A Marvelous Adventure

Dedicated to the Spanish and Portuguese Horse

IALHA PRESIDENT Julie Alonzo

IALHA PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE Author H. Jackson Brown, quoting his mother, once wrote, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.” In 2006, I set sail on a marvelous adventure, running for a regional director seat on the IALHA Board, under the capable guidance of President Malen Dell. In the years since then, I have seen the IALHA weather a variety of storms and navigate safely through the waves, thanks in large part to the very capable crews who have joined together to ensure safe passage. I cannot tell you how relieved “… I have seen the IALHA weather I am to be able to welcome Jania variety of storms and navigate ta Smith to the helm as she begins her first term as president safely through the waves, thanks in January 2015. in large part to the very capable In the end, as Kevin Kruse has written, “Life isn’t about crews who have joined together to getting and having. It’s about ensure safe passage.” giving and being.” The IALHA depends on the service of dedicated volunteers, generous people who give of their time, energy, creativity and resources so that the organization can not only exist, but thrive. To that end, please consider supporting the 2015 National Show, being held in the eastern part of the country for the first time this coming year. Support comes in many ways: through competing or volunteering at the show, by becoming a show sponsor, or even advertising in the show program. Contact Becky Brok (diamondbbrok@aol.com) for more information. Thank you for the memories, IALHA. And to the best “pirate crew” ever … arrrrg! Sail on, my friends, sail on! w AM

Show Dedication:

Bruce Howard, a living legend! The 2014 IALHA National Championship Show was dedicated to Bruce Howard, in recognition of the tremendous impact he has had on the IALHA and the show world in general. Although Bruce has been retired from training and showing for a number of years, his influence can still be seen in almost every aspect of the show. Bruce Howard served as a valued member of the United States Equestrian Federation’s Andalusian and Lusitano Committee for many years, where he was instrumental in helping to write the rules under which our shows are governed. He also served numerous terms on the IALHA Board of Directors and sat on numerous committees over the years. Bruce has previously been honored with the IALHA’s Professional Horseman of the Year award and has won national and regional championship titles in almost every class offered at IALHA shows. Perhaps best known for his stellar training and handling of halter and driving horses, Bruce’s record of under saddle wins is likewise impressive. We were delighted to dedicate this year’s National Show to Bruce Howard, a horseman of great integrity and passion, who helped set a very high bar for show-ring expectations. Bruce, your legacy lives on through the trainers and amateur owners you have influenced and the progeny of the horses whose careers you helped make. Thank you for all you have done for the breed and the Association!

2014 NATIONAL SHOW

RECAP The 2014 IALHA National Championship Show was once again streamed live over the Internet by AndalusianWorld.com. With the advent of live streaming, it’s quickly becoming evident that the reach of the show is not limited by geographic proximity to the event (rather fortunate given the public health concerns about Ebola in the Dallas-Fort Worth area being broadcast far and wide). This year’s video streaming reached 19,340 viewers in all. The top 10 countries watching the show

online were: the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Netherlands, France and New Zealand (in that order). “The staff were some of the best we’ve ever had,” said Malen Dell, a member of the show committee and competitor from Region 5. “They were efficient, friendly and organized, from early entries all the way to the end of the show. Check-out was painless and fast. I sure hope we see them again next year.” Howard Peet, show committee member and competitor from Region 1 agreed. “The atmosphere in the building was exciting and enthusiastic, the competition was fierce, and the camaraderie was at an alltime high.” “I really enjoyed the gathering on Saturday night,” said Erica Peet. “It was great to see so many people gathering to honor Bruce Howard, to whom the show was dedicated. Having that time to relax and visit before the last night’s classes was really a nice way to end the week.” Francine Dismukes said, “The chance to have a little leisure time between performances to sit and visit with one another was a real highlight of the show.”

