5th of August, Alfonso Gormaz, Anthony Pelling and Marc Amat danced their final waltz with their partners to bid Ermelo farewell. To the rhythm of drums, the first part of the test performed by Marc Amat was in canter, which allowed Armas Zelindo to shine in his own light. The pair executed a delightful test, whose final score was worth 67.791%, thus placing them in eighth place. Anthony Pelling and Napoleón Candau make a wonderful dance partnership. To the best sound tracks from movie history, the couple performed a test in which the level of difficulty of the exercises was very high. Anthony rode some trot halfpasses that were a delight to watch due to their cadence and length of stride, while Napoleón was excellent in the entire trot section. His final score was 69.250%, which situated him in fifth place, having raised several places since the previous day.

Alfonso Gormaz rode Juncal LXXXVII to complete a beautiful test; both flowed to the rhythm of the music from Game of Thrones. In the trot section, to the chords of a Spanish Guitar, Juncal presented a really electric trot. A more than significant representation of the Purebred Spanish Horse, in which Juncal LXXXVII received an average of 69.583%, placing him first of the Approved Team PRE stallions, to take fourth place in the competition. The icing on the cake with regards to the performance of the PREs at Ermelo was the lap of honor following the musical test. The three horses cantered around the central arena with great pride and satisfaction. Lastly, the performance of José Daniel Martin Dockx riding Ataturc DUC, owned by Hampton Green Farm and bred by Yeguada Ducal, in the CDI1* has to be mentioned. This chestnut horse remained really consistent over the two days of competition. Both his Prix St Georges and Intermediaire I were really clean and the rider’s precision when carrying out each exercise was notable. 67.010% and 66.814% were their respective averages.

Ermelo, as the American expression states, is “the place to be” for breeders. It is the world epicenter that magnetically attracts lovers of the various horse breeds. The battle between horses for the title as World Champion 5, 6 and 7 year-old is titanic. Another very successful event concluded with Ermelo where the highest number of PRE participants to date was on hand for the very first time. The venue became a Purebred Spanish Horse promotional stand in the exhibition area of the multi-breed stud books. Emotions and excitement ran high, with nerves and delight, but, above all, passion, sportsmanship and dedication to promote Purebred Spanish Horses outside the borders of Spain. Molinero FS, Solano de Centurión, Máximo BCN, Poeta de Susaeta, Mejorano HGF, Romero de Trujillo, Juncal LXXXVII, Armas Zelindo, Napoléon Candau and Ataturc DUC were selected to represent Spain’s only native equine breed. Day after day, the breed increases its strength and relevance in international dressage arenas. ¡¡

it all began in 1994. At the age of 18, Francisco Dorantes founded the Guarnicionería Dorantes (Saddle and Harness Makers), but it all began years before when his passion for horses ran wild through his veins as a child. That same passion increased thanks to a rather unconventional craftsman from Sevilla named Francisco de Vicente, who shared stories that had him dreaming, while at the same time, teaching him the trade. “He told me about his adventures with (bullfighter) Curro Romero for whom he had done some work. I don’t know how much truth was in it, but it got me excited.” a dream come true At 16, he began studying saddlery at El Cortijo del Cuarto (Sevilla), where he met Francisco López, an artisan who made—and continues to make— quality, custom-made footwear. He learned a lot from him, but also French craftsmen who instilled “fine work and a perfect finish.” “That is the birth of an apprentice,” he explains, “learning from a master craftsman and then from another and another…” Books have also been his guide; he invested countless hours reading page after page to learn the trade. By 18, he was working hard in the countryside to be able to purchase a copy of Manual del Sillero y el Guarnicionero (Saddle Making and Saddlery Manual) by Rodríguez & Zurdo. This book was edited in 1861 and provides all of the necessary know-how about equestrianism and the art of correcting dressing horses. The author was a saddle and harness maker for the Royal Stables in 1856 and manufactured the carriage for Isabella II—a reproduction was made by Dorantes’ workshop for King Juan

Carlos of Spain. Today, there are more than 400 books in his personal library, but his shelves also house other treasures such as the many books used to document their work. With a passion tanned by wisdom, hard work and enthusiasm, Francisco Dorantes created his own workshop in 1994. He holds loving memories of his first work: a typical Andalusian style set of chaps. “I no longer have them because I had to sell them to continue working. I know their whereabouts, but I’ve not yet been able to recuperate them. I’d love to have them.” As a hardcore perfectionist, Francisco Dorantes always seeks the height of luxury. At the age of 24, he became one of the best saddle and harness makers in the world, or the very best as many of his satisfied customers have stated. Proof is that at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, held in 2016, which coincided with the birthday of Queen Elisabeth II of England, his stand was located between Louis Vuitton and Hermès. ROYAL HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIER In 2015, Dorantes’ Saddle and Harness Shop earned the National Artisan Award; however, ten years before, he had already received a call from Spain’s Royal Stables to commission an item for King Juan Carlos. Initially, Dorantes thought it was a joke, but it wasn’t. Finally, his workshop made a harness for eight horses, which was a duplicate—except for the coat of arms—of one owned by Isabella II of Spain. He did it all thanks to the help of his own unique “Bible” in the form of a manual by Rodríquez & Zurdo. a family business Francisco Dorantes Caro was the founder, but he then drew in his fiancée—now his wife—Casti into the “craziness” of the business. “I promised her that one day we would work for the Royal Household…and look, that is exactly what happened,” he laughs. His three sisters stepped in as well as his nephew Marcos— his business partner and right hand man—in addition to several cousins.

