Tirado Agudo President of ANCCE

Call for commitment

w

WHEN A BREEDER freely and voluntarily accepts the Presidency of ANCCE, as was my case, he (or she) must, right from the beginning, understand that he/she becomes a person with many obligations and virtually no rights. Therefore, one must be prepared to face all types of critique. Lately, I have been criticized greatly, by almost everyone regarding the Conformation Competitions. Since taking office, altering the tense atmosphere at competitions has been my collaborators and my own most urgent priority. We have been working courageously in recent months; moreover, we have strived to embrace the participation of the entire sector in our work. For the first time, breeders have been given the opportunity to share their opinions, critique and suggestions about any matter considered appropriate, because I am convinced that any major measure affecting the sector must arise from majority consensus. My first decision as President and in an effort to avoid misunderstandings was to not participate with my stud farm at Conformation Competitions until we have a regulatory framework. This, to the extent that it is possible, guarantees asepsis and fair play in judging; nonetheless, the fact is that this action is detrimental for my own personal interests as a breeder. The problem of competitions is their lack of credibility; not in a given person, but rather, in all those taking part at the venue….judges, breeders, presenters, riders and consultants. In general, nobody is guilt free. Competitions are the faithful reflection of the breeder and the social reality that governs today’s society. If, in addition to this we add on the subjective factor, which by nature, is an intrinsic part of the judging process, then we begin to understand the direction this important activity is taking in recent years…and when I say in recent years, I mean in the past decade. The Rules & Regulations seek impartiality to mirror practices that work in other competition models. We want the important decisions affecting competitions to remain on the fringe of ANCCE government so that there is no insinuation of bias. We have created self-managing bodies where breeders do not participate; we have changed the judging model; we have drafted a Judging Manual--written by professionals in the field--which, together with the breed quality standards, position and associate the scores granted by judges. Moreover, we want the Rules & Regulations to be alive, something that evolves over time, something that is enriched by the contributions of all. Nevertheless, there is something even more important and it is none other than us, the breeders who accept the rules of the game. That does not mean that we just sit back and fail to report possible irregularities; that is not what I am asking. What I would really like to see is for reports of wrongdoings based on facts, with proof and when they actually happen. Let us forsake, once and for all, bickering and gossip. Anyone who fails to report what he/she sees and knows, is not helping a friend in need; all to the contrary, it is detrimental to everyone and this basic premise must be the cornerstone for the changes proposed. Breeders must play an active role in this new situation, but from the stance of personal commitment, from absolute involvement and from the impartiality that guides our actions. Any change needs as much consensus as much consensus as it does commitment. It is the latter that I summons from all breeders for the smooth running of our breeding activity with major repercussions for our industry. ¡¡

Conformation Competition in Norway

6

As THE PREsIDENT of the Norwegian PRE breeders’ Association and member of ANCCE, I would like to share with the Board the main problem that we face as an organizing committee abroad when it comes to arranging these shows in Norway, due to the fact the PRE herd here is still growing. The fact is that in the current situation, it is extremely expensive for us to hold a Conformation Competition under the current Rules, as we are forced to have two judges, one for the conformation test and another for functionality. Every year, we usually have less than thirty (30) horses competing and only 20-40% do the Functionality test. This means that the Functionality Judge has to stay up to three days here for the duration of the competition. I am sure that other, small European countries with a limited PRE population, experience this same problem. However, there is a need and a desire to organize these competitions as they are the only option to promote the Spanish Horse in our country. Now that the Rules & Regulations

are being changed, perhaps it is time for the ANCCE Board to assess this problem. We hope ANCCE will take this into consideration and can offer an alternative to the high costs when organizing an event with two judges. Two alternatives have occurred to me to address this problem. On the one hand, the option of a single judge for the Conformation and Functionality test. On the other hand, the list of judges could incorporate two new fields: the language or languages that that the judge speaks and his/her place of residence. In our organization, we do not have people who are familiar with the Spanish language. This makes everything more difficult for us when selecting and contracting judges. Also, knowing where the judge lives would be very useful as it would be a savings in terms of travel. It is not the same to purchase a reasonably-priced ticket from a city in Spain with a direct flight than if we have to organize flights with intermediate stops, in which case, prices spike considerably. For our association, it is very important that we promote the PRE in Norway. Within the proposed objectives, this is a major point. As stated above, the best way to promote the PRE is through competitions. For this, we have to arrange the shows at a cost that does not scare away any possible participants; a fee that is competitive for the participating breeders and enthusiasts. We hope that ANCCE will consider our proposals and help us find a solution to promote the PRE in Norway together. ¡¡ Kåre Liadal

Fighting Bulls & Noble Horses Perfect symbiosis between two species “Made in Spain”

8

The ties between fighting bulls and horses have been close-knit for centuries, whether in the form of farm work or the art of horseback bullfighting. This latter art has three players: man, horse and bull. The first two enjoy the gift of intelligence, the technique and resources, the courage and elegance while the bull provides the power and force, the fierceness and the stance. On the other hand, it is commonly stated that for mounted bullfighting, the ideal horse is one with temperament, strength, timeliness and courageousness while at the same time being good at Dressage. Although the Purebred Spanish Horse lacks the speed of other breeds, it is undoubtedly outstanding in strength and heart, which are qualities that make it one of the best adapted breeds for bullfighting on horseback. TRADITIONALLY, HORSE BREEDING has been an agricultural-related activity, used in farming and to care for fighting bulls. It is a field that covers basic animal husbandry as well the task of measuring a bull’s resistance and daringness. Bulls need to be tested; they must be selected for a given fight and loaded onto a transportation truck for the trip to the bullring. The symbiosis between both animal species could very well be symbolized by the origin of world-famous Miura cattle ranch. Legend states that the current bloodlines of today’s bulls are linked to the selection efforts of the friars at the Carthusian Monastery in Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz) and who may very well have been the first to breed fighting bulls and horses. Thus, the breeding of horses and bulls has always gone hand in hand. These two stories seem analogous to other areas, such as bullfighting on horseback or rejoneo, as it is known in Spanish. The beginnings of mounted bullfighting have been debated greatly, and are rooted in the Iberian Peninsula-Spain and Portugal--with its waring reminiscences that followed the rules of knightly combats, where nobility and daringness established the guidelines to be followed. This art reached its peak in the 18th century, going through ups and downs to even be prohibited for some time. It was in the 1920s that Cavalry Captain Antonio Cañero, heir of a family with ample equestrian tradition, decided

