The Results are In: The National Show was a Success The dust has begun to settle after the IALHA’s National Championship Show which was held in late August at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va. This issue of Andalusian magazine highlights the show, the horses and the attendees. Overall, I believe the show was a success. The official tally for the show was 627 entries, with 146 unique horses in attendance. The IALHA Board of Directors seated in 2013 set out to move the National Show to various regions. The goal was to create a new venue so that more IALHA members could participate in a National Show. After years in Fort Worth, Texas, this was a huge undertaking. The board of directors and I want to especially acknowledge the hard work, dedication, volunteering and donations made by the Eastern Region Andalusian Horse Club (ERAHC) members. to help make the 2015 IALHA National Championship Show a great success. It isn’t easy to try and blend two different groups with different ways of doing things into a cohesive group that produces success. Thank you, ERAHC members. The 2016 National Championship Show will be held at the Salt Lake County Horse Park in South Jordan, Utah, Sept. 1419, 2016. Make your plans now to attend, bring your horses, bring your friends, bring your friends’ horses and prepare to have a great time. I am currently in the midst of finalizing the agenda for the October board meeting. There are many subjects to be discussed, areas in which the IALHA needs improvement, and work to be done. We have many exciting things on the horizon that we hope will improve your experience with the IALHA. These things cannot be done with only a few volunteer members. We need you! I’d like to ask each of you to think about areas that you would like to see changed in the IALHA and how you can use your unique abilities to help. The IALHA, like many volunteer organizations, needs dedicated volunteers for things to move forward but also to just be maintained. If you would like to get involved with the Stallion Auction, the National Show, our magazine Andalusian, our youth program, the website, or any other area, your expertise is welcome. Please contact me personally at momfanega@hotmail.com. Let’s find a place you can get involved and make the IALHA a better organization. Enjoy this issue of Andalusian magazine, and enjoy your horses. w AM Blessings, Janita Smith IALHA President

As the years went by, Bella continued to improve and show up to the regional and national shows to showcase her talent. She has racked up a very impressive amount of blues: 43 first places at regional shows and 27 National and Reserve Champion awards in Dressage Suitability, Western, Youth, Halter, and Costume, in both open and amateur divisions in only 10 shows. On top of all her first places, Bella has been Champion of Show multiple times as well as High Point Horse of Show, and she has taken two junior riders to High Point of Show Youth three times. She has brought youth to High Point at the National Show twice, and has been the IALHA Versatility Horse at the National Show. She holds numerous USEF Regional and Reserve Champion awards in Performance Horse, Open Hunt Seat, Amateur Hunt Seat, Specialty and Youth. On top of being an amazing show horse, Bella has also proven to be a confidence builder, a best friend, and a true teacher, helping advance multiple youth riders up the levels. Most recently at the 2015 IALHA National Show, she took a 6-year-old girl, who had only ridden a very small pony before, on her back just moments before the 10 and under walk trot class. Everyone who witnessed the class saw Bella go from winning a dressage suitability class to doing a slow jog for a trot to help her new little rider. Her owner hopes that Bella’s recognition as IALHA Purebred Horse of the Year will encourage more mare owners to realize that our mares belong in the show ring, not just the breeding field. Half-Andalusian Horse of the Year
Half-Andalusian Horse of the Year: Sonrisa TLM
Sonrisa TLM received a multitude of nominations for the Half-Andalusian Horse of the Year honor, and considering her quality and active career, it is no surprise. This 9-year-old mare owned by Elizabeth Morosani is a regular participant at regional shows as well as at rated dressage shows in her home state of North Carolina and further afield. Each year she has been under saddle, she has won the High Point Dressage Horse Award, and in 2013 and 2014 she won the USDF All-Breeds Award at Training Level and First Level in both amateur and open divisions, and this year she is pursuing the same goal at Second Level. In 2013, Sonrisa TLM and Elizabeth also won the Cristiani Perpetual Trophy for High Point Half-Andalusian Dressage Horse. Besides being a great show horse, Sonrisa is amazing on trails and can jump anything. One of the people who nominated Sonrisa TLM glowed about her personality, “She is not only beautiful and well-kept at all times, but she also displays a wonderful attitude at home and at shows. She is also a true competitor—she knows when she is being judged, and she shines in the spotlight. Sonrisa TLM is a wonderful representative of the breed.” Another commented, “I have followed a Half-Andalusian mare named Sonrisa TLM competing in USDF Dressage shows as well 12 |