report Staffing includes several other people with no family ties, but they too are beloved members of the large saddle and harness making family. Fifteen people work together in an idyllic setting. “For me, the human team is the most important asset and that they work with passion because if that weren’t the case, the results would be nice, but there would be no spirit. I love talking with my people, listening to them and motivating them. The human factor is essential and the work environment fundamental. The day that spirit disappears, nothing will mean anything, even if the actual business continues over time.” ATtention to details Fate is not on the payroll at this exclusive workshop where each piece is worked with delicate care and detailed attention. “Everything is thought-out to fulfill each task perfectly to attain the finest enhancement while at the same time making the guide as easy as possible.”Communication between artisan and client needs to be fluid and flowing to obtain a personalized design with the exact measurements, including specifics about the position of the hands or emblems.”

24

The simplicity of the forms, the depth of the colors used and the countless details, with five stitches per centimeter, the relief of the contours, the simple fittings... there are so many fine points that stand out that even laymen are surprised. “The design is simple and easy-going, where black is not a simple black, because hides are dyed by hand.” Only the finest quality raw materials are used. National products are preferred, and so leather from Villaramiel del Campo (Palencia) is a choice material. However, certain projects require other types of leather; in that case, products reach out to France, Ireland and even America for supplies. Leather always comes from free-range animals and must be accompanied by the corresponding certificate stating that the young bulls have been raised naturally. That is something that is visible not only on the leather but also in the actual craftsmanship. Vegan leathers are used, which receive their natural color and are dyed by hand. “Vegan leather is much more delicate, but it ages better to become permeated with the life of

Its beauty increases with each day you clean it.” century-old techniques Dorantes saddlery and harness workshop has recuperated the magnificence of 18th and 19th century Spanish craftsmanship, when they were recognized as the best in the world. Before Francisco Dorantes founded his workshop, Spain “worked pure and simple saddlery.” He has recuperated age-old techniques to include other trades that were linked to this same sector during its golden age. Today, there is a silversmith, an

upholsterer who is responsible for carriage upholstery, a smelter who creates the buckles, a saddler, and a leather smith who adds that elegant touch to the work, in addition to two historians, a graduate in Fine Arts and a graphic designer, who provides the most modern aspects to the artisans making up the team. With their knowledge, they perpetuate traditional saddlery without leaving anything to fate and dignify the profession and Andalusian craftspeople. CREATION & RESToration Not only does the workshop create items—from exhibition saddlery to elegant equestrian accessories—but they also restore equipment. As for Francisco Dorantes, it is easy to take sides for one or another. “If you manufacture something, you are creating it with your own hands; your mind has the freedom to do something different, and as a craftsman, it keeps you alive and motivated. At the same time, you must not miss an opportunity that life gives you to do something different.”

Nevertheless, restoration has its charms. “Imagine arriving at a farm, and you find an item that has been around for eighty to a hundred years, because it has been passed on from one generation to another and nobody has bothered to fix it. When you see it, it is ruined and it is you who gives it new life. That motivates you just the same. You are the one that recuperates its original look. It is really satisfying because it honors the craft worker who made it and the person who enjoyed life with that item. We must safeguard history because if our history is lost, we have lost everything.” Since childhood, he was taken up by old saddles and harnesses and he had his own saddles and bridles. At the age of 15, Francisco Dorantes realized that equestrian equipment with a past, with history and soul was being abandoned so he began to urge his customers to restore them, and give them a second lease on life before purchasing something new. The net worth of these items was unknown as they were old, but he launched a crusade and began going to auctions in Holland, Italy and the United Sates to further his own collection. Since then he restores objects for daily use and for museums. The restoration process must be very systematic; it is one that demands documentation. It usually takes between 1,500 and 1,800 hours to finish an article. First, there is the initial study of the item to know where it comes from, in addition to a full analysis with samples being sent to a museum in Barcelona to analyze the process used to tan the hide. All of the details about the manufacturing process are studied to then review the materials used. Once all of the information is collected, a 60 to 70 page intervention project is drafted that describes all of the actions to be carried out, after which, it goes to the workshop. When the item is fully restored, it is turned over to the owner together with written documentation, including drawings that detail the diagnosis, the various actions taken and all relevant information.