to fight a bull on horseback, but with the same features of a bullfighter on foot. After Spain’s Civil War (1936-1939) other mounted bullfighters followed his example, including Álvaro Domecq Diez and Angel Peralta who reached technical and artistic perfection. As this latter stated in an interview granted in Ronda (Malaga) in 1983, at the bullring: “there are three wills when there is no harmony: that of the horse, the man and the bull. For there to be art, you have to harmonize these three wills, blending them together to become one and create a centaur, a single body. Proof of this is that when man dominates the horse, he moves the horse just as he would an arm or a leg. Without even noticing, he controls the horse using his spurs, body contact or through the bit.”

“TRADITIONALLY, HORSE BREEDING HAS BEEN AN AGRICULTURAL-RELATED ACTIVITY, USED TO CARE FOR FIGHTING BULLS” The Maestros say that the best horse for bullfighting is one that has temperament, strength, timeliness and is courageous, in addition to being good at Dressage. Perhaps the Purebred Spanish Horse is not known for its speed, but undoubtedly, is the known for its strength and heart; in

fact, the PRE Horse offers the many traits demanded for bullfighting on horseback. Its courage and dedication in the ring have made it the most desirable breed in Spain and abroad, as indicated by Mexican mounted bullfighter Luis Pimentel, who states that he was “almost born on a horse” and that he has worked hard to “become a world bullfighting figure.” A few years ago and to accomplish his dream, he traveled to Spain “to learn the art of mounted bullfighting from an expert in this art, Pablo Hermoso de Mendoza.” Today, he has returned to Mexico and fights in his homeland bullrings with his PRE Recorte-N, owned by Yeguada Casco La Venta and bred by Ganadería Hermanos Nieto. He states that the breed “gives the bullfighter much more than it receives and his horses are always willing to execute the very best tasks.” Breeder Jaime Guardiola, who had first-hand knowledge about the role of PRE horses as an essential element in the care and breeding of fighting bulls, specified, “thanks to characteristics such as its versatility, kindness, noble spirit and strength, this breed is suited to both mounted bullfighting and carriage driving, as well as other disciplines, in addition to field work, as in the case when testing young bulls (acoso y derribo). This is possible because of its good reflexes and the necessary intelligence to maintain a respectful relationship with the bull.” 12

“THE PUREBRED SPANISH HORSE IS UNDOUBTEDLY BEST KNOWN FOR ITS STRENGTH AND HEART; THE PRE OFFERS AN ELEVATED NUMBER OF TRAITS DEMANDED FOR BULLFIGHTING ON HORSEBACK” Those good reflexes and intelligence are essential for a mounted bullfighter, as they help the horse to concentrate and follow the rider’s orders and avoid the bull’s onslaught. Meekness is also an important factor when in the arena. Should the horse be hit or injured by the bull, the horse must avoid quick and dangerous reactions that could affect the rider. The beauty and elegance of the PRE are not essential in this sport, but these traits do contribute to making mount bullfighting an artistic performance. TWO “MARCA ESPAÑA” SPECIES If there are animal species that are typically considered ambassadors of “Marca España” (Brand Spain), these are, above all doubts, the Purebred Spanish Horse and the fighting bull. In the case of the PRE, its intelligence, together with its nobility and fearlessness has made it a unique breed, one that is greatly appreciated by the world’s equitation elite. In addition to this, one must

“PRE BEAUTY AND ELEGANCE ARE NOT ESSENTIAL IN THIS SPORT, BUT THESE TRAITS DO CONTRIBUTE TO MAKING MOUNTED BULLFIGHTING AN ARTISTIC PERFORMANCE” consider the prestige and wealth provided by breeding. Today, and based on PRE Stud Book statistics, there are more than 220,000 PRE horses in the world, of which 75% are in Spain and the other 25% are living in more than 60 countries. As indicted in a study by Spain’s Royal Equestrian Federation, the equestrian industry generates an annual turnover of more than 5,300 million euros; it accounts for 0.51% of Spain’s GDP and it creates more than direct 61,000 jobs. Then again, tauromachy is, by nature, one of Spain’s most renowned and distinguishing traits. Spain’s bullfighting tradition is recognized well beyond its boundaries. This industry plays an important role in the country’s economy as it accounts for an annual income of 2,000 million euros, affecting mainly the tourist industry and a number of social and cultural expressions. Breeding bulls also has a positive effect on the care and growth of the forest meadows found on the Iberian Peninsula as about half a million hectares (just over 1,235,526 acres) are protected thanks

In the case of the Purebred Spanish Horse, it is said to be one of the most beautiful animals in the world, with its outstanding temperament, noble spirit and intelligence thanks to the know-how of its breeders throughout history. Such qualities are distinguishing traits of Spain’s culture and a treasure to be preserved and promoted. Outside of Spain’s borders, the PRE is one of the most appreciated equine breeds and a true ambassador for Marca España (Brand Spain). A desire shared by the entire industry is for the breed to be recognized throughout the world as it deserves, and what it is; one of the best equine breeds on earth. Marca España is a long-term project to improve Spain’s image abroad and among its citizens. From ANCCE, we are working to include the Purebred Spanish Horse in this project. 17

interview through a variety of national and international channels. Marca España is a team effort; therefore, we are continually interacting with people thanks to digital and social networks.

