Letter from the President
Once again, on the last Sunday of November, SICAB closed its doors. For a full six days, we enjoyed the best examples of the breed, both from the conformation and competitive point of view. After more than ten years, Her Royal Highness, Infanta Elena, Princess of Spain and Honorary President of SICAB, accompanied us for this year’s inauguration. The importance of Mexico in the PRE breeding world has been recognized; we have paid tribute to their work, which in many cases goes unknown, and to the many people, whether they are breeders or not, who work for the PRE Horse. The image of the PRE has been promoted at a variety of levels, commercial transactions have taken place and above all, after a year, we have returned to meet and enjoy ourselves with friends to share our interests and business. Thanks to the Internet, we have launched live broadcasts of SICAB with more than one million hits at the www.sicab.tv web-site. This goes to show the success of this initiative, which will be repeated in future years given the significance of these results. We must be very thankful that SICAB has gone back to normal; the reports received confirm that incidents were minimal and even so, those that did arise will be transferred to the Association disciplinary organs so that measures can be taken, as would be necessary. However, there are some things that were not so positive; we have made some mistakes, for which we apologize. The computer back-up and the presentation of the conformation competition results failed to meet our expectations, especially on the first day. These problems were solved as the conformation competition proceeded and everything worked out. Even so, I would like to take advantage of this letter to thank the many participating breeders for their understanding and collaboration with the people who were working very hard on the technical aspects, as well as those whose enormous efforts to ensure that everything worked correctly.
We are already working on next year’s SICAB, to resolve both the smaller aspects of the event and adjust others. Likewise, we are concerned about the on-going construction at the fair grounds and the parking areas around the FIBES Convention Center as the measures taken this year were not as effective as we had been assured they would be. For an event this SICAB, access and the parking for the transport of the participating horses, breeders, exhibitors and visitors is fundamental. On the other hand, the new rules and regulations will enable us to modify the modus operandi of the Spanish National Championship Finals in the hope to make them more flexible, attractive and exciting. We would like to give more importance to the various equestrian competitive disciplines than what they currently have and introduce indepth reforms for, among others, the weekend program. We continue to work (this is not exclusive to SICAB) on improving the computer applications and access so that breeders may consult and be informed of what happens at any given competition, as well as other information required of any participating horse. Changes in the format are required as well as the introduction of other adjustments; improvement is essential. We have to develop and avoid stagnation by holding tight to the past, and this will be done. Javier Conde Cerrato President of ANCCE

CHANGES ON THE COLLEGIAL ASSOCIATION OF PRE JUDGES BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Antonio Vazquez, Secretary-Treasurer, Diego Marín, President & Luis Lucio, Member
On Friday, the 28th of November, as has become customary, at the Mezquita Room of the Fibes Congress Center facilities, and coinciding with SICAB 2008, the Ordinary Assembly of the Collegial Association of PRE Judges (ACOJCPRE) was held. During the meeting, a report was given by the President, Diego Marín Fidalgo, who reviewed all the events that have taken place since the last Assembly, as well as the various actions taken by the Association and the current situation of the PRE Horse sector. He highlighted the good relationship with ANCCE, as well as encouraging all the PRE judges to join and register the fact that this Association is the only one in existence. Subsequently, the Assembly ratified the new changes in the composition of the Board of Directors, as is detailed below: President: Diego Marín Fidalgo. Vice-president: José Artillo Cano. Secretary: Antonio Vázquez Fernández. Treasurer: Antonio Vázquez Fernández Members: Luís Lucio Pérez. Vicente Granell Ivorra. Alberto Tabernero Redondo. And lastly, at the conclusion of the assembly, the Honorary Judges were appointed, along with the presentation of plaques, this year these went to: Ignacio Ansaldo and Bernaldo de Quiros. Ángel González Niño. Tomás del Cojo Moreno. Ignacio Bravo Martínez. This year, there was the added sadness due to the passing away of Ignacio Ansaldo and Ángel González Niño. From here, and at this difficult time, we would like to thank, once again, their widows and families, for the effort of being present.

CLINIC WITH THE NATIONAL SELECTOR, JAN NIVELLE Jan Nivelle, the current national manager for Young Riders in the discipline of Dressage, held a clinic on the 18th and 19th of December in the facilities of Dos Lunas, in San Martin del Tesorillo (Cadiz). The seven most outstanding horses and riders in the most recent competitions in the categories of 15 to 18 year-olds and Young Riders took part, among these was a PRE ridden by Beatriz Robert Samper, Guajiro XXVI, who was bred by Mario Torio and is owned by JosĂŠ
A. Bautista. He will compete in the category of 15 to 18 year-olds next year. During the two-day event, Nivelle studied the horses and guided the riders and their trainers in the work to be carried out to achieve a better performance. The next date in the competition arenas will be at Montemedio, at the end of February, during the International Sunshine Tour, where the young riders from Spain will have to compare with those from other countries. Good luck to everyone!

THE INTERNATIONAL EQUINE WORKSHOP IN SEVILLA The animal feed brand, Nutrimentos Purina, organized an International Equine Workshop in Sevilla, from the 1st to 3rd of December. For three days, the attendees and presenters, who came from Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico and the United States, exchanged experiences and ideas about equine nutrition and training activities. This is the first time that an equine feed company has organized a circuit of conferences about equine
nutrition using the ‘Webinar' method, which enables presenters, scientific and equine nutritionists from the best universities in the world (Dr. Potter, Texas; Dr. Rodiek, Fresno, Dr. Nielsen, Michigan; Dr. Hoffman, Virginia) to be present by remote communication. The International Equine Workshop served as a thread of continuation at SICAB 2008, where, for yet another year, Nutrimentos Purina were the official sponsor for the feeding of the horses at the fair.

The
O f f i c i a l Inauguration of the 18th edition of the International PRE Fair (SICAB)—dedicated this year to Mexico—was held on the 25th of November, at 7.45 in the evening, which officially opened the gates to a full week of work, expectation and effort by the organization and all the breeders hoping to win well-deserved prizes following a year of constant work. This year the Inauguration was presided over by Her Royal Highness, Infanta Elena, Princess of Spain and Honorary President of SICAB since 1991, although she has not attended an inauguration for more than ten years. Upon arrival at Fibes Convention Center, the Princess was received by the Andalusian Regional Minister of Agriculture, Martin Soler, the Mayor of Sevilla, Alfredo Sánchez Monteseirín, and the President of the National PRE Breeders’ Association (ANCCE), Javier Conde, as well as authorities from Mexico, among others. After greeting several ANCCE directors, breeder, Álvaro Domecq, with whom she has close ties, presented the Princess with a bronze, as a souvenir of a SICAB with a Mexican fling, all under the watchful eyes of the Mexican Secretary of Agriculture, Jorge Rueda, their Ambassador in Spain, Jorge Zermeño, and the Sevilla City Alderwoman for Festivities, Rosamar Prieto-Castro, members of the organization and, specifically, the presidents of the two Mexican PRE Associations, Joaquín Quintana, and Victor González de Pablo. Following this event, the cortege moved on to Pavilion III, where they enjoyed the Show, “Caballos Egregios”. Prior to this Show, and as established by protocol, the National Mounted Police and three very young riders with PRE Horses, holding the flags of Spain, Mexico and Andalusia, greeted Princess Elena to the arena. The Sevilla Municipal Band of Music played the Royal March and the Mexican and Andalusian national anthems. This welcome concluded with the emblematic "Giralda," a paso doble dance melody, which opened the way for the Show. This eighteenth Show included performances from a variety of countries, with riders from France, Italy, Spain and Mexico traveling to Sevilla to ensure the success. Logically, at this inaugural Show, on this first day, the seating and stands were packed full.

T
his 18th edition of SICAB was dedicated to Mexico. There are several reasons why the organizers reached this decision, but the fundamental reason was the warm and durable relationship that has, for years, existed between ANCCE and the Mexican associations. These organizations are totally dedicated to the PRE Horse. Likewise, the fact that Mexico is the country that registers the most PREs in the LG-PRE-ANCCE Stud Book behind Spain—in other words, it is the country with the largest number of PRE horses outside of Spain—was also taken into consideration. The relationship between Spain and Mexico is privileged and enriching, due to the cooperation between both countries, therefore, ANCCE wanted to pay tribute to this fact, and decided to dedicate SICAB this year to the Aztec country.

here were fifty-six participants in the youngest section for mares. There might very well be surprises in these sections; in fact the criteria of the judges differed greatly. MENTA M SUAY (by ARTISTA M SUAY, out of AGUARDIENTE M SUAY), owned by Rafael Martínez Suay in Valencina, was the winner of the two year-old fillies with a score of 80.827. According to Luis Lucio, she was the best, while Juan Lecina and Francisco Javier García Romero relegated her to third place. She also had the Best Movement with a score of 8.488, with an excellent walk. This expressive filly is promising, as at CONCAB—which could be called the rehearsal for SICAB—she had already run-off with the gold. MATAFALUGA harvested the silver medal with 80.007. She is a daughter of LIBERADO III and SALVADORA; both qualified breeding stock, bred by Pallarés. She was very closely followed by LLANISCA II, owned by Yeguada Los Corrales (79.973). She is a direct
descendant of ERMITAÑO III, bred by Maria Fernanda de la Escalera, a pioneering dressage horse in Spain, whose competition career concluded by winning the Annual Award granted by the Spanish Equestrian Federation to young horses. MAR MAYNOU, owned by Yeguada Casanova is wellknown in competition arenas. Since her debut last year, she has always achieved very good results. On this occasion, the daughter of CAMPERO XXI, owned by Cubas, took fourth place. Another filly, MARA M SUAY, a sister of the sire of the winner MENTA M SUAY owned by Rafael Martínez Suay took the fifth place. The honorary mentions must not be forgotten, those in 6th to 10th place respectively were QUELIDONA DE YMAS, owned by Yeguada Ymas; ESPAÑOLA MH, owned by Yeguada Vinyet; INVITADA JF, owned by Yeguada J.F. his section inaugurated SICAB and boasted the largest number of participants—fifty-seven in all. The low scores received was noticeable, the same as in the section for two year-old fillies, with disparities among the judges being remarkable. The highest score, 78.750, was given to MONTES II, bred and owned by Dehesa de Cabeza Rubia. He stands out for his head, neck and croup. He is a son of the Champion of Functionality of SICAB 2007, ARMAS TARUGA, and of HAZA, both qualified breeding stock. YACO AV, bred by Yeguada Aguilar Velasco and owned by Yeguada Gala, with 78.533 earned second place. He is a son of YACO II, owned by Marín García and OJERA II bred by Benito Sierra. This grey stood out considerably over the rest for his movement to receive a score of 8.325. He was the only horse in the section who received more than an 8 in this part. COQUETO R H, bred and owned by Tomás Osborne was on the lowest step of the podium. This son of PODEROSO VI, owned by Pallarés, received a score of 78.513 from the judges, who were Francisco Hernández, Javier Bayo and Saúl Dávalos for this section. On his dam’s side, we find COQUETA XXXVI, who is, in turn, a daughter
of MAROMITO V, owned by Salvador Guardiola. Both these horses are qualified breeding stock. It must be highlighted that according to Javier Bayo and Saúl Dávalos, he was the best in the section, while Francisco Hernández located him in thirtieth place. Fourth place went to REBOTE AV, owned by Agricola Valvi. On his sire’s side is ALBERO II, owned by Paco Lazo, who in turn descends from well-known CESAR and MALUSO with Military Stud farm origins. Fifth place—and the last to receive a trophy—went to MOLINERO HBM II, owned by Yeguada Peña, bred by Hermanos Benítez. His forbears include the line of Educados, owned by Salvador Guardiola, all coming from EDUCADA III, a mare who has, in her genealogy, the so-called fathers of the breed, such as BILBAÍNO III and MALUSO, on his dam’s side. While on his sire’s side, the linage goes back to CENTELLA V, also of Salvador Guardiola. ATLÁNTICO PAL, owned by Villanueva Dacasa; LORITO II, owned by Urquijo; JEREZANO MANGO II, owned by Yeguada Mile; TARUGO LP, owned by Lovera; and PILATOS II, owned by Mª Fernanda de la Escalera received honorary mentions, in that order.

