Morales President of ANCCE AS I WRITE THESE WORDS, I am well aware that this is the last time our magazine with its current format--in use since it was created in 1978--will see the light. Although this editorial concludes an essential chapter in ANCCE history, a new chapter is about to begin and one that is adapted to the latest technologies available in the 21st Century. AS YOU VERY WELL KNOW, THIS IS OUR LAST PAPER ISSUE. As of the next issue, the edition will be digital and interactive. This provides an endless number of advantages with very few inconveniences. The main advantages will be the coverage, as the magazine will be sent out free of charge, not only to members, but to a wide range of people linked to the world of horses. Undoubtedly, this will lead to greater commercial opportunities for our members and advertisers. A DIGITAL AND INTERACTIVE FORMAT, in addition to being more accessible, makes the publication more dynamic in terms of contents. It is not just a matter of texts and photos to illustrate the various sections, but rather, we will now be able to count on videos to provide explanations as well as other information resources. The same holds true for videos provided by our advertisers. IN ADDITION TO THESE ADVANTAGES, there are other more eloquent possibilities, including paper, printing and distribution costs, which is a remarkable amount. These savings will automatically be dedicated to Purebred Spanish Horse promotional activities. ON THE OTHER HAND, I WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY to express my most sincere support and the collaboration seen on behalf of breeders, who one way or another, have participated in this last SICAB edition. It is an event, which despite all the mistakes for which the organizers accept their responsibility, with me as its leader, was greatly successful, especially from the marketing point of view. WITH THE CONCLUSION OF SICAB, OUR TERM HAS NOW BEGUN; the current Board of Directors has, until now, enjoyed the fruits left by the previous legislation. Now is when we have to push for the impulse that we think the sector needs. For this, we have already launched the new 2019 Conformation Competition Rules and Regulations, changes in the Technical Committee of Judges, training projects that will be launched as soon as possible and changes in the Breeding Program to incorporate greater critical mass of horses so that it is more reliable within a shorter period of time. I HONESTLY BELIEVE THAT 2019 is here as a year of hope. In all truth, I would like to count on your support, both in terms of compliance when we merit it, as well as constructive criticism when we deserve it. I WOULD LIKE, AND I NEED TO KNOW that you, dear breeder, feel represented by ANCCE and that we are an instrument at your service. We want you to use us to solve any and all doubts. Likewise, I would request that you help us improve by making proposals; feel free to report events that are reprehensible or worthy of action. In summary, be an active member of an institution whose main objective is to serve breeders, because solutions must come from us all, even when ANCCE is the body putting them into practice. MAY 2019 BRING YOU HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS!

Edition number 28 of the International PRE Trade Fair (SICAB), organized in Sevilla from 13th to 18th of November by ANCCE, the National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders Association, was a huge success. The upward trend in terms of statistics has been consolidated, as, year after year, they continue to rise. All in all, there were 352 horses from 148 stud farms entered for the World Purebred Spanish Horse Championships.
Second place in Section 3: Sultana MZ, owned by Maria Zara Perez.
Third place in Section 3: Dormilona Torreluna, owned by Yeguada Torreluna. 16
The judges selected to determine those horses that qualified for this Grand Final were Agustin Aragon Dominguez, Antonio Vazquez Fernandez, Jose Ramon Fernandez Villegas, Vicente Jaime Granel Ivorra, Laura Gambin Garcia, Rafael J. Garrido Herencia, Juan Manuel Carnero Sanchez and Jose Luis Rubiales Ortiz. Functionality was judged by Miguel Morales Cobos and Carmen Lopez Garcia. This year, there were an unheard of number of stud farms vying for the Best Breeder Award and one that is most prestigious for the winning breeder. The five stud farms that demonstrated their dedication through years of selection and breeding were Yeguada Las Morerias, Yeguada

Torreluna, Yeguada Maria Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera, Yeguada Martet and Yeguada Mater Christi. This later led by three points in the overall computation (17,000); for the fourth year running, this stud farm reclaim the title, being crowned 2018 World’s Best Breeder. Yeguada Las Morerias, based in Mexico, was Reserve Champion, with a total of 14,167 points.
Second place in Section 4: Destello Torreluna, owned by Jose Maria Anguas Medina and bred by Yeguada Torreluna.

Globalization is placing the Purebred Spanish Horse at the forefront of world markets, which is one of the main challenges the breed faces at present and in the near future. The Yeguada Batan from Mexico and Yeguada Trujillo from the USA were the only ones that entered horses--carrying their own and other brands–-to vie for the award for the Best Exhibitor. The title went to the experienced Yeguada Trujillo, with a total of 16,667, thus achieving their second SICAB title (the first was in 2016). Right from the very beginning of the new season, breeders have a common objective: be as competitive as possible for SICAB, which is the most important event of their equestrian calendar. Such objectives demands hours

of training and work, in addition to attending a wide range of competitions; after such an investment, it is all reduced to mere minutes when the horse steps into the arena of Pavilion 1. Tension, nerves, frustration, anger and delight are but some of the emotions that can actually be felt in the atmosphere. The best in each section competes with all others seeking to achieve the sought-after title as World Champion.

ADULT CHAMPIONS The battle to be considered the World Champion Stallion was among the winners of sections 8, 10 and 12: Inmenso Mater (the winner of section 8, bred and owned by Yeguada Mater Christi), Yucatan de Ramos (owned by Yeguada SR4 and bred by Yeguada Torrehermosa, winner of section 10) and Romero de Trujillo (owned by Yeguada Trujillo and bred by Jose Franco Sanchez, winner of section 12). Expectation was explosive. Under the attentive eyes of the audience, the final battle was titanic. Romero de Trujillo and Yucatan de Ramos were the top favorites. The duel between them was electric and palpable. In the end, the horse from Yeguada SR4,

Yucatan de Ramos, once again reigned at SICAB. While in 2016 he was proclaimed Colt Champion of the World, two years later, he returned to claim the Mecca of the PRE.

Yucatan de Ramos is a son of Utrerano VII (Lebrijano IIIUtrerana IV) and Harmonia IV (Untado II-Zurita IX). Yucatan de Ramos, who has Maluso-Agente blood running through his veins; his ancestors were historic horses from the Military Stud Farm. He started as the favorite and did not fail In the predictions. His great campaign throughout the season, combined with his superb form and the expertise of his presenter, Francisco Garcia, translated into a perfect equation that has resulted in him winning the absolutely top award: 2018 World Champion. His beauty, his harmony of shape, his majesty, the quality of his paces and his true breed type enchanted the judges. Romero de Trujillo, the main competition Ace from Yeguada Trujillo (Engañoso VI-Beoda I), was unable to repeat his 2015 achievement, when he became Supreme Champion. Nevertheless, he was proclaimed 2018 Reserve World Champion.