as our local riding club, and I think she is an ideal example of what one would want in a Half-Andalusian. She has a great presence in any ring, excellent manners, and is pleasant to be around in the barn. She has the ability to do anything her rider asks and can be ridden by the most advanced to the least knowledgeable rider. I believe her show record is vast with great scores against some big warmbloods, which is not easy to do given her unusual breed cross of Andalusian/Percheron. I think she would be an ideal candidate for your Half-Andalusian Horse of the Year Award.” We couldn’t agree more. Congratulations, Sonrisa TLM, on your Half-Andalusian of the Year Award!

Professional Horsewoman of the Year: Karen Rock
A familiar face, not only in her own Region 3, but also in Regions 5 and 6, where she has successfully campaigned a variety of horses over the years. Karen Rock is admired not only for her talent as a horse trainer, but also for her outgoing personality and willingness to help those new to the breed. Karen has a very impressive show record. Horses that Karen trains consistently win, not www.ialha.org
only at local shows, but also at the regional and national level, and they have won numerous USEF National Horse of the Year titles. In addition, Karen has nurtured one of the most successful youth riders in the IALHA (Katie Berger) over the years, helping her gain incredibly valuable experience with a variety of horses. A number of people nominated Karen for this honor, commenting on her remarkable success with a variety of horses and across multiple disciplines. They also mentioned the many times in which Karen has gone out of her way to welcome newcomers and to make sure they are prepared to do their best when they enter the ring. Karen, you are truly an inspiration!

After attending a four-year university and obtaining a degree in political science, Bill decided that horses would be his life career. He learned his trade by apprenticeship with the best trainers he could find in the various breeds and disciplines from coast to coast. Bill came to California to serve as performance trainer at El Camino Ranch before joining the Tilley Andalusian team. He has already made a profound impact on the Andalusian/ Lusitano horse show world as well as the open driving community. In his tenure, Bill has already produced many Grand National Champion and National Champion titles in a variety of disciplines. We are honored to recognize him as IALHA’s 2015 Professional Horseman of the Year.

IALHA members in Region 1, and those who have attended the National Show for several years, have cheered his victories in western pleasure, saddle seat and dressage classes. And, of course, anyone who follows the open driving circuit, particularly in the western part of the United States, is likely familiar with Bill Deeney, this year’s IALHA Professional Horseman of the Year. From that illustrious start, she dove in with incredible enthusiasm. She bought her first breeding facility, in Hemet, Calif., in 1997, and in 2012, moved to her current location, the beautiful Fieldstone Farm in Thousand Oaks, Calif., where she and her horses enjoy serene vistas over a mile-long, cross-country driving path, competition-grade riding and driving arenas. Nadine takes her job as ambassador for the breed seriously. In 2004, she and her husband Bill established a permanent endowment at the University of Southern California to ensure that the USC Mascot, Traveler, will always be of Iberian descent. In addition, she maintains an exquisite vintage carriage collection on display in her carriage museum, and her IALHA-registered horses are regular winners at open driving shows, combined driving events, and a variety of driving and under-saddle classes at breed shows. Horses she has bred are making their mark in a variety of disciplines, and we look forward to seeing them continue to showcase the versatility and athleticism of the breed. The recipient of the USEF’s Bill Robinson Trophy in 2010 and one of eight candidates for the Federation’s Equestrian of the Year title that year, Nadine is no stranger to awards. She is also no stranger to hard work and to volunteering her time for the benefit of the Association. In 2015, Nadine returned to the IALHA’s Board of Directors, when she agreed to accept an appointment to a seat recently vacated when another director moved out of the region. We hope you will join us in congratulating the IALHA’s 2015 Amateur Horsewoman of the Year: Nadine Tilley!