f the fifty-one contestants in this section, the names of the favorites were already sounding well before the start. Among these was LAGARTERA XI, owned by Yeguada Díaz Renedo, who last year took the Youngstock Filly Championship home to Valladolid. This filly, bred by Dehesa de Cabeza Rubia, daughter of the horses from the same stud farm, GUARDADAMAS I (qualified stallion and son of the qualified and meritorious ATIZA II, owned by Solera Bravo, within whose brilliant record stands-out his Stallion Breed Championship at SICAB in 1999 and at the 2004 ANCCE Cup Championship for Dressage in the Kür Grand Prix, to mention a couple of his numerous dressage awards. He is, in turn, a son of BINGUERO, owned by Señorio de Bahrain). Everyone falls in love with the class of this three-year-old. She has a very good top line. Since her debut in 2007, she has always achieved excellent results, and this year great things were expected. You must only mention the five Stallion Breed Championships and one Reserve that she has achieved this season. It went as was expected, and she proved to be the best three year-old filly. However, she was only placed first by Saúl Dávalos. Victor Huertas and Javier Bayo went for NIÑERA RAM,
owned by Ayala, who took the silver. This is a very tall filly, with good substance, and with a good forehand. She was a great rival to LAGARTERA XI. This black filly, who is a granddaughter of EDUCADO X, was awarded a score of 81.409, against the 81.562 of LAGARTERA XI. And the genes of EDUCADO X were also present in the filly who took the bronze. NADADORA RAM, daughter of this mythical horse. This grey qualified filly is owned by the stud farm, Mater Christi in Avila. AIROSA CXXI, owned by Can Maynou, bred by Yeguada Piñero, remained just off the podium, as did ENAMORADA FA, bred by Francisco Álvarez, owned by Yeguada Albert Boya. These took fourth and fifth place respectively. Honorary Mentions went to ESTUPENDA FA, owned by San Fernando-La Macarena; INDIA M SUAY, owned by Rafael Marínez Suay, who, in addition, was awarded the prize for best movement with a score of 8.617; SEDUCTORA SALVATELLA II, owned by VelascoGonzález; LEGADA DE MILLÁN, owned by Millán Herce; and UNIVERSITARIA XIV, owned by Francisco Santiago Ruiz.

UQUE CXIII, owned by Yeguada Las Arenas, another son of EDUCADO X, well harmonized and with a good shoulder, thorax and croup. He was the favorite and his victory was very clear. His victories in the conformation arenas have always been regular. He stood above the others with a score of 81.267. In this section Javier Bayo put him first; Juan Lecina, second; and Francisco Javier García Romero, seventh.
JUGLAR XXVI, owned by Yeguada Bautista Vich, received 80.476 points, and took the silver. The bronze went to AFRICANO RAM, owned by Yeguada Díaz Renedo. He is a son of AFRICANA XXXI, owned by Ayala and DESEADO LXXXVII, bred by Francisco Santiago. Fourth place went to JEREZANO MANGO, owned by Yeguada Mile, bred by Andic. ESORO XI captivated the judges in this small section of twenty-seven participants. Daughter of YACO II, who, in turn, is son of PAMPERO V and YACA III. All of these carry a Marín García brand. This mare, bred by Benito Sierra, owned by Yeguada Gala, has won numerous awards, a fact that made her favorite at this competition. She took the top place on the podium with a score that was well above the rest, 81.909. The judges who judged this section (Javier Bayo, Juan Lecina and Sául Dávalos) were unanimous and all put her in first place.
Fourth place went to ALHAMBRA XXI, owned by Can Maynou, bred by Hermanos Marín Rodríguez, descendant of MALUSO of Military Stud farm origins. Fifth place went to the qualified mare, granddaughter of EDUCADO X, MARCHADORA RAM, owned by Mater Christi.
LShe was followed by VIKINGA MT, owned by Urquijo, bred by Miguel Tovar, with a score of 80.576; she is a descendant of QUÍMICO, owned by Francisco FdezDaza. JUNCOSA V, owned by Albert Boya, with a Miguel Bohórquez brand, received the bronze; she is a granddaughter of the stallion that was 2005 Champion of Spain, RONDEÑO IX. This qualified horse, who in turn is son of LEBRIJANO III, of Military Stud farm origins, received 80.439 points.
Honorary Mentions went to MALVINA RAM, owned by Díaz Renedo; AMBICIOSA DE SALVATELLA, owned by Velasco-González; MACETERA RAM, owned by Ayala; MANIJERA RAM, owned by San Fernando-La Macarena and AVISPADA SALVATELLA, owned by Velasco-González.
The movement that the judges most liked was that of GALANA JF. This mare, owned by Yeguada JF Miño and with plenty of José Luis de la Escalera origins, was awarded 8.100 points.

hirty-three horses participated in this section where BRASILEÑO VII was most outstanding. He was bred and is owned by the Catalan stud farm belonging to Juan Vázquez. He is a son of FLAMENCO XII, owned by Maria Fernanda de la Escalera (grandson of LEBRIJANO III, a horse that has left tracks with his movement) and of BURLONA XVI, bred by Vinyet. His final score was 79.387. His 19.455 in functionality is noteworthy, which gave him the second-best functionality score of the section, where he was ridden by Juan Vázquez. He was the favorite for Francisco Hernández and Luis Lucio. However, Francisco Javier García Romero preferred ESTRELLA CLXV, owned by Tomás Osborne. Son of COSACO II, owned by Candau and ESTRELLA XLV, owned by Tomás Osborne, who, in the end, earned second place. SENI INDIO, owned by Yeguada Senillosa came in right behind. This chestnut son of GUAPO-SENI II and of INDIA XI, both qualified breeding stock, is noteworthy. It is a chestnut horse with good genealogy, where you can find LEBRIJANO III, of Military Stud farm origins (in the genealogy of this latter, both on his dam and sire’s side, you can find chestnut horses).
son of the 2002 Stallion Breed Champion DIGITAL, and also of GUAPITA. All of these are qualified breeding horses. He was closely followed by PASTOR VI, son of the 2006 Stallion Breed Champion and NERO II that ended up being this year’s National Champion. This horse was bred by Yeguada Rosa and is currently owned by Can Maynou. REGENTE XII, ridden by José Manuel Lucena, achieved the best Functionality in the section with 19.503. This horse, owned by Yeguada Morán, has the genes of CESAR and MALUSO, of Military stud farm origins. INCAUTO CEN, Yeguada Can Maynou; ZOILO IX, Maria Fernanda de la Escalera, CANDELO XIII, Francisco Santiago; INDIO JT II, Javier Machuca; and DANZARÍN XXIII, owned by Francisco Triay all earned Honorary Mentions.
GUAPITO VI, owned by Hermanos Vara Muñoz Casillas, earned a trophy and rosette for his fourth place. He is a

t could be said that this section—with its thirty-nine participants—boasted the highest quality at SICAB. Just take a look at the incredibly high scores! The seventeen top-placed mares all received more than 80 points. LIRONA RAM, owned by Ayala, won by a huge margin. This five year-old grey mare with Salvador Guardiola origins has had a good season with a multitude of gold medals and a Breed Championship Award. She is a very compact five year-old mare with a lot of class and character. She has Salvador Guardiola genes on both sides. On the part of her dam, she is a granddaughter of EDUCADO X (by CENTELLA V out of EDUCADA III). CENTELLA V (one of the most outstanding horses owned by Guardiola) is by CENTELLA IV and out of MAROMO. MAROMO descends directly from one of the breed parents, BILBAÍNO III. On the part of CENTELLA VI, CESAR and MALUSO are most outstanding. LIRONA RAM, on her paternal side, is a great-granddaughter of CENTELLO III, who is brother to the sire and dam of CENTELLA V (This horse, therefore, appears on both sides). Francisco Javier García Romero and Javier Bayo had the same approach and both gave her the highest score. However, Juan Lecina scored her second. Her final score was 83.500. The well-known FER BRILLANTINA, owned by San Fernando-la Macarena, took second place, something that was, as always, helped by her magnificent score for movement. She has twice been Champion of Spain for Movement, in 2006 and 2007, and this time her score was 8.592. This mare has already proven her extraordinary paces representative of the PRE. Her total score was 82.509. She is the daughter of BOLERO F (qualified stallion, son of the qualified MAÑOSO II, with the brand of Maria Nieves López-Monis. And in turn, son of the mythical ORFEBRE of Military Stud farm origins) and LEGIONARIA XV owned by Marín García (by PAMEPRO V out of YACA III). As everyone can see, inborn movements are in her genes, and not just any old genes. In the fourth

step of her family tree there are such mythical horses as BILBAÍNO III, AGENTE, ORFEBRE and MARISCAL X. As can be seen, this section stood out not only for the conformation quality of the participants, but also for the quality of their movement. The walk, trot and canter of the mare owned by Yeguada Cubas, SALSERA III, received the magnificent score of 8.816. It was, above all, her trot that impressed most, along with the good movements of her hindquarters and her typical breed expression. She therefore snatched the movement title from FER BRILLANTINA. Both stole the applause of the public. The 2007 SICAB Reserve Mare Breed Champion, KARIOKA RAM, owned by Yeguada Díaz Renedo, was right on the edges of the special awards. Juan Lecina awarded first place to this daughter of EDUCADO X, owned by Guardiola and AFRICANA XXXI, owned by Ayala. She is a qualified mare, whose final score was 82.267 points. UMERA-B, owned by Can Maynou, was unable to reach the podium, but, as we have seen, this was a section of champions. Her fourth place is clear evidence of the good season that this mare, bred by Yeguada Bassols, has enjoyed. KAZANA RAM, owned by Mater Christi, placed fifth. She is another daughter of EDUCADO X, therefore sister on her father’s side, of KARIOKA RAM. KAZANA RAM had previously entered the arena at SICAB with very good results. In 2004 she was awarded the bronze and, two years later, in 2006, the silver. This season not only her prominent paces have been on show, but also her correct conformation, which she dproves both as an individual and in her cobra. Five Honorary Mentions went to three mares belonging to Yeguada Gala, PABILA, LABRADORA LXIII and ROCIERA XCV; SALSERA III, owned by Cubas; and NUBE MAC, owned by Can Maynou.