When it came to the adult mares, Primavera BAT (section 7), MabileĂąa DAV (section 9) and Panadera LVIII (section 11) were all victorious in their corresponding sections; therefore, they went on to form the select group of mares aspiring to become the World Mare Champion.
Second place in Section 7: Bailaora Torreluna, owned by Yeguada Torreluna.
Primavera BAT, the 2016 and 2017 World Filly Champion, continued her golden line of victories. This year, she knocked one of the greatest mares in the history of this competition, Panadera LVIII and the ruler of SICAB 2018, off her podium as World Mare Champion. During her younger years and throughout her competitive career, Primavera BAT has always stood on the top step of the podium. This year, she has battled against the elite, adult mares and those with the most experienced. With this world triumph as an adult, Primavera BAT has once again enlarged her sporting curriculum.
Third place in Section 7: Baltica Torreluna, owned by Yeguada Torreluna. 26
Bred by Maria Zara Perez and owned by Yeguada Batan, this bay mare shines for her magnificent paces. She is a diamond in the raw. Her breed characteristics are outstanding; she has beauty

and enormous expressiveness. Regarding movement, her length of stride, along with the strength and impulsion of her hindquarters, stand out. In genealogical terms, she brings together the best PRE lines: Marin Garcia (Pampero VII), Yeguada Militar (Remache) and, on her mother’s side (Legada TF, daughter of Judio VII), the Carthusian line stands out (Belico III, Habanero XI, Hacendoso IX, Descarado II). Without doubt, this is a mare that defines the PRE breed in every sense of the word, both in bloodlines and in the beauty of her conformation and functionality.
Second place in Section 8: Navegante Mor, owned by Cortijo Las Morerias España and bred by Yeguada Soto Gil.
The contest for Reserve World Champion was between Bilaora de Torreluna, Mabileña DAV and Solitaria XXXIII. The mare from AC ESP, Mabileña DAV, bred by Yeguada Domingo Arrabe Verdugo, was proclaimed 2018 Reserve World Mare Champion. BEST MOVEMENTS Year after year, the best of the horses speak for themselves, especially when it comes to the quality of their paces. to enjoy the very best Purebred Spanish Horses. When talking about Best Movements, the paces of these horses must have very clear mechanics in walk, perfectly marking a four time rhythm, a symmetrical diagonal, regular trot, and a bouncy canter, among other technical aspects.
Second place in Section 9: Hechura Mater, owned by Mater Christi.
Primavera BAT, Belmonte de Torreluna, Mabileña DAV, Atlantico de Vida, Noia IV and Estoque Mater showed the Best Movement in their respective sections. They went on to compete for the title as World Adult Champion of Movement. The aim of this Movement presentation is to demonstrate the horse’s potential. Their movement is judged over two rounds: two long sides in walk, several laps at canter and two long sides at trot, both in straight lines and on curves. Any brusque presentation causing irregularities in the rhythm of the pace or the hoof beats are subject to penalization.

Champion of Movement; that is to say, the best Adult horse at SICAB, with regards to movement. This beautiful gray, five-year-old horse has an impressive quality to the paces: mobility through the back, excellent elasticity in the trot and a relaxed walk, with great length of stride.
Second place in Section 10: Hebreo Bio, owned by Yeguada Bionest.
Third place in Section 10: Atlantico de Vida, owned by Villanueva Dacasa. 30
Everything is possible in the competition world. Atlantico de Vida, who took third place in section 10, succeeded in achieving the top score for Conformation and Functionality. Not only did this horse take the special prize for Best Movement, but also for Functionality. This gray scored 19.298, and was proclaimed World Champion of Functionality. It is most unusual to see a horse triumph in both Dressage and Conformation. Nevertheless, Romero de Trujillo, current ANCCE Cup Champion for 7 year-olds, demonstrated quality of movement in the Functionality test. Ridden by Teia Hernandez, the test was a delight, really flowing in all the exercises. Thanks to that, with a final score of 19.113, the white pearl from Yeguada Trujillo was proclaimed Reserve World Functionality Champion, at SICAB 2018.

YOUNGSTOCK Moving on from those adult horses with a great deal of experience in the competition arenas to those that have just started to make inroads into the competition world is the Youngstock. The young mares battling for the award as World Filly Champion were those placed top of sections 3 and 5, which correspond to twoand three-year-old fillies: Zahara de Millan, Sultana MZ, Ilbaina JB and Lanncera Sinia. The final of the World Filly Championship was dramatic. Tightly fought is the word that best defines the battle for the title. Finally, following uncertain moments, Zahara de Millan was crowned Champion. Bred and owned by Millan Herce, this gray mare lit up the competition arena with her typically PRE beauty. At the same time, the quality of her paces left both the judges and spectators astonished. We have before us a horse with an outstanding future. The title of Reserve World Filly Champion went to Ilbaina JB, Bred and owned by Yeguada Hnos. Jimenez Burgos.
Second place in Section 11: Panadera LVIII, owned by MÂŞ Fernanda de la Escalera de la Escalera.
Third place in Section 11: Que Gardenia Mor, owned by Las Morerias Esp. 31
Conformation-sections SECTION 12
First place in Section 12: Romero de Trujillo, owned by Yeguada Trujillo and bred by Jose Franco Sanchez.
Regarding movement, Lena AC, Destello de Torreluna, Ilbaina JB and Juramento Mater were those vying for the title of Youngstock Movement Champion. The explosive Ilbaina JB (bred and owned by Yeguada Hnos. Jimenez Burgos) continued with her great results at SICAB. This gray mare, whose exquisite movement are most outstanding, was proclaimed Filly Movement Champion. Her presentation was superb, with some lines of trot in which the mare flew with great elegance and mastery. Second place in Section 12: Oleaje de Torreluna, owned by Hacienda Santa Cruz EspaĂąa and bred by Alfredo Gala.
Third place in Section 12: Felino SG, owned by Ganaderia Navas Salas and bred by Yeguada Soto Gil. 32
Following the same procedure as the mares, the stallions facing off for the title a Colt Champion were the winners and second placed of sections 4 and 6 (two- and three-year-olds): Fer Bonachon, Destello de Torreluna, Virrey Mor and Osado de Trujillo, respectively. The battle was tense right up to the final moments. A number of factors enter into play when it comes to judging a horse. As is well-known, the SICAB arena is not just an arena. It is the place where the dreams of breeders and owners evaporate or become a reality. The role of the judge is crucial and their capacity for observation and assessment are key elements. Nevertheless,

noises, lack of concentration and the fear of the animal can be determining factors. In the end, Fer Bonachon, champion of section 4, bred by Yeguada Ferrero and owned by Ganaderia Binimelis-Müller, culminated his 2018 season with the best result possible and the icing on the cake: 2018 World Colt Champion. Unbeaten all season, this son of t multiple prizewinning Fer Bago, followed in the great footsteps of his father. His closest rival was Virrey Mor, who competed against Destello de Torreluna for the Reserve title. Virrey Mor, owned and bred by Yeguada Las Morerias, was finally awarded the title as 2018 Reserve World Colt Champion. COBRAS As is usual, the last two sections are designated to the three- and five-mare cobras, respectively. For any breeder, these are the most beautiful and representative sections. The presentation of cobras is not just a beauty contest; it goes well beyond that. It is the zenith, the culmination of all the regularity, handling, uniformity of color, breed type, height, conformation, breed