Josie Croasmun, a very active youth who lives in California, has only been competing in IALHA shows for two seasons, but she has already made quite a name for herself. A talented horsewoman, high-achieving student and all-around great person, she is always willing to lend a hand. Josie is not only a competitor but also an owner! Josie will compete this season on her 3-year-old filly registered with the IALHA. Josie loves to show and is a great youth advocate of the breed, consistently promoting the horses, shows and IALHA community on social media, where she has a following of more than 6,500 horse-admiring members. Congratulations, Josie, on being honored as the 2015 IALHA Youth of the Year!

Volunteer of the Year
Volunteer of the Year: Terrye Branson
Terrye Branson’s behind-the-scenes work for the IALHA may not be seen by many, but the fruit of her efforts have benefited every member of the Association. Terrye has served many roles within the IALHA: secretary, vice president, chair of numerous committees, and member of even more. She is always ready to step in and help with the heavy lifting. Long before she was on the board, Terrye volunteered countless hours to sort out the IALHA’s insurance policies, researching options and making sure that the Association and its assets that members depend on are sufficiently covered. If you were at the National Show last year, you might have admired the beautiful quilt which Terrye and her family made and donated to the silent auction. It was one of the biggest draws and worth every penny it brought. When the online IALHA Exchange was started a few years ago, Terrye offered to help moderate the online forum, a task that she has shouldered almost single-handedly for well over a year now. And, earlier this year, when we lost a key person responsible for processing memberships, Terrye jumped in to pick up the pieces, helping to ease the transition in what could have been a very rough patch.
16 |
Andalusian
Issue 3 | 2015
Terrye’s volunteerism is even more remarkable when one realizes that she does all this while balancing a very intensive full-time job as an insurance specialist and running Hooves and Hounds Rescue and Rehab Sanctuary, a privately-funded organization whose mission statement is, “To provide a safe environment for neglected or abused canines and equines that need a place to rehabilitate or be in foster care until a permanent home can be established for them. To work with like and assist like-minded animal assistance organizations and assist them with providing sanctuary and rehabilitation for canines and equines until permanent homes can be established for them.” Breeder of the Year
Breeder of the Year: Alex Dees, Cavalo Real Lusitanos
For years, Cavalo Real Lusitanos has been operating quietly in the background, producing high-quality Lusitanos with great minds and incredible athleticism from the rugged pastures of eastern Oregon’s high-desert country. Discerning buyers have been making the trek to the ranch for years to choose from the select colts and fillies that Cavalo Real has available each year. www.ialha.org
Breeder of the Year
Cavalo Real owner Alex Dees has studied the breed extensively, journeying regularly to Portugal and Brazil over the years to learn more about breed standards and purchase key horses to enhance her very impressive foundation stock. Her focus on remaining true to the APSL standards for the Lusitano is evident in the horses she produces. Cavalo Real-bred horses are making an impact throughout North America, not only as breeding stock, but also as athletic performance horses. Two Cavalo Real-bred horses garnered impressive wins at the 2014 National Show, with 3-year-old Gazelle CR capturing the Reserve Grand Champion Junior Mare title in a large class of 11 and Gaston CR capturing the National Champion Dressage Sport Horse Prospect, Colts 3 and Under in a very competitive class of five.
In the very near future, we expect to see additional Cavalo Real horses posing with their championship honors. Be on the lookout for Galante CR, now owned by Reta Conner in Arizona, who is making his debut in the working equitation arena this year. Planning a career in both working equitation and dressage, Hamlet CR, makes his home with owner Nicole Grous in Olympia, Wash. Dressage purists can look forward to watching Irreal CR develop under the able guidance of his owner/trainer Pippa Sowers in Oregon. These and other fine horses will continue to cement the Cavalo Real legacy in North American Lusitano history. Congratulations, Alex Dees, on being named 2015 IALHA Breeder of the Year for your excellent breeding program at Cavalo Real Lusitanos, and thank you for doing your part to bring excellent horses to the world stage. w AM Issue 3 | 2015