here were fifty-one participants in this section for five and six year-olds. INDIO JT, owned by Juan Tirado, justified the gold in this section, the same as he did last year at SICAB in section 8. This horse is a qualified stallion, that boasts typical breed standards. He is a son of the qualified CORTESANO IX, of Pallarés. He obtained a total of 80.274 points, which speak for the correctness of his shape and his good back. He was followed by ARMAS ZARZEÑO, owned by Orientalia Hispania. This Plaza de Armas descendant of ALBERO II (by CESAR, Military stud farm) stands out due to the good paces he always shows in the dressage arena, something that runs in his family. His score in the functionality test was 20.314, which gave him the best Functionality score in his section. Ridden by Sergio Marti, he went onto become the Reserve Champion of Functionality. NAZARENO XXXII took third place. He is owned by Fermín Bohórquez. This is the fourth time that this horse
has attended SICAB, and he has always ranked within the top five places. Fourth place went to LÁTIGO VI, owned by Magin Mateu. He also shared this place in the ANCCE Cup for 5 year-olds. He is therefore a horse with an excellent aptitude for dressage. He is a descendant of ORFEBRE, of the Military stud farm, and of MARSHAL X, owned by Fernando Camara. REMACHE XIII, owned by Yeguada Gala, Reserve Stallion Breed Champion last year at SICAB, this year did not reach his expectations, and took fifth place. Bred by Benito Sierra, he is a son of YACO II, owned by Marín García. The Reserve Functionality Award went to ALTANERO CXVIII, owned by La Troyeta, with 20.005. He was also ridden by Sergio Marti. Son of MACANUO V, owned by José Luis de la Escalera. Honorary mentions went to KEFIR XI, owned by La Devesa; GACEL RAM, owned by Ayala; MARISCAL XLIX, owned by Velasco-González; JOYERO XXIV, owned by Francisco Santiago; and HALCÓN SR, owned by Sanz Roldán.

here was a great deal of quality among the thirty-two mares in the arena. The nameTRIUNFADORA XXX says it all. This grey mare, bred by Yeguada Tomás Osborne is a daughter of MAROMITO V (Salvador Guardiola) and LEVANTE II. If you look through her family tree, you will see CENTELLA V, also owned by Salvador Guardiola. She seduced Francisco Javier García Romero to award her an advantageous score of 84.527. Luis Lucio placed here second; and Francisco Hernández in fourth. Her final score totaled 81.964 points. She is the celebrity mare of the stud farm from Avila, and enjoying a very sweet moment in a career that is unstoppable since her proclamation as 2004 Youngstock Filly Champion. A year later, the Spanish National Mare Breed Champion sash was hung around her neck. Just take a look back and remember her most important awards. At the age of seven, she won eleven Breed Championships, twentyone gold and five silver medals. And this season she has also been very plentiful: Mare Champion of Andalusia, Mare Breed Champion in Lugo, Baza and Ávila; Reserve Mare Breed Champion in Puertollano and at Concab (Granada). She is more expressive than ever and at SICAB she demonstrated her worth. She has a magnificent forehand, but, above all, she is boasts breed standards in and out.

ECIJANA XXII, owned by Urquijo, bred by Antonio López Gibaja, received the silver, while the bronze went to MAÑOSA V, owned by Velasco-González. This daughter of MAÑOSO II (by ORFEBRE owned by the Military Stud farm) owned by Maria Nieves López-Monis, was the preference of Luis Lucio. This season, she has been within the top three positions in all the competitions she has attended. CENTELLA XXII, owned by Mater Christi, came close to the podium. She was the favorite of Francisco Hernández and took fourth place. She is the daughter of CENTELLO V (brother of CENTELLA V) and ESTUPENDA VIII, both owned by Salvador Guardiola. This grey mare was Reserve Mare Breed Champion in 2006—the year she earned her first gold at SICAB. In 2007, in addition to achieving her second gold, she won the movement of her section. At SICAB 2005, she achieved the silver and best Movement. This season she has continued to harvest successes for Mater Christi as Mare Breed Champion in Trujillo, Ronda and Jaén; and Reserve in Rattan. Her walk, trot and canter were also the best in section 11 at Ronda and Rota. The mare preferred by Francisco Hernández was TERCIA-JEM. This horse is owned by Benito Sierra and bred by Yeguada Campo Bajo. BILBAÍNO III is one of her ancestors.

f the thirty-seven horses presented, one stood out above the rest. NERO II has a spotless record. Bred by Alonso Moreno de la Cova, he is son of the qualified stallion, INÉDITO. BILBAÍNO III—considered the PRE breed father— appears in his family tree, on his dam’s side. NERO II has participated in SICAB on numerous occasions. In 2003, he took the silver in section 8. A year later he came fourth in section 10 while in 2006 he was Stallion Breed Champion. Since then he had not entered the conformation competition arena again until CONCAB, where he was Stallion Breed Champion. That was the only competition he attended this season, and it served to give him his qualification for SICAB, where he repeated his 2006 feat and took the Stallion Breed Championship. This award was well deserved, because NERO II was in excellent condition. He overflows with breed characteristics, class and uniformity, in addition to having good movement. All this could be seen from his score of, 82.975. So clear was his victory that the three judges for this conformation division, Javier Bayo, Luis Lucio and Saúl Dávalos, all coincided when it came to awarding him the top position. He captivated not only the judges but everyone within eyesight. He was followed by FER BULERÍA, owned by VelascoGonzález. Another SICAB veteran bred by Ferrero. In 2005, he was awarded the bronze in section 12, and a year later took fifth place. This year he made-off with the silver and was second for Functionality of the section, ridden by Magín Mateu. The same as in section 11, there is another son of MAÑOSO II, owned by Maria Nieves López-Monis (son of the Military stud farm’s, ORFEBRE). On his dam’s side, you can find his Marín García origins, with PAMEPERO V and YACA III. In this case his origin says a great deal about this horse with excellent movement. 2*161 4#(#'. .'/15

KABILEÑO VIII, owned by San Fernando-la Macarena, took the bronze. He performed best in the functionality test, with a score of 20.56, which took him up a place, as he initially held fourth place after the conformation division. Son of PAMPERO VII and KABILA X (a direct descendant of ALBERO II), both parents and son bred were by Marín García. Kabileño held third place, the same as in last year’s SICAB. His excellent paces, in keeping with PRE prototypes, are starting to be typical of the ALBERO II line. His functionality test was great at the reins of Agustín Elías and he demonstrated his length of stride, cadence and an exceptional period of suspension. The judges (Javier Bayo, Juan Lecina and Saúl Dávalos) all agreed. Along with the other two horses who had the best functionality score of their section, KABILEÑO VIII disputed the Functionality Final and came out top. Something that stood out this year was the quality of the tests performed by the six horses running for the Championship of Functionality. Here, the preference for dressage was clear, as all were presented in this style. This is a point in favor of the PRE that, little by little, is proving its aptitude for competitive sport. UDÓN, owned by Finca Lo Tacon, bred by Gonzalo Valenzuela, was third after the provisional classification in the conformation division, however, after the functionality test, he fell back a place, thus ending up in fourth. CAPRICHOSO LV, owned by Magín Mateu, a qualified stallion bred by Miguel Bohórquez ranked right behind. At SICAB 2002, he earned the silver in section 10. He is a grandson of ALBERO II, owned by Paco Lazo. This is a horse that stands out for his functionality. SEVILLANO JF (Miño), GAVILÁN (Yeguada Gala), ARTISTA M SUAY (Rafael Martínez Suay), NAVEGANTE XVIII (Lovera) and PROMOROSO RAM (Ayala) received honorary mentions. 3rd Place, Kabileño VIII, owned by Yeguada San Fernando-La Macarena and bred by Yeguada Marín García

here was a great deal of expectation from this section with eighteen participating cobras. It was a full house at the mare’s marquee. The winner was the cobra revelation of this season with KAZANA RAM, LLAMATIVA RAM and MARCHADORA RAM, owned by Mater Christi. This cobra earned a total of 84.667 points. These mares, bred by Rafael Ayala, carry the genes of EDUCADO X. He is the sire of the two first-mentioned, and the grandsire of the last mare. This trio makes up a very uniform cobra, which has won seven gold medals in its first season, in Trujillo, Rota, Ronda, Jaén, Lugo, Baza and Estepona. In Puertollano, Ávila and Granada, it took second place. This year it has earned the title of Andalusian Cobra Champion.

This time one of their cobras was near the bulls-eye, with 84.167, so they almost made second place with IMITADORA III, ILUMINADA XIII, and HILANDERA XXIX. The two first have the same sire, EDUCADO X. In addition, IMITADORA III is granddaughter, on her dam’s side, of OFICIAL XXVIII, owned by Marín García. The origins of HILANDERA XXIX, however, are José Luis de la Escalera.
The second best score (84.180) went to the cobra made up of two mares from the cobra that was the 2007 Spanish National Champion. This year, this cobra was in the news with a change in ownership—it now belongs to San Fernando-la Macarena—and a change in one of its components from last year. The Opinion of the Judges
Textos and photos by María Sáez
FRANCISCO JAVIER GARCÍA ROMERO What did you think of the level at SICAB this year? I thought the level was good When compared to other years? Similar Are the breeders making an effort to improve the breed? Always, it is a lifetime obligation and part of their vocation. On the 3rd of October, the ANCCE Board approved the draft of the new Rules & Regulations for Conformation-Functional Competitions. Are you familiar with them? I have not read them. People have talked about them a great deal and I will read them in depth. Are there any weak points in the current Regulations? No, but everything can be improved.
FRANCISCO HERNÁNDEZ What did you think of the standard of the horses in the conformation competition? The standard is very important. I’d like to highlight that we are probably a little stagnated, above all in the standard for the stallions. There is a fact right now and this is that NERO II has had to return to become Stallion Breed Champion. I was fortunate to have been able to judge the youngstock sections and I believe we have to be more involved in a better selection of horses. I saw one really good section, but it should be well above what we have seen. Do you believe breeders are not doing a good job? It is not that they are not doing a good job. They are doing a good job, but we should have a selection that is still more decisive than what we have, because I would have liked to see a higher standard in these sections, where there were only five or six outstanding horses. What aspects of the breed could be improved? Two important points where a great deal of improvement is required are the backs and hindquarters. What do you think of the draft of the new Rules & Regulations for Conformation Competitions? Perfect. It is a little more extensive, the sections for the horse are better divided. With this, more information can be given to the breeder and they should, perhaps be divided down even further. Importance has been given to the limbs, that is to say, to the functionality of the horse. I would also highlight that with regards to the breed characteristics, it will be necessary to create some stricter coefficients in breed fidelity. For me, first and most essential is breed fidelity. This does not mean that we should not select much more with regards to the quality of functionality, because that is where the future is.