The three-mare cobra is fundamental when seeking the Best Stud Farm Award. With a total of eleven entries, the gray threemare cobra with Hechura Mater, Gloria Mater and Farandula Mater, from Yeguada Mater Christi, came top of section 13 (81.650) for the second year running. In the final section of the championships, section 14, with three participating cobras, the five bay mares from Yeguada Mater Christi, became the champion with a total of 79.250. With the announcement of the Special Awards, these horses drew the curtains on a very intense 28th SICAB, notable for good sportsmanship and clean play throughout the event. Several horses who triumphed as youngsters have returned to conquer SICAB, but now with much more experience. The lineage of champions is continuing to feed the legacy of Purebred Spanish Horses, which has grown and developed both nationally and internationally. With such a passionate backdrop for the PRE Horse, as is SICAB, the PRE exhibits its best finery, with SICAB closing the gates of yet another successful year. ÂĄÂĄ
Conformation interview
PEDRO PINGARRON, OWNER OF YEGUADA MATER CHRISTI, 2018 WORLD’S BEST BREEDER
f TEXT: LiLY FoRADo
For a fourth consecutive year, Mater Christi is, once again the World’s Best Breeder. What does it mean to win this award? After all the effort, hard work and continuous dedication that responsible PRE horse breeding requires, receiving this award as breeders is the highest world-class recognition of our breeding quality and the continuous evolution of our stud farm with each new brood of foals. It is a group award that evaluates from the widely awarded adult horses to the youngest ones that have just begun competing. Besides, in our case, we are even prouder of receiving this award since it’s the fourth year in a row. What is the key to your success as a breeder? First of all, I believe that you must dream what type of horse you want to breed, what is your ideal horse; from there, you begin working in the selection to come closer each year to that ideal horse you dream about. At the same time, this must be done humbly by analyzing the score sheets to confirm that the Judging Manual is being followed; you have to study what is passed on by each breeding horse and observe what the selection scheme recommends. In essence, listening to what others have to say, especially the professionals who are an active part of this exciting task. Specifically, in this edition of SICAB, our team has proven their professionalism, devotion, coordination and team work that makes one feel extremely proud. I’d like to highlight the tasks of out presenter, Daniel Isidoro, and our rider, Juan Lecina. With 27 horses presented in the various sections, Inmenso Mater was one of your star horses. What is your opinion on this result? Inmenso Mater is a great horse that constantly progresses as seen in the results of the past two years. He is a well-rounded horse of great structure, with an athletic complexion and excellent mechanics in his paces and true to the breed. Inmenso Mater carries blood of champions on all four sides: he is grandson of the three-time Spanish Champion, Triunfadora XXX, three-time Reserve Spanish Champion, Judio VII and Youngstock Spanish Champion, Duque CXIII. His mother is Emblema Mater who was part of the 2015 and 2016 World Champion cobra in Section 13 and 2018 Champion in Section 14. His father, Desaire Mater, was 2014 Spanish Movements Champion
36
in Section 10. As breeding stallion, he is already transmitting high quality in his offspring since two of his initial progenies hold podium positions at world championships: Hechura Mater and Inmenso Mater. Inmenso Mater is a horse with a friendly character, very intelligent, a fast learner and he loves to work. He’s got a lot of strength and has a privileged anatomy that allows him to show in his movements three natural, great quality paces; his strides are high, ample and elastic with natural balance and very good angles and well-proportioned limbs. Inmenso Mater has a powerful, well-angled croup that is inserted in a superior line to facilitate uphill movements together with good withers and a long back that is well inclined and angled and is very fluid. In summary, he is a very athletic horse, with maximum potential for sports and, at the same time, beautiful, noble, expressive and true to the breed. Mater Christi cobras have placed at the top of the ranking, in both Section 13 and Section 14. What strong points do Farandula Mater, Gloria Mater and Hechura Mater have? The components of this cobra are young mares, each with excellent individual quality. Among them, there are World and Reserve Mare Champions in various sections. What is most important is the sameness of their excellent conformation; that is seen in their racial and feminine heads, good chest and alignment, their powerful croups with good tail insertions at the same height, the union of the scapular-humerus joint, height at the withers and excellent upper lines. In addition to all of this, you must include the quality of their movements; this is seen in the extraordinary synchronization of a flawless presentation by Daniel Isidoro. In fact, it is a dark gray cobra, which is even more difficult when trying to achieve uniformity. Juramento Mater, a 3-year-old foal, has been proclaimed World Champion of Movements in his sections. How would you define his paces? I believe that the main virtue of both Juramento Mater and Estoque Mater, who also won World Champion of Movements in Section 12, is their mental balance that is expressed in their ability to concentrate when maximum performance is required. In an unknown environment, in many cases hostile due to the amount noise and decibels, with the commotion produced
Pedro Pingarron. by people in and out of the arena, they are able to express themselves and maintain the consistency and capabilities of their natural paces. Juramento has a long striding active walk, with a great overstep, is loose through the shoulders and uses his top line well. He is flexible and clearly defines his four-time rhythm. He offers a quality trot, one that is true to the breed, with ample flexion of his front limbs but with good proportions between elevation and length of stride, with very good hindquarters that overstep the front hoof print and he has great forward flexion in his hocks. In other words, more protraction than retraction of the hind limbs that truly work to reach the center of gravity and have proper retraction with suspension and a somewhat uphill tendency. In his canter, his powerful croup comes into play, along with his powerful loins that are capable of bending, lowering the hips and carrying the weight of the hind legs, while maintaining the action and range of movement. He has a strong back that eases the upward movement of his flexible shoulders, elevating the whole of his forehand. He shows longitudinal and cross-sectional balance with impulsion, suspension and rhythm. Over the years, the results obtained by Yeguada Mater Christi are the result of hard work and effort. What are the lines of work for 2019? There is nothing but truth in the saying “to reap the fruits of one’s efforts”, since in one’s life, just like in a dictionary, “efforts” precedes “success” and it is only one part of the formula to reach our current position. In competitions, what other objectives can one have when in 2018, Mater Christi once again appeared in golden letters on another page in the history of the Spanish Horse? Is is the first time in 28 years of SICAB
history that a stud farm receives the award of World’s Best Breeder four times in a row. With regards to the World Championship, we are the only stud farm that has been awarded World’s Best Breeder in all four times since its beginning. However, from a breeder’s perspective, you always feels like there’s room for improvement. Therefore, we will continue to devote all five senses to this noble and passionate task, which is breeding Spanish Horses and trying to evolve towards the ideal horse we dream about. How would you summarize the success of Yeguada Mater Christi at this 28th edition of SICAB? Our main objective was to enjoy and share with everyone our stud farm jewels, to show how and what we breed and receive the recognition that excellence appears in all our foals, and therefore, at the various ages and in all sections. It has been the first time in SICAB history that a stud farm has participated with 27 horses, all of which were bred on the same stud farm. Twenty-one bibs, two 3-mare cobras and another two 5-mare cobras being all of the components with his brand showing great excellence in these four cobras. In Section 13, there is a 2015 and 2016 World Mare Champion and another 2017 and 2018 World Mare Champion. While in Section 14, one first-time cobra component has been proclaimed 2018 World Mare Champion and the other World Reserve Mare Champion the same year. By winning at an individual level with youngstock and adults, stallions and mares, both in conformation and movements, the quality of the stud farm as a whole has been proven. This does not necessarily correspond to a given moment in time, a brood or a specific horse, but rather the fact that excellence has been fixed In all generations and sexes making up the stud farm as a whole. ¡¡ 37

