Paintlines Jenny Smith’s work invites us to question our definition of drawing, re-visiting modernist concepts from a contemporary perspective. Paul Klee described drawing as taking a line for a walk. This work explores taking a line of paint for a walk. For Jenny, this is a meditative, repetitive hand rendered process, which is then developed into limited edition prints, by blind embossing or laser cutting. All of the work in this exhibition has a Japanese influence. The embossed imprints were inspired by Jenny’s experience of watching monks rake gravel in Zen Garden’s on a research visit to Japan. The Circle Series were inspired by the Zen concept of the interconnectedness of all things. Here we discover the hand painted (or drawn) line is something perpetually revealing its subtlety and variation, via repetition. Jenny is interested in paper as a medium that can be worked into, not just onto. The embossed prints investigate the simplicity of the impression a deeply bitten etching plate can have when bought into direct contact with paper under the pressure of a printing press. This evokes a metaphor for memory and the imprints that experiences can have on our lives. In the Circle series the new technology of laser cutting and engraving is explored, enabling the freedom of each splash of paint to be accurately cut out. Laser engraving allows layers of screen print to be excavated, subtly revealing that which is hidden beneath. Living and working in Edinburgh, Jenny exhibits nationally and internationally, and has won numerous Awards. She has work held in public and private collections, including acquisitions of her artist books by The Tate and National Galleries of Scotland. She was a recipient of a Scottish Arts Council Creative Research and Development Award and has been shortlisted for the Jerwood Drawing Prize. Jenny is listed in the 34th edition of Who’s Who in Art.