LUIS LUCIO At the eighteenth edition of SICAB; What was the standard like? Level: extraordinary, very high, towering. Better every year When compared to previous years, how did it compare? I have judged for the last three or four years and each year I am more surprised at the standard and uniformity of the horses. The level is very high. Do you believe that conformation competitions really help breeders to know what lines they should breed? Undoubtedly. They are an important benchmark because the horses are compared with others of the same age. Perhaps, on occasion, the results are a little confusing, because we as judges should try to have a certain degree of standardized criteria, but even so, with regards to the capacity of each judge to apply the criteria in a subjective way, I believe that they are very useful to the breeders, to compare one horse against another. What a lot the breeders complain about is the great difference in the scores between some judges and others. Yes, sometimes some judges mark higher than others, and it is true that some judges accent criteria in certain areas more than others. I believe that this enriches the criteria of the team. For that reason it is a good thing to have several judges, who give an overall mark, with which we come closer to reality. Article 50 of the draft of the new Rules & Regulations for Conformation Competitions says that “to judge a ConformationFunctional Competition there will be one judge or two judges, with the exception of the final of the Spanish National Championship, in which case there will be three. Do you think that this is too few? I do not think it is bad, I think it is OK. I believe that the ideal thing is that the formulas are agreed and that, whatever the formula applied, each of the judges is included in a general program in which they meet several times annually, where opinions are exchanged and we can advance a little towards a more consensual opinion. What do you think of the other aspects of the draft? I think they are fine. The Rules & Regulations are no more than the expression of the will of the breeders. I think this is right; they must establish the criteria they consider suitable, because they are the ones who breed horses and who maintain the sector. I do not think they are bad, I have read them and there are always points that can be improved, but they (breeders) are the first ones who are open to do change. What is the most important change you have seen? There have not been any major changes. They have finetuned some details and covered areas that perhaps were not contemplated. For example, although it seems surprising, one of the areas that is important is the fact of giving the judges a certain protection against the non-conformity of the breeders with regards to their criteria.

JUAN LECINA Good quality at SICAB this year? Each year, the level at SICAB improves. This year there were some important sections that were difficult to judge, where the winner could equally have been the first or the tenth; to be precise, an important competition. What do you think of the work of the handlers? Each year, the handlers prepare the horses better; they work hard throughout the whole year to reach the final and to ensure that the animals are in perfect condition. The truth is that the handlers fine tune and they are quite good. What do you Competitions?

It has a few gaps, but it is acceptable. What do you think about the fact that on the score sheet, greater importance is given to the limbs and limb alignment? The biggest problem with the PRE is here, in the limbs. It is very good that there is a score sheet that gives more importance to the limbs. And, for example, the head and neck division? Perfect. In that sense, I would divide it still further, so that the breeder has more information and that the judges are more involved.
SAÚL Dà VALOS There were more than 400 horses in the conformation competition this year. What was the standard like? I liked the standard very much, when compared to other years. I do not know if the standard this year was higher, but there were definitely a larger number of very good horses. The standard was excellent down to the 10th or 12th horse. What were the strongest sections? I always find the sections for the intermediate and mature mares to be the strongest. The standard was spectacular. Then, this year we have also seen some very good mature stallions in the top three conformation positions. What I most liked was that there was a good standard in functionality, with excellent movement, when compared to previous years. If you had to choose something from the conformation competition, what would it be? Apart from the quality of the animals, the good behavior of the public, as this year there does not seem to have been many complaints with regards to the judges and there was a good environment among the judges. We are happy because we put forward those horses that we believe were the best. Are the breeders performing their selection task well? I believe they are. I can speak about SICAB since the year 2000, which was when I began attending faithfully and I believe that there is clear improvement in recent years. Above all, it is in the limb alignment and backs where the improvement is most noticed. To improve the breed, a draft of the new Regulations for Conformation Competitions has been published. For example, there are changes in the score sheet and an increase in the coefficient for the marks for the limbs and limb alignment. Do you agree with these changes? I think that if we want to improve the PRE still further, it is fundamental to give this mark greater value. It is a way of putting the PRE at international level in other disciplines, which, at the moment, it runs into slight difficult. If the limb alignment is improved, this will led to an improvement in the croup, the power, movement and we will be able to access disciplines that, up to now, are a little outside of our reach. And at the European level, let’s see if we can conquer a little more of the market.

JAVIER BAYO What did you think of the standard of the participating horses? Each year we see a much higher level, not only in the animals but also with regards to the handlers, farm managers and riders, who improve their standards each year. What section was of the highest standard? For me the strongest and the most beautiful was section 9. What do you think of the changes in the draft for Conformation Competitions? Whenever these are changed and the idea is to improve them for the good of the breed, this is important. There will be some points that must be studied and checked with the breeders and the judges, by means of tests at competitions to see if they are feasible.
VĂ?CTOR HUERTAS What did you think of SICAB this year? I thought it was an exceptional SICAB. I believe that the standard was higher than other years and above all, very few mediocre animals. For me, it was the SICAB with the highest general average. Which section did you think offered highest quality? Section 12. The conformation in this section was excellent and the functionality was very attractive. By this, I mean that we are now seeing very functional horses, which can really compete in high-level dressage competitions. What about the professional level? Great care is given. From what can be seen at the competitions throughout the year, it has improved greatly. They are becoming more professional, the people really want to learn and to improve, from handlers to breeders. On the 3rd of October, the ANCCE Board approved the draft of the new Rules & Regulations for Conformation-Functional Competitions to advance in a better direction for the improvement of the breed. What do you think of these changes? I think it is good to make changes in the competition Rules & Regulations, but it must be done carefully. I am of the opinion that it is first necessary to try them in the arena and to see that they can really work, before publishing them. And the changes in the score sheet? The more marks there are, the more difficult it is for us to judge the sections, because there will be less differentiation between the animals. I have always been in favor of few marks, because this is the best way to differentiate between the animals in a competition.

or yet another year, the best PRE dressage horses were present at SICAB to dispute the ANCCE Cup Final. There were three International Judges from abroad and two National Judges in charge of establishing the placings. The fact that judges from outside Spain came to judge the PRE tests is very positive, because, on the one hand, they know neither the riders nor the horses and, therefore, the absence of any influences means that their evaluations are more objective. On the other hand, they are getting to know and used to seeing PRE horses, so that when these travel, they are not surprises to see PRE in the arena alongside so many Central European horses. However, it also entails danger; if the horses in the SICAB arena fail to reach a certain level of quality, there is always the risk that they might generalize and believe that what they are seeing is the fault on behalf of the horse, or even the breed, when that is not the case. There has been considerable improvement over last year. There were better horses, including some that were very good. The presentation in the arena was also greatly improved, and there were no major problems, except in the main test; but, surprisingly, where some extraordinary horses were seen was in the functionality tests for the Conformation Competition and these, on many occasions, were better ridden that in the dressage tests. When I speak of extraordinary horses, I do so from the point of view of the discipline of dressage, although, they are probably also extraordinary from a breed point of view. If this were not the case, they would not be where they are. I wonder; why are these
Dressage Judges
horses not competing in dressage competitions? Conformation and dressage are not incompatible, nor are their functions as sire stallions, in the case of those that are in training. Why do breeders (in general) not add the use of competitive ability to their best horses? As has been said before, there was a remarkable improvement over last year, with regards to what was seen in the Pavilion 3 arena, but even so, we were able to conclude that the quality of the horses exceeded the quality of their training, except in honorable and meritorious exceptions. Judges are not fortune-tellers, nor can they pretend to be, neither in the dressage tests nor in functionality. If we do not show them well ridden and trained horses, it is much more likely that the evaluations will be unjust and that the winner of the functional test will be, not the best horse, but rather the best presented. On the other hand, the horse winning the dressage competition will be a good horse that covers up training mistakes. This is something that happens quite often, above all since the judges have determined to give all of them, the good and the bad, such a small range of points which in many cases, luck is a much greater factor than it should be. In any discipline, the good should “clearly differ from the bad. The correct training of these horses will ensure that the extraordinary horses seen at SICAB will be able to prove what they are, and no body, not even the judges, will have the slightest doubt that they are really extraordinary when compared to those that are not.

On
Tuesday, the 25th, at ten in the morning, the first test of the Special National SICAB 2008 Dressage Competition, the ANCCE Cup Final, started, with the four years old horses, who disputed the Preliminary Test for 4 year olds. The presentation of all the horses participating was quite correct, which had a great deal to do with the judges’ appreciation of the quality as future dressage horses. This, in reality, is what is sought with this type of competition. Standing out well above all the others, with an extraordinary score of 80.200%, was PILATOS, owned by Yeguada el Moralejo. He was followed by CANIDO, owned by Yeguada Castillo de Azuel and then BARQUERO JF, owned by Yeguada Miño. On the following day at the same time, the 4 year-old Final took place, and the judges, probably with their eyes more accustomed to seeing PRE horses after the experience of the previous day, triggered changed in the positions. However, if the participants were divided in two groups, the top horses remained in the first group and lower-placed in the second, but with a different order. This test was won by BARQUERO JF, who received 5 points more than the previous day, for a total of 77.80%. PILATOS scored almost the same number of points less, finishing on 76.00%. In the final calculation, PILATOS took first place, followed by BARQUERO JF and CANIDO. Two interesting horses came behind them, who I believe deserved better, GLORIOSO, owned by Yeguada Jama, who, although he had a good trot and canter, had problems in the walk, and CANDELO XIII, owned by Francisco Santiago stud farm, who was somewhat restricted and perhaps for that reason did not occupy a higher position. In summary, when compared to last year, the quality of the horses has improved and this is particularly true about the rider’s presentation in the arena— something we must all be thankful for, especially the horses because they are better able to demonstrate their quality when they are well ridden.