There are a number of historic gems that have been to this prestigious workshop, but one of Francisco Dorantes’ favorites is the latest: the complete restoration of an 1852 Million & Guiet carriage and the original harness. “It has been amazing, because we have completely restored it: leather, paint, upholstery, woodwork…” Guarnicionería Dorantes only works to order, and has a waiting list until 2020. Its harnesses—as of 8,250 euros—are in demand. Nevertheless, they also make accessories such as tool satchels, wicker umbrella stands, etc. In the future, the idea of diversification to include more items is on the table. ¡¡

“restoring something is SATISFying because it honors the craftsmen who made it and the person who enjoyed life with that item. we must safeguard history because if our history is lost, we have lost everything” 27

Without a doubt, my best experience and sensation with a PRE is when I enjoy its personality and its talent for piaffe and passage. In addition to being a rider, trainer, President of the KWPN Sire Selection Commission and member 30

of the young KWPN horse selection team for the World Championship, you are also a breeder. To what part of morphology do you give greater importance? Personally, the correctness of leg conformation is the most important, because this enhances the change of a long-lasting career in sports, in good health and soundness. Secondly, of course, I value good movements, elasticity and agility. Last but not least, presence is essential. It allows full appreciation of the breed’s grandeur. During this year’s World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horse, for the first time ever, Spain has had 100% representation by PRE horses. What is your opinion

interview to improve is by participating in competitions with other breeds as it allows them to compare their horses with others. Recently, the Royal Dutch Sport Horse Breeders’ Association (KWPN) agreed to register foals by KWPN stallions, out of PRE mares registered in the PRE Studbook. Would you consider that the Dutch have recognized the virtues of our breed and incorporate them into theirs? Would you consider this has a positive effect on the Purebred Spanish horse? This is actually a five-year pilot program through which we expect to obtain information on how it works. Undoubtedly, we have recognized the virtues of the PRE and we wanted to combine the best of both breeds to obtain a horse that has the best traits. Only time will tell. However, I believe that sharing knowledge from different studbooks is always beneficial. Thanks to your experience and ties to the PRE horse, what aspects do you believe need urgent improvement in terms of the breeding and training of Spanish horses? Independently of the breed, to have a healthy and successful career in sports, good conformation, good movements for three quality paces and endless eagerness and enthusiasm are a must.

to have a successful career in sports, horses need to have good conformation, good movements for all three paces and willingness to work on ANCCE’s wager to create the PRE Team under German coach Jürgen Koschel’s training? I think it is really is fantastic that Spain chose only PRE horses for its team. I was there, and I can assure you that their performance was very satisfying. The best way for a breeder 32

What advice would you give breeders and PRE owners devoted to breeding and/or sports? I’m convinced, and it’s a fact, that it is possible to breed Purebred Spanish Horses for sports and, more specifically, for top level competition in international scenarios without losing the essence of the Spanish horse. That is why it is important not to limit the selection of stallions based on “ridability;” in other words, a comfortable seat, or easy riding. To obtain better results and faster, mares should also be selected for their “ridability,” that is to say, for their ability to carry the rider and at a young age. ¡¡

steps are being taken to place spain’s equestrian academic training on the same level as the rest of europe ANCCE seeks to formalize equestrian activities with vocational training certifications to enhance these trades TEXT: Elena R. Vázquez PhOTOs: RMR-Juan Jesús Pan / Azahara Pérez

Professional calling is a key element for personal success. We spend at least one third of our day at work; needless to say, it is important to have a job that makes us happy. Some professions require greater dedication and devotion, such as those related to the equestrian sector. Perfect harmony between horse and man/woman key and to achieve this, complete dedication is a must. Vocation is the seed to become a successful professional in this sector. However, knowledge and skills are essential, whether these be inborn or acquired. The equestrian sector embraces a vast industry in need of professionals

for its development. Spain is a country of horse enthusiasts, in addition to the fact that is has its own unique breed—the Purebred Spanish Horse. In many other countries however, horses are man’s best friend; this is translated into absolute dedication and commitment to offer horses very best so that they are outstanding, whether in breeding or sports. In this regard, the new National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association (ANCCE) Board of Directors seeks to develop officially recognized training for equestrianrelated professions in Spain. There are magnificent professionals, many of whom are self-taught or have learnt 35

report through family tradition. Despite this, they have no official certification that backs up their knowledge and therefore, job offers are limited. José Juan Morales, President of ANCCE, acknowledges the first steps to consolidate this project: “Our objective is to increase the range of certifications and degrees within the equestrian sector so those interested are not forced go abroad in search of training.” In other countries such as Great Britain, The Netherlands, Germany, France and the US, there is a wide range of educational possibilities in these disciplines; in this sense, they have a jumpstart over us. Upon graduating from high school, students often continue their studies at universities that offer certifications and training in the equestrian sector. This educational system guarantees well-trained professionals while furthering research in the sector. For example, the Royal Agricultural University in Great Britain offers a degree in equestrian sciences. This institution is the oldest university with agricultural studies in the Anglo-Saxon world. Its employment rate of 97.5%; this campus is located in Cirencester (150 km from London) and recruits 1,200 students from 45 different countries. The three-year degree focuses on both the study of equestrian sciences and entrepreneurship in the sector, with courses ranging from genetics to business models. France is yet another country that boasts an important equestrian tradition. The Institut Français du Cheval et de l´équitation (French Institute of Horse and Equitation) is one of the most prestigious in the field of equestrian disciplines. The Institute not only guarantees practical learning at official riding schools in the area, but also coordinates aid for breeders, riders and teaching of professionals in the sector with academic certifications for farriers, grooms, instructors and riders among other trades that have been incorporated into a thriving national and international labor market. The Institut Français 36