THE PUREBRED SPANISH HORSE IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS IN THE WORLD. ITS TEMPERAMENT, NOBLE SPIRIT AND INTELLIGENCE ARE OUTSTANDING AND IT IS ALL THANKS TO THE KNOWHOW OF ITS BREEDERS THROUGHOUT HISTORY. 18

What is Marca España? What exactly are your tasks as the government’s High Commissioner for Marca España? What does your office do? Marca España is a government policy, the objective of which is to improve Spain’s image. As the High Commissioner, it is my job to plan, promote and coordinate actions of all public and private organizations striving to promote the image of Spain. This task is performed by a multi-disciplinary team that analyzes the world’s perception of Spain and its evolution over time. Specific initiatives are developed with a number of bodies to promote the image of Spain and disseminate our country’s positive aspects

The key to the success of the PRE lies in its balance. That is why this horse is one of the most appreciated breeds in the world. In Spain, it can be found in equestrian therapies or in the recreational sector; it is used in breeding, in sports, by royalty and even by the Armed Forces or the Police. What is your vision of the Purebred Spanish Horse and its image abroad? Spanish horses are one of the most stunning animals in the world. Their temperament, noble spirit and intelligence are outstanding. These qualities are distinguishing traits of Spain’s culture and a treasure to be preserved and promoted. Outside of Spain, the breed is one of the most appreciated of all equines and a true ambassador for Marca España. In addition to Spain´s prestige for breeding and perpetuating a horse with such unique traits, one must include the wealth that it contributes to the industry; the economic impact has been calculated at 5000 million euros. PRE horses are found in more than sixty countries and in more and more far away countries due to the growing interest of emerging economies. Where does the Purebred Spanish Horse stand within the Marca España’s global strategy? How can horses promote the image of a country outside its borders? Outside of Spain, PRE horses are one of the most important and recognizable breeds. Abroad, to say that a horse is a PRE is a symbol of uncontested excellence. Within our promotional strategy, quality and excellence are key values. Spanish horses are unique as they are a value of their own worth: they are known for their work hand-in-hand with their rider, their ability to learn

dressage and their intelligence. Undoubtedly, this excellence, which has nothing to do with consumption but rather experience, is also unique within the scope of Marca España. Touring with Spanish Horses--as is the case of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art--implies disseminating an extremely beautiful experience; it is an experience that retains the identity of Spain. The Spanish saddle or riders with their colonial chaps and leggings, donned with Calañas-style caps are all staging elements that go with the Purebred Spanish Horse to make the show a truly visual jewel that persists over time. for ANccE, one of its basic pillars is the universalization of the breed. What is your opinion on the international promotional efforts carried out by ANccE, as the parent Association for the PRE throughout the world and the manager of the PRE stud Book? ANCCE’s work towards the preservation and promotion of Spain’s native breed is praiseworthy. I am well aware that the Association organizes more and more actions that focus on the international promotion of our horses, especially in emerging countries such as Russia and China, in addition to continuous participation in national and international trade shows. Moreover, the Association’s efforts at conventions, training courses with breeders and enthusiasts, and the recruitment of new breeders are all important. We also know that the ANCCE is working for the PRE horse to achieve the status as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO; obviously and for Marca España, it is a goal that we fully support.

impression of an event that has consolidated as one of the most important PRE-related events in the world? I had visited a previous edition, but that was 18 years ago; I saw for myself the enormous development in size, importance and internationalization. I was impressed by the number of foreigners at this venue, together with the many stands, exhibitors, visitors and press. It is an event that grows every year in the number of participants and visitors; this proves the interest in purebred equine breeds, and especially in the Purebred Spanish Horse. Lastly, I would like to thank ANCCE for granting us the Grandeza Pura Raza Española Award. I am honored to receive it on behalf of Marca España, because it recognizes precisely what we are trying to do: advertise the very best that Spain has to offer. The PRE Horse is among the best as a quality ambassador of Spain, a jewel that needs to be protected and promoted. ¡ ¡¡ ¡

1st National Doma Vaquera Congress in Cordoba In February, at the Royal Palace in Cordoba (known as Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos), national and international experts analyzed the present and future of Doma Vaquera with an inaugural speech titled “De la dehesa brava a la pista” (From the wild forest meadows to the arena). Joaquín Zurita, president of AADC (Andalusian Association for Field Dressage) stated that “it is a very significant equestrian discipline in Spain, one that identifies us most and that has the greatest number of enthusiasts. Proof of this is the affluence of people at the most recent National Doma Vaquera Championship held in Cordoba in October (2015), with 13,000 visitors.” The Congress was structured around four round tables, with the participation of the world’s most important Doma Vaquera representatives. These included five Champions of Spain such as Francisco Díaz, Rafael Arcos, Diego Peña, Gonzalo

Corrales and Antonio Quinta. Olympic riders Jose Antonio Garcia Mena and Rafael Soto were on-hand for the event; this latter is also the director of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez. Other participants included mounted bullfighters and specialists from the University of Cordoba School of Veterinarian Science, such as Rafael Vivo, Ana Juzado and Eduardo Agüera; breeders of a variety of breeds and Cria Caballar

Lieutenant Colonel Juan Manuel López. Zurita explained that “the objective was to provide a global vision of Doma Vaquera over three days, and to define those elements that are involved in this sport. Also, how it is covered by the media was discussed, as well as whether there is a prototype of horse for this discipline, how to face competitions in the 21st century and the influence of this discipline on other equestrian sports.” ¡¡