For a third consecutive year, the 27th edition of SICAB, Para-equestrian Dressage has been included in the program. There were three riders--one in each grade--who shined in their own light. Once again, they proved their perseverance stride by stride, to give us all a lesson in sportsmanship. Spain’s current Reserve Champion in Grade 3, David de la Iglesia riding Jaen Caracol, was the only participant in this category at SICAB. Jaen Caracol, his inseparable companion bred by Yeguada del Caracol and owned by Maria de la Iglesia, have participated in an endless number of arenas. However, there is no doubt that participating at SICAB was the golden touch for the 2018 season. In Grade 4, Roberto Aguilera repeated the success of the past season, but this year, but with a different partner. He earned gold at this edition riding Caprichos DR, owned by R. Aguilera and bred by Yeguada Daro. This pair scored 62.667 in the test for teams and 62.073 for individuals. Last, but not least, and similar to Roberto was Alejandro Espejo who led the group in Grade 4, both in teams and individually. He rode Operario VI, a horse bred by Santiago Illan Fernandez and owned by Espejo Segura Garcia. Pity, frailness and disability that are still used to describe paraequestrian riders and this has to change. Words such as admiration and respect, independently of their abilities need to be used. SICAB has once again included Para-equestrian Dressage on its competition program. These riders are an example of achievement; step by step, together with battle mates, the ride daily against the odds to overcome difficulties. Undoubtedly, they have empowering strength and they prove it day by day. ¡¡

As has been the case for the past three years, Junior dressage tests took place in Pavilion three, the same as all the other Dressage tests. First place in U12 (Alevines) went to Ainhoa Gonzalez Flores riding Almonteño M. Suay, bred by Rafael Martinez Suay and owned by Yeguada El Cortijo, with a score of 70.365%. Both on the first day, in the team competition, and on the second, in the individual competition, Ainhoa topped the leader-board. Specifically, in the Final test, she was the only Junior rider to exceed the 70% barrier, with 70.784%. Regarding U14 (Infantiles), there were six riders entering the arena in search of the title as Champion. This was the most contested test of all the Junior categories, with Mariana Varon earning a golden double Riding Henares I, bred by la Yeguada Angostura and owned by Yeguada el Principado de España, Mariana performed two flowing tests, beautifully on the bit. U18 (Juveniles 0*) was a test that saw the most joggling of positions on the leader-board. During the first round, in the test for teams, Sol Gonzalez riding Altanero LXVIII was victorious. Nevertheless, the next day, in the individual test, she failed to achieve the same success, as her horse spooked in canter across one of the diagonals, which led to Altanero LXVIII changing legs and going against the rider’s aids, thus leading to the loss of points. Nuria Aurioles with Naviero de Nadales, bred by Yeguada Nadales and owned by Santiago Jose Aurioles, maintained third place on the first day. On the second day, they rose two places, thus winning the test. This granted them the crown as Champions in this category thanks to the tally of their averages. When it came to the test for U18 (Juveniles 1*), there were only two participants. Maria del Mar Hernandez riding Rosmarinus won the team test with a score of 65.657%. In the individual test, Lucia Vargas riding Crisitiano EO, bred by Eliseo Orenes and owned by Yeguada García

Lastly was the test for Young Riders. Along the same lines as Ainhoa Gonzalez and Mariana Varon, Jesus Esteban Cornejo riding Mio II, bred by Ignacio Bravo Martínez and owned by Real Maestranza Caballería in Ronda, was the winner and for a third consecutive year. With a total score of 67.941% over both days, this rider from the Real Maestranza had no rivals, so he knew right from the start that he would waltz his way towards the triple. One of the great highlights of his tests was the canter pirouettes, with the beautiful hoof-beats standing out both at the start and end of the movement. Over these three years, this combination has gone through a huge development, above all regarding the rhythm of their trot and the straightness and bounciness of their changes. ¡¡

Ridden by Alba Abollo and owned and bred by Yeguada, the indisputable winner of the test for four-year-olds was Norteño FS with an accumulated total of 79.100%. Achieving a golden double (preliminary and final) with a huge lead of four points over the second placed horse in the global computation, Norteño FS was the only horse to exceed the 80% barrier, with 80.400% in the Final test. The judges appreciated this horse’s quality to then award him 7.7 for his trot, 8.0 for the walk, 8.0 for the canter, 8.3 submission and 8.2 for future expectations. Needless to say, he has fascinating paces. Norteño FS stood out for his elastic trot, with an uphill tendency and pronounced flexion in the joints of his hindquarters. This horse from Avila has a walk in which he uses his top line to mark a perfect four-time rhythm, and a very energetic and bouncy canter. Antonio Nogales, with Del Tibio Ciclon, bred by Yeguada Ssamdi Bernal and owned by Hnos. Yañez Azuaga, took second place in the preliminary, but went down to third in the final. Nevertheless, in the overall reckoning, in which he achieved 75.600%, he took second place on the podium. This beautiful, tall grey horse stood out for his length of stride in trot, as well as a very stable and light contact, while being beautifully on the bit. Third on the podium was Velero W, a horse bred by Jose Werner Lopez and owned by Yeguada Curro Gil and ridden by the experienced Francisco Gil. This grey horse produced a very expressive trot with great impulsion, a well-defined walk and a very uphill canter. He was much more relaxed on the second day than on the first to perform some very expressive canter extensions with a great length of stride. His final score was 75.000%. ¡¡