The International Andalusian and Lusitano Horse Association (IALHA) found a warm welcome at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va., the venue for the 2015 IALHA National Championship Horse Show. In all, 627 entries competed at the show, with 107 horses entered in the National Championship classes and 71 entries in the Open-Breed Dressage Show. These numbers are slightly better than the last few years at the Fort Worth venue, with about the same number of horses entered in the breed-restricted National Championship classes and more entries in the Open-Breed Dressage Show, which helped boost the overall financial support for the event.

2015 National Show Recap
The show, which moved from its traditional venue in Fort Worth, Texas, to the eastern part of the United States for the first time in decades, welcomed both veteran National-level competitors and those making their Nationals debut. Competitors and show organizers alike raved about the quality of the classes. “The quality of the competitors was amazing,” said Karin Hansen, who traveled all the way from Eugene, Ore., to take part in the week-long event. “It was definitely the most competitive event that I’ve ever been to, and people really seemed to be having fun and were helping each other out.” With 18 entries, the National Championship Andalusian/Lusitano English Pleasure Hunt Seat Open class was the largest at the show, up from the prior five years’ average of 12 horses. The winner, Icaro XXIV, ridden by Hannah Lisec for owner Martha Ann Lott, narrowly beat out Reserve Champion RA Dulcineya, ridden and owned by Kimberly David and Top Five finisher Xenophon, ridden by Shelley Van den Neste for owner Sandra L. Werner to take home the Champion trophy. A close second in terms of number of entries, this year’s National Championship Andalusian/Lusitano Dressage Hack Open, with 16, far exceeded the previous five-year average of seven entries and thrilled spectators with the incredible presence of the horses competing. Zerbino Interagro, ridden by John Zopatti for owner Johnny Robb took home the National Champion trophy, while Aragon GAF was the Reserve Champion, with Felicitas Von Neumann Cosel riding for owners Cynthia and Craig Roberts of Glen Aryn Farm. The National Championship Andalusian/Lusitano Best Movement class, with 15 entries, was once again one of the largest classes at

the show. Hielo MOR, handled by John Rock for owner Lisa McDowell, took home the Champion title, while Mary Anne and Derrick Peake’s stallion Vino Real WF, handled by Zach Dukes, won Reserve. Deco, owned by Manuela Reynolds Klecz, won top honors in both the in-hand and functionality sections of the National Grand Champion Andalusian/Lusitano Senior Stallion class to take home one of the mostcoveted titles of the show, while Kimberly David led her mare RA Dulcineya to the National Champion Andalusian/Lusitano Mares All Ages, Amateur to Handle title, clinching her earlier crown as both the 2014 and 2015 National Grand Champion Senior Mare with Howard Peet on the line. The ever-popular Working Equitation division, with 12 entries this year, was one of the most hotly-contested sections of the show. After the three phases had been run, the Level 1 Working Equitation class had a threeway tie for Champion, which had to be broken

based on the Overall Impression marks from the Ease of Handling phase. Talk about a close finish! We really enjoyed seeing so many new faces competing in working equitation at this year’s show and look forward to continuing to watch this division grow. Those who enjoy the classic tradition of driving horses were not disappointed. Jennifer Coyle Johnson and Cheryl Painter drove Cheryl’s Half-Andalusian gelding Abacus Xanthus in a lovely four-wheeled carriage during the competition, and showed off their agility with the marathon cart in the exciting Cones Driving class on Saturday evening. Howard Peet brought three driving horses, and he and amateur drivers Janita Smith and Jennifer Stewart graced the ring in a variety of Carriage Pleasure Working, Country Pleasure Driving, Pleasure Driving, and Show Pleasure
Driving classes. He and Goliat Jim, a 3-yearold pure Spanish stallion joined in the fun of the Cones class, with their fancy two-wheeled carriage, complete with tux. The versatility of the breed was highlighted by entries such as CDC Luna and Lucero G. CDC Luna took home National and Reserve National Champion titles with junior rider Katie Berger in Working Equitation, Hunt Seat and Country English Pleasure; Howard Peet in Country Pleasure Driving Open and Junior Horse; Janita Smith in Country Pleasure Driving Amateur; and Erica Peet in the Spanish/ Portuguese Mares Halter class. This young mare’s versatility helped Katie secure the High Point Youth title as well. Lucero G, ridden by Samantha Brok, competed in Hunter Hack, Fantasy Costume, Dressage Hack, English Show Hack, Hunt Seat, and