1st Doma Vaquera Forum/Debate This past March, at the bullring owned by the Royal Order of Chivalry in Sevilla, the 1st Doma Vaquera Forum was held. With the hall full of personalities from the world of horses and agriculture, experts and world-class Doma Vaquera figures, the first to speak was Marcelo Maestre, Royal Order of Chivalry archivist. He welcomed everyone and inaugurated the Forum. He was followed by Antonio Boza, President of the National Doma Vaquera Association, who then turned the microphone over to Joaquin Fernandez Cepedello, President of Grupo Lettera, who moderated the debate. The day began with a roundtable titled “Doma Vaquera as a social, cultural and economic expression.” Several people intervened, including Miguel Moreno, representing ANCCE, Álvaro Domecq, Jaime Guardiola, Antonio Rodríguez de la Borbolla y Vázquez, Antonio Pastor and Ignacio Valduérteles. Prior to the break, the organizers 20

honored Juan María Maestre y Lasso de la Vega. He is one of Spain’s most outstanding riders and dual champion of Doma Vaquera. The tribute was offered by Francisco Acedo, who summarized the life of this important rider, under the watchful eye of his family, with moving words.

There are many ancestors with Hierro del Bocado and Yeguada Militar bloodlines in his paternal history, while on his dam’s side of the fence there is Hierro del Escudo, also known as “Hierro de Granada.” In addition to his excellent equine ancestors, his 76 registered offspring are no less interesting and worthy of analysis. Throughout his life, Mañoso II earned many awards, but among the most outstanding was the SICAB 2001 Bronze Medal, the Silver in both 2004 and 2005 in Jerez de la Frontera and the 2005 Silver Champion of Andalusia. He was granted the Best Movement Award several times and was the Functionality winner in his section at the many competitions where he participated. Despite his age, he won the 26th Balearic Island PRE Championship, held in Inca in 2010. There, he won the title for Best Movement and Best Functionality in Section 12 (for horses seven years of age and older); he was also the Gold Medal winner and Reserve Champion of that Competition. These four awards place Mañoso II at the zenith of PRE award winners at his age; his achievements are a far from easy to surpass. ¡¡

How did you get started in the world of Purebred spanish Horses? The stud farm began with the purchase of a dressage horse named Perdigón VIII, from Los Azores stud farm, and also three fillies from the stud farm Ganadera AG in Costa Rica. With Perdigón´s passing away, who I only owned for 2 years, I imported two foals from Azores and progeny by Gnidium to breed sports horses. My daughter Cristina´s passion for dressage made me enter the equestrian world. Currently, she competes nationally and we hope that she will soon start competing internationally. We are also promoting Working Equitation (WE) in Colombia with an annual competition calendar for which we are preparing horses. How many PRE horses are there at your stud farm? Currently, the farm has 60 horses, 33 mares and 27 stallions, six of which compete in young horse Dressage classes and Prix St. Georges, while five others are in Working Equitation. In 2015, during the last national games, the Antioquia Department team—made up of four PREs—won the bronze medal. This achievement is noteworthy because they were competing against central European breeds. your best stallion/mare/foal is: My best stallion is Laurel la Devesa, bred by Yeguada la Devesa, considered APT by the Tribunal for Qualified Breeding Stock and Young Recommended Breeding Stock. other horses, which I use to achieve specific characteristics, such as Priego Azores, Taco VIII, Guapo XXXII and Fresno AYM, the latter having been bred on my stud farm. My best mare is Rebolera Azores, bred by Yeguada Azores. One of our best foals is Italo AYM, born on my stud farm four years ago. We have high hopes for his success as he is a promising foal. He has always achieved the in-hand presentation and Young Champion awards in the competitions where he has participated. What are your priorities: sports, hacking, breeding, etc.? Although my focus is on sports, I am also aware of Conformation. Our goal is to breed sports horses with excellent physical qualities, lightness and agility that are docile, noble and reliable. What does the future hold for PRE horses in your country? The future for PRE in Colombia is quite promising, both as a unique breed and as an improver for Criollo breeds. When it comes to promoting PRE horses, it is paramount to organize events such as competitions, 30

exhibitions, parades, etc., where the goodness of the Spanish Horse for dressage are shared. Colombia loves horses and we must seize this commercial opportunity to promote bolster the PRE in my country. What do you like most about the Spanish Horse? What I like most about our horses are their liveliness and intelligence, their willingness to work and their dedication, and obviously their conformation and movements. ÂĄÂĄ

thousand breeders in Spain, the ranking is led by Andalusia, Valencia and Castilla-La Mancha. All in all, there are more than thirty thousand active Purebred Spanish Horse breeders throughout the world. In the past year, there has been an 8% increase in the number of foals registered with the PRE Stud Book. As of December 31st, 11,000 new PRE foals had been registered, thus increasing the total herd numbers to surpass the 220,000 mark. Regarding other PRE Stud Book services, more than 5000 Basic Revisions were carried out and 9000 horses changed ownership. It is worth mentioning the various international trips taken by Stud Book representatives (to Russia, Greece and Peru, to mention a few) for the Revisions in the past year. This fact underlines t h e s u c c e s s o f p ro m o t i o n a l endeavors over the past years to universalize the breed. Likewise, the PRE Stud Book has participated in a number of trade fairs and conventions, has offered training courses for breeders and enthusiasts while at the same time holding meetings with collaborating national delegations and international associations covering updates and the latest Stud Book procedures. PRE Stud Book executives attended meetings with CopaCocega (EU Committee of P ro fe s s i o n a l A g ri c u l t u r a l Organizations) and the European Parliament. A number of topics were covered, including a major aspect: the 21% VAT applied to horses, the only farm species