This class had everyone hanging on the edges of their seats right up to the very end when the champions were announced. The final day was full of incredibly tense moments in the battle for the medals. Excitement and equality were most notable during this test, which gave no truce to its participants. Molinero FS, bred and owned by Yeguada Arroyomonte, needs no introduction. Throughout his competitive career, his successes at the reins of Alba Abollo speak for themselves. This 2017 ANCCE Cup Champion in the 4 year-old category once again repeated his success this year. Molinero FS demonstrated, throughout the two-day competition, that he had a high quality electric trot, with a very flexible back; his cadenced walk with a prodigious length of stride could not have covered more ground and he boasted a canter with good natural balance. In the final, exceeding the 80% barrier, specifically 80.400%, the strength of his medium trots contrasted with a subtle delicate and elegant contact, and a stupendous walk (8.2). After a season full of successes, including the World Championships for Young Horses, Alba Abollo and Molinero FS placed the cherry on the cake for the 2018 season with the best award possible: the gold medal at the Final of the ANCCE Cup for 5 yearolds. Just two points behind in the overall tally was Qu de Susaeta, with 78.500%; owned and bred by Yeguada Susaeta, this horse was proclaimed Reserve Champion in the 5-year-old category. In the final test, Guillermo Ayala with his pearl grey Qu de Susaeta was responsible for knocking Alba Abollo from first place. Yeguada de Susaeta horse and rider performed much more solidly and orderly than in the first test; undoubtedly, they stood out for their really uphill canter, with an impressive length of stride and great balance. This pace was awarded 8.4 by the judges. Campanero HGF, a horse bred on American soil and owned by Yeguada Hampton Green Farm (Michigan, USA) took third place on the podium (77.350%). With a very elegant copy-book contact, in the preliminary, this horse with Marin Garcia lineage, took second place in the line-up, while in the final, he descended three places. In both tests, Jose Daniel Martin Dockx demonstrated the great symbiosis that he has with Campanero HGF. The quality of the paces of this Camaron IX descendant spoke for itself: a very rhythmical trot, a bouncy canter, combined with a clear and regular walk. ÂĄÂĄ

In the section for 6-year-olds, there was a continual coming and going of positions to determine the medals. This level incorporates lateral exercises, two-track work and simple changes, which is a major change when comparing it to the 5-year-old test. Toral RJ, a grey horse bred by Yeguada La Ciervina and owned by Pujalte, was crowned ANCCE Cup Champion for 6-year-olds, with an average of 76.200%. Ridden by Ruben Arrabe for the two days, this horse appeared a little nervous in the arena, but the know-how and, above all, the qualities of his rider enabled them to demonstrate the great combination that they are. Both in the first qualifying round, and in the final, their lateral work—for example, the half-pass—was very parallel with the arena, with enormous amplitude and a very elegant cadence. His canter strides were very regular, with a correct rhythm, but his hind legs changed together in some of the simple changes. Susurro ARB, bred by Yeguada San Antonio and owned by Barcelona Horses, won the silver medal with a final average of 74.800%. Agusti Elias performed two very clean tests, with the highlight being his trot, which was superbly fluid and rhythmical, but there was a lack of consistency in the contact. Regarding his canter, this descendent of Manchego ARB was well engaged behind, with energetic and active strides, clearly stepping in front of the prints from his forehand and supporting his weight well. Third place, with an accumulated total of 74.600%, went to Selecto JF, a horse bred and owned by Yeguada J.F. Miño. Selecto JF demonstrated beautiful contact and was absolutely regular in all three paces. His extended trot was not rushed and really covered the ground. In the preliminary round, he was a little tense in the rein-back; however, he performed solid, active, elastic, relaxed medium and extended walks that were really free through the shoulders. The judges awarded this pace an 8 in the final test, which was the best score given for a walk. ¡¡

A total of eleven horses contested this section. The rivalry between horses bred abroad (in the USA) and those on the home turf (from Spain) was the most noteworthy aspect in this category. But it all goes to show the acceptance of the breed the world over. This year, Romero de Trujillo, bred by Jose Franco Sanchez, owned by Yeguada de Trujillo and ridden by Teia Hernandez, staked his claim right from the start. Earning a Double, this grey horse has impressed us all with his great record in the competition arenas of both Conformation and Dressage. Yeguada Trujillo’s top competition ace has three great paces. His canter is very bouncy, with undeniably straight changes, combined with a walk that is superbly free through the shoulders. The strength of his trot is outstanding. Horse and rider move in perfect unison, thus demonstrating their potential for future tests. With this double triumph of 73.107% and 74.700%, preliminary and final respectively, Teia Hernandez culminated a magnificent season with the gold medal. Mejorano HGF, bred and owned by Hampton Green Farm, follows in the wake of his father. A son of Grandioso III, Mejorano HGF has quality in his veins. Along similar lines as Campanero HFG, his self-carriage, and contact were admirable and he was beautifully on the bit. Elasticity of movement perfectly defines Mejorano HGF’s mechanics. His agility in all three paces is innate. The judges awarded him a score of 78.800 for his paces and 67.714 for technique, giving an average of 73.257% in the final test. From the technique point of view, the changes were most noteworthy, as these were really uphill. Close on his heels, or in this case, his hooves, in third place was Quincallo de Indalo ridden by Alejandro Sanchez del Barco. Come-backs are absolutely possible as can be demonstrated by this horse, bred and owned by Yeguada de Indalo. In the first qualifying round, this horse— silver medal winner at SICAB 2016 in the category for 5-year-olds— placed seventh. In the final test, he moved up no less than five places on the leader board, thanks to a magical test. His walk was swinging, with the sequence of hoof-beats following one after the other in perfect fourtime. This pace was awarded an 8 by the judges. When it came to his trot, this was really expressive in the extensions and his two-track work showed tremendous freedom in the shoulders. In summary, the podium in this category included: the Gold medal went indisputably to Teia Hernandez with Romero de Trujillo. The American-bred horse Mejorano HGF, ridden by Jose Daniel Martin Dockx, earned the Silver medal, while the Bronze went to Quincallo de Indalo at the reins of Alejandro Sanchez del Barco. ¡¡

Similar to Alba Abollo and Teia Hernandez, Claudio Castilla riding Secretario MG waltzed along a golden road towards the title as 2018 ANCCE Cup Champion in the Prix St Georges category. Claudio Castilla with Secretrario MG, a horse bred by Yeguada Marin Garcia and owned by Jesus Ubeda Roncero, exceeded the 70% barrier on both days, to perform two remarkable tests showing quality in all the exercises. The flying changes were very bouncy, straight and uphill. To the soundtrack of “Two steps from hell”—very melodious music and well-suited to the different changes in rhythm—this Olympic rider turned up the center line for the last time in extended trot with only one hand on the reins. Their triumphal finale enabled them to be crowned Champions, with a final average of 71.990%. With only one point behind in the final score, the rider from Yeguada La Angostura on Israel X let no one down. Francisco Gil performed two harmonious tests and was proclaimed Reserve Champion in this category with a score of 70.395%. Israel X is most outstanding for the quality of his trot. On both days, his trot extensions were extraordinary and his two-track work showed immense freedom in his shoulders. Occasionally, the horse appeared to be a little closed through the neck, but later, the competition experience of his rider enabled him to overcome these minor details and he gained points with a superb execution of the pirouettes, in which the horse was well engaged behind, lowering his hind quarters, together with great flexion in his joints. Finishing off the podium, (69.127%) was Ureo VIII, a bay horse bred by Francisco Santiago Ruiz and owned by Jose Luis Montosa. He was a little tense in the musical test, as he appeared to be somewhat nervous. Nevertheless, Ureo VIII stood out for his elegant and elastic trot and his tremendous reach in the two-track work. To the sound of Mamma Mia in trot, the level of difficulty shown in the exercises was enormous. In canter, following the music of Felices los cuatro (by Maluma), he performed both three- and four-time changes. These changes were clean, big and fluid. ¡¡