The
Preliminary for 5 year-olds was also run on the 25th, which in the (off the record) opinion of some of the judges, left a lot to be desired. At this level, we presume that the young horses should be better, because they are now more experienced and have been ridden for more than a year. However, it would appear that the reality does not back this up, as the horses get older, the quality of the training diminishes—but that will be spoken about later on. The scores were much lower than those of the 4 year-olds; even so, they continued to be quite high. The winner was CUBANON, owned by Yeguada Las Pilas, who had a magnificent walk and a good canter, although he fell onto his shoulders in his trot work, and obtained an average of 74.80%. He was closely followed by CAZURRO II, owned by Yeguada Can Alzina, who had three good paces, but was
presented something short in front and long behind. His score was 74.60%. In third place came LATIGO VI, owned by Yeguada Magin Mateu, who had a very expressive trot and a good walk and canter, but was too restricted throughout the test. He obtained a score of 73.00%. On the second day, in the Final for 5 Year-olds test, the scores were still lower, with the best being 70.20%, which was achieved by AUREO, owned by the Yeguada Can Boada. This horse had a very good attitude throughout the whole test as well as three quality paces, although his trot was somewhat lacking in activity. He was followed by CARIÑOSO LXVI, owned by Yeguada Arroyomonte with 69.00% and then LATIGO VI, with 68.60%, who was the only one to keep his position of the previous day. In the end, having summed the two days, the winner was AUREO, with CUBANON in second position and CAZURRO II third.

oing up another year, things start to get complicated and this is something that was clearly reflected in the scores. The horses are asked to perform exercises that offer certain difficulties and a correct training begins to have a major bearing on what is seen in the arena. When this is lacking—even in a high quality horse—in this test, the result cannot be good. The positions failed to change from the first to the second day, with the exception of GERENTE AS, owned by Yeguada San Román, who achieved 60.80% on the first day and 68.40% on the second. This placed him in third place. The first and second places went, on both days, to JEQUE XXVII, owned by Cortijo El Robledal, with 69.00% and 71.400% respectively, and to ALELO, owned by the Military

Stud Farm, with 65.20% and 72.60%. Both of these appear to be magnificent horses, although with serious problems in their respective presentations. The first was very tense throughout the exercise, with a very short neck. This hindered good action from his hindquarters and as a consequence his walk was poor, although with a correct rhythm. 70.20% was the cumulative score, which made him the winner of the competition. The second, showed an expressive trot that covered a lot of ground, but with a restricted back that prevented him from bending in the curves and in the work on two tracks. He rushed a little in the lengthening, but had an excellent walk and a very good canter, although he continued to show symptoms of rigidity and restriction. His cumulative final score was 68.90%. GERENTE AS accumulated 64.60% and was placed in third position.

hese are now bigger words and, surprise, surprise, we saw a test in which almost all the horses were orderly and correct and, except in very few cases, had no great errors. The scores do not appear to be very high and, when compared to those of the young horses, they are not, but you must bear in mind that this is now a “proper” dressage test, in which what is judged is the quality of the training and not that of the horse in itself, even though these two aspects are inseparable. A case could be made, and it in fact often happen, that an extraordinary horse that is poorly ridden does not get good marks, and the other way around, less quality horses with good riders are placed in the top positions at many competitions, with good scores. Please, do not be mistaken, this is not a test of conformation or of movement; it is a technical test, of dressage. The confusion does not only exist for many non-professionals, but also for many judges. Carlos Pinta Salguero came top of the Prix St Georges, riding AMOROSO L, owned by Yeguada Miño, with 65.30%. He was followed by SAMARITANO IX, owned by Yeguada El Romerito and ridden by Andrés Rodríguez Sánchez, with 64.15% and NORTE, owned by Yeguada Lovera, who was ridden by José A. García Mena and who achieved a score of 63.45%.
The KUR INTERERMEDIARE I took place the following day. The KUR tests have a very important artistic component, which makes the judging extraordinarily complicated and the subjectivity, already unavoidable in the technical tests, here, is a predominant factor. The musical taste or the greater or lesser artistic sensitivity on the part of the judges can eclipse the technical aspect and decisively influence the final score, although the guidelines for judging are very clear and they tell us that somebody who does not perform a good technical test cannot be awarded a good mark in the artistic part. The reality is very different and on occasion, the spectacle is valued more than the dressage. With a very original entrance and careful choreography, Victor Álvarez Diez, riding CURIOSO XXV, owned by José Luis de la Escalera, achieved a score of 68.35%, tying for first place with NORTE, whose presentation was spectacular, although technically he left something to be wished for. NORTE won, because, as is stated in the Rules and Regulations, his score for the artistic section was higher. AMOROSO L took third place with 67.80%, and fourth was for SAMARITANO IX, with 66.45%. At the end of the two days, AMOROSO L headed the line-up with 66.55%, followed by NORTE with 65.90% and CURIOSO XXV with 65.825%.

t was the moment of the truth. The tests demonstrate that the training a horse has received for years has been correct and born its fruit, and that the horse has improved physically and mentally, being “calm, elastic, agile and flexible, but also confident, attentive and resolved, forming a perfect partnership with his rider”. At least, that is what the Rules and Regulations say. However, the reality does not always reflect this objective. Two horse-rider combinations were able to save thier ships, Victor Álvarez riding ILES, who belongs to Equid Sports S.L. and Cándido Tardio riding GUSARAPO, owned by Yeguada El Moralejo. The judges also understood this and they made this clear with their scores. Good horses, in general, some, even extraordinary, such as ANIMOSO XXXI, owned by Yeguada del Hierro del Bocado, but with serious technical faults in their training. ILES came out top in the Grand Prix, with 66.167%, followed by GUSARAPO with 62.833% and IBERIS, owned by Hnos. Mojarro Zamora who, ridden by Antonio A. Blanco, achieved a score of 61.958%. In the KUR GRAND PRIX, Victor Álvarez was able to control the tension that ILES had shown the previous day in the canter and he managed a good test with a careful choreography and a magnificent choice and interpretation of the music. His first place was confirmed with 70.75%. Cándido Tardío and GUSARAPO managed a correct execution, with no errors, with a beautiful choreography and with a high degree of difficulty. The music was well chosen and interpreted, which gave them a well-deserved second place with 67.80%. The final line-up did not alter from that of the two days. ILES was first with 68.458%, GUSARAPO second with 65.317% and IBERIS third with 63.229%.

The Opinion of the Judges
by JosĂŠ A. Fdez. Lineros Photos: Javier Bautista
Five judges were responsible for judging the dressage quality of the PRE horses competing in the 2008 SICAB ANCCE Cup Final. Three of these were International, Isabel Judet, for France, Karin Kruger, for Denmark and Barnabas Mandi, for Hungary and one of the judges at the recent Peking Olympics. There were also two National Spanish judges, Teresa Fontan and Jorge Conde. On the last day, David Merida, a National Judge, substituted Isabel Judet, who had to leave. We talked to them and asked them their opinion of the quality of the PRE and the Spanish riders.

Jose A. Fernandez Lineros interviewing the Dressage Judges
Is this the first time that you have judged a dressage competition dedicated exclusively to one breed? Isabel Judet No, several years ago I came to SICAB and in France I have also judged special tests for French horses, but not at either Prix st georges level or Grand Prix. Barnabas Mandi Two years ago I visited SICAB and I know Spanish Horses very well. I have been delighted to judge them.

Karin Kruger In my case, this is the first time that I have been to SICAB, but in Denmark I have judged special competitions for Danish horses Is there any difference between judging horses of a single breed and horses of different breeds, at the same time? IJ No, dressage is the same for everyone and a good dressage horse is whatever breed it happens to be What did you think of the level of this competition? IJ At each level we have seen several quality horses, but the riders must understand that to improve their dressage and for these horses to show their quality, they must return to basic training independent of their present level. Everything can be sorted out by returning to basics. Even those horses without the quality to compete internationally, they could be good at national level if the rider trains them from a correct base.
have encountered problems due to an incorrect basic training. KK I have faith in the future. I have seen great quality horses and the only thing missing is for the riders to change their mentality and be dedicated to perfecting their basic work. What virtues for this sport do you see in the PRE and that would you improve? BM I believe that it is necessary to improve the hindquarters and achieve a more powerful back. The forehand is very good, as well as the neck, the activity and willingness to work. KK They have a great deal of talent, especially in piaffe and passage, as well as in the canter pirouettes. What should perhaps be improved is the upper line, to create the capacity to lengthen in addition to collecting. From the four year-old horses up to the Grand Prix, what did you think of the evolution, upwards or downwards?
BM
Jorge Conde
I believe that the PRE horse is a good horse for dressage, but it is necessary to improve the training. The horses with fewer problems were the ones in the four year-old level. As we went up the levels, we
PRE horses are late bloomers and you see this in the four year-old tests. I find them to be a little immature. However, of the five and six year-olds, I believe that there are horses with a lot of

promise for the future. The Prix st georges was alright, and it is, perhaps, in the Grand Prix, where we were missing horses that usually compete, but they were not here. Teresa Fontan This year I watched the four yearold horses quite well; they have become quite serious. However, the five year olds, which is like the golden age for young horses, I think that the riders and breeders should think about working them guided more by the requirements for the young horse tests, because this is the future. Horses need this work to strengthen their muscles. We cannot expect a five year-old horse to perform exercises superior to those that correspond to their age. It is a little hard, but I believe that the riders have to learn how to ride these horses, and these days, they do not know how to do that. There were some very good horses that we were not able to see, because they were not well ridden. You all appear to agree that the main problem is not the horse but the training. How can we solve this? TF When a good horse fails in the arena, the rider usually blames the judges. It is possible that we are somewhat to blame, but our aim is to help and the riders have

to understand that there is a scale of training and some requirements in the tests that there is no option other than compliance. JC I believe that the riders have perhaps not understood what it is we are looking for in the tests for young horses. What is required is horses that are much more natural, orderly, with good basics and more in a natural state. What are not required are collected paces, or that the top line is short. The hurry to get to higher level tests or to be working at exercises of another level at the same time causes the horses to be too restricted, harming their natural paces. Do you not believe that sometimes showiness is rewarded more than technical quality?
Isabel Judet, Official International Judge from France Jorge Conde, a National Judge
JC Judges have a tool that greatly standardizes the criteria, which is the training scale and if we follow it closely, showiness, in the negative sense of the term, does not account for much TF For me, the greatest show is to see a horse work unrestricted, collaborating with its rider, and not a pressured horse. What we want to see in the arena is what has been called the “happy horse”

s is usually the case, the show jumping competition was an amusing and emotional show. This year, most of the riders were from the Royal Guard, plus a few of those who have now become regulars in this competition. The competition on the first day disputed the height of one meter and eight riders went on to the jump-off. Fernando Peinado, with PODEROSO VII won by 78 hundredths of a second, making the hair of all those watching stand on end due to his amazing speed, incredible short-cuts and how tight he passed by the jump stands. It sometimes appeared that he would collide with them. The second day was a single round, over the same height, and was, once again, won by PODEROSO VII, ridden by Fernando Peinado, who again caused the audience to rise from their seats due to his spectacular round. Second place went to LANCERO, ridden by the Captain of the Royal Guard, Luis Alfonso Choya; while AGRESSIVO took third place, ridden by Royal Guard Corporal, テ]gel Garate Camera. Once again, we have seen horses that, despite their limited training, are able to perform superbly in this type of competition, even some with a magnificent jumping mechanism; that goes to show the suitability of the PRE for this discipline.