du Cheval et de l´équitation offers degrees ranging from 4-years courses to short courses of just a few months. For example, the bachelor’s degree and Professional Training prepares professionals as teachers in addition to managing positions in the equestrian sector. There are four courses at the Institute’s facilities as well as at university and equestrian schools. The yearly tuition is 7,400 euros, but this also includes room and board for your horse. There are also courses designed to train teachers that are just one year and contain a well-rounded theoretical and practical curriculum. Last year, Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports launched a new Intermediate Vocational Training certification for the equestrian world: Technician in Equestrian Activities. Even though the importance of equestrian arts seems to be on the increase in Spain’s economy, it is crucial for “institutions such as ANCCE to ensure accredited certifications provided with quality curricula that train successful professionals and therefore, become more competitive,” states José Juan Morales. Currently, certification and degree possibilities are quite limited, especially in the region of Andalusia where those trained in such disciplines enroll in the Real Escuela Andaluza de Arte Ecuestre (Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art) or in the Real Maestranza Caballería de Ronda (Royal Order of Chivalry in Ronda), although there are some riding clubs that offer courses. The Royal Order of Chivalry in Ronda is the oldest and most prestigious in Spain. Its origins date back to 1573, two years after the Spanish Riding School of Vienna was founded. Currently, both official and private certifications are available. In terms of official certifications; students may seek either a Certificate or a Diploma in Equestrianism. Likewise, as of last year, the institution is certified to issue the official diploma as Technician in Equestrian Activities and in two other professional fields:

The most soughtafter professions, both in Spain and abroad, are riders and presenters, which is an added value that ANCCE seeks.

The objective of ancce is to increase the range of certifications and degrees for those interested in the EQUESTRIAN sector, so the need not leave spain

Certificate in basic Horse Training, and Riding Route Guide. These courses have been included in the National Professional Qualifications Catalog and are endorsed by the Regional Ministry of Education. The Royal Riding School offers its own unique 2-year-long courses to train riding instructors as well as a one-year course for riding trainer. Furthermore, they also offer a recreational sports course for young people between 9 and 16 years of age. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez de la Frontera has also trained well known riders. This center offers a program for specialists in Equitation and Carriage Driving along with saddlery, stable hand and veterinarian assistant. Although the educational quality is

excellent, registration is limited. As an example, during the 2018/2019 academic year only three places were announced for the Carriage Driving course; two were accepted for the two-year program and one for the three-year program. Final entry requirements are based on the average of the marks obtained in the theoretical and practical exercises, considering that the former counts for 30% of the mark and 70% for the latter. Something similar occurs with the Equitation Course that offers just six places for its 4-year program. The Andalusian School also offers courses aimed at specialists seeking to improve their techniques; such courses are taught by experts and are for both professionals and aficionados. 37

PROFESSIONALS needed When it comes to the world of horses, no matter what aspect, there is a need for well-trained and prepared professionals. The demand for said professionals comes from livestock farming, facilities and equestrian centers that seek to employ highly qualified personnel. More specifically, the greatest need and demand comes from stud farms dedicated to the last phase of breeding, caring and maintenance of horses for recreational activities. In this work environment, the level of competencies and capacities of technicians has increased not only from a professional point of view, such as breeding, dressage or farriers, but also at a personal and social level since there is more and more requirements for team work, problem solving, risk prevention, environmental safety and animal welfare. The most soughtafter professions, both in Spain and abroad, are riders and presenters; this is ANCCE’s main objective without excluding other certifications. Juan Heredia, director of the 38

Royal Order of Chivalry Riding School in Ronda, is of the opinion that “in Spain, there are a number of certifications that could meet the requirements of any professional dedicated to the world of equitation.” However, he insists on “the main problem is the lack of resources invested in training.” In this sense, the Order in Ronda offers an annual Rider-Instructor course with a capacity for six students the first year; the scholarship is automatically renewed the second year if and when the performance and achievements are proven to be satisfactory. Every year, five students finish the first year and four finish the second of the Rider-Instructor course. In the Riding-Trainer Course, there are usually one to two students enrolled while for the rest of the various equestrian-related Sports Technician Courses, the number of students rises to some 25. The Recreational Sports Course is given during school hours and the number of students enrolled is limited to

15 per academic year. The study program at this School is undoubtedly an example to be followed and implemented by other institutions. Nevertheless, “we must insist on the need for greater resources, provide a larger number of possible enrollments,” as the president of ANCCE pointed out. This ANCCE backed project is quite ambitious and would involve both the public and private sectors. The Andalusian Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development have been informed about how the project is being carried out. Meetings are foreseen with the Regional Governments of Extremadura and Murcia together with the Institut Français du Cheval et de l´équitation to acquire deeper knowledge of their curriculum to be used as a model. The idea is to offer intermediate and advanced vocational training certificates and even, in the near future, university degrees. “The objective is to train professionals and generate employment in a sector that represents a half of a point on Spain’s GDP,” informed the president of ANCCE and insisted on the fact 40

that “these certifications would generate enough professionals for the development of the sector.” After the first institutional contact, the next step is to design the academic syllabuses and position them in strategic locations so that students have easy-access to this information. This vital proposal to develop an equestrian-related industry will generate jobs and wealth in areas where such activities are a tradition. Without a doubt, it will help a vocation become professional. ¡¡

JESÚS CONTRERAS President of the Royal Andalusian Carriage Club (RCEA) By ACCLAMATION and with the support of his management, Jesús Contreras was re-ELECTED PRESIDENT of the Royal Andalusian Carriage Club this past 13th of June. After leading this institution for the past 16 years, he has managed to consolidate the “World CArriage Driving Capital of the World” project in Sevilla, with exhibition events aT the Real Maestranza de Caballería bullring as the main axis. likewise, he has consolidated a number of international circuits, with competitions in Lisbon, Italy, France and Spain, in addition to the calesera (andalusian) harness congress. as a member of one of the traditional entrepreneur families in SEvilla and andalusia, he is a partner of the azvi group, a carriage driving enthusiast, and has one of the best carriage collections in spain.