www.ialha.org

First time competitor from Texas, Heather Perillo, reflected, “I came into this stressed out, somewhat panicked and feeling completely unprepared. As soon as we arrived Sunday evening, Julie Alonzo met us, made us feel very welcome and even took the time to show us around. We played around a bit on Monday, showed the girls around, met some wonderfully sweet and kind people, especially Twila Godinez, her crew, the awesome vendors at The Iberian Connection, and our fun and funny ‘neighbor’ Steve [Kutie]. The vast majority of folks were friendly, kind, helpful, generous and more than willing to help a newbie. SO AWESOME!” Our 2015 National Championship Show will be held at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va., Aug. 24-30. (move-in will be available on Sunday, Aug. 23). This is the site and the dates that have traditionally been used by the Eastern Regional Andalusian Horse Club (ERAHC) for their large regional show. The club decided to skip one year so they could throw their support behind having the National Show in the eastern part of the country for the first time in the history of the IALHA. The IALHA Show Committee has already started discussing ways to ensure that the 2015 show runs as smoothly as this year’s event. We hope you’ll join us! w AM

Kamiakin was born March 7, 2005, and spent his first two years building strength and character on the home ranch in Washington. His breeder, Ami remembers, “He was the first foal we had that had the white chrome on the end of his nose. Quite a beautiful colt, born on a nice, warm, sunny, spring morning. “What I liked about him as a youngster was his natural balance, great substance and bone and, of course, his movement,” explains Ami. “Kamiakin was always pleasant to be around. He spent his first two years just being a colt – the first eight months with his mum in the herd and later on with the other colts in big pastures. At a young age, he had such good rhythmic gaits. I was pleased that Katie bought him and that he went to such a good home!” Katie Hill purchased the stallion in 2007 when he was a two-yearold. Three different dressage trainers had the opportunity to work with Kamiakin while he was in Oregon: Angie Egberg, Danica Yates and Mija Paris. Danica showed him in his first rated dressage shows as a five-yearold. Mija had him in 2011 and showed him Training and First Level. Owner Katie Hill took Kamiakin to the 2011 Celebration in Las Vegas, where he won Absolute Champion of Functionality, High Point PRE and High Point Dressage. When owner Katie Hill found out that her family was moving to the Netherlands in late 2011, her first priority was to get Kam settled. “Originally I took him to Susan Treabess to market for sale, as there was no way we could financially or emotionally afford continuing to pursue his career from so far away,” Katie reminisces. “Susan immediately saw potential in him, and a few months later, instead of selling Kam, we gave him to her to use as a competition horse. Susan and I are now co-owners of Kam, which allows me to stay involved in his life on the fringes but affords Susan the ability to make the day-to-day decisions about his care, training, etc.” And apparently, the decisions that Susan has been making are paying off! Earlier this year, Kamiakin and Susan qualified to represent the United

States as part of the U.S. Para-Equestrian Team competing in the World Equestrian Games, in Normandy, France, Aug. 23-Sept. 7. When asked about the horse, Susan simply glows. “Let’s see, where do I start? I can’t say enough good things about Burger. He’s a wonderful horse. He’s fun to ride and train, super smart and a love bug to boot. He’s so charismatic. Here in Germany, the barns owner’s wife (obviously German) was gaga for him, as was the Indonesian dressage and jumping team who were also training at our facility,” says Susan. “He’s just that type of horse; you instantly love him. “For me, it was love at first sight. I knew he would be something the first day we watched him go,” Susan continues. “I was pregnant the first year we had him, which ended up being good because Eva King, my assistant trainer, was able to take time in developing his hind end, core, and back. “My son was born in August of 2012, and I began showing Kam that fall, with his first WEG qualifier in spring of 2013. I also showed him on the open able-bodied dressage circuit at Third Level, where he consistently scored in the high sixties and low seventies,” says Susan. “We finished out 2013 with 4th overall in the professional Third Level championship class of 19 horses, which included Olympic riders. “This past year, we focused on his FEI training and have been concentrating on the WEG. My coach, renowned U.S. team rider Dennis Callin, has been visiting from the UK every eight weeks for the past year, and we have seen extraordinary development in Kam,” Susan explains. “He is now ready to show Prix St. Georges and Intermediare 1 and I1 and is schooling Grand Prix. For being just nine, I’m very pleased with his development, and Kam is very proud of himself!” IALHA is very proud to recognize Kamiakin as our 2014 Purebred Horse of the Year.

