A Great Golf Destination

Keen golfers don’t only live for golf – well, not completely anyway. They also find the time to enjoy nature and delight their palates with the most exquisite cuisine. A tourist destination that combines these three ingredients, and knows how to combine them perfectly, is Benahavís, on the Costa del Sol. This picturesque Andalucian town has the third highest number of golf courses in Spain, second only to its neighbours Marbella and Mijas.

Benahavís se ha convertido en la tercera localidad de España (sólo superada por Marbella y Mijas) con mayor número de campos de golf. Este municipio malagueño, pequeño en población (alrededor de 7.400 habitantes de derecho, casi la mitad extranjeros) y grande en extensión (145 kilómetros cuadrados), tiene una decena de campos –198 hoyos en total– repartidos entre 8 clubes: Villa Padierna (54 hoyos: Flamingos, Alferini y Tramores), La Quinta (27), La Zagaleta (36: Old y New Course), Atalaya (sólo el New Course, de 18, que tiene una parte en el municipio), Marbella Club (18), Los Arqueros (18) y El Higueral (9 con pwlanes para ampliar a 18. Existe otro campo, Monte Mayor, de 18 hoyos, pero lleva ya unos años cerrado aunque hay perspectivas de reapertura a medio plazo. A esta amplia oferta golfística hay que añadir la Academia de Golf Municipal, enclavada junto al casco urbano y anexa al Gran Hotel Benahavís, de cuatro estrellas, y que cuenta con un espléndido campo de prácticas, complementado con un amplio búnker, zona de approach y putting green. De la cantera de jóvenes con gran talento golfístico que se han formado en esta escuela, destaca Julia López Ramírez, que está brillando al máximo nivel internacional.

La calidad de sus campos de golf es indiscutible, y entre los diseñadores de renombre que han dejado su impronta en los recorridos golfísticos de Benahavís cabe citar por ejemplo a Severiano Ballesteros (Los Arqueros), Manuel Piñero (La Quinta) y Dave Thomas (Marbella Club Golf Resort).

TORNEOS INTERNACIONALES. En el ámbito deportivo, es de reseñar la celebración de importantes torneos internacionales, tanto amateur como profesionales, en este municipio costasoleño. Por ejemplo, La Quinta ha acogido varias ediciones del Benahavís Senior Masters, del Circuito Europeo Senior, que atrajo a este municipio a famosos jugadores mayores de 50 años. Bordering two of the Costa del Sol’s tourism heavyweights (Marbella and Estepona), Benahavís is a golf destination with its own character and many reasons for being included in a place of honour. In fact, Benahavís now has the third highest number of golf courses of any municipality in Spain, only topped by Marbella and Mijas. Relatively small in population (about 7,400 inhabitants, almost half of whom are foreign) but large in size (145 square kilometres), the municipality has 11 golf courses – 198 holes in total – distributed among eight clubs: Flamingos (54 holes), La Quinta (27), La Zagaleta (36), Atalaya (New Course, 18, even though only a small section of this club is located in the municipality), Marbella Club (18), Monte Mayor (18, temporarily closed), Los Arqueros (18) and El Higueral (9). In addition there is the Municipal Golf Academy, located near the town centre and connected to the fourstar Gran Hotel Benahavís, with a superb practice ground including a large bunker, approach area and putting green. Benahavís’s golf potential is immense, taking into account both its golf courses and residential-tourism complexes associated with golf and the possibility of further development in this sporting sphere.

The quality of its courses is indisputable, with several renowned designers leaving their imprint on the municipality’s golfing amenities, including Seve (Los Arqueros), Manuel Piñero (La Quinta) and Dave Thomas (Marbella Club Golf Resort).

On a sporting level, numerous major international events have been held in the municipality, amateur and professional. Since 2009, for example, La Quinta has been the venue for the Benahavís Senior Masters (part of the European Senior Tour), attracting many of the world’s leading over-50 golfers.

The same course hosted the Spanish Women’s Open (a Ladies European Tour event), while other editions have been held at Villa Padierna Golf Club (Flamingos and Alferini courses). Este bello municipio de montaña, cuyo bonito casco urbano de casas blancas está situado a sólo 7 kilómetros de la costa, es también conocido como el Comedor de la Costa del Sol.

TRADICIÓN GASTRONÓMICA. Quienes gusten de la buena mesa a buen seguro disfrutarán de la conocida tradición gastronómica de Benahavís. Y es que, como aquí, se come en muy pocos sitios, por su exquisita y variada cocina, así como por su amplia oferta de restaurantes y bares.

La tradición gastronómica de Benahavís es reconocida desde los años 70 y está basada en su cocina tradicional a partir de productos derivados del cerdo y la caza, introduciendo posteriormente la cocina internacional.

El plato más típico de Benahavís es el solomillo de cerdo aliñado, junto con el cordero, la carne de venado, el conejo, la perdiz y el cochinillo.

Benahavís cuenta además con una renombrada escuela de hostelería, la Escuela Hispanoárabe de Dieta Mediterránea.

Los campos de golf cuentan a su vez con casa club con comida internacional, y en los restaurantes del pueblo se pueden saborear los platos típicos de Benahavís y también delicias del mar, por su proximidad a la costa. Además el visitante disfrutará de un agradable tapeo en bares y bodeguitas que tanto abundan en el pueblo.

El casco urbano conserva algunos rasgos de su origen árabe al estilo de los pueblos blancos, que contrasta con el colorido de las montañas que le rodean. Como monumentos de interés cabe destacar el Castillo de Montemayor y un antiguo palacio del siglo XVI.

ESPACIOS NATURALES. Su privilegiada situación, rodeada de picos, sobre la falda de la Sierra de las Nieves, en plenas estribaciones de la Serranía de Ronda y a escasos kilómetros de Marbella y Estepona, municipios con los que linda, hacen de Benahavís un auténtico tesoro natural y turístico. Desde sus montes se divisan unas espectaculares y amplísimas vistas de la costa. Atraviesan su término municipal tres ríos: el Gua- hosted The Daily Telegraph Seniors Matchplay Championship – another European Senior Tour event –from 2002 to 2004.

the 1970s, and is based on classic cuisine predominantly using pork and game ingredients, with international dishes introduced at a later date. The most typical dish in Benahavís is seasoned pork sirloin (solomillo de cerdo), with lamb, venison, rabbit, partridge and suckling pig popular as well.

Benahavís is also home to the renowned catering school Escuela Hispanoárabe de Dieta Mediterránea. The golf courses’ own clubhouses offer international cuisine, while the village restaurants have seafood specialities as well as traditional Benahavís dishes – thanks to the municipality’s close proximity to the sea. In addition, visitors can savour appetising tapas in the many bars.

Nieves mountain range, in the midst of the Serranía de Ronda foothills and just a few kilometres from Marbella and Estepona (both bordering municipalities), Benahavís is a real natural and touristic treasure. Aquí está la Charca de las Mozas, una hoya en el lecho del río. La Junta de Andalucía tiene declarado este espacio Monumento Natural. ■