TEXT: INMACULADA RODRÍGUEZ PHotos: Lince Photo Agency

Are you satisfied with having been re-elected as the President of the Royal Carriage Club of Andalusia? Yes, very happy to once again count on the backing of my Board of Directors. I greatly appreciate the continual collaboration, in addition to their loyalty and their capacity for service towards our Club. Of course, I am happy to count on the

main RCEA nucleus and its members, which is the real purpose of our Club. Your 16 years of RCEA leadership has translated in years of advances, promotion and achievements. After your re-election, what are the main lines of action for the next four years? For next year, our priority objective 43

entrevista annually dedicate them to another country with historic and cultural ties with Spain. Russia, Mexico and Colombia have been but some of the guest countries in recent years. Thus, we want to pay special attention to members, with them being evermore involved in the Club by improving and establishing better lines of communication.

“our main success is the RECUPERATION and maintenance of HISTORIC carriage driving heritage and culture” is for the Carriage Driving Exhibition in Sevilla to be declared a Tourist Event of Interest for greater outreach and interest in this unrivaled performance. For this reason, we are holding meetings with the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Sports. We would also like to continue public-private collaboration to consolidate and promote carriage driving as traditional knowledge and cultural heritage. Equally important is to establish our international importance with the participation and organization of competitions and meetings throughout Europe and America, invite international judges to competitions held in Spain and 44

When the Club was launched 34 years ago, it was all excitement and today, it is all reality. To date, what has been the greatest achievement/s attained? of Our main success—and one to which we have dedicated major efforts—is the recuperation and maintenance of historic carriage driving heritage and culture so that it reaches out to everyone. That is why for us, it has been essential to consolidate projects in Seville, the World Carriage Driving Capital, thanks to its projection both in Spain and abroad through carriage driving exhibitions and CIAT as the main assets. Likewise, we continue working in other points of Andalusia, such as Ronda, with a well-consolidated competition that has recently held its 42nd edition, which was a major success in terms of participants and enthusiasts. For the very first time, it was broadcast by Canal Sur TV, with 4K technology—visible in the high-quality images thanks to the share index was very high. Moreover, we have celebrated events linked to carriage driving in other Andalusian towns such as Gines and Villamanrique. Another noteworthy event was our twinning with the city of Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), where we have held the second leg of the Calesera (Andalusian Style) Harness Congress, at the Foundation of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. Similarly, we have collaborated at a number of events as part of the initiative to make Jerez the 2018 European Horse City. Are there any new projects on the carriage driving horizon? Yes, continue promoting all types of

activities, especially those focusing on young people so that the carriage driving culture is passed on to future generations thanks to their involvement. The greatest successes achieved by the Spanish Carriage Driving Team have been with PRE Horses. What plans do you have in terms of international competitions? The idea is to continue promoting the best type of horse for traditional carriage driving, and that is the PRE, by means of competitions, especially international events. The participation of Spanish Horses, with the intelligence and harmony, guided by riders from abroad has reached 25%, followed by Lipizzaner and the Polish Draft Horse, the participation of which is 4%. Approximately 90% of the horses presented at traditional carriage driving competitions are PREs and we are sure to see an increase in their participation in

carriage driving events. PRE horses are kind animals, and easy to handle, which makes things easier right from the beginning; at the same time, they can boast about having stable emotions. This, in turn, is an advantage in terms of the amount of time and efforts invested. Even if you demand too much, a Spanish Horse will give you everything he has. How can breeders and enthusiasts begin in the world of carriage driving? Through continued advice from Club professionals.

45

entrevista about anything and everything linked to the world of carriage driving. The more than 500 members of our Royal Club have access to preferential use of the corporate venue and receive our magazine titled El Enganche, where they have information about our activities. Over the years, what has the role of the Carriage Museum played? The Museum plays an essential role as the headquarters of the Royal Andalusian Carriage Driving Club. It has also become the nucleus for the promotion and dissemination of carriage driving; thanks to its strategic location, it is an important venue for corporate events. It is a meeting place for the equestrian world, a museum that is open to the public, where, among other aspects, may view a permanent exhibition with a wide range of carriages and coaches.