he ANCCE Cup for Carriage Driving took place, once again, during the 18th International PRE Fair. The most prestigious stud farms in Spain, who have been participating in the various carriage driving competitions throughout the year, could not miss the most important date on the PRE calendar. The competition was held on three mornings, during which the presence of the public from the early hours was more than notable. This was despite the fact that the weather conditions this year were somewhat adverse. A total of 12 drivers were to dispute this cup, in the categories of singles, pairs and four-in-hands.
Marathon:
Doma:
This phase started mid-morning, when there were already numerous members of the public clustering around the five obstacles that, this year, made up the marathon test. This is a phase that delights the attending public and the competitors alike. Positions were to change in the various sections. This was the case with Manuel González, the 2007 pairs winner who, despite his fourth position the previous day, executed a magnificent exercise to make a spectacular comeback and coming out as absolute leader. In teams, Antonio Carrillo won the phase, but was unable to unthrone Juan Robles from his first place.
Dressage:
Cones:
Álvaro Gómez, with a horse owned by Yeguada Sierra Mayor, started the dressage phase. His score of 64.31 took him to first position. He was followed by Juan Manuel Hernández with a horse owned by Yeguada José Martínez Maraver. In the categories for Pairs, Alonso Sánchez, with horses belonging to the Military Stud farm of Jerez, earned a score of 46.51. He was followed by Alejandro Barreras with 52.69, who was driving horses owned by Hacienda Montenmedio. Third place in this section went to Antonio Gómez with horses owned by Yeguada Tres Cotos, and Pablo Pera with horses belonging to Yeguada Antonio Moraira. Both achieved a score of 53.55. In the four-in-hand section, veteran Juan Robles, current Champion of Spain with his four horses owned by the prestigious Military Stud Farm of Écija, took first place. Antonio Carrillo followed with his own horses. Juan Real, driving horses belonging to the Yeguada owned by Blanca Domecq Zurita, took a welldeserved third place in his first ANCCE Cup.
The twelve participating drivers reached the last day with similar scores, especially in the top positions. This caused there to be greater expectations from this phase. Álvaro Gómez managed a clear round within the permitted time, thus making him the undisputed champion of the singles. In the pairs section, Alejandro Barreras demonstrated great skill and ability negotiating the 20-cone-obstacles, to have a clear round within the time. In spite of this, Manuel González, who came third in this phase, once again ran away with the title of champion, driving horses owned by Yeguada Miguel Ángel García. In four-in-hand, Juan Robles and Antonio Carrillo continued to fight for the title, but, in the end, Antonio Carrillo from Cordoba was to take first place. Following this pair, ensuring his third place, came Juan Real, who achieved the bronze for the Yeguada belonging to Blanca Domecq Zurita.

ICAB, which is the maximum expression of a single-theme trade fair of all those held throughout the world, one that is dedicated in full to the PRE (Purebred Spanish Horse), opened its gates for its 18th edition at the Palacio de Congresos Convention Center facilities. It is a date on the calendar that is not to be missed. In its loyal commitment to Doma Vaquera, the now consolidated competition for this discipline, took place on the 28th and 29th November. This is a special national category for PRE horses, which are so treasured and recognized throughout the world for their character, beauty and multi-functionality. The ANCCE Organizing Committee, as was laid out in the advance program approved by the FHA, hosted this magnificent event in conjunction with the National Federation. Riders from several provinces and regions attending the event delighted the huge audience that crammed pavilion II where the tests took place to see their excellent work. Despite the ambitious calendar of activities scheduled at this multitudinous event, when the vaquera tests took place, the seating provided was far from sufficient for the numerous enthusiasts and admirers who had come from every corner of the world. The varied resources offered by the Organizing Committee meant that the results of the tests, as a whole, were brilliant. Two types of competition were held. One for Novice horses (from 4 to 6 years old) and the other open to all horses. For the judging, the exercise sheet, as laid out in the RFHE Rules and Regulations was used. In an effort to keep to schedule and avoid overlapping with other scheduled activities, participation was limited. As indicated in the program advance, ten places were available in each of the two categories. Initially, there were 12 contestants for the novice class, and 7 in the open, although for one reason or another, only 10 and 5 horses and riders, respectively, entered the arena. The performance offered by these riders was excellent, and their horses proved the functional quality of the breed in Doma Vaquera. ANCCE’s clear preference for Doma Vaquera was obvious in the arena. With the varied and ample calendar of activities, especially on Sunday, one of the busiest days, this event was reserved for midday when the crowds are largest. Thus, the three top winners from both categories could offer an exhibition performance in the arena. It was an exciting and impressive appearance for the multitude concentrated around the

arena. People were delighted by it all and proof of approval were the cheers and applause rendered to the various horses and riders for their efforts. The judges for this Cup were unanimous in the final lineup when it cam to the top positions in both categories. The top place in the novice class, with a total of 350.34 points, went to “Guapo XXIV.” This horse has a Yeguada Lanzarote brand and of Escalera origin, son of last year’s Champion, “Tomento II.” He was ridden by a regular in these competitions, Pedro Urbina Ponce wearing a traditional and country-styled attire. The multiple champion of this discipline, José Tirado Cerrada, clearly placed first in the open category. He provided us with pure country flavor in his executions and once again expressed his merit as a good rider with the gray “Jerezano LXXXII”. He was bred in 2001 by “Casas Reales”, son of “Lisonjero” and “Jerezana LXX”, and carries a Manuel Peña Gutiérrez & sons brand. For the next places in the novice class there was “quorum” in terms of criteria for the second and third places on both days, both being taken by the youngest of the “Tirado” family, Cayetano Tirado Gómez, who, in both cases, presented good work, rhythm and presentation in his horses. He achieved second place with “Esperanto”, a spirited bay from the Military Stud farm, bred on the Picos de Europa stud farm, and owned by Julián Valle. Third place went to “Barquero.” This gray was born in 2002 and is owned by the wonderful German lady, Anne Vera. With her camera, this PRE enthusiast did not miss a single detail during the competition. Barquero was bred by the magnificent fan, and in his day a vaquera competitor, Emeterio García de la Torre. In the open class, second place went to the gray “Campeon”, owned by Francisco Quintanilla and ridden by another regular and a splendid rider, José Antonio Olea Rodríguez, who earned a total of 363.33 points. This rider also competed in the novice class, with a descendant of the mythical “Albero II”, with a Paco Lazo brand and bred by Yeguada Centurion, “Guiñolero Cen”, born in the spring of 2002. Third place went to Eustaquio Piñero Gómez, from Badajoz, riding the mare, “Esperada LXVI,” a high spirited gray with a Carlos García-Tomé Rodríguez brand, from Extremadura and owned by Domingo Chávez Martínez.
six was obvious. It revealed that the PRE horse is suited to this discipline, although, I consider that the selection processes should be more ambitious. For this discipline, there should be a differentiation of horses based on its functionality, conformation, character, impulsion and aptitudes to better adapt to the sport, which is something I have no doubt exists within the livestock of this multipurpose breed. And taking advantage of this article, I am going to address the breeders with the respect that they deserve, asking them to bear in mind the market potential that training vaquera horses could have, due to the multiple applications that these could have within a diverse supporting public. They must take advantage of their genetic resources and select horses that suit the demands of this discipline, because I am certain that, amongst their stock, they have horses with conformational characteristics that are ideally suited to supply the increasing demand for this type of horse. Then, in up-coming competitions, their participation will contribute to a greater projection of the PRE in this well-admired competitive discipline. As the fair came to an end, and all the competitions in the pavilion 3 arena concluded, the traditional awards ceremony took place, along with the closure of the event. Since its creation in 1991, SICAB has been successful once again, thanks to the praiseworthy efforts of the whole ANCCE family. The importance of these past few days must be reiterated, including all of the complementary activities, which have offered a representative sample of the characteristics for which this “prestigious” horse has been admired throughout history. The PRE is considered among the best of world breeds and continues to develop unconditional fans thanks to its noble, favored and fascinating characteristics, which are ideal aptitudes for Doma Vaquera. Proof of this were the many horses in the extensive competitive life of the exciting field of Doma Vaquera.
ANTONIO PALACIOS LÓPEZ
In summary, the top places went to riders who got the best from their horses, executing the field tasks brought to the arena in good style with well performed fast starts, halts, and turns. Likewise, the young horses demonstrated their suitability for this impressive discipline. We were able to see some horses with magnificent paces, which will certainly lead to favorable progression to rank high in the open class in upcoming years. During the two competition days, there were glimpses of high value performances from the participants, with acceptable executions of exercises in which the Spanish Horse was able to sufficiently demonstrate its value for working with livestock in the fields. hat I really think would be good, would be to remove the judges’ tables from the arena. When preparing the set-up, something should be done to resolve this inconvenience. No doubt, the horses can perform better, while the riders would have more possibilities when performing, since without those tables along the sides, they would gain greater mobility and we could enjoy ourselves with more variety in the free-style tests. I am sure that those in charge could find a good solution. But let’s get down to business, to the base equitation, where I am sad to find that there are still riders who do not ride for the love of the art. It grieves me that such magnificent horses fail, in some cases, to show their very best due to the fact that they have not been trained for the love of the art... the art of equitation. Equitation, at its best, is an art, not an abstract art, but rather realist, and for me, the best definition of art is the one that reflects the secret essence of things. Likewise, this secret essence is invisible and for that very reason, "invisible riders" are governed more by what is invisible; this does not mean that they go unseen. Air cannot be seen either, but you feel it when it becomes a breeze. The equitation of "invisible riders" is not seen either, but it is felt deep inside the observer, even the untrained spectator. So, what is the secret essence of horses? From equs. From equs: equs-liber. From equs-liber: Balance, what a formula! It is so simple (at first sight), unalterable and immortal as an Egyptian pyramid. Balance is the secret essence of horses, horses in freedom. All that was and is needed is to define balance. We, the riders, continue to work our horses with their polls extremely low, and their faces behind the vertical. This takes away mobility from their forehand and hinders their adopting a balance sustained predominantly by their hindquarters, so that they can be seen to be equs-liber. That liberating balance must even be retained when ridden, especially for Alta Escuela.