Spanish Stallions, taking home numerous Top Five finishes as well as two Reserve Champion trophies. Lucero’s owner, Becky Brok, was selected for the Premier Equestrian Sportsmanship Award, a special award given for the first time at the 2015 National Show to recognize a competitor who displayed incredible sportsmanship throughout the week. One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity to visit with breed enthusiasts from across the country. The eastern location brought a large number of first-time Nationals competitors from as far south as Florida and as far west as Oregon! A solid number of participants represented IALHA Region 6 and 7 well, and the event also welcomed a variety of horses and riders from the central part of the United States. This year’s National Show was dedicated to Francine Dismukes, a longtime IALHA member who is loved by many. The outpouring of admiration for this venerable horsewoman continues to underscore the influence she has had, not only on our breed, but on hundreds of people all around the world. Although Francine did not bring any horses to show at this year’s event, she helped out in a variety of ways: assisting Malen Dell with

“The quality of the competitors was amazing. It was definitely the most competitive event that I’ve ever been to, and people really seemed to be having fun and were helping each other out.” – Karin Hansen the trophy table, designing the cones driving course, fielding questions from spectators and competitors alike, and helping make sure that things ran smoothly.

Members of the Eastern Regional Andalusian Horse Club (ERAHC) are to be commended for their hard work both leading up to and during the show. A number of ERAHC members volunteered throughout the week. Special thanks go to Linda Denniston, for her work in support of the dressage show and recruiting volunteers to fill many positions; to Jeanne Bond, for her work as stable manager, scribe during working equitation and many other tasks she willingly took on; to Julie Keany, who did a superb job lining up a wonderful variety of quality acts for the Saturday evening exhibition; to Maria Blackstone, who stepped up and made sure that the Friday Night Barn Party tradition continued; and to Doug Ramsay, for heading up the successful silent auction. There are so many people to thank that we are sure to have forgotten some. Please know that your contributions were appreciated and helped make the show a real success. In the meantime, the IALHA is already busy planning its 2016 National Championship Show, which will be held at the Salt Lake County Horse Park in South Jordan, Utah, just south of Salt Lake City, Sept. 14-18, 2016. Whether you own an Andalusian, Lusitano or a Half-Andalusian or just love the breed and want the chance to see the finest in competition, please mark your calendars now and plan to attend. w AM

Show Results The IALHA would like to thank Rob Hess Photography for providing the Champion photos of as many classes as they could. We tried to include as many horses’ photos as possible, but some divisions’ photos were not available at press time, or the layout of the shots wouldn’t fit in the space available. We encourage you to visit http://robhessphotos.com to see firsthand all the beautiful photos taken at the show. Rob is still accepting orders; place yours today and memorialize your horse’s achievements for all time!

Spain, anyone? By Barbara Clark, The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse
Late in 2014, board members from the IALHA and The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse (FPSH) met to discuss ways the two organizations might work more closely together for the benefit of our members and the good of the horses we all love. Throughout the year, we have written articles for each other’s magazines and collaborated on exhibitions and informational booths at events across the United States. One of the most enticing collaborations, however, involves a proposed trip to Spain focused entirely on the history and roots of the Spanish horse, with visits to breeders and historical sites. Read more to find out about this special guided adventure, offered exclusively to members of the IALHA or The FPSH.