Reina Amberina

Reina Amberina, a smoky buckskin mare, was born in November 1998 and was purchased by Amy Star as a yearling because she had the look of on “old soul” in her eye. She was started at three years old but didn’t really come into her own until she was eight years old. Reina is a Half-Lusitano by Odin, out of a Half-Andalusian mare, Morning Star. Reina has been trained exclusively by Amy Star and shown by Amy and Summer Star. Reina has competed at the IALHA National Show and regional shows and a few of the titles she has earned include: National Champion Half-Andalusian Stock Horse, National Champion Half-Andalusian Best Movement, National

Champion Half-Andalusian Western Equitation Youth, National Champion Half-Andalusian English Equitation Youth, Half-Andalusian Working Equitation Year-End High Point, Half-Andalusian 4-H High Point, and Half-Andalusian Working Western Year-End High Point. Even though she’s only 15 hands, Reina’s prominent dapples, presence and baroque characteristics make her stand out in any company. Reina is the epitome of an “all-around” horse. She has participated in parades, ranch horse competitions, ranch roping, working cowhorse, working equitation, pack trips, musical freestyle exhibitions, and she even drives in harness. She is kind and steady but responds with brio and energy when asked. She has raised four beautiful foals: Xander Star (bay colt), Azulito (grey colt), Divinia (grey filly) and Gaia (smoky black filly). “I feel truly blessed to have Reina Amberina as my friend and teacher, she is a once in a lifetime horse,” says Amy.

Professional Horseman of the Year:

Professional Horsewoman of the Year:

Erica Peet

Erica Peet, Professional Horsewoman of the Year.

Erica Peet had the horse bug ever since she was little but never had the means to do anything about it. Her path with horses began in 2002, when she was 22, while attending college. It was then that she met Howard Peet. Lucky for her, Howard needed an assistant, so she worked for him in exchange for lessons. Once she started, she never looked back! It’s been 12 years now, and she can’t believe the ride it has been. From her first show in 2003 doing a trail class with a Quarter Horse mare named Honey Chex, to now, where she gets to work with the most amazing breed of all, the Andalusian! Erica has shown at a variety of shows put on by the IALHA, The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse, ANCCE, USPRE, regional breed shows, dressage shows, as well as been a part of horse fairs and exhibitions around the country. She has shown in halter, driving, saddle seat, hunt seat, dressage, functionality classes and best movement classes. She is also very proud to have taught and coached her amateur and youth riders to become great riders and competitors, and she enjoys being a part of the clinics that she and her husband put on. Her accomplishments include many regional and national titles, and she was recognized by the IALHA as Rookie Trainer of the Year in 2008. Erica would like to send out a huge thank you to all of the people that have supported and believed in her: Howard, Cecil Jorgensen, Rothrock Andalusians, Dawn Stroup, Spanish Legacy Andalusians, Silverstar Ranch, Teri and Scott Young, Saul’s Andalusians, Terry Waechter, Kristen Dennison, Julie Alonzo, Yeguada Martin, Xavier Farms, Barbara Currie, Maria O’Brien, and of course, her family! A number of people nominated Erica for this award. Some of their comments included, “Erica’s quiet presence sometimes gets overshadowed by Howard, yet she has an incredible work ethic, an impressive record of preparing horses for the show ring and winning numerous awards in a variety of disciplines, and a long history of behind-the-scenes contributions to the IALHA. Erica has served as a wonderful ambassador for the breed and the Association at so many different venues: fairs, horse expos, shows, clinics, public outreach events ... you name it, she has contributed her time and knowledge. Erica epitomizes the qualities one would hope to find in a professional: integrity, responsibility, thoughtfulness, competence and class. She is very well-deserving of this award.”

Michael Vermaas, Professional Horseman of the Year.