With the stands full and a totally enthralled audience, this denouement was gripping right up to the very end. The sum of the averages awarded in the Grand Prix and the musical test dictates the final placings. A total of eleven riders danced with their partners in the competition arena. Bajel de Valdesol is not just any old horse. With Jose Antonio Garcia Mena holding the reins, this stallion bred by Gonzalo Valenzuela Ruiz and owned by Yeguada Valdesol, was crowned the ANCCE Cup Champion for Prix St Georges in the 26th edition of SICAB. Two years later, he has repeated this feat, but at the highest level: the Grand Prix. Remember that this is his first season in GP. With very little experience at this level and a final total of 72.311%, he performed several exercises with great technical merit, including the extended canter. To the sound of Spanish melodies, this Andalusian rider strung together several exercises with an incredibly high technical level; he left the audience spellbound with his double canter pirouette with one hand and the ease with which he linked exercises requiring the utmost collection, like the piaffe, with those requiring the maximum extension of medium trot. All the trot work was exquisite; the exercises flowed to the rhythm of the music. Elegance, subtlety and tranquility are but some of the words that could be used to describe this musical test. The great surprise of SICAB 2018 was Quinto AP, bred by Agricola Peralta and owned by Huertas Zurita. This descendent of Hilador IX, together with his rider, Francisco Amador Cortes, come from the world of High School. In 2017, they were proclaimed Champions of that discipline at SICAB. Taking second place in the GP and beating Jose Antonio Garcia Mena to first place in the Kür, the audience fell in love with Amador Cortes to the chords of A mi mare in the trot sections and Despacito for the canter. This rider captivated the audience exercise after exercise, with several piaffe pirouettes, zig-zag half pass in passage and the last center line in medium trot followed by a piaffe at X. The audience became actively involved to applauded each piaffe pirouette. Once the test was complete, the audience, astonished by the performance, gave the rider an effusive ovation. Amador was unable to contain his tears of joy. The rapport between horse and rider bordered perfection. On occasions, the horse’s technique was a little rushed in the canter, with a slight lack of engagement behind. But on others, everything was not dependent on the technical execution of the exercises, but rather in their harmony, rapport and enjoyment. It would appear that the judges were not all in agreement; the will of the audience went some way towards determining the final score with the audience ending up being the judges themselves. Their golden score, which allowed them to win this test, was 74.375%. The last step of the podium was occupied by Goloso D, bred by Yeguada Domingo Arrabe Verdugo and owned by Maryam Alkhalifa (69.617%). At the reins of Claudio Castilla, Goloso D shone with his own light in the piaffe exercises, beating his hindquarters with superb rhythm and activity. The changes of pace perfectly matched the music, and the horse marked the tempo correctly with his hoof beats both in passage and in piaffe. Regarding the stability of contact and whether he was on the bit, on certain occasions the horse was a little closed and behind the vertical, but the Olympic rider’s “knowhow” allowed the strengths of the horse to shine through, such as his groundcovering half pass. ¡¡

ANCCE Cup for Dressage-Interview
FIDEL SAEZ, OWNER OF YEGUADA ARROYOMONTE, 2018 BEST BREEDER FOR DRESSAGE
f
For the third consecutive year, Yeguada Arroyomonte has earned the Best Breeder for Dressage Award at SICAB 2018. What does this success mean to you? It recognized the efforts and vocation of Yeguada Arroyomonte to breed horses since it was founded in 1989 and it confirms the breeding system we use with the a specific type of sport horse that we have always wanted to breed. Both Molinero FS and Norteño FS were crowned ANCCE Cup Champions in the 4 and 5-year-old categories, respectively. How does such success affect your stud farm? Norteño FS is the World Champion in the 4-year-old category and Molinero FS among the 5-year-olds. Both are moving forward to confirm that these two horses represent everything for the FS brand. At the past edition of SICAB, Alba Abollo riding Molinero FS earned a Gold Medal in the 4-year-old category. What does it feel like to have once again defended the Championship title? It reiterates that Molinero FS continues his excellent Dressage career. In only two seasons, Molinero FS has proven what no other PRE has done in Dressage. He boasts an impressive career by obtaining the highest score (8.22) for the Spanish team at the 2018 World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Ermelo, in addition to various medals at International competitions. At the age of four, he broke all SICAB records with a score of 84%; that was a historic maximum! He won the Final for the Young Horse Selection Tests and was considered Excellent. His results at national and International competitions confirm the quality of Molinero FS. What is Molinero FS like? He is all heart; he has excellent mechanics, well-rooted natural paces that are ample,
64
elastic, uphill and harmonious… He is very dedicated, with a good head and full of strength and power. When it comes to conformation, he has very correct body regions in keeping with PRE breed quality. These traits have been more than visible since his birth; he has always been a winner. Currently confiding in the future of his descendants and our hopes are high. When it comes to selecting stallions and mares for breeding, what criteria do you follow? Our first PRE horses were mares that we rode, and today, they are the foundation for what we breed. We have always enjoyed riding our mares for recreational purposes and that has allowed us to better know what we are breeding. The selection of our horses responds to our own tastes. We enjoy breeding to obtain synergy between PRE breed quality and traits for sports that prove the usefulness of the horse and today’s reason for being. An FS horse is one that follows the order of these characteristics: good heart, natural paces with aptitudes for sports while at the same time faithful to breed quality. What training system do you follow with your horses? The system used with our horses is supervised by Alberto Garcia-Briñon, who uses the German and Portuguese training systems by Monica Theodorescu and Camilo Borges respectively. What is the key to your success as a breeder? Be a breeder; in other words, feeling for the horses and living with them. That is the only way to learn everything about them; If that weren’t the case, we could never appreciate them enough. Our horses have given us so much and they have made us faithful to our way of seeing the Purebred Spanish Horse.
MARiA SAEZ
MEJOR GANADERÍA
Fidel Saez. What are the names of your most emblematic horses? All of our horses are emblematic; not only those that have competed and proven their traits in the arena--after all, they are a minimal representation of the traits shown by the horse on our stud farm. From our broodmares, which are essential cornerstones that go unnoticed, to horses that have been successful at conformation competitions-Islero XXXIII, Zara IX, Bolera LXVI, Coral XXV…--and in Dressage arenas. Coral XXV and Cariñoso LXVI were the first to earn good results at CDN competitions, and even this latest at the age of 6, was the Reserve Champion of Spain at the 2009 Spanish National Young Horse Championship. Isleño FS earned several medals at SICAB, including being the Champion in the category for 5-year-olds. Jara FS is the only mare at SICAB that combined victories in Dressage and Conformation by winning Dressage in the 4-year-old category, Best Movements in her section, Champion of Movement and the Silver in her section for Conformation. The successes of Joya FS include being Dressage Champion at SICAB two years in a row; the trophy earned by Luz FS at SICAB 2017 and those of Molinero FS and Norteño FS are most noteworthy. Could you define Yeguada Arroyomonte horses in terms of movement? All FS horses are very noble, with a special ability to learn; they are tireless thanks to
their huge hearts and willingness to work. These characteristics are reinforced by their mechanics and excellent natural paces as found typically In the PRE: ample stride, elastic and suspended trot and a springy, uphill canter. They execute these paces in such a way that they are distinguishable to all those watching them; describing them is hard to do. In summary, they are very versatile horses that are prepared to a variety of sports. How would you summarize the participation of Yeguada Arroyomonte at the 28th edition of SICAB? The 2018 review has been superb because the results consolidate Yeguada Arroyomonte as a reference in Dressage and Movements. Our horses have provided us with great happiness and this keeps our expectations going while encouraging us to continue with our breeding and selection efforts. How will you face the 2019 season? We have high hopes for the foaling of a new generation and the youngsters we will be fostering to soon be competing, both in Conformation and in Dressage. Our confidence lies in our staff, who we consider family. They express their motivation, professionalism, work and efforts daily; all of which are characteristics that multiplied the success to progressively improve our breed and reinforce sports in the Purebred Spanish at international levels. ¡¡ 65