Córdoba, where you can visit the Gardens of Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, is also a stop on The FPSH trip.
The history and culture of our breed is a huge part of its charm, and you can only fully appreciate where our breed came from if you have visited Spain or Portugal. Our countries are connected by a rich history that helps cement the attraction we have for our horses. The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse (FPSH) has always worked to educate about the horse, and we have developed an exciting dream experience that is only available to members of either The Foundation or the IALHA. Our trip, called The History and Roots of the P.R.E. Horse, a visit to Spain with The FPSH is specifically designed for you. Why not spend your vacation in Spain and learn more about our breed during 14 exciting days? Don’t speak Spanish? Don’t worry! This adventure will be hosted by a bilingual guide who will make sure that you do not miss a thing, and will help you understand all that is happening. The trip will begin on April 26, 2016, with everyone meeting in Madrid at the Atocha Railway Station at noon. After introductions, the group will board a bus, and the fun will begin! The group adventure will end in Jerez or Sevilla on May 9. This is an ideal tour with just enough free time to enjoy some personal exploration and just enough group travel to maximize the ex50 |

This trip is limited to only 18 to 20 people to ensure that it is an incomparable personal experience of a lifetime. If you are not a member of either The FPSH or the IALHA and would like to go on this amazing trip, you must join one or the other. To join the IALHA, visit the website at ialha.org and click on the button for membership or call (205) 995-8900. To join The FPSH, visit www.prehorse. org, and click on the button to the left of the homepage or call (505) 294-0800.
The trip is purposely flexible on both ends so that people can arrive earlier to fulfill their own agenda in central or northern Spain and leave from Jerez or Sevilla by air or take a train back to Madrid. Of course, the most fun would be to stay in southern Spain another week to do more things, for instance you could take riding lessons or visit the wonderful beaches. Because of the strong dollar, it is a perfect time to visit Spain and take advantage of the great rates. At this writing, the euro was 1.1365 instead of 1.35-1.40, which it has been for several years. The cost of the trip will vary, depending upon your situation. Transportation to and from Madrid is not included. The charge for all the transportation from Atocha throughout Spain and the tickets to enter all the historical places and the Royal School Performance are only 800 euros. Hotel reservations will be made according to occupancy, and everyone will pay for their own rooms at the hotels. Rates will vary, but hotels will usually cost around 120130 euros for double occupancy. Hotels will provide most breakfasts, and dinners will be paid by individuals. As you can tell from the itinerary, you can look forward to several wonderful receptions at the homes of breeders which we will visit along the way. Please reserve your place for this Spanish adventure as soon as possible because space is limited. To make a reservation, simply contact The Foundation at (505) 294-0800 or email info@prehorse.org. Don’t forget to check the date on your passport and renew it if it is within six months of expiring. See you in Spain! w AM Issue 3 | 2015

Portugal— The Land of the Lusitano By Misti Seppi

Sunny Portugal: the land of record-breaking surf, Fado, Port wine, cork trees, fighting bulls and, of course, the magnificent Lusitano horse. 52 |

Those who love beauty, grace, elegance, strength and intelligence are drawn to the Lusitano. What better way to understand this incredible horse than to travel to his homeland and to immerse yourself in the Portuguese horse culture? Lisbon is one of Europe’s most beautiful cities and easily accessible from the U.S. with daily flights to Lisbon/Portela. You can arrive in Portugal in the morning, take a quick shower, have lunch and be riding that afternoon. If accompanied by non-riding companions, there is plenty for them to explore, see and do as well. The Portuguese are proud of their horses and teach using their best horses. The top riding centers use schoolmaster horses that have complete education, plenty of energy, and are easily handled and ridden. The instructors have an uncanny talent for matching horse to rider and providing the perfect horse for each rider. Riders are encouraged as they are coached (in excellent English)
through the movements they may have only ever dreamed of doing. Beginning riders are soon doing shoulder in, leg yields and flying changes while advanced riders are working on piaffe, passage, pirouettes and tempi changes. The more ambitious students have the opportunity to learn side-saddle, work in-hand, long lines, work in pillars and even some airs above ground! All of this on gentlemen Lusitanos, many of whom are stallions. Prepare to fall in love with “your” horse and in love with riding all over again! There are several riding schools near the Lisbon area which offer fantastic programs at a good price. Here are two that teach classical principles, practice equestrian art and achieve great success in dressage competition. Issue 3 | 2015