For ANCCE, this event is an opportunity to show how it works and its objectives for the PRE Breeding Program and the Stud Book, in addition to promoting the PRE as a high performance breed for sports. In 2015, LG PRE ANCCE renewed its Quality Certification according to UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 standards. This stamp officially recognizes the excellent work performed which, at the end of the day, translates into greater efficiency and improved services for breeders of Purebred Spanish Horses the world over. ANCCE reports COMPETITIONS

Cordoba was chosen as the venue for a workshop for Conformation Judges. The Competition Commission wanted to provide judges with the latest novelties of the Rules and Regulations and the new Judging Manual. ANCCE Vice-President Pedro Vallejo and other members of the Commission were there to welcome the attendees and present the various matters. Among the most noteworthy modifications included in the Rules & Regulations to date are the new judging sheet and the drafting of a reference manual for competitions. Special emphasis was given to theoretical and practical matters. Forty-eight judges attended the workshop, which was taught by Jorge Conde, Ignacio Bravo and Francisco Peña. There were two specific units. Among other topics, the

first unit reviewed the structure of Conformation Competitions, their correct undertaking, the new judging sheet and breed quality. Unit two consisted of the individual judges pooling their knowledge to agree on scores. Pedro Vallejo expressed his appreciation that the judges attended and collaborated with this new project, as it is a priority for the current Board of Directors, who seek to adjust the industry’s demands: to have a judging framework that guarantees asepsis and fair play in judging while at the same time complying with the principles of objectivity. This is why the Judging Manual has been drafted; it will be a reference tool that provides parameters to be followed when assessing the virtues and defects seen in Purebred Spanish Horses. Training built from the hindquarters Everyone knows that the horse’s engine is in its hindquarters. However, how truly important is it that the horse pushes from behind? What do I gain from it? How is that energy transformed and what repercussions does it have? How should we organize that energy and where do we want it to go? I will try to answer all of these questions. 38

When you begin training a horse and mount it for the first time, the horse has to learn something new: how to work with our weight. Generally, in the initial stages, the rider’s weight contributes to unbalancing the horse. When learning, a horse comes to understand that part of the solution stems from pushing and modifying its center of gravity, to slowly place it in balance with the rider. During this first stage, confidence is ga i ned a nd the prel i m i na r y understanding is achieved. The horse becomes accustomed to working and it is during this time that the rider generates the desire and willingness to go forward in the horse. At that point, we enter a second phase, which is “the development of the motor power.” What is the idea behind this phase? By making the horse perform from its hindquarters, you will be able to channel the energy generated. This vitality passes through a flexible and elastic back, to finish in the hand, creating a soft and stable contact, which is also light. Before abandoning the initial stage, a half-halt is learned. Although the horse during those first stages still has its center of gravity towards its forehand, you will already be asking it to go forwards. This will, on occasions, translate into speed--an increase in the tempo--and on others into effort. Logically, you want power, a concept that will take time for the young horse to understand. When the horse, trying its best to comply with the rider’s requests, gives you speed instead of power and effort, you need to perform a halfhalt. This lowers the tempo--teaching the horse to wait--helping it to gain balance and once again asking it to push. Gradually, the horse will understand that its hindquarters are not only used to move it from place to place, but also that they should be used to provide power. Moreover, the horse will find movement less difficult when its body is in balance and its center of gravity becomes more in-line with that of its rider. In this second stage, the horse,

after working for some time, has strengthened its muscles, not only those used for propulsion, but also the dorsal and abdominal muscles (remember that when it comes to strength, in the best of cases, it will be three or four months before the first results will appear). Your horse will have learned how to work with a lack of tension, with flexibility and with freedom of movement; good contact will have been established and the horse will have begun to be connected. Lastly, your horse will be working somewhat straighter and more in balance. This leads to all its musculature, and especially the chain of muscles forming its upper line, to become permeable and allowing the energy to flow from the engine to the steering mechanism, thus causing the power generated to be used suitably. A ny tension-resista nce t hat occurs in a joint or muscular group will work as a brake and interrupt its impulsion. It is difficult, therefore, to separate the concept of going forward from connection, a lack of tension, freedom of movement, etc. Within this concept of maximizing the energy produced, permeability is essential. Undoubtedly, working the back is the most complex aspect to achieve

when riding a horse. The concept of gymnastics for the integrated exercise of muscles, work to come and go in an effort to provide freedom of movement, the introduction of weight-carrying at the appropriate moment in the process are all key to avoid generating blockage in the top line and to strengthen the horse’s abdominal musculature. With the whole process of losing tension occurring in a positive way, impulsion will come, together with hindquarters that are more useful day after day. It all contributes to the combined capacity for engagement, becoming round, carrying out the exercises with ease, having the horse in front of the aids, with expression, ease of handling, comfort and speed. What are the consequences of not proceeding as described? If the horse doesn’t work from behind or if its top line is sufficiently rigid or disconnected, you will have a horse lack i ng i mpu lsion a nd activity; it is as if its hindquarters “were in another county.” What is absolutely clear is that in the medium-term, the consequences are even worse, as an erroneous training system creates horses that are more difficult to handle. There are also 40

IN PRE HORSES, THE COMBINATION OF GOOD BALANCE AND STRENGTH THAT APPEAR THROUGH TRAINING, GIVES YOUR PRE THE LONG-TERM CAPACITY TO SUPPORT ITSELF possible physical consequences or deter iorat ion of the horse’s mechanics within the paces. Purebred Spanish Horses are, in general, load-bearing animals. It is true that it develops slowly and later than other breeds; this means that during the training process, when but three and a half years old, they are still somewhat immature and this is the case until they are approximately four and a half years old. During these preliminary stages, it is unlikely that they show their full strength; therefore, accelerating the process is a mistake. Patience should be shown; things need to be done correctly. When you begin to see results, the combination of good balance and strength that appear through training, gives your PRE the long-term a capacity to support itself. That is a guarantee for a great future both in sports and recreational activities. ¡¡

