Liz Douglas’ practice involves researching material from the landscape at both macro and micro level in order to make paintings, drawings and prints. Contemporary practices in both drawing and painting, in relation to traditional methods, are a constant challenge in order to find innovative ways of making work that challenges her perception of landscape. She paints often on a large scale, layering paint to create surface texture, colour and structure. She is particularly interested in the relationship between the natural world and the human world and the importance of the wild natural spaces that exist in Scotland and her need to connect to these through walking the landscape and finding a way of making work that resonates. The writer Nan Shepherd, and “The Living Landscape” has been an important influence. Her work has focussed on specific sites in the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway which are of geological interest, sites of regeneration (ongoing) – habitats that existed 6,000 years ago. She has collaborated with agencies, in particular Scottish Natural Heritage and The Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, The Borders Forest Trust, The Carrifran Wildwood Project, in order to develop her understanding of the quiet habitats that exist in Scotland and the astonishing work that is being done . Liz Douglas is a Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists, and graduate of Edinburgh College of Art.