“our relationship with ancce is excellent; we have been continually cooperating for many years for the benefit of PRE and carriage driving culture” What are the advantages of being a member of the Club you preside? Currently, how many members are there? One of the advantages is the opportunity to participate in unique events, both national and international, such as competitions and exhibitions, as establishing institutional ties with other bodies and clubs from the equestrian world the world over. Moreover, our training and information offer by means of courses, congresses and discussions facilitates learning 46

What is the relationship between RCEA and ANCCE? It is excellent; we have been cooperating together for many years now, taking advantage of the synergies between both institutions, which benefits both the PRE horse and carriage culture. Then there are the ties we have in training and educational aspects, including international and carriage driving events held during SICAB, the presentation of this international event at our Carriage Museum in Sevilla, and mutual cooperation granting awards at the various competitions and activities organized throughout the year. I would not like to conclude this interview without stating on my own behalf and that of the RCEA Board of Directors, the welldeserved appointment of José Juan Morales Fernández as the President of ANCCE. I am well-aware of the values he holds, and undoubtedly, this will translate in the best possible decisions being made to defend the PRE as a breed and the institution he presides. ¡¡

Para-equestrian Dressage is an excellent tool for integration. Horses don’t understand disabilities; thus, their riders have to demonstrate their expertise under equal conditions. Although there is still a long path ahead, w h e n c o m p a r e d with Adapted Dressage in other countries, Spain is a country where there are more Para-equestrian competitions and riders. There are more, for example, than in high-level countries, such as France—although, admittedly, the first French Team boasts a higher level than the Spaniards. This situation is due to Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation policies: promoting the creation of grassroots, which involves training and promotion of the discipline, so that in the near future, the focus is placed on the technical level. Remember that Europe is the cradle of Dressage; in recent years, Paraequestrian Dressage has undergone a huge upsurge in terms of both participants and competitions. Grand Prix horses or horses on loan for well-known riders are seen at the majority of these competitions. Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation is currently concentrating on a training and support plan for technical advances. For example, each meeting for technical plans reserves two places for Paraequestrian Dressage riders and they are given technical qualifications that are equivalent to all the other participants. Likewise, the Federation holds annual workshops for Spanish riders to provide them with a more international type of training, as FEI coordinator David Hamer is involved, the same as is British rider, Sophie Wells—who won two Paralympic Golds and two silvers at the 2016 Río de Janeiro and London 2012 Games. Riders taking part in these workshops are normally divided into three groups: base, development and performance. These workshops focus on development and performance groups, with the aim of improving their level. Fátima Cao, the person in charge of the Federation’s Paralympic Horsemanship, member of the Spanish Paralympic Executive Committee, doctor in physical therapy and Disability Classifier for Equestrian Sport, assured us that

Jesús Silva (Grade V) with Valioso X, owned by Yeguada de la Cartuja-Hierro del Bocado.

“the objective, internationally, is to field a good team for next year’s European Championships. In the long term, the intention is to take a team to the World Equestrian Games and then, to the Paralympics. Our aim, in the short term, is to achieve greater presence at international competitions and have a more structured team that will raise the level and improve scores. Of course, grassroots will not be forsaken, as we really want to encourage more reach and continue to increase the number of riders. The IN Association must be thanked for their support in Developing Adapted Sport, as well as ANCCE for organizing exhibitions, such as the one at SICAB. It would be great progress were we to manage to put together a more official format.” greater visibility To achieve these objectives, Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation has created a project for the Development of National Sports Structures: Paraequestrian Dressage, authorized by the FEI, which also receives support from the FEI Solidarity Program. Since 2011, the objective of this program has been to supply National Federations with the necessary tools to develop equestrian sports in their own countries in a sustainable, structured, progressive and professional way. This help comes in the form of technical or financial assistance, or by means of consultancy services. In this specific case, aid involves technical assistance; thus, the FEI has provided Patricia Nadoux, technician and judge, consultant for the FEI since 2016, as the person in charge of the Para-equestrian Dressage projects in El Salvador, Iran and Slovenia, to assist us. “The objective,” explains Nadoux, “is to make this discipline visible and enable disabled riders to participate on a regular basis, so that, further ahead, they will be able to access international competitions. The success of this project lies in the investment made by national federations, trainers, riders and their teams. It is extremely important

that they all be on the same page. Everyone involved has to invest as much as possible.” The first gathering for the Development of National Sports Structures: Para-equestrian Dressage came to a close in July; it was held in three venues in Spain: Asturias, Navarra and Catalonia. This Project was well-received despite the fact that events were held in northern Spain only—which are the areas where the highest number of riders in this discipline. The event was well-attended by riders and trainers; the scores recorded on the satisfaction questionnaire surpassed, in general, 8.5. Due to

HORSEs DON’T UNDERSTAND DISABILITIES, WHICH IS BOTH something POSITIVE AND A NEGATIVE WHEN IT COMES TO TAKING PART IN THIS PARA-EQUESTRIAN DISCIPLINE. DUE TO THIS, RIDERS ARE VERY BRAVE to have decided TO participate IN THIS SPORT

its success, such workshop has been requested for other geographic areas; consequently, an increase in venues is planned, throughout the rest of Spain. Fátima Cao stated that “Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation wants to subsidize such projects so that training by professionals is completely free of charge for riders, thus offering all the support possible, which they will no doubt appreciate.” On the other hand, she also stated that “we need to have greater respect and prestige for this discipline; little by little, this goal is being reached, but, just a few years ago, people felt sorry for these riders and treated them with paternalism; they were never considered true athletes. We must actively remember that they are athletes; they are well-aware of this and want to be judged as such. It is interesting that internationally, para-equestrian 55