With these improvised verses I would like to begin this article about Spanish High School, for which the Purebred Spanish horse has natural elegance of movement. Based on my own experience, it is the ideal breed for this discipline. “I can still remember those horses I loved to ride when I was a ten-yearold boy. Things were different then; I could make mistakes; they were easy to ride and easier to handle; they were always willing to work. So that is exactly what the Purebred Spanish Horses making up the beginner team were like at the riding school where I rode daily. Genetically, a high percentage of PREs are born with very good balance between fear (survival instinct) and confidence; consequently respect arises. It is this virtue that emphasizes their noble spirit and willingness to learn. Over and above this good nature, PRE horses have sufficient character to give their all in an energetic and expressive manner. They are artists; they put up with the difficulties and submission required for the discipline, from a high level Grand Prix to working on long reins, and even the difficult Aires above the Ground of Spanish High School. But PREs are also gifted for transmission, thanks to the elevated movements of their limbs. In general, Purebred Spanish Horses have the ideal conformation for exercises that demand maximum collection. They have high and arched necks, broad hindquarters and strong yet extremely flexible limbs. Based on my own experience, and contrary to certain considerations regarding the strength of the PRE, I conclude that due to the mechanics of their movements, they have developed more in the use of load bearing capacity (support) than in driving force (thrust). This means that they require specific training and

gymnastics to prepare them to better use their power; this facilitates the appropriate use of each body area to then develop the correct locomotion demanded by dressage. The breed continues to evolve and develop with new techniques thanks to the riders and selective breeding being more and more precise. In fact, evermore and better PRE horses are seen in the arenas performing Spanish High School. The Spanish horse is an exceptional asset at the most prestigious international riding schools. It is the soul behind the Royal Andalusian Riding School for Equestrian Art in Jerez. PRE genes are the foundation for the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and the Portuguese

Riding School for Equestrian Art just outside Lisbon. Considering the diversity of uses that horses have provided throughout history and the tireless search for the perfect horse for one or another activity, the PRE has always remained at the top of the list, century after century. Perhaps the explanation could be found in certain aspects that are intrinsic to the breed and the reason why Purebred Spanish Horses have been and continue to be envied and praised by everyone: their noble spirit, their willingness and elegance are but a few of the qualities that come to mind. They are horses that know their worth and are sure of themselves in any situation. This accents their virtues, subtly hiding any flaws by means of harmonious and eyecatching movements and with a certain air of cockiness. This is something non-existent in other 46

breeds which, although they perform very correct movements, lack the grace and self-confidence found in the Purebred Spanish Horse: an authentic horse, one that is loved and undoubtedly admired by all. ¡¡

THE OLD PATHWAYS foraged and hardened by the passing of hooves are now some of the most important pilgrimages routes of Europe. One of the most important relics of Christianity can be found at the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana: the largest piece of the Lignum Crucis or the True Cross. It is not just a matter of religion; the surroundings teach you to believe in nature’s many other energies. Interestingly, Cantabria is the only region of the Christian world that has two pilgrimage routes. On the one hand, there is the northern route leading to Santiago that passes through a number of municipalities, including Castro Urdiales, Laredo, Santoña, Santillana del Mar, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera. On the other hand, there is the Liebana Route, which we recommend following on horseback from the town of Liebana. This is a journey with a thousand colors that range from the intense blues of the Cantabrian Sea to the lush greens of the Liebana valley. Beaches, forests, manor houses and the odd farm yard here and there up on the mountain slopes. The landscape symbolizes the perfect northern location that comes to mind when thinking about vacations. A Purebred Spanish Horse is perfect for this route. Its balanced character allows you to

easily ride all such terrain. PREs walk up steep slopes to venture into the thick forest, which is just as important as being able to tie the reins to the branch of a beech tree or stop and rest to contemplate the other side of the valley. Equestrian tourism enthusiasts know that PRE horses are highly versatile. Their temperament, friendliness and easy handling make them ideal for long routes along paths that vary with the terrain. The Aravalle Equestrian Center offers all-inclusive packages, with a guide, horse, accommodations, support vehicle and liability insurance. Thanks to this, you can follow the entire Liebana Route, mounted on a beautiful horse. The organizing firm is located just six km (just over 3.5 miles) from the town of Potes, at the foot of the Eastern massif of the Picos de Europa mountains, thus making it the ideal starting point for a wide range of day trips. If you prefer, you can use your own horse, in which case the organizers provide stabling and the rest of the adventure. The horserider connection is a personal matter. The “official” Liebana Route offers major variations through the Liebana Valley; they all start in San Vicente de la Barquera to finish at the Monastery of Santo Toribio. While travelling, riders pass through a number of

49

equestrian route

towns and hamlets after leaving San Vicente de la Barquera, to continue to Val de San Vicente, Herrerías, Lamasón, Peñarrubia, Cillorigo, Potes and Camaleño. As always with such routes, they are peppered with numerous historic references that vouch the existence of major trails to the saint’s renowned Monastery of the Saint Toribio. The start could be no better. In San Vicente de la Barquera a number of signs indicate the route with the words “Camino Lebaniego”. One of the most outstanding examples of Gothic art in Cantabria appears as the church of Santa María de los Ángeles (St. Mary of the Angels) come into view, nestled up in the highlands of the borough of San Vicente de la Barquera. Adjacent is a lodge for exclusive use by pilgrims on both routes. Nearby are the remains of the 15th to 16th century Hospital de la Concepción that once served as refuge for midlevel travelers. The sites of San Vicente’s old city are superlative. On clear days, you can see as far away as the Naranjo de 50

A PUREBRED SPANISH HORSE IS PERFECT FOR THIS ROUTE. ITS BALANCED CHARACTER ALLOWS YOU TO EASILY RIDE ACROSS THE VARIED TERRAIN

Bulnes mountain peak, thus creating the perfect backdrop for the journey. With this setting, our PRE will truly enjoy galloping along the empty beaches. Today, the signage considers these pathways as short routes within the network of Liebana Trails. Whatever the chosen route, the landscape of the Picos de Europa and Cantabrian Mountains surrounding the valley is impressive and conditions the access to the Monastery. The strength and force of the countryside seems to willingly accept the many hamlets that are home to architectural treasures, forming the heritage of the people of Cantabria.