The beautiful riding arena at Quinta da Fonte Santa
“The instructors have an uncanny talent for matching horse to rider and providing the perfect horse for each rider. Riders are encouraged as they are coached through the movements they may have only ever dreamed of doing.” Photo courtesy of Lusitanos d’Atela
Quinta da Fonte Santa/Lusitanos d’Atela http://lusitanosdatela.com/index.php?lang=en Francisco Bessa Carvalho is one of the head riders at the Portuguese School of Equestrian Arte. He is also the owner of the world’s No. 1 Lusitano in dressage, Soberano. Sr. Carvalho is an international clinician and breeder of top quality Lusitanos. The school horses at Quinta da Fonte Santa are from his stud farm, Lusitanos d’Atela. Each horse is more beautiful and talented than the previous, making it impossible to choose a favorite. The riding center is gorgeous, in the traditional Portuguese style with life-size “azulejos” (painted ceramic tiles) in the riding hall. Sr. Cavalho himself is a generous, supportive and effective teacher who brings out the best in both rider and horse. He 54 |

is always respectful and courteous while insisting on precision and always(!!!) rider position. He encourages riders to their limit, but never over the limit, followed by praise for the rider and a pat for the horse. A week with Sr. Carvalho will improve your riding forever. Quinta da Fonte Santa offers single “one-off” lessons or a week-long, self-catered (with lunch at the center), riding experience. This is the perfect program for the serious rider who also wants time to explore Lisbon and the surrounding area. Mrs. Carvalho is very helpful in making arrangements for hotel or bed and breakfast, trips to the Portuguese School and purchases of equestrian items such as tack and clothing. www.ialha.org
Inez Valenca Canio, the Valenca’s granddaughter with one of their highlytrained Lusitanos Valenca Equestrian Tours
Valenca Equestrian Tours/Centro Equestre da Lezirias Grande (CELG) www.valencaequestriantours.com
Master Luis Valenca and his daughters (Sofia, Luisa and Filipa) will welcome you for an all-inclusive riding experience. Once you land at Lisbon airport, everything else is taken care of. You can relax, enjoy and learn. There are approximately 65 Lusitanos at CELG, from a variety of breeders. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the different types of Lusitanos all in one place. The Valenca Method develops horses and riders in a progressive, systematic way: from the first lessons through FEI competition and the airs above ground. It does not matter if you have only ridden a few times or if you are a top rider, you will be encouraged and challenged. The program is designed and supported to take home and continue learning with distance coaching. Master Valenca is a living treasure: He is the link, protégé, friend and cousin to the great Master Nuno Oliveira. The Valenca family continues the Oliveira legacy by training horses and riders to the highest levels for pleasure, exhibition and competition. They train horses and riders for Appassionata (the most popular horse exhibition in Europe), and granddaughter Inez Valenca Canio is Portugal’s 2015 Champion Young Rider (for the second
year in a row). Sofia, Luisa and Filipa Valenca are all acclaimed international clinicians, each with their own unique gifts. Sofia recently launched a joint project with the Horse Boy Foundation using classically trained horses in therapy with people who have autism. Filipa is an amazing choreographer, and Luisa is a gifted trainer/ rider. After a week at CELG, you will be riding movements you never thought possible, and your knowledge of horses and dressage will be vastly increased. Come and fall in love with Portugal, ride amazing horses, eat delicious Portuguese foods, sip incredible Portuguese wines, enjoy the sights and sounds of Lisbon, make new friends, and return home renewed, refreshed, encouraged and empowered to achieve all your riding goals. Misti Seppi, who is located in Utah, enjoys helping others learn about classical riding traditions, the Lusitano, and the history and culture of Portugal.