dressage Dressage is a really prestigious discipline and to the extent that riders with minor injuries apply to be able to compete in it. At present, in Spain, at the national level, it is not considered as prestigious as it is internationally. what is para-equestrian dressage? Horsed do not understand disabilities, which is something both positive and negative when it comes to taking part in para-equestrian disciplines. Due to this reason, riders are very brave to have decided to practice this sport, whether in the competition arena or simply for pleasure. A para-equestrian rider is a clear example of work, perseverance and achievement. It is not enough to say that to practice this discipline, one needs a well-balanced horse; on many occasions, it is the actual equipment that has to be adapted: saddle, reins, stirrups, etc. This discipline is highly complex and it is a real challenge for those taking part. Once the compensating aids have been adapted to the rider, they are no longer disabled; rather, the rider is perfectly conditioned. If this discipline is characterized by anything, it is team-work, family members and trainers that turn themselves inside out to support these riders, who, in addition, never fail to demonstrate their sportsmanship and friendliness in the arenas. Words are unnecessary, all one needs to do is attend a competitions to latch onto the atmosphere. Once a rider completes his/her test, it is impossible not to feel pride and admiration: paraequestrian dressage is a discipline that brings people together. Para-equestrian Dressage has been a Paralympic discipline since 1996. In Spain, following the FEI model, Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation integrated it another discipline in 2009. In recent years, this discipline has been gaining popularity in Spain with participation in national competitions increasing. 56

Alejandro Espejo (Grade VI) riding Operario VI, owned by its rider and bred by Santiago Illán Fernández.

Today, there are more and more centers and organizing committees that make it possible for the competition calendar to be increasingly filled. Spain now has a team that takes part in international competitions; that must continue to progress to be able to participate in future World Equestrian Games and Paralympics. The intention is to propose this discipline to a greater number of riders so that they are able to participate under good conditions and in a safe way. At a later date, they will be able to move on, should they so desire, into the competition arena. getting started with paraequestrian drressage Firstly, a rider wishing to start in this equestrian discipline should contact the Royal Federation to program the disability classification for competition. This is an assessment performed by a specialized doctor or physiotherapist, where the degree of disability is calculated, together with the impact it has on the specific sport. Based on this assessment, riders are awarded a profile and placed in a grade or category for competitions. All the Paralympic disciplines, the same as equestrianism, have five internationally recognized grades, although in Spain, the riders are divided into six: Grade I, Grade II, Grade III, Grade IV, Grade V and Grade VI, each one with its own tests. Grade I is for those riders with the most severe disabilities and, at the opposite end, that is to say, V, are those with lesser disabilities. Lastly, those riders with intellectual disabilities are assigned to Grade VI. It is extremely important that these assessments be made prior to participation; knowing the level of difficulty of the various tests in advance and the level needed to be able to ride them suitably is essential. However, riders need not start competing at a specific level; rather, they can start off in what are known as Open Tests. They start

at the lowest grades, even though these are not necessarily where they belong. Later, as they become inspired to compete in regional competitions, they gain confidence to move on to national events. Normally, many Dressage competitions fail to mention that there are para-equestrian tests. Nevertheless, any rider wishing to take part is free to contact the organizing committee or their federation to ask for such a test and be included. Inclusion in the competition arenas Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation has been promoting the inclusion of para-equestrian dressage tests at

The project to develop national sports structures seeks to develop adapted dressage in a sustainable, structured, progressive and professional manner

no additional cost for the organizing committees. The only requirement is that they must ensure and comply with all minimum safety measures and that they must be considerate to the participants, ensuring that their tests are not at really busy times or in an arena where the horse could become too distracted. No additional costs will be incurred materially, as the facilities for para-equestrian dressage are the same as those required for standard Dressage. The only exception is that in the lowest grades I, II and III the arena size needs to be reduced to 20x40, which only takes a couple of minutes during the competition. Fátima Cao highlights that the Para-equestrian philosophy “is to fight for inclusion and equality in competition.” “Firstly”, she explains, “this is a social, competitive and empathetic task, so that the riders have an opportunity to compete the 57

same as any other athlete and with equal opportunities.” The only obligation on behalf of the Federation is that at least one of the three judges, whether at national or regional competitions, must be Para-equestrian. For this reason, the federation has also invested greatly in the training judges throughout Spain so that there are no problems finding a judge in the area. These days, there are many judges with a dual training; there are 23 national judges and an even larger number at regional events. Thanks to this effort, the Supreme Dressage Championships of Spain has also incorporated Para-equestrian Dressage in the past five year. This year, the Paraequestrian Championships of Spain has celebrated its 9th anniversary with more participants than ever, who are achieving averages of around 70%. Similarly, the number of riders registered with the Federation has increased constantly since the discipline started in 2009. women and sports The Development of National Sports Structures: Para-equestrian Dressage has been supported by the

58

Department for Women and Sports at the Sports Council (Consejo Superior de Deportes). This department was created to support and promote the participation of women in sports, not only as competitors, but also in organizational positions, as judges, etc. Sadly, the statistics indicate that there is still inequality between the sexes within sports. This department offers a series of meetings to assist national sports federations. Since it was initiated in 2014, national federations have been able to present one project per discipline. Equestrianism is a mixed sport, where men and women compete on equal terms; therefore, it is not a sport in which there is much inequality. However, once the data is analyzed, it can be seen that in the junior categories there are many more girls than boys. Nonetheless, at higher and more professional levels, men are a majority. This majority is not only within the competition arena, but also outside. For example, most judges and trainers are men.

