Ms. Andalusia Manor

It didn’t take Pearlie McDougald long to establish herself as queen of The Manor. The spirited septuagenarian said she moved to Andalusia Manor to recover from an illness. Two months later, she was crowned queen. “They kept after me to enter the pageant,” she said. “So I finally said, ‘OK.’ ” McDougald, who was born Sept. 9, 1934, in Crenshaw County, moved to Andalusia with her parents in 1950. Like most everyone in her peer group, she said she worked at Alatex “until I got where I couldn’t.” She also has worked in private homes, but says “it’s about time to retire.” Asked about the biggest changes she’s witnessed, she said, “Pretty near everything has changed. Big changes.” She said she enjoys “being friends with people” and tries “to treat others like I wish to be treated.” That also is one of the secrets of her 59-year marriage, she said. She also enjoys working in the yard, and said she has never let television keep her from anything she needed to do. She is the mother of three children, two of whom, Harlan and Byron, are still living. She and her husband, the Rev. Archie McDougald, also have seven grandchildren. The McDougalds are members of House of God Church on Cadez Street.

Andalusia Manor held its annual pageant on April 3, 2014. Shown, from left, are: Ms. Linda Sessions, third runner-up, Mrs. Pearlie McDougald, Ms. Andalusia Manor; Ms. Shirley Wells, first runnerup; and Ms. Inez Carroll, second runner-up.

HUMAN RESOURCES The mission for the Human Resource Department is to employ the most dedicated and compassionate staff to care for our residents at Andalusia Manor. We strive to recruit and retain a qualified and diverse workforce to meet the varied needs of the organization. We work to train and develop the workforce toward performance that exceeds community expectations. Human Resources work hand in hand with our safety coordinator to ensure safety of all staff and residents at Andalusia Manor.

SOCIAL SERVICES The Social Service Department consists of one licensed social worker, Tamala Lee and two assistants, Allison Wells and Debbie Stacks. From day to day, we visit with residents to ensure that their needs are being met and we talk with residents about any concerns they may have. We are the voice of the residents, as we often communicate with nurses and other staff members to ensure that their concerns are addressed. We assist with finding misplaced items and setting up transportation arrangements for appointments when needed. We’re always just a phone call away!

ADMISSIONS The mission of the Admission department is to make our families feel comfortable when they come to Andalusia Manor to talk about placement. We encourage them to tour our facility to see what we have to offer. We are also available to answer questions about Medicare and Medicaid.

Activities

If you could spend a day with the activity department at Andalusia Manor you would find that life in a nursing home could be very different from what you might expect. Jan Bowers, activity director, and her staff work to meet the social, spiritual and recreational needs of the residents. The director has five assistants: Teresa Mosley, JoLinda Farris, Brenda Williams, Mallory Chandler, and Sandra Bradley. Because Andalusia Manor has more than 100 residents with diverse backgrounds and interests, a sincere effort is made to design an individual activity plan for each resident. An activity assistant visits residents who are bedridden and are unable to attend group activities several times a week. These are called “in room activities. The visits might consist of sharing memories, Bible or story reading, game playing, listening to music, or looking at pictures.

Group activities are planned by listening to the residents express themselves about what they enjoy. Many residents enjoy games such as bingo and dominoes so these are regularly included. Religious services are also included in the large group activities. Local ministers and church groups volunteer their time to lead in devotionals and sing-a-longs. Residents join in to sing the old hymns that they learned as children. Residents from Andalusia Manor are also encouraged to attend local community events. Recently about a dozen residents enjoyed going to the Senior Appreciation Day during the Spring Fling at the Kiwanis Building.

Dietary

Donna Whelan and Pamela White

Healthcare Services Group, Inc. proudly provides the residents of Andalusia Manor with a dietary program focused on providing appealing and nutritious meals with the diverse dietary needs of all residents foremost in mind. The dietary team is led by Donna Whelan, account manager, and Pamela White, kitchen manager. We believe in providing “Liberalized Therapeutic Diets” for all who utilize our dining services. This allows us to meet diet restrictions while still being able to offer healthy and tasty options. Traditional Southern fare is but one of the staples of our diverse menu. A main meal choice and an alternate meal selection are offered at each meal service. If the posted menu is not to a resident’s liking, no worry, we also offer alternative options such as: • Chef Salad • Grilled Cheese w/ Choice of Soup • Cheese Burger w/ Choice of Fries or Side Salad (Lettuce/ Tom/ Pickle) • Fresh Fruit Plate w/ Cottage Cheese • Cold Cut Sandwich w/ Chips (Lettuce/ Tom/ Pickle) • Chicken Fingers w/ Choice of Fries or Side Salad In addition to offering three balanced meals each day, we offer a variety of between meal and before bedtime snacks.

Proper nutrition is just one of the core components of service that drives this team. At Andalusia Manor we believe strongly that socialization plays a major role in all around health and happiness. We provide two dining rooms for residents to gather in for any meal that they wish to enjoy with friends and loved ones. Our dining rooms are designed to foster resident friendships, conversation, and the socialization that is so important during meal times. As a part of the Andalusia Manor family the dietary team enthusiastically participates in the planning and preparations for numerous celebrations of life throughout the year. Events such as the Valentines Day Dinner, our Mother’s Day Buffet, the Fall Festival and the annual Christmas Party, provide opportunities to prepare extra special meals and goodies for our residents. Each month Donna and Pam meet with the members of the Residents Dining Committee where new menu offerings, ideas and tactics to improve upon residents dining experiences are discussed and presented to the administration for consideration. We are here to serve our residents.