The Aravalle Equestrian Center knows this better than anyone else. Andrea, the enterprising spirit, reminds riders where they are and the importance of the route. Pilgrims taking the Liebana Route recognize it thanks to the maroon cross, which at certain milestones is often accompanied with the traditional yellow arrow and the St. James Way seashell, as there are sections shared by pilgrims travelling to the city of Santiago de Compostela. It is a magical location, where PRE horses show their versatility and balance. Our beloved horses express their intelligence and willingness to work. Moreover, they are grateful steeds that give their all and enjoy what they are doing. The ultimate reward is reaching the Saint Toribio de Liebana Monastery. To reach the final destination, it is a matter of riding through places that neither you nor your horses will ever forget. No doubt, there will be a whinny or two when riding along the new Nansa River trail. There is

an alternative route for horses. It is magical as you ride among the trees, over the wooden bridges from where you see three fishing huts and Poet’s Lookout (Mirador del Poeta). In the 8th century, the Cabanzón Tower was a defensive bastion; today, the walls repaired in the 15th century are visible, which is enough to remind you of complicated Medieval times. The Cades ironworks is a mandatory stop, as it provides easy access for a quick break and the end of the initial phase. Its inhabitants showed their ingenuity in the 18th century by building a milling system as part of the foundry, which you can visit. Water was taken from the Nansa River, coming from a thousand meters above sea level; it was channeled to operate a couple of flour mills and the foundry itself. The owner’s stately house, the bakery and the foundry were built in 1752.

IT IS A MAGICAL LOCATION, WHERE PRE HORSES SHOW THEIR INTELLIGENCE AND WILLINGNESS TO WORK. MOREOVER, THEY ARE GRATEFUL STEEDS THAT GIVE THEIR ALL AND ENJOY WHAT THEY ARE DOING

Riders fill their “saddlebags” with excitement as they view the Mirador de Santa Catalina (Vintage Point), just three kilometers (just under 2 miles) away from Cicera, or the forest of the Flanco Canal. You can even return to the old Collado de Arceón trail after taking a steep slope up to the spring, nestled among chestnut and oak trees. You are now 970 meters (3182 feet) above sea level, where the view--fog willing--opens onto mountainous fields. The horizon offers striking views: the La Hermida gorge flanked by the Macizo Oriental (Ándara) of the Picos de Europa Mountains. Potes provides that aristocratic touch. This town is located on the convergence of the Deva and Quiviesa rivers and is the capital of the Liebana Valley. The area has its own, unique microclimate and architectural heritage that is second to none. The 15th century tower known as Torre del Infantado is outstanding; previously, it was the home of the Marques of Santillana. There are other important towers such as those of Orejón de la Lama, Calseco, Linares and Osorio, two 52

Potes retains its medieval charm from the days when it was considerably important, with its lovely village center being an enjoyable resting site prior to the difficult climb up to the Monastery to conclude the Liebana Route. Currently governed by Franciscans, Monastic history dates back to the dark ages of the Reconquest. Some thank St. Toribio of Palencia, while others state that St. Toribio of Astorga-although not confirmed--chose the

site to house a relic brought from the Holy Land: a piece of the Cross of Christ. This relic is the largest known piece of the cross; based on Carbon 14 testing, it is from a tree growing at the time of Jesus and it legitimizes history for the Catholic Church. Time has taken its toll on the Monastery, which has led to multiple reforms, even having been relaunched in 1961. Nevertheless, its importance as a site for pilgrimages has persisted over time, as has the tradition of solemnly opening its huge Door of Forgiveness (known as Puerta del Perdón) to welcome pilgrims in Jubilee years. 2017 is the next Jubilee Year. The horses seem to sense that the journey is almost over. Both horse and rider must now prove their physical worth. The forest grows denser and wilder. Upon reaching that last highpoint, before unfastening your horse’s girth straps in front of the Door of Forgiveness, you are gifted with a wonderfully impressive view. However, the satisfaction of having surpasses the challenge is much more personal. ¡¡

national associations CAdiz

New 2016 activity program 2016

T

hanks to its continued efforts to promote the Purebred Spanish Horse, ACCPREC has designed a new activity program for its members. The first step was to invite all PRE breeders in Cadiz to unite as one; as a unified group, they are more efficient to defend their interests and therefore express their support for the PRE horse in the light of any actions or situation that might arise. Eat the meetings with members, the board insists that the prestige of the PRE horse in the province is something that cannot be lost. In this case, it recommends that breeders continue breeding horses that are known for their quality; horses that represent the breed at its maximum level wherever presented or participating in events on national or international markets. This would then derive in greater commercial value for those same products. One of the actions established within the framework of the activity program is to facilitate the possible sales of horses through the association. An email has been created, available to breeders, where they can inform about horses

for sale so that the association forwards that information to specialized brokers and possible customers interested in purchasing these horses. Regarding aid to promote horses, whether breeding, dressage or sports, the association has created a communication line with its members to report about aspects relative to subsidies for competitions and tests, as well as requests formulated by national bodies (Federations, National Associations, Ministry of Agriculture, General Breeding Office, etc.) so that breeders are in a position to take advantage of any possible aid. With this, they seek to spark interest in the horse; since the onset of the crisis and in this specific area of Spain, the sector is sadly unmotivated. In addition to these activities, the association is planning to offer conferences as well as informative and cultural talks about the history of the Purebred Spanish Horse in the province of Cadiz. The idea is for breeders and enthusiasts to learn about the breed’s origins, competition rules and regulations and basic instructions for participants in the sector, and all by well-known professionals in the various topics. ¡¡