The philosophy behind para-equestrian dressage is to fight for inclusion and equality. It is both a social and athletic effort so that all riders have equal opportunities Obviously, this is applicable to Para-equestrian Dressage, where women are less visible. To remedy this inequality, and thanks to this project, Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation and the Department for Women and Sports are offering grants to those qualified technicians who travel to training sessions. More than any other, para-equestrian disciplines translate into large-scale team-work. Beyond the participating horse and rider, the trainer, family, spectators, fellow competitors and organizers unite in a collective effort to offer these athletes the opportunity and the respect they deserve. ¡¡

PRE Herd Population vs. Coat Colors Universal XVIII, owned by Yeguada Familia 5J Márquez and bred by José Almansa Rodríguez.

60

Coat color is one of the most noticeable traits of an animal; throughout history, it has been of particular interest for mankind. Traditionally, breeders have associated the various coat colors with certain behaviors and physical traits; for example, chestnut horses, more specifically mares, exhibit a more erratic behavior than other colors. Hence, the value of a horse has always gone hand-in-hand with its color coat. Even though some studies support the hypothesis that under specific environmental circumstances some coats could be more beneficial than others in nature, it is a proven fact that coat color variations are merely a result of domestication and selective breeding. t

today, and according to PRE Sud Book data, the predominant color coat is gray followed by bay and black. Chestnuts, duns, roans, palominos, pearls, isabellas and others are a minority. Nowadays, when registering a horse in the Stud Book, all sorts of color coats are accepted except for those with large white spots located either on the heard or limbs or spots of any size on the rest of their bodies. However, this was not always the case, during the 19th century, the PRE Stud Book refused to register horses with certain color coats that today, are not that unusual such as chestnut. Even though gray is the coat that connects with the current PRE

population origins and has always been related to better behavior and performance, lately seems that breeders’ preferences have shifted towards less frequent colors. These historical differences, together with the fact that breeders usually mate horses with the same coat color, could involve genetic variability among horses of different coats. Hence, it is essential to have a genetic diversity analysis as well as other reproductive parameters that exemplify the breeding strategies followed by PRE breeders throughout history. For this purpose, genealogical records of four animal groups where studied, three of which made up of horses of the three predominant 61

PRE coat colors with at least three generations of the same color (gray, bay and black) and a fourth group with the rest of the minority coat colors (chestnuts, duns, palominos‌). Furthermore, three time periods were analyzed based on the main changes produced throughout breed history: The first one between the beginnings of the PRE Stud book and 1960, where horses were mainly used in field work; second from 1960 to 2000, this was a time of transition for the breed in which horses began to be used in leisure and sports, with greater value being seen in breed traits and beauty; thirdly, as of the year 2000, when the breed is generally focused on equestrian sports, more specifically for Dressage. In terms of the number of PRE horses born in each of the periods studied (as seen in Figure 1), the PRE population underwent substantial changes. Gray coats have always represented the largest group, although it is the one that has experienced the least increase from the second to the third period. This indicates that there is increased interest in other coat colors. Bay colored horses with familiar lines of the same color and minority coat

colors have barely been present in the breed until the second period of their history (19602000). Black coats are even more remarkable since the first two black horses that were entered with ancestors of the same color did not occur until the second period. However, as of the year 2000, its number of registrations increased considerably. A possible explanation of this clear increase is a change in breeder mentality: the idea of black being undesirable due to its association to horses pulling funeral carriages has been changed with black horses being seen as stronger and more energetic. Indirectly, it could very well be due to the inclusion of chestnut in the breed since the descendants of black stallion and mare may be chestnut. Consanguinity (shown in Figure 2) or inbreeding is a parameter that indicates to what extent horses in a given population are related to each other. From the first to second time interval, an increase was seen in all coat color groups; this later decreased as of 2000, when there was greater control of inbreeding thanks to the implementation of the PRE

Breeding Program. Gray horses have always shown a greater consanguinity percentage than the rest of the colors. Nevertheless, the value of this parameter for black horses is quite close to that of gray horses since they come from a very limited number of horses and therefore, there is a kinship relationship among them. To list the possible differences among breeding strategies based on coat color coat, the productive life (Figure 3) was analyzed. In other words, the number of years horses are active as breeding stock. The fact that the productive life all horses between 1960 and 2000 increased is quite interesting since it coincides with the period in which they stopped being used for field work and began to be more involved in sports and leisure activities. Today, gray horses make up the group with least number of active years versus black or bay horses, possibly due to breeders’ desire to specifically breed those coat colors. The results obtained demonstrate the change PRE breeders have experienced with regards to the various coat colors; this leads to the transformation of mating systems and a consequential change of consanguinity and relationship between horses. The recent interest on behalf of breeders in coat colors is remarkable, as until now, it was a minority interest. Changes in the PRE Stud Book Rules, allowing or rejecting the registration of certain color coats and the fact that gray— being the most common color—is dominant over the rest of colors, thus emphasizing the importance of maintaining them all. It is crucial to promote breeding among horses with a range of coat colors to preserve genetic variability. Knowingly, it is complex when putting this into practice, since mating is, for the most part, based on the horse’s performance, price of the covering or preference for given stallions. ¡¡