Michael started riding in the Netherlands in 1976. He moved to Portugal in 1979 and studied with some of the finest classical riders, including Luis Valenca Rodrigues, Don Jose Athayde and Lord Loch, while running his own stable and showing in both the jumpers and dressage disciplines primarily on Lusitanos. He was part of the Luis Valenca riding team and performed at the Salon du Cheval in Paris, France and the Equitana in Essen, Germany, representing the Lusitano breed. Michael has worked in Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and has been in the U.S. since 2005. He holds Portuguese and British certifications and is one of only three WEIAUSA U.S. judges for working equitation, and he is a USDF Bronze Medal recipient. Michael and his fiancee Krystalynn Young own Skeleton Key Sporthorses in San Antonio, Texas, where they train and teach riders and horses in a variety of disciplines. His students have competed in Two-Star three-day events, Prix St. Georges in dressage, and up to 4’3” in jumpers. Michael has been a regular participant and winning competitor in IALHA shows throughout Texas for a number of years, and the IALHA is proud to recognize the impact of his work with this award.

Amateur Horsewoman of the Year:

Kendra Martland By Kendra Martland

Kendra Martland, Amateur Horsewoman of the Year.

I have been riding since the age of eight, and in 1994 I was first introduced to the Andalusian. Milagro Primero, a Spanish Norman gelding owned by Highland Stables of Cochrane, Alberta, was the horse that got it all started. I had no idea at that time that the Andalusian would turn into a lifelong passion. After riding Primero for a couple years, I was given the opportunity to observe and take part in training another Spanish

AWARDS Norman, a mare named Milagro Segunda. I competed in various small shows, did some demonstrations, and rode in parades representing the Andalusian horse, after which I attended college for four years. As soon as I was finished with college, I set out looking for my own Spanish Norman. I came across Sport Horse Canada, owned by Bernice Parker and Allen Steer of McTaggart, Saskatchewan. Bernice took the time to help me find my perfect horse. After looking at many and riding a few, she suggested “Monteque,” a four-year-old Spanish Norman they had raised. Sight unseen, I brought “Monty” home later that year, and since then we have accomplished more together than I could have ever dreamed. Monty has taught me patience, perseverance and, above all, why I love the Andalusian so much. He is patient, intelligent, sensitive and forgiving of the mistakes I make. I have been taking dressage lessons with Val Hellerud since I bought him, as well as some jumping clinics put on by Kerry Marit. In 2012 and 2013, I competed at local gold-level dressage shows with him, consistently placing at the top of our classes. In 2014, I decided to branch out. I took him to our first hunter show, where he not only turned heads because of his sheer size at 17.2 hands, but also placed consistently well against seasoned warmbloods. Wherever I go, I get compliments on how quiet and willing Monty is and how he seems to truly enjoy his job. I had the amazing opportunity in July to once again represent the Andalusian in two parades. First, the Canada Day Parade in Canmore, Alberta, and second, the Calgary Stampede Parade in Calgary, Alberta, which is broadcast all over North America. Again Monty proved to me why I love the Andalusian and Spanish Norman so much. He took it all in stride and acted as if he had been a parade horse his whole life. In July 2014, we competed in a local dressage show at First Level and then the next weekend traveled to Chilliwack, British Columbia, to compete in the PAALH Canadian Andalusian Championship Show. We rode in every class possible, and he took champion or reserve in classes such as dressage suitability, western pleasure, English pleasure, show hack, English hunt seat and First Level dressage. I plan in the coming years to take Monty to the National Championship show in Texas, and continue to compete in hunter and dressage shows. We have two more shows planned for this year and one more parade. Without a horse like Monty, I would not have become the horsewoman I am today! I have spent the last 10 years around the Andalusian horse, and I cannot envision a better breed to be involved with. Monty will certainly not be my last! I truly owe everything to Bernice and Allen for knowing that Monty would be the perfect horse for me and allowing him to be a part of my life!

Amateur Horseman of the Year:

Gary Camp

Gary Camp, from Region 2, came into the horse world later in life but has made up for that late start with his incredible enthusiasm and determination to learn and enjoy his horses. He is a regular participant at all Region 2 events (shows, clinics, expos, etc.). Even if his work schedule prevents him from bringing a horse sometimes, he is always ready to lend

a hand. Gary not only shows his Half-Andalusian mare in halter, western pleasure, hunt seat, and dressage suitability at IALHA horse shows, he also shows her in working equitation (he recently won Reserve Champion for Working Equitation Introductory Level at the Far West Championship Show in Oregon). Gary is a tireless ambassador for the IALHA, the Andalusian and Half-Andalusian. He has used his vacation time from work for the past two years to fly to Texas to volunteer day and night at the National Show for the entire length of the show. Clear-headed, incredibly giving, and an enthusiastic amateur horseman, Gary is a well-deserving winner of the 2014 Amateur Horseman of the Year award.