What is equitation for? How can it become art if in the work of artistic creation we eliminate our partner’s secret essence? You now understand why I am saddened to see these splendid PRE horses, from Andalusia, the inspiration for Roman linguist to coin words, probably along the fertile plains of the Betis River*, relinquished of their balance, prisoners of reins that give them no possibility of showing their full worth. If what I have written so far has served to awaken the sensitivity of some riders, then they are good riders and good horses, perhaps all that is lacking is that the former change or enlarge their vision of equitation; certainly the horses will also change the feeling they give their riders. Speaking of balance I will continue: The canter pirouettes of Cartujano VI were fantastic! When I saw them I thought: “I want to teach my horses to do a pirouette like that, perhaps I will be successful.” Never in my wildest dream have I seen them so slow, so cadenced, high, flowing, and beautiful. All his canter work was incredibly neat and had an extraordinary aesthetic sense. Thanks to this and the 2*161 %#4.15 0 K'<

music that enfolded and flooded us, for a few instants I was absorbed, enthralled by the sight. Flamenco XII entered the arena in an almost perfect Spanish Walk, and floated in front of us all, appearing weightless while he performed Passage and Piaffe. The canter pirouettes were somewhat large, but they ended up being magnificent. Masanor had a good walk, with that rhythm and balance that riders who have the Andalusian countryside inside them know how to give. Little by little, the horse broke down into work in which the quality of the base equitation could be appreciated. Well in the hand, with the poll high, balanced both inside and out, and although perhaps he did not dazzle us in any individual exercise, he produced a quality equitation; well interpreted by his rider, who, despite his youth, managed him, not only skillfully, but with what is even better, with taste. In Andalusia, in Spain, there have always been, and currently, we still have good riders and good horses. However, I do not know if perhaps, due to our unique personality, we are capable of the greatest achievements. Nevertheless, we often see how, on occasion, we overlook the details; we forget that the Participants in the ANCCE Cup for Alta Escuela in the Pavilion 2 arena

truth is in those details. Well, what is a realist work of art without details? Michelangelo’s Pietà is unfinished on its rear, but when looking at it for a long time, you do so due from the front, which was where the Master, the artist, did not miss a single detail, or feature. This happens with some of the equitation that we witness; in some aspects worthy of the greatest of the artists, in others, unfinished. However, in the end, these rider-artists all come from the same culture. Perhaps the characteristic extravagance of certain Latin artists does not occur to Anglo-Saxon riders. Please forgive me for not mentioning all the horses and riders, there is no space for them all. My view of equitation and my love for horses has dragged me into these philosophical-artistic wanderings.

e Exhibition Competition is perhaps the most attractive for the general public who is anxious to see different: equitation in the purest and strictest sense of art and showmanship taken to the maximum expression of creativity by each of the participants. Both on the two days the competition was held—Friday and Saturday afternoon—and for the presentations of the finalists on Sunday, spectators packed into the stands and around the arena. Two days of competitions would lead to the finalists from among the fourteen participants. A competition in which there was a little of everything, exhibitions of Alta Escuela (Spanish High School), Rejoneo (mounted bullfighting), vaulting, dressage and flamenco style Sevillana dancing. The Spanish Side-saddle Association participated in the competition, and placed first with their exhibition
“Carrousel of four lady riders”. The performance included a carrousel of four lady riders (Maria José Escobar, Lorena Llorente, Maribel Ortega and Sara de Haro) dressed in Spanish attire and performing high school exercises. The judges really liked their performance, for which they scored 7 on both days, making a total of 14 points. Closely behind was Miguel Ángel Pérez Osuna, with his exhibition of “long reins”. A classic that received 6.5 points both days. Third place went to “Tandem triexal” performed by Luis Carlos Campos. He offered an original exhibition in which he took the reins of three horses, one in front of the other. On the first day he received a 6, and on the second, 6.5, which added up to a total score of 12.5.

andlers have two tasks: underscore the virtues of the horses they present while at the same time hide any possible defects. Their work is more and more important because it can greatly improve the score of the horse. But in addition to this, other variables were studied during the two-day handlers’ competition. Of the nine people who had entered on the Saturday, only five participated on the first day. Pilar Alonso Montaño, from Yeguada Francisco Santiago Ruiz; Rafael Román, from Yeguada Bohórquez Sevillano; José Manuel Estévez Mora, from Yeguada Molero Malo and two handlers who had competed at SICAB last year: Rubén Arrabé, from Yeguada Domingo Arrabé and Bayardo Duarte, from Yeguada Llorente. In 2007 they received the bronze and silver, respectively. This year, on the first day, Judge Feliciano Reyes Seda placed the presentation by Rubén Arrabé first followed by that of Rafael Román and Bayardo Duarte. Feliciano Reyes judged both the handler and the horse. The handlers were judged for their attire, behavior in the arena and the presentation at halt and on the move. Of the three types of clothing permitted according to current regulations, all of t he participants opted for the typical Andalusian country-style attire. This suit includes several important details such as the handkerchief in the jacket and knowing that if the trousers have tussles, they must be accompanied by shoes or ankle boots with leggings. On the other hand, if the trousers have cuffs, boots must be worn. As for the horse, their paces are borne in mind (walk, trot and canter), the halt and their presentation including the cleanliness of the horse and harness. The second day was less competitive. Only the top two from the previous day, plus a new young handler, Francisco Fernández, appeared in the arena. The second day, the best score was given to Rafael Román; Rubén Arrabé and Francisco Fernández followed in that order. As this latter was not present on the first day, he had fewer points in the total computation. In the end, the Best Handler at SICAB 2008 was Rubén Arrabé, from Avila, followed by Rafael Román and Francisco Fernández.

5th PRE HORSE AUCTION ANCCE once again organized a PRE Horse auction coinciding with SICAB. This is the fifth year that the Association has pulled out all the stops in terms of work and efforts to achieve the desired objective, which is none other than to satisfy the needs of PRE breeders and potential purchasers. The horses selected more than fulfilled expectations, since they met the strict health care demands of previous years thanks to their varied conformation and quality. Fifteen stallions came under the hammer in this 5th PRE Auction, three of which are qualified breeding stock, plus four mares and four lots of fillies. The horses were on show to breeders, purchasers and enthusiasts in arena II from the 25th to 27th. The stallions were presented under saddle while the mares were presented in hand. The auction began just after noon—at 12:30 to be exact—on Thursday the 28th November in Pavilion III. Quite a large group attended the auction to offer some very good bids—in some cases the amount reached €11,500. The auctioned horses were acquired by national and international breeders, such as the breeders who had traveled from Germany, Italy, Holland and Sweden to increase stud farm stock as true representatives of the quality, beauty and functionality of PRE horses.

At this eighteenth edition of SICAB, the organizers wanted to invite a country that has, for years, created an authentic chapter of Spanish-American enthusiasm for the equestrian world, and in short to the PRE. It must be noted that, outside of Spain, Mexico is the country with largest numbers of PRE horses. Due to this fact, Mexico had to be in an edition like this one. Since the news got out that Mexico was the guest country at SICAB 2008, the presidents of the associations arrived, and they worked tirelessly to turn the FIBES (Sevilla Convention Center) facilities into an authentic setting for Mexican breeders, cuisine, and folklore without forgetting Mexico’s most popular drink: tequila.
institutional visits, such as that of Her Royal Highness Infanta Elena, the President of the Andalusian Regional Government, Manuel Chávez, to mention a few. They also attended the media and the many visitors and horse enthusiasts who enjoyed a continuous supply of typically Mexican cuisine and beverages throughout the twelve hours the stand was open.

Shortly after SICAB had opened its gates, the Mexicans wait to welcome those on hand at the sand, but to do this, they had to inaugurate it, so hours before the Official Inauguration, the ribbon was cut by the Mexican Ambassador in Spain, Jorge Zermeño, accompanied by the Chiapas Minister of Justice Amador Rodríguez, the President of ANCCE, Javier Conde, President of CCPREM, Joaquín Quintana and the President of AMCCE, Victor González. During the five days of SICAB, the Mexican organizers attended all the protocol events. In addition to holding daily celebrations at their stand, such as the tributes paid to Santiago Herrero and Tomás Terry, the presentation of the Book, Las Charrerías, Arte y Tradición (Charrerías, Art and Tradition), they received national 2*161 /#07'. 8#5%1

Children: the real stars on the first day of SICAB
Judges with the winners of the 2nd Drawing Contest Grade School winner, Juan Carrasco Mateos
Prior to the inauguration ceremony, the organizers invited 4,874 children from 67 schools the city of Sevilla to participate in these first hours of SICAB, in an effort to bring the equestrian world closer to the youngest generations discover and learn more about PRE horses. Groups of children, with their school uniforms were able to spend hours exploring the 72,000m2, full of excitement at being able to see a PRE up-close. The bravest were even able to pet the wonderful horses that were on display at this year’s SICAB. But the greatest mystery was reserved for the end of the day; schools were impatient to learn the names of the winners of the 2nd edition of the SICAB 2008 Freestyle Drawing Competition, titled “The Horse and its Surroundings.” The panel of judges who had an tough task of selecting the winners included Javier Conde, the President of ANCCE and SICAB, Beatriz Zamora, President
of the judges and artist, as well as rider Fernando Peinado. At last, the names of the winners were revealed. These were: In the Secondary School Category, Diana Rubio Contreras from I.E.S. ISBILYA, who is currently studying her third year at secondary school. Juan Carrasco Mates, from the Fomento Tabladilla School—in the fifth grade—was the winner in the Primary School Category. And in the Nursery School Category, the winners were María Candau Cháves, age 4 and Claudia Álvarez Álvarez, age 5, who each won a Special Prize in the category for the very youngest. As the icing on the cake for a day full of excitement, and which had been exhausting, especially for the teachers, the children were able to enjoy a special edition of the Show “Caballos Egregios” where they were able to enjoy games with fire, acrobatics, and a garrocha pole number in which the PRE was the real protagonist.

Breeder Agenda Presentation The first event on the SICAB program, following its Official Inauguration, took place almost as soon as the doors of FIBES (Convention Center) were opened. This was an exciting project that ANCCE presented; something that the Association had invested an enormous amount of work in terms of hours over the past months. Breeders were informed and presented with a computer agenda that strives to improve the stud farms management, which, as Juan Pedro Domecq explained in his dissertation, “is a breeder management tool, which serves a number of functions: from noting all the stud farm tasks to calculating the results that would come about from the crossing of two horses, among a number of other functions.” This breeder agenda has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Genetics Department at the University of Cordoba School of Veterinary Science. Javier Conde, President of ANCCE, was responsible for presenting this project, although due to other commitments, he limited his introduction to a short presentation. He was accompanied by Juan Pedro Domecq, President of the Stud Book Commission and Pedro Rey, General Director of the LG-PRE-ANCCE Stud Book.

These latter provided an in depth explication to all the breeders at the presentation of the agenda and its uses. They provided relevant details about the project, including the €400,000 invested in this agenda to develop specific software that will help breeders plan the various management aspects of their stud farms: health care campaigns—including disinfection, vaccination and worming of the livestock, coverings, foalings, purchase management, consultations of genealogies, shoeing, and planning production by studying the in-breeding of future foals. They also explained that this agenda, in addition to being interconnected with the LG-PRE-ANCCE Stud Book for individual stud farm access registration information, breeders will be able to maintain an update of their stud farm as they incorporate new foals in the future. “Right now, we are working on the inclusion of more services in the agenda, such as the prediction of the coat color so that we will continue to provide updates that offers the broadest possible range of service to breeders. There will be at least one up-date per year, and this could even extend to twice a year, depending on breeder requirements,” concluded Juan Pedro Domecq.