Azor, assistant technical director of the PRE Stud Book and the person responsible for the PRE Breeding Program. PRECVAL represents the equine industry in the Region of Valencia. The mission of the conference, given in the auditorium of AVA-ASAJA (the Valencian Farmer’s Association), was to inform breeders about the newest legislation that affects the identification of equines within the European Union as of 2016. Also, he reported about the census and explained the main procedures to following when using Stud Book services. He stressed the importance of aspects regarding the registration of foals, surrogate mares, registration deadlines, past deadline registrations, what happens when 54

registering horses for breeding and production, the RIIA data base, changes of ownership, etc. When it comes to the Breeding Program, he explained the current situation for each phase of the program. He explained about horses involved in performance tests, both the Lineal Conformation Score (LCS) (more than 16,000 horses from 5500 stud farms) as well as in Dressage (more than 6000 verifications), and horses currently being assessed genetically (more than 47,000 for LCS and more than 11,000 for Dressage). He discussed the interpretation and how to use the catalog of breeding stock and its application as a tool to select breeding horses based on the individual needs and objectives of each breeder. Staff from the Valencian Regional Ministry of Agriculture and numerous PRE breeders from the region took advantage of the conference to ask questions about the latest legislation and the PRE Breeding Program. ¡¡

PRE Horse festival in Wellington

T

he United States, with the second largest herd of Purebred Spanish Horses in the world, honored the breed with the 2016 USPRE Week, in Wellington, Florida. It is the greatest, state-side equestrian experience for both members of the United States PRE Association as well as for PRE enthusiasts. Breeders from far and wide met for five days to share in a variety of activities seeking to establish relationships, share expertise and present the beauty, versatility and talent of the PRE horse. The first activity on the program for members and guests was the welcome cocktail at the White Horse Taverns. Breeders Enrique de Benito, Amador Alonso, Félix Reigia, Jaime Amián, Patricia Sánchez, Jacqueline and Liam Cuddy, Belinda Nairn, Lee Burton, Terry Whaechter, William Taylor, Adrienne La Far, Shelly Pritchard and family, Walter Hensley, Betsy Bougie, Shaana Riley, Jane Bistline and Janne Rumbough, among others, were on hand and of course, the USPRE President Kimberly Van Kampen Boyer together with the executive secretary of ANCCE, Manuel González. Continuing with the activity program on the second day, a brief training session was offered at the Mitca Farm facilities at the hand of Tanya Duffey, who is responsible for the PRE Stud Book in the US. She provided information about the process to participate in the Tribunals for Qualified

Breeding Stock. Then, Tom Reed with the PRE Armas Zumbel, showed the most important aspects when presenting a horse before the Tribunal, underscoring the importance of the length of stride in the movements and the freedom of the shoulders. In the afternoon, the USPRE Party—the greatest event of the year—began with the participation of five important horses and riders, who participated in a variety of categories in the covered Van Kampen arena at Adequan Global Dressage. First to enter the arena was Jacqueline Cuddy riding Malcarat, twice champion of the USPRE Cup. She performed an impressive Kür Grand Prix test. She was followed by Debra Cooper and her horse TB Xochimilco, who delighted the audience with a sample of Western riding, accompanied by singer Jenna Wyatt. Kerrigan Gluch riding HGF Brío followed suit, to perform freestyle with exercises for Young Riders to the rhythm of Sky Full of Stars by ColdPlay. Lastly, female riders Janne Rumboug with Junior, and Emily Copeland with Festivo RS entered the arena. Both horses are progeny of renowned sire stallion Gaucho III. Once the exhibitions concluded, and with the marquee full, USPRE rendered honors to legendary equine athletes such as Invasor, Distinguido, Evento, Norte Lovera, G-Nidium, Oleaje, Fuego de Cárdenas and Grandioso. Manuel Muñoz was given a statuette to honor his international Dressage career with his horse Fuego de Cárdenas. Finally, tribute was rendered to the first Purebred Spanish Horse imported to the United States—Gaucho III, owned by Janne Rumbough. Continuing with the established agenda, a round table was organized with breeders to discuss topics of interest. These topics led to an interesting and instructive debate for all those in attendance. Topics included PRE history and stud farm values, the role of the mare when breeding and the selection of bloodlines, among others. At the Gala Dinner, held at the International Polo Club, Manolo González, the ANCCE executive secretary, read a few words on behalf of President Juan Tirado. He underlined the great work performed by USPRE as a PRE Association in the US and its magnificent efforts to promote the breed throughout the country. Kim Boyer, on the other hand, presented the new USPRE digital catalog, the new social network for PRE enthusiasts. She then proceeded to present a number of awards, including Member of the Year, Breeder of the Year, Equestrian of the Year, HorseRider Combination of the Year, Mare and Sire Stallion of the year and the Functionality Award. USPRE sponsorship of the Kür Grand Prix for the international Dressage competition, Adequan Global Dressage Festival, translated into wonderful promotion of the Purebred Spanish Horse. USPRE prepared a special stand for Association members from where they could enjoy this magnificent event. The final activity on the program was the four clinics with Juan Manuel Muñoz. Two were for young horses and two for adult horses that counted on the participation of a son of Norte, ridden by Beatrice Boucher, and a daughter of Bolero CXVLIII, ridden by Maria Lithander, Armas Zumbel and Quintanillo. ¡¡ 57