Youth of the Year:

Sydney Croasmun and Summer Star

This year, the IALHA decided to honor two of our active youth members: Summer Star and Sydney Croasmun.

Summer Star:

Youth of the Year (Co-Winner)

Summer Star and Reina Amberina in 2013. Photo courtesy of Kevin Kidder, AndalusianWorld.

Summer Star was selected as one of the two 2014 IALHA Youth of the Year honorees. Summer is 10 years old and already an accomplished horsewoman. She began competing in IALHA horse shows in 2009, where she won the National Championship Walk Trot Equitation class on her tall chestnut mare, Xila Star. She has since competed in the IALHA National Show in 2011, 2012 and 2013, winning numerous champion and reserve champion titles on three different horses: Xila Star, Lucero de Soria and Reina Amberina. Summer loves to go to the IALHA National Show to compete, and she volunteers in a variety of ways, including the ribbon presentations, membership booth and silent auction. She says that she would rather go to the National Show than go on vacation. When she competes at local competitions, she is proud to tell everyone about her Andalusian horse and how wonderful a breed it is. Summer is a dedicated competitor and practices her riding three to four days a week. The horse she currently rides is a 17-year-old buckskin mare named Reina Amberina. Summer is practicing primarily for working equitation, although she also works on hunt seat equitation, western equitation and is starting to jump. Some day she would like to breed, start and train her own horse to be a national champion, and she plans on breeding Reina in the near future. Summer is a fifth grader at Sunrise Drive Elementary in Tucson, Ariz. Summer plays the flute in the fifth grade band and is a member of the Arizona Riders 4-H Club. Summer’s other hobby is to bake homemade pies. Her favorite recipes she has created are for pear/mint pie, pineapple pie and blueberry pie.

AWARDS Sydney Croasmun:

Youth of the Year (Co-Winner)

For the past two years, both Lisa and Gary used a full week of vacation time from work to fly to Fort Worth, Texas, where they worked nonstop as volunteers – transporting officials from the airport and hotels to the facility, coordinating the food for officials and volunteers, assisting with unpacking and repacking the storage locker, setting up ribbons and trophies, assisting with setup of the arena for dressage and working equitation, and the list goes on. Back home, the two can be found at pretty much every IALHA-related event in the Northwest, including clinics, expos, shows, camping trips, etc.

Breeder of the Year:

Mario Contreras, Mario’s Andalusians

Horses from Mario’s Andalusians read like a Who’s Who list from the Andalusian breed. Their champions include:

Bred by Mario Contreras at the ranch: • Brioso MA - (Escamillo x Sonaja II) Triple Crown National Champion (Colt, Junior, Senior) and Reserve Champion Best Movement Sydney Croasmun, Youth of the Year.

Sixteen-year-old Sydney Croasmun started riding at the age of 11 with a spirited older National Showhorse named Mr. Trippit. Under Mr. Trippit’s careful guidance, she gained enough confidence to start competing in jumpers and gymkhana. When it was time for Mr. Trippit to retire, Sydney began training with Lauren LaVine, learning different disciplines and competing in all-around competitions. Lauren saw her potential and introduced Sydney to her stallion, Fabuloso AF. It was love at first ride! Learning multiple disciplines has been one of Sydney’s favorite parts of the Andalusian breed. Under Lauren’s guidance, Fabuloso AF and Sydney have grown into a strong team, winning Youth High Point awards in every Region 1 show they have competed in as well as winning multiple dressage shows. Sydney also competed in the Saddleseat and Western League representing her high school, helping to bring home the overall league trophy for her school last year, and she is a two-year recipient of the USEF High School Athlete letter program. With all the excitement of shows, she still loves to hit the trail with Mr. Trippit who, at 31, is still teaching her. The entire Croasmun family enjoys being part of the Andalusian community and looks forward to many more years of continued success.