At SICAB 2019, the ANCCE Cup for Spanish High School brought back the essence of equestrian art both in terms of traditional attire, typically worn by 13th Century riders, as well as the mounts of the Spanish Horse, which is so representative of Spanish High School. As always, the bleachers of Pavilion 2 were packed to the rafters to watch a discipline with a growing number of participants and viewers. The 38 horse/rider pairs participated in the various categories including the tests for Young Horses and Long Reins as well as medium, advanced and superior levels. As has become traditional, the ANCCE Cup for Doma Vaquera was held on the mornings of Friday and Saturday, with the final lineup and results being produced by tallying the points earned over the two days. With the stands overflowing with delighted spectators, they enjoyed witnessing both sections of this competition: Novice and Advanced. The judges for the Advanced section of this competition were Jose Manuel Jurado, as President accompanied by Inmaculada Robledillo and Javier Alapont, with the Federation Representative being Manuel Baena. With eight participants, the final placings were as follows: First prize went to Jaime Jiménez riding Jeronimo Aldara, bred by Campa la Selva and owned by Los Lelitos, with a final total of 537.333 points. This combination, which improved greatly, has up-graded from second place in 2017 to the top prize this year. Second place was taken by Pedro Urbina on Hortelano LXXV, bred by Juan Francisco Rosa Marrero and owned by Yeguada Lanzarote, with an average of 533.500 points. Pedro and Hortelano were in second place at the start of the competition on Saturday and gave their all in their attempt to secure the gold. Although they were unable to succeed, they did end up very close behind. Alfredo Liñana riding Eneas V, bred by Marcelino Gonzalez Alfaro and owned by Ganaderia Alfredo Liñana were third, with a final total of 507.166 points. This combination came to Seville from Valencia to offer an example of how Doma Vaquera has great riders from all over Spain. In the Novice section, there were eleven participants. The judges, in this case, were Antonio Vicente Cañadas, as president, who was accompanied by Juan Fernando Estrada and Juan Jose Garcia; Manuel Baena was, once again, the Federation Representative. The line-up in this section was as follows: With a total of 398.166 points, first place went to Alvaro Marron riding Sison VI, a horse bred by Antonio Bravo Asencio and owned by Ganaderia 71

Second place went to Nicolas de la Hermosilla with Naranjito XLIX, from ganaderia de Miura, who achieved 386.667 points. This was the same place on the leader-board as last year, but with a different horse from the same Stud Farm, which is closely related with fighting bulls and of course, Doma Vaquera. Third place was for Francisco Jesus Jimenez riding Atento de Torreluna, bred by Yeguada Torreluna and owned by Francisco Sobera, whose final score was 375.334 points. This combination was impressive thanks to its great rhythm shown in every pace throughout their test, clearly demonstrating the vaquero spark and attitude. ÂĄÂĄ

2018 saw the first ANCCE Cup for Working Equitation, in an event as important as SICAB. After a series of ANCCE qualifier competitions held at regional and national levels, those horses and riders that successfully surpassed the requirements throughout the year classified to premiere at this Final. In the world of sports, Working Equitation is gaining momentum; there are more and more riders showing an active interest in this competition. Currently, this discipline is practiced in more than twenty countries. It is regulated internationally by the WAWE, the World Association of Working Equitation. After the success of the 2017 exhibition shows, nine horses/riders participated in the various categories of the 2018 ANCCE Cup Final. While the Dressage trials were held on the first day, the Speed and Handling trials took place on the second day. These three tests are obligatory, as they are an essential component of Working Equitation competitions. Each test scores individually; the percentages earned are tallied to determine the final score. Day three was for a series of Handling trials; an exhibition format was used to promote the discipline. The various obstacles and how to face them was explained following a graphic of the route. On the first day, Corregidor VI won the Dressage trails among the Novice contestants with a very correct test. Leon AP participated in Intermediate while Hosco de la Luz among the Advanced participants earned their applause thanks to a fantastic performance on behalf of the German pair. Day two welcomed the most interesting and exciting tests: Handling and Speed. During these tests, the riders proved the knowledge of their horses as they skillfully maneuvered the established route to overcome the various obstacles. After some very tight score among the Novice contestants, the tie among Intermediate contestants was decided by the Speed test. The quality of the Advanced test was visible, with the classification being as follows: In the category for Novice Seniors, first place with 12 points was for Pedro Jose Macias riding Filosofo IX, owned by Juan Martin Vazquez. Second place was for Juan Miguel Raiza with 8 points. He was riding Imperioso JLE IV, from Yeguada de Jose Luis de la Escalera. Third place with 7 points went to Jose Manuel Leon in the saddle of Corregidor VI, owned by Villablanca and bred by Jose Manuel Carranco Alonso. First place among Intermediate Seniors was Jose Antonio Olea riding Leon AP, from Agricola Peralta (7 points). Pablo Martin riding Tango LN, owned by his rider and bred by Los Nogales placed second with 5 points. When it came to Advanced Seniors, the highest score was 12 points, thus giving first place to Gelczinnus with Hosco de la Luz, owned by Caballos de la Luz and bred by Sa Torre de Son Danus. Second place in the classification and with five points was Jon Lekuberria on Jaspe X, from Hermanos Batres. With four points, the pair made up of Jose Rodriguez and Caballero XIX, owned by Jose Rodriguez Vega and bred by Yeguada Cerro-Alto held third place. Working Equitation, a fast-moving discipline that performs traditional country tasks, caught the eye of the SICAB audience. Each test proved to be both stimulating and exciting for viewers. ÂĄÂĄ

