June 2019

Blast Off with Summer Reading Summer is almost here and that means just one thing – Summer Reading is back at your local library! Starting now, children, teens, and adults can register online; then, between June 1 and July 31, read 10 books or for 10 hours to earn prizes and an entry into a grand prize drawing. Participation is free and easy – just visit andersonlibsc.readsquared.com or visit any Anderson County Library location to get started. Additionally, children and families can explore a universe of stories with fun and educational performances and activities each week. Musician Aspen Black will take children on a musical journey through America’s new frontiers the week of June 10. Other weekly programs include Wildlife Geek Chuck Alberding, the Science Tellers, and NASA Ambassador Ekaterina Michonova. Each program is free and there’s no registration, but due to limited space, tickets for each program will be handed out 30 minutes prior to start time. Teens and adults also have events throughout the summer including crafts and a movie series. Take a peek inside to see what’s in store for this month. Reading even 20 minutes a day is an important part of keeping students’ literacy skills sharp in between the school years and staving off the so-called “summer slide.” The Library’s free Summer Reading program provides a reading goal as well as prize incentives to promote reading and literacy. The reading goal for Listeners (ages birth to 5) is 10 books, while Readers (ages 6-12), Teens (ages 12-18), and

Adults (ages 18+) have a goal of 10 books or 10 hours of reading. Listeners and Readers who complete the program will receive a Summer Reading medal and certificate and an entry into a Grand Prize drawing for a Leapfrog LeapPad Pro or Kindle Fire. Children and teens who complete the program will receive a ticket voucher to the Greenville Drive Reader All-Star game. Vouchers must be redeemed for an actual game -day ticket. Teens and Adults will also be entered into a grand prize drawing for gift cards and other giveaways. Finally, if 10 books or 10 hours of reading seems too easy, ask about the extra reading challenges the Library has for children. If you don’t know what you want to read, ask at the Library! We have reading lists for a variety of genres as well as Summer Reading-themed lists. So keep busy this summer with free, fun activities at your local library and the Summer Reading challenge!