El Premio de Merito

Carina HGF By Eric D. Smith Photo courtesy of Captured Moment Photography Carina HGF is a six-year-old bright bay mare bred by Kim Boyer of Hampton Green Farm in Fruitport, Mich., and was acquired by Eric D. Smith as a three-year-old. She has been trained and ridden by Eric’s wife, Cindy Ramirez-Smith, in the disciplines of eventing, hunter/jumper and dressage. Carina’s dressage training started immediately upon her arrival in California in 2012. Twice she scored in excess of 75 percent at Training Level, and she won the coveted Regalado II Perpetual Trophy for High Point Purebred Dressage Horse that year. However, it has been her performance in overfences classes, in general, and in three-day eventing, in particular, that is unprecedented for a purebred Spanish horse, especially a mare. This year, Carina placed in the top five of every three-day event in which she competed, including a first place finish at the Fall Horse Trials Twin Rivers Ranch and a third place finish at the Novice Level at the United States Eventing Association Area VI Regional Championships. At any level of eventing, a three-day horse trial is extremely stressful – both for the horse and the rider. Even if your dressage is stellar on day one, you could have a refusal on cross country on day two or have a rail down in stadium jumping on day three. This is always present and foremost on your mind. Since scoring is cumulative over three days, there is as much pressure on the leader to keep the lead as there is on the rest of the field to move into the lead. Carina’s temperament, focus and determination are some of the attributes that are well-suited for eventing. In the high-octane world of eventing – a world dominated by thoroughbreds and warmbloods –we are often complimented on Carina’s bold and confident nature. Next year we plan to show Carina at Second Level in dressage and move her up to Training Level in eventing. Our goal is to have her compete at the American Eventing Championships in Texas next fall. We would like to thank the IALHA for this award, and we graciously accept it on Carina’s behalf.

El Premio de Oro

Aragon GAF By Cynthia Roberts Photo courtesy of All Creatures Photography Bred by Glen Aryn Farm, Aragon GAF possesses presence, very correct conformation, movement, wonderful temperament, talent and work ethic. Aragon is blessed with the full package. His bloodlines are a blend of some of the oldest Spanish breeders – Guardiola, Romero Benitez and Yeguada Militar, among others. Aragon’s powerful pedigree contains international Olympic dressage medalists (Evento and Oleaje) as well as conformation champions with Qualified Status on both sides. Our extraordinary distinguished gentleman is accomplished in halter, movement and performance – open dressage. He has earned champion titles from IALHA, both at IALHA regional and national shows, ANCCE and FPSH as early as a yearling and has consistently continued to do so throughout his career. Aragon also won the IALHA Arnold Houser Trophy for High Point Halter Horse in 2010 and is a two-time earner of the Regalado II Perpetual Trophy for High Point Purebred Dressage Horse. He is also a wonderful ambassador for our breed, making new friends at every venue. Competing in open dressage, Aragon continues to excel with scores as high as 77 percent. He is the highest scoring PRE Andalusian in his division in open competition. This year, Aragon is in the top 20 for Adequan/USDF awards nationally for open dressage, earned the IALHA El Premio de Oro Lifetime Achievement Award at the tender age of five, and the USPRE COPA Dressage Award, which qualifies him for SICAB. He will be part of the USPRE Dressage Team in 2015. We couldn’t be more proud of our distinguished gentleman, and we look forward to next year’s competition season. Aragon will be standing for the 2015 season at Glen Aryn Farm. Last but not least, many thanks to our family, trainers, friends and well-wishers for all of your support! Issue 3 | 2014

Josie Croasmun and A Fabulous Dream John & Joanne Asman Award for Half-Andalusian Youth Exhibitor When 14-year-old Josie Croasmun started training with Lauren LaVine two years ago, she was fortunate enough to meet Lauren's three-month-old filly, A Fabulous Dream. There was an instant connection between the two girls, and they have been inseparable ever since. “Dreamy” is one of the most popular subjects of Josie’s Instagram account – littlepaintmare. With more than 6,000 Instagram followers, Josie promotes the Andalusian and Half-Andalusian breed and also works as a brand ambassador for Valencia Sport Saddlery and The Pony Box. “Social media gives me a chance to let the world know about this magnificent breed,” says Croasmun. In addition to showing Dreamy, Josie enjoys learning about Liberty. The two of them have a very special bond. Look for Dreamy and Josie in the show ring in the coming seasons! Sydney Croasmun