The SICAB program, which is the main Purebred Spanish Horse epicenter, is full of activities, includeing the Exhibition and Side-saddle Competitions. With regards to the Exhibition Competition, there were eleven participants strutting their stuff in the arena of Pavilion 2, vying to be the one to most delight the viewers. When it came down to the lineup for prizes, there was no play in the positions, as the top three competitors remained in the same order on both days of the competition. The great winner--11 marks ahead of the remaining participants–was Samuel Flores riding Berbeno BAS, a horse bred by Yeguada Bassols, with a total of 314 points. This Andalusian rider captivated not only the judges, but also the spectators, with his Classical Equitation exercises, making up Spanish High School. In second place, with a total of 305 points, was Milagros Calderon riding Buho III, a horse bred by Monte San Lorenzo. To the sound of Flamenco music, Milagros presented a Garrocha number, seated on a Vaquera sidesaddle. Finally, to close the podium, were the Campos siblings, with their 19th Century Dressage Pas de Deux. With their respective horses, Latino I and Ensolador performed to Ellie Goulding’s Love Me Like You Do in their trot work. The black and white horses showed perfect synchronization to produce an unforgettable dance. The Side-saddle competition was distinguished by its impressive elegance. This style of riding differs in both position and clothing. The side-saddle rider does not sit astride, but rather, perpendicular to the direction in which the horse is moving, with both her legs to the left side of the horse’s back. Of the 18 participants, there were four winners in their respective sections. In the Promotion 2 section (Dressage), Maria Pilar Cantalejo, riding Guadix BR, bred by Jose Manuel Barriada, completed the two

Exhibitions and Side-Saddle days with averages exceeding 59%. Her accumulated total was 60.220, thus allowing her to claim the Gold. As with Maria Pilar Cantalejo, Maria Santana Carnicer with Wonderfull SS, bred by Francisco Santana, was unrivaled in Promotion 3 (Dressage): 60.686 and 65.000 were her averages. The section for the youngest horses (High School, Young Horses), had the highest number of contestants, with six participants. The fight for gold was fierce; there was great play on the leader board. Due to this, the second day was decisive in deciding the final positions. In the end, Ainhoa Martin Acedo riding Decano LER, bred by Jose Antonio Lerma, was proclaimed champion, reaching a total of 61.213 points. Last, but by no means least, Rocio Ramirez Palacios with Trasmayo de SR, bred by Salvador Ramirez, culminated her participation at SICAB with the gold medal in U12 Doma Vaquera. ÂĄÂĄ

Pilot Program to Assess 2 and 3 year-olds at Liberty

For the first time, ANCCE decided to run a pilot competition: Assessment at Liberty for Young Horses, during the International PRE Horse Trade Fair, SICAB 2018. A group of internationally renowned judges, who are on the team advising the KWPN in its selection tests, travelled to SICAB to judge the natural paces of 2 and 3 year-old PREs. They used the same international assessment circuit and criteria as used for the Dutch Sports Horse. The objective of this competition, which attracted many adept and good critiques, is to detect talented young horses with potential for sports. Throughout Europe, such competitions are well established. An example of this are the Dutch breeders, who run these competitions for the KWPN for several reasons, including to use itas a selection method for the breed, for the breeders to check their own stock of youngsters prior to the commencement of training, and more specifically, it is a pathway to market the breed. Under this system and as a reference, ANCCE held the competition with Yeguada de La Cartuja–Hierro del Bocado horses on Friday, November 16th in the arena of Pavilion 1, so that breeders could have first-hand experience, see the test and the assessment system. Thus, this system seeks to become consolidated as a competition in the years to come and to offer a new marketing route for the PRE horses, among other advantages. The judges of this competition were looking at a number of aspects: walk, trot and canter, leg alignment (on a hard surface) and conformation for sporting excellence (a single score). At the completion of each of the tests, the qualities of each young horse are explained publically; each for improvement is stated, after which, each participant is given their score sheet. Undoubtedly, there is a myriad of advantages to taking part in these young horse assessments. Nevertheless, one of the most important aspects that benefits breeders is that there are no Presenters to influence the young horse in any way during the test, as the horse is at liberty. Moreover, the cost of such a competition is much lower than any other, as it requires no qualified personnel to run it; and preparation is very basic. ¡¡

For SICAB, not only is the equestrian show one of its defining traits, it is a favorite for the general audience. Year after year, its ability to summon a crowd has not waned, as people come to see the acrobats and the various equestrian performances with the best riders in the world. This year, the Show began with the National Police Calvary Squad, which included the participation of the Moroccan Police Force. Both squads ride Purebred Spanish Horses, which means that the PRE has twinned two countries, two continents and two cultures. Six mounted policemen show the wonderful synchronization with their steeds by performing a beautiful carousel. Following a winding pathway, Traditional Carriage drivers followed the police. Two of them--Competition carriages--remained in the arena a bit longer to show their speed and skills when they bend over for curves to compensate the inertia of the carriage. They were followed by a group of broodmares that make up the Military Stud Farm twelve-mare cobra with both gray and bay mares. This year, the Armed Forces are celebrating their 125th anniversary as breeders. Another celebration was enjoyed by the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, which has been operating for 45 years. Daily, the school offered a different performance: Fantasia a Caballo (Horseback Fantasy) was executed by Belen Bautista; Paso de Dos (Pas de Deux) by riders Ignacio Lopez and Juan Jose Verdugo; Fantasia a Caballo (Horseback Fantasy) by Ignacio Lopez; Paso de Tres (Pas de Trois) was performed by riders Belen Bautista, Blanca Roman and Cristina Marquez, while Riendas Largas (Long Reins) was undertaken by rider Juan Jose Verdugo. Horses were honored for their past dedication, when they were essential for farming. A group of riders explained what thrashing was all about; in other words, they showed how horses helped separate the grain from the straw. It took people back to rural life which equines were crucial for almost everything. The Hungarian express showed how mail was transported in ancient times. Thanks to four pairs of riders from the firm Impulsion, they ran up and down the arena as fast as possible to show their skills. They left the spotlight to an astounding ovation. Five-time National Champion Rafael Arcos is the soul of Doma Vaquera. The audience was thrilled with his abilities. Peace was short-lived as the vaulting performance entered the ring to gallop from one corner to another. Impressive gymnastics had the audience clapping, and it was but a taste of what was yet to come with the final performance. Saddleless and with no reins, three black horse appeared, until Santi Serra called them with his natural horsemanship. They obeyed immediately, and moved center stage with him and his dogs. From there, with the background music of Fuel Fandango seemed to hypnotize his animals. They responded to his every whim with no need to even touch them. One by one, the laid down on the ground and slept. The various performances, the music, the master of ceremonies, the special effects and the presentation mingled together to show the world the beauty, noble spirit, versatility and possibilities of the Purebred Spanish Horse.