Subsequently, the management of ANCCE met in the dome to await the first of the two institutional visits scheduled for the day. Manuel Cháves, President of the Andalusian Regional Government arrived at about 1 pm, accompanied by the Regional Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Martin Soler Márquez and Rosamar Prieto the Alderwoman for City Festivities. They proceeded to tour the facilities, visiting the pavilion with the mares, on to the Breeders’ Marquee, and making a special stop at the Mexico stand, where they had a chat with the presidents of the AMCCE and CCPREM associations, Victor González de Pablo and Joaquín Quintana. Both, along with the author of the book Las Charrerías, Arte y Tradición (Charrerías, Art and Tradition), Octavio Chávez, presented him with a copy of the book. They took their leave with a toast with the best drink that these Mexicans could offer, a toast of Tequila.

Lunch was then provided at the ANCCE stand, with the President of ANCCE and SICAB, Javier Conde, the Vice-president, Pedro Maza, and the Treasurer, Augusto Romero Haupold, accompanied by a group of Mexican authorities. The second institutional visit of the day was the Regional Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Eva María Cano, who arrived at SICAB at about 7pm. She too toured the various pavilions where she had the opportunity to learn something more about SICAB and PRE horses. Her visit concluded in the VIP box of Pavilion III, where she enjoyed the show “Caballos Egregios” (Illustrious Horses).

Welcome and meeting with international journalists Every year, SICAB welcomes international journalists from the most important world-wide equestrian media. This year there were journalists from various countries. Five journalists came from the USA, three from the equestrian magazine EQUITREKKING and two from the CONQUISTADOR. One French journalist represented the CHEVAL MAGAZINE, and two came from Italy, one from the magazine CAVALLO MAGAZINE and the other from IL MIO CAVALLO. There was also a Russian journalist, from the magazine HORSE WORLD and two from the United Kingdom, one who writes for HORSE HEALTH and the other for HORSE DEALS. This made a total of 14 journalists who specialize in the world of horses.

Presentation of the Lions Club new project at the Caballo Ayuda stand
The Foundation for the Development of Equestrian Therapies, along with the Lions Club in Sevilla summoned the press to the Caballo Ayuda (Horse Help) stand to present their new project, which is to raise funds for the construction of an equestrian therapy center in Sevilla. The project plans to rent the Sevilla Fair grounds stables. For the second year running, stables were installed at the end of the fair ground where riders attending the April Fair in Sevilla could rent one or several boxes to leave their horse(s) at the end of the day. Thus, a fund-raising center will be built, which will be dedicated in full to equestrian therapies, in addition to offering competitive services and prices that will be within reach of horse enthusiasts. The Caballo Ayuda thanked ANCCE for donating their stand, which served to inform everyone—whether breeders or enthusiasts—about the activities they are carrying out and the needs that are yet to be covered in this type of therapies depending on the pathology. The event concluded with a tribute and the presentation of a plaque to singer, José Manuel Soto, who stated that the Raid Tierras de AlAndalus, which he presides and had presented a few hours before at the Heineken stand, has for years, collaborated with this organization and vice versa, so they mutually offer services and are promoted in the best possible way.

Guests at the presentation of the book and awards ceremony
Pura Casta Awards In an effort to promote the PRE, Grupo Lettera publishers organized and sponsored the third edition of the Pura Casta Awards, coinciding with SICAB, the International Equestrian Fair. This Award is granted to outstanding personalities of the equestrian world and to present the book, El Habla del Jinete Andaluz (Andalusian Rider Language) by Juan Llamas Perdigó.

Once again, the goal was to bring together breeders, riders and, more exactly, lovers of the Spanish Horse and to reward, from an artistic traditional point of view, all efforts to safeguard and disseminate the PRE culture of both in and outside of Spain. The ceremony began with the presentation of the Book El Habla del Jinete Andaluz. Once again, Grupo Lettera has laid stakes to promote the equine culture with a new publication. Juan Llamas Perdigó, author of the book, was accompanied by a large number of breeders and by two friends who sat at the table explaining how the idea of this new project arose. These were Joaquín Fernández Cepedello and the breeder, Miguel Ángel Cárdenas. The book covers concepts that are typical of the south, which, I am sure, we have all used or heard at some time. Mexican Tribute to Santiago Herrero 2*1615 '&;/#
Santiago Herrero, President of the Andalusian Entrepreneur Confederation (CEA) received a tribute from the Mexicans for his role in most of the business operations between Andalusia and Guadalajara, Mexico. He is also responsible for the good relationship he maintains with breeders and personalities from this sister country. Following the presentation of a plaque, he granted a short interview and confirmed that the world of horses in Andalusia is almost as importance as it is in Jalisco.
This means that it is a substantial economic factor both for us and for them. Also on hand for the tribute were Aurelio López Rochas, Blanca Villarello, who were responsible for presenting the gift to Santiago Herrera; the President of ANCCE, Javier Conde, the presidents of the Mexican associations, Joaquín Quintana and Victor González and members of the ANCCE Executive Committee.

At about 2.30 pm, photographers and members of the press met at the Sanlúcar Horse Race Association stand for the presentation of the Equestrian Week that was to take place on the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th of December. During SICAB, details were completed for this thirteenth edition, but the organizers wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in the International Equestrian Fair, to publicly present their program of activities, which included three categories: horse races on the beach, show-jumping and long distance. This event is held in Sanlúcar de Barrameda annually and has already become an important attraction, both from the economic point of view as well as for tourism.

Presentation of the PRE Horse Book The presentation of “The PRE Horse Book,” one of the most beautiful projects undertaken by ANCCE, had to be part of SICAB this year. It was presented by Javier Conde, President of ANCCE and is included in the plan for breed promotion. It is a work of art, both in terms of its quality design as well as the presentation and content. Some two thousand copies of this 172-page book with 142 photographs have been published in Spanish and a thousand in English. It is basic reading for both breeders and enthusiasts. It strives to become a manual to learn about PRE basics: breed history, conformation characteristics, aptitudes for sports, Stud Book, selection program, etc. In terms of the content, the authors have been chosen for their expert knowledge as they are the best in each field of knowledge.

Presentation of the book Las Charrerías and Tribute to Tomas Terry 2*1615 '&;/#
At 1:00 pm, Bertin Osborne arrived at SICAB with his daughter Alejandra Osborne. They have been faithful guests for many years due to their passion for the world of horses and their ties with Mexico.

Osborne, from the city of Jerez, and his daughter, in addition to enjoying a visit through the SICAB facilities, presented the book Las Carrerias, arte y tradicción with the Mexican author Octavio Chavez. Alvaro Domecq, a renowned mounted bullfighter, accompanied the Mexican and ANCCE entourage. Las Charrerias is considered one of the best known and appreciated traditions both in Mexico and abroad. The book is the result of in-depth research that resulted in this important work, based upon a detailed description about the feats, tasks, attire and harnesses. Once the book had been presented, Tomas Terry was honored for his career and links to the world of horses. Alejandra Osborne gave him a painting and a briefcase on behalf of SICAB-LOEWE. To speak of Tomas Terry is synonymous to elegance, good taste and sophistication, in addition to being one of the most prestigious PRs in Spain. He has a keen sense of friendship a well as excellent business skills, and it has been precisely this sense of friendship that has been the basis for a good friendship with ANCCE. Thanks to Tomas Terry, SICAB has enjoyed the visits of wellknown movie stars such as Charlton Heston, Sofia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida and other socialites such as Isabel Preysler, Antonia dell’Ate, etc. Alejandra Osborne with her father, Bertin, presenting the book, Las Charrerias

Tribute to breeder Antonio Ariza Tribute to Antonio Ariza Antonio Ariza jr. accepting a painting and bronze statue from Javier Conde, in remembrance of his father
Once again, the show Caballos Egregios was the backdrop for one of the most emotional and well-deserved tributes of all SICAB. ANCCE wanted to honor breeder Antonio Ariza, who passed away three years ago at the age of 84. Antonio Ariza created important ties with Mexico, by marketing both brandy and PRE horses. Among other aspects, he established the Domecq (wine) delegation in Mexico and was behind the creation of the Azteca breed, which is Mexico’s national breed. Ariza took four of the six PRE mares with Casa de Alba brands that Domecq owned to Mexico and began crossbreeding them with Charro horses. This resulted in unique and different horses: the Azteca breed had been created.

Ornella Muti and Naike Rivelli 2*1615 '&;/#
JERRY HALL, ORNELLA MUTI AND HER DAUGHTER NAIKE, WERE THE STARS AT SICAB Saturday morning, SICAB, played host to two exceptional lady riders, two authentic international stars. Jerry Hall, born in González (Texas) 52 years ago, a model since she was 16, and separated ten years ago from the lead singer of the Rolling Stones and Ornela Mutti with her daughter, Naike, both well-known Italian actresses. First thing in the morning and with typically British punctuality, Jerry Hall arrived at her appointment with the journalists at the press conference. The link uniting her to the equestrian world stood out, since she has taken part in rodeos, and her sister was a champion in this field. She currently rides whenever she can. Jerry then went on a tour of the SICAB facilities and was extremely interested in acquiring a horse-drawn carriage.

Later on, Ornella Muti arrived in the Ronda Room, with her daughter, Naike Rivelli, both escorted by Fabrice, Ornella’s attractive French-Italian boyfriend. They had a relaxed chat with the journalists, about their professional and personal life, but what stood out, above all, was their love for Sevilla. Although they are unable to come as often as they would like, Ornella Muti remarked, "Sevilla has stolen my heart, it is beautiful." She also confirmed that she is a horse enthusiast and defines it as "a fantastic, beautiful and pure animal. They were instilled in me from a very young age, because my mother was an excellent rider". After the press conference, they enjoyed lunch organized at the EME hotel, in the center of Sevilla. By the afternoon, the famous SICAB guests had fulfilled their traditional obligation, which was to enjoy the

This year, the show fulfilled a debt held with a group of famed gentlemen who have contributed decisively to the promotion of the PRE the world over with their equestrian art. Mounted bullfighting (rejoneo) is an art that has best disseminated and promote the PRE as a breed. The mounted bullfighters present at the tribute to the equestrian and bullfighting art included Ángel Peralta, Rafael Peralta, Fermín Bohórquez, Antonio Ignacio Vargas, Javier Buendía, Antonio Correa and José Samuel Luppi. Each of them received a a commemorative bronze for their careers from Javier Conde, President of ANCCE, Gem Ruiz, Juncal Rivero, María Rosa Orad, Carmen Lomana, Nataliza Zabala and Naike Rivelli.
