JFK TURNER J.F.K. Turner’s work is concerned with the unnoticed ephemeral elements of everyday life; found objects, marks, stains and the natural effect of time. For over 20 years Turner has collected objects that people have discarded from the street - for example a rubber band, a screwed-up piece of paper, or a flap on a cardboard box. These are non-objects, just the remnants of life. The structures in the paintings are based on these found objects. These objects offer a whole vocabulary of shapes and forms becoming a semiotic language in themselves. These are not abstract paintings but images based on something from the real world. The work is constructed under self-imposed limitations. Turner is interested in looking at humble everyday things and, therefore, limits himself to humble and everyday materials. Turner represents these objects as images using only non-artistic materials including varnish, wax, fragments of material, cardboard boxes, nails and junk mail. If paint is used it is household paint that is poured, smeared and allowed to congeal and crack – like spilt paint on a pavement. Working on wood allows the surface to be attacked by scratching, sanding and stabbing. The resulting paintings are physical; both in the process of their construction and in the final object. The paintings reveal how they were constructed - nails are visible and glue can be seen oozing from underneath certain sections. The final object is not only an image - it is a physical thing. The work could be seen as collage but Turner describes them as paintings seen within the tradition of painting. The process comes from questioning ‘What is a painting’, and maybe more importantly ‘What is an image’. Whether a picture is built up of pixels, oil paint, Byzantine mosaics or chalk scraped across a wall it is constructed from something. It manages to be two things - the matter it is made from and a signal that points to something else. It is a dialogue between a three-dimensional form and an image that relates to the original object – a new version of itself. Imposing limitations leads to opportunities and constraint allows the work to progress. Simply - these are images of things made from things and the final result is a new thing. The ordinary becomes unusual and other.