Luis & Anita Alfaro Award for High Point Youth Exhibitor: Western Luis & Anita Alfaro Award for High Point Youth Exhibitor: English Sydney Croasmun has always been moved by beautiful images. It is no surprise that when she saw Fabuloso AF, she instantly fell in love with him. Having come from the hunter/jumper circuit, she welcomed the change to the multiple disciplines that the Andalusian breed offers. Under her trainer, Lauren LaVine, she developed the skills for many different styles of riding that define her reputation as a rider. In the 2013-2014 show season, Sydney won every Youth High Point award in Region 1 and was able to ride to four National Titles at the IALHA National Show. When not on horseback, Sydney can most often be found behind the lens of a camera, capturing video and still images of horses and their riders for her business, SC Equine Photography. Medeterraneo’s Venezia Open Equestrian Award

Medeterraneo’s Venezia, also known as “Vinny,” is a three-year-old PRE Andalusian filly by Medeterraneo V out of Espanola 1988. She is the first Andalusian to be owned by veterinarian Dr. Brenda Forsythe of Santa Maria, Calif., who is also her rider and trainer. She was started under saddle in October of last year and spent the 2014 show season building low-pressure experience at local shows in hunt seat, trail, stock seat and dressage seat pleasure and equitation performance classes. Her elegance, versatility, cool temperament and natural athleticism made her a favorite with both audiences and judges, resulting in several day-end and seasonal high point awards at the local level in the dressage and versatility divisions. Dr. Forsythe is delighted to have earned this award and looks forward to introducing Venezia to rated dressage shows and perhaps to the Iberian show ring as well in 2015. w AM Left: Brenda Forsythe and Medeterraneo’s Venezia. IALHA-registered horses led the field at the inaugural Haras Cup, a national championship event for the Working Equitation International Association of the USA (WEIAUSA). After both the Dressage Trial on day one and the Ease of Handling Trial on day two, IALHA-registered horses were in first place in the youth division (assuring a win for Diablo DC and owner/rider Madison Waller, as no speed trial was offered for youth) and the open division Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and International Levels. Incredibly fast speed trial performances by five Australian Stock Horses enabled Sandhaven Promise, owned by Kellee Campbell and ridden by Dori Johnson, to squeak by Barquillero LXIV, owned by Saul and Sandra Agauyo and ridden by Erica Peet, to win the 22-entry Novice Level. Erica and Barquillero LXIV ended the competition with 59 points (and $2,500), while overall Novice Level Champion Sandhaven Promise walked away with 60 points (and $5,000). Day three’s speed trial clinched the victory in the Intermediate Level for Conde, a Lusitano owned by Marilyn Hite of Sierra Nevada Lusitanos and ridden by Carlos Carneiro. Conde finished the competition with 21 points total (and $7,000). He finished four points ahead of Canadian rider Teala Caton on the Half-Andalusian gelding Marshmallow, who made the trek all the way from Alberta for the competition. Her prize winnings of $4,000, no doubt, helped cover those travel expenses! In all, seven entries competed at the Intermediate Level. Carlos Carneiro continued his winning streak at the Advanced Level, competing in a field of five on another Sierra Nevada Lusitano, Bethoven do Lis, and coming in first in both dressage and ease of handling and third in speed to take home the $10,000 first place purse. Daniel Garcia on his horse, Temprano, had tied for first in ease of handling and won the speed phase to finish second in the Advanced Level, earning $5,000 in prize money. In the International Exhibition division, Tiago Ernesto rode Diablo DC, owned by Madison Waller, to a first place finish. He also came in second out of four on Cossaco, a Lusitano owned by Haras Dos Cavaleiros. Plans are already underway for an exciting second year of competition, where, hopefully, we will once again see IALHA horses demonstrating their prowess on the working equitation field. w AM
